Eurasian beavers Castor fiber were once native to Dorset and are known as nature’s ecosystem engineers due to their activities, such as dam building to create deep water in which they feel safe, having such a positive impact on the local environment. Beavers even have the potential to reduce flooding by slowing the rate of water during extreme rainfall events. Once common in the UK, the 16th century saw Eurasian beavers hunted to extinction for their meat, fur, and castoreum, a secretion from their castor glands.
Seeing the first kit is an incredibly exciting moment for the project and breeding is a clear indication of normal behaviour and that the adult pair are healthy and happily settled in their Dorset surroundings. This local project is an enormous step forward on the journey to restore beavers to Dorset, helping us to raise awareness and understanding of what it means to have these influential mammals back in our county. Beavers have the potential to make a huge difference to our natural environment and can assist nature’s recovery as well as providing other benefits for humans.”
First Beaver Kit born in Dorset for over 400 years Beavers have bred in Dorset for the first time in over 400 years at Dorset Wildlife Trust’s enclosed beaver site in West Dorset. Trail cameras inside the enclosure have captured images of a young beaver, known as a kit, and its mother, exploring the watery woodland created by its parents since they were released in February 2021. This landmark project for Dorset is hosted by Dorset Wildlife Trust working alongside lead partners, University of Exeter and Wessex Water to undertake a scientific study to assess all the impacts that beavers make on the natural environment including river flow, water quality and biodiversity. Since the beavers were introduced to site, they have built dams, creating a wetland to suit their needs but which also provides habitat for many other species, such as frogs and newts which depend on water. Rivers Conservation Officer, Steve Oliver said, “We have been closely monitoring the pair since their release and it has been clear that they have formed a strong bond in the time they have been on site, and this latest discovery is further evidence of this, alongside their industrious dam building activity. The trail cams have only identified one kit so far, but beavers can typically have one to four kits in a litter, and we are discreetly observing their activity to see if any others have been born.

Yet, by extension, when our appliances require more energy, over a longer period, to perform the same function, both we and the environment are paying for the privilege.

1. Plastic is not fantastic We all know the issue with single-use plastics, and the damage they do to the environment. The prevalence of refillable and reusable body products – soaps, gels, moisturisers etc. – and the number of retailers wising up to this trend, has kicked off a cultural shift that is rapidly gathering pace. Not only is this tendency for refillable products a trendy revolution, even if it is akin to wartime replenishment of products, but typically those products on offer have been developed with sensitive skin or vegan elements in mind, meaning they are better not just for the environment, but ourselves too.

Also ensure leaky taps are fixed and are certainly not left running for any amount of time unnecessarily – a tap left on can let through six litres of water in under a minute. That means small things such as turning the tap off when brushing your teeth or washing your face can offer a huge benefit in terms of saving water. And of course, whilst helping the environment you’re also reducing your water bill.

Airship Orchestra Comes to Bournemouth for European Premiere
As part of GIANT OFFSITE, a series of outdoor installations, Airship Orchestra, supported by BCP Council and Bournemouth Town Centre BID, will be running for four weeks and finishes with the Bournemouth Arts By the Sea Festival. Marking its European premiere, Airship Orchestra will be the colossal centrepiece for art month and will be in situ 8 September – 9 October 2022.

The month of art culminates with Arts by the Sea, BCP Council’s flagship free cultural festival, an exhilarating mix of theatre, dance, music, large-scale spectaculars and light & sound installations from 30 September – 2 October. Arts by the Sea’s twelfth year explores the theme of PLAY as festival goers shake off the seriousness of what has been and rediscover time and space to have fun. Each year Arts by the Sea packs Bournemouth’s public spaces with intriguing performances and installations from some of the best creative companies and this year will be no different. Visit www.giant.space for more details
Created by ENESS, a multi award-winning art and technology studio led by Nimrod Weis, the custom light installation comprises 16 inflatables – some up to six metres – extending over a 500 square metre area. It is manifest as a mystical tribe of otherworldly characters beamed from the night stars, with glowing skin and voices like stardust. Visitors are beckoned inside the formation to bathe in volumetric sound and rhythmic light pulsation. The installation of this world class artwork in Bournemouth is yet another confirmation of the town’s burgeoning status as an international hub for culture. In the summer of 2021, British artist Stuart Semple and his studio team transformed one floor of a former Debenhams department store – now Bobby’s Bournemouth – on the high street into GIANT, the largest art centre of its kind outside London Cllr Beverley Dunlop, Portfolio Holder for Tourism, Culture and Vibrant Places at BCP Council “Giantsaid, Gallery has put contemporary art right on our doorstep, showing international art works that most of us would never have the opportunity to see. September is shaping up to be art month across Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole with the arrival of Airship Orchestra, an ambitious custom light and sound installation, taking place in The Triangle.

