Cllr. Phil North Leader of the Test Valley Borough Council

I completely understand the impact rising inflationary pressures and the significant increase in energy prices are having on hard-pressed residents. The recent statements by the Governor of the Bank of England and the Chief Executive of the energy regulator Ofgem offer a sobering analysis of worse to come this winter, primarily caused by Russia’s attempted invasion of Ukraine. And although it’s down to national government to offer more assistance to those that need it most, I’ve been concentrating on what we can do Thelocally.borough council already provides a broad range of support to individuals and families - including £815k to the Citizens Advice Bureau over the next three years to provide advice on benefits, debt reduction and other practical support; the work our housing service does to get people into accommodation and support them to stay there; paying out the £150 energy rebate payments; administering food vouchers as part of the Household Support Fund; providing council tax and housing benefit support; helping to develop the networks of local groups who often work with people most in need in communities; and internally, we have moved all of our lowestpaid workers onto a higher pay band. Although we don’t have infinite resources, there are ways we can do more. This is why I recently organised a special meeting of the Test Valley Partnership focused solely on the cost of living. In the spirit of crossparty working - and in recognition of the scale of the issue - I invited the Leader of the Opposition to help me host the session. The meeting provided a platform for partner organisations to discuss what we are all already doing, identify any gaps and determine what else we can do to assist. Whether that be signposting, other practical support or perhaps even some one-off targeted assistance to relevant Weorganisations.arecurrently working up an action plan to help people further but one of the first things we have done is create a page on Test Valley Borough Council’s website where we have brought together in one location all the help that is currently available. Whether that be advice on benefits, making sure people who are eligible are claiming everything they are entitled to, links to local help and advice on conversations to have with your energy company. If you don’t follow me already, please check out my Facebook page - www.fb.com/ cllrphilnorth – where I will post more regular updates on the help and support we’re providing.

“I have found it really interesting to see my perspective and my perception change, and I love Williams, that.” a two-time Olympic gold medallist, admits that the dichotomy between her professional and her personal life is one that is hard for some to fathom, but then again, isn’t it always tricky to define living icons. “Whatever I believe in I fight for, and I will do it again and again until it’s right. My daughter brought out a new form of expression in me, and that was really important. It was a really humble experience; but also one that made me want to reach out and express this new me.

“I just always come back to that phrase, ‘you are a long time retired’, and that really speaks volumes for who I am and the love I have for this sport,” she begins. “Of course, on occasions I have grown tired of it, and certainly I value my downtime away from the court more than ever before; but if the idea of taking my racket out there, of competing, of giving it my all, still excites me, then why would I possibly want to do anything else?” Indeed, Williams’ ambitions on the court have evolved almost as much as the athlete herself. While the subject of retirement for Serena Williams is always one on the lips of interviewers, it is to the 40-year-old’s unending credit that she perseveres on in a sport that has given her so much, all of which she has paid back many times over. From recurrent injuries, mental health worries, the exhaustion of over two decades on the circuit, the distractions of media work, and the small matter of a young child waiting for her at home, no-one would begrudge the Florida-born star – the greatest female tennis player to have ever lived – the decision to start a new career.

The council thoroughly plans green space management to enable sustainable, long-term investment to maximise the way spaces are used and enjoyed. By working with local communities to plan facilities to meet the needs of local people, TVBC helps to ensure ecology and the conservation of the natural environment.

Test Valley Borough Council is proud to announce yet another year of Green Flag awards for War Memorial Park, Rooksbury Mill Local Nature Reserve and Valley Park Woodlands. This coveted award has now been consistently presented to all three parks for more than a decade, recognising the quality and value that these well-managed spaces bring to the community.

next generation of homebuilders, and in that I’m talking about things like high-performing concretes, and cements that have a lot of recycled material in them… like blast furnace slag and pulverised fly ash. It’s also about building with recycled stone and locally sourced wood materials, and investing in craftsmanship rather than mass-market ways of producing what we need.

