3. Letting life flourish While the bathroom perhaps isn’t the most obvious place to begin inviting in the flora and fauna of the outside world, the moisturehumidity, and flow of air actually makes it a great place for lowmaintenance plants such as ferns to Meanwhile, thrive.adding in airpurifying plants such as spider plants, peace lilies, aloe vera and snake plants will actively improve the purity of the air in your bathroom. A biproduct of this is a decrease in mould, meaning less need for harmful cleaning products and chemicals. 4. Limescale lag Limescale is something we commonly associate with poor performance in kettles and washing machines, and that’s correct. Yet, by extension, when our appliances require more energy, over a longer period, to perform the same function, both we and the environment are paying for the privilege.

Water Wastage Showers, toilets, baths and bathroom sinks are collectively responsible for more than twothirds of a household’s average water meaningusage, that any reduction we can make in water usage will have a hugely positive impact on the Thereenvironment.aresimple measures we can all take such as showering rather than bathing, and beyond that changing an old showerhead for a low-flow version with high pressure. Also ensure leaky taps are fixed and are certainly not left running for any amount of time unnecessarily – a tap left on can let through six litres of water in under a minute. That means small things such as turning the tap off when brushing your teeth or washing your face can offer a huge benefit in terms of saving water. And of course, whilst helping the environment you’re also reducing your water bill.
From taps to showerheads to the big one, build-up inside your boiler, banishing limescale means keeping your heating appliances and waterflow systems running as efficiently as possible.

1. Plastic is not fantastic We all know the issue with single-use plastics, and the damage they do to the environment. The prevalence of refillable and reusable body products – soaps, gels, moisturisers etc. – and the number of retailers wising up to this trend, has kicked off a cultural shift that is rapidly gathering pace. Not only is this tendency for refillable products a trendy revolution, even if it is akin to wartime replenishment of products, but typically those products on offer have been developed with sensitive skin or vegan elements in mind, meaning they are better not just for the environment, but ourselves too.

In simple terms, that means all of us can turn the thermostat down, or look towards secondary glazing windows, or put more insulation in the attic. All of us can recycle more, can waste less, can grow our own vegetables, walk more, invest in electric technology, or simply just explore the idea of sharing more with our neighbours. All of these things reduce collective carbon and environmental footprint, but most also share the idea of community and a common goal, and I think that’s just as Ofimportant.course,
Designer, writer and television presenter, Kevin McCloud leapt into our consciousness with his vastly successful Grand Designs show on Channel 4. This month, the a able architectural business owner talks sustainability.about Sustainability in design is obviously a hot topic, yet it comes from a place where the reality is the housing stock in this country is actually pretty poorly constructed, and when that happens it means we are immediately on the backfoot as far as sustainability and carbon footprint goes. This comes about because of that classic play-o between the environment and the wallet – they have never been good bedfellows and never will be, so we kind of get what we expect out of the Whatequation.that means is that while our homes are typically not as sustainable or environmentally friendly as they might be, we compensate for that fact by trying to wrestle back a bit of positive contribution through our own daily lifestyle habits.
next generation of homebuilders, and in that I’m talking about things like high-performing concretes, and cements that have a lot of recycled material in them… like blast furnace slag and pulverised fly ash. It’s also about building with recycled stone and locally sourced wood materials, and investing in craftsmanship rather than mass-market ways of producing what we need.
When we source materials this way, we tend to value the relationship we have with them that bit more, so we are e ectively redrawing the circle in a way that ensures we invest more in what we
I’mhave.really looking forward to a new wave of sustainability that goes right from the root, because as much as how we behave as people a ects the environment, the way our homes are built in the first place determines so many of our actions, and the extent we need to go to in order to a ect the same change.

Game,
While the subject of retirement for Serena Williams is always one on the lips of interviewers, it is to the 40-year-old’s unending credit that she perseveres on in a sport that has given her so much, all of which she has paid back many times over. From recurrent injuries, mental health worries, the exhaustion of over two decades on the circuit, the distractions of media work, and the small matter of a young child waiting for her at home, no-one would begrudge the Florida-born star – the greatest female tennis player to have ever lived – the decision to start a new career.

