Angels Help Keep People Safe in Boscombe A team of volunteers offered support to vulnerable people in Boscombe over the weekend last November. And during the summer they contributed to a 21 per cent drop in the number of reported incidents of anti-social behaviour. The Boscombe Angels are volunteers from the Churches Together in Boscombe group and they have given up their time at weekends to help make communities safer. Seventeen members of the team were out in Boscombe over the weekend at the end of November, where they supported members of the public by talking to and listening to them, helping them into taxis, picking up drinks bottles from the pavement and providing a reassuring presence in the town. The Boscombe Angels worked on a pilot scheme to engage with the community in Southbourne between June and August last year. This led to positive feedback from residents and contributed to a 21 per cent reduction in the number of calls to Dorset Police about anti-social behaviour compared to the previous year.
that it’s something we should be doing, because for us, it’s the face of the church in the community. It means that we’re not just seen as being behind our church door; we’re actually out communicating with the community. We’re finding out what their problems and needs are and, hopefully, when we’re out we’re able to help them.” A similar scheme in Halifax has led to a significant reduction in reports of violent and sexual crime since it was set up in 2005. The Boscombe Angels provide reassurance and guidance to anyone in need, and can, in some instances, administer first aid. The Boscombe Angels will be patrolling Boscombe on a number of Friday and Saturday nights in the future. To find out more email: boscombeangels@gmail.com To find out more about your local Safer Neighbourhood Team call Dorset Police on 01202 222222 or 01305 222222, or visit www.dorset.police.uk
Sergeant Guy Nicholas, of the East Cliff, Springbourne and Boscombe West Safer Neighbourhood Team, said: “From our point of view it’s great because they’re getting involved in their community and taking a bit of pride in Boscombe. It makes life so much easier for us all whilst helping to forge safer communities.” Neil Houlton, one of the Boscombe Angels, said: “We feel

Dear Neighbours, A Very Happy New Year to You! We had a great Christmas with my Mum and Dad who, despite the snow made it all the way from Hull to stay with us. Hayden pleaded with Grandma to drive down here which really did help her make the decision to set off. All was fine with a “good run” as my Dad would say. Hayden was very good and woke up at his usual 8am Christmas morning so we were all able to enjoy the day and not sleep through it! Father Christmas was very generous and we were all delighted with our gifts. I hope you had an equally successful and joyful time. I do hear that some have had the ‘dreaded bug’. Hopefully not too many! Steve and I had a quiet New Year with a candle lit dinner for two which is most unusual I have to say. So, now is the time to put those New Year’s resolutions into practice and really make 2011 one of the best ever! Don’t forget if you need anything doing in or around the home we have all the local trades people here to help you. Keeping business local will support our local economy hugely. It keeps the money flowing in our area! If you have a ‘thank you’ to send to one of our advertisers please let me know and I will print it for you. We love to see those. Steve and I wish you All the Very Best for 2011!

The Onset of Winter The Autumn hues have left the trees As Winters chill winds blow But Winter has a surprise in store As from the clouds comes snow The biting winds that oftimes give A feeling of despair Do have a purpose at this time As leaves form layer on layer With the gentle fall of snowflakes Forming a blanket on the ground So nature protects its life cycle With warmth for life underground Wildlife is no stranger to hard times; Some gather food and hibernate They save their strength ‘till another day And, for the present, wait And so we learn from Natures lesson That we should keep warm Not only in a physical way But in friendships, free from harm Winter makes us ever aware Of potential times of hardship So we should strive to see the good In life, and be forever positive

