New Forest Association appalled at Forestry Commission sell off plans The New Forest Association has hit out at Government plans to sell off the 'crown jewels' of the New Forest, labelling the plans “appalling”. The charity has also warned that the plans, published today (January 27), could lead to people being charged to use the New Forest. “Plans to find a charity to run the New Forest show a complete lack of understanding of how the forest works,” said New Forest Association Chairman William Ziegler. “In the 64 page Government consultation document 1 there is no reference to the commoning system, which has created and m a i n t a i n e d th e f o r e s t f o r a l l t o appreciate. “This new threat is the most serious attack on the New Forest for 160 years. Any charity that takes on owning and managing the New Forest will be required to find its own funding after initial government help to offset the £2.9m annual deficit. This could mean charging the public for access to the New Forest and will almost certainly involve selling off parts of the estate which currently provide the cornerstone of commoning.”
particular the keepers have huge local and specialist knowledge of the wildlife which should not be swept away at the stroke of a Whitehall pen,” he said. “We are shocked by the proposals - the Government must be left in no doubt as to the real value of the New Forest and we commend everyone that cares about the area to let their thoughts be known to DEFRA.” The New Forest Association, formed in 1867, is a charitable organisation which has over 140 years of experience in working to preserve, conserve and protect the New Forest. It was formed at a time when Government measures threatened to sell off the New Forest in the middle of the 19th century. The Association is dedicated to the preservation, conservation and protection of the New Forest and is a membership based organization. Further information can be found at: www.newforestassociation.org
Mr Ziegler said the existing system of management, involving the various but interlocking interests of commoning, conservation, timber production and recreation, would be lost alongside the expertise that the Forestry Commission has gained over many decades. “The Forestry Commission’s staff and in

Make a Lasting Power of Attorney Have you ever thought about what would happen to your assets and affairs, such as your home, savings or bank accounts, if you became unable to manage things for yourself in later life? Or what if you were to suffer a debilitating stroke, or develop Alzheimer’s? In most instances an application would need to be made to the Court of Protection to obtain a court order appointing a deputy to manage your affairs on your behalf. The process is costly, time consuming and can result in a decision being made that you may not have necessarily made yourself. The alternative is much better, simpler and cheaper: make a lasting power of attorney (LPA) now. An LPA is a legal document where you can give the person or persons of your choice (called attorneys) authority to make decisions on your behalf. You can decide who will act for you, when and in what circumstances, and what the scope of their authority will be. There are two types of LPA. You can make either or both. A Property and Finance LPA (PF LPA) gives your attorneys authority to deal with your property and finances as you specify whether you have or lack mental capacity. A Health and Welfare LPA (HW LPA) allows your attorneys to make welfare and health care decisions on your behalf, but only when you lack mental capacity to do so yourself. This could also extend, if you wish, to giving or refusing consent to the continuation of life sustaining treatment. Once you have decided who you want to act for you, and the LPA has been
TLD February 2011 page 6
prepared, the procedure is very simple. You sign the LPA in front of an independent person such as your solicitor who will ensure that you fully understand and are happy with the LPA. Your chosen attorneys then sign. The LPA is then registered at the Office of the Public Guardian. Once registered, the PF LPA can be used as and when needed. The HW LPA can be used only if you become mentally incapable of making health and welfare decisions. In my opinion LPAs rank alongside Wills as vitally important documents that ideally every capable adult should have in place. I tend to think of LPAs as insurance policies - and cheap ones at that. They are the simplest and most effective way of allowing the persons of your choice to manage your affairs, in the way that you want them to. True, an LPA may never need to be used - all well and good - but if it is needed, which is often the case in later life, a considerable amount of time and money would have been saved, and a period of uncertainty and anxiety avoided. I am a Solicitor in Scott Bailey LLP’s Private Client department which specialises in Lasting Powers of Attorney, Wills, Probate, Trust and Inheritance Tax planning matters. Are You Planning An Event This Year? Most of us at some stage of our busy lives will need to cater for an important event be it a Wedding, Christening, Birthday, Special Anniversary, or Passing of Exams. Immediately several questions are first and foremost in our minds: • How much will it cost? • Where will we hold it?
A little time to discuss the planning and catering for your special event whatever it may be will enable you to relax in the knowledge that all those worries associated with organising the event can be taken away ensuring your enjoyment and complete satisfaction on your special day! Sally Curtis Catering
• What sort of food shall we have? • How many people can we invite? To cater for an event in a hotel can be expensive. So many times I have been to visit a client and the problem faced is much that we would love to hold our celebration here, we don’t have a lot of room. A relatively small garden can house a marquee these days. With the new frame systems that are available they come in all sorts of shapes and sizes. This option can enable one to extend the guest list for a wedding or larger party without that never ending problem of the guest list. Other options can be making enquiries locally for venue’s that are available for hire. These are usually moderately priced and providing they have an adequate kitchen area can be an ideal solution. As an independent caterer for over 25 years, we can adapt to most situations as indeed I have had to sometimes deal with last minute anxieties but always ending up with a positive result. The benefits of a Caterer can mean that your precise requirements can be met both with your choice of menu and the venue.

February’s Gardening Tips From Paul Chatfield of Chatfield’s Garden & Property Services Trees and Shrubs There is still time to plant trees and shrubs if th e ta sk h a s n ot b e en al re ad y completed. Making sure the holes are dug big enough and deep enough for the root ball, also taking in consideration to use a good tree and shrub compost. Climbers and Wall-Plants Species and cultivars of Clematis that flower Summer & Autumn on new shoots made in the current season will benefit from a hard prune now.
Fruit There is still time for both planting and pruning but try to complete task before new growth starts. Vegetables Seed potatoes should be removed from their bags and set to sprout in trays or shallow boxes (shed or greenhouse). Greenhouse and Frame Greenhouse should have been sterilized. Carnations and Chrysanthemums can be propagated from cuttings 55-60f (13-15c). Give free ventilation except on cold nights.

Rock Gardens and Pools All leaves should have been removed by now. Mild spells may bring weeds & slugs, remove weeds while small and treat the slugs with slug bait (with suitable containers sunken in the ground, beer is a good tip.) Lawns There is still time to lay turf for a new lawn or to repair an old one. Not a good tip to lay in muddy or icy conditions.

WAGGY TAILS RESCUE, is a registered charity based in Ferndown. They rescue and re-home dogs that have been abandoned, neglected or otherwise in need of a good home.
Could I be your valentine? My name is Draco and I am a v er y hands om e Rot tw ei ler / Doberman cross, about 18 months old. I wouldn’t be here at all if Waggy Tails Rescue hadn’t sent a van up to the Pound I was in and collected me and some of my friends. We were all about to be put to sleep on Christmas Eve! But now we all have a second chance and, although they have brought me to a lovely foster home - I would really like someone special to love. I love people, but am not so keen on other dogs (and don’t mention the C. A. T word!). As you can see, I am a big, strong boy so need a big home with a large garden, or better still, some land which I could guard for you when I am not charging around! I have been well looked after (my previous owners neutered me and I am also microchipped) and, despite my size, I do love to be cuddled. Could I cuddle you please? For more information on Draco and his friends, please phone 01202 875000!
