Hello Wareham, Wool & Bere Regis, We welcome the new Mayor of Wareham, Mrs Doreen Cleaton to her office! Please see the article on page 10. June already… I do hope the warmer weather lasts into July and August. The sunshine seems to make such a lot of difference. We are off to Dartmoor for a few days this week which I am thoroughly looking forward to. Hayden is having swimming lessons and really enjoying it, so the pool will be a winner all round I think. Gives me time to sit and have a coffee at the side! We have a full Directory for you this month with many local trades… plumbers, kitchens, live-in care, landscaping supplies, carpets, local pubs & restaurants, blinds, conservatories and many more. There are also some exciting events coming up too… The Sandbanks Beach Polo, TankFest Evolution, a fantastic Speed weekend which we are going to see for the first time, a painting class and an open day at a quarry. Do mention The Wareham District Directory when calling any of the advertisers. This makes all the difference! There is a prize wordsearch and many other interesting articles to read inside. So why not pour yourself a good cup of tea or coffee and take an hour out? The lucky winner of the prize wordsearch last month was Mrs D Gregory of Sandford Road. Well done to you! Martin, Steve and I wish you a great month of June. Very Best Wishes,

Talking about wildlife with

Back to the seas of our grandparents’ days Right now, a network of Marine Protected Areas is being developed around our shores, with protection from the most damaging activities such as gravel extraction and scallop dredging. Most types of fishing, commercial and recreational activity will still be allowed, but there will be some new marine reserves, called Reference Areas, which will be protected from ALL damaging activities, giving them a chance to return to the rich seas of our grandparents’ days. These highly protected Reference Areas, small though they will be, are vital to the success of the network as a whole. They allow wildlife within them to return to a near-natural state, acting as benchmarks for understanding how human activities affect marine life, showing us what a healthy and undamaged sea is like – something we can hardly imagine at the moment. Older Dorset residents remember seeing schools of harbour porpoise from Dorset’s cliffs and catching large angel shark and common skate, both of which are now critically endangered. We hope that by s et t i n g a s id e s om e areas of the sea purely for wildlife we will see a return to the marine environment our greatgrandparents enjoyed. If we are to halt the centuries-long decline in our seas we need to establish Reference

WDD June 2011 page 8

Areas that are purely for the recovery of wildlife. They will undoubtedly affect some people who use the sea for their living or recreation and tough decisions will be needed. But if we do nothing, noone will benefit, least of all our local Dorset fishing communities. If we don’t act now there will be very little for our grand-children to enjoy. To find out more about the campaign for M arine Protected Areas, incl udin g Reference Areas, both in Dorset and throughout the UK, visit our website www.wildlifetrusts.org and click on Living Seas. Look out for the Petition Fish campaign this summer at Dorset Wildlife Trust centres and events and sign a scale to show your support for marine wildlife. It’s now or never for the future of our seas!

TOWN COUNCIL MEETING 16TH MAY 2011 The main business of the meeting was to form the memberships and chairmanships of the Council’s Standing Committees, sub-committees, groups and panels and also decide on its representatives on various community bodies. Two other items were on the agenda, however: Adopt-a-Payphone Scheme – Members of the Council discussed a proposal for Wareham Town Council to adopt the cash payphone (not the card use only phone) in North Street for purposes other than a payphone. This idea has apparently worked well in other communities so that these iconic and very well-loved items are retained by the community and used as mini-libraries, information booths etc, when they may otherwise be dismantled and lost forever on the street scene. In an age of mobile phones, cash payphones are getting little use, it seems, hence the scheme to adopt them for £1.00 by BT Payphones. The Council deferred this item until the next meeting of the Policy, Resources and Finance Committee in order for more information to be gathered and a final decision will then be made. Public Conveniences in Wareham – A letter from Purbeck District Council regarding various future options for public conveniences in Wareham, currently maintained by the District Council, was discussed. It was decided to form a small Town Council ‘public conveniences working party’ to look at the options in early June and report back to the District Council’s Policy Development Panel in due course. Wareham Town Council contact: Admin Office 01929 553006. Bookings taken for Corn Exchange, use of the Council Chamber for weddings/civil partnerships plus sports pitches at the Recreation Ground, Worgret Road. Website: www.wareham-tc.gov.uk

