Sparkling students hang winning bauble to launch local Christmas Tree competition Two students from the Victoria Education Centre and Sports College (VEC) in Poole, hung a very special decorative bauble on a pine tree in the forest at Moors Valley Country Park, near Ringwood, on 26th November. The bauble is one of 10 being placed locally by the Forestry Commission to launch this year’s Christmas tree sales. Five of these distinctive golden baubles can be found at Moors Valley Country Park and a further five within the New Forest. All bear the distinctive Forestry Commission logo, and any member of the public lucky enough to find one will be entitled to win a Christmas Tree. The Forestry Commission donated a Christmas tree to VEC in 2009 to mark the launch of the Centre’s Sparkle Appeal. The Appeal aims to raise £5 million to provide a new hydrotherapy pool and therapy centre at the school, which specialises in providing care and therapy for pupils aged 3-19 years, affected by a range of physical disabilities. This year the students returned the favour by hanging the first lucky bauble in the forest in return for their Christmas tree which took pride of place at the Sparkle Christmas Fair on 27th November. Libby Burke, Forestry Commission Communications Manager said, “2010 is the 500th anniversary of the first decorated Christmas Tree, and whilst the Latvian merchants chose to decorate with roses back in 1510, we thought our

special Christmas baubles would stand out rather better in the forest environment. We are delighted that Sam 7, and Nick 18, from VEC could launch the competition for us and look forward to meeting the 10 lucky winners.” Christmas Trees are now on sale at Moors Valley Country Park daily from 10 – 4pm until December 19th. Forestry Commission trees are also on sale at New Park, near Brockenhurst. The next Sparkle event is a Carol Service, which takes place at 6pm on December 15th in St Aldhelm’s Church, Branksome. For more information on any of this year’s Christmas events at Moors Valley contact the Rangers on 01425 470721 or visit www.moorswww.moors-valley.co.uk. valley.co.uk For more details on the Sparkle Appeal visit www.sparkleappealdorset.org. www.sparkleappealdorset.org Sam and Nick from Poole’s Victoria Education Centre and Sports College hang the first Forestry Commission bauble watched by helper Vicki Ruehmkorff

Hello Bournemouth! Wow it is December! Surprisingly I am more ready this year than ever before which is very unusual for me. We had a lovely trip up North to visit the family for a Christening and I managed to get all of their presents and leave them up there! I can now concentrate on home and more immediate family. Santa told Hayden to write his list which I have to say I am a little worried about… XBox 360 etc. That is on top of the DSi he was given by Grandma for his Birthday last week. It isn’t how it used to be is it? Maybe you have a story of a past Christmas or New Year’s event? I would love to hear it. I remember when I was young (a couple of years ago…) my Mum told me that her sister really did get a sack of coal one year for being so naughty and threw my Mum’s new pram down the stairs as a result. Well it made sure I was good anyway! With regards to the magazine please use our local trades people to help you this Christmas, whether it is a new bathroom suite, new blinds to brighten up the windows, block paving laid in the driveway, new dentures, a new kitchen worktop or many other things, The People’s Paper Bournemouth local business and trades people can help you. We will also have our very own new website in the New Year which I am very excited about! There is a lovely short story on page 28 as well as a suduko and a prize wordsearch, so sit by the fire with a cup of tea and have a read. Steve, Hayden and myself wish you a really Happy Christmas and a Delightful New Year! All the Very Best,

Debbie and Stephen Corney

Talking about wildlife with

Robins

Adorable in appearance and instantly recognisable by its orange-red breast and plump figure, the robin is a national favourite amongst our domestic birds. Robins are traditionally associated with Christmas, and frequently depicted on Christmas cards and ornaments. Despite their cute looks and friendly demeanour, robins are fiercely territorial with each other and rival species, defending their feeding and nesting areas with ferocity if necessary. The male and female hold separate territories until late December or January, when they pair up to construct their nest. Their songs are identical as well as their looks, with the red breast bordered by grey, and the back and w in g s b e i ng brow n. Th e youngsters are a less c o ns p i c uo u s d u ll b row n colour, without the red, until about 2 or 3 months of age. Robins normally breed twice a year, starting in March, each brood consisting of 4 to 6 pale blue, speckled eggs. Robins enjoy a vastly varied diet of small insects and worms, seeds, berries and fruits. They readily approach humans for food, sometimes even being tame enough to feed from the hand. Robins are widely found year round everywhere in Britain in woodlands, parks and gardens, where their warbling

