Dear Wareham, Wool & Bere Regis, Wow what fantastic weather we have had for this time of year! The beaches were packed… in October! I am sure it will all get a bit cooler now, but I have to say I like the changing seasons, changing the clothes in the wardrobe and curling up by the fire with a good movie. Then having the summer... whenever it happens these days... to look forward to. We have just had a very busy weekend putting the magazines together and in between making an air raid shelter with our 7 year old son for a project at school! The whole class is really enjoying this topic and learning a lot. Hayden was horrified at the prospect of being evacuated and is fascinated with the ‘real story’ of a girl this happened to. “It really happened Mummy!” he exclaimed, “I wouldn’t like that!” I think he appreciates his ’luxury lifestyle’ of DS, Xbox, TV and Wii a little more now! So, back to the house and all that needs to be done… maybe it is time for the plumbing to be checked before the winter months settle in, a new carpet to impress the in-laws or a loft conversion to give you more space. Don’t forget you can treat yourself too… with a fish pedicure spa, a meal out or a round of golf. Here in The Wareham District Directory we have all manner of businesses and tradespeople to help you. They are all local to you so do give them a call. These calls are really appreciated and make all the difference. The lucky winner of the Mantovani DVD and two tickets for the performance is Mr G. Noyle! This month the prize is a meal for two at the Kings Arms in Stoborough. Good luck with that and have a great month of October! Best Wishes,
Debbie

Feet Feel Fresh Following Fabulous Fish! Having many childhood memories of the times I have swum in lakes and rivers to have unknown things nibbling in the water, the thought of fish feeding on feet did not immediately get linked to pleasure… However, when Debbie and her sister, Sue, visited Clare Aburrow and her Fabulous Fish at the Courtyard Centre in Lychett Minster, they were in for a real treat! An organic alternative to a standard pedicure, the unique skin treatment massages and removes dead skin from the feet using the Garra Rufa fish also known as ‘Doctor Fish’. The fish have tiny toothless suction-cupped mouths that enable them to gently lift away dead skin, leaving the healthy skin to grow. The treatment is totally painless and users experience a relaxing tingling sensation across their feet - the results are smoother, tingly feet. Owner Clare says: “We welcome all ages to come and experience this totally natural treatment and see the benefits for themselves. Not only will it revitalise your feet but it’s a great way to relax. In addition The Courtyard Centre itself has the advantage of easy, level parking, an interesting range of other retailers and services and a welcoming cafe. “Our spa systems are fitted with individual filters and sterilising units, meaning our water is fresh and clean all day every day.” The spa itself is small and private (no huge shop window!) and can be booked for small hen and birthday parties. The Garra Rufa are used to help treat patients suffering from various skin disorders, including psoriasis and eczema, since the fish will eat and remove any dead skin.
WDD October 2011 page 8
The treatment costs £10 for 15 minutes or £20 for 30 minutes. This includes initial foot wash and application of pedicure lotion afterwards. Both Debbie and Sue said the fish tickled and tingled their feet as they moved around doing their “business”. Their feet definitely felt fresh, soft and smooth afterwards. So go on, treat yourselves or someone you love to a fish pedicure spa at Fabulous Fish! The Courtyard Centre Huntick Road Lytchett Minster BH16 6BA

