Wareham Beerex 2011 This Easter, Wareham Round Table hope to run their best Beer Festival (Beerex) yet. Over the years the format has developed into an excellent event, with an excellent choice of real ales and ciders, which in recent years, thanks to the growing popularity of ciders and perrys has become an interesting alternative for people who haven’t found their taste in real ales yet. The event has grown over the last 17 years from its humble beginnings in the Corn Market, to its current venue at the Masonic Lodge in Howards Lane, Wareham. There will be at least 25 real ales from all across the country with a wide selection of ciders & perry. Held over Easter holidays, the festival now covers 3 days – from the opening night of Thursday 21st April through to Saturday 23rd April. Beerex is Wareham Round Table’s main fundraising event of the year and we help support that by offering the opportunity to local businesses to sponsor various aspects of the Beerex. If you are interested in helping support the Beerex, please contact us! Over the last year or so, we’ve helped Sandford Cubs, Wareham Hospital & The League Of Friends, Stoborough First School and Wareham in Bloom to name a few. We always welcome approaches from people or organisations that need support in the Purbeck area. This year, we are especially lucky that it’s the weekend of St George’s day and will be celebrating in style with St. George
as our central theme. We have entertainment on all three nights and on Saturday lunchtime as well. T i c k e t s c a n b e b ou g h t o n l in e a t www.beerex.org.uk or from our kind supporters, Bullock & Lees in North Street (Wareham). Tickets cost £5 per session. Wareham Round Table is open for membership to men aged 18-45. It’s not political, it’s not religious, it’s about having fun, doing something good and enjoying yourself! Round Table is an international organisation and exists in over 40 countries. It is about networking and getting to know people you might not otherwise meet! If you feel that there’s an aspect of your life that could benefit from finding out more about Round Table, then give us a call. Low-cost tips to transform your garden in time for the spring... Is your garden looking very muddy or untidy or perhaps you’re looking for a more maintenance-free area to relax in when the weather improves? Local stone merchant Suttles has the answer! With its array of shingle, decorative stone chippings or wood chippings, you can transform your garden from as little as £29 per tonne. Director Joe Paine explains “recycled woodland mulch can be laid on top of your soil in your borders, which not only looks great but also suppresses weeds and deters slugs and snails. Or, if you’re looking to lay down a pathway through your garden or an area to sit out in, all that is required is a roller or plate compactor, a wheelbarrow, a shovel, some geotextile and some gravel or shingle (we have plenty in our range to choose from!). Whilst the ground is being prepared, you can put the excavated material into bags, which Suttles can easily pick up for you. Suttles can also deliver the shingle or other aggregate at the same time to make life a whole lot
easier and save on costs. You’d be surprised what a difference these can make to your garden!” And from now until the 30th April 2011, Suttles are offering 10% off decorative chippings when you order through their online stone depot at www.suttles.co.uk. Just enter the code WHORC10 at the checkout to receive your discount. For further details about the products, prices or delivery, go to the online stone depot at www.suttles.co.uk or call 01929 439444.

