Hello Bournemouth! Welcome to the November edition of The People’s Paper Bournemouth! I hope you all had a great summer. I have to say for me it passed extremely quickly. Hayden had a fabulous time at Grandma’s going on boat trips, helping in the garden, visiting friends. It is all back to school now and a whole new year ahead. With that in mind do you need some extra help in the house, clearing the garden, fitting a new kitchen...? There are many jobs which seem never ending, but with some expert help, it is all so much easier. As always we have many local trades people here in The People’s Paper too. Many have been with us since 2008 when the first Paper was published! Steve and I value the support you give to them, it certainly makes our job very worth while and satisfying. Please continue to use our local businesses. There are also some local events coming up with a Princess Ida showing at The Regent's Centre in Christchurch, a Handbag and Gladrags Charity Auction and the Hospice 10K Run. All are listed in the index. Please do attend where you can. If you have a business and want to be promoted, have a story to tell or an event to publicise, please let us know! Steve, Hayden and myself wish you a great September. Best Wishes,

Debbie and Stephen Corney

1500 Local People Can’t Be Wrong Moors Valley Country Park near Ringwood has succeeded in getting over 1500 people involved in exercise in just 18 months. Set up in June 2009, Activate 1000 aims to encourage people to undertake 30 minutes or more of moderate exercise at least 3 days a week, in order to maintain a healthy lifestyle. The programme is now half way through its three year funding, which is primarily provided by Sport England. It currently offers over 15 different and exciting outdoor activities, which take place at Moors Valley Country Park, Colehill, Ferndown, Verwood, Wimborne and West Moors. One of the activities run by Activate 1000 is an innovative Buggy Fitness Walk. These weekly fitness walks offer both parent and child the opportunity to get some fresh air and exercise in the beautiful countryside. As well as a walk around the Park, the sessions also include some more strenuous exercises such as short runs, stomach exercises and leg lunges. Gemma and her nine month old son regularly go on the Buggy Fitness

Walks. Gemma said, ‘My family don’t live close to me so these walks are really convenient as you don’t have to find alternative child care.’ Karl Prince, Healthy Lifestyle Ranger at Moors Valley Country Park, explained that back in 2007 a new activity was set up – Health Walks. ‘These walks took off really quickly and were hugely popular,’ said Karl. ‘We quickly realised that there was a niche in the market for activities like this and set out to raise funding to create and develop our own programme.’ The scheme now offers activities for everyone regardless of age or ability. Activate 1000 has so far exceeded expectations and there are high hopes for the future. Karl said, ‘We hope to expand the activities that are already available to make them accessible for even more people.’ Anyone interested in becoming involved in Activate 1000 can email activate1000@eastdorset.gov.uk or call the Moors Valley Rangers on 01425 470721. Big-hearted Yellows staff clown around for charity THERE was plenty of clowning around in a good cause when staff at Yellow Buses held their annual mufti day in aid of Breast Cancer Care. One driver, Carl Potter, turned up for work dressed as a clown while others donned cowboy hats, wigs and even a rock ‘n roll suit. Head office staff at the Dorset bus company also entered into the spirit with the engineering team wearing pink overalls. Others chose to combine the company’s annual ‘Pink Day’ with Halloween by wearing festive costum e including witches hats and Devil outfits.

“I never cease to be amazed at the lengths our staff go to and this year was no exception,” said Jenni Wilkinson, Yellow Buses’ Head of Marketing. She added: “This year’s Pink Day was the eighth we’ve held and, judging by the feedback from passengers and staff, was the best one yet.” Yellow Buses added pink ribbons to its 120-strong fleet in the run-up to the day on Friday October 29. Last year’s event raised £930 for Breast Cancer Care and organisers were hoping to raise a similar amount this year. Dressed for the occasion: Head office staff at Yellow Buses take part in the company’s annual mufti day

Jurassic Jaunt: Swanage East Route 1 Area: Distance: Difficulty: Access Restrictions?

