Hello Ferndown and West Parley!

June already… I do hope the warmer weather lasts into July and August. The sunshine seems to make such a lot of difference. We are off to Devon for a few days this week which I am thoroughly looking forward to. Hayden is having swimming lessons and really enjoying it, so the pool will be a winner all round I think. Gives me time to sit and have a coffee at the side!

Boss Returns To Shop Floor For The 30th Anniversary One of the region’s most successful independent retailers is celebrating the 30th anniversary since the first Pampurred Pets pet supply store was opened in Ferndown. In May 1981, Steve and Debbie Fowler served their first customer. Three decades later the £12 million turnover Verwood based company employs over 350 people across 44 stores in southern England and South Wales.

Managing Director Steve, a former supermarket manager, and Finance Director Debbie are to return to the refurbished Ferndown store to serve and celebrate with customers for the first time in 25 years.

“It has been a long time since we have had the chance to work in a store and get the opportunity to meet and thank our customers,” said Steve. “When we started we knew we wanted to create a chain of friendly, p ro f e s s i on a l ly ru n stores. The real growth in the business has been over the last 15 years in which we have opened 30 outlets.”

The couple’s daughters Samantha 24 and Natasha 22

also work for the company. Samantha joined as Assistant Office Manager in 2009 and is now Office Manager. Natasha joined as Finance Manager since 2008.

Steve’s mother Vera joined the celebrations having helped the couple open many of the stores from the start.

“We are fortunate to have a great team of people who have worked hard to ensure that the company can survive and continue to expand in these current difficult trading conditions,” said Steve.

“The introduction of exclusive products, and the continued training of staff who have a genuine interest in the care for a wide range of domestic pets, has generated much loyalty from customers.”

WAGGY TAILS RESCUE, is a registered charity based in Ferndown. They rescue and re-home dogs that have been abandoned, neglected or otherwise in need of a good home.

June Jewel Daisy is a Mastiff cross who is about seven years old. She is a very sweet dog that we rescued from the pound on Christmas Eve. She is full of character and loves to be loved. She has been waiting for the right home since Christmas!

NEW VENUE FOR THE FUN DOG SHOW In the past the annual dog show has been held in Kinson, but due to the closure of the park’s toilets, an alternative venue had to be found. So this year it will be held at the West Parley Memorial Hall and Field, Christchurch Road, West Parley BH22 8SQ. The date will be Saturday June 18th and doors open at 12.30pm but no need to register for classes ahead of time this year. All the usual fun and frolics including a parade of all the re homed dogs of the past (If you have a WT dog, please bring it along) also all the dogs needing homes will be there too. Fabulous food, children’s’ games, super prizes, so what more could you want? Free entry but limited parking so share transport if you can.

Lights… Camera… Action! - Take 6 Arts & Entertainment News Art4All News From the beginning of June there are three new wood carvings in the Ferndown Sculpture Park. Fernie the Bear, Cyril the Squirrel and a hand carved Lover’s Seat.

Welsh wood carving wizard, Chris Wood visited Ferndown again recently and created some fresh new pieces, including an innovative Musical Log Drum to enhance the children’s play area opposite the Ferndown Middle School.

On Saturday 11th June, as part of the Great Poppy Party Weekend in support of the Royal British Legion’s Nationwide 90th Birthday celebrations, Art4All will be launching the new Ferndown Art Trail from the Ford Lane Recreation Ground on Heatherlands Estate. Stop by between 10.00am and 12noon to view the latest Art4All designs and developments and take part in a walk around Ferndown’s Art Trail. Back to the seas of our grandparents’ days Right now, a network of Marine Protected Areas is being developed around our shores, with protection from the most damaging activities such as gravel extraction and scallop dredging. Most types of fishing, commercial and recreational activity will still be allowed, but there will be some new marine reserves, called Reference Areas, which will be protected from ALL damaging activities, giving them a chance to return to the rich seas of our grandparents’ days.

These highly protected Reference Areas, small though they will be, are vital to the success of the network as a whole. They allow wildlife within them to return to a near-natural state, acting as benchmarks for understanding how human activities affect marine life, showing us what a healthy and undamaged sea is like – something we can hardly imagine at the moment. Older Dorset residents remember seeing schools of harbour porpoise from Dorset’s cliffs and catching large angel shark and common skate, both of which are now critically endangered.

We hope that by s et t i n g a s id e s om e areas of the sea purely for wildlife we will see a return to the marine environment our greatgrandparents enjoyed.

If we are to halt the centuries-long decline in our seas we need to establish Reference

Areas that are purely for the recovery of wildlife. They will undoubtedly affect some people who use the sea for their living or recreation and tough decisions will be needed. But if we do nothing, noone will benefit, least of all our local Dorset fishing communities. If we don’t act now there will be very little for our grand-children to enjoy.

Blind Club Celebrates Anniversary The local club for the Blind and Partially Sighted recently celebrated its 26th anniversary when 40 members enjoyed party games and a celebration tea at the Girl Guide hall in Ferndown.

Blind and Partially Sighted persons from the surrounding areas regularly meet for a social afternoon on alternate Tuesdays. The meetings are organised by volunteers, supported crucially by volunteer drivers without whom our Members would not be able to travel.

We are in need of some additional drivers in the Ferndown, Wimborne, West Moors, Verwood, and Ashley Heath areas who could give a couple of hours each fortnight, or just occasionally to help us out as a relief driver.

Get fit while the kids have fun From 4th June you can get fit while the kids have fun at Moors Valley Country Park and Forest near Ringwood.

That’s when the Park’s new Saturday morning Green Active Club is opening for families, offering a fantastic selection of fun activities that everyone can enjoy in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.

Adult activities include Nordic Walking, BikeFit and Tai Chi, whilst children can go adventure cycling, play golf or take part in a great ‘Get Active Outdoors’ programme.

Alternatively, families can get fit together with pitch and putt, fishing or on a family bike ride.

“It can be hard to find time to keep fit and healthy when you are raising a family,” said Healthy Lifestyle Ranger, Karl Prince.

“Our new Green Active Club has been designed to help solve the problem. We have organised a full programme of events so that the kids can have fun while mum and dad get some personal time and benefit from the expertise of our qualified instructors. Better still, we are keeping the costs right down, with Ranger-led children’s activities costing just £2.50 when parents are participating in the programme”.

Adult and family activities start at 10am, but the children’s sessions start five minutes earlier to ensure everyone can enjoy a full hour of active fun. All adult sessions cost £4, children’s activities with participating adults cost £2.50 (£6 if parent is not on an activity) and child places on family activities cost just £2.

Parking at the Moors Valley is free for the first three sessions.

On a Sunday afternoon once a month. A downstairs cloakroom is a must.

We only ask our volunteer host and hostesses to entertain small groups of elderly people plus two car drivers just once a year to afternoon tea.

Don’t be put off if you have children or animals as it can be stimulating for the elderly people.

Reserve drivers required for very occasional rides when the regular drivers cannot come.