Jurassic Jaunt: Worth Matravers, West Circular A 5 mile walk with great views. It has an optional steep climb up the 204 steps to St Alban’s/St Aldhelm’s Head on the main route. This can be avoided with a small detour. How to get there: - Grid Reference 974777; Turn right just after Corfe Castle for Kingston. After Kingston, follow the road for about a mile and turn right for Worth Matravers. The car park is on your right just before the village. Information: Toilets are available in the car park. There is a small parking fee. Walk details: As you leave the car park, turn right for about 70 metres and then take the path signposted ‘Church and Hill Bottom 1 mile’. Follow this through the gate and field until you reach the left-hand corner. Here turn right and follow the hedge/ wall for about ½ mile until you meet a T junction. Turn left and follow the path towards Hill Bottom. Just before reaching the houses, turn left through the kissing gate (1/3 mile). You are now on the Coast Path. The path ascends to the ridge above Chapman’s Pool and along to the war memorial (maintained by the MOD, 2/3 mile). Go over the stile onto Emmet’s Hill, follow the cliff path along to the top of another big dip in the Coast Path (1/2 mile), just prior to St
Albans/St Aldhelms Head. Descend the path to the dip at the bottom. Here, you can continue straight ahead and ascend the steps to the top where there is a seat to rest and the Coastguard lookout station or you can turn left over the stile, follow the less steeply-inclined valley to the top, then turn sharp right and return to the Coastguard station along the track. At the Coastguard station, continue along the coast path to Winspit (3/4 mile), turn left as you enter the old quarry and return up the valley to the village and straight past the duck pond. At the Square and Compass pub, stay left and the car park is on the left.. For more information on this walk or any of the others available around this fascinating part of the county, check the Jurassic Jaunts website at : www.jurassicjaunts.co.uk Chapman’s Pool Worth Matravers

WAREHAM IN BLOOM - SPRING FEVER! This month, with Spring in the air, we concentrate on news from the Wareham in Bloom Committee: Supporting Spring Bird Week in ‘The Secret Garden’ 2011 marks the 100th anniversary of the publication of ‘The Secret Garden’, a popular book for children by Frances Hodgson Burnett which has never been out of print. The garden at ‘Misselthwaite Manor’ is the site of both the near-destruction and the subsequent regeneration of a family. Using the garden motif, Burnett explores the healing power inherent in living things. Perhaps with this in mind, the Wareham in Bloom committee recently initiated a bird watching project which will help Wareham’s library users to see the wonders of new life emerging without leaving the comfort of the library. In 2009, an opportunity was spotted to enhance the little known rear garden area at the South Street library. The idea became known as ‘The Secret Garden’ project. With the help of volunteers from Stoborough Women’s Institute who planted and tended the tubs and flower beds, Wareham Rotary and Dorset County Council staff, Wareham in Bloom has transformed this area. It is now a colourful haven for all sorts of visiting birds, a peaceful area to sit and read, and for children’s story telling sessions. Bird feeders are in place and a new bird box with camera has been installed which feeds pictures to a flat screen inside the library. It is hoped that new occupants, possibly blue tits, will soon take up residence and delight viewers with a continuing display of life inside. The bird box project was launched in Spring time and what better time for bird-watchers? Breeding birds are now at their most active, migration is at a peak and there is always a good chance of finding a rarity, even in Wareham’s library garden. With this in mind - and one eye on Wareham’s entry into this year’s Britain in Bloom Finals - Wareham in Bloom is actively promoting an aspect of the competition which encourages wildlife, enhances the environment and involves the community. Spring Bird Week will run in Dorset from 23rd April – 1st May and there are many events planned, including courses and rambles in Purbeck at Durlston Country Park, Arne Nature Reserve and Wareham Forest. Various charges apply - for more details about Spring Bird Week call 01929 424443. For events at Durlston, why not download a leaflet? National Launch of Britain in Bloom – Tree Planting at Hauses Field Wareham in Bloom is in the national finals of RHS Britain in Bloom and will be judged in early August. To promote its national launch weekend, the Wareham in Bloom Committee were keen to bring in another initiative: ‘More Trees, More Good’ is an exciting new campaign that aims to encourage everyone to plant more trees, organised by the Woodland Trust, who state: ‘The UK is one of the least wooded countries in Europe with only 4% native woodland cover. But we need at least twice as many native trees and woods for the sake of wildlife and people, to combat climate change and improve our environment. Though ambitious, this aim is ultimately achievable – but only if we work together. From farmers and communities to schools and companies, we all have a role to play. Let’s form a vast nationwide tree-planting movement that everyone can join – and work alongside each other to create a well-wooded and greener UK.’
Find us online at www.warehamdistrictdirectory.co.uk Wareham in Bloom decided to participate in the scheme and applied for 105 native tree saplings, all completely free. Sunday 27th March was launch day when committee members, councillors and local residents turned up to help out with the planting at Hauses Field, Northmoor Park. The wildlife area along the banks of the stream running through the site was chosen as the best location and around 60 trees specifically chosen to attract and give new homes for our native wildlife in a hedge/copse effect were planted - field maple, hawthorn, hazel, rowan, and dogwood. Some flowering cherries were also planted however the bulk of these, plus some silver birch saplings, will be planted at Bestwall allotment site to provide a screen for an anti-deer fence erected by allotment tenants. It was a beautiful sunny morning and a good turn-out ensured that planting was achieved in just over an hour. Many thanks to all tree planters including residents Jeff Jones with partner Nicola Hopkins, Chris Hathway with sons Nathan and Daniel, Mary and Tony Wainwright and Tatiana Curtis. These trees will mature into a superb feature that will not only create a more attractive area but benefit wildlife and give pleasure for future generations to enjoy. It was great to see Wareham doing its bit to plant more trees and help the Woodland Trust achieve its goal. Well done everybody!