Talking about wildlife with
Spectacular Starlings Gregarious and widespread, starlings are one of the most common British garden birds. Smaller than blackbirds, their plumage is glossy with iridescent green and purple in the summer, turning darker in the winter, with white speckles. On the ground, they walk with a curious waddle, but their flight is fast and direct, aided by the pointed, triangular wings. The female and the male are almost indistinguishable. Starlings are omnivorous, happy to eat almost anything from a variety of fruits, seeds and insects to worms and kitchen scraps. Assisted by the female, the male builds the grass nest in a cavity of a tree, wall or a building. Normally one brood is produced in April or May, consisting on average of four to seven glossy, pale blue eggs. The fledglings leave the nest at three weeks of age. Autumn sees the arrival of hundreds of thousands of migrants from Scandinavia and Eastern Europe, here to overwinter in large communal flocks consisting of thousands of birds. Returning to their roosts at dusk, starlings provide a spectacular sight in the sky by performing complex aerial acrobatics, known as murmurations. The reason for this behaviour has mystified biologists for centuries, but it is generally believed that by flocking together in this manner, they aim to protect themselves from predators such as hawks and peregrine falcons. Despite their widespread presence in Britain, starling numbers have declined in recent times by about 70 per cent
and they are now a Red List species of conservation concern. Look out for roosting flocks over reed beds, for example on the edge of Poole Harbour, but other plants will do as a substitute. Last winter a flock roosted in a large clump of bamboo in Corfe Mullen, which was subsequently cut down. If you are lucky enough to have starlings roosting on or near your land, enjoy one of nature’s spectacles while it lasts as the birds will disperse in the spring. News from the National Trust I hope this finds you full of the joys of a New Year and fully rested after time spent with family and friends over the festive season. January is, of course, the time to make New Year’s resolutions. So if you’ve set yourself the challenge of meeting new people, learning something new or getting out and about more then we may well be able to help. Starting in February we’re launching a new beach clean volunteer group. Based at the Studland Discovery Centre, the 'Studland Tidy Group’ will be a hit squad keeping our coastline clear of debris washed up by the tide or left by careless visitors. It offers a great opportunity to get out and about along our stunning coastline whilst meeting new people. Alongside the practical activity there will be the opportunity to learn about Purbeck’s wildlife and countryside as each task will have a discovery theme. The route the activity will follow will be suitable for everyone so why not bring the family along? (Under 18s will need to be accompanied by an adult.) So come and find out what a Pandora Shell is whilst untangling discarded fishing line or learn to tell the difference between Crossleaved and Bell Heather whilst extracting a wind blown plastic bag from the spines of a gorse bush. Starting in February we’ll meet 10.30 on the third Sunday of every month at the Discovery Centre at Knoll Beach and we’ll be back there at 12.30. Below are the dates and themes for the first four sessions:
Sunday 20th February: Explore the Shore, Sunday 20th March: Changing Coastlines, Sunday 17th April: Spring Flowers and Sunday 15th May: Shorebirds. We are also launching our very own youth group this month which will build on our previous work with local schools and colleges by providing an opportunity for young people to develop their skills in and understanding of practical countryside work. Hopefully those of you between 14 and 18 years old who have already expressed an interest in these activity days have already signed up for the first session but if not do get in touch. The group only has 11 places so its first come first served! For more information or to register your interest on either of these opportunities get in touch with Rachel Rodman on 01929 477320 or email rachel.rodman@nationaltrust.org.uk. Grandma’s storytelling on target for £1k hospice donation A grandmother from Lymington is on target to raise £1000 for Naomi House children’s hospice through telling stories and nursery rhymes. Wend Lewis, who lives in Keyhaven, has created a CD of stories and poems based around traditional nursery rhymes, called Grandma’s Tricks. So far she has raised £750 for Naomi House and she’s hoping that further sales of the CD will help her reach her £1000 target. Wend got the idea for the project from telling stories to her grandchildren, Maia, 6, Darcey, 3, and Skye, 3. She worked on the CD for two years, narrating and adapting the stories herself and adding some fun and humour to old favourites such as Jack and the Beanstalk, Humpty Dumpty and The Three Little Piggies. Grandma’s Tricks was launched at a fundraising party at Milford Church Hall in March this year. Local musician and retired solicitor Nick Filbee helped with the project by providing the m u s i c a l accompaniment and Karin Karian of Vocal Solutions assisted with the production. “My mother was a fantastic storyteller a n d I l o v e st ory t el l i n g t oo,” said Wend, a keen singer and m usic lover.
“I wanted to leave a legacy for my grandchildren. They will be able to hear my voice on the CD for many years to come. I hope that many other children will enjoy it too and will get as much out of it as we have done. “I love traditional tales and stories and I think it’s important to pass these traditions on to future generations, so that both modern and traditional stories have a place in their lives.” Grandma’s Tricks is being sold for £10 a copy, with all proceeds going to Naomi House. To find out more about Grandma’s Tricks or to buy a copy, email: wm.lewis@virgin.net or call 07876 626703.

