Well, we have had an exciting month with three baby kittens new to the family. For those who have already experienced this you will know how lovely it is to watch the mother care for the little ones. Lydia, the Mum is quite the part and was very proud to show me her new family the very morning she had them. It has been a joy to watch her. Soon we will have them all running around and that will be when the fun starts! I may have a few stories then. If you have a story to tell, do let me know and I can publish it for you, to give us all a smile. The Lyndhurst Directory this month has a vineyard selling excellent wine, catering facilities, MOT facilities, property services, accountants, gardeners and many many other trades people, all wanting to help you. Please use their services and always mention The Lyndhurst Directory when calling any of them. Now is a good time to get the house really sorted out before the Christmas rush. (Doesn’t time fly!). The Lyndhurst Directory has been in circulation for six editions over twelve months now. If there is anything you would like to see added to it, please send me an email or a letter. I would love to hear from you. Do fill in the wordsearch on page 35 and I hope you all have a great month of October! Very Best Wishes,

Local landscape shines through in national photography competition 'Take a view', The Landscape Photographer of the year exhibition opens at Moors Valley Country Park, near Ringwood, on 9th October. Featuring around 100 winning and commended images, selected from thousands of entries, the exhibition represents the very best landscape photography in the UK. Incredibly, despite the huge geographic area covered by the exhibition, nearly 7% of these winning and commended images depict the glorious scenery found across Dorset and Hampshire. From Swanage Bay to Kingston Lacy, Corfe Castle to Kimmeridge and Rockford Common to Marshwood Vale the photographs all attest to the beauty of the local countryside, whilst in many instances also revealing a new perspective on an iconic image. Six local photographers received commendations this year, with Mark Bauer also taking the National Park prize for his shot of Summer Mist on Rockford Common in the New Forest. Two of his images of Swanage Pier also received commendations. “This competition is the one that all landscape photographers want to do well in so naturally I was delighted to receive three commendations”, said Mark. “Dorset is an amazingly photogenic county with a truly unique landscape. With its World Heritage coastline and wonderful inland features it has become a bit of a mecca for landscape photographers. I am incredibly lucky to have it all right on my doorstep”. 'Take a view', the Landscape Photographer of the Year competition, is the brainchild of Charlie Waite, internationally acclaimed landscape photographer and another Dorset resident. His pivotal role in regenerating interest in landscape photography includes the creation of this prestigious competition with a total prize fund of over £20,000, an exhibition

TLD October 2010 page 4

at the National Theatre and publication of a full-colour book of the best entries. “We are delighted that so many of this year’s photographs depict local scenes and can now be viewed here in Dorset by people who know and love the area,” said Katie Davies, Countryside Interpretation Ranger at Moors Valley Country Park and Forest. “All the images are extremely powerful, highlighting the wonderful diversity of the landscape across the UK. It’s impossible not to be impressed by them regardless of whether you enjoy photography or understand the techniques required to capture images of this quality. It’s even more impressive that we have such excellent local photographers right on our doorstep able to so graphically point out the beauty that surrounds us here on a day-to-day basis.” The exhibition is in the Visitor Centre at Moors Valley Country Park and Forest from 9th October – 28th November 2010. It can be seen between 9:00am and 4:30pm daily and entrance is free although car parking charges do apply within the Park. For more information call 01425 470721 or visit www.moors-valley.co.uk

The Maritime Art Group Celebrates Successful Exhibition The Maritime Art Group is delighted to announce that they enjoyed one of their most successful exhibitions at The Master Builder’s House Hotel in Bucklers Hard during the month of August. There was great deal of interest from both the residents and visitors to the Hotel with the last painting snapped up as the group was packing up on the last day! In all twenty three pictures were sold for a total of over £3000. Perhaps it is not surprising considering that the Hotel is located overlooking the Beaulieu River and its marina, and many visitors come here to soak up the history of the area where Nelson’s ships were built. The Maritime Art Group is based in the south east of England. They were formed in

