Dear Ferndown & West Parley! Well I have to say that we have had a very easy summer this year. Hayden spent three fabulous weeks at Grandma and Grandad’s up in Hull. The house was rather ‘empty’ to say the least and I was very glad to have him back, but knowing he learns all sorts of skills from sorting the maggots out for fishing, to planting seeds and an oak tree, to baking a fruit crumble, to cleaning the lawn mower and even washing the doors ready for decorating… I am more than happy to let him have fun! Unfortunately he is not quite so keen at home… It is our family holiday this week so I do hope we get some sunshine. It certainly has been mixed weather. Here in The Ferndown & West Parley Directory we have many local tradesmen and businesses offering their help. The full index at the back gives the whole range of services available. Please do call them whenever you need something done in the house. This really does make all the difference and I thank you for supporting the local people. There are some interesting articles this month too...one from The West Parley Parish Council, also see the winners of The Ferndown C ha mber of Commerce business premises competition, find out about the ’proud’ giant at Cerne Abbas, the dazzling dragonflies and many more. The lucky winner of the prize last month was Mrs Thomas. Well done! This month there is a free DVD and a pair of tickets to see Mantovani at The Bournemouth Pavilion in October. Great prize! Wishing you a good month of September,

Carnival Business Premises Competition 2011
The Ferndown Chamber of Commerce, supported by The Ferndown Town Council, decided after feedback from a number of members and local business to change their Carnival competition. Rather than look for the best window dressing or display, the focus was placed on the whole overall impression of the public side of the business premises, which showed clarity of purpose, a warm welcome and contributed to the image of the town as a whole. The competition was open to members and non-members alike in and around the centre of Ferndown. All participants obviously took great pride in their premises and it was indeed very difficult to choose a winner. Businesses taking part included: Julia’s House, Xerocad, Dorset Book Exchange, Bernard Perry Optometrists, The Bay Tree, Trevor Phillips, The Practice at Ferndown, T ur bar y Wine s and also F e rndown Photographic. The winning premises this summer was decided to be that of Bernard Perry
Winner — Bernard Perry Optometrists
TFWPD September 2011 page 10
Winners Certificate presented by Ferndown Mayor Optometrists and the judges commented that their premises were “in keeping with surroundings… eye-catching at a distance… draws you in.” Here you can see the winners, Veronica Cuxac of Bernard Perry Optometrists (left), being presented by Ferndown Mayor, Cllr John Muggleton (centre) and Christine Shade (right), President of The Ferndown Chamber of Commerce. Other premises that caught the judges eyes were Julia’s House with their “Space” themed window display, Turbary Wines for their colourful and striking images, and Xerocad for their much praised hanging baskets and tubs. Also, having only been in the town for 18 months, Dorset Book Exchange were awarded a new prize for Best Newcomer for their eagerness and participation — well done! The Ferndown Chamber of Commerce and Ferndown Town Council would like to thank all the business that took part and look forward to continuing to make Ferndown a great place to live and work!

WEST PARLEY PARISH COUNCIL West Parley’s Parish Plan A highlight of the last 2 months was the very successful Open Day to let everyone see how the Parish Plan was shaping up. Some 500 residents came through the memorial hall on the afternoon of July 19. The Plan’s ideas on housing community facilities, roads and traffic, the environment, shops, crime and safety were all on display and open to comment. Also with stands and displays were the Church, the Women’s Institute, the Mothers Union, the Partnership for Older People – and the Police had a popular new initiative in the form of a “Garden Shed” containing all manner of safety devices on show and on sale. The Parish Plan got underway in August 2010. The central feature was an all house survey, completed by a thousand residents. Their opinions gave a solid basis for the Plan and the Open Day built on this. It is expected that the Plan will be published this Autumn and will show what sort of West Parley we want in 5 to 10 years time and what is expected from District and County Councils.
Traffic The Council, together with P.A.C.T. (Partners and Communities Together, the police/community organisation) is looking into road safety improvements: • Measures to slow traffic at the lower end of Church Lane. • Putting a central refuge crossing in New Road between Parley Cross and Kinson. • Moving the bus stop outside the shops back on the grass verge. • Asking County Council to reduce West Parley speed limits. Residents views on the above measures will be welcomed.
Street Lights
Entry Signs to West Parley
The street lights in the following roads are soon to be renewed: Cammel Road, Linden Close, Christchurch Road (215 to 374) New Road (bridge to 294) Residents affected will be notified by SSE contracting/Dorset County Council prior to the works starting. Most lights will stay where they are but some will be moved and there will be some new ones. Plans can be seen on the W.P.P.C. website. If you have any queries call S.S.E. on 0800 068 4145.
New and more welcoming Entry Signs to West Parley have been designed and commissioned, so the West Parley will be up to the standard of our neighbours. They should be in place in a couple of months.

