Dear Neighbours, A Very Happy New Year to You! We had a great Christmas with my Mum and Dad who, despite the snow made it all the way from Hull to stay with us. Hayden pleaded with Grandma to drive down here which really did help her make the decision to set off. All was fine with a “good run” as my Dad would say. Hayden was very good and woke up at his usual 8am Christmas morning so we were all able to enjoy the day and not sleep through it! Father Christmas was very generous and we were all delighted with our gifts. I hope you had an equally successful and joyful time. I do hear that some have had the ‘dreaded bug’. Hopefully not too many! Steve and I had a quiet New Year with a candle lit dinner for two which is most unusual I have to say. So, now is the time to put those New Year’s resolutions into practice and really make 2011 one of the best ever! Don’t forget if you need anything doing in or around the home we have all the local trades people here to help you. Keeping business local will support our local economy hugely. It keeps the money flowing in our area! If you have a ‘thank you’ to send to one of our advertisers please let me know and I will print it for you. We love to see those. Steve and I wish you All the Very Best for 2011!

OUR TRIBUTE TO CHARLES R PATTERSON HONORARY TOWNSMAN OF WAREHAM 11.10.1932 – 07.12.2010 OUR PRESIDENT/CHAIRMAN As a Society, what can we add to all the recent glowing tributes from other societies and clubs, paid by colleagues and associates of Charles during his 40 years of devoted civic service? We can simply thank him! Thank him for 33 years of selfless dedication to the cause of bringing healing and lasting friendship between two countries that were riven by war. For his ever present willingness to subordinate his own needs to the demands of the Society. For his guidance, his loyalty, his never-ending fund of ideas for the benefit of our Society and so very much more. We can thank him for his friendly, warmhearted manner, his humour and his open delight in their company and customs, which gained the esteem and affection of all our friends in the Partnerschaftsverein e.V.Hemsbach and helped to cement the closeness of our relationships over all these years. Especially we can thank him for never wavering in his commitment to the Society, despite increasing ill- health and frailty, in particular during these last months after the recent visit from Hemsbach, when from somewhere he found the bravery and strength to carry out his duties as Chairman, design our special Anniversary Badge, concentrate on our Anniversary Book and its contents and propose an excellent

WDD January 2011 page 8

suggestion for our special gift to Hemsbach. Also, plans had been made to present a special Award in his name, on behalf of the Society, to the Purbeck School. Unfortunately, before this could be realised, he was admitted to hospital and the rest is history. It is such a wicked irony of fate that he never lived to enjoy our 25th Anniversary, although right until the very last moment he never relinquished the idea, always hoping for the best, never complaining and looking forward to the occasion with great pleasure and anticipation. So thank you and God bless you dear Charles! For your warmth, your affection, your friendship, your great personality, your kindness, sense of fun and your boundless enthusiasm for life. Most of all for allowing our Society to play such an important role for you, when so many other societies had equal claims on your time, talent and energy. The memory of you will always remain as a bright thread woven into our history. The fact that the Society will continue into the future is your own proud legacy to us. Myrna Gomes Maria Secretary

Wareham Town Council Meeting 21st December 2010: At the commencement of the meeting, the Mayor called for a minute’s silence in memory of Mr. Charles Patterson, six times Mayor of Wareham and Honoured Townsman, who had passed away on 7th December.

Town Council Budget 2011/2012 The Council received the Council’s proposed Budget for Financial Year 2011/2012 following the recommendation of the Policy, Resources and Finance Committee. It was noted that Members of that committee had worked very hard to finalise the figures, and allocated £8,000 from reserves to help with various projects, so that a 0% increase in Precept (the Town Council’s share of the Council Tax from Purbeck District Council) could be proposed, using the same Council Tax base as last year. Councillor K Critchley, Chairman of the Committee, explained that there was a slight difference (£218) in the chargeable figure since there were always slight fluctuations due to population/household changes, however this was not set by the Town Council but by the District Council. It was then resolved that a Precept figure of £106,968 be set and requested from Purbeck District Council in January 2011.

Council Meeting Dates/Change of Meeting Days/Calendar of Meetings The Council considered items to change meeting dates to Wednesdays instead of Tuesdays, to alter two dates on the published calendar of meetings due to clashes with Purbeck District Council meetings, and the proposed Calendar of Meetings for the next Civic Year. All items were deferred until the January 25th meeting of Council.