When we source materials this way, we tend to value the relationship we have with them that bit more, so we are e ectively redrawing the circle in a way that ensures we invest more in what we

Designer, writer and television presenter, Kevin McCloud leapt into our consciousness with his vastly successful Grand Designs show on Channel 4. This month, the a able architectural business owner talks sustainability.about Sustainability in design is obviously a hot topic, yet it comes from a place where the reality is the housing stock in this country is actually pretty poorly constructed, and when that happens it means we are immediately on the backfoot as far as sustainability and carbon footprint goes. This comes about because of that classic play-o between the environment and the wallet – they have never been good bedfellows and never will be, so we kind of get what we expect out of the Whatequation.that means is that while our homes are typically not as sustainable or environmentally friendly as they might be, we compensate for that fact by trying to wrestle back a bit of positive contribution through our own daily lifestyle habits.

I’mhave.really looking forward to a new wave of sustainability that goes right from the root, because as much as how we behave as people a ects the environment, the way our homes are built in the first place determines so many of our actions, and the extent we need to go to in order to a ect the same change.

In simple terms, that means all of us can turn the thermostat down, or look towards secondary glazing windows, or put more insulation in the attic. All of us can recycle more, can waste less, can grow our own vegetables, walk more, invest in electric technology, or simply just explore the idea of sharing more with our neighbours. All of these things reduce collective carbon and environmental footprint, but most also share the idea of community and a common goal, and I think that’s just as Ofimportant.course,

2. Water Wastage Showers, toilets, baths and bathroom sinks are collectively responsible for more than twothirds of a household’s average water meaningusage, that any reduction we can make in water usage will have a hugely positive impact on the Thereenvironment.aresimple measures we can all take such as showering rather than bathing, and beyond that changing an old showerhead for a low-flow version with high pressure. Also ensure leaky taps are fixed and are certainly not left running for any amount of time unnecessarily – a tap left on can let through six litres of water in under a minute. That means small things such as turning the tap off when brushing your teeth or washing your face can offer a huge benefit in terms of saving water. And of course, whilst helping the environment you’re also reducing your water bill.

3. Letting life flourish While the bathroom perhaps isn’t the most obvious place to begin inviting in the flora and fauna of the outside world, the moisturehumidity, and flow of air actually makes it a great place for lowmaintenance plants such as ferns to Meanwhile, thrive.adding in airpurifying plants such as spider plants, peace lilies, aloe vera and snake plants will actively improve the purity of the air in your bathroom. A biproduct of this is a decrease in mould, meaning less need for harmful cleaning products and chemicals. 4. Limescale lag Limescale is something we commonly associate with poor performance in kettles and washing machines, and that’s correct. Yet, by extension, when our appliances require more energy, over a longer period, to perform the same function, both we and the environment are paying for the privilege.

1. Plastic is not fantastic We all know the issue with single-use plastics, and the damage they do to the environment. The prevalence of refillable and reusable body products – soaps, gels, moisturisers etc. – and the number of retailers wising up to this trend, has kicked off a cultural shift that is rapidly gathering pace. Not only is this tendency for refillable products a trendy revolution, even if it is akin to wartime replenishment of products, but typically those products on offer have been developed with sensitive skin or vegan elements in mind, meaning they are better not just for the environment, but ourselves too.

You need to get it right and wills can be challenged for a number of reasons.

If you and your partner have children from previous relationships you can use your will to ensure that you make proper provision for all your loved ones.

Potential problems with DIY wills

A DIY will may save you a few pounds but could leave an expensive mess behind for your loved ones after your death.

If its contents are not clear it could cause a dispute about the meaning of the will. It may be that it was drafted in such a way that there are people that you did not intend to benefit who can make a claim against your estate. This could lead to expensive legal arguments involving lots of different people who have an interest. You can use your will to minimise the impact on your estate of inheritance tax. You may also be able to protect your share of your house against being used for your surviving partner’s care home fees following your death.

The effects of a poorly drafted will can last many years as family disagreements can ensue with potentially no reconciliation. It is very important if you make a will that is drafted properly and that you have taken advice from a solicitor, in addition your solicitor can also advise you at the time about Inheritance tax planning, power of attorney and planning for tomorrow. This is intended for general guidance only. In all cases specific advice should be sought.

