Dear Wareham, Wool & Bere Regis, So the holiday time is upon us. Hayden, our son, has gone to Grandma and Grandad’s for a couple of weeks up North. He could not wait to get in the car! When I called this evening and Grandma asked if he wanted to speak to me, his casual response was “No that’s fine”. I guess he is doing well then! Funny aren’t they. I can’t blame him… boat trips, steam engines, fishing, parks, games and undivided attention. That’s what Grandparents are for hey. We are very lucky. I hope if you are a grandparent that you get to see your grandchildren too. So — despite all the fun of the summer (and I do hope we get some more sunshine) do take a look through The Wareham District Directory and get some help in the house, get the car fixed, plan a surprise Birthday party, have a meal out, have your shoes repaired, your hair cut, get your accounts in order, have a will written or indeed lots of things done that you haven’t gotten around to yet. All of the advertisers inside will be very willing to help. Please give them a call and do mention the Directory! I always love to hear that the local people are getting lots of calls. There are of course many articles from local organisations and clubs who would also love to hear from you. The very lucky winner of the Big Three at the BIC last month was Mrs M Bell. Well done to you and we hope you have a great day out! This month the prize is back to the meal for two at the King’s Arms in Stoborough. Good luck. Steve, Martin and myself wish you all a fabulous summer! Very Best Wishes,
Debbie

Talking about wildlife with
Bees
The buzzing drone of a bee is a familiar sound and a sign of summer to us all. There are over 250 different types of wild bee in the UK, from the biggest bumble bees down to small solitary bees, and the part that they play in our ecosystem, food chain and economy is invaluable. Bumble and honeybees live in colonies, whereas solitary bees build their own nests and are not dependent on others. Most bees feed on pollen and nectar, although leaf cutter bees feed their larvae on chewed leaves instead of pollen. Some bees, such as cuckoo bumble bees and some solitary bees, don’t collect their own pollen but lay their eggs in other bees’ nests as parasites. Many plants and flowers depend directly on the pollination carried out by bees, as do dozens of crops, including an estimated one third of human food sources. However, despite their importance to us and the environment, bees are facing severe threats and even possible extinction caused by modern farming practices, increased chemical use, disease and loss of habitat. Our meadows no longer support the wide variety of wild flowers they once did, and many hedgerows have been lost in the last few decades, leading to a loss of vital food sources for the bees. Some bumblebee species have already vanished altogether and others are in decline. Urgent action is required to ensure the survival of our bee populations, and everyone can do their part to help reduce the plight of bees. By not using chemicals and by
WDD August 2011 page 12
growing traditional garden and native wild flowers such as foxglove, lavender, catmint, comfrey and clovers, you can create a natural, bee friendly habitat. Try to introduce wild vetches such as bird’s foot trefoil and red clover in to your lawn or at least part of it. The pollen is particularly pr o t ei n-r i ch a nd v er y i m po r t a nt f o r developing bumble bee embryos. Smaller bees will prefer single, open or flat-headed flowers such as daisies, scabious and evening primrose. Herbs are also excellent bee plants. Putting up a nesting box or tube is easy and providing a home for bees will benefit your garden as well. For more information on bee friendly gardening, see: www.dorsetwildlifetrust.org.uk/wg

Purbeck Cup - Schools Junior Football Competition Over the last term, eight Purbeck First Schools have been taking part in the Purbeck Cup, a Junior Football Competition sponsored by War eh am R ou n d T a b le . T h e k n oc k- o ut competition reached its climax in the last two weeks of term. On 14th July, Sandford St Martin’s First School played Bere Regis First School in the Final. Sandford twice came from behind to eventually win a thrilling and high quality match 4-2. The Cup and players’ medals were presented to the teams by Anthony Muraro, Chairman of Wareham Round Table. Schools that lost their first round match competed for the Purbeck Shield. The Final, a Swanage derby, was held on 21st July. In another exciting and high quality match, St Mary’s First School beat Swanage First School 4-3 after extra time. Anthony Muraro commented that “its been very rewarding to be involved in such a great competition which has given Purbeck children the opportunity to play football for their school”.
The competition was organised by Stoborough First School. Headteacher Darren Marklew commented “we’ve had a great start to what will be an annual event; we are hopeful that the competition will grow and that all First Schools will take part next year. We are very grateful to Wareham Round Table for their support”.