CCTV Partnership Group – Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) Cameras Council had received a letter from the Dorset Community Safety Partnership regarding the installation of ANPR cameras in Wareham at the A351 flyover at two locations, above and below the bridge. Installation costs would be met by the Safety Partnership. Councillors were concerned that the benefits might not be apparent for the residents and taxpayers of Wareham, although the benefits to the Police were obvious. The Council already paid for maintenance of six non–ANPR CCTV cameras in the town, including one camera at the A351 flyover. Members were also concerned to hear of an extra £1100 per annum extra maintenance cost for the ANPR cameras which would somehow need to be paid for by the local community, since there was no Town Council budget for this item. It was resolved that more information regarding the benefits of new ANPR cameras for Wareham Town was needed and that Inspector Weeks of Wareham Police should be invited to the next meeting on 25th January to explain this in greater detail before any decision was taken.

Dorset Waste Partnership – Dorset Waste Forum Meeting Councillor Mrs S Elmes volunteered to attend a meeting of the Dorset Waste Forum in Dorchester on 20th January 2011.

Library Closures Ahead? Council received a letter from Dorset County Council (Cultural Services, Library and Arts Service) regarding possible changes to Dorset Library Services, including closures, as a result of County Council budget changes. It was resolved that a reply should be sent (copied to the town’s MP) to the County Council to express the Town Council’s disappointment at the possible lack of funding for a valuable community and educational resource. It was considered that the library service in Wareham was crucial to the surrounding community. The Town Council, while understanding that there had to be

WDD January 2011 page 10

11 some savings, strongly opposed any attempt to close public libraries in general.

Urgent Items: New Bus Services Timetable – Services 103 and 103A Councillor Mrs A Selby drew attention to a recent short notice change whereby a new contract had been signed for the Service 103 and 103A from Monday 13th December 2010. Service 103 would now be run by Damory Coaches using a revised timetable. The Service103A would continue to be run as a taxi-bus by Garrison cars – however the pre-booking would now be handled by Dorset Passenger Transport. Contact details for new timetables: Damory Coaches: 01258 452545. Taxi-bus booking line: 0845 2410117 (local call rates apply) (See DorsetForYou.com website for detailed timetable information). Donations: Policy, Resources and Finance Committee, 8th December 2010 – it was noted that the following donations were made at the meeting: £50 to the Dorset Blind Association and £50 to the ‘Vitalise’ charity. A further donation to the Wareham Carnival was deferred until clarification had been received as to how the donation would be allocated.

Wareham Town Council contact: 01929 553006. Bookings taken for Corn Exchange, use of the Council Chamber for weddings/civil partnerships plus sports pitches at the Recreation Ground, Worgret Road. Website: www.wareham-tc.gov.uk

Talking about wildlife with

Spectacular Starlings Gregarious and widespread, starlings are one of the most common British garden birds. Smaller than blackbirds, their plumage is glossy with iridescent green and purple in the summer, turning darker in the winter, with white speckles. On the ground, they walk with a curious waddle, but their flight is fast and direct, aided by the pointed, triangular wings. The female and the male are almost indistinguishable. Starlings are omnivorous, happy to eat almost anything from a variety of fruits, seeds and insects to worms and kitchen scraps. Assisted by the female, the male builds the grass nest in a cavity of a tree, wall or a building. Normally one brood is produced in April or May, consisting on average of four to seven glossy, pale blue eggs. The fledglings leave the nest at three weeks of age. Autumn sees the arrival of hundreds of thousands of migrants from Scandinavia and Eastern Europe, here to overwinter in large communal flocks consisting of thousands of birds. Returning to their roosts at dusk, starlings provide a spectacular sight in the sky by performing complex aerial acrobatics, known as murmurations. The reason for this behaviour has mystified biologists for centuries, but it is generally believed that by flocking together in this manner, they aim to protect themselves from predators such as hawks and peregrine falcons. Despite their widespread presence in Britain, starling numbers have declined in recent times by about 70 per cent

WDD January 2011 page 12

and they are now a Red List species of conservation concern. Look out for roosting flocks over reed beds, for example on the edge of Poole Harbour, but other plants will do as a substitute. Last winter a flock roosted in a large clump of bamboo in Corfe Mullen, which was subsequently cut down. If you are lucky enough to have starlings roosting on or near your land, enjoy one of nature’s spectacles while it lasts as the birds will disperse in the spring. Four for Sixes - New tents for Sandford Cubs Sixes Cub Scout leader Matt Renaut, along with the Cub Scouts thanked members of the Wareham Round Table for their kind donation of four brand new 6 person tents to accommodate the "Sixes" when they go camping. The tents will be used by Sandford Cubs to introduce 8-10 year-old Cub Scouts to range of activities including regular camps in Lulworth and the surrounding areas. David Hixson-Ward, Chairman of Wareham Round Table said the Round Table members hope the Cubs stay warm and dry in their impressive new tents and hope that they give years of good service to the Cub Scouts.