song can be heard throughout the day as well as night, but the robin in your garden may not be the same one all year round, as some British robins migrate south for winter and others arrive from continental Europe for our milder climate. Dorset Wildlife Trust’s exclusive new range of Christmas cards features a stunning image of a Bournemouth robin by local photographer Steve Maskell. Water company makes a date with 2011 wildlife calendar ONE of Dorset Wildlife Trust’s most passionate supporters is urging people to make a date with the conservation charity’s 2011 calendar. Bournemouth & West Hampshire Water (BWHW) has been a corporate member since 1995 and has consistently championed DWT’s various projects and initiatives. For the last 11 years the water company has also sponsored a month in the charity’s annual calendar. The new 2011 edition features 12 wildlife images in Dorset taken by award-winning photographer Colin Varndell. The images include pictures of some of the county’s most beautiful birds as well as a sleeping dormouse, otter, hare and red squirrel. Apart from sponsoring a month BWHW also buys up copies of the calendar to sell onto staff. Many use them as Christmas gifts to send overseas. Roger Harrington, BWHW’s Managing Director, said buying a copy of the calendar was an excellent way of supporting a worthwhile cause. H e a d d e d : “Organisations such as Dorset Wildlife Trust do a huge amount of good for the environment. “Much of what we do as a water company is

inherently linked with wildlife and the countryside which is why we’re such a keen supporter of the charity.” Nicky Hoar, DWT’s Communications Officer, said: “We are so grateful to BWHW for supporting our work for wildlife over many years and particularly for sponsoring this stunning calendar. “It promises to be a best seller, helping us to protect Dorset’s wildlife at a time when funding cuts could threaten it.” DWT celebrates its 50th anniversary next year and has grown to over 25,000 members and more than 750 active volunteers. It has more than 40 nature reserves, covering 1,300 hectares of wildlife habitat, and five education centres around Dorset. Christmas Cheer Christmas is a time of wonderment To young and old alike A time to renew old friendships And, new ones ,no doubt, strike What do we think makes Christmas ? Carol singers at the door Or turkey and mince pies to eat The Christmas tree and more ? These are indeed some Festive joys But how long do they last The real joys are the ones we need To reflect on from the past And so it is that family and friends Are really what we need When gathered around the Yuletide fire With friendship as our creed So in this time of material things Maybe we should look around And agree to extend our love To those who need it, beyond

Life-changing African mission for students

A TRIP to the slums of Ethiopia has given Bournemouth students a whole new outlook on Christmas. A group of 18 students from Oakmead College of Technology spent a week in one of the world's poorest cities Addis Ababa, working with children with special needs. Each of the 14 to 19-year-olds on the trip raised more than £1,000 to take part via sponsorship and part-time jobs. They also collected 200 teddy bears to hand out to children from the slums. Jade Chapman, 17, said: "Travelling to Africa was never something I'd thought of doing but it was life-changing. “The experience has opened my eyes. We saw such bad things, such poverty and yet amazing kindness and positivity. “Before I went my Christmas list was four pages long - now there's nothing on it. Having seen how other people live, I've

realised I don't need anything.”

Jade now hopes to spend a year working in Ethiopia before university. The youngsters worked with the charity IHA, which helps provide education and employment opportunities and food to people living in the slums of Ethiopia. College Chaplain James Sharp, who led the trip, said: “For some of our students this was their first trip abroad. “One of the things they loved about Ethiopia was the sense of community and family. “We're incredibly proud of the young people who went on the trip - as well as demonstrating a desire to help others; the experience has greatly improved their own lives.” If you're interested in joining next year's trip to Ethiopia or helping the fundraising call the college on 01202 774600.

December’s Gardening Tips

From Paul Chatfield of Chatfield’s Garden & Property Services Fruit In favourable conditions fruit trees can be Trees and Shrubs Always give your plants good thoughts!

Trees and shrubs can still be planted, however be careful with the roots when moving and try not to disturb too much soil, also none frosty conditions.

Climbers and Wall-Plants Planting can still be carried out now good supporting methods should be used. Training and cleaning up of leaves.

Roses Support roses over the winter to save from damage, leaves should be cleared up, healthy ones can be composted and diseased ones burnt.

Borders and Beds Planting and supporting can still be carried out if conditions are not frosty. Protect plants if necessary with a good mulch or straw.

Bulbs and Corms Hand weed or hoe weed seeds to keep down for the spring flowering, during mild spells.

Rock Gardens and Pools

planted, pruning can still be carried out on apple and pears only.

Vegetables Time for your seeds to be ordered before Christmas. Some vegetables in open g ro u n d w o u l d b e n e f it f ro m s om e protection.

Greenhouse and Frame Glass needs washing and disinfectant applied. Insulation should be done. This will obviously cut down costs for working greenhouses.