January’s Gardening Tips From Paul Chatfield of Chatfield’s Garden & Property Services Happy New Year! Fruit Pruning and spraying are the main Trees and Shrubs Trees and shrubs can still be planted, however be careful with the roots when moving and try not to disturb too much soil, also none frosty conditions.
Climbers and Wall-Plants In severe weather conditions some protection may be needed, cut back over crowding shoots and renew ties if necessary.
Roses Support roses over the winter to save from damage, leaves should be cleared up, healthy ones can be composted and diseased ones burnt.
Borders and Beds Preparation of beds should be done now for planting, if conditions are good. Annual weeds can be buried beneath the surface, perennial weeds dug out & burnt.
Bulbs and Corms As the earliest bulbs come to the surface, the soil may benefit from a light fork over. This is to break any hard capped soil to let air in.
operations to be carried out now, this must be completed as soon as possible, weather permitting.
Vegetables Most important is to complete digging on vacant ground. Find out what manures etc. are needed for different crops.
Greenhouse and Frame Some propagation work can be done from cuttings as the varieties become available. Some tuberous varieties can be started in moist peat.
House Plants Flowering ones need all the light possible, keep them out of drafts. Don’t over water while growth is slow.

Rock Gardens and Pools There is very little to be done except clearing and cleaning away of fallen leaves and debris which may spoil flowers & water purity.
Lawns Although it is advisable to stay off the lawns some work can be done during mild spells. Raking over worm casts and raking out moss, also remove last leaves.

Local group Caring Canines receives Queen’s Award Caring Canines is a wholly voluntary group promoting canine awareness and its value in the community. It is well documented that contact with a dog helps to lower blood pressure, promotes communication, raises people’s self esteem and generally has a therapeutic effect. Some people who will not or cannot respond to another human being will try to sit up, smile and speak to a dog — the smile makes it all worthwhile. In August 2006, the co-founders of Caring Canines, Sue Dennett and Julie Lankshear realised their dream of linking gentle and friendly dogs with people in the community. Committed to working with people of all ages and abilities, Caring Canines dogs are “Happiness” dogs. Volunteer members visit dedicated venues on a regular basis and systems are in place to support both members and venues ensuring that all claims made about the work of the group are always accurate. At the time of writing it is estimated that Caring Canines makes over 1,200 people contacts per week. In 2002, in celebration of Her Majesty’s Golden Jubilee, the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Award for Voluntary Service by Groups in the Community was established. It’s purpose is to recognise groups of individuals who are giving of their time freely for the benefit of others. It is the hi gh est ho no ur t hat can be bestowed upon groups of this kind and is equivalent in status to the MBE. As such, the Queen’s Award not only serves to provide recognition of volunteer groups
but also demonstrates the high respect in which volunteering is held. On Tuesday 17th August 2010, the Lord Lieutenant of Dorset, Mrs Anthony PittRivers presented the award to the group and a ceremony held at Holdenhurst Village Hall. As well as providing voluntary help to individuals or groups through their main services, Caring Canines have also launched a number of programmes for children to help better educate them about dogs, “Be Dogwise”, and help improve their literacy, “Be Bookwise”. The group also have a display/demonstration team, Cavorting Canines, which promotes the Be Dogwise programme at community events. For more information about membership and the activities of Caring Canines, please contact Sue Dennett or Julie Lankshear on 01202 579744 or by email at caringcanines@btinternet.com. WAGGY TAILS RESCUE, is a registered charity based in Ferndown. They rescue and re-home dogs that have been abandoned, neglected or otherwise in need of a good home. Special Sam Sam is about 5 years old but has had little input so needs an experienced collie owner. He needs lots of exercise and stimulation, as he likes to be with someone doing something. He would make a good companion for someone who works outside and/or likes to walk. He has not been socialised much so far so a home of his own would be better for him. He is very affectionate but big and bouncy so no young children.
IF YOU WANT TO SUPPORT WAGGY TAILS AND CAN’T AFFORD TO DONATE… GIVE YOUR TIME INSTEAD! If you have a few hours to spare – come and join a very friendly team and have lots of fun at the same time as doing something worthwhile. We particularly need help in our three shops, (Parkstone and West Moors) so retail experience and outgoing personality would be appreciated. Lots of different jobs (unpaid) available, so phone us on 01202 875000 and tell us what you are good at!
