Hello Wareham, Wool & Bere Regis! Wow, what great weather we have had! I hope you had a chance to get out into the garden and catch up with those things that just don’t seem to get done… We had a super time going down to the beach, having a meal out as well as spending time in our own garden for a change. Do use the businesses inside The Directory wherever you can. All of the people are local and ready to help you. From gardens to kitchens to dry cleaning. From aerials to computers, mobility scooters and haberdashery supplies! We have just the people for the job! Please say you found them inside The Wareham District Directory. I love to hear that you and the advertisers are happy. There is of course our useful index on page 38 where you will find all of the advertisers and local clubs who are in the magazine. The lucky winner of the meal for two at the Kings Arms at Stoborough was Kay Paynter! Well done and we hope you have a good evening out. Please do take a look at our website www.warehamdistrictdirectory.co.uk where you will find a competition to win a Balloon Flight for two! It is easy… give it a go! You can also follow us on Facebook at www.facebook.com/warehamdistrictdirectory. Add a comment or send us any local photos especially if you have an event. We will be delighted to see them! Martin, Steve and I wish you a lovely month of May. Very Best Wishes,

Debbie

Low-cost tips to transform your garden in time for the spring... Is your garden looking very muddy or untidy or perhaps you’re looking for a more maintenance-free area to relax in when the weather improves? Local stone merchant Suttles has the answer! With its array of shingle, decorative stone chippings or wood chippings, you can transform your garden from as little as £29 per tonne. Director Joe Paine explains “recycled woodland mulch can be laid on top of your soil in your borders, which not only looks great but also suppresses weeds and deters slugs and snails. Or, if you’re looking to lay down a pathway through your garden or an area to sit out in, all that is required is a roller or plate compactor, a wheelbarrow, a shovel, some geotextile and some gravel or shingle (we have plenty in our range to choose from!). Whilst the ground is being prepared, you can put the excavated material into bags, which Suttles can easily pick up for you. Suttles can also deliver the shingle or other aggregate at the same time to make life a whole lot

easier and save on costs. You’d be surprised what a difference these can make to your garden!” And from now until the 30th April 2011, Suttles are offering 10% off decorative chippings when you order through their online stone depot at www.suttles.co.uk. Just enter the code WHORC10 at the checkout to receive your discount. For further details about the products, prices or delivery, go to the online stone depot at www.suttles.co.uk or call 01929 439444.

We cover every aspect of wall or floor tiling , as well as internal and external decorating. We use high quality materials. The majority of our work comes from recommendations and references can be supplied. Please contact us for a no obligation quotation

Jurassic Jaunt: Worth Matravers, Priests Way An excellent 6 mile walk with great views. taking in the coast and pleasant downland walking around Worth Matravers. How to get there: - Grid Reference 974777; Turn right just after Corfe Castle for Kingston. After Kingston, follow the road for about a mile and turn right for Worth Matravers. The car park is on your right just before the village. There is a small parking fee. Information: Toilets are available in the car park. Walk details: Turn right as you leave the car park, turn left around the base of the Square and Compass pub (100 metres) and proceed along the road for about ½ mile. On the right of the road, cross the stile with the finger post saying Priests Way. Cross the next two stiles within about 100 metres and proceed across the fields, across 2 further stiles until you reach a track Follow this track for about ¼ mile and you will see a stile to your right signposted Seacombe and the Eastington National Trust area. Go over the stile and follow the path down the valley to Seacombe (do not follow the left fork to Dancing Ledge after the second stile). The path to Winspit is about 100 metres back from the cliffs on the right. Go over the stile into the woods, up through the w oods and follow the coastal path to Winspit quarries (2/3 mile).

As you drop down into Winspit, the path is not, as it seems, directly across the track into the base of the quarries. You need to turn right up the track for about 70 metres, then left up around the top of the quarry and onto the St Aldhelms/St Albans Head Coastguard’s station (2/3 mile). At Winspit you can also proceed directly up the track to Worth if you wish (1 mile, about 3 miles in total). At the Coastguard station, turn right along the track to Worth Matravers and walk through the village to the car park (2 miles). Our next guided walk is Sunday 29 May – Durdle Door and Lulworth Cove, 12:00 start. All information and future walk dates are online at www.jurassicjaunts.co.uk or call 07790 474 478. For more information on this walk or any of the others available around this fascinating part of the county, check the Jurassic Jaunts website at : www.jurassicjaunts.co.uk Anvil Point From Seacombe