TLD October 2010 page 8

2005 by a group of lay members of the Royal Society of Marine Artists, who enjoy painting and exhibiting their work as a separate group. They are now 18 strong and include several established professionals, some engaged in tutoring, demonstrating and writing, as well as painting. Brian Aldrich, the chairman of the group commented, "The Maritime Art Group were grateful for the hospitality offered by The Master Builder’s Hotel to all their members, some of whom enjoyed wining, dining, and overnight stays at the hotel." New Forest Association Completes Campsite Survey The Verderers commissioned the New Forest Association (NFA) to provide a detailed survey of all the campsites on Crown Land in the New Forest, to create a true ‘base line’ of exactly what is on each individual site. Since the introduction of campsites on these lands by the Forestry Commission, confusion and disagreement has at times arisen regarding the infrastructure and oth er ph ysical objects within th e campsites, which are now operated under the name of Forest Holidays. The survey results will hopefully ensure that such issues do not arise again. This survey has now been completed. It is a scientific report containing data showing the distribution of all the mapped features contained within the campsites. These include trees, tree canopies, campsite infrastructure down to the last dragons tooth and ground cover or lack thereof. For ease of use a printed summary of the main information and maps have been produced which illustrate some of the data contained in the survey. A copy can b e found on th e N FA web site at www.newforestassociation.org. The survey itself is a strictly factual document, produced for the Verderers as requested, and does not represent the thoughts of the NFA as to the suitability or otherwise of having campsites on the open Forest. The Association does however hope that it might re-ignite discussion on this point.

TLD October 2010 page 10

Following a formal presentation, the NFA commended this work to the Verderers Court and ask that they work to establish the agreement of all interested parties that it is a totally accurate representation of the campsites as they are now, in order that it may be used as an agreed reference against which any future q u eries or d evelop ments may b e considered. The survey was carried out with the help, financial and in kind, of the New Forest Verderers, Forestry Commission, Forest Holidays, Natural England, New Forest National Park Authority and the New Forest Trust, and the NFA would like to express their thanks for their help in this. Wedding Day

by Shelma Vaughan

Today is the day I’ve planned for all my life - my wedding day. Mum and my four bridesmaids, dressed in lilac silk, have gone to church in the vintage Silver Ghost, which will be returning for me soon. Dad is pacing the patio. He is so nervous about his speech that he can’t sit still. I wonder how he’ll cope during the service. I can hear church bells ringing and think of Joel. We met on a blind date. I nearly didn’t go. I hate that sort of thing; all false chit-chat and wondering how soon you can leave. But it wasn’t like that with him. As soon as I gazed into his eyes I was in love. I know it sounds corny, but that’s how it was. Now, in quarter of an hour I’ll be walking down the aisle to become his wife. A knock at the front door heralds the return of the Rolls. Dad swings round mid-pace and sets off the answer it. The phone rings. ‘Can you get that love?’ he calls as he charges down the hall. ‘Hello?’ ‘Ellie?’ I freeze. A girl doesn’t expect to get a phone call from her fiancee at this stage in the proceedings. ‘Joel, what’s wrong?’ ‘I need to speak to you.’ ‘Can’t it wait until after the wedding?’ I hear him take a deep breath and feel a stab of panic. ‘That’s just it, Ellie, I can’t go through with it.’ My heart starts hammering. A pesky robin trills happily outside the window. I need to sit down, and grope for the nearest chair. ‘Ellie, are you still there?’ ‘What did you say?’ I ask through gritted teeth. ‘Ells, I’m not sure getting married is the right thing to do. I’m sorry darling.’ ‘It’s just nerves,’ I say feeling vaguely sick. ‘No Ellie, I’ve felt like this for ages.’ ‘And you choose to tell me now? You couldn’t have mentioned it before?’ I feel murderous and if that robin doesn’t shut up I’m going to wring it’s neck. Joel continued. ‘There never seemed to be the opportunity to talk.’ ‘So you decided to wait till our wedding day?’ ‘I couldn’t leave it any longer, could I? I don’t want to hurt you, Ellie, but…take care.’ Joel hangs up and I stare at the phone in shock. ‘Ellie, the car’s here,’ dad says as he enters the room. I try to focus on his face to understand what he’s saying, but I can’t. He strides across the room, drops down on his knees and puts his arm around me. ‘Ellie, what’s happened love?’ A hiccupping sob bursts out of me then a torrent of tears. Dad strokes my hair and kisses the top of my head. When the storm settles to shuddering breaths, I tell dad what has happened. ‘Now everyone’s at the church waiting and there’s not going to be a wedding,’ I wail. ‘Leave that to me,’ says dad. ‘You go and wash your face then make a cup of tea; we both need one.’