“I have found it really interesting to see my perspective and my perception change, and I love Williams, that.” a two-time Olympic gold medallist, admits that the dichotomy between her professional and her personal life is one that is hard for some to fathom, but then again, isn’t it always tricky to define living icons. “Whatever I believe in I fight for, and I will do it again and again until it’s right. My daughter brought out a new form of expression in me, and that was really important. It was a really humble experience; but also one that made me want to reach out and express this new me.
“I just always come back to that phrase, ‘you are a long time retired’, and that really speaks volumes for who I am and the love I have for this sport,” she begins. “Of course, on occasions I have grown tired of it, and certainly I value my downtime away from the court more than ever before; but if the idea of taking my racket out there, of competing, of giving it my all, still excites me, then why would I possibly want to do anything else?” Indeed, Williams’ ambitions on the court have evolved almost as much as the athlete herself. The energy you use to heat your home and hot water is responsible for around 20% of your carbon emissions - the greenhouse gases causing climate change. Winchester Area SuperHomes is here to help you reduce this, by changing your property so that it uses less energy - known as retrofitting. Local charity Winchester Action on the Climate Crisis (WinACC) is running Winchester Area SuperHomes, a two-year non-profit project aimed at reducing home energy use. It provides homeowners with detailed, tailored, independent advice on how they can retrofit their properties to reduce their carbon WinACCemissions.islooking to provide 150 homeowners across Winchester District with detailed Whole House Retrofit Plans which give information on insulation, solar panels and heat pumps. Properties in council tax bands A, B, C and D receive a 50% project subsidy on the fee. Peter and Maggie transformed their home in Twyford last year and are very happy with the results. Their house is now warmer, more comfortable, costs less to heat and they have drastically reduced their carbon footprint. “For years we’ve been aware of the climate crisis, and we decided it was time to walk the walk and not just talk the talk” Peter explained. After getting independent advice, they started by adding insulation to their cavity walls, which reduced their bills straight away. They replaced their gas boiler with an air source heat pump. With a green electricity contract, the switch from gas to electricity cut their carbon footprint considerably - and because heat pumps are more efficient than boilers it didn’t cost any more to run. Maggie is very pleased. “We reckon our energy usage is about 25% down over the year and our home is warmer, too”.
Reduce your home energy bills and your carbon footprint
There are several grants available for home energy retrofit – and the Project Officer can help you apply for them. The Boiler Upgrade Scheme provides grants of £5,000 towards the cost of an air source heat pump. For homeowners on low incomes, the Green Homes Local Authority Delivery scheme can provide grants of up to £10,000. To find out more, and register your interest, go to: superhomes.org.uk/winchester

The Autumn Equinox on 23rd September marks when daylight hours equal the number of night-time hours, wherever you are on Earth. The term equinox originates from the Latin meaning ‘equal night’. The Autumn equinox marks the point at which nights start to become longer than days.
Jupiter & Saturn
Both gas giants are visible from 9pm in our south-eastern skies as the Sun sets, with dazzling Jupiter lower to the east (left) of less-bright Saturn. An almost-full moon appears between them on the 9th. Moon September’s full moon occurs on the 10th. It is close to Saturn on the 8th, Jupiter on the 10th, and Mars on the 16th.
Mercury The innermost planet cannot be seen this month. Venus Venus is visible just before sunrise in the east, but is lost in the Sun’s glare towards the end of the month. It will reappear in our evening skies in December. Mars Mars can be seen late in the evening, rising around 10pm. It is currently located in the constellation of Taurus the Bull, and is close to the Hyades and Pleiades star clusters (see figure).
Welcome to the September Stargazing Page. Highlights this month include the return of the gas giants to our evening skies, and a rare opportunity to see the planet Uranus disappear briefly behind the Moon.
The ISS can be spotted early in the morning until the 11th; it then moves to our evening skies from the 15th until month end. To establish exact timings please refer to www.heavens-above.com or a similar webpage for up-to-date information, remembering to set the location to your observing area.

