EDITOR’S LETTER
Welcome Vanessa Vanessa Richmond, Editor
Come on in to our October issue, where the mood is mellow and the cosiness is real! We often focus on the functional – creating a home that runs smoothly to facilitate busy lives – but this issue is more about feeling really at home… at home. It’s full of ideas to help make yours a true retreat – even if it’s only when you’re closeted in your home office or finally getting time to soak in the bath. Looking ahead, the super-organised among you might like to know that tickets to our sister title’s annual event – Country Homes & Interiors Christmas at Stonor Park (26-29 November) – are now on sale. Go to ichfevents.co.uk/ countryhomeschristmas or call 01425 277988 and use code EV287 to save £2.

LOVELY SMELLS FROM LOAF Pencil Sharpenings, Country Boozer and Laundry Days… just the names are enough to conjure up the fragrances of Loaf’s first collection of scented candles. The lidded, colour-dipped vessel can go on to have a new life as a pencil pot or bits-and-bobs jar once the 35-hour burn time is done. Our fave for autumn is Country Boozer, which smells of orange peel, pine amber and wood smoke, £40.

JANE CHURCHILL’S PATTERN PARADE The 2020 collection is a happy combination of colour and pattern positivity. There is organised chaos behind the variety of prints – large scale painterly florals, a modern toile and bamboo leaf embroidery, which can be paired with contrasting kilim-style designs, bold, graphic weaves and block-printed shapes. The same vibrant tones feature throughout the collection, so you can be confident that mixing prints in the same colour grouping will always work. Or, you can just go for it and clash your colour choices, too.

The storage pieces fuse chic with unique, and the Bardot cupboard’s slim brass legs and smart arch sit beautifully alongside the tactile textured rattan front and grainy mango wood finish.

“
It’s a wellorganised home with a place for everything, that really works for family life
”
orking from home with a young family, the Ingrams dreamed of a house with scope to build a garden office. ‘We eventually found a three bed ex-council house with a wide, south-facing garden,’ says Thea. ‘A mother and son had bought it through the right-tobuy scheme but were in a legal dispute over ownership. A court order meant they couldn’t accept less than 10 percent under asking price. It put off developers, so we were the only serious buyers,’ says Thea. ‘Every room and numerous garden sheds were piled high with rubbish – 14 tonnes were removed before completion – and we could only view the house with both owners, the estate agent and a police officer present.’ The couple sold their four-bedroom terrace nearby and moved into the two-bedroom flat Joel bought before they married. While waiting for planning permission for the garden office, the front room was decorated as a temporary work space for Thea and her employees at Stanza Interior Design (stanza-id.com). As the Arts & Crafts house had few original features, they had no qualms about stripping everything back during the five-month project. ‘Our vision was to open up the ground floor by knocking down the lean-to conservatory and extending in line with the neighbour’s house. Quad Architects re-designed the first floor, creating an extra bedroom by moving the staircase and dropping the ceilings to give us the head height for a loft conversion.’ Thea added built-in storage in every room, including the hallway and landing, and the house has a simple palette of grey and white with mustard accents. ‘This place works perfectly for us now, at least while the children are at school. Eventually, we’d like to build a house from scratch out of town,’ says Thea.

This move has made me much more daring with colour and décor. I’d never have gone for a pink front door before, but now I think it’s the prettiest house on the street
”
nna Chisholm had drawn a blank as she searched her local area in Melbourne, Australia for the perfect family home. But, after widening the net, she finally struck lucky. ‘I found a timber-clad 1920s bungalow that had been newly refurbished, and had a big, modern extension,’ she says. ‘Inside, it was just white, so although there were some period features, it was the classic “blank canvas”. ‘The two-storey design was a plus-point. My son Charlie was a baby, and I had plans for another child, so a family-friendly environment was on my wish list. I saw that toys and clutter could be confined to a playroom upstairs, and once we’d passed that stage, everyone could have their own space. The open-plan ground floor was attractive, too, as I love entertaining. It brings the kitchen, living room and dining area together and it’s full of light, with huge, floor-to-ceiling glass doors opening onto the deck and the garden.’ Inspired by the bungalow’s marriage of old and new, Anna started with a clear-out of the ‘beige and bland’ furniture she’d accumulated over time, replacing it with a fresh, distinctive blend of family antiques, vintage finds and colour-packed, modern pieces. ‘I was ready for change, and this move marked a new chapter,’ she says. ‘I’d loved our previous house, but the larger space and mix of styles and eras were very appealing.’ Over the next few years, Anna found her confidence and enthusiasm for bold interiors growing as she pushed her old boundaries. ‘I began putting unexpected elements together throughout the house,’ she says. ‘One brave choice soon led to another, and I’m thrilled with the results.’ After several years here, and now with her own homeware business (bungalowtradingco.com.au), Anna’s looking to put her distinctive mark on a new property.