New Lengthsman for Wareham Town As reported in a previous issue, the Town Council intended to recruit a Lengthsman utilising part funding obtained from Dorset County Council. I am pleased to report that Mr Keith Burt was successful at interview and has been appointed from Tuesday 3rd May. Keith will take over various ‘outdoor’ duties currently carried out by the County Council and some tasks to augment the District Council’s responsibilities. A prime task will be to carry out much needed weed killing in the town and follow up dead weeds to remove them from site at a later stage. This follows a meeting of the Amenities Committee on 27th April 2011 when certain priorities were set. We hope that our Lengthsman will become a familiar sight in Wareham to local residents and I am sure that there will be plenty of work to keep him busy and ensure the town remains clean, tidy and free from certain eyesores that let us all down.

Clockwinder Retires – Thank You to Terry At the Council meeting of 18th April, retiring Town Hall Clockwinder Mr Terry Miles gave a presentation on Wareham’s clock and his memories of winding and maintaining it, followed by a presentation from the Mayor of a gift and framed certificate to commemorate 21 years as ‘Master Clockwinder’. On behalf of the Council and all residents of Wareham, we wish you a happy retirement, Terry, you deserve it! Pictured right is Terry with Mayor Eric Osmond and photo of the Clock at the Town Hall.

Wareham in Bloom Project – ‘The Sword in the Stone’ – North Causeway Roundabout A recent development which caused some excitement (and a little controversy from detractors) is the ‘Sword in the Stone’ feature at the North Causeway roundabout. This is a major Wareham in Bloom Committee project and a first attempt at upgrading a roundabout. Following an idea submitted by committee member Dorothy Carr, landscape artist Jenny Waterhouse worked up a colour sketch of the design which features a large Saxon sword embedded in Purbeck Stone. This was selected as very appropriate for Wareham. It is not intended to be King Arthur’s ‘Excalibur’ but is an exact replica of a Saxon sword which was found buried in silt when the South Bridge was rebuilt in 1927. This sword is now in the Dorset County Museum. King Arthur, largely a Medieval legend embellished from references to a Romano-Celtic leader, is not associated with Wareham, however the Saxons were here for hundreds of years and it seems fitting that we should remember our own recorded history. The

Find us online at www.warehamdistrictdirectory.co.uk major work is now complete, with an earthwork wall to represent the Saxon walled town and a blue Welsh slate River Frome all surrounded by newly laid turf. As I write, planting up will take place in early May with official Launch Day on Tuesday 10th May at 11.00 am, attended by the Mayor and Committee members and anyone else who wishes to be there. The Wareham in Bloom Committee is deeply grateful to all the local sponsors and contractors who freely gave of their time and materials to build the new feature, all at no expense to the Wareham Town Council taxpayer, plus Viridor PR of Taunton who donated £1,000 towards the sword and other materials. Someone has suggested the roundabout should now be called ‘Saxon Roundabout’ - and we do have a Saxon Close not too far away from it. Certainly beats ‘Excalibur Roundabout’ in my humble opinion! Local Elections May 2011 – Town Council Meetings The full list of your newly elected Wareham Town Councillors along with their contact details will be published in the next edition of the ‘Directory’ and will also be available with photos on the Council website: www.wareham-tc.gov.uk and on the Council’s notice boards. Most meetings are open to the public, these are publicised in the Purbeck Gazette and on the website so please do come along if you are interested in any issue. There is also a public participation time with a chance to speak on any topic under discussion or on any issue pertaining to Wareham Town. Wareham Town Council contact: Admin Office 01929 553006. Bookings taken for Corn Exchange, use of the Council Chamber for weddings/civil partnerships plus sports pitches at the Recreation Ground, Worgret Road. Website: www.wareham-tc.gov.uk

