Dear Lyndhurst, So the holiday time is upon us. Hayden, our son, has gone to Grandma and Grandad’s for a couple of weeks up North. He could not wait to get in the car! When I called this evening and Grandma asked if he wanted to speak to me, his casual response was “No that’s fine”. I guess he is doing well then! Funny aren’t they. I can’t blame him… boat trips, steam engines, fishing, parks, games and undivided attention. That’s what Grandparents are for hey. We are very lucky. I hope if you are a grandparent that you get to see your grandchildren too. So — despite all the fun of the summer (and I do hope we get some more sunshine) do take a look through The Lyndhurst Directory and get some help in the house, have a new, bespoke kitchen fitted, contact a good solicitor, sell some valuable stamps, have a meal out at the Sway Manor Hotel, have some dentistry done, have the car fully serviced, put your house on the market, or indeed get lots of things done that you haven’t gotten around to yet. All of the advertisers inside will be very willing to help. Please give them a call and do mention The Lyndhurst Directory! I always love to hear that the local people are getting lots of calls. There are of course many articles from local organisations and clubs who would also love to hear from you. The very lucky winner of the Hot Air Balloon Flight was Stuart Holley! Well done to you. We will have a photo of him in the next issue. This month the prize is a LoJo Ball. Good luck. Steve and I wish you all a fabulous summer!! Very Best Wishes,

Highcliffe Castle Launches Its Summer Exhibition As tradition dictates, Highcliffe Castle will be holding their annual in-house historical exhibition this summer in the main Library Gallery. Each year, the Castle writes and produces their own exhibition, showcasing an interesting subject from the Castle’s history. This year, the subject is “How The Other Half Lived”, a fascinating look at country house life in the early Twentieth Century. Highcliffe Castle is a classic example of an English Country House. Built in the 1830s as a rural retreat for Lord Stuart de Rothesay it was during the first half of the Twentieth Century that it really saw its heyday as a venue for country house parties for members of High Society. In 1891 the Castle passed into the ownership of Edward Stuart Wortley (a d istan t relati ve of th e Stu art d e Rothesays). In this exhibition we will look at the family, the wealthy people that rented the Castle and their famous guests. During this time the Castle was used for shooting parties, magnificent balls and for convalescing. We will also take a look at how the other half lived by looking at the servants lives in th e Ca stl e at th i s t im e. F ro m housemaids to cooks and gardeners, a dedicated team of staff were required to run the Castle and provide for its important guests. By the middle of the Twentieth century life in the English Country House was in decline. With fewer people in service and
TLD August 2011 page 6
rising maintenance costs grand houses across the country were in trouble. Here we see that the Castle was no exception. Anna Burgess, Events & Exhibitions Officer says: “We will be recreating room displays from upstairs and downstairs in the Castle, as well as bringing the stories to life in pictures and words. Although Highcliffe Castle no longer has it’s rich interiors on display, this is the perfect opportunity to see how the building may have looked during its time as a private home”. The exhibition runs from the 23rd July to the 11th September from 11am each day. Admission charges for the Castle are £2.95 for adults with children under 16 free. For more information on events and exhibitions at Highcliffe Castle visit www.highcliffecastle.co.uk, or telephone 01425 278807.

New Forest Association appoints new Chairman The 144-year-old New Forest Association is delighted to announce the election of Peter Roberts as its new Chairman. A former Amenity Verderer, Peter has been involved with the Association for more than twenty years. He has taken lead roles in the New Forest CPRE as well as being a past President of the Hampshire Field Club. He represents the NFA at both local level on the Consultative Panel, and also nationally for the Campaign for National Parks as a council member. A former orienteer, cyclist and runner (he recently completed a 26-mile charity walk for Wiltshire Wildlife - the Sarsen Trail), Peter is committed to developing the NFA’s strength as a major force for conservation and protection. He believes that his task is to help create the conditions for the organisation to bring the message of the importance and fragility of the New Forest to a new generation.
photographer, often combining history, wildlife and the Forest into a day’s walk. Peter paid tribute to the outgoing NFA Chairman, William Ziegler. “William Ziegler's infectious enthusiasm has carried many a project in the last ten years,” he said. “He steered a middle course, when it was needed, in negotiations that led to the implementation of a National Park. His pragmatism then ensured that the NFA worked with the emerging Authority to achieve the best from it. “He worked hard with other stalwarts to set up a 'show team' that continues to tour in the summer carrying our message. He also led the team and was involved in a huge amount of work that made the National Park Societies Conference in 2008 such a success at Foxlease. He has maintained good communications with many other Forest organisations, in particular the Verderers, offering support and ideas for the benefit of the Forest.”
“We must embrace modern technology in ensuring that our successors understand that the pressures on the New Forest are greater than ever and cannot continue without unacceptable further erosion,” he said. No stranger to campaigning, Peter, alongside outgoing Chairman William Ziegler, most recently played a major part in the NFA's successful campaign to thwart the coalition government's Forest Estate sell-off plans. A keen local historian, he has written a number of specialist books and articles on the Forest and was responsible, with Richard Reeves, for the publication of five volumes in the New Forest Record Series published by the New Forest Centre. Peter’s experience includes owning and managing an electrical retail business in Hythe before turning to recycling - running a secondhand bookshop at Ashurst for ten years with his partner Georgina Babey. An enthusiastic user of the Forest, he is also a keen