WHAT THE EXPERTS SAY... Designers and stylists share their views ■ ‘Add areas of black and white for a sophisticated and crisp look,’ suggests Judy Smith, consultant at Crown. ‘For a more unusual combination, try a flash of dusky pink or vivid turquoise. This could go on something as simple as a single chair or oversized vase.’ ■ ‘Start in the bedroom, where olive green can help to create a serene environment,’ says Charlotte Cosby, head of creative at Farrow & Ball. ‘lt’s also suited to rooms that overlook nature. The colours from the great outdoors will further enhance the green tones of the walls and create a relaxing outdoor feel in your home.’ ■ ‘Olive green is a predominantly yellow shade of green, with a little black and a hint of green to it,’ says Nelly Hall, brand director at M&L Paint. ‘This makes it a particularly good shade for use on window frames, conservatories or garden rooms that lead to a predominantly green vista as it draws the sight line through the frame.’ ■ ‘For a modern take on the trend, pair olive tones with brass accents to create an elegant yet minimalist décor,’ says Sue Kim, senior colour designer at Valspar. ‘Or think bold and beautiful and team it with pink. The colours sit opposite each other on the colour wheel as a sophisticated duo and can work well in a bedroom.’ ■ ‘Paler olive has a grey undertone, so works naturally with soft greys – a combination that’s extremely calming and peaceful,’ says Judy Smith, consultant at Crown. ‘With this look, keep to a tonal palette and paint woodwork the same colour as the walls to give a harmonious feel.’ ■ ‘This is a great colour for east-facing rooms,’ says Cathryn Helsby, marketing manager and colour expert at Earthborn. ‘These spaces often have green/blue undertones and it’s best to play to this. Similarly, olive would also work well in north-facing rooms: instead of competing with the lack of light, we recommend embracing it.’ ■ ‘Neutrals with a pink and biscuit base pair well with olive shades as they have a warm undertone and bring a balancing light to the scheme,’ says Dominic Myland, CEO of Mylands.

lthough originally intended to be an investment property, as they had a baby on the way, Rachel and Michael Armstrong decided to turn this London house into a family home for themselves instead. ‘We applied for planning permission to extend the ground and first floors, as well as to convert the loft and basement to make the property work for us,’ says Rachel. In August 2018, the year-long build began. ‘Inevitably, there were many challenges. There were issues with a shared drain when digging out the basement, the kitchen floor had to be reinforced for the Aga, a skylight was put in the wrong place and there were several leaks, but the builders were amazing, coming back to deal with any snags. ‘Now we have a utility, which is great for cleaning bottles and storing baby items. It’s in the basement, which is accessed via a secret door in the living area bookcase. The space also includes a den, kitchenette and bedroom with en suite. It’s like a separate flat and could have multiple uses in the future. By extending at the side, we’ve created a luxurious main suite, as well as two guest bedrooms and a bathroom on the top floor.’ Interior designer Caitlin Miller (caitlinmillerinteriors. com) transformed the main living spaces, bedroom suite and shower room, and collaborated on the kitchen design with Eclectic Interiors. ‘She blended the best of our ideas to create a cohesive feel. It was a stressful year tackling such a big renovation, especially with a baby, but using an interior designer made the process much easier and now I can’t wait to add the finishing touches.’