Town Council Meeting 20th September 2011 Proposed Changes to Purbeck Core Strategy – Worgret Road Development Around 40 members of the public were in attendance at the meeting. A full 30 minute public participation time allowed the Council to hear comments from nine people opposed to a large supermarket at the Worgret Road development and use of green belt land in any consideration of changes to the Purbeck Core Strategy, prior to its submission by Purbeck District Council later in the year. Following public participation, Senior Planning Officer Steve Tapscott briefed the Town Council and emphasised that the District Council had proposed certain changes to the pre-submission document but had already rejected any plans for a supermarket. The Council was obliged under Government directives to provide housing at the Worgret Road site - 50% of which would be affordable housing. There would be two public consultations with displays on the proposed changes on Tuesday 27th September, 5-8pm and Saturday 1st October 2-5pm, both at the Corn exchange, Town Hall. The Town Council deferred its own consultation response to a meeting of the Planning/Transport Committee on 10th October. Police Presentation - Inspector Tracey Baker, Purbeck Neighbourhood Inspector Tracey Baker, Purbeck Neighbourhood Inspector since March 2011, introduced herself to Council and presented details of the crime rate in Purbeck. ‘Acquisitive crime’ had risen as had marine crime e.g. theft of or from vessels, in line with national levels, however she was pleased to report that there had been a recent and significant improvement and the figures were now stabilising. It was very important to report any crime and members of the public were encouraged to do so at all times. Protection of property was stressed, together with curtailment of anti-social behaviour by youths by means of a community link to the PACT organisation. Regarding police numbers, Inspector Baker was pleased to state that Wareham and Purbeck had come out well after a recent review and officer levels were up to strength, while there was no risk to Wareham’s police station/local enquiries office under the review. The main focus was on protecting the front line of policing and on the victims of crime and she was ensuring that these issues would be brought forward to the local Safer Neighbourhood Team. During a question and answer session which followed, it was stressed that many incidents were simply not being reported and everyone was surged to come forward and report the details. Inspector Baker gave details of the new 101 telephone number for the reporting of non-emergency crimes which went live in Dorset the day before the meeting. Details are as follows: Reporting non-emergency crimes using 101: 101 is the number to call when you want to contact your local police when it's less urgent than 999. It is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Call 101 to contact the police to report less urgent crime and disorder or to speak to your local officers. For example, call 101: if your car has been stolen, if your property has been damaged, if you suspect drug use or dealing in your local area, to report a minor traffic accident, to give the police information about crime in your area or to speak to the police about a general enquiry Committee Reports: Wareham in Bloom – Councillor Osmond reported on his attendance with the Town Clerk at the South and South East in Bloom awards. He was disappointed that Wareham had received a Silver Gilt following all the hard work to prepare for the judges’ visit in July, however it was still a creditable achievement and reflected well on Wareham in Bloom and its supporters. The bid for that elusive Gold award was still on, however, and it was hoped that Wareham might be able to achieve this at the national Britain in Bloom finals in St Andrews, Fife on 25th September. The Mayor paid tribute to Councillor Osmond who had worked so hard for Wareham in Bloom over many years.

Consultation on Electoral Review of Purbeck – it was agreed that the best way forward was to set up a crossparty working party plus 2 District Council advisors together with the Town Clerk. HM Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Celebrations 2012 – Deputy Mayor Councillor K Green volunteered to sit on a potential new community group with the Town Clerk to discuss the way ahead for Wareham with regard to these celebrations - plus an event to commemorate the Great Fire of Wareham 250th anniversary in 2012 and to celebrate the Olympic flame arriving in Purbeck on Friday 13th July 2012. Town Guide Working Party - Councillors Mrs A Selby and Ms D Adkins volunteered to form the working party for the next edition due in 2012, with the Town Clerk and representatives from Wareham Chamber of Trade and Purbeck Tourist Information. Mayors Announcements – the Mayor reported on her recent trip to Hemsbach, Germany with the Hemsbach Twinning Association to celebrate the signing of the Twinning Charter with Wareham 25 years ago. The trip (self-funded by Association members) had been very successful and a presentation of a specially framed certificate had been made to the Hemsbach Society. The German fraternity had announced plans to bring a commemorative stone sculpture to Wareham and it remained to be seen where it would be located in the town . Wareham Town Council contact: Admin Office 01929 553006. Bookings taken for Corn Exchange, use of the Council Chamber for weddings/civil partnerships plus sports pitches at the Recreation Ground, Worgret Road. Website: www.wareham-tc.gov.uk

Evolution vs. Creation As famous geologist John Mackay visits our village this month as part of a nationwide tour, I felt it would be good to look again at the key question often ignored by many evolutionary thinkers today. The simple question is, “if creation was true what would the evidence be? It’s a straightforward enough question when you think about it – yet many atheistic scientists will immediately repeat the inevitable mantra – “Ah but all the geology and research evidence points to evolution”. Now that simply isn’t a good enough answer to the question. It fact it is not an answer at all but a blind rebuttal of the question. It highlights for me the biased preconceptions that so many bring to this important debate. There is an alternative viewpoint to seeing the world through a set of pre-conceived ‘evolutionary glasses’ – and John Mackay is very good at presenting valid evidence to support the Biblical account of creation. So I hope that some reading this might come along to that evening – it’s on Sunday 9th October at 6.30pm but as this date may have passed by the time you get this magazine – DVDs of John Mackay are available to any interested parties – free. In Genesis 1:1 we read that “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth”. The phrase there means that ‘out of nothing’ God created matter. He created the world as we know it today and in Genesis 1:26 we read, “Then God said, let us make man in our own image, in our likeness”. Later we read in Genesis 2:7 that “He formed man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life”. In other words God took something that already existed and made it into something else. What is a human being? Dirt of itself has no value – but by divine intelligence and information man was formed from the beginning with a conscience, emotions – and the ability to make choices and create. Man is a lesser reflection of God because, as even scientists have to admit, he needs pre-existing material before he can make something. The origin of life and the universe will always fascinate our minds. And the theory of evolution is a faith system that begins with the assumption that the universe was self-creating and that through a system of random changes over billions of years has evolved to its present state. I would boldly suggest that the faith system – Christianity – based as it is on fact and firmly rooted in an historical and ecological context – provides more satisfactory answers. As John Mackay would say, “if you don’t ask the right question then you don’t get the right answer.” There is more evidence out there than most people are willing to admit that points to an Intelligent Designer Creator who made the world we live in, made animals after their own kind and made men and women to reflect His image. If that is true, and on the evidence I see around me I believe it is, then in God’s eyes every one of you reading this is special and precious to Him and every life has a plan and purpose designed by him. But because we have not been created as robots – the choice is ours! May you know the peace of God that passes understanding! Pastor Jim Morris The Manse Flat Butt Lane Bere Regis Tel: 01929 471270
Other News from the Chapel Sermons with ‘attitude!’ – Throughout this month Pastor Jim is continuing a series on the Beatitudes from Matthew chapter 5. Aimed at living the Christian lifestyle this challenging teaching from the lips of Jesus focuses not on what we ‘do’ as Christians but what we ‘are’. Hence the title “The Be Attitudes”. It’s our character that shapes our conduct. Easy to listen-to teaching which might prove beneficial not just to Christians, but to those wanting to know what the Christian life involves. Every Sunday at 10am and everyone is welcome. Refreshments provided after the Service.

