Dear Lyndhurst residents! Wow what fantastic weather we have had for this time of year! The beaches were packed...in October! I am sure it will all get a bit cooler now, but I have to say I like the changing seasons, changing the clothes in the wardrobe and curling up by the fire with a good movie. Then having the summer... whenever it happens these days... to look forward to. We have just had a very busy weekend putting the magazines together and in between making an air raid shelter with our 7 year old son for a project at school! The whole class is really enjoying this topic and learning a lot. Hayden was horrified at the prospect of being evacuated and is fascinated with the ‘real story’ of a girl this happened to. “It really happened Mummy!” he exclaimed, “I wouldn’t like that!” I think he appreciates his ’luxury lifestyle’ of DS, Xbox, TV and Wii a little more now! So, back to the house and all that needs to be done… maybe it is time for the plumbing to be checked before the winter months settle in, a new carpet to impress the in-laws, a loft conversion to give you more space or new kitchen doors. Here in The Lyndhurst Directory we have all manner of businesses and tradespeople to help you. They are all local to you so do give them a call. These calls are really appreciated and make all the difference. The lucky winner of the hot air balloon flight is Stuart Holley. Well done to you! This month the prize is a lovely hamper. Good luck with that and have a great month of October! Best Wishes,

Fascinating facts about pylons and pottery Did you know that the New Forest was once the site of a thriving Roman pottery industry? Or that the electricity pylons in the north of the Forest date from the 1930s? These and other fascinating facts featured in a series of ‘walks and talks’ organised by the New Forest Association this summer. NFA Chairman Peter Roberts and National Trust Countryside Manager Phil Marshall led one of the guided walks on September 6th and talked about the history of pylons and the rare wildlife species in the north of the New Forest. Local writer Anne Biffin also led a walk on August 17th on the subject of archaeologist and artist George Heywood Sumner and the New Forest’s Roman pottery sites. Anne Biffin, who has written many articles on Heywood Sumner, took her group around Sloden, Amberwood and Crock Hill, pointing out the various Roman pottery sites described by Heywood Sumner in his book Excavations in New Forest Roman Pottery Sites, published in 1927. The group also saw the seat dedicated to the memory of wildlife photographer and film maker Eric Ashby, who lived in Linwood. In th e second walk Ph il Marshall led the group around Turf Hill and Hale Purlieu and talked about the concentrations of rare and endangered species in Hale Purlieu, a former manorial waste ground which is still grazed by commoners’ stock. He also talked about the National Trust’s management

TLD October 2011 page 6

policy for the 500 acres of dry and wet heath and mires that make up Hale Purlieu, which are home to Dartford warblers, stonechats, curlews and nightjars as well as unusual plant and insect species. Peter Roberts described the history of the power lines and pylons crossing the north of the Forest, which date from the 1930s. If the New Forest had already gained National Park status at that time, the power lines would have been avoided, he said. “The walks and talks were a big success,” said Peter. “There is a great deal to learn about the Forest’s cultural, social and natural history. We are planning more events soon and would encourage as many people as possible to check our website and to come along to them.” The New Forest Association is an independent charity which aims to protect the New Forest and to disseminate information about its culture, history and ecology. Anyone is welcome to joi n . Fu rth e r in for m ati on an d memb ersh ip d etails are availab le at www.newforestassociation.org.

October’s Gardening Tips From Paul Chatfield of Chatfield’s Garden & Property Services Always give your plants good thoughts!

Trees and Shrubs Planting of evergreens including conifers should be completed early this month. Plus prepare for deciduous trees and shrubs.

Climbers and Wall-Plants Prepare all climbers and wall plants by tying in long shoots and make sure they are secure. Examine all old supports change if needed.

Roses Shrubs, ramblers and climbers need to be firmly secure to prevent them from whipping about in the autumn winds and becoming damaged.

Borders and Beds All the summer bedding plants should be cleared by now. The space left can be planted with cheerful spring wall flowers, polyanthus and garden primroses all available in bright colours.

Bulbs and Corms If ground is in a workable condition finish the planting of lilies early this month. Where drainage is needed plant them on a layer of sharp sand.

Rock Gardens and Pools

Fruit If strawberries were not planted earlier there is still time, complete pruning of currants and gooseberries. New plants can be propagated from old wood.

Vegetables A start may be made with digging vacant ground, so it has as long as possible to weather during the winter, ready for raking down next spring.

Greenhouse and Frame An important task this month is removal of dirt and any shading that was painted or sprayed on the glass to give as much light as possible ready for spring.

House Plants As daylight decreases, light through the window is considerably reduced. Light loving plants would need to be moved accordingly. Remember to water less, just keep damp. Chatfield’s Garden & Property Services North 2, Sway Storage & Workshops Barrows Lane, Sway, Lymington Hants, SO41 6DD

Tel: 01590 682828 Mobile: 07821 610923

Gather up falling leaves to stop decay. Any other debris remove from pools before they decay and foul the water, which is harmful to plant life and fish.

Lawns Raise height of cut on lawns to no less than 2 inches. This stops the light getting to the ground which encourages moss growth. Patch if haven’t already.

We dance mainly in the Cotswold and Border traditions, but vary our performances with new dances, some collected at festival workshops and some we devise ourselves. During the coming winter months, we shall be meeting at the Scout Hut in Romsey Road, Copythorne on Tuesday evenings to practise and to learn new dances. Morris dancing is a great social activity so why not join us. New dancers and musicians are always welcome.

Pre-Nuptial Agreements: We won’t try to predict the future but we will try to protect your assets should the unexpected happen. At the time of a divorce or annulment of a marriage, following the recent case of Radmacher v Granatino, a court should now give effect to a pre-nuptial agreement freely entered into by each party, unless it would be unfair to do so. It makes financial sense prior to the marriage ceremony therefore to protect assets that you would wish to retain upon the ending of that marriage. If the marriage is celebrated later in life, or is perhaps the 2nd time around, the likelihood is there are greater assets to protect. We can arrange a convenient appointment to discuss your requirements and draft a tailor made agreement for you that will enable you to celebrate your special day with financial peace of mind.