The view from our house is amazing, overlooking sea on one side and forest on the other
”
summer holiday filled with art and culture convinced Henrietta Sharma Rubow and her husband Christian to move back to Denmark from their home of six years in Switzerland. ‘We’d been to The Louisiana Museum of Modern Art by the Øresund strait, which separates Sweden and Denmark,’ says Henrietta. ‘Then we explored the neighbourhood and discovered how beautiful it was.’ In 2001, they found a run-down three-bedroom house: ‘It had its own beach, a wonderful garden and forest on one side,’ says Henrietta, ‘but it needed a loving hand; there were too many small rooms and no real entrance, as well as hessian-covered walls and brown wood panelling.’ The first renovation involved knocking down walls, replacing windows and adding a new kitchen and a ground-floor bathroom. Seven years later, the family needed more space: ‘We extended to gain a new entrance and double-height living room with a mezzanine space above,’ says Henrietta. ‘We also renovated the downstairs bathroom, created a utility, fitted a zinc roof and put a modern fireplace in the dining room.’ The couple also gave the exterior a makeover: ‘We went for black cladding, for an understated look.’ Four years on, they added a storey above the kitchen to get a bigger bedroom for Nicoline, whose old room became a bathroom. Henrietta used whitewashed planks and grey paint in different tones to create continuity throughout. ‘I ensured the natural tones fitted together,’ she says. Her experience as an interior designer at Kvänum in Hellerup (kvanum.com), proved particularly useful in dressing the challenging 6m-high living room. ‘It has our own personal touch that we created together, and the view is amazing,’ says Henrietta.

INTERIOR DESIGN ADVICE
CHOOSE THE RIGHT CARPETS & RUGS Even at the budget end of the market, carpets and rugs are a long-term investment, so soak up our experts’ knowledge and get it right every time…
SMART BUY ‘Don’t skimp on the underlay and ensure you always use a professional fitter – carpet is a costly outlay, so invest wisely,’ says Diana. Condo Wilton carpet in Hexagon, £39.99sq m, Carpetright
STYLE & DECOR DIVIDE SPACE ‘Rugs can help zone an open-plan space, so each area can be easily defined without the need for walls or partitions,’ says Amy
STATEMENT STYLE ‘Looking ahead to 2021, patterned carpets and rugs are on the up,’ says Diana. Odyssey carpet in Twilight, from £54.98sq m, Kersaint Cobb
ECHO SHAPES ‘Round rugs are great for creating a focal point or emphasising a particular piece of furniture,’ says Daniel
T
he right flooring can make – or break – a room scheme, and there are certainly some bold choices out there when it comes to carpet and rugs. But it’s not just about colour and pattern, as our three experts – an interior stylist, an interior designer and design director – share… DO YOU USE CARPET PROFESSIONALLY, OR HAS IT HAD ITS DAY? ‘Never!’ says interior stylist and set designer Diana Civil. ‘It’s an extremely versatile part of a decorating scheme. It also looks and feels wonderfully tactile. Patterned carpet is set for a massive revival. After the gloom and doom of 2020, maximalism continues – it’s all about selfexpression. You can imagine how much neutral carpet I’ve used on
shoots over the years, but I get so excited to see new colours and patterns – to me, the more bold, imaginative and innovative, the better. It does take courage to step away from neutrals. Perhaps transform your stairs, giving personality to a functional throughroute?’ Interior designer Amy Jones admits she hasn’t used carpet in many recent projects, with clients requesting wooden flooring, and is more cautious: ‘There is a trend for jewel colours and maximalist patterns, but I prefer a neutral carpet in a jute/wool mix, layering on interest with a rug.’ SHOULD I PUT THE SAME CARPET EVERYWHERE, OR IS IT OK TO MIX IT UP? ‘It depends on the layout of your rooms,’ says Diana. ‘In a traditional home with separate rooms, I love mixing it up as it adds personality to each space, but it’s good to have

DANIEL PRENDERGAST DESIGN DIRECTOR one colour that links everything together. For an open- plan, multipurpose room, you can “zone” areas with different carpets or team a plain with a stripe.’ IS IT ODD TO HAVE CARPET IN THE LIVING ROOM, BUT HARD FLOORS EVERYWHERE ELSE? ‘No,’ says Diana, ‘it’s about what’s right for your home. Consider the style and practical requirements of a room when choosing flooring.’ Amy says it depends on whether the room is separate or open plan: ‘If it’s part of an open-plan space, then I’d say yes, but if it’s a room

in its own right, such as a snug or TV room, then carpet helps to create that cosy feel.’ IS IT NAFF TO HAVE A RUG ON A CARPET? ‘I’d say it’s all down to how you do it,’ says Amy. ‘If you have a neutral carpet, a rug adds an extra layer. If you have a thick-pile carpet, then a thick-pile rug would be too much, but a patterned rug over a neutral carpet gives colour and interest.’ Diana agrees: ‘While some treat this as a capital sin, personally I think it has its place with certain types of carpet. It’s also great for rentals.’