If the will have has not been properly signed and witnessed it is invalid. If it is invalid you have no will and the law will dictate what happens to your estate. This may not result in what you wanted to happen to your assets and could lease to people getting a lot more or less than you wanted.

The cost to your estate of a legal challenge could run to many thousands of pounds, leaving little or nothing to your family after legal costs have been paid. There is no substitute for proper advice to ensure that your estate ends up where you want it to go and that it does not end up in someone else’s hands.

There’s so much attention at the moment on the cost of petrol, the cost of our utilities, the rise in inflation, and it all seems like bad news. Yet sometimes we are all guilty of obsessing over the negative elements whilst failing to recognise good opportunities elsewhere; and if you’re looking for one sector where costs, pretty much consistently over time, have always decreased, then reach into your pocket and take out your trusty mobile phone. Telecommunications, broadband and connected industries continue to slash prices in what is a consumerled price war, and the simple truth is many of us are still paying too much for our mobile

Money on my mind...the Martin Lewis column phone contracts. So if you’re coughing more than about a tenner a month for your mobile phone contract – and by that I mean calls, texts and data, not the device itself –you’re probably in line to save some money. It all comes down to looking for the best-priced SIM for your needs, because once you find the right deal, it’s really very easy nowadays to grab your PAC code and switch networks. Now usually when I suggest switching to a different mobile provider, people come back with concern over signal strength for, say, Lebara Mobile or PlusNet or whoever it is offering the best deal on data. The reality though is that the communications network is run by four companies and four companies only – O2, EE, Vodafone and Three. Every other provider is piggybacking off their signal, so, in effect, it’s the same signal. So by selecting one of the smaller companies all you’re doing is going with a virtual network, and everything else should remain the same. Obviously check before you sign up to see if 5G or tethering conditions are available, but beyond those things it’s the same line. It’s strange that mobile phones are such an integral part of our lives, yet many of us take for granted the competitiveness of the industry and don’t realise where we can be making savings.Inanera of prices rising inexplicably across the board in other elements of our life, the time is now to start working the equation back in our favour, so have a look at your bill, survey the competition and start the conversation! He’s the UK’s leading money saving expert - a journalist and presenter who has kept millions of pounds in people’s pockets as well as lifting the lid on the threats and dangers we need to be aware of as consumers.

In this month’s column, Martin Lewis looks at how, in a time of rising costs, we can make savings in other places.

The Adventures of Daichi The Modern Magazines Camper Van Daichi loves the sea. That is why we all moved to Weymouth at the end of last year, to be as close to the beach as possible. And what a summer it has been. Glorious sunshine, glistening blue, turquoise waters, golden sand and lots of happy faces. Of course, boat trips are a must and with plenty of choice, Weymouth harbour is a delight to sail from. I may have mentioned that my Mum has dementia. It is a horrible disease that is for sure. Never predictable and always a challenge. My Dad, at age 87 still drives all the way from Hull to visit us and I absolutely take my hat off to him for persisting through the same questions on and on as he cruises down the motorway. Music works well and the sixties songs with The Supremes, Neil Diamond, Buddy Holly, Dusty Springfield and even the Rolling Stones are a blessing no one would ever realise. Singing to her hearts content, all smiles, the long journey is possible… albeit ear plugs are recommended! Dad, having been a fisherman all his life, loves the water. That is where I get my passion from, I am sure. My sister and I try and give him as much time as possible for his ultimate pleasure, pond fishing for carp, but boat trips to sea are also one of his delights. Hayden, our son of now nearly nineteen, used to go on the Yorkshire Belle with them, in Bridlington, when he visited in the summer some moons ago. So, off to sea we went. We chose a smaller, leisurely boat called Josephine so that Mum would not be alarmed. It was just gorgeous. Bobbing along on the calm waters, literally watching the world go by, looking back at the busy Esplanade with people milling around, fair rides spinning, children playing, I All aboard! Smiles all round... Nothe Fort from the water To advertise in this magazine, call 01264 31649928