Purbeck Stone flooring from Suttles – bespoke and beautiful These days, the words bespoke and unique are often bandied about by those who design and build high-quality products for the home. In an era of mass production, everybody wants something different that stands out from the norm. In the case of flooring from local quarry Suttles though, this uniqueness is taken to a whole new level. The inherent characteristics within every piece of Purbeck flagstone extracted from our California Quarry in Swanage means that no two floors can ever be the same. The stone is renowned for being able to be polished to a high-gloss finish, revealing the myriad of fossils that have been embedded in it over millions of years. As well as a beautiful stone floor that will last a lifetime, you will also have something that reflects the area in which you live and the craftsmanship that has grown up there. Polishing takes place at our masonry works in Swanage, following the sawing and squaring process.
WDD August 2011 page 16
As testament to its desirability and wide appeal, Purbeck stone flooring can be found in the likes of the British Library in London, the McDonald Institute in Cambridge as well as homes across the UK. Stone is available for both internal and external use in a choice of finishes and to suit all budgets. We can also recommend a local craftsman who can lay it. So if you want a truly unique floor, find out more by visiting us in person at California Quarry, Panorama Road, Swanage BH19 2QS or online at www.stone.uk.com or by calling 01929 439444.

Wareham Author Celebration Wareham is busy making plans to celebrate the life and works of an, until now, overlooked famous, past resident. Children’s adventure book writer, and arguably, the originator of the ‘Ripping Yarns’ genre, Percy F Westerman, spent many years living the idyllic life on his houseboat ‘The Barge,’ moored by the towpath at Redclyffe, close to Wareham. It was from this converted Thames Barge that he penned more than 120 of his 174 published books. The Wareham Westerman Weekend on Saturday 29th and Sunday 30th October, 2011, is being organised through a collaboration between Wareham Library, Purbeck Information & Heritage Centre, Wareham Town Council, and a host of other organisations and individuals, all keen to raise awareness of this remarkable author whose lasting gift to Wareham was the founding of the Redclyffe Yacht Club in 1933, with both Percy and his author son John having been past Commodores of the club. A detailed programme will be available soon, but will include children’s pirate parade, make and race a model raft, a treasure hunt, a colouring competition and a live music event. An exhibition exploring Percy F. Westerman’s links with Wareham and a display of books from the Wareham Library reference collection, donated by the Redclyffe Yacht Club will be a key feature of the weekend along with an illustrated talk and a reminiscence project. Jude Leyman, Library Manager said “We are very excited about the weekend and an opportunity to raise awareness of this prominent children’s writer whose contribution to the literary heritage of Wareham should be celebrated by the town that he loved so much. The special collection of his books is an important feature of our reference collection here at Wareham Library”. Liz Roberts, Centre Manager said “We are delighted to be involved in the project and will be jointly organising a series of events of the weekend with our colleagues in Wareham Library”. His stories covered tales of the sea, scouting, flying machines, deeds of derring-do, mysteries, two world wars, tales from history and much, much, more. Titles included The Scouts of Seal Island, The Bulldog Breed, Fighting for Freedom and The Flying Submarine. These gripping stories fired the imagination of generations of young readers encouraging a love of books and reading to remain with them for the rest of their lives. Percy’s first book A Lad of Grit was published in 1908. During the 1930’s Percy was voted the ‘Most Popular Boys Author’ in a poll sponsored by a national newspaper and organised through public libraries. By his death on February 22 1959 his books had been published in many languages and had sold in excess of 1.5 million books worldwide.

