New Forest Art Society have some events coming up. The WWI events at East Boldre were a great success and Nellie took us to The Wheels Festival in Bournemouth! What fun we had and what great photos Stephen took. If you have any local news, then we can help you shout about it. We also like to shout about our loyal, local advertisers. If you have a testimonial about one or two of them, then please do send it to us. We will publish it to let everyone know what a great job they did. The lucky winner of the meal for two at Bistro 26 was Mrs Hazel King! Well done to you and we hope you have a great evening out. Will you be the lucky winner this month? Wishing you wonderful months of June and July,

30 Days Wild
Some campaigns ask you for money. Others ask you to bake, grow a moustache or give up things that are bad for you. Well, The Wildlife Trusts not asking for you to give us something and we don’t want you to stop doing anything. All we want is for you to give yourself something – a little time with nature. Can you do something wild every day for a month? 30 Days Wild is a month-long nature challenge taking place this June. The Wildlife Trusts are asking you to make nature part of your daily! All the research shows that making time for a daily dose of nature does wonders for us. Even just 20 minutes in nature is enough to boost energy levels and improve our physical and mental wellbeing. So why not take the 30 Days Wild challenge – and see if you’ll be healthier and happier for it! Doing something wild every day for one month might sound daunting, but with a bit of planning, it’s easy to fit this into your daily routine. Your wild activity could include spending:

• a few minutes sowing wildflower seeds in a pot, photographing plants growing on a city centre wall on your lunch break, or closing your eyes to listen to the birdsong; • half an hour climbing a tree, having some ‘me time’ outdoors, or mixing a cocktail using an ingredient you’ve found in the wild; • a few hours searching a beach at low-tide, stargazing, or exploring a local wild place you’ve never been to before You’ll get emails throughout the month with links to things you can do near where you live, and other local activities to inspire you. We have more than 100 tips to inspire you and encourage you to find time for nature in your day-to-day life. You can also join in online and share your ideas with others using #30DaysWild. There are plenty of grown-up ideas for adults (a nature cocktail, anyone?) and children and families too. After all, nature makes us all feel young at heart, so why should kids have all the fun? We want to help people connect with the natural world around them. Research has shown that spending time in wild places can help you feel happier and healthier, and the more people who make nature part of their life, the more people there’ll be to help protect and restore it. All our lives are better when they’re a bit wild. Sign up before or during June at: wildlifetrusts.org/30DaysWild

CODA TRUST SEEKING MUSICIANS FOR EXCITING NEW FOREST MUSIC PROJECT Coda Music Trust is looking for Hampshire or Dorset based musicians, who enjoy the challenge of improvisation, to participate in “Songs For Wild Horses.” Coda is offering a fantastic opportunity to work with world-class musicians on a new creative collaboration. The project aims to create a new piece of music which will have its world premiere in the New Forest in October this year. Coda Music Trust and Hampshire based project, New Dimensions (Turner Sims and Anvil Arts) are working closely with Norwegian musicians Nils Okland (Hardanger Fiddle) and Oyvind Skarbo (Percussion) - both internationally renowned in the field of improvisation. Coda is looking for musicians of all instruments and genres - from experimental to folk, kit players, string players, electronics, singers and wind players - to work as an ensemble with both musicians to create a new piece under the title “Songs For Wild Horses”. Nils & Oyvind are coming to the UK for initial rehearsals on Saturday 13th June, 10:30 – 16:30, at Coda Music Centre, BH23 5QL. Participants will have the chance to work with them over the course of the day and will enjoy a fabulous free lunch at Coda!
Treehouse, Beaulieu The aim is that an ensemble will meet over the summer before Nils & Oyvind return to the UK for a weekend of workshops and pop up performances on 5th/6th September. Final rehearsals will be on Saturday 3rd October prior to a premiere performance at the atmospheric Treehouse in Beaulieu on Sunday 4th October. “If you would like to work with international acclaimed musicians and meet other players from across the region to create a unique composition and perform deep in the beautiful New Forest, please get in touch,” said Phil Hallett, Chief Executive of Coda Music Trust. To book your free place to be part of this exciting opportunity, please contact Coda on 01425 276161 or by email on contact@coda.org.uk