have to say I just love it. Passing Nothe Fort, on the right, our coastal defence which was built between 1860 and 1872 by 26 Company of the Royal Engineers to protect Portland and Weymouth Harbours, makes you feel quite small sat in a tiny blue boat. It was due to this construction that Portland became an important Royal Navy base. The fort is certainly worth a visit but do be ready for the gun shots on each hour or they can be quite a shock! I nearly finished up on the top of Portland (spiritually) when I first heard it! With a prison there, I am not sure that was prosurvival… So, back on the boat, all was well. We continued across the bay towards Portland Harbour. I was amazed at the buildings jutting right out to sea. I believe they were all part of the defence which was put in place. They are pretty derelict now and would need quite some upgrade, but I am sure they would make some very unusual houses. The problem with me is that I am always looking for a project to do… it drives Stephen mad! One day I will retire… but it could be some time. We pootled into Portland Bay where there were huge cargo ships and a naval ship, but then to our utter delight two dolphins jumped out of the water in synchronised dancing. How wonderful! Back and forth they frolicked, entertaining us with lots of ooh, aahs and happy sounds. Family times are all about making memories, and although Mum will not remember, as she was ‘not there’ and will adamantly assert that, we knew she had a good time and loved every minute. So did we. Sailing back, to our astonishment there was a seal bathing on a rock, looking at us in a rather bored way while flapping its tail quietly against the stone. What an incredible day and all here in the UK. I do enjoy a trip abroad, but there are such sights, delights and moments to be enjoyed right here. Dad really wants to go reef fishing. It is on his ‘bucket’ list and with trips available here in Weymouth, I wonder if Daichi can make this go right for us all? I wonder? Let’s see in the next issue of your Local Magazine. Have a great month of September. By Debbie Corney Dolphins in Portland harbour Can spot the seal?

While studies in humans are still in very early stages, lab and animal studies have shown promising effects of curcumin in the fight against cancer, by interfering with several important molecular pathways involved in cancer development, growth and spread. While many of these studies are in their early stages, one thing is for sure: you no longer need to feel guilty about your weekly Indian takeaway.

It’s tasty, has been around for centuries and is a key ingredient in Britain’s favourite dish – chicken tikka masala –but it’s only recently that the full benefits of turmeric have come to the fore. This gorgeously golden spice gives curry its orange tinge and has long been used in India as a medicinal herb. This is all down to compounds found within the spice, the most important of which is curcumin, which has powerful antiinflammatory effects and is a very strong antioxidant. It can also be used as a lively, peppery essence in things like juices, foods and stocks. Dried turmeric, meanwhile, which is much less potent, adds colour and enhanced earthiness to preparations such as roasts, rice and scrambled eggs. Supplement that! Of course, turmeric doesn’t have to be used in its raw form of food preparation; it can also be taken as a supplement. Terminology Turmeric is a plant and it’s the roots of the plant that are used to make the spice that is used in cooking and herbal drinks. Curcumin is the naturally occurring compound within the plant’s roots that give it it’s bright yellow colour and is known as a carotenoid

Welcome to the September Stargazing Page. Highlights this month include the return of the gas giants to our evening skies, and a rare opportunity to see the planet Uranus disappear briefly behind the Moon.

The ISS can be spotted early in the morning until the 11th; it then moves to our evening skies from the 15th until month end. To establish exact timings please refer to www.heavens-above.com or a similar webpage for up-to-date information, remembering to set the location to your observing area.

The Autumn Equinox on 23rd September marks when daylight hours equal the number of night-time hours, wherever you are on Earth. The term equinox originates from the Latin meaning ‘equal night’. The Autumn equinox marks the point at which nights start to become longer than days.

Mercury The innermost planet cannot be seen this month. Venus Venus is visible just before sunrise in the east, but is lost in the Sun’s glare towards the end of the month. It will reappear in our evening skies in December. Mars Mars can be seen late in the evening, rising around 10pm. It is currently located in the constellation of Taurus the Bull, and is close to the Hyades and Pleiades star clusters (see figure).