Mr Hixson-Ward acknowledged that this donation, like others to local charities and local worthy causes, would not be possible without the support of local businesses and members of the Wareham community and said that part of the thanks should go to these people too. The majority of the fundraising is done through the Wareham Round Table Beer Festival (Beerex) which is held every Easter in Wareham. If anyone would be interested in finding out more about what Wareham Round Table does, please feel free to contact us via our website www.warehamroundtable.org.uk. 1st Sandford Cubs inspect one of their four new tents recently donated to them by Wareham Round Table No.1224, with the help of their leaders and members of Wareham Round Table

A Message from a King! As the New Year dawns and the Christmas decorations and festivities are put back into their boxes, we all have to face the reality of the times we live in. This New Year will surely see more sweeping economic cutbacks as outlined by the Coalition Government taking their hold on our lives. With increased VAT prices, cuts in benefits, soaring petrol prices and a general tightening of the collective belt we have to be ready to face a year of austerity. As I write these notes in mid December students have already taken to the streets and industrial leaders are planning to disrupt public services in protest. For many years we as a nation have enjoyed times of affluence, but now it seems the bubble has burst and we have to face the reality of national austerity. Over seventy years ago in 1939 darkness threatened this small island as its citizens faced another World War and an enemy who would come to within twenty-one miles of its borders. That Christmas, amidst the gloom, King George VI chose to resurrect a tradition his father had launched – an annual Christmas message to all the inhabitants of the then British Empire. The speech would go on to be famous as the King, not noted as a compelling speaker, quoted a few lines from a poem. “I said to the man who stood at the Gate of the Year, ‘Give me a light that I may tread safely into the unknown.’ And he replied, “Go out into the darkness, and put your hand into the Hand of God. That shall be better than light, and safer to you than a known way.” No one really knows how the King came to know these words, penned in a 1908 war poem “The Desert” by Minnie Louise Haskins. But they became an inspiration to a nation under severe pressure. As you and I stand at the Gate of another year, not knowing what the future holds, we need a reliable light that will guard us and guide us through these austere times. Jesus Christ, God’s eternally begotten Son, is The Light of the World. God Our Father is the only One who knows what lies ahead. He is the only One who has a purpose built plan for each and every life. For many the year ahead is already full of darkness and fear. But, no matter what the future holds, if we will by faith put our hand into the hand of the Almighty, we may also safely confidently tread into the unknown. We may think we know how to deal with life’s problems; we may be supremely confident in our own abilities; we may try to reassure ourselves that we can cope. But let me be bold enough to say to you all that human resources, however brilliant, are simply not enough. And I say that on the basis of God’s Word. “For all have sinned and come short of God’s glory.” Whether it’s a deeply personal situation or an international crisis of global proportions, we need outside help from the One who made us. I’m not a great lover of New Year resolutions because I know that in my own strength, I just don’t have the will power to see them through. But if you resolve in your heart to seek the Lord and give your life over to Him, He will enable and empower you by His divine strength to cope. You will never be perfect this side of eternity and you will still make mistakes, but you will be able to face each day of the year with love and hope in your heart through Jesus Christ. May He guide you and your family, With love in Jesus, Pastor Jim Morris The Manse Flat Butt Lane Bere Regis Tel: 01929 471270 New Year start up times for Bere Regis Chapel midweek activities SUNDAY WORSHIP EVERY SUNDAY at 10.00am & Junior Church for the youngsters The Bible Fellowship Group restarts on Tuesday 18th January at 7.30pm The Sonseekers Youth Group restarts on Friday 14th January at 6.30pm The TRUST Youth Club restarts on Friday 14th January at 8.00pm – 9.30pm Our thanks to all those who joined us for worship and praise over the Christmas season. Miracle Theatre presents ‘Beauty & the Beast from Mars’ 21 January 7:30pm Corfe Castle Village Hall 01929 480483 / www.artsreach.co.uk Miracle Theatre’s winter show is a space-inspired homage to the swinging sixties and science fiction B-movies of the era. Beauty and the Beast from Mars retains all the elements of a traditional family pantomime with out-of-thisworld extras, from rock 'n roll tunes to ruthless space aliens. When super star heartthrob Bobby Beauty finds himself hotly pursued by a gorgeous alien from Mars, he’s sure his luck is in. Little does he know that he has actually been implanted with the secret rocket defence code she needs to secure her domination of planet Earth! As Bobby falls for the alien’s charms, can his number one fan, Nurse Bumper, a nobody from Neasden, save the human race – or at least fulfil her wildest dream of singing Bobby’s backing vocals? With original 1960s inspired tunes from a 4-piece band, live video animation, technical wizardry and huge laughs from Cornwall’s foremost ‘masters of comedy’, Beauty and the Beast from Mars promises to be great all-round family entertainment. If Dr Who did panto…this would be it!