It’s tasty, has been around for centuries and is a key ingredient in Britain’s favourite dish – chicken tikka masala –but it’s only recently that the full benefits of turmeric have come to the fore. This gorgeously golden spice gives curry its orange tinge and has long been used in India as a medicinal herb. This is all down to compounds found within the spice, the most important of which is curcumin, which has powerful antiinflammatory effects and is a very strong antioxidant. It can also be used as a lively, peppery essence in things like juices, foods and stocks. Dried turmeric, meanwhile, which is much less potent, adds colour and enhanced earthiness to preparations such as roasts, rice and scrambled eggs. Supplement that! Of course, turmeric doesn’t have to be used in its raw form of food preparation; it can also be taken as a supplement. Terminology Turmeric is a plant and it’s the roots of the plant that are used to make the spice that is used in cooking and herbal drinks. Curcumin is the naturally occurring compound within the plant’s roots that give it it’s bright yellow colour and is known as a carotenoid

While studies in humans are still in very early stages, lab and animal studies have shown promising effects of curcumin in the fight against cancer, by interfering with several important molecular pathways involved in cancer development, growth and spread. In this month’s column, Martin Lewis looks at how, in a time of rising costs, we can make savings in other places.
There’s so much attention at the moment on the cost of petrol, the cost of our utilities, the rise in inflation, and it all seems like bad news. Yet sometimes we are all guilty of obsessing over the negative elements whilst failing to recognise good opportunities elsewhere; and if you’re looking for one sector where costs, pretty much consistently over time, have always decreased, then reach into your pocket and take out your trusty mobile phone. Telecommunications, broadband and connected industries continue to slash prices in what is a consumerled price war, and the simple truth is many of us are still paying too much for our mobile

Money on my mind...the Martin Lewis column phone contracts. So if you’re coughing more than about a tenner a month for your mobile phone contract – and by that I mean calls, texts and data, not the device itself –you’re probably in line to save some money. It all comes down to looking for the best-priced SIM for your needs, because once you find the right deal, it’s really very easy nowadays to grab your PAC code and switch networks. Now usually when I suggest switching to a different mobile provider, people come back with concern over signal strength for, say, Lebara Mobile or PlusNet or whoever it is offering the best deal on data. The reality though is that the communications network is run by four companies and four companies only – O2, EE, Vodafone and Three. Every other provider is piggybacking off their signal, so, in effect, it’s the same signal. So by selecting one of the smaller companies all you’re doing is going with a virtual network, and everything else should remain the same. Obviously check before you sign up to see if 5G or tethering conditions are available, but beyond those things it’s the same line. It’s strange that mobile phones are such an integral part of our lives, yet many of us take for granted the competitiveness of the industry and don’t realise where we can be making savings.Inanera of prices rising inexplicably across the board in other elements of our life, the time is now to start working the equation back in our favour, so have a look at your bill, survey the competition and start the conversation! Jupiter & Saturn
Both gas giants are visible from 9pm in our south-eastern skies as the Sun sets, with dazzling Jupiter lower to the east (left) of less-bright Saturn. An almost-full moon appears between them on the 9th. Moon September’s full moon occurs on the 10th. It is close to Saturn on the 8th, Jupiter on the 10th, and Mars on the 16th.

International Space Station
Mercury The innermost planet cannot be seen this month. Venus Venus is visible just before sunrise in the east, but is lost in the Sun’s glare towards the end of the month. It will reappear in our evening skies in December. Mars Mars can be seen late in the evening, rising around 10pm. It is currently located in the constellation of Taurus the Bull, and is close to the Hyades and Pleiades star clusters (see figure).
The ISS can be spotted early in the morning until the 11th; it then moves to our evening skies from the 15th until month end. To establish exact timings please refer to www.heavens-above.com or a similar webpage for up-to-date information, remembering to set the location to your observing area.
Events
The Autumn Equinox on 23rd September marks when daylight hours equal the number of night-time hours, wherever you are on Earth. The term equinox originates from the Latin meaning ‘equal night’. The Autumn equinox marks the point at which nights start to become longer than days.
Welcome to the September Stargazing Page. Highlights this month include the return of the gas giants to our evening skies, and a rare opportunity to see the planet Uranus disappear briefly behind the Moon.
Did you know...? A very rare event occurs in the UK for the first time since 1953 this month, when the Moon moves in front of (occults) the planet Uranus. Although not a naked-eye planet, Uranus can easily be spotted in binoculars, and you can use these to watch as it disappears behind the lit side of the Moon on the 14th around 10.15pm depending on your location. It will then reappear out from behind the dark limb of the Moon around an hour or so later. If the evening is cloudy then there is a second chance to see the same thing happen on the 5th December late in the afternoon! 11.30pm from the 20th SeptemberNE E Capella Pleiades star AldebaranredclusterHyadesclusterstarandgiantMars Occultation of Uranus by the Moon: September 14th ~10.15pm - 11.30pm Please mention Modern Magazines when contacting advertisers29

