Dear Wareham, Wool and Bere Regis! I cannot believe it is November already. Really this year has flown by like never before. I am sure Hayden our 6 year old son wouldn’t agree with me, so I guess I must be getting on a bit! The new kittens which were born last month are truly gorgeous. Lydia, the Mum has been a delight to watch. One day the little black and white kitten, named Fifi by Hayden, tried to make a bee line for the door to go outside. Lydia looked at her and gave her a right talking to, looking at the door then turning to the kitten. It was quite amazing to see. Needless to say, Fifi turned around and went straight back into the room. Maybe I can learn from her! Well we have a great Wareham District Directory for you this month, with dinner offers for the Christmas season approaching, electricians, hairdressers, fireplaces, tiles, bathrooms, Christmas turkeys in fact you name it and I am sure you will find the right person to help you. Please mention The Wareham District Directory when making any calls or enquiries. This makes all the difference to the magazine and keeps it in circulation. The lucky winner of the prize wordsearch last month was Mrs Y Talbot. Well done and we hope you enjoy your meal. Did you all have a good Halloween? We had a great evening with children and adults all dressing up including face paints! Sometimes we just need an excuse to let out hair down, hey. I hope you all have a great month of November. Very Best Wishes,

Debbie

Suttles Raises the Roof! Suttle Natural Stone, part of the Suttles group, has just launched a new Purbeck roof tiling service with larger capacity and shorter turnaround times. Purbeck roof tiles are usually in short supply and there has traditionally been a long waiting list for the material (sometimes even months), which are ideal for conservation area building projects requiring materials in keeping with other properties in the area. However, Suttle Natural Stone has now dedicated part of its sawing workshop facility in Swanage solely to the production of natural Purbeck roof tiles to meet demand and supply clients with Purbeck roof tiles from stock with reduced production times. Suttles has just supplied 285m2 of natural Purbeck roof tiles, sourced from its own Purbeck quarry, to local developer A.J.S. Developments for two newlyconstructed semi detached cottages in Bell Street, Swanage. The roof tiles are ideal for this development as they are sympathetic to other properties in this conservation area, having met with local authority approval. Suttle Natural Stone’s quarry manager Nick Crocker stated ‘I am very proud of our roof tiles – they’re great quality, authentic and look fantastic, too! As well our Purbeck stone being quarried and produced locally, it

WDD November 2010 page 7

has superb wearing and durability properties, making it the ideal material for building and landscaping projects.’ Director of A.J.S. Developments Richard Wylie added ‘We were extremely happy with the availability of the tiles and the efficient service from Suttles. The tiles look great and blend in perfectly with the rest of the conservation area.’ Suttles has supplied Purbeck stone and other natural stone products for over forty years. The Purbeck stone is quarried from their site in Swanage and is exported all over the world for use as rockery, walling, paving, building stone, polished flooring stone, roof tiles and more. For further information go to www.suttles.co.uk or call 01929 423576. The Cottages can be viewed by appointment with local Estate Agents Corben & Sons.

Celebrating 30th anniversary year with the completion of prestigious London project N e w t o n F o r g e c e l e b r a t es i t s 3 0 t h Anniversary with the completion of their latest prestigious project for the Royal Courts of Justice, The Strand. It is a welcome treat in these difficult times to hear of a local company celebrating their 30th anniversary. Especially, when the anniversary coincides with the completion of yet another prestigious project. Newton Forge has grown substantially since its humble beginnings in the North Dorset market town of Sturminster Newton, where Ian & Karen Ring set up a forge at his Uncle’s Farm. Now, 30 years later, it is a leading specialist in the restoration of wrought iron, cast ironwork, traditional and contemporary design with an impressive list of clients including the National Trust, English Heritage, Hampton Court, Windsor Great Park, and Tower Bridge.. to name but a few. One of Newton Forge’s latest projects has been for the Royal Courts of Justice in The Strand, London. Director Ian Ring explains, “This impressive building was opened by Queen Victoria in 1882 and the imposing gothic gates and fences have stood the test of time. Our project involved carefully restoring and repairing sections, making and installing new fencing in the Cary Street area and adapting fences and 3 entrances, such as the Judges main gates, to meet modern security demands.”

unrepaired, “Shrapnel damage from the Second World War has bent and split vertical members near the West Green entrance. This has been preserved as an historic reminder” explains Ian. Newton Forges quiet dedication and skill has built a company with a strong focus on large scale restoration, conservation and building projects. Ian reflects on the past 30 years, “It has been a real privilege to work on some of the most architecturally important buildings in this country. I am very proud of our team who understand their work is part of our heritage and apply their passion and skill to create the best”. He added, “We will be celebrating the 30 year anniversary with a party for our great team”. Newton Forge is currently working on a number of prestigious projects which will leave a legacy for future generations to admire. Tel: 01258 472407 Email: mail@newtonforge.co.uk Newton Forge Ltd. As well as carefully matched wrought and cast ironwork, the modern security demands included installing over 150metre of weld mesh, a turnstile and balancing historical integrity with modern card entry readers. However, there was one area they left

Jurassic Jaunt: Swanage East Route 1 Area: Distance: Difficulty: Access Restrictions?