Gerdening Tips
on your
PLOT
Expand your horizons
Summer, sunshine and strawberries, June is a truly wonderful month! In this time of plentiful growth we take a look at making the most of your waste clippings by turning them into lovely rich compost to use next year, and also how to make the most of every inch of your space. Jobs for June:Take off the side shoots from tomato plants to avoid them becoming too bushy and overburdened with fruit. Water regularly. Garlic that was planted in the Autumn should be maturing now. Lift when the leaves start to shrivel and leave to dry in a warm spot. Keep planting - the moist soil, higher temperatures and long days are ideal growing conditions. French beans, courgettes and salad crops can all be sown now. Watch out for pests! Think about protecting brassicas before caterpillars start to become a problem.
Every year it amazes me how the plants respond so dramatically to the arrival of the warm weather. Anything sown or planted out in May seems to positively leap out of the ground and shoot skywards, in many cases quickly catching up with earlier sowings! Of course the lawn is no exception and if you don’t already have a composting system in place then why not set one up now and make use of some of those endless grass clippings? Ideally you want to have two (or even three) compost bins so that when one is ready to use for the garden you have another filling up and rotting down. You can buy allsorts of nifty looking, ready made, compost bins some even have clever devices that make it easy to turn the whole bin to help the waste break down - but you don’t need anything fancy. You can just start a compost heap in an out of the way corner, enclosing it with old pallets, or wire mesh wrapped around four stakes if you want to keep it looking a little neater. So what should you compost? Well any dead organic matter will decompose naturally but you should aim for a good mix of ‘green’ and ‘brown’ ingredients. Lawn trimmings, veg leaves and peelings provide the green element and you should add a reasonable balance of brown items such as shredded paper, straw, eggshells and even the contents of your vacuum cleaner bag. Turning the heap occasionally will accelerate the breakdown and covering with an old
023 8065 9309
carpet when it is full will also help. Leave for several months and you should have some great compost! June is also the time of year when it is easy to start to run out of space on your plot. Everything puts on amazing growth spurts and you are suddenly left wondering where you are going to plant out those tomatoes that you’ve been nurturing in the greenhouse, or finding you’ve no room for the cabbages that you’d like to be eating later in the year. Time to expand your horizons and make full use of containers and of your borders. Look at the different varieties of lettuce and salad crops many of these, along with cabbages, can add a splash of decorative, coloured foliage to your borders (and be eaten too!!!). Grow bags are wonderful for crops such as tomatoes, cucumbers and peppers. They’ll be happy in a sunny spot on your patio but do remember to water and feed regularly. Larger pots can house courgettes and pumpkins, with the exotic looking flowers adding a bright splash of colour. Even hanging baskets can get in on the grow your own act! Look for suitable strawberries or tomatoes and you could be treated to a bumper crop of luscious fruit tumbling down from above.