SIZE MATTERS ‘Rug under a table?’ says Amy. ‘Make sure it’s big enough to pull the chairs out without coming off the rug.’ Gabby jute rug, 160x 230cm, £200, Habitat
WHAT ARE YOUR FAVOURITE RUG TRENDS? ‘It’s a really exciting time,’ says Daniel Prendergast of The Rug Seller, ‘with great materials, techniques and innovations. Vintage-style rugs are extremely popular, as are round and statement ones, while shaggy rugs never seem to tire, and oversized knit rugs are ideal for autumn.’ For Diana, it’s about layering different sizes in patterns and plains, along with ‘really bold abstract and pictorial rugs.’ Amy’s loving more sustainability and ethical sourcing, with sisal, jute and wool rugs gaining momentum. ‘Persian-style rugs are a constant staple of mine, too,’ she says. WHAT MISTAKES DO PEOPLE COMMONLY MAKE WITH CARPETS AND RUGS? Diana’s bugbear is a tiny rug in the centre of a room. ‘Always choose the largest rug that will work in your space,’ she recommends, ‘and measure before you shop.’ Amy advises, ‘A rug should be large enough to sit under the front legs of the sofa, while in a dining room there should be enough space to pull the chairs out and still be on the rug.’ Diana adds, ‘Carpet is one of the more expensive investments

in your home, so be thorough in your research. Quality and price tend to go hand in hand. Colourwise, dark colours will show up every speck of dust, while palecoloured carpets or rugs can be high maintenance. Patterns also need careful consideration.’

”
DIANA CIVIL INTERIOR STYLIST WHAT SHAPE FOR WHAT SPACE? Daniel advises: ‘Echo the orientation of the room, so lengthways if a room is long. Round rugs can create a focal point or emphasise furniture, while runners are versatile – try in the hallway, kitchen, by patio doors as well as either side of the bed.’
IF I USE MORE THAN ONE RUG IN A LARGE SPACE, SHOULD THEY MATCH? ‘It’s a strong design feature if they don’t,’ says Daniel, ‘but this can
COLOUR RICH ‘There’s a big trend towards jewel colours at the moment,’ says Amy. Albion Twist carpet in Mulberry Heather, £7.99sq m, Carpetright
be tricky to pull off. Purposefully clashing designs can look fantastic. Look at rugs from the same collection as they are designed to complement.’ Diana reveals that ‘matchy-matchy’ is big for 2021. Or, if you prefer, ‘Layer different patterned rugs, choosing ones with a similar aesthetic,’ she says.

WHAT DECOR PROBLEMS CAN RUGS SOLVE? ‘Most people think of rugs as finishing touches, but in a large, open-plan space, they are an effective way of defining or separating zones and making the space feel more homely,’ says Diana. ‘If you have hard flooring, a rug adds a softer touch and comfort underfoot as well as improving acoustics.’ Amy adds: ‘They can unify a large, complex room by acting as a focal point.’ Daniel believes rugs are the answer for a quick and easy update: ‘Just as you change your clothes, it’s great to have a rug for spring/summer – something practical like a flatweave, natural fibre or polypropylene rug – then have an autumn/winter option with a deeper pile that’s cosier.’

HOW ABIGAIL DID IT ‘When we bought the house 20 years ago, we put in basic units and stainless steel worktops. The kitchen served us well, but was at the end of its life. The black units and functional surfaces seemed sterile and disconnected from the rest of the space. into a new collaboration, Abigail Ahern x Herringbone Kitchens. We designed a simple, beautiful kitchen that feels bespoke but without the big price tag. The worktops have a subtle texture, and the top quality cabinets, walls and ceiling are a fabulous toffee-ish colour, which makes everything much more cosy. The installation took about two weeks and cost £3,500. Not only does the kitchen look amazing, it feels so inviting, too.’