in West Parley; find some interesting walks; look at W.P.’s long history; read the news on events and developments affecting the village. And tell us what you think! And the most recent development – the Council is now on Facebook and Twitter – see website for links.
Council Meetings These are always open to the public and residents can make their points to the Council. Meetings are at 7.30pm on the 3rd Wednesday of every month at the MS Centre in Church Lane. The Planning Committee usually meets on Wednesdays between Council meetings; details are on the notice boards and website. Residents are welcome to come and to speak. Do remember though that it is the District Council not the Parish Council that decides all planning applications – we are only one of many voices.
West Parley Volunteers The Council is proud and appreciative of the village’s team of some 80 volunteers active in clearing litter, watering flowers, clearing pavements and hedges and distributing information – it must be one of the largest such volunteer teams around. Think about joining if you have an hour or two to spare now and then. Get
outside, meet new people – as well as helping the community it can be quite enjoyable. Call volunteer co-ordinator Alan Macdonald on 01202 571349. Talking about wildlife with
Dazzling Dragonflies Dragonflies are amongst our most ancient insects, having been around for about 300 million years. In Britain, they are divided into two sub-orders of the insect family Odonata: dragonflies and damselflies. Damselflies are the smaller and weaker flier of the two, tending to stay close to their aquatic habitats, unlike dragonflies, which are stronger and more adventurous. Dragonflies have featured for centuries in many folk legends and myths, revered in some cultures and feared in others. Despite their old folklore name ‘the horse stinger’,they are harmless to humans and neither bite nor sting. Dragonflies require a steady supply of water with plenty of vegetation, and can be found near rivers, ponds and canals, thriving in unpolluted water, therefore being reliable indicators of good water quality. They go through three life stages; egg, larva and adult. The aquatic larvae are formidable predators and generally feed on anything smaller than themselves: small fish, ta d p o le s, a n d e v e n other larvae. The adults prey on other flying insects such as moths, m i d g e s a n d mosquitoes. They are excellent and agile fliers, and rely on their eyesight when hunting.
TFWPD September 2011 page 22
The complete life cycle of the dragonfly is anywhere from a few months to a few years, the adult being the shortest, usually a couple of weeks. Dragonflies are devoted sun worshippers and at their most active in good weather at the height of summer. In Britain, they face threats such as habitat destruction and fragmentation, as well as pollution, and species of British dragonflies have become extinct in the last few decades. Dorset Wildlife Trust’s Upton Heath reserve has recently been named in the top 40 sites in the UK for dragonflies and September is a great month to look for them. If you would like to join Dorset Wildlife Trust’s Dragonfly Group to help record sightings around the county, email Andrew Brown on: brown_a_r@yahoo.co.uk Common Blue Damselfly

MANTOVANI:HOLLYWOOD TO BROADWAY BOURNEMOUTH PAVILION THEATRE — SUN 16 OCT 2011, 7.30PM After three previous sold out concerts Paul Barrett and Franck Leprince, in association with Kenneth Mantovani, bring the sound of Mantovani back to the Bournemouth Pavilion Theatre with, Mantovani – Hollywood to Broadway on Sunday 16 October 2011. The show takes you on a nostalgic journey from Hollywood to Broadway, featuring movie and musical classics. Hear the unique Mantovani sound in Fiddler on the Roof, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Gone With The Wind, South Pacific and Dr Zhivago. His countless fans will also love to hear Mantovani’s multi-million selling hits including Charmaine, Moulin Rouge, Some Enchanted Evening and many more. Local promoter and lifelong Mantovani fan, Paul Barrett, insists on recreating the full might of the original Mantovani Orchestra and he dismisses several money-saving suggestions in his bid to precisely replicate Mantovani’s original instrumental line-up. This doesn’t come cheap but he has no regrets. “It’s what I choose to spend my money on and I am absolutely delighted with the result,” he explains. “I could be buying luxury cruises or top of the range cars but what I wanted more than anything else was to recreate the Mantovani Orchestra and I’ve done it.”