A graze through Upton Heath Upton heath is one of Dorset Wildlife Trusts most celebrated reserves, home to all 6 British reptiles, including a rare black adder. Now part of the reserve is undergoing changes to ensure its wildlife gets the best possible habitat to thrive in. Dorset Wildlife Trust will be using ponies and hardy Shetland cattle to graze newly acquired land in the centre of Upton Heath, bringing it into good condition for the rare wildlife that relies on this special habitat. Fences will be erected around a small section to the north of the old railway line to keep the animals from straying, with gates provided for walkers and bridleway users. Nigel Brooks, Urban and East Warden at Dorset Wildlife Trust, said: “Grazing heathland has been practiced for hundreds of years, and is the most natural and effective way of improving the land for wildlife. The cattle and ponies that we will be using are great at browsing through the scrub and grass that would otherwise take over the beautiful heathers and gorse that the wildlife here thrives on. They are also very domesticated and happy to be around people and dogs. The area’s access points are being maintained, and everyone is still welcome to enjoy this area of the reserve”.

facing position close to Poole Harbour protects it from the heavier snow experienced on other heaths. On Friday 1st July at 9pm, there will be a field trip to Upton Heath to look for nightjars, bats and to explore this reserve after hours. Meet at the end of Beacon Road off Pinesprings Road, Creekmoor, Poole. For more information, please contact Nigel Brooks or Andy Fale on 01202 692033.

ROYAL MARINES MEMORIAL at EMMETTS HILL, DORSET The Memorial was initiated following the IRA attack on the Royal Marines Barracks Deal, home and training centre for the Royal Marines Band Service in September 1989. The originator and organizer for the project was Colin Dishington, a Member of the Dorset Branch of the Royal Marines Association (RMA) (since renamed the Poole and District Branch). A suitable site was chosen which overlooks a training area used by the Royal Marines (RM) both during WWII and since plus it fitted the beauty and tranquility required for the memorial location. The land, which is within the boundary of the Enscombe estate, was freely given by the then owner David Scott (Lt Col Retd) and right of access to the site is written into the deeds of the tenant farmer. Details of the site are lodged and recorded with the estate land agents plus on the estate maps. Design of the memorial and the wording for the memorial slab was carried out and discussed by the RMA. It was decided to add to the initial Deal inscription such it remembered RM’s lost in all the conflicts from 1945-1990 including the Middle and Far East, Northern Ireland and the Falklands because many Members of the RMA had served or lost friends during that period and in those conflicts. In 2006 a new stone was added to remember the ongoing losses of Royal Marines in current conflicts and sadly over the years to come as they strive to bring peace in this our troubled world. The local quarry, owned by WJ Hayson & Sons which is ½ mile from the memorial was visited and the five large stones chosen as were the smaller ones for the bases and surrounds. The inscription and badge for memorial stone was cut by Hoare Bank’s Stonemasons of Bournemouth. With access to the site being across rough fields the quarry’s large fork lift was used to carry the main stones to the site, including the table which weighed ¾ ton, placing each stone on the prepared concrete foundation and bases. The foundations were dug by members of the RMA,

the building work by ‘Danny’ Daniels RMA with a mason from the quarry assisting to place the stones themselves. Work was completed by August 1990. Each year since the unveiling, a service has been conducted by the RMA at the memorial. The calls are sounded by a serving RM Bugler from the RM Band Service and rescue duties permitting, the Coastguard helicopter carries out a “flypast”, a custom carried on from when the Royal Navy helicopters were based at Portland. The original three bar wooden rail fence has been replaced by a Purbeck stone wall to blend in with the stone walls of the area and gives better protection to the garden which is maintained by volunteers from the Poole and District RMA. As the site is on the main coastal path many people pause to look at the memorial or as a resting point on their walk to enjoy the views; to the west Portland, Lulworth Cove and the cliffs or bays used for RM training, south to the sea and our links with the Royal Navy plus St Aldhelms Head, east to Durlston Head with the Isle of Wight in the far distance whilst inland to the north the rolling Purbeck Hills and the villages of Kingston and Worth Matravers. The ashes of RMA Members have also been scattered in the monument gardens and the families of those lost and resting elsewhere often visit the site, a truly peaceful and fitting memorial to the Members of the Royal Marines Family who have given their lives since WWII.

WAGGY TAILS RESCUE, is a registered charity based in Ferndown. They rescue and re-home dogs that have been abandoned, neglected or otherwise in need of a good home.