The Purbeck Association of The National Trust It was an icy end to our year as we had our annual Christmas lunch at the Dorset Golf & Country Club. Usually we look out across the course and watch the golfers as we eat, but this year we looked out at a completely white landscape. The weather stopped a few people from getting there, but amongst those who made it were our special guests, Laurie Clark, General Manager of The Purbeck Estate, and Mandy Jarvis, the Estate’s Community & Volunteer Manager. As we start 2011 we look forward to an active year with nearly 30 separate activities planned. These include talks, social events and outings. This month we’re going to ‘The Dogs’ at Poole Stadium, and having a talk about the work of Leeson House. Our February talk will be about weather forecasting, and December’s snow will probably figure prominently in the question period. Our annual membership remains great value at only £5, or £7.50 for a couple. If you’d like to get more out of your own National Trust membership (or your status as a Trust Volunteer) by joining us, call Membership Secretary Jay Burke on 423775 or see our website www.purbecknt.org.uk.

News from the National Trust I hope this finds you full of the joys of a New Year and fully rested after time spent with family and friends over the festive season. January is, of course, the time to make New Year’s resolutions. So if you’ve set yourself the challenge of meeting new people, learning something new or getting out and about more then we may well be able to help. Starting in February we’re launching a new beach clean volunteer group. Based at the Studland Discovery Centre, the 'Studland Tidy Group’ will be a hit squad keeping our coastline clear of debris washed up by the tide or left by careless visitors. It offers a great opportunity to get out and about along our stunning coastline whilst meeting new people. Alongside the practical activity there will be the opportunity to learn about Purbeck’s wildlife and countryside as each task will have a discovery theme. The route the activity will follow will be suitable for everyone so why not bring the family along? (Under 18s will need to be accompanied by an adult.) So come and find out what a Pandora Shell is whilst untangling discarded fishing line or learn to tell the difference between Crossleaved and Bell Heather whilst extracting a wind blown plastic bag from the spines of a gorse bush. Starting in February we’ll meet 10.30 on the third Sunday of every month at the Discovery Centre at Knoll Beach and we’ll be back there at 12.30. Below are the dates and themes for the first four sessions:

WDD January 2011 page 28

Sunday 20th February: Explore the Shore, Sunday 20th March: Changing Coastlines, Sunday 17th April: Spring Flowers and Sunday 15th May: Shorebirds. We are also launching our very own youth group this month which will build on our previous work with local schools and colleges by providing an opportunity for young people to develop their skills in and understanding of practical countryside work. Hopefully those of you between 14 and 18 years old who have already expressed an interest in these activity days have already signed up for the first session but if not do get in touch. The group only has 11 places so its first come first served! For more information or to register your interest on either of these opportunities get in touch with Rachel Rodman on 01929 477320 or email rachel.rodman@nationaltrust.org.uk. Follow West Street for about 1/3 mile, turn right where indicated and park in the Pay and Display Car Park. Information: Toilets are available at the entrance to the car park. Walk details: Exit the car park at the opposite end from where you entered it and turn right along the road up to Corfe Common. Follow the path for about 200 metres and take the signed right fork along the Purbeck Way which will lead you at an angle of 45 degrees to a small wooden bridge at the bottom of the common (signposted ‘Chapman’s Pool 3’). Cross the 2 wooden bridges, through the gate and up the path for 30 metres until you meet the farm entrance on your left. Continue for another 50 metres to a gate under the tree on the left. At the road, turn left along the road for about 200 metres, then turn left, back into another field. Continue through the fields, through 2 gates and you will come to a farm and other houses (1 1/3 miles). Just after the houses, you will see a sign to your left for Corfe Castle. Follow the path through the first gate (¼ mile), continue to follow the hedge on your right until you meet a gate-sized gap in the hedge. Turn right here and walk to the bottom right hand corner where you will go under the railway line and turn right (½ mile). Follow the path which will lead you over a stream, behind a school and into the main street in Corfe Castle. Cross the road, turn right and there will be a path on your left between the houses which will lead you back to West Street. Turn left and proceed back to the car park. WAGGY TAILS RESCUE, is a registered charity based in Ferndown. They rescue and re-home dogs that have been abandoned, neglected or otherwise in need of a good home. Special Sam Sam is about 5 years old but has had little input so needs an experienced collie owner. He needs lots of exercise and stimulation, as he likes to be with someone doing something. He would make a good companion for someone who works outside and/or likes to walk. He has not been socialised much so far so a home of his own would be better for him. He is very affectionate but big and bouncy so no young children.

IF YOU WANT TO SUPPORT WAGGY TAILS AND CAN’T AFFORD TO DONATE… GIVE YOUR TIME INSTEAD! If you have a few hours to spare – come and join a very friendly team and have lots of fun at the same time as doing something worthwhile. We particularly need help in our three shops, (Parkstone and West Moors) so retail experience and outgoing personality would be appreciated. Lots of different jobs (unpaid) available, so phone us on 01202 875000 and tell us what you are good at!