New Forest Arts Society A good few years ago I remember my mother-in-law going off, with her painting buddies, to paint en plein air and attend meetings of the Art Society held in Lyndhurst. Now it’s my turn, with my family being mildly amused, yet supportive, of my artistic activities! The New Forest Art Society (NFAS) is going into its 51st year. I am sure over that time it has changed but at the core is the aim to further the interests of artists in the New Forest area (and beyond). The Society welcomes visitors and new members. Are you a practising artist or recently returned to painting? Is painting a new found hobby? Perhaps you are interested in art generally but don’t consider yourself an artist. This eclectic mix describes the membership of the NFAS. Our styles range from representational to abstract, and all styles in-between, and members work in a variety of meduims, including the three dimensional. We share an enthusiastic passion to develop our skills and to spend time with like-minded people. Meetings are the third Wednesday of most months at Lyndhurst Community Centre from 7 – 9pm, when artists
working in a variety of styles/mediums, demonstrate their skills, or occasionally we have an art related talk. There are paint-out mornings and workshops. To exhibit and sell your work you need to be a member; our summer exhibition in August is being extended this year to take in two weekends and, new for 2015, we will be having a two day sale in December. There is no better accolade than that someone is prepared to pay for your art! On 17th June Bonnie Brown, professional artist, will be critiquing members works in progress. Bonnie ran a day long workshop with us in April – a wonderful day when we not only appreciated her artist skills but also her teaching skills. July 15th sees professional calligrapher Jan Picket demonstrating her skills and giving us an opportunity to try out in pen and ink. No meeting in August but the summer exhibition (watch out for the posters). Bring this article to your first meeting and the guest fee will be waivered. Membership enquires to janwheat@mypostoffice.co.uk Rachael Smith, Vice Chair NFAS smithrae@hotmail.com

IT’S ALL CHILDS PLAY
Putting the fun into Father’s Day By Sue Gascoyne
With Father’s Day just around the corner, children in nurseries and schools around the globe will be lovingly making cards and gifts to let their dad’s know just how special they are. Wonderful as these glued and crafted creations are, as adults we all know that you can’t beat the warm glow that you get from spending quality family time together. This got me thinking about Father’s Day a few years ago when my husband, two children and I took a trip to the beach. “It’s like being a child again” said a granddad to me. Three generations of a family (women and all) had gathered by an inland boating lake, with their model boats proudly lined up in a row. The men cradled, cleaned and caressed their boats, an ocean liner, tug boat, yacht and speedboat, before lining them up, side by side on the verdant grass, waiting for their turn on the water. The women had come prepared with chairs, flasks, sandwiches and lots of patience and good humour. Although they feigned boredom they were clearly almost as hooked as the men, enjoying the playful camaraderie of the occasion. It being nearly lunchtime, my children sat on a grassy bank, sandwich in hand, captivated as they watched the spectacle unfolded. As each vessel was carefully lifted onto the lapping water the suspense (of whether it would sink) was palpable as each child (and adult) perhaps imagined himself the captain of a ship, travelling to some distant shore. With concentration interspersed with laughter and frivolity, the men proceeded to take it in turns ‘sailing’ their boats. It was in one such bout of laughter, creased over like a child with the ’full-bodied’ experience, that
the granddad of the family explained to me how playing with toys made him feel. You could see it in his wide grin and eyes glinting with playfulness. The huge flashy speedboat (one of his son’s) had just had to be rescued by a tug (another son’s) in a dramatic manoeuvre, which clearly had tickled the father as well as the heckling women onlookers. Meanwhile my then five and eight year old (not to mention their Dad) sat watching mesmerised, drifting in distant shores judging by their glazed expressions. From doodling to sailing grown-up toy boats, even adults enjoy playing. Sat watching the adults and my children that day, it was difficult to tell the children and adults’ responses apart. It could so easily have been a game of conkers in the playground, the children carefully lining up their proud finds before making a selection and preparing for the ‘battle’. Play is all about the process and on that sunny day by the sea the process of play was apparent, as was the satisfaction, excitement and allure of distant shores. Whatever your plans this Father’s Day, make sure you make time for Dad’s to play. Sue is a published author, trainer, educational consultant and therapeutic play practitioner. Turning a Walk into a Workout! As we move towards summer, it’s good to know that those wanting to improve or maintain their fitness can do so in the beautiful surroundings of the Forest with no need to visit a gym! Nordic Walking is the fastest growing fitness activity in the world with over 10 million enthusiasts now regularly taking part in what was originally used by super fit cross country skiers as a way to stay fit during the summer. “What makes it so appealing is that it’s suitable for all ages and fitness levels, is simple to learn and really sociable” says Suzanne Madden, a local Nordic Walking Instructor. “By using the specially designed poles, you use all the major muscles in the body and burn up to twice as many calories as ordinary walking but without any extra effort!” she adds. “The fact that we allow well behaved dogs on our walks is a special selling point – they seem to enjoy it more than their owners!” The poles also reduce the pressure on the knees and joints and the gentle upper body movement is great for easing back and neck pain too which is why local medical experts recommend it. Those that have tried it all agree that being outdoors is energising and that they feel fantastic afterwards!