VINTAGE CABINET For storage and character
HOW LUCY AND TOM DID IT ‘Moving here five years ago, we inherited a long, poorly laid-out galley kitchen, with the oven at one end and the hob at the other. There was only room for a small table, so we couldn’t entertain or even sit together comfortably. We wanted a larger, more practical space. I’ve always loved the view from the hall through to the kitchen and garden beyond, and I wanted to highlight that relationship to the outside, too. Our glass-roofed side extension took three months to build, and cost £58,000. A large pivot door was the best option for the size
108

of opening we had at the back. It’s dramatic, and the big, single pane means no glazing bars obscuring the view. It was made by Maxlight and cost £6,500. We worked with local firm Pluck to design the cabinets in a mix of natural wood that works well with the green-grey walls to connect the space with the outdoors. Fitting took a week and cost £2,700. Our new kitchen has changed the focus of the house and brought the outdoors closer. There’s room to relax together as a family, and with friends – we absolutely love it.’
ABOVE ‘The open shelves on the end of the unit are for plates and glasses, so they create an easy transition to the dining area. LUCY’S CHOICE: PLYWOOD CABINETS
Has Lucy’s pretty ply kitchen caught your eye? We’ve got the skinny on this eco-friendly material… Plywood is durable and hard-wearing. Plus, as it is manufactured with minimal chemicals, compared to materials such as MDF or chipboard, there is little-to-no ‘off-gassing’, making it a more sustainable option, too.
Q
Q
Q
Q
Q
Do I have to leave it bare? While some people love the utilitarian simplicity of uncoloured plywood for both carcasses and doors, it can feel a bit bland. You can use wood stains, paints, veneers and melamine to introduce colour.
FEATURE LINDA CLAYTON PHOTOGRAPH JOCELYN LOW (UNCOMMON PROJECTS)
What is plywood? Formed from thin, compacted layers of wood, modern plywood is lightweight, yet strong. The secret to its strength comes from crosslamination, whereby the grain direction of each layer is alternated.
Which wood is best? For interior furniture, hardwood-based ply is best. Birch-faced ply is the most popular and has a natural pale finish that suits a Scandi vibe. You can also get oak and walnutfaced for a darker finish. Douglas fir, though technically a softwood, has a very tight grain with few knots making it a practical choice in kitchens, too. Bamboo plywood is another option that’s gaining ground for its impressive eco-credentials.
Integrated finger-pulls are perfect for this simple style
Is it expensive? Although less pricey than oak-veneered particleboard, compared to melamine-faced MDF and chipboard, plywood costs more per sheet – but it is less labour intensive to process. What about maintenance? Plywood is naturally water-resistant, but to achieve a low-maintenance, wipe-clean surface it is usually sealed with a clear protective lacquer or oil. Request marine-grade plywood for areas around the sink.

HOW NICOLA AND JAMES DID IT ‘The previous owners of this house were hoarders and the estate agent couldn’t even create a floorplan because there was so much stuff in it, so we didn’t know exactly what we were getting. Once we were in, it was clear that the bathroom was too small for the size of the house, so we stole space from an adjoining bedroom to make it bigger. This meant we’d be able to have the separate shower and bath we wanted.
I work as an interior designer for finchinteriordesign.com, so drew up a new layout myself. In the end, we had to reposition the loo because the layout of the property meant we couldn’t run the soil pipe the way we wanted without spending a lot more. I added natural elements to the scheme, which make it soothing. It could have looked quite stark, but the walnut veneer and textured tiles dramatically soften it.’

