Singing in the rain! As I write this month we are still struggling with the intermittent summer weather conditions. No two days seem the same! One good thing for farmers and gardeners everywhere has been the recent downpours of rain. Not yet sustained enough to make a huge difference to our parched and arid Dorset landscape but welcome nevertheless. As we all know I’m sure rain water, also called precipitation, is a natural feature of the earth's weather system. Air currents in the atmosphere bring evaporated water from the ocean and the earth's surface up into the sky. The evaporated liquid condenses in the cold air, forming moisture-filled rain clouds. As well as providing a means of washing and keeping clean rain water's most well-known and most important effect is providing us with water to drink. There is nothing quite like a glass of ‘Adam’s Ale’ to quench our thirst on a hot summer’s day! But in spiritual and emotional terms we can also find ourselves with a deep thirst in our hearts. A thirst for inner peace and fulfillment. A thirst that cannot be quenched by a glass of water. I am reminded of a time when Jesus, God’s Son, was in Jerusalem for the Feast of Tabernacles, a celebration by Israel of God’s faithfulness to them in the wilderness. Part of the celebration involved water being poured onto the altar each day to remind everyone of the water God miraculously provided for a thirsty Israel in the wilderness. On the last day of the Feast we read in John chapter 7 and verses 37-38, Jesus stood before the crowd and in a loud voice said, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink. Whoever believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from within him.” God was making a promise through His Son, Jesus, that is still relevant to each one reading these words in the twenty-first century! Part of our human condition involves going through times of spiritual or emotional ‘dryness’. We may feel a deep dissatisfaction and though we try many of the world’s ‘water systems’ - money, material possessions, relationships etc. they all ultimately will fail us and our thirst remains unquenched. God alone can meet that need within and fully satisfy. The living water that Jesus was referring to is God’s Holy Spirit, who comes into our lives when we trust Jesus bringing a new dimension of life and purpose. Jesus can bring us the refreshing that we need; He can cleanse and wash us, making us clean on the inside – that’s why He died on the Cross; and He is available to quench our thirst by His presence in our lives day by day. But the promise Jesus gave in the above quote is conditional. It begins with the words, “if anyone is thirsty…” If you’re not thirsty – you don’t need to drink, but if you are parched then you do. It’s as simple as that. The reality is most of us are too proud to admit to Almighty God (or anyone else sometimes!) that we do have this thirst within. Maybe you feel that your life is in the midst of an emotional wilderness and you can identify with that deep spiritual thirst. Today Jesus still says, “come to Me and I will be all that you need”. If you need to talk to someone – we are here for you. May God shower His blessing on you at this time. With love in Jesus, Pastor Jim Morris The Manse Flat Butt Lane Bere Regis Tel: 01929 471270 News in Brief – Holiday Club 2011 – for boys and girls between the ages of 4 and 12 years old. Talking about wildlife with
Summer Heathland Nights Heathlands provide a unique habitat for a wide range of wildlife, and Dorset heaths are amongst the best in Britain. Summer nights are a perfect time to visit and explore, as the heaths are at their most colourful at this time of the year, and many species remain active until late evening when the weather is warm. Many heathland plants are in their full bloom and glory from July to September. Heather, gorse and bog asphodel create a stunning sea of purple and yellow, with the cotton grass adding its fluffy white flowers to the colourful mix. Sundew, Britain’s most common carnivorous plant, flourishes in the damp, boggy areas, as do many different species of dragonflies. For insect enthusiasts, there is also an array of other invertebrates, including heath grasshoppers, emperor moths and wolf spiders. Birds are plentiful in the summer and on a fine evening you can admire the dashing flight of the hobby, catching dragonflies for dinner. At twilight, the enigmatic nightjars become active. These summer visitors from Africa are a rare and elusive species, and although you may not be able to catch a glimpse, they can often be recognised by the male’s strange ‘churring’ song that echoes through the ni ght. include the Dartford Warbler, stonechats and woodlarks. No doubt you will have heard about the huge fire that burnt around a third of Dorset Wildlife Trust’s Upton Heath in June. We have been overwhelmed by the response of local people, who turned out in large numbers in the days after the fire to help to rescue surviving reptiles. Now the work begins to make sure that the untouched areas of heath are in the best condition for wildlife, assess the depth of the fire damage and to manage the regrowth and recovery of the ecosystem for the full range of rare plants and animals. While we will see green shoots very quickly, this will be just the start of a long road to full recovery.

Poppy Party takes inside track to success! In spite of the foulest weather possible Wareham put on the most entertaining Street Party, converted last minute into a Town Hall party, ever. This was in aid of the RBL scheme to build Battle Back to Recovery Centres to support severely injured troops back from Afghanistan. Chairman Malcolm Russell said, ‘Under the most adverse conditions once again Wareham overcame even the British summer to raise £2,000 plus change for this worthy cause.’ Locals and visitors arrived soaked to the skin but soon got into the party mood. Our entertainers were from opera to Vera Lynn oldies and all went down well with everyone especially for the nonagenarians present. The Town Hall was buzzing. Edward Fox opened the eventand stayed for nearly 4 hours! He said, in his best Jackal accent, that ‘thiswas just too good to miss’. All services were represented.
Our thanks have togo especially to Wareham Lions for their magnificent efforts in turning thisevent around. Malcolm Russell added ‘Roll on 2012 when we can repeat this forthe Olympics, our Queen’s Diamond celebrations and the Great Fire of Wareham 250th anniversary.’
Cllr Doreen Cleaton (Wareham Mayor), Jacquie Hall (Cryer), Edward Fox and Malcolm Russell