Designer, writer and television presenter, Kevin McCloud leapt into our consciousness with his vastly successful Grand Designs show on Channel 4. This month, the a able architectural business owner talks sustainability.about Sustainability in design is obviously a hot topic, yet it comes from a place where the reality is the housing stock in this country is actually pretty poorly constructed, and when that happens it means we are immediately on the backfoot as far as sustainability and carbon footprint goes. This comes about because of that classic play-o between the environment and the wallet – they have never been good bedfellows and never will be, so we kind of get what we expect out of the Whatequation.that means is that while our homes are typically not as sustainable or environmentally friendly as they might be, we compensate for that fact by trying to wrestle back a bit of positive contribution through our own daily lifestyle habits.
In simple terms, that means all of us can turn the thermostat down, or look towards secondary glazing windows, or put more insulation in the attic. All of us can recycle more, can waste less, can grow our own vegetables, walk more, invest in electric technology, or simply just explore the idea of sharing more with our neighbours. All of these things reduce collective carbon and environmental footprint, but most also share the idea of community and a common goal, and I think that’s just as Ofimportant.course,
next generation of homebuilders, and in that I’m talking about things like high-performing concretes, and cements that have a lot of recycled material in them… like blast furnace slag and pulverised fly ash. It’s also about building with recycled stone and locally sourced wood materials, and investing in craftsmanship rather than mass-market ways of producing what we need.
When we source materials this way, we tend to value the relationship we have with them that bit more, so we are e ectively redrawing the circle in a way that ensures we invest more in what we

Put the floured chicken pieces into the hot olive oil, skin side down, and fry without moving the pieces until goldenbrown underneath. This should take around 8-10 minutes. Next, turn the chicken and fry until browned on the other side. Now finely chop the shallot and add to the frying pan, placing the shallot under the chicken so that the shallot cooks.
Next, add the chicken stock pot and the tomato juice (with gravy browning if using). Shake the pan to gently work it in and turn the chicken pieces until fully coated in the liquid. Bring slowly to the boil to allow the chicken stock pot to dissolve, then add the tarragon and simmer for 5 minutes.

He’s a brilliant presenter, accomplished gardener, talented novelist and allround horticultural inspiration. This month, Alan Titchmarsh discusses putting early preparations in place for the cold season. So then, winter is coming! Okay, so it’s a way off yet, but getting our plans together early for what we want to see in our gardens in winter, is actually a really good idea, even if the whole discussion feels a little, well, ‘out of season’, you might Thesay! notion of the winter vegetable is one we all stand by – rough, rustic, wholesome and happy, they are the meal mainstays of a season in which we want to be inside, wrapped up warm, with the products of our labour in front of us. Think about kale, brussels sprouts, parsnips, and who can resist the Jerusalem artichoke? These are all easy to get into the group, simple to maintain, and will flourish as the year goes on, ready for picking just when the temperatures begin to drop sharply in November. You

In this case, definitely consider spinach, typically planted at the start of autumn, and carrots too. We associate carrots with sugary, summer flavours, but planted in November and with a bit of protection, the Adelaide carrot flourishes across the colder months for an earlyspring treat. Onions have an incredibly long growing season too and require slightly longer in the ground, so planting now will mean they won’t be ready until next Allsummer.ofthis proves that while many of us believe the end of the summer will gradually see our gardens lose their colourful, bountiful appeal, there is still plenty of work to do, and plenty of our outside spaces still to be enjoyed.