Swanage 2½ miles Medium No

A 2½ mile walk with 2 short strenuous sections but this walk is well worth the effort with great views of Swanage and Poole Harbour. How to get there: Grid Reference 022809; On approaching Corfe Castle from Wareham, turn left for Studland just after the National Trust car park. After 3 ½ miles, just before Purbeck Golf Club, take the right turn, signposted Swanage 2 ½ miles. At the next junction, turn right for Swanage and park in the lay-bye with the large stone plinth saying ‘Welcome to Swanage’. Information:- Toilets are not available here. Walk details:On the left, near the start of the lay-bye, take the small swing gate. Fork right here and take the steep 100 metre ascent to the level path. Turn right and continue along the path for 400 metres. Cross the stile taking you into the National trust Ballard Down area and continue ahead, giving you excellent views across Swanage to your right. Avoid any forks to your left and after another 400 metres, ensure you drop down through a small tree arch to meet another path (here you will have a gate to your right to Swanage). Turn left here and ascend towards the Ridgeway of Ballard Down (250 metres). You have seats available at regular intervals for resting and taking in the views across Swanage and the bay.

WDD November 2010 page 22

As the path levels off at the top, turn sharp left and walk up to t he top of the Ridgeway. At the Ridgeway you will get a panoramic view of Poole Harbour as well as Swanage to your left. You now need to turn left and head along the Ridgeway towards the masts in the distance. Follow the path through the gate and drop down, past the Obelisk and follow the path down to the road. Cross the road carefully and turn left, walking down the grass verge for about 300 metres. For the following 300 metres, you will need to walk on the right-hand side of the road until you meet the road junction on your right. Cross the road into the small open area (signpost here for the Coast path 1 ¾ miles), go over the stile, and after about 20 metres, follow the footpath sign to your right. Continue along the path for 400 metres, through the gate, and about 30 metres after the gate, fork right and follow the path down to the lay-by. Please look at the site for future walks www.jurassicjaunts.co.uk or call 07790 474 478 for more details.

Based in Wimborne Minster, the charity has its local representative as Brian Barker, proprietor of quaint and attractive Georgian Gems in Swanage High Street. Since the Trust was established in 1981, over 550 students have been helped to reach their goals in the field of music, goals which they may not otherwise achieve. Rotary Club of Wareham A LIGHT AND A MEMORY FOR CHRISTMAS Rotary Club of Wareham will once again be erecting a Tree of Light in the grounds of Wareham Hospital in time for Christmas. Throughout the year we all keep fond and precious memories of those who are no longer with us and Christmas, in particular, is a very special time for such memories. Our commemorative tree, illuminated with hundreds of tiny “Lights of Remembrance” will be set up during December and will remain until Twelfth Night and we hope that it will lift the hearts of patients, staff and visitors over the Christmas period. During November we will be delivering Tree of Light leaflets to enable those who wish to sponsor a light in memory of a loved one to do so. If you do not get a leaflet, donations can be made by sending a cheque payable to The Rotary Club of Wareham to Mr R Smith, Forest Gate,

WDD November 2010 page 28

Bere Heath, Bere Regis, BH20 7NS (Tel: 01929 471339) or by making a donation on line through our web site www.warehamrotary.co.uk. Additionally, a short lighting up ceremony will take place in the hospital grounds on Saturday 11th December at 7pm. The Wareham Town Band will be playing from 6.45pm. The names of those being remembered will be recorded in a Book of Remembrance, which will be available at the lighting up ceremony and then kept at the hospital. After the lighting up ceremony tea/coffee and mince pies will be available by courtesy of the Hospital League of Friends. All money raised will be divided equally between Wareham Hospital and Macmillan Cancer Support in Dorset. Look out for your leaflet and we look forward to seeing you at the lighting up ceremony on 11th December.

The Purbeck Association of The National Trust What a marvellous sight greeted us at Barrington Court on our last outing of the year. We’d thought that there might be some colour left in the herbaceous borders designed by the famous Gertrude Jekyll, but as well as that we found this unexplained display of brightly coloured umbrellas. The house itself was fascinating, being the first ever (and very nearly the last) house acquired by the National Trust. Our outings are now finished and we’re into our winter programme of talks and social events. In November we have a talk about travels in Kathmandu and India’s Golden Triangle, as well as a Cheese & Wine Evening. All this takes place to help make membership of the National Trust more enjoyable, whilst raising funds for the Trust. Just recently we’ve paid for some extra education equipment at Corfe Castle. This will give children a chance to try their hands at stone carving, and learn about the techniques that were used to build the castle. If you’d like to get more out of your own National Trust membership (or your status as a Trust Volunteer) by joining us, call Membership Secretary Jay Burke on 423775 or see our website www.purbecknt.org.uk.