In the upper Hall there will be stalls and a raffle etc and during the course of the morning Tony Bates will be showing you a presentation entitled “All things bright and beautiful in Bere Regis” and a slide show by Michael Eastment of all his amazing old images of the village. Please support this event as it promises to be something very interesting and it is in aid of a very worthy cause. We look forward to seeing you there. If anyone can help with making cakes or donating raffle prizes or delivering advertising please give me a call. A person who was suffering with dementia wrote the following poem and it really helps others to understand their thoughts and fears. I found it on the Alzheimer’s Society Website and I would like, if I may to share it with you, in the hope that we can all become more aware and understanding of this disease.
Love me till my life is done. Do not ask me to remember, don’t try to make me understand, let me rest and know you’re with me, Kiss my cheek and hold my hand. I’m confused beyond your concept, I am sad and sick and lost, all I know is that I need you to be with me at all cost. Do not loose your patience with me, do not scold or curse or cry, I can’t help the way I’m acting, cant be different though I try. Just remember that I need you, that the best of me is gone, please don’t fail to stand beside me, love me till my life is done. Although this is a very heart wrenching insight into someone’s suffering, the wonderful news is that there is a lot of hope for people now that are diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and Dementia and this is achieved through medical research and then of course the memory cafes and the valuable practical support given by the Alzheimer’s Society. All this needs funding and that is where we can all help, please support the Pop In Place Memory Morning on the 15th July 10 am at the Drax Hall and join with the Alzheimer’s Society who are leading the fight against dementia. Dates for your diary for August Pop In Place Children’s Summer Activities age 5 to 16 Friday 19th August 10am until 12 noon - Darrell Wakelam Arts and Craft workshop. Remember that fabulous wedding dress Becky Granger wore on TV's Coronation Street? How about the coat worn in the Hollywood cult movie: Bill and Teds Bogus Journey? Now you have the chance to see these and even more amazing artefacts at the famous 'Celebrity Exhibition'. A remarkable one-off exhibition brings together some of the most iconic showbiz props ever to grace the town. Normally kept locked away from public view, the immediately recognisable items will be on show for all to see. Star attraction in the exhibition has to be Marilyn Monroe's Little Black Dress. Who knows what glittering Hollywood events she would have worn this to? There is also the spectacular God of Mischief costume from the hilarious movie Son of the Mask, and the earrings once owned by Elizabeth Taylor. While for Sci-Fi fans there are the electro-magnetic boots from the hugely successful film Face Off starring John Travolta and Nicholas Cage. Fans of the golden days of Hollywood can see Fred Astaire's shoes and Doris Day's exquisite rhinestone bracelet. For more information, see: www.bic.co.uk

The Purbeck Association of The National Trust A few years ago we took the decision to spend the money we’ve raised for the National Trust on specific local projects. Not all supporter groups do this. Some, for example, give everything they raise to major appeals, like the one that’s just started for Castle Drogo in Devon which needs major repairs. We felt that because we have such close links with the Purbeck Estate, that our members should be able to see the results of our efforts. Sometimes we don’t see the results immediately. The most extreme example is probably the first bull that we agreed to buy for the Trust’s Red Devon herd that grazes Hartland Moor. It took nearly two years to find and buy a bull with exactly the right pedigree. Our most recent donation bore fruit much more quickly. The picture shows our Chairman and Secretary watching a demonstration of stone carving. This has become very popular at Corfe Castle, and we’ve recently paid for several of the protective aprons like the one being worn. Our annual membership is great value at only £5, or £7.50 for a couple. If you’d like to get more out of your own National Trust membership (or your status as a Trust Volunteer) by joining us, call Membership Secretary Jay Burke on 423775 or see our website www.purbecknt.org.uk.

The Red Orb Exhibition Raising the profile of three dimensional art to a new level! 10 Purbeck Sculptors, 9 invited sculptors, 5 selected sculptors, all with one aim in common:A unique collaboration, exclusively showcasing an eclectic mix of contemporary sculpture, from some of the South's most accomplished threedimensional artists, working in a diverse variety of mediums and styles from willow to wire and from the classical to the contentious! Featuring work from Andrew Thomas, Marzia Colonna ARBS, Jonathan Sells, Greta Berlin, Robert Mileham, Vivien Mallock ARBS, Scott Taylor, Richard Atkinson-Willes, Moira Purver ASWA, Emma Pickering, Martin Debenham, Carlotta Barrow amongst many others, it will be a totally new experience for Purbeck, as an exhibition of this kind has never previously been organised in this area. Curator Andrew Thomas said: “This is such a tremendous achievement for all those involved.” “Purbeck is traditionally known for its landscape artists, but we really want to change peoples’ perspective of what is happening here. There is definitely an emerging cultural art scene that will rival anything in the U.K. which is hugely positive for us,” ” We hope with enough support ’Red Orb’ will be an annual event.” “Leeson House is also such a unique venue, I think everyone who visits will be surprised and inspired.”