You probably know of Corfe Castle Model Village and you may have been there. But, did you know all there was to do? Did you also know that Corfe Castle Model Village is actually three attractions in one! There is of course the model village but also there is the tea room and gift shop. What’s more, you do not have to pay to go in to the model village to enjoy the tea room or, of course, the gift shop. The tea room and its lovely food can be experienced as much as you like. If you do pay to go into the model village, you can eat out on the terrace or, indeed, take your food to picnic out into the gardens. The model village has been a landmark since opening in 1966. As a family run business, the current owners, Ed and Emily Paris, have kept the tradition going for the last nine years. So, lets talk about the tea room. This is in a 17th century courtyard setting and as I said, this can be enjoyed without paying to go into the model village. There are scrummy daily specials, cream teas with home baked scones, Italian coffee and delicious cakes! As much local produce as possible is used; Craig Farm Dairy, Blackmore Vale clotted cream, local butcher from Parkstone with meat from Dorchester, Jessica’s farmhouse cakes, Purbeck ice cream, free range eggs from Furzebrook, Bridport gourmet pies, M & J Seaford, Dorset Piddle Brewery, coffee by Italian Connection of Bournemouth and Dorset Tea by Keith Spicer of Blandford! On the menu are healthy options, gluten free options and the children's choices. Its home cooking too, cooked on the premises and even adaptable to suit your needs. There are also great cooked breakfasts!

We had the very fortunate chance to experience a lovely range of what Ed and Emily had on offer in the tea room and the tranquil gardens and model village. The food was delicious and our children were well catered for, between running about the lawns. Having taken the time to take it all in we can honestly say that anyone could spend a leisurely time whiling away a few hours and chilling out. If you have children then great - there is plenty to keep them occupied and they can run around freely. This fits perfectly with Ed and Emily's purpose to provide a relaxed atmosphere with good quality local food at reasonable prices. Nothing is too much trouble! As an extra note, the premises is available for special events - weddings, birthdays, anniversaries. All are welcome too - families, dogs, walkers and cyclists. Also group visits welcome. So, pop by and have some lovely lunch (or breakfast) and enjoy the view with a nice sit down or nice stroll.

The Good Book Read any good books lately? As Summer approaches many people take to sitting in the sunshine, sunglasses firmly attached, reading a good book. One of the dangers of our modern technological age is that books seem to be going out of fashion. I’m glad that there are still many people about campaigning to keep our libraries open. I use a computer to ‘google’ information, but nothing can replace the feel of leafing through pages reading a book I can hold in my hand. There are so many different types of books and hundreds of different styles of writing. According to Google research there are 129 million different book titles currently in the world! But in my view there is one book that stands out above all the rest… The Bible. It’s not just a book to be read and absorbed. It comes alive as we allow its principles and truths to be applied in our daily lives. That is often something we cannot do in our own strength and so we need the help and guidance of God’s Holy Spirit. The Bible was not written to satisfy our curiosity but to transform our lives and make us more like Jesus. Only as we prayerfully ask God to work out His truths within us do we discover that it has a dynamic of life-changing proportions! Have you read the Bible lately? It is actually a library in itself of some 66 books. It can be a daunting task opening up the pages of the Bible. May I suggest that you begin with the one of the Gospel accounts? That will introduce you to the life and ministry of Jesus as well as pointing back to the Old Testament and its many promises and prophecies. My prayer is that the reading of God’s Word will enrich and encourage you in your life. We regularly look through a passage of the Word on Sunday mornings and have a more information discussional Bible study on Tuesday nights. Why not pay us a visit? With love in Jesus, Pastor Jim Morris The Manse Flat Butt Lane Bere Regis Tel: 01929 471270 News in Brief – Thank you to all those who attended our recent Mothers Day Service. We were able to distribute small pots of primroses to all the ladies present. And thank you to those who celebrated Easter with us – we trust the message of Calvary love and resurrection hope will linger on throughout the year. This month on Sunday 22nd May at 10am we have a missionary service and our guest speaker will be Nick Wilson from SASRA (The Soldiers’ and Airmen’s’ Scripture Readers Association). Today the SASRA team is able to work alongside the service chaplains in visiting the troops at home and abroad in their living and working quarters (see photo). They are on hand to provide pastoral care and just offer the hand of friendship to service men and women and their families who face the rigours of modern life in the armed forces. Come and find out more information on this Christian work. Finally we continue to distribute free of charge our monthly Chapel Magazine and also go from door to door around the village with the Good News Paper. We look forward to meeting you at some time. Free Booklet offer! At Easter we made available a small publication written by John Blanchard and entitled JESUS: DEAD OR ALIVE? This book examines the evidence, assesses the alternatives, unpacks the conspiracy theories and shows why there is only one convincing answer to the question. Copies of these are still available – just give Pastor Jim a call on 01929 471270 or email him at jimjan.morris192@yahoo.co.uk. SUNDAY WORSHIP EVERY SUNDAY at 10.00am & Junior Church for the youngsters The Chapel Toddlers Group - Mondays 1.30pm - 3pm provides a time for mums & carers to relax and get together as the toddlers interact in two large play areas of the Chapel. If you think this might be for you do come along! You will be most welcome. The STS Youth Group - Mondays 6.30pm – 8.00pm is for 12-18 year olds who want to know more about the Christian faith. There are currently 20 regular youngsters who attend. The Bible Fellowship Group Tuesdays - 7.30pm – 9.15pm– want to know more about the Bible and prayer in a friendly atmosphere? Held in the Manse in Butt Lane.