Swanage 2½ miles Medium No

A 2½ mile walk with 2 short strenuous sections but this walk is well worth the effort with great views of Swanage and Poole Harbour. How to get there: Grid Reference 022809; On approaching Corfe Castle from Wareham, turn left for Studland just after the National Trust car park. After 3 ½ miles, just before Purbeck Golf Club, take the right turn, signposted Swanage 2 ½ miles. At the next junction, turn right for Swanage and park in the lay-bye with the large stone plinth saying ‘Welcome to Swanage’. Information:- Toilets are not available here. Walk details:On the left, near the start of the lay-bye, take the small swing gate. Fork right here and take the steep 100 metre ascent to the level path. Turn right and continue along the path for 400 metres. Cross the stile taking you into the National trust Ballard Down area and continue ahead, giving you excellent views across Swanage to your right. Avoid any forks to your left and after another 400 metres, ensure you drop down through a small tree arch to meet another path (here you will have a gate to your right to Swanage). Turn left here and ascend towards the Ridgeway of Ballard Down (250 metres). You have seats available at regular intervals for resting and taking in the views across Swanage and the bay.

As the path levels off at the top, turn sharp left and walk up to t he top of the Ridgeway. At the Ridgeway you will get a panoramic view of Poole Harbour as well as Swanage to your left. You now need to turn left and head along the Ridgeway towards the masts in the distance. Follow the path through the gate and drop down, past the Obelisk and follow the path down to the road. Cross the road carefully and turn left, walking down the grass verge for about 300 metres. For the following 300 metres, you will need to walk on the right-hand side of the road until you meet the road junction on your right. Cross the road into the small open area (signpost here for the Coast path 1 ¾ miles), go over the stile, and after about 20 metres, follow the footpath sign to your right. Continue along the path for 400 metres, through the gate, and about 30 metres after the gate, fork right and follow the path down to the lay-by. Please look at the site for future walks www.jurassicjaunts.co.uk or call 07790 474 478 for more details.

November’s Gardening Tips From Paul Chatfield of Chatfield’s Garden & Property Services Fruit In favourable conditions fruit trees can be Trees and Shrubs Always give your plants good thoughts!

November is the best time to plant deciduous trees and shrubs, however be careful with the roots when moving and try not to disturb too much soil.

Climbers and Wall-Plants Many hardy ones such as clematis, jasmine, honeysuckle, Virginia creeper and many other decorative vines may also be planted now. Good planting & supporting methods should be used.

Roses The pruning of most garden roses in the usual bush and standard forms can be carried out now. This is to support the rose over the winter to save from damage.

Borders and Beds The end of the flowering season for herbaceous perennials is a good time to have an end of season clean up.

Bulbs and Corms Tulips and hyacinths if not planted last month can still be done while the ground is still workable, if wet add sharp sand for drainage.

planted, pruning can be started on apple and pears, but cherries, plums and peaches should be left until spring.

Vegetables Make sure gardens are cleared of old growth and get soil conditioned for next year’s crops by enriching it correctly for certain plants.

Greenhouse and Frame Glass needs washing and disinfectant applied. Chrysanthemums should be cut back hard after flowering to produce suckers for use as cuttings.

House Plants To avoid spindly growth give plants plenty of light. On cold nights remove from window ledges. Cyclamen and bulbs should not lack water. Chatfield’s Garden & Property Services North 2, Sway Storage & Workshops Barrows Lane, Sway, Lymington Hants, SO41 6DD

Rock Gardens and Pools Fallen leaves should be prevented from falling into pools and ponds. Also remove them from the rock gardens. Fork and sprinkle sharp sand over surface to prevent fungal attack.

Lawns If planning to produce new lawns from seed, digging should be completed now to allow winter frosts to condition the soil for next spring.

WAGGY TAILS RESCUE, is a registered charity based in Ferndown. They rescue and re-home dogs that have been abandoned, neglected or otherwise in need of a good home. Our Autumn Orphan this month is ROSCOE Roscoe is a very pretty 3 year old Border Collie who was, believe it or not, ABANDONDED by his owners. They left him in kennels when they went on holiday and never returned, so eventually the kennels gave him to Waggy Tails! He has a lovely nature and is well behaved. He has had lots of training and ‘sits’ and gives his paw on command. He will need a mature home, where he can be given lots of physical and mental stimulation. He will then make a superb companion. With Christmas just around the corner, we’d like to help with shopping dilemmas! For the second year running we have produced our own Christmas Cards featuring our rescue dogs, and they are on sale in all our shops. Then, for presents, why not make a donation on behalf of your friend/relative, and they will receive a festive thankyou…or you could sponsor a dog on their behalf (see www.waggytails.org.uk for more info). AND don’t forget to visit our Christmas Fair at the Barrington Centre, Penny’s Walk, Ferndown on Saturday 20th November from 9.30am to noon. Free entry and lots of fabulous prizes to win, plus gifts for 2 and 4 legged friends.

Phone our office on 01202 875000 to find out more!