BEFORE & AFTER
‘We built an extension with character’ Instead of the usual glass-and-steel box, Bundy and Alex Boase went for a brick and wood-beamed addition that works with their Victorian property
AFTER
BEFORE
A small, poorly designed extension was of little practical use to the family
W
ith one daughter and another on the way, the Boases needed a bigger home. The house they eventually bought was a Victorian property but with bigger Georgian-style proportions. The side return was also wider than usual, so they knew that there was good potential for a spacious kitchen extension. EXTENDING OUT Bundy chose architect Paul Turner to do the design work (turnerarchitects.co.uk) and together they planned an L-shaped kitchen. The process sparked some clever design ideas, such as built-in window seats and an exterior swing. ‘We didn’t want a large open-plan space, but one that was zoned for different uses.’ The builders made and painted carcasses for the kitchen units and peninsula, where they’re built around a large gas cooker. FUNCTION & MOOD ‘The long peninsula means I can face the children while I cook and hopefully they can watch and learn from me.’ Raw wood beams and a subtly pink microscreed floor add warmth to the space. ‘I wanted to use as many natural materials as possible, such as the brick walls, which have been softened with off-white paint.’
Building out and into the side return provided the Boases with a light, bright kitchen and family hang-out space

WHAT I’VE LEARNED
“
Every inch of a property doesn’t need to serve as a dedicated room. We lost what was a second living room, but it improved the flow
‘The large door was white, but it looked unfinished. Once it was painted blue, it was perfect’

5 THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT...
OVERLAPPING SLIDING WINDOWS
A full-width pivoting door and overlapping sliding windows keep the new space light

OCTOBER 2020 | IDEALHOME.CO.UK
THEY GIVE UNOBSTRUCTED VIEWS They can give views out of 90% of the aperture. THEY PROVIDE GREAT ACCESS When open, they allow plenty of light and air into the house, blurring the boundary between indoors and out. THEY’RE VERSATILE Configurations are virtually limitless. They slide, hinge, pivot, bifold, fold-and-slide, depending on the impact on the space.
THEY CAN CONNECT DIFFERENT SPACES They allow the space to be used in a variety of ways. In this house, when the windows are open you can sit on the window seat both inside and outside. THEY ALLOW FOR CLEVER DESIGN How the space will be used immediately inside and outside the windows will inform the decision about their direction and configuration.

IDEAS FOR HOME OFFICES
With working from home the ‘new normal’, have your workspace fit for purpose in no time with our round-up of easy updates, quick fixes and clever buys
1 DOUBLE-UP DESKS IN A SHARED SPACE Work out a desk arrangement that uses
space most efficiently if you’re sharing an office, either side-by-side or desks positioned back-to-back are best. And invest in extra storage so there’s plenty for both of you, to ensure desks stay clear.
Bekant desks, from £110 each; Langfjall office chairs, £100 each, both Ikea
● HOME OFFICE SPECIAL ● HOME OFFICE SPECIAL ● HOME OFFICE SPECIAL ● Wall planner, £12.50, Doodle Love at Noton thehighstreet.com. DSW style chairs, £69 each, Cult Furniture
3 UTILISE A KITCHEN WORKTOP Supplement desk space if you have several people working from home at the same time. An empty run of worktop or a breakfast bar in the kitchen makes a great family hub.
4 SQUEEZE A DESK INTO AN ALCOVE Make use of empty alcoves or awkward areas if you’re needing to set up a desk in a bedroom or living area. A narrow, floating desk won’t protrude into the room too much and is ideal for laptop work. Oak floating desk, £300, Urbansize
2 STACK UP STORAGE
Hiba stackable metal storage box, £55, La Redoute
Open-sided crates make it easier to get your hands on any essentials inside. This metal crate comes in a choice of pretty colours and can be arranged in a mini stack under a desk or as a taller freestanding one. IDEALHOME.CO.UK | OCTOBER 2020

5 TAKE OVER A CORNER
Bronx modular desk, £275; storage shelf, £299; tall shelf, £275; Hamilton office chair, £175, all Next Home
Carve out some extra office space by making use of an out-of-theway corner. Go for an L-shaped or triangular desk to utilise every inch, or invest in a modular system that you can tailor to fit.
6
STAY SERENE WITH GREEN Bringing greenery into an office environment helps evoke a sense of calm and can stimulate creativity, too. Try painting walls a soothing shade of green or, for a quick fix, fill a shelf with plants.

8 COORDINATE THE DECOR Don’t make do with an uninspiring outlook,
give your work area a quick overhaul with a fresh colour on the walls or a pretty wallpaper and blind. Keep to subtle prints and soft, soothing shades for a calm, collected feel.