The Adventures of Nellie
The Hampshire Publications Camper Van Nellie loves this time of year…the time of Shows! We have so many different types of exhibitions, festivals and fairs that we really are very spoiled. From the Great Dorset Steam Fair and the Dorset Show in September, the Bournemouth Air Festival in August and the wonderful New Forest Show in July, to name but a few. Well this one was totally up Nellie’s street… The Wheels Festival in Bournemouth! Nellie was rather excited to be going out. She had had ‘bronchitis’ and had been suffering for weeks, making a rather loud growling sound as she spluttered along. We were waiting for her new part to arrive all the way from Japan, so if anyone heard her, and to be honest she would have given the Formula One Racers a run for their money with all the noise she was making… we do apologise! So now with a new tube and a revived Nellie, off we went to the Wheels Festival. It was “Mayhem” in Zone 3! What a truck that was. This was a chance to have a ride on a huge truck, be thrown around and bounce up and down on the sand at speed. What fun.
Moving along to zone 2 there were Monster Trucks. OMG as the youngsters would say. Big Pete is massive. Nellie looks decidedly slim, yes slim, next to this beast of a machine. In fact Big Pete Ltd is the UK’s No1 most successful Monster Truck Team and has the ONLY female monster truck driver in Europe! Nellie was very impressed with her. You can check out their website at www.bigpete.org. Big Pete and Grim Reaper pulled a car apart in a tug of war, as if it was made of paper! They also climbed over a hill of sand, with two very squashed cars on top, as if kicking a plastic bottle out of the way. Easy. We also learned that ONE

23 23 new tyre costs £3000 and an extra £750 for the wheel, so we are rather pleased that Nellie doesn’t need shoes quite so big or expensive! Then, further along the populated promenade, well… oh… was Nellie’s dream. A red Lotus Esprit. Oh how she would love to look like a red Lotus Esprit. I am sure when she looks in the mirror, instead of seeing huge thighs and a big grin, she sees sleek, smooth, elegant lines. Probable much like I see Claudia Schiffer in the early 1990’s! Or is that Steve? Anyway… gorgeous, glistening and glamorous cars lined the street looking into the sunshine. Mmmmm…
Nellie dreams in the mirror...
Walking back up to the top, to the Overcliff were the famous Formula One Racers. Now if Nellie raced along at that speed (if only she could…) I am sure she would have been severely reprimanded - if they could have caught her of course! Today was a special day and the Overcliff had become an exhilarating race track. I do hope there
was noone staying in one of the hotels, hoping for a quiet romantic weekend, as they would have been rudely disappointed. The noise was amazing. The roars and the revving, incredibly powerful engines were invigorating. What a sight and sound. These cars are something else and driving one, so close to the ground at that speed, and let’s face it, this was probably slow in comparison to what they can do, must be a total trip. Incredible. There were lots of other events on different days at different times. Bournemouth was alive with go-go-go, roaring machines, yells of excitement, family and fun. Well done Bournemouth! Nellie had great fun and is definitely looking forward to more Shows. Where will Nellie go next…? By Debbie Corney