House Plants Be careful not to water too much, it is easy to make the compost too soggy so the roots would then lack air, ideal temps are from 50-70 degrees Fahrenheit. Chatfield’s Garden & Property Services North 2, Sway Storage & Workshops Barrows Lane, Sway, Lymington Hants, SO41 6DD

Seeds of many alpines cannot germinate successfully unless exposed to a period of freezing or snow, which in their native habitats breaks dormancy.

Lawns If ground is not wet or sticky spiking to improve aeration can be carried out, during mild weather, a sprinkling of sharp sand can be good also.

WAGGY TAILS RESCUE, is a registered charity based in Ferndown. They rescue and re-home dogs that have been abandoned, neglected or otherwise in need of a good home. This Month’s Christmas Cracker is KIP Kip is a very pretty 11-month-old Papillion cross. He lived previously on board a canal barge, so is unused to house and traffic noises, so still quite nervous. He is very active, full of fun and loves people, but is a little wary of other dogs. I know we ask this each year, but it is such an important message that we need to just say it one more time “PLEASE DON’T BUY A PUPPY FOR A CHRISTMAS PRESENT” All rescues get inundated with old dogs being handed in at this time of year to make way for the new puppy! Unbelievable, I know, but it really does happen! Please give buying a dog serious consideration. (Most people spend more time deciding on which TV to buy!) A dog can last for 15 or more years and one year’s food alone will cost about £500! Then there’s vaccinations, vet bills, insurance, worming and flea treatments etc that can amount to £20,000 throughout the dog’s life. So give it some serious thought, and, in the New Year, if you still want to go ahead, why not give a rescue dog a second chance of happiness? For more information phone us on 01202 875000!

“Mattie Chitzmats” - By Glenn A. Hascall My next door neighbour was a prune. I don’t mean any disrespect, but she really looked like a four-and-ahalf foot prune. I don’t have a picture of her but the two closest descriptions of her I can give is either a prune or ET’s grandmother. I really am not trying to be disrespectful! I remember her in the fondest of terms. We called her Granny. If she went by any other name I never knew it or have long since forgotten it. She kept mostly to herself and would often be seen with a walking stick in hand carrying her wrinkled body through neighbourhood alleys. Her granddaughter (in her 70’s) spoke a little English and told us that Granny had come from Mexico in her late 70’s after her husband passed away and had stopped celebrating her birthday at 97 (which had been some years before I knew her). Most people stayed away from Granny. Not only was she very old, but she didn’t speak English and wore a variety of tattered clothes. This grandmother several times

over helped raise several generations of younguns’. There would come a time when Granny would find herself alone. And when she was, my mother would make a little extra at suppertime and my sister I would take it over to Granny’s house. Granny would never come to the door although she might occasionally pull back a curtain and peer through the window at us, her eyes partially hidden by the flowing wrinkles on her face. So we learned to leave the meal on her doorstep and knock. Once we were a safe distance away we would see her hand reach outside the door and the plate and its contents would disappear inside. The next morning we would hear a knock on our front door, by the time we got there Granny was gone, but she left behind a clean plate with a stack of homemade tortillas still warm from the pan. Soon it became a neighbourly ritual; we would supply her supper and she made sure we were never without fresh tortillas. Granny would never let us actually thank her or even talk to her, but she

understood what my family was doing and she appreciated it and even without words she let us know of her gratitude. One Christmas, after we had read Luke, chapter two, opened presents and were enjoying the holiday, I heard the doorbell ring. I didn’t suspect Granny because she always knocked. When I reached the front door I had to look down and I saw a short, toothless, wrinkled lady grinning from ear to ear. She held out a plate of Christmas Tamales and said, “Mattie Chitzmats”. I was so startled to hear Granny speak that her very broken English words didn’t register right away. By the time I realized that she had personally wished my family a Merry Christmas she was backing away, waving and grinning. This beautiful, wonderful, toothless prune of a granny had shared Christmas cheer with my family. As I recall those were the only two words I ever heard Granny say, but her life spoke volumes. And in that moment of Christmas cheer I came to realize the arrival of our Saviour Jesus Christ continues to leave a lasting impression on

regular people. He didn’t come just for those of us who speak English. He didn’t come just for those who attend church in their very best clothing. He didn’t come just for those who had a particular colour of skin. He didn’t even come just for those who were wrinkle-free. He came for me. He came for you. And He came for Granny. A smooth skinned baby and a wrinkled old woman. This, my friends, is the story of a Christmas past and the best Christmas present. Mattie Chitzmats to all and to all – Jesus Christ. By Glenn A.