Howard Goodship
As a business owner (self-employed or limited company) you have a greater degree of flexibility over how you are remunerated but also greater responsibilities for your staff, customers and the future success of the business. What can often be missed is the responsibility to focus on your own retirement planning.
The big picture: The first stage is to quantify what level of income you will need in retirement, and what other capital events you need to account for during your retirement (eg dream holidays, house renovations, financial support for children for house deposits & weddings etc). Once established, it’s possible to work backwards and identify how much you need to have saved to meet your retirement aspirations. We utilize market-leading cash-flow software to quantify this, taking into account inflation assumptions and projected investment returns. It’s possible to model different scenarios; for example we can run one scenario to include a business sale, and another to assume the business continues under management to continue to generate revenue for the owner.
1. Tax Efficient: Pension contributions are treated as a business expense so save corporation tax for limited companies. They are a very effective way to draw excess profits from the business without the need to pay corporation tax on those profits or income tax/dividend tax if drawn personally. The self-employed qualify for taxrelief so in effect pay no tax on contributions. There are annual allowances of £40,000 to consider but it’s possible to go back up to 3 years if full contributions haven’t been made and use “carry-forward” to make higher contributions in the current tax year.
Business Owner’s Retirement Planning
The role of pensions: Whilst we would all hope that the business thrives and provides the capital needed to retire, sadly this isn’t always the case. Like all things in life, it’s sensible to diversify your options and saving into a pension can be a very effective way to provide further flexible capital for retirement with many advantages.
2. Secure: toprotectedschemesPensionarevarying degrees, with some insured schemes offering 100% protection in the event of provider default. In addition, money held in a pension is secure and separate from your business. In the event of the failure of your business, pension savings are secure.
4. Inheritance Tax exempt: Under current legislation, pension savings are not included in the value of your estate for IHT purposes. The pension fund can also be passed down to nominated beneficiaries on death in a tax efficient manner (tax-free pre age 75 and taxable at the nominated beneficiaries own income tax rate post age 75). To summarise, with sensible planning it’s possible to pay less tax and keep more of your hard earned money to fund your financial future. Hopefully this means you may either retire sooner, or enjoy an improved lifestyle during retirement. If you’d like to learn more or discuss your personal situation, we would be delighted to meet for a free, no obligation initial chat.

This is great for the consumer but sadly many existing pension schemes still charge the same as they always did. STARs is the charity’s support and advice service for siblings of children with special education needs. It’s a 12-week programme for children aged eight to 16, meeting on Thursday evenings between 4.30pm and The6.30pm.charity aims to reduce pressure the siblings are under by providing an environment where they can access support and advice, but also take part in fun activities, make friends, and be themselves. Clare Rochford, manager of STARs, commented: “It’s tough being an SEN sibling, as well as the usual challenges of growing up, they also often receive less attention from parents and have more worries and responsibilities than their peers. “It’s important to provide an opportunity that enables young people to realise they are not alone, hopefully giving them a support network which will last far longer than the time they attend our sessions, as being a sibling never ends.”
Co-op members raise £1,200 for the siblings!

The Adventures of Daichi The Modern Magazines Camper Van Daichi loves the sea. That is why we all moved to Weymouth at the end of last year, to be as close to the beach as possible. And what a summer it has been. Glorious sunshine, glistening blue, turquoise waters, golden sand and lots of happy faces. Of course, boat trips are a must and with plenty of choice, Weymouth harbour is a delight to sail from. I may have mentioned that my Mum has dementia. It is a horrible disease that is for sure. Never predictable and always a challenge. My Dad, at age 87 still drives all the way from Hull to visit us and I absolutely take my hat off to him for persisting through the same questions on and on as he cruises down the motorway. Music works well and the sixties songs with The Supremes, Neil Diamond, Buddy Holly, Dusty Springfield and even the Rolling Stones are a blessing no one would ever realise. Singing to her hearts content, all smiles, the long journey is possible… albeit ear plugs are recommended! Dad, having been a fisherman all his life, loves the water. That is where I get my passion from, I am sure. My sister and I try and give him as much time as possible for his ultimate pleasure, pond fishing for carp, but boat trips to sea are also one of his delights. Hayden, our son of now nearly nineteen, used to go on the Yorkshire Belle with them, in Bridlington, when he visited in the summer some moons ago. So, off to sea we went. We chose a smaller, leisurely boat called Josephine so that Mum would not be alarmed. It was just gorgeous. Bobbing along on the calm waters, literally watching the world go by, looking back at the busy Esplanade with people milling around, fair rides spinning, children playing, I All aboard! Smiles all round... Nothe Fort from the water To advertise in this magazine, call 01202 89439748