Did you know...? A very rare event occurs in the UK for the first time since 1953 this month, when the Moon moves in front of (occults) the planet Uranus. Although not a naked-eye planet, Uranus can easily be spotted in binoculars, and you can use these to watch as it disappears behind the lit side of the Moon on the 14th around 10.15pm depending on your location. It will then reappear out from behind the dark limb of the Moon around an hour or so later. While studies in humans are still in very early stages, lab and animal studies have shown promising effects of curcumin in the fight against cancer, by interfering with several important molecular pathways involved in cancer development, growth and spread. While many of these studies are in their early stages, one thing is for sure: you no longer need to feel guilty about your weekly Indian takeaway.
It’s tasty, has been around for centuries and is a key ingredient in Britain’s favourite dish – chicken tikka masala –but it’s only recently that the full benefits of turmeric have come to the fore. This gorgeously golden spice gives curry its orange tinge and has long been used in India as a medicinal herb. This is all down to compounds found within the spice, the most important of which is curcumin, which has powerful antiinflammatory effects and is a very strong antioxidant. It can also be used as a lively, peppery essence in things like juices, foods and stocks. Dried turmeric, meanwhile, which is much less potent, adds colour and enhanced earthiness to preparations such as roasts, rice and scrambled eggs. Supplement that! Of course, turmeric doesn’t have to be used in its raw form of food preparation; it can also be taken as a supplement. Terminology Turmeric is a plant and it’s the roots of the plant that are used to make the spice that is used in cooking and herbal drinks. Curcumin is the naturally occurring compound within the plant’s roots that give it it’s bright yellow colour and is known as a carotenoid

While reading this, 1 in 5 of us will be expecting pain in our neck at this very moment! And if you aren’t that person right now, we have 75% chance of experiencing neck pain at some point throughout our life. There are some key factors that may be a ecting these changes, including wearing backpacks incorrectly, poor posture, screen time and using our phones too much. When we have neck pain, the muscles can tighten up as they try to protect the area. To stretch some of the big muscles in your neck and upper back, sit forward into the edge of your chair, so that there is some space between your back rest and the back of your chair. Hold onto the side of the chair with your left hand and bring your right hand over to the base of your skull on the left side, and gently stretch your neck over to the right, assist this stretch with a gentle pull from the right hand. Hold here for 30 seconds, relax and repeat on the other side. Bags and purses that are most common for day-to-day use, are bags carried on one shoulder. Even if people are using backpacks, it is not unusual to see them using it only on one shoulder. While carrying it for 30 minutes like this may not seem an issue, have you considered what this could add up to in one year? Just 30 minutes a day adds up to over 180 hours in a year. Imagine doing anything one sided for 180 hours and there will be some notable changes. are ways change this habit. One, is to reduce the load in the bag are carrying. Only take the essentials and carry a lighter load. The second, slighty harder change focus on, is to make sure you keep your shoulders level when carrying a bag on one side. The third, is to use a backpack!

Of course, boat trips are a must and with plenty of choice, Weymouth harbour is a delight to sail from. I may have mentioned that my Mum has dementia. It is a horrible disease that is for sure. Never predictable and always a challenge. My Dad, at age 87 still drives all the way from Hull to visit us and I absolutely take my hat off to him for persisting through the same questions on and on as he cruises down the motorway. Music works well and the sixties songs with The Supremes, Neil Diamond, Buddy Holly, Dusty Springfield and even the Rolling Stones are a blessing no one would ever realise. Singing to her hearts content, all smiles, the long journey is possible… albeit ear plugs are recommended! Dad, having been a fisherman all his life, loves the water. That is where I get my passion from, I am sure. My sister and I try and give him as much time as possible for his ultimate pleasure, pond fishing for carp, but boat trips to sea are also one of his delights. Hayden, our son of now nearly nineteen, used to go on the Yorkshire Belle with them, in Bridlington, when he visited in the summer some moons ago. So, off to sea we went. We chose a smaller, leisurely boat called Josephine so that Mum would not be alarmed. It was just gorgeous. Bobbing along on the calm waters, literally watching the world go by, looking back at the busy Esplanade with people milling around, fair rides spinning, children playing, I All aboard! have to say I just love it. Passing Nothe Fort, on the right, our coastal defence which was built between 1860 and 1872 by 26 Company of the Royal Engineers to protect Portland and Weymouth Harbours, makes you feel quite small sat in a tiny blue boat. It was due to this construction that Portland became an important Royal Navy base. The fort is certainly worth a visit but do be ready for the gun shots on each hour or they can be quite a shock! I nearly finished up on the top of Portland (spiritually) when I first heard it! With a prison there, I am not sure that was prosurvival… So, back on the boat, all was well. We continued across the bay towards Portland Harbour. I was amazed at the buildings jutting right out to sea. I believe they were all part of the defence which was put in place. They are pretty derelict now and would need quite some upgrade, but I am sure they would make some very unusual houses. The problem with me is that I am always looking for a project to do… it drives Stephen mad! One day I will retire… but it could be some time. We pootled into Portland Bay where there were huge cargo ships and a naval ship, but then to our utter delight two dolphins jumped out of the water in synchronised dancing. How wonderful! Back and forth they frolicked, entertaining us with lots of ooh, aahs and happy sounds. Family times are all about making memories, and although Mum will not remember, as she was ‘not there’ and will adamantly assert that, we knew she had a good time and loved every minute. So did we. Sailing back, to our astonishment there was a seal bathing on a rock, looking at us in a rather bored way while flapping its tail quietly against the stone. What an incredible day and all here in the UK. I do enjoy a trip abroad, but there are such sights, delights and moments to be enjoyed right here. Dad really wants to go reef fishing. It is on his ‘bucket’ list and with trips available here in Weymouth, I wonder if Daichi can make this go right for us all? I wonder? Let’s see in the next issue of your Local Magazine. Have a great month of September. By Debbie Corney Dolphins in Portland harbour the seal?