Mrs Matthews’s Mongrel by Judie Jones Mr Matthews never wanted children or pets. So Mrs Matthews was astonished to be presented with a tiny golden bundle of fluff on her 70th birthday and even more astonished when two days later Mr Matthews dropped dead. Whilst singing Abide With Me, Mrs Matthews could only wonder if Babe, for that is what she’d called the puppy, was feeling lonely on his own and whether she would arrive home after the internment to puddles or worse. Babe, an offspring of unknown parentage, thrived until at six months was the size of a Shetland pony with feet like dinner plates. His head resembled a Dexter Bull and he smiled, or some said snarled, like a Rottweiler. His appetite was huge, consuming one large tin of Best Beefy Chunks a day, as well as many tit bits. He slept alongside Mrs Matthews at night, which as he grunted and snored with regularity, was much the same as when Mr Matthews had shared the marital bed. Babe adored children. He’d sit in the park watching them at play; allowing them to pat, squeeze, cuddle and generally maul him, whilst Mrs Matthews looked proudly on. Babe’s favourites lived next door. Single mother of eight, nicknamed “falls easy” by the locals, permanently had one damp bundle clamped to her breast; in her cavernous womb another ‘mistake’ awaited emergence into the welfare state, whilst the remainder of the squalid tribe milled around. Babe would hang, like a giant fleece, over the dividing fence, watching every movement. “Falls easy” admitted that when the odd father came to claim visiting rights, she was never sure if she handed over the right child. Babe did not like men. When out with Mrs Matthews, any male that came within distance, would be seriously goosed. This caused huge annoyance, embarrassment and occasionally a frisson of delight to the recipients. His favourite trick was to lie behind the front wall and when a man passed by, would leap up at the gate, emitting blood curdling yowls. The waiting list for cardiac surgery grew longer. ‘He’ll have to go,’ said the Mayor after Babe attempted to remove the buttons from his fly. ‘Should be put down,’ said the Town Clerk. ‘Slap an

43 ASBO on him,’ suggested the Planning Officer. ‘Perhaps aversion therapy,’ suggested the local dog handler. Mrs Matthews was devastated and unsure what to do. Loud screams emerged from next door. ‘My baby’s gone,’ shrieked a distraught “falls easy”. The police arrived and with Vicks smeared liberally under their noses, they searched the house and garden. No sign of the infant. A search of the village was organised. Satisfied that her neighbour was in the safe hands of a female liaison officer, Mrs Matthews took Babe for his afternoon walk. Walking towards the embankment, she heard loud calls of alarm and ran to investigate. There, crawling up the middle of the railway line was the missing child. Great consternation and hysteria followed the obvious sound of the London to Glasgow express, which was about to round the bend. Immediately, Babe slipped his collar, galloped full pelt down the embankment and without stopping, hurtled across the railway line, grabbing the dank infant in his cavernous jaws and raced to the other side as the express thundered through. Babe was a hero. His picture was on the front page of the tabloids. The RSPCA awarded him a medal for bravery and a minor royal was despatched to make the presentation. On the platform, Babe stood proudly between the duchess and the mayor. His eyes flicked several times towards the nether regions of the mayor; a nasty grin on his face, but the aversion therapy kicked in. ‘Smile please.’ The cameras flashed. Babe was determined to have the last word. With one last leer at the mayor, he calmly cocked his leg.

Taking the plunge for Jesus! I am encouraged this month by the fact that there are a growing number of teenagers looking for answers to life’s question in the Bible. In our own Chapel this increase is not huge, but it is an increase – and in an age when many young people are being encouraged to ‘do their own thing’ it is reassuring to learn that many want God to be at the centre of their lives. At least two this month in our own Chapel will be taking part in a Service of believer’s baptism. They will be sharing their testimony to God’s saving grace in their lives before being baptized by total immersion in accordance with Scripture. This act of obedience will not turn them into Christians but it will be their way of identifying with the death, burial and resurrection of the One they are now following. In Paul’s letter to the Romans, chapter 6 he uses the terms death, burial and resurrection when describing water baptism. And basically these young people will be declaring publicly that they are willing to die to self, having had their sins forgiven through the death of Christ on the cross. Their old lives have been buried and in Christ they have new life. This is not just a way of saying “I’m turning over a new leaf and starting again”. It is saying “I am a brand new person in Christ and by His grace and with His help I will grow into that new life”. It is saying in effect, “My life is under new management”. I made that commitment in my own life forty-seven years ago and have never regretted it. I am still learning and growing in Him. I am still making many mistakes. But I know the promises He gave to me then are still valid today and I have a deep assurance of eternal security in Him. Are you willing to step out in faith and trust Christ in this way? Find our more about real faith at our regular Sunday Morning Worship Services 10.00am here in the Bere Regis Chapel in Butt Lane. We are sure God will meet anyone more than half way if He is sought in sincerity. In fact He went all the way to meet you in your need when He sent His only Son, Jesus Christ, to die on the cross of Calvary – taking your sin upon Himself and ensuring your forgiveness should you reach out to Him. For more information about the Bere Regis Congregational Church - contact Pastor Jim Morris on 01929 471270