Talking about wildlife with

Wild Woodland Flowers Many wild flowers are at the peak of their blossom in May, so it is the perfect time to take a walk in the woods and enjoy this colourful display. The much-loved bluebell is for many people the essence of spring. Bluebells form a dazzling purple-blue carpet across ancient woodland, their bell shaped flowers appearing from late April to June. Bluebells can be a dominant species, covering most of the woodland ground, and they also grow in meadows and hedgerows. Although common and widespread, they have been in decline in recent years due to habitat loss and competition with the nonnative Spanish Bluebell. Growing near or amongst the bluebells, ramsons, or wild garlic, provide a striking contrast with star-shaped white flowers and long green leaves. It is common across Britain, growing mainly in deciduous woodland, and you might detect its characteristically strong garlic scent before even seeing the flower itself. Ramsons bloom through May and June and, like the bluebell, can have rather an overwhelming presence. The lesser celandine flowers earlier than the bluebells and ramsons, but is still around in May with its cheerful, buttercup-yellow flowers. It is an important early source of nectar and pollen for bumblebees and can make a cheerful yellow carpet through a wood in April.

Together these and other woodland flowers such as the wood anemone, create a spectacular display for us to enjoy in the spring. Make sure not to miss it, as they mostly bloom for a short period only, before the tree canopies above fill in, blocking out the sunlight. Street Parties are being organised as a national event over the Queen’s Birthday weekend. Wareham will hold its own party in East Street, near the Town Hall, o n S u n d a y a f t e r n o on 1 2 t h J u n e . Wareham Town Council supported Councillor Russell in his endeavours to form a local committee to organise the event and is donating £300 to kick things off. Dorset Cream Teas will be available. The street party, entertainment, fun and games among celebrities will be free, although donations are requested. It is hoped to include a number of Legion and other local veterans who have served their country and are being assisted by the Legion. Bovington Garrison will provide a Panther armoured patrol vehicle and crew for this event – the crew and vehicle coming from the Gunnery School at Lulworth. A desperate need has currently arisen for specialist care for the extreme injuries in flicted on servin g troop s. With donations received, the Legion intends building, equipping and staffing 5 purpose built ‘Battle Back Challenge or Recovery Centres’ around the country with one likely in Dorset. The total cost for this is estimated to be around £53 Million - on top of the £37 Million obtained in 2010 for the annual Poppy Appeal. The

The Great Poppy Party is a super idea to celebrate the Legion’s 90th birthday when we all intend having great family fun but we are not forgetting that we need to raise some vital capital for this important project that will help our current servicemen and women adjust to life back home and have some sort of future”. He added that “Wareham has, and always will, stand shoulder to shoulder with our courageous servicemen and women”.

The Purbeck Association of The National Trust Last month saw the turn of the ‘year’ for our members. We finished our season of monthly talks at our AGM and started our season of monthly summer outings with a trip to Lacock. The AGM gave us a chance to look back at some of the things that we’ve done with the money we raise at our talks, outings and social events. In the last year the things we’ve helped provide include a defibrillator at Knoll Beach, heavy duty gardening tools for volunteers working on the local heathland (see picture), equipment to help children experience stone carving at Corfe Castle, and some fireproof aprons for chefs at local hogroasts that the Trust are proposing to hold. We’ve also given money to help with the design and manufacture of a giant game that will help children understand more about Corfe Castle. This month our activities include a coffee morning at Walford Mill, a trip to Exbury Gardens and a trailer ride along the Studland peninsula. Our annual membership is great value at only £5, or £7.50 for a couple. If you’d like to get more out of your own National Trust membership (or your status as a Trust Volunteer) by joining us, call Membership Secretary Jay Burke on 423775 or see our website www.purbecknt.org.uk.