In 2011 the Music Trust celebrates 30 years of dedicated work in education and encouragement of talented musicians to use their skills and artistry for the enrichment of worship. The Trust gives grants to assist those truly dedicated to music who, without help, might never be able to achieve their goals. Grants are made to organ scholars, lay clerks, singers, instrumentalists and cathedral choristers. Stories, such as this one from St. Georges Chapel in Windsor are commonplace: “Henry has progressed beautifully since I last wrote to you and sings solo in chapel on average once a fortnight. All this is culminating in a performance at the Royal Albert Hall before the Queen, for the British Legion of Remembrance. He is opening the evening with a solo of Pie Jesu. Many heartfelt thanks for your valued continued support of a chorister.”

MICHAEL JAMES MUSIC TRUST 1981 — 2011
Based in Wimborne Minster, the charity has a local representative in Brian Barker, proprietor of the quaint and attractive jewellers, Georgian Gems, in Swanage High Street. If you would like to support the Trust or find out more please contact Brian at Georgian Gems on 01929 424697.
The Purbeck Association of The National Trust One of the advantages of belonging to a group like ours is that groups can visit places and see things that individuals can’t. Last month for example I wrote about our forthcoming visit to the RNLI in Poole. As an individual (even as an RNLI member) you simply can’t access all the areas that you see on a guided tour. Next summer we’re planning a visit to Cothay Manor (pictured right), said to be the finest example of a small medieval manor in England, and again somewhere that can really only be seen as part of a group. Even when you visit places that are open to everyone, groups often get special treatment. Many venues will arrange for a guide to come on board your coach when you arrive and give the group a special introductory talk, which prepares you for what you’re going to see and do. To get the advantages of group visits, why not get more out of your own National Trust membership (or your status as a Trust Volunteer) by joining us? Our annual membership is great value at only £5, or £7.50 for a couple. If you’d like to, call Membership Secretary Jay Burke on 423775 or visit our website www.purbecknt.org.uk, where you can see our whole programme of activities.

14 TO 29 OCTOBER 2011 The Purbeck Film Festival warmly invites you to join us for an array of over 60 fantastic film screenings in more than 30 unique venues, including many titles from this year’s theme, ‘Oscar and Award Winners’. We are thrilled to welcome new partners including The Winchester Bar in Bournemouth, Fab Frocks in Westbourne, and the East Bar in Swanage, as well as our usual exciting venues, new and old. This year’s featured director is Alfred Hitchcock – a pre-celebration of the archive restoration project taking place next Spring and we’ll be screening some of his best work, including To Catch a Thief, The Birds, Sabotage, Vertigo, The Lady Vanishes, Psycho and Strangers on a Train. All our film events offer more than just a visit to the cinema, we offer a unique cinematic experience with introductions, special guests, film notes for every title, a great atmosphere and strong community spirit. We open events at the Rex with an Oscar winning short animation The Lost Thing, followed by the much talked about main feature, Cave of Forgotten Dreams (Herzog 2010), a stunning start to the Purbeck Film Festival 2011. The Purbeck Shorts Competition, now in its 3rd year, is going from strength to strength. Short films worldwide have been pouring in and we have shortlisted films to screen on Friday, 21 October at the Rex. Make your vote count in the Audience Award and see who our talented Judges choose to win the Jury Prize. Full programme and purchasing information is on our website www.purbeckfilm.com.