Families under attack! God to the rescue! School is well and truly out and the summer holidays are upon us. As well as exciting holidays at home and abroad many of our village children will be looking to get involved in summer activities and holiday play schemes. Our own humble offering from the Chapel in Butt Lane this month is to run our four day themed children’s Holiday Club. Now in its tenth year this Club has become very popular for the 4 to 12 year old age group and we average about 50 children a day. This year we are ‘going’ Egyptian’ as an intrepid Time Team investigates and uncovers the story of Joseph in ancient Egypt the central Bible focus this year will be on Joseph and his amazing designer multi-coloured coat. To make sure we get the story right and don’t rely on Messieurs Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice for our facts all the research is based on the original ‘script’ God Himself has left for us in the Bible. The story recorded for us in Genesis would be enough in itself to launch a mini T.V. soap series. The historical account has all the ingredients for great drama; dreams and visions, family feuds, involving envy and hatred, passion and lust, scenes of opulence, the squalor of prison and a meteoric rise to power of a young man who trusted God and did his best to follow Him. Although centered on the life of Joseph, the story is about God working behind the scenes to bring a divided family together. It touches on the difficulties we all share in our families - domestic difficulties between parents and children – and particularly in this case the sibling rivalry that can sometimes spawn jealousy and anger. In other words the everyday activity of learning to live and share together as a family. Most of us can identify with these difficulties. No one said family life would be easy. The saying is true that says you can choose your friends but you can’t choose your family! At a time when family life and family structures are coming under increasing attack in our modern society we need to get back to basics and look to the good and sensible advice given in God’s Word. Of course that does mean we have to concede that we don’t know it all and therefore need to put our trust in the wisdom of the One who created the family unit – God Himself. My pastoral experience of village life would suggest that many are still trying to work things out in their own strength. Which is why I would implore you to follow the example of Joseph and put your trust firmly in the God of the Bible. Through Jesus Christ God is only a prayer away. Why not bring each member of your family to God in prayer? Parent under pressure? – tell God about it! Fed up with your brother or sister? – tell God about it! A problem shared with God is not just a problem halved – it can often be a problem solved. May God bless and encourage you in your family life. Love in Jesus Pastor Jim Morris The Manse Flat Butt Lane Bere Regis Tel: 01929 471270 News in Brief – Holiday Club 2011 – for boys and girls between the ages of 4 and 12 years old. This year we are ‘going Egyptian’ as the title PYRAMID ROCK sets the scene for the story of Joseph and his brothers. We shall be incorporating the usual manic mix of lively songs, puppets, drama, quizzes and competitions and of course – plenty of good news!! Starts on Wednesday 10th August and runs through Thursday (11th), Friday (12th) concluding on Sunday (14th) with a Family and Prize Giving Service. All meetings at 10am. Free DVDs on loan! We have a selection of Christian DVDs on a number of subjects concerning Christians including many which examine the biblical alternatives to evolution. To find out more how you can watch these DVDs on free loan please give Pastor Jim a call on 01929 471270 or email him at jimjan.morris192@yahoo.co.uk.

The Purbeck Association of The National Trust Living in the UK we all learn to take our chances with the weather. At PANT we’re lucky as many of our events aren’t affected too much. Snow or rain won’t stop our talks of course, although they may stop a few people making their way to our venues in Swanage or Wareham. Similarly on our outings in the summer months, most places we visit have something of interest indoors as well as out, so rain may be annoying, but it won’t usually ruin the day. Most of our Social events take place indoors as well, but one annual event we always worry about however is our barbecue in July. We hold this at the Discovery Centre at Knoll Beach. For the last two years we’ve had rain and drizzle on the day and we’ve had to squeeze around tables inside the building, with a few hardy souls sitting outside under the sun awnings! This year however we picked the right day, and despite earlier forecasts of rain, we enjoyed glorious weather, as our picture shows. Our annual membership is great value at only £5, or £7.50 for a couple. If you’d like to get more out of your own National Trust membership (or your status as a Trust Volunteer) by joining us, call Membership Secretary Jay Burke on 423775 or see our website www.purbecknt.org.uk.