Stray Dog Sanctuary opens new shop The Stray Dogs Sanctuary has recently opened a shop in Seymour Place, St John’s Hill, Wareham. It is the first shop for this small local charity which has been going since 1999. They take in stray and unwanted dogs and re-home them to loving new homes. Judy Townsend says “We are so pleased with the welcome and support we are getting from the people of Wareham. All money raised goes to help the dogs in our care. We are happy to take all sorts of donations and keep a wish list for that special item you have been looking for”. If you want to know more about the charity, please call in for information and browse around the shop. You will be given a very friendly welcome.
Rotary Club of Wareham BUSY, BUSY, BUSY We were busy during the months of February and March. Firstly, at our Rotary Club meeting on 1st February, we donated £700 to both Wareham Hospital and MacMillan Cancer Support Dorset. This was the money raised from our Tree of Light at Wareham Hospital over the Christmas period. Secondly, you may recall that, back in October, we planted thousands of crocus bulbs in the hope that they would flower by 23rd February, Rotary’s ‘Thanks for Life’ day, which focuses on our efforts to rid the world of polio. We were pleased that most of the bulbs did flower in time and we are nearly there in our efforts to eradicate polio but a great deal of effort is still required. Finally, following the dreadful earthquake and tsunami in Japan, the club sent 4 shelter boxes, containing tents and essential life saving
equipment, as our contribution towards the international aid effort. We were also out on the streets of Wareham on Saturday 19th March raising money for the same cause. We are extremely grateful to all of you who give so generously to help us in our efforts help others. Don’t forget, you can look at our website at anytime on www.warehamrotary.co.uk to find out what we are up to.

Talking about wildlife with
Wildlife in your Garden Gardens are of great importance for local wildlife, providing food, shelter and nesting sites. Even the smallest garden can be made into a wildlife haven with a few simple measures. You will also benefit by having the pleasure of observing wildlife right from your doorstep. A mixture of native and non-native plants flowering at different times of the year will ensure food, nectar and pollen for birds and insects throughout the seasons. Primrose, heather and honeysuckle are good nectar plants; ivy and other climbing plants against bare walls give extra food and protection. A water feature such as a pond, even a small one, is a major attraction for birds, amphibians and dragonflies. By creating a pile of leaves or dead wood you’ll provide cold season shelter for hedgehogs, insects and toads. Attract birds to your garden by having a bird feeder, birdbath or a nestbox, making sure to keep your cat away from these. A compost bin will provide you with soil conditioner and make a home for many invertebrates. Most gardeners prefer their gardens pest-free, but it is best to rely on natural predators and organic pest control, as pesticides can harm or even kill the species you want to attract.
Ladybirds consume thousands of aphids in their lifetime, and hedgehogs and birds snack on slugs, helping to keep a natural balance. A wildlife garden does need basic maintenance such as regular pruning but it is also beneficial to leave some areas undisturbed with the grass uncut, thus creating extra wildlife habitat.
