Dear Ferndown, So the holiday time is upon us. Hayden, our son, has gone to Grandma and Grandad’s for a couple of weeks up North. He could not wait to get in the car! When I called this evening and Grandma asked if he wanted to speak to me, his casual response was “No that’s fine”. I guess he is doing well then! Funny aren’t they. I can’t blame him… boat trips, steam engines, fishing, parks, games and undivided attention. That’s what Grandparents are for hey. We are very lucky. I hope if you are a grandparent that you get to see your grandchildren too. So — despite all the fun of the summer (and I do hope we get some more sunshine) do take a look through The Ferndown & West Parley Directory and get some help in the house, get the car fixed, give the kitchen a facelift, pick up a new hobby, give the kids something to do, get the garden sorted or indeed get lots of things done that you haven’t gotten around to yet. Youth achievement recognised Girls swept the board at this year’s student Rotary Awards at Ferndown Upper School, with Lauren Spencer, Natasha Wakelin, Charlotte Durling and Amy Kirkham being recognised for going that extra yard, for their outstanding achievements over a range of activities both in school and within the wider community. Lauren Spencer and Natasha Wakelin shared the honours for the community service award, giving of their evenings, weekends and holidays to ‘Become a Befriender’ - supporting those less able in doing what any other might do. Amy Kirkham picked up the award for sports, for gymnastics, for obtaining and then using her professional coaching qualification to train youngsters while not only judging but also competing at events, all this while still producing high quality work as part of her A level studies.
Speaking of the awards, the President of Ferndown Rotary Club Antonino Perella said: ‘At a time when youth too often attracts headlines for the wrong reasons, its great to be able to show the flip side. ‘Its also gratifying to know that the four we have recognised today were the best from many in the school that were considered for any one of the awards.’ ‘The four of them a re a c r e d i t t o themselves and to Ferndown Upper School,’ he closed. Ferndown Rotary
Charlotte Durling collected the award for endeavour – turning out work of degree standard while also participating in an array other activities including a Tall Ships voyage and the Duke of Edinburgh Gold award plus contributing to the school jazz band. The winners collected a shield and a cheque for £30.00.

VULCAN EFFECT SPREADS TO A SECOND DISPLAY Avro Vulcan confirmed for second Festival appearance Bournemouth Air Festival organisers have confirmed that the mighty Avro Vulcan will now be able to display twice thanks to the support of S&D Leisure, who are supporting Saturday’s display, and Bournemouth Airport, the appearance supporter for Sunday.
Jon Weaver, Bournemouth Air Festival director says; “What a great addition to an already great flying programme. We’re so pleased to have the Vulcan for a second display, so a big thank you to S&D Leisure and Bournemouth Airport for their generous contribution.”
Stanley Reeves, owner of S&D Leisure said; “We’re proud to support the Vulcan display on Saturday where she’ll be joining the Red Arrows and Tornado Role Demo for what I’m sure will be another great Festival ‘power hour’. It’s certainly going to get loud!”
The Bournemouth Air Festival will be taking place at Bournemouth seafront on August 18th to the 21st and boasts a line up that includes the Red Arrows and The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight.
Sally Windsor from Bournemouth Airport said; “The Vulcan is such a tremendous crowd-puller at every event she displays at, so the opportunity to bring her to Bournemouth was too tempting to pass up.” The imposing bomber is operated by the Vulcan to the Sky Trust, who are delighted at the opportunity to display a second time. CEO of the Trust Dr Robert Pleming said; “We have always said that Bournemouth is a real highlight for us. The flight path along the beach is glorious, the huge crowds very enthusiastic and the reception to the Vulcan is always extremely warm, so we’re very grateful to S&D Leisure for allowing us to extend the Vulcan effect to a second display”.

Lights… Camera… Action! - Take 8 Arts & Entertainment News Plans are advanced to create a giant metal robot sculpture using old car body parts and a selection of electrical components from discarded computers, domestic appliances, television and hi-fi sets. The work will be undertaken during the month of August as an Art4All project by local youngsters from the Riffs Youth Club in Ferndown under professional supervision from art tutor and sculptor, Chris Wood. It’s all part of the Art4All in Ferndown project to engage local youth in community activities and help improve the appearance of the town and make it a better place to live and work. If you are aged 11 or over and would like to come along and learn some basic welding and metalwork skills and help create an awesome piece of public art, then contact the Riffs Youth Club on 01202 874448. The workshop course runs from 10am to 3pm on the 15th to 17th August. Following a donation of hand crafted ceramic tiles from Tiegla Tiles in West Parley, a series of ‘Smilestones’ and have been created and will be installed as Sign posts to mark the route of the new Ferndown Art Trail. 30 items of creative interest along the route, ranging from painted murals depicting traditional local scenes to heraldic banners and wood sculptures. It features a guide to local shopping and eating out plus a range of leisure, sports, arts and entertainment activities in Ferndown and the surrounding area. There are details of a number of local places to visit including museums, attractions and countryside parks as well as local countryside amenity areas such as the Ferndown and Parley Commons, Slop Bog, Harmont Community Wood and the Ford Lane Recreational Ground. There is also a potted history of the town which highlights various aspects of its interesting recent history and origins. It’s w e l l w o r th a quick read! So pick up your free copy of the leaflet from the Ferndown Library, Town Council Offices and other local outlets.

THE ROYAL MARINES ARE BACK IN TOWN The Royal Marines Association Concert Band are performing once again for an afternoon concert at Lighthouse Poole on Sunday 4th September at 3pm in aid of Royal Marines Charities, and the local charity The Friends of Dolphin, a Trust dedicated to giving free boat trips to disabled members of the community. West Moors Artist, Paul Dolman, Paints the Red Arrows for 2011 Bournemouth Air Show Local artist, Paul Dolman, has produced an original oil painting of the Red Arrows, sized at 39” x 20”, which will be professionally framed and signed by the current pilots in the Red Arrows on 5th August. The painting is being raffled for charity during the 2011 annual Bournemouth Air Show. Raffle tickets are on sale at £5 per ticket and are available from now until the 21st August 2011.