June Jewel Daisy is a Mastiff cross who is about seven years old. She is a very sweet dog that we rescued from the pound on Christmas Eve. She is full of character and loves to be loved. She has been waiting for the right home since Christmas!

NEW VENUE FOR THE FUN DOG SHOW In the past the annual dog show has been held in Kinson, but due to the closure of the park’s toilets, an alternative venue had to be found. So this year it will be held at the West Parley Memorial Hall and Field, Christchurch Road, West Parley BH22 8SQ. The date will be Saturday June 18th and doors open at 12.30pm but no need to register for classes ahead of time this year. All the usual fun and frolics including a parade of all the re homed dogs of the past (If you have a WT dog, please bring it along) also all the dogs needing homes will be there too. Fabulous food, children’s’ games, super prizes, so what more could you want? Free entry but limited parking so share transport if you can.

For more information call the office on 01202 875000!

The Purbeck Association of The National Trust We aim to raise money for the National Trust and, like all the ‘Supporter Groups’ we do this while enjoying ourselves. We have talks, outings and social events. The talks and outings are fairly self-explanatory, but what about social events? Basically we aim to do something where members have a bit more of a chance to chat and get to know each other. Our barbecue at Knoll Beach and our lunchtime fish & chips quiz have become annual favourites. Coming up later we have another of our themed meals (Greek this time), a tour of the RNLI headquarters, and a river trip. There are about twenty supporter groups in Wessex, and last year between us we raised almost £100,000 for the National Trust, simply by having an enjoyable time. When people join they find we can be very sociable, as all new members are invited to a cream tea at Knoll Beach Discovery Centre (see picture). There they can meet the Committee, and learn about some of the things that have been done with the money we raise. Our annual membership is great value at only £5, or £7.50 for a couple. If you’d like to get more out of your own National Trust membership (or your status as a Trust Volunteer) by joining us, call Membership Secretary Jay Burke on 423775 or see our website www.purbecknt.org.uk.

New service from Purbeck CAB We have developed a new partnership with the Wareham and Purbeck Branch of the Multiple Sclerosis Society. They have given us a grant to employ an adviser for one day a week over the next year to provide an advice service to their members who have MS, and their families and/or carers. The service is available to people in the area who have MS including those who are not members of the MS Society. The adviser is Phil Sands, and he can do home visits, or arrange to see people at one of the bureau’s locations. He can provide advice and assistance on a range of issues, including benefits, financial concerns, housing and employment. Call us on 01929 551913 if you would like to book a home visit or appointment. Our general advice service is open on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday 10am – 2pm at our office in Mill Lane Telephone advice available on 01929 551257, and email advice at: bureau@purbeckcab.cabnet.org.uk.

‘L’otter’ fun had celebrating the official launch of Otter Oasis at the Oceanarium, Bournemouth The official VIP launch event to celebrate the Oceanarium’s first-ever mammal display ‘Otter Oasis’ was a huge success, with more than 200 leading travel and tourism industry professionals, media and the Mayor of Poole, Cllr Chris Bulteel in attendance. Having taken place on Tuesday May 17, guests gathered to celebrate the launch of the new enclosure which has created a brand new experience for visitors and is now home to two Oriental small clawed otters called Bea and Buster. Guests enjoyed complimentary bubbly, delicious Koh Thai Tapas and had the opportunity to have a relaxing Oriental hand massage courtesy of Southbournebased Hush Holistics. Bea and Buster were full of excitement at the arrival of th e i r gu e st s an d p u t o n a gre at performance, swimming and playing in their new home. Oliver Buttling, Group Curator of the Oceanarium, said: “We had a fantastic turn out for the event. The otters were really playful and guests thoroughly enjoyed seeing them explore their enclosure. We’re now looking forward to continuing the celebrations with our family activity week at the end of the month. It’ll be an ideal opportunity for new and regular visitors to come and see Bea and Buster in their new home, while enjoying a fun day out.” A series of feeding sessions and talks will

WDD June 2011 page 36

take place throughout the week, packed with lots of interesting facts to learn about the furry friends, including how they play and juggle with rocks and pebbles and how they communicate using different calls, cries and instinctive sounds from their intelligent otter vocabulary. Otter feeding sessions are at 10.30am and 1pm daily. To complement the otter adventure, visitors can order otter cookies from the Offshore Café and can purchase otter souvenirs from The Cove gift shop to remember their trip, with a week-long special offer to take advantage of.