19 I drag myself to the bathroom, then to the kitchen. It’s better than doing nothing; I feel so numb it hurts. Time crawls by. Mum and the bridesmaids return. They help me take off my gown and veil. I curl up on the bed and nurse my pain. ***** ‘For goodness sake, Ellis, it’s been six months now. You need to sort out your stuff, sell the house and move on.’ Mum sounds exasperated. ‘I know, I’ll go round this afternoon and make a start. ‘Do you want any help?’ I shake my head, shuddering inwardly. It’s going to be traumatic enough emptying what should have been my marital home without mum trying to jolly me along. She looks relieved. ‘If you change your mind…’ We both know I won’t. I stand on the doorstep summoning up the courage to put my key in the lock. I haven’t heard from Joel since our almost wedding day, but preparing to sell the house we own together makes it all feel so final. Taking a deep breath I insert the key and open the door ‘I wondered if you were ever going to come in.’ I gaze at Joel, my mouth open. He looks tired and thin. ‘What are you doing here?’ Joel shuffles his feet. ‘Come into the kitchen. I’ll make a cup of tea and we’ll talk.’ Bemused, I close the door and follow him. There’s something surreal about watching him moving around our home. A feeling of desolation wells up inside me. ‘I’ve been living here,’ says Joel handing me my drink. ‘Why?’ He cradles his mug in his hands and gazes at it. ‘It reminds me of you.’ I stare at him, opening and shutting my mouth like a fish, bereft of speech. ‘I’ve missed you Ellie.’ ‘It was your decision.’ ‘I didn’t think I was ready for the commitment, but…I was wrong.’ ‘When did you come to that conclusion?’ I growl as six months’ anguish pulsates in my chest. He licks his lips. ‘When I realised how empty my life is when you’re not in it. I love you Ellie.’ His eyes are boring into me. I will not cry I tell myself and burst into tears. He comes to my side and slips his arms around me. I pound his chest with my fists. He captures my hands and kisses them. I lean on his chest and soak his t-shirt. Once I’ve calmed down we talk for hours and a glimmer of hope is born. ***** Today was my wedding day. It was better than I have ever planned because this time my focus was not on the ceremony, but on our future together.

the most life out of your appliance. Lack of service can result in by-products of the burnt gas building up inside the

appliance, not only causing a safety issue but also gradually reducing the efficiency. Gas is very expensive and a 5% reduction in efficiency will lead to a large increase in

your annual gas bill, costing more than a service and Vital parts can seize due to inactivity during the summer months on boiler appliances. We will also show you how efficient your existing boiler is and can give you advice on measures you can take to reduce your energy bills.

October’s Gardening Tips From Paul Chatfield of Chatfield’s Garden & Property Services Fruit If strawberries were not planted earlier Trees and Shrubs Always give your plants good thoughts!

Planting of evergreens including conifers should be completed early this month. Plus prepare for deciduous trees and shrubs.

Climbers and Wall-Plants Prepare all climbers and wall plants by tying in long shoots and make sure they are secure. Examine all old supports change if needed.

Roses Shrubs, ramblers and climbers need to be firmly secure to prevent them from whipping about in the autumn winds and becoming damaged.

Borders and Beds All the summer bedding plants should be cleared by now. The space left can be planted with cheerful spring wall flowers, polyanthus and garden primroses all available in bright colours.

Bulbs and Corms If ground is in a workable condition finish the planting of lillies early this month. Where drainage is needed plant them on a layer of sharp sand.

there is still time, complete pruning of currants and gooseberries. New plants can be propagated from old wood.

Vegetables A start may be made with digging vacant ground, so it has as long as possible to weather during the winter, ready for raking down next spring.

Greenhouse and Frame An important task this month is removal of dirt and any shading that was painted or sprayed on the glass to give as much light as possible ready for spring.

House Plants As daylight decreases, light through the window is considerably reduced. Light loving plants would need to be moved accordingly. Remember to water less, just keep damp. Rock Gardens and Pools Gather up falling leaves to stop decay. Any other debris remove from pools before they decay and foul the water, which is harmful to plant life and fish.

Lawns Raise height of cut on lawns to no less than 2 inches. This stops the light getting to the ground which encourages moss growth. Patch if haven’t already.

WAGGY TAILS RESCUE, is a registered charity based in Ferndown. They rescue and re-home dogs that have been abandoned, neglected or otherwise in need of a good home.

Pepe Pepe is a Chihuahua and nearly two. He may only be 8” high but he has a giant personality. He likes other dogs but NOT cats and loves to be cuddled. Due to a malignant melanoma, he has had to have one of his back legs r emo ved, but this does no t hinder him at all. He loves life but needs a quiet home with no young children.

FOOD AND TOYS URGENTLY NEEDED As I am sure everyone knows now, the RSPCA no longer take in stray or unwanted dogs. This means Waggy Tails has twice the amount of dogs in its foster homes are we are running out of food. Tinned or dry, chicken or lamb will all be welcome and can be left at any of our three shops (498 Ashley Road, Parkstone, 2c Farm Road, West Moors and 152 Pinehurst Road, West Moors) also at our office at 69 Cobham Road, Ferndown Industrial Estate. Please phone us on 01202 875000 if you have a problem with delivery. We also need lots of toys to keep them happy and occupied, so if your own dogs are bored with their toys, please ‘recycle’ them to us! Very many thanks to you all for your support (and to the lovely editor of this magazine for publishing this!!!)
