Get fit while the kids have fun From 4th June you can get fit while the kids have fun at Moors Valley Country Park and Forest near Ringwood. That’s when the Park’s new Saturday morning Green Active Club is opening for families, offering a fantastic selection of fun activities that everyone can enjoy in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.

Spaces on some activities will be limited so if you are looking for a fun way to get the whole family fit and energised this summer booking is recommended. For more information speak to a Ranger on 01425 470721, send an email activate1000@eastdorset.gov.uk or go to www.moors-valley.co.uk.

Adult activities include Nordic Walking, BikeFit and Tai Chi, whilst children can go adventure cycling, play golf or take part in a great ‘Get Active Outdoors’ programme. Alternatively, families can get fit together with pitch and putt, fishing or on a family bike ride. “It can be hard to find time to keep fit and healthy when you are raising a family,” said Healthy Lifestyle Ranger, Karl Prince. “Our new Green Active Club has been designed to help solve the problem. We have organised a full programme of events so that the kids can have fun while mum and dad get some personal time and benefit from the expertise of our qualified instructors. Better still, we are keeping the costs right down, with Ranger-led children’s activities costing just £2.50 when parents are participating in the programme”. Adult and family activities start at 10am, but the children’s sessions start five minutes earlier to ensure everyone can enjoy a full hour of active fun. All adult sessions cost £4, children’s activities with participating adults cost £2.50 (£6 if parent is not on an activity) and child places on family activities cost just £2. Parking at the Moors Valley is free for the first three sessions.

East Boldre Painters Hold First Exhibition The East Boldre painters will be holding their first Exhibition in the Master Builders Hotel on the weekend of 2nd and 3rd July. This coincides with the two day Family Food and Drink Festival at the Hotel, and the Steamboat Rally and the Old Gaffers Rally in the Marina so a very busy weekend with plenty for everyone to do and see. This exhibition will show how varied the work produced by this small local group is, with something to appeal to everyone. All media are used in their artwork including water colour, oil, pastel, pen and ink and acrylic, with pictures including scenes of local interest. Paintings, both framed and in mounts will be available, together with hand-made cards. The East Boldre Painters Group started in 2003 as a group of residents who had taken a class together, and when the tutor left, the group stayed together, deciding to continue painting and drawing. They are all amateurs and their membership is currently 16, with people coming from Lymington, Boldre, Hythe and Totton, as well as East Boldre. They meet on Monday mornings to "do our own thing" and meet up with fellow artists in a casual relaxed atmosphere - a nice way to start the week. They also have occasional visits from professional artists for demonstrations, workshops and critiques and sometimes organise trips to galleries and local gardens. New members welcome. Mobility for the Disabled at The New Forest Show The New Forest Show & Hampshire County Show works hard to ensure that the disabled have good access and facilities at the Show. This includes not only parking safely near to the S h o wg ro u n d b u t al s o h a v in g t h e opportunity to book on site power chairs and scooters to take them around the showground. There are plenty of parking places for the disabled, however it has to be stressed that the stewards can only admit those cars with registered disabled stickers clearly displayed ( including the correct pass for the occupant) so please do not try to enter this car park if you are not in possession of a valid sticker – you will be refused. The Show has again invited Wheels for Freedom to be at the Show.

TLD June 2011 page 12

They specialise in helping the disabled enjoy local shows, by providing a range of scooters, power chairs and wheel chairs for hire on site. Training will be given to all users of equipment and if a person is not able to reach their base location just by the public entrance to the showground, because they have come by themselves, they will endeavour to bring it to them at the entrance gate of their choice. It is vital that anyone wishing to take up this offer, books in advance by ringing Wheels of Freedom on 01202 670450 or by going to their website at www.wheelsforfreedom.org.uk and following the Out N’ About link to the New Forest Show. This will help the charity try and ensure that all demands are met. If you read this and know of a friend or neighbour who would benefit from this facility please let them know, so they can come and enjoy the Show.

New Forest District Council donation to Fenwick2 gets hearts pumping! People attending Fenwick2’s gym and Healthy Horizons classes can now work even harder on their six packs. Fenwick2 community health and wellbeing centre at Pike’s Hill, Lyndhurst, has benefitted from a donation of exercise equipment from New Forest District Council’s Applemore health and leisure centre on the Waterside. The donation came about through Healthy Horizons trainer Lottie Kirwin, who works at both centres. Applemore had a range of Easyline Technogym equipment that it no longer used and had room for, so it will now be used to enhance New Forest District Council’s Healthy Horizons scheme at Fenwick2. The scheme runs for 12 weeks at a time for people referred by their GP. It allows people with medical conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, chest complaints, heart problems, depression, stress or those recovering from op eration s to exercise in the Fen wick2 gy m at a subsidised cost. The equipment, delivered a few weeks ago is suitable for all ages and levels of ability and can now be used by individual gym users at Fenwick2 as well as other visitors, such as people attending the dementia respite service.

TLD June 2011 page 14

“We are delighted by this gift and we have already started using it,” said Fenwick2 manager Wendy Bolt. “I understand that this equipment is mad e by th e official suppliers of equipment to the World Cup and the Olympics. We might not be quite up to that standard but we can still make good use of it for our private gym users and for our other clients. I’d like to say a very big thank you to Applemore for thinking of us.” Fitness manager at Applemore, Richard Bell, said: “The equipment is very mobile and so makes excellent use of space. The pieces we have donated are enough to work all the major muscle groups in the body. The equipment was built to form a circuit and there was little point in selling it individually for home use, so we decided to donate it.” To find out more about Fenwick2, call 023 8028 2862 or visit www.fenwick2.co.uk.

June’s Gardening T ips From Paul Chatfield of Chatfield’s Garden & Property Services Trees and Shrubs

Fruit

Several of the shrubs that bloom on wood made during the previous year may be pruned as soon as flowers fade.

Inspect apple and pear trees and remove anything that looks bad, the same with strawberries, also making sure there is a good straw mat for fruit.

Climbers and Wall-Plants The half hardy annual climbers that have been raised under glass or protected can now be planted on a south facing wall or fence, well supported.

Roses

Vegetables Several of the less hardy plants can be p lan ted ou t n o w eg. a u b ergin e s, cucumbers, marrows, peppers, tomatoes and sweet corn.

All varieties of garden roses will be coming into bloom this month, fading flowers should be regularly removed to encourage the production of new ones.

Greenhouse and Frame

Borders and Beds

House Plants

As soon as blooms fade on early herbaceous perennials it is best to cut off the dead flower stems. Plant out halfhardy annuals raised under glass as soon as possible.

Leaves of foliage plants will benefit a light fine rain outside for no more than two hours. Watch out for aphids and other pests deal with them without delay.

Bulbs and Corms Remain in g b u lb s from th e sp rin g flowering should be lifted now. Dahlia tubers not yet planted should be put out now and well supported.

On summer days the temperature can rise very rapidly and to keep cool, water floors and benches twice daily.

Chatfield’s Garden & Property Services North 2, Sway Storage & Workshops Barrows Lane, Sway, Lymington Hants, SO41 6DD Tel: 01590 682828 Mobile: 07821 610923

Rock Gardens and pools Cut back old flower stems and other trailing plants to keep them trim and avoid them seeding. Continue with weeding and remove algae, weekly.

Lawns With our dry spells raise the mower blades to make the cut less close, remove the grass box for the time being. Isolated weeds can be treated again.