9 BUILD A WORK WALL Keep your work area contained with a modular system that
can be tailored to suit your needs in terms of desk space and storage. Make a style statement by painting the wall behind a contrasting colour, so that the frame and woodwork stand out against it.
Watford vintage desk shelf, £550; shelving units, from £325 each, all La Redoute

10 SLOT IN A DESK UNDER THE STAIRS Make use of an awkward under-stair area by adapting a couple of flat-pack kitchen cabinets. A tall larder unit and a matching base unit can be slotted in to create a ‘built-in’ home office.
11 ORGANISE WALL SPACE Keep clutter from overtaking a small desk by making use of the wall area above. Start with a pinboard as your anchor and add a couple of wall-mounted pockets and mini shelves to hold all your bits and bobs. Skadis containers, £2 each; memo board, £5, both Ikea, are similar Metod cabinets, from £23 for a base cabinet frame, Ikea. Doors in Calke Green estate eggshell, £64 for 2.5ltr, Farrow & Ball
12 BOX UP BITS AND BOBS If not kept super-tidy, open shelves can easily look messy, so corral small-scale clutter away into decorative storage boxes and stack neatly on shelves. Either buy ready-made boxes or cover your own with off-cuts of coloured paper.
Blossom storage boxes, £28 for set of two, Idyll Home

14 ZONE IN ON YOUR WORK AREA Use paint to define the work zone in an open-plan space, such as a loft room or living area. Paint a panel in shades that contrast with the main wall, framing your desk.
15 DOWNSIZE WITH BESPOKE STORAGE If you’ve got a paperless set-up and no bulky PC to find a home for, then a built-in hideaway office can be tucked into the tightest of spaces. A pull-out desk makes it even more discreet. Bespoke hideaway home office in oak, from £3,000, Neville Johnson
13 BRING IN SOME DESKTOP GREENERY Aid wellbeing by having a plant or two on your

Ideal for a utility room or bedroom for a collection of heels or trainers. Store boots and bags in the bottom sections. Martha shoe rack, £119, Wayfair
WORK WITH WHAT YOU HAVE Use cupboard space efficiently – slot-in racks or cubbies will utilise wasted space at the bottom. Ensure long items of clothing are pulled to one side so shoes are more visible and store special occasion or out-of-season shoes at the back, with those you wear day-to-day at the front. DON’T PICK STYLE OVER SUBSTANCE Something might look good, but is it practical or big enough? Simple bookcase-style designs with flat shelves always work well, with shoes facing forwards for a neat look. Avoid anything with slanted wire shelves – shoes often slip off and they don’t work for thin heels. Find out more at youneedavicky.com or on Instagram and Facebook @youneedavicky

ÔI DISTIL AND REARRANGE NATURE’S BEAUTY’ Jeff Muhs creates striking contemporary artwork for online Runway Gallery
C
ontemporary artist Jeff Muhs is known for his innovative, abstract style. From his hand-built studio in Southampton, New York, he works primarily with oil on canvas, but also experiments with concrete for his sculptures.
Finely Twisted Linen, Jeff Muhs at Runway Gallery
I CONSIDER ART AS AN INVESTMENT IN YOUR QUALITY OF LIFE. Few things exist solely but for the pleasure of experiencing it. I think that large, visually dynamic works benefit from being isolated in their own space, but there’s something beautiful about the poetry of grouping seemingly non-related works, too.
I TAKE ARTISTIC INSPIRATION FROM MY SURROUNDINGS. I grew up in the Hamptons, known for its beauty. My father was a hunting and fishing guide, so I was out on the water with him as a young child from sunrise to sunset. I’ve always been passionate about drawing and painting, so it seemed natural for me to study at the School of Visual Arts in Manhattan, where I learned the traditional techniques of oil painting.
OIL ON CANVAS IS MY MAIN MEDIUM, BUT I’VE ALWAYS BEEN A SCULPTOR. I learned the art of wood sculpting as a child from my father, but it wasn’t until
Charting Totality, Jeff Muhs at Runway Gallery
I built my first house that I discovered concrete as a medium. I became fascinated by it, and have been experimenting ever since. Unlike my paintings, my sculptures are driven primarily by process and form; I love discovering new ways to form shapes. MY CREATIVE PROCESS BEGINS WITH PROCRASTINATION. I start by making new tools to work with, from brushes to easels. I spend a lot of time visualising and planning the work I’m about to

I design the frames for my paintings, but they don’t always need one – oil paint is a hard-wearing medium and an unframed finish often suits a modern space

SOME PEOPLE SAY MY PAINTINGS LOOK LIKE STONE OR MARBLE. To me, each piece is a landscape painting, nature’s beauty distilled and rearranged into its most basic forms: light, colour and space. Think of it as a reflection in a puddle – you might not even notice it until somebody points it out to you. That’s what I’m trying to do through my art.