Age UK Bournemouth Highlights Need For Accident Prone Nation To Check Home Insurance Policies Latest claims data from Age UK Home Insurance, has revealed that the UK could be becoming more accident prone. The data indicates that the number of claims (1) for accidental damage in the home has slowly been on the rise over the past four years. Between 2007 and 2010 inclusive there has been a 28% increase in claim numbers. As a consequence, Age UK Bournemouth is urging people in Bournemouth, Poole, Christchurch and the surrounding areas to be sure they know the details of their home insurance policy and continue to review it if circumstances change. It is essential to have the right policy with the appropriate level of cover to suit each individual’s needs. This way people can appreciate exactly what they are covered for, ensuring you will not be out of pocket, should the worst happen and a claim is made. Age UK Home Insurance(2) currently offers buildings and contents cover with added benefits including, a 24 hour domestic emergency helpline and importantly no age limits or hidden charges such as instalment charges or administration fees.

VULCAN EFFECT SPREADS TO A SECOND DISPLAY Avro Vulcan confirmed for second Festival appearance Bournemouth Air Festival organisers have confirmed that the mighty Avro Vulcan will now be able to display twice thanks to the support of S&D Leisure, who are supporting Saturday’s display, and Bournemouth Airport, the appearance supporter for Sunday.
Jon Weaver, Bournemouth Air Festival director says; “What a great addition to an already great flying programme. We’re so pleased to have the Vulcan for a second display, so a big thank you to S&D Leisure and Bournemouth Airport for their generous contribution.”
Stanley Reeves, owner of S&D Leisure said; “We’re proud to support the Vulcan display on Saturday where she’ll be joining the Red Arrows and Tornado Role Demo for what I’m sure will be another great Festival ‘power hour’. It’s certainly going to get loud!”
The Bournemouth Air Festival will be taking place at Bournemouth seafront on August 18th to the 21st and boasts a line up that includes the Red Arrows and The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight.
Sally Windsor from Bournemouth Airport said; “The Vulcan is such a tremendous crowd-puller at every event she displays at, so the opportunity to bring her to Bournemouth was too tempting to pass up.” The imposing bomber is operated by the Vulcan to the Sky Trust, who are delighted at the opportunity to display a second time. CEO of the Trust Dr Robert Pleming said; “We have always said that Bournemouth is a real highlight for us. The flight path along the beach is glorious, the huge crowds very enthusiastic and the reception to the Vulcan is always extremely warm, so we’re very grateful to S&D Leisure for allowing us to extend the Vulcan effect to a second display”.

August’s Gardening Tips From Paul Chatfield of Chatfield’s Garden & Property Services Always give your plants good thoughts! Trees and Shrubs Some trees and shrubs that have flowered can now be pruned. They should be pruned after flowering. If bearing fruit, prune after cropping.
Climbers and Wall-Plants Clematis shoots are now in vigorous growth, if training regularly secure them to their supports. Wisteria can be pruned back to four or five leaves now.
Roses If there are two few new canes one or two of the oldest strong ones can be kept; cut back their side shoots to between four and six inches (ten to fifteen cms).
Borders and Beds To keep up the vigour of flowering plants they should be watered well and fed fortnightly. Give a good mulch afterwards. Always pick flowers regularly.
Bulbs and Corms Daffodil bulbs that were lifted after flowering and placed in store should be planted towards end of month, or any spring bulbs.
Fruit As soon as the last fruit has been picked all su mmer-fru iting raspberries & blackcurrants should be pruned before the end of the month.
Vegetables All spring vegetables should be sown in the first two weeks of August e.g. cabbage, radish, parsley, winter spinach.
Greenhouse and Frame Cyclamen tubers rested during the summer may be started into growth again, knock them from their pots and replant them in potting compost.
House Plants While away, to keep plants well watered place them in a large clear bag with a little water in the bottom, blowing up bag and tied tight. Rock Gardens and pools Old flowering stems should be cut down to prevent from unwanted reseeding. Be sure to keep pools filled to make up for loss by evaporation.
Lawns To make a new lawn or fill in bare patches seed should be sown before the end of the month.

West Moors Artist, Paul Dolman, Paints the Red Arrows for 2011 Bournemouth Air Show Local artist, Paul Dolman, has produced an original oil painting of the Red Arrows, sized at 39” x 20”, which will be professionally framed and signed by the current pilots in the Red Arrows on 5th August. The painting is being raffled for charity during the 2011 annual Bournemouth Air Show. Raffle tickets are on sale at £5 per ticket and are available from now until the 21st August 2011. To order your tickets or a print of the painting, call Paul Dolman at his studio in 92 Moorlands Road, West Moors, Dorset, on 01202 897246.
Paul’s work can also be viewed on his website at www.padart.co.uk. Or visit the air show where the painting will be exhibited at the Miramar Hotel on the Bournemouth sea front from 18th August 2011. Proceeds from the raffle will be donated to a local charity. By doing a raffle rather than an a u ct i o n , t h e y h o p e t o gi ve everyone a chance at winning and aim to raise around £4000 for the chosen local charity. Good luck to everyone who takes part, it is an amazing painting and will make a great addition to anyone’s wall!
