Angels Help Keep People Safe in Boscombe A team of volunteers offered support to vulnerable people in Boscombe over the weekend last November. And during the summer they contributed to a 21 per cent drop in the number of reported incidents of anti-social behaviour. The Boscombe Angels are volunteers from the Churches Together in Boscombe group and they have given up their time at weekends to help make communities safer. Seventeen members of the team were out in Boscombe over the weekend at the end of November, where they supported members of the public by talking to and listening to them, helping them into taxis, picking up drinks bottles from the pavement and providing a reassuring presence in the town. The Boscombe Angels worked on a pilot scheme to engage with the community in Southbourne between June and August last year. This led to positive feedback from residents and contributed to a 21 per cent reduction in the number of calls to Dorset Police about anti-social behaviour compared to the previous year.

that it’s something we should be doing, because for us, it’s the face of the church in the community. It means that we’re not just seen as being behind our church door; we’re actually out communicating with the community. We’re finding out what their problems and needs are and, hopefully, when we’re out we’re able to help them.” A similar scheme in Halifax has led to a significant reduction in reports of violent and sexual crime since it was set up in 2005. The Boscombe Angels provide reassurance and guidance to anyone in need, and can, in some instances, administer first aid. The Boscombe Angels will be patrolling Boscombe on a number of Friday and Saturday nights in the future. To find out more email: boscombeangels@gmail.com To find out more about your local Safer Neighbourhood Team call Dorset Police on 01202 222222 or 01305 222222, or visit www.dorset.police.uk

Sergeant Guy Nicholas, of the East Cliff, Springbourne and Boscombe West Safer Neighbourhood Team, said: “From our point of view it’s great because they’re getting involved in their community and taking a bit of pride in Boscombe. It makes life so much easier for us all whilst helping to forge safer communities.” Neil Houlton, one of the Boscombe Angels, said: “We feel

Maths excellence adds up to a first MATHS teaching and learning at a Bournemouth secondary has seen it recognised with a national quality mark the first school in the south. Avonbourne Business and Enterprise College is only the third school nationally to receive the Improvement & Excellence in Mathematics Award. The Harewood Avenue school was also chosen to pilot the new quality mark for national release and education bosses at the local authority were asked to help design it. Not all schools taking part in the pilot across the country went on to be successful and reach the high standards needed. The award measures excellence and innovation in both teaching the subject, the way students learn it as a result, and the tools used to share this good practice with other schools and partners.

management of maths teaching in the school.” Sue Nicholson, national director of the quality mark programme, said: “We were extremely impressed with Avonbourne and also their enthusiasm in helping to develop the final version which is now being rolled out across the country.” The quality mark is a government initiative, overseen by the National Centre for Excellence in Teaching Maths. Avonbourne’s accreditation will last until 2013, when the school will be reassessed.

Maths excellence adds up to a first 1 & 2 - Pupils at Avonbourne School celebrate their groundbreaking mathematical success

All nine maths teachers at Avonbourne and the learning experiences of the entire school population of 1069 girls were assessed. Howard Curtis, Avonbourne’s head of maths, said: “We’re exceptionally thrilled to have gained this award, not least because so few schools in the country have achieved it to date. “It represents the culmination of a lot of hard work by my staff who have enabled our GCSE results to increase significantly in the last few years. “It reflects the hard work put in by our students and it highlights good practice in not just teaching and learning but also in

Talking about wildlife with

Frogs & Toads Frogs and toads are our most common amphibians, widely found throughout Britain. They bear a close physical resemblance, but can be distinguished by several features. Frogs have a smooth, moist skin and long legs designed for leaps and jumps, whereas toads have a drier, “warty” skin and shorter legs, crawling being their preferred way of moving about. Frogs are more varied in colour, ranging from shades of green and brown to grey and yellow, whilst toads are generally dark brown. Providing the weather is warm enough, frogs and toads emerge from their wintering quarters as early as January to breed in ponds. Male frogs make sure they are the first to arrive and emit a low purring croak to attract a mate. Frogs lay their eggs in clumps, covered in protective jelly-like substance, whereas toads’ eggs are laid out in long strings.

The females lay thousands of eggs, but only a few survive to adulthood as spawn and tadpoles are extremely vulnerable. Tadpoles develop in stages in a process known as metamorphosis, and emerge as adults after a few months. Those that survive can live for up to eight years in the wild. The toads’ survival odds are slightly better due to toxins produced by the glands in their skin, making them unpalatable to some predators. Both frogs and toads feed on insects, slugs and worms, caught with their long tongues. Frogs, who can breathe through their skin, spend the majority of their lives in or near water, whereas toads are more terrestrial. February’s Gardening Tips From Paul Chatfield of Chatfield’s Garden & Property Services Trees and Shrubs There is still time to plant trees and shrubs if the task has not been already completed. Making sure the holes are dug big enough and deep enough for the root ball, also taking in consideration to use a good tree and shrub compost. Climbers and Wall-Plants Species and cultivars of Clematis that flower Summer & Autumn on new shoots made in the current season will benefit from a hard prune now. Roses The main pruning of bush and standard Roses should be carried out between the middle of the month and late March. Borders and Beds During mild spells weeds will start to grow. Deal with them as soon as they appear as they will be easier to remove. Bulbs and Corms Dahlia tubers in store for the Winter should be inspected to make sure that they are healthy and plump. Any bad patches should be cut away with a clean and sharp knife and dipped in Sulphur. Rock Gardens and Pools All leaves should have been removed by now. Mild spells may bring weeds & slugs, remove weeds while small and treat the slugs with slug bait (with suitable containers sunken in the ground, beer is a good tip.)

Fruit There is still time for both planting and pruning but try to complete task before new growth starts. Vegetables Seed potatoes should be removed from their bags and set to sprout in trays or shallow boxes (shed or greenhouse). Greenhouse and Frame Greenhouse should have been sterilized. Carnations and Chrysanthemums can be propagated from cuttings 55-60f (13-15c). Give free ventilation except on cold nights. House Plants Plants at home, particularly flowering on es n eed lots of ligh t an d free ventilation not stuck between blinds or curtains kept out of drafts and be careful not to over water, just damp. Always check how your plant looks. Chatfield’s Garden & Property Services North 2, Sway Storage & Workshops Barrows Lane, Sway, Lymington Hants, SO41 6DD Tel: 01590 682828 Mobile: 07821 610923

Lawns There is still time to lay turf for a new lawn or to repair an old one. Not a good tip to lay in muddy or icy conditions.

WAGGY TAILS RESCUE, is a registered charity based in Ferndown. They rescue and re-home dogs that have been abandoned, neglected or otherwise in need of a good home.

Could I be your valentine? My name is Draco and I am a v er y hands om e Rot tw ei ler / Doberman cross, about 18 months old. I wouldn’t be here at all if Waggy Tails Rescue hadn’t sent a van up to the Pound I was in and collected me and some of my friends. We were all about to be put to sleep on Christmas Eve! But now we all have a second chance and, although they have brought me to a lovely foster home - I would really like someone special to love. I love people, but am not so keen on other dogs (and don’t mention the C. A. T word!). As you can see, I am a big, strong boy so need a big home with a large garden, or better still, some land which I could guard for you when I am not charging around! I have been well looked after (my previous owners neutered me and I am also microchipped) and, despite my size, I do love to be cuddled. Could I cuddle you please? For more information on Draco and his friends, please phone 01202 875000!