Niina Silvennoinen Dor se t Wild lif e Tr us t’ s Wil dlif e Friendly Garden Competition has categories for all types and sizes of garden this year – closing date 9th May. It’s your move ! I am ashamed to say that I have never understood how to play a game of chess. But I do know that if you sacrifice your King, you lose the game. The Christian faith turns that on its head. Jesus, called the King of Kings in the Bible - chose to be born as a baby, live a faultless life and then suffer a cruel death on a rugged Roman cross. His death saw Him take on the consequences of man’s rebellion against God – and win. We are told in the Bible that death could not hold Him – it had no claim on His life because He was without sin. And because He came as Our Saviour – representing fallen humanity and confronting the very dark side of sin and hell and death – we too can know forgiveness and eternal life with God in heaven. Paul, writing on the reality of the resurrection put it like this, “Death has been swallowed up in victory. Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death is your sting? The sting of death is sin and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.” (1 Corinthians 15:54-57). Behind the big game of life there are two powerful spiritual forces at work. One is working for our downfall and destruction, the other is working for our recovery and salvation. However important man may feel he is ultimately only like a pawn in a game of chess. But Our Creator God is always many moves ahead of his arch rival the Devil. We have the gift of life available if we want it; forgiveness and a future that is secure with God. Jesus made it all possible on the cross and through the resurrection. But God will only act on our behalf if we call out to Him. Over to you. It’s your move. Join us this Eastertide as we celebrate the glorious message of the Resurrection! You’ll be very welcome! With love in Jesus, Pastor Jim Morris The Manse Flat, Butt Lane , Bere Regis Tel: 01929 471270 The Daniel Project – a challenging documentary - watch it in your home. So what’s it all about? Is the world as we know it about to end? Who are ‘the wise’ who will understand the warnings and live? Bible prophecy is a collection of writings that claim to predict not only the path of human history, but also the signs of its eventual destruction. The Daniel Project puts these prophecies under a journalistic microscope, discovering that many appear to have already come to pass. We invite you to consider the evidence. Wednesday 27th April at 7.30pm Wareham Middle School Archaeologist Julian Richards will talk about ‘Stonehenge’ Stonehenge is probably England’s most iconic ancient monument. How and why was it built and who were the people involved in the construction of this massive megalithic structure? Archaeology is providing new evidence and may be able to answer some of those questions.

The Purbeck Association of The National Trust It’s a strange but common thing that when you live here you often don’t visit the local places that thousands of visitors come to see. Brownsea Island (pictured) is a typical example. This month marks the end of our programme of talks and Angela Cott, Property Manager of Brownsea Island will be telling us about plans for its future, and perhaps inspiring some of us to visit once again. As our monthly talks end our season of outings begins with a visit this month to Lacock Abbey and Village. The village is familiar as the setting for various period dramas, and the Abbey interior was used in Harry Potter films. Coming up we have visits to Exbury Gardens, Dyrham Park, Castle Drogo and Wisley, as well as one to the Olympic Site in London. Along with our programme of outings and talks we run several social events. Forthcoming ones include a visit to Walford Mill Craft Centre, a barbecue at Knoll Beach and a Greek meal. Our annual membership also remains great value at only £5, or £7.50 for a couple. If you’d like to get more out of your own National Trust membership (or your status as a Trust Volunteer) by joining us, call Membership Secretary Jay Burke on 423775 or see our website www.purbecknt.org.uk.

Biennial Festival of Arts at Shapwick First run to great acclaim in the summer of 2009, the Shapwick Festival of Arts is an event to raise funds for the maintenance, renovation and restoration of St. Bartholomew’s Church in Shapwick, so that it may be continue to be used and enjoyed by us all. The village of Shapwick (just off the B3082, opposite Badbury Rings between Wimborne and Blandford) is hosting its second, biennial Festival of Arts this summer during the weekend of the 25th and 26th June. This event is fun, fascinating and unique with 15 internationally acclaimed sculptors, 'live' carving bas relief plaques (to be silent auctioned during the weekend) along with dozens of artists and artisans demonstrating, exhibiting and selling their works. There will be various live entertainments and a variety of refreshments including a Pimm's Parlour, Dorset cream teas and wine bar. Once again we are creating a "Wall of Art" featuring autographed doodles on small canvasses by famous people. Raffle tickets for these will be available during the weekend and the draw will take place on
Sunday evening at 5.30pm. At our last event we collected doodles from 27 famous people including Joanna Lumley, Graham Norton, Patrick Stewart, Sir Ian McKellen, Lewis Hamilton, Sir Henry Cooper and many more. This year we hope to have a bigger and more diverse wall of art. There will be ample parking and lavatory facilities for both able bodied and disabled visitors. Please visit our website at shapwick.com/festival for more information with pictures.