Jupiter & Saturn

Both gas giants are visible from 9pm in our south-eastern skies as the Sun sets, with dazzling Jupiter lower to the east (left) of less-bright Saturn. An almost-full moon appears between them on the 9th. Moon September’s full moon occurs on the 10th. It is close to Saturn on the 8th, Jupiter on the 10th, and Mars on the 16th.

Did you know...? A very rare event occurs in the UK for the first time since 1953 this month, when the Moon moves in front of (occults) the planet Uranus. Although not a naked-eye planet, Uranus can easily be spotted in binoculars, and you can use these to watch as it disappears behind the lit side of the Moon on the 14th around 10.15pm depending on your location. It will then reappear out from behind the dark limb of the Moon around an hour or so later. If the evening is cloudy then there is a second chance to see the same thing happen on the 5th December late in the afternoon! 11.30pm from the 20th SeptemberNE E Capella Pleiades star AldebaranredclusterHyadesclusterstarandgiantMars Occultation of Uranus by the Moon: September 14th ~10.15pm - 11.30pm Please mention Modern Magazines when contacting advertisers 35

Feline lower urinary tract disease (FLUTD) is a term used to describe conditions that can affect either the bladder or urethra (tube from the bladder to the outside) of cats. It is thought to affect around 1-3% of cats each year, so is one of the more common reasons for them being taken to the Commonvets.signs cats may show include:

31649942

• Blood in the urine. • Urinating in strange places in the house.

Vets Column: Feline Urinary Disease

• Difficulty urinating (straining) or painful urination • Increased frequency of urination, often producing small amounts and visiting the litter tray frequently.

• Over-grooming due to pain and irritation. If your cat is straining to urinate and not producing urine and is distressed or unwell you should contact your vet immediately. We see this condition more commonly in cats that are young to middle-aged, neutered, overweight, mostly stay indoors, and who are fed predominantly on a dry diet, however any cat can be at risk. There are many different causes of FLUTD, but by far the most common cause accounting for around 60-70% of cases is Idiopathic cystitis. Idiopathic cystitis is essentially inflammation of the bladder without a known cause. In order to reach a diagnosis your vet may need to perform some tests such as looking at a urine sample or performing x-rays or an Forultrasound.mostcats it can be addressed by making some simple changes to their environment. Increasing water intake is very important to reduce the risk of this condition. Cats are incredibly efficient at absorbing water from their food, which is why many owners don’t really seem to see their cats drinking very much. Changing to a wet diet can increase water intake. Drinking water is also important, but cats can be incredibly fussy about how it is presented to them! Ceramic water bowls are often favoured over metallic, and also wide and shallow bowls so their whiskers aren’t repeatedly brushing on the sides. To cater to those who prefer a running water source you could invest in a cat water fountain, which provides water as a constant stream. For some cats, living with other pets can be stressful, but they are good at hiding their true feelings and recurrent cystitis may be the only clue. Stress is now thought to be a big factor in many cases of idiopathic cystitis. If you have more than one cat in the house, it is important that each cat has its own food and water bowl, plus at least one extra bowl spare around the house. This also goes for litter trays, one per cat plus one extra is the recommendation and they should be placed in quiet locations away from the hustle and bustle of the home. That way there is less competition for important resources, helping with harmonious feline living, after all we wouldn’t like to all eat off the same plate and use a dirty bathroom! Pheromone products are available which have shown to be very useful for helping cats feel relaxed in their environment. Feliway is a synthetic cat appeasing pheromone, available as a plug-in diffuser. The natural pheromone and this synthetic version have shown to help create a happy cat environment. Happy cats = happy and healthy bladders!

Nigel MarmaladeSlater’sTart the dough well into the corners and trim the edges. Scatter the ground almonds over the base of the tart, then spoon in the marmalade and gently smooth the surface. 4. Roll out the reserved pastry into a disc roughly the size of the tart, then cut into 2cm wide strips. Brush lightly with a little beaten egg, then place the strips one at a time on to the surface of the tart in a lattice pattern. 5. Bake for 30 minutes until the pastry is pale biscuit-coloured and the marmalade is bubbling. Let the tart cool before easing from the tin and slicing. Top Tip Leave the tart to cool and the filling to fully set before attempting to cut into slices.