In this month’s column, Martin Lewis looks at how, in a time of rising costs, we can make savings in other places.
There’s so much attention at the moment on the cost of petrol, the cost of our utilities, the rise in inflation, and it all seems like bad news. Yet sometimes we are all guilty of obsessing over the negative elements whilst failing to recognise good opportunities elsewhere; and if you’re looking for one sector where costs, pretty much consistently over time, have always decreased, then reach into your pocket and take out your trusty mobile phone. Telecommunications, broadband and connected industries continue to slash prices in what is a consumerled price war, and the simple truth is many of us are still paying too much for our mobile
Money on my mind...the Martin Lewis column phone contracts. So if you’re coughing more than about a tenner a month for your mobile phone contract – and by that I mean calls, texts and data, not the device itself –you’re probably in line to save some money. It all comes down to looking for the best-priced SIM for your needs, because once you find the right deal, it’s really very easy nowadays to grab your PAC code and switch networks. Now usually when I suggest switching to a different mobile provider, people come back with concern over signal strength for, say, Lebara Mobile or PlusNet or whoever it is offering the best deal on data. The reality though is that the communications network is run by four companies and four companies only – O2, EE, Vodafone and Three. Every other provider is piggybacking off their signal, so, in effect, it’s the same signal. So by selecting one of the smaller companies all you’re doing is going with a virtual network, and everything else should remain the same. Obviously check before you sign up to see if 5G or tethering conditions are available, but beyond those things it’s the same line. It’s strange that mobile phones are such an integral part of our lives, yet many of us take for granted the competitiveness of the industry and don’t realise where we can be making savings.Inanera of prices rising inexplicably across the board in other elements of our life, the time is now to start working the equation back in our favour, so have a look at your bill, survey the competition and start the conversation! He’s the UK’s leading money saving expert - a journalist and presenter who has kept millions of pounds in people’s pockets as well as lifting the lid on the threats and dangers we need to be aware of as consumers.

In this case, definitely consider spinach, typically planted at the start of autumn, and carrots too. We associate carrots with sugary, summer flavours, but planted in November and with a bit of protection, the Adelaide carrot flourishes across the colder months for an earlyspring treat. 1. Put the flour into the bowl of a food processor, add the butter in large pieces and process for a few seconds to the consistency of fine breadcrumbs. Add the sugar and the egg yolk and process until the mixture starts to come together to form a dough. 2. Next, pour in enough water – probably 1 or 2 tbsp – to Method produce a smooth, firm dough. You can also do this by hand, rubbing the butter into the flour with your fingertips, then stirring in the sugar and eggs and a little water and bringing the dough into a ball by hand. 3. Wrap the pastry in kitchen parchment and let it rest in the fridge for 30 minutes. Set the oven at 190°C/gas mark 5. Slice off one-third of the dough and set aside. On a lightly floured board, roll out the larger piece of pastry and use it to line the tart tin. Roll out the reserved pastry into a disc roughly the size of the tart, then cut into 2cm wide strips. Brush lightly with a little beaten egg, then place the strips one at a time on to the surface of the tart in a lattice pattern. 5. Bake for 30 minutes until the pastry is pale biscuit-coloured and the marmalade is bubbling. Let the tart cool before easing from the tin and slicing.