overall contributor to happiness. People with strong and broad social relationships are happier, healthier and live longer. Close relationships with family and friends provide love, meaning, support and increase our feelings of self worth. Broader networks bring a sense of belonging. So taking action to strengthen our relationsh ip s and create n ew connections is essential for happiness. XERCISING — Take care of your body Our body and our mind are connected. Being active makes us happier as well as being good for our physical health. It instantly improves our mood and can even lift us out of a depression. We don't all need to run marathons there are simple things we can all do to be more active each day. We can also boost our well-being by unplugging from technology, getting outside and making sure we get enough sleep! PPRECIATING — Notice the world around Ever felt there must be more to life? Well good news, there is! And it's right here in front of us. We just need to stop and take notice. Learning to be more mindful and aware can do wonders for our well-being in all areas of life - like our walk to work, the way we eat or our relationships. It helps us get in tune with our feelings and stops us dwelling on the past or worrying about the future - so we get more out of the day-to-day. RYING OUT — Keep learning new things Learning affects our well-being in lots of positive ways. It exposes us to new ideas and helps us stay curious and engaged. It

10 Keys to Happier Living
G
IVING — Do things for others Caring about others is fundamental to our happiness. Helping other people is not only good for them and a great thing to do, it also makes us happier and healthier too. Giving also creates stronger connections between people and helps to build a happier society for everyone. And it's not all about money - we can also give our time, ideas and energy. So if you want to feel good, do some good!

ELATING — Connect with people Relationships are the most important

Find us online at www.ferndowndirectory.co.uk also gives us a sense of accomplishment and helps boost our self-confidence and resilience. There are many ways to learn new things - not just through formal qualifications. We can share a skill with friends, join a club, learn to paint and draw, be artistic and so much more.
D
IRECTION — Have goals to look forward to Feelin g good abou t th e futu re is important for our happiness. We all need goals to motivate us and these need to be challenging enough to excite us, but also achievable. If we try to attempt the impossible this brings unnecessary stress. Choosing ambitious but realistic goals gives our lives direction and brings a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction when we achieve them.
R
ESILIENCE — Find ways to bounce back All of us have times of stress, loss, failure or trauma in our lives. But how we respond to these has a big impact on our well-being. We often cannot choose what happens to us, but we can choose our own attitude to what happens. In practice it’s not always easy, but one of the most exciting findings from recent research is that resilience, like many other life skills, can be learned.
37
A
CCEPTANCE — Be comfortable with who you are No-one's perfect. But so often we compare our insides to other people's outsides. Dwelling on our flaws - what we're not rather than what we've got - makes it much harder to be happy. Learning to accept ourselves, warts and all, and being kinder to ourselves when things go wrong, increases our enjoyment of life, our resilience and our well-being. It also helps us accept others as they are.
M
EANING — Be part of something bigger People who have meaning and purpose in their lives are happier, feel more in control and get more out of what they do. They also experience less stress, anxiety and depression. But where do we find 'meaning and purpose'? It might be our religious faith, being a parent or doing a job that makes a difference. The answers vary for each of us but they all involve being connected to something bigger than ourselves. For more details go visit: www.actionforhappiness.org Compiled by Gerry Attrick
E
MOTION — Take a positive approach Positive emotions – like joy, gratitude, contentment, inspiration, and pride – are not just great at the time. Recent research shows that regularly experiencing them creates an 'upward spiral', helping to build our resources. So although we need to be realistic about life's ups and downs, it helps to focus on the good aspects of any situation – see the glass half full rather than half empty.

Youth achievement recognised Girls swept the board at this year’s student Rotary Awards at Ferndown Upper School, with Lauren Spencer, Natasha Wakelin, Charlotte Durling and Amy Kirkham being recognised for going that extra yard, for their outstanding achievements over a range of activities both in school and within the wider community. Lauren Spencer and Natasha Wakelin shared the honours for the community service award, giving of their evenings, weekends and holidays to ‘Become a Befriender’ - supporting those less able in doing what any other might do. Amy Kirkham picked up the award for sports, for gymnastics, for obtaining and then using her professional coaching qualification to train youngsters while not only judging but also competing at events, all this while still producing high quality work as part of her A level studies.
Speaking of the awards, the President of Ferndown Rotary Club Antonino Perella said: ‘At a time when youth too often attracts headlines for the wrong reasons, its great to be able to show the flip side. ‘Its also gratifying to know that the four we have recognised today were the best from many in the school that were considered for any one of the awards.’ ‘The four of them a re a c r e d i t t o themselves and to Ferndown Upper School,’ he closed. Ferndown Rotary
Charlotte Durling collected the award for endeavour – turning out work of degree standard while also participating in an array other activities including a Tall Ships voyage and the Duke of Edinburgh Gold award plus contributing to the school jazz band. The winners collected a shield and a cheque for £30.00.