East Boldre WWI event deemed a success! There was traffic gridlock throughout the village, it was almost impossible to move around the photographic exhibition and an estimated two thousand people witnessed the remarkable aerial dogfight staged by The Great War Display Team. Such was the success of the final day of the World War I commemorative events in the tiny village of East Boldre. “Attendances throughout the weekend far exceeded our expectations,” said Mike Husband, Chairman of the Village Hall organising committee. “Over seven days people flooded to the various events linked to the arrival of the Royal Flying Corps in East Boldre in 1915. We are deeply indebted to the Heritage Lottery Fund and our other sponsors, to all those who assisted with the planning, the army of volunteers who helped during the week and those who attended in such great numbers.” The centenary celebrations had the perfect start, a dramatisation “From Forest Field to Western Front” playing to full houses over three nights and receiving considerable acclaim. The East Boldre Village Hall was also full to capacity when the Hon. Ralph Montagu officially opened the four-day Spring Bank Holiday programme of events and New Forest East MP, Dr Julian Lewis, received a very generous reception for his talk on ‘The Politics of the First World War’. On Saturday the opening of the exhibition of unique and previously unseen photographs of life at the Royal Flying Corps Training Station in East Boldre during World War I drew surprisingly large crowds and Steve Antczak’s tours of the historic airfield site received ever growing support, around 150 people joining his final two mile guided walk on Bank Holiday Monday.
Sunday’s Service of Remembrance, conducted by retired RAF Chaplain, Canon Ray Hubble, was held in a packed St Paul’s Church in the village and, following the laying of Poppy crosses on the graves of 19 RFC pilots who died in training in East Boldre, a Royal British Legion Standard Bearer led a solemn parade to the Village Hall where a wreath was laid at the memorial to the dead of two World Wars. Following a performance by an RAF brass quintet, Flight Lt. Peter Towill of 84 Squadron RAF, the only remaining squadron formed in East Boldre during World War I, played a leading part in the dedication and unveiling of the Badge of 84 Squadron RAF which now hangs in the village hall. The aerial appearance of the Great War Display Team drew the largest crowds of the weekend and as replica Sopwith Triplanes, British SE5a’s and Junkers and Fokker aircraft wheeled and dived above East Boldre’s Bagshot Moor it became clear that the entire celebration of the Royal Flying Corps Training Station that stood in the village during the First World War had been a total success!

Want to live the good life? Try living in a green life world!
The Great Pacific Rubbish Patch There is a floating island of plastic rubbish, twice the size of Texas, caught in a current gyro between USA and Hawaii. The area is filled with plastic but doesn’t show up on satellite. While predicted in the mid 80s it was discovered in 1999 by Charles J Moore who sailed into it by mistake as he was returning from a yacht race. This problem is not unique to the Pacific. There are a few oceanic garbage patches throughout the world, including one on our doorstep in the North Atlantic. In a recent National Geographic article it was estimated that worldwide there are 5.25 trillion pieces of plastic debris in the ocean. Of that mass, 269,000 tons float on the surface, while some 4 billion plastic microfibers per square kilometre litter the deep sea.
Product of the month
Bio-degradable Bags from £1.99 per pack!
The knock on effect is a catastrophic loss of marine habitat and marine life as well as other wildlife and birds in particular. Small islands, already being swallowed up by the rubbish patches, become uninhabitable and an increasing amount of rubbish is being swept up on our coastlines. Furthermore, it means changes in tidal and wave patterns the impact of which we may not understand for 100s of years. And if we do nothing... who knows where it stops. We have a responsibility to stop this. We caused it! So always remember the 4 ‘R’s - Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Recover. And we can reduce the amount of plastic floating around in the world by choosing biodegradable options whenever we can. So check out our website and decide to live in a “green life” world. Traditional plastic bags take between 100 and 400 years to degrade and even then small particles will likely linger in the environment for 1000s of years. Our bags degrade fully within 12 to 18 months. We stock a full range of bags from large refuse sacks for rubbish and wheelie bins to smaller nappy sacks and dog waste bags. We also carry freezer bags (medium and large) and food waste caddy bags (in 3 sizes) which are even compostable!