have to say I just love it. Passing Nothe Fort, on the right, our coastal defence which was built between 1860 and 1872 by 26 Company of the Royal Engineers to protect Portland and Weymouth Harbours, makes you feel quite small sat in a tiny blue boat. It was due to this construction that Portland became an important Royal Navy base. The fort is certainly worth a visit but do be ready for the gun shots on each hour or they can be quite a shock! I nearly finished up on the top of Portland (spiritually) when I first heard it! With a prison there, I am not sure that was prosurvival… So, back on the boat, all was well. We continued across the bay towards Portland Harbour. I was amazed at the buildings jutting right out to sea. I believe they were all part of the defence which was put in place. They are pretty derelict now and would need quite some upgrade, but I am sure they would make some very unusual houses. The problem with me is that I am always looking for a project to do… it drives Stephen mad! One day I will retire… but it could be some time. We pootled into Portland Bay where there were huge cargo ships and a naval ship, but then to our utter delight two dolphins jumped out of the water in synchronised dancing. How wonderful! Back and forth they frolicked, entertaining us with lots of ooh, aahs and happy sounds. Family times are all about making memories, and although Mum will not remember, as she was ‘not there’ and will adamantly assert that, we knew she had a good time and loved every minute. So did we. Sailing back, to our astonishment there was a seal bathing on a rock, looking at us in a rather bored way while flapping its tail quietly against the stone. What an incredible day and all here in the UK. I do enjoy a trip abroad, but there are such sights, delights and moments to be enjoyed right here. Dad really wants to go reef fishing. It is on his ‘bucket’ list and with trips available here in Weymouth, I wonder if Daichi can make this go right for us all? I wonder? Let’s see in the next issue of your Local Magazine. Have a great month of September. By Debbie Corney Dolphins in Portland harbour the seal?

Granted charity status in 2020, Grounded Community currently has around 140 volunteers and nine part-time staff members to run foodgrowing workshops, set people up in their homes and train volunteers. In addition, Grounded Community runs a surplus food box scheme to aid lowincome households with supermarket surplus and garden produce. Visit www. groundedcommunity.co.uk to donate or provide a monthly donation support. To apply for funding from the Talbot Village trust, visit www.talbotvillagetrust.org to submit an online application. The Trust meets biannually and is accepting applications for funding from both previous and new applicants in the area before the trustees meet in autumn 2022 and spring 2023.
The educational charity has used the grant to create an Outdoor Kitchen Learning Space at The Secret Garden in the grounds of St Clements Church in Boscombe. The match funded donation was put towards purchasing materials for the timber-framed structure with skylight roof panels, kitchen units, a hob, pizza oven and a barbecue, with the remainder invested in garden maintenance and water irrigation.
Talbot Village Trust helps Grounded Community flourish!
The Outdoor Kitchen Learning Space provides shelter from the rain for the volunteers, local women’s group Safe and Sound and nature play parents, while also giving them a space to make and enjoy refreshments. The students from neighbouring schools will also be making use of the charity’s new educational garden resource.
Michael French, Projects Coordinator at Grounded Community, said: “We are very grateful to the Trust for investing in our community and supporting our work. Grants like the one provided by the Talbot Village Trust enable us to focus on our spaces and make them more user-friendly and accommodating.

1. Put the flour into the bowl of a food processor, add the butter in large pieces and process for a few seconds to the consistency of fine breadcrumbs. Add the sugar and the egg yolk and process until the mixture starts to come together to form a dough. 2. Next, pour in enough water – probably 1 or 2 tbsp – to Method produce a smooth, firm dough. You can also do this by hand, rubbing the butter into the flour with your fingertips, then stirring in the sugar and eggs and a little water and bringing the dough into a ball by hand. 3. Wrap the pastry in kitchen parchment and let it rest in the fridge for 30 minutes. Set the oven at 190°C/gas mark 5. Slice off one-third of the dough and set aside. On a lightly floured board, roll out the larger piece of pastry and use it to line the tart tin. Push Ingredients (serves 4) For the pastry • 250g plain flour 125g butter 100g caster sugar • 2 egg yolks • 1-2 tbsp water 1 egg, beaten for the glaze For the filling 4 tbsp ground almonds 500g orange marmalade You will also need a 20cm tart tin with a removable base. Roll out the reserved pastry into a disc roughly the size of the tart, then cut into 2cm wide strips. Brush lightly with a little beaten egg, then place the strips one at a time on to the surface of the tart in a lattice pattern. 5. Bake for 30 minutes until the pastry is pale biscuit-coloured and the marmalade is bubbling. Let the tart cool before easing from the tin and slicing.