Year round pleasure from your plot Grass Masterclasses at Knoll Gardens Knoll Gardens now has limited availability for its autumn season of Grass M aste rclasse s. He ld in K no ll’s impressive four-acre show garden each Masterclass is personally led by Neil Lucas, Knoll’s owner and the UK’s leading ornamental grass specialist. The Masterclasses are centred on a tour of the Dorset garden with its impressive backdrop of rare and unusual shrubs. They cover all aspects of using grasses in a garden setting to achieve the modern naturalistic style for which Knoll is now well known. They also provide an accessible, informative and fun insight into gardening the ‘Knoll way’ including layout and design, border preparation, choice of plants, general care and cultivation. The cost is just £30 which includes a cream tea. “Knoll is at its best in autumn when many other gardens are past their peak,” said Neil. “Grasses are simply stunning late season plants and we actually extend our opening times to include

Sundays in September and October. Our Masterclasses are designed to help gardeners find out how to extend their own gardening year, and achieve year-round pleasure from their plot – regardless of its size.” Grass Masterclasses take place on 15th and 24th September and 6th and 13nd October. This year Knoll is also hosting an RHS Grass Masterclass on 22nd September. Professional garden designers are also catered for with two specialised Grass Masterclasses. A SHOCKING FACT ABOUT THE CERNE GIANT’S VITAL STATISTIC
E
veryone knows Dorset’s Cerne Giant – the chalk hill-figure brandishing a huge club on a hillside near the village of Cerne Abbas. And he’s brandishing a lot more besides, as he’s the only legally allowed pornographic image in Britain. The Giant has always provided plenty of scope for speculation and wonder, tinged, perhaps, with a little envy. No one has really solved the problems of when he was made, or by whom, or why. Unless you are unusually naïve or myopic, the most startling feature about the Giant is his gargantuan whatsit, which measures 23ft 7 ins (7.2m) in length – getting on for the length of a London bus. You may be forgiven for thinking that whoever originally designed this iconic feature had a tendency to exaggerate. However, recent research suggests, quite shockingly, that the thingummy was actually lengthened about the year 1908 – just over a century ago. Previously to that year, pictures of the Giant show him with a huge circular navel. Pictures after that date show him without the navel, but with a very much larger piece of manhood – which had obviously been lengthened to incorporate the navel previously situated above its tip.
TFWPD September 2011 page 42
The clear explanation is that some joker about that time had carefully and secretly cut the turf between youknow-what and the navel, and had then obliterated the bottom half of the navel. The intended result was that the top of the navel then became the top of the penis (oops, I’ve said it!). If that is the case, then the earlier, pre-1908 objet d’art was a mere 15ft 8 ins (4.8m). Who was the Edwardian practical joker? Did he ever make a deathbed confession?
---------------------------------And speaking of Cerne, it’s a wellknown fact that lovers hoping to produce a baby have traditionally had a snuggle on that very circumlocutory place. Indeed, a titled member of the aristocracy was so successful in this endeavour that he and his partner actually gave the resulting daughter the middle name of Cerne.
--------------------------------Cerne has many legends. For instance, St Augustine is said to have gone there to convert its inhabitants. He and his missionaries were met with scorn and derision, and had cows’ tails pinned onto the backs of their habits. The saint got his own back, however, and to their embarrassment the villagers of

Another legend tells how St Augustine gave the village its well. He asked the locals whether they wanted beer or water – and when they tactually opted for water he struck the ground and created a well for them. The abbey has long disappeared, but St Augustine’s well still exists there. As for the Giant, it was believed by the locals that he was a real ogre who ravaged the land around Cerne, particularly annoying farmers by stealing their sheep. At last, helped by the fairies, the inhabitants managed to capture him, flatten him out, and then
43
permanently pin him down on a convenient hillside. Today, Cerne is well worth visiting, as one of the prettiest villages in Dorset.
-----------------------------These stories and many more can be found in David Hilliam’s most recent book, The Little Book of Dorset which has Dorset’s red, yellow and white flag on the cover (£9.99 from most bookshops). David is a local writer and lecturer, and is also the Secretary of the Southbourne Literary Society. David Hilliam can be contacted on 01202 251356 or by email at davidhilliam@ntlworld.com.