STYLE THROWBACK
THEN… AND NOW
1944
Every issue in our centenary year, we’re dipping into our archive to find an inspiring image and put a modern spin on the look
FEATURE MICHELA COLLING
THE ORIGINAL This space may be missing pattern, but there is still plenty of statement being made with the strong but simple shapes of the furniture and accessories. The pelmet and pleats, curved, lacquered sideboard and sugary palette all echo elements of 1940s Hollywood glamour that found its way across the pond. THE UPDATE The colour pairing of powder blue and rose quartz has made a comeback this year and these pastel tones have become synonymous with a soft but chic look. Curves, scalloped edges, ribbed finishes and clean, sculpted shapes, teamed with polished brass accents, have all been re-worked into a modern glam style for today.

PAINT WALLS A WARM TONE
2840 Wood-burning stove, £1,499, Morsø
Using a palette of one colour works well in a small space as nothing jars, creating a calm
feel. Start with the sofa, then choose a paler shade for the walls. Build up the colour story with complementary cushions, introducing subtle pattern.

LIVING ROOM SCREEN OFF YOUR TELEVISION
Recreate this screen using Ribba black frames, £6 each, Ikea
Turn your TV into wall art with this DIY screen. These A4 black picture frames have been hinged together to create two doors, which are attached to a frame. The nature-themed prints are in just two colours, so it has a calm, cohesive feel.
HANG WRAPAROUND CURTAINS At one time, curtain poles for bay windows had to be bespoke, but now there is a whole range of affordable solutions – from bendable tracks to adjustable corner joints. You’ll find lots at John Lewis & Partners and Dunelm.
William Morris Compton Midnight curtains, from £49.45 for a madeto-measure set with light-filtering standard lining, Curtains 2go Juula large handtufted graphic rug, £299, Made

furniture. A colour-block design like this is bang on trend and the mix of shades offers plenty of choice for coordinating with other accessories, such as cushions.
Walls in Mazarine and Wood Ash absolute matt emulsion, both ÂŁ47 for 2.5ltr, Little Greene
TRY A CLEVER PAINT EFFECT Painting a wide band of a contrasting colour halfway up the wall gives the illusion of
more height in the room. What’s more, you can extend the paintwork out to include a freestanding shelving unit, making it blend in completely.
LIVING ROOM Decorative circular wall art, £129, Barker and Stonehouse
CREATE A PLATE DISPLAY Style up a corner by grouping art and favourite pieces. Arrange plates and platters taking inspiration from this 3D-effect artwork, which is all the more striking hung against the rich-toned wall.
MAKE A GALLERY WALL When displayed above a sideboard or sofa, a gallery wall is a great focal point. Pick similar frame colours to the furniture and make sure they are spaced evenly but not too far apart. Choosing prints with similar tones gives a harmonious feel.
Landskrona three-seater sofa, £695, Ikea

Metod Series Classic Max kitchen in Valmuefrø, from £116 for a door front; Reflect handles, £21 each, all Noremax
KITCHEN & DINING UPDATES There’s a lot you can do to refresh your kitchen and dining area without an expensive refit. Your new look starts here…
SWAP YOUR DOOR FRONTS Got an Ikea kitchen? Still have the original plans? Noremax makes bespoke door fronts
for Ikea Metod and Faktum kitchen carcasses in a wide range of colours and styles, perfect for giving your cabinetry a stylish refresh.
KITCHEN & DINING Soprano pendants, £75 each, Pooky
INSTALL FOCUSED LIGHTING Updating your lighting is relatively simple and will give your kitchen a whole new look. Use the interior designer trick of always going for an odd number (we love the rule of three) when hanging pendants over a dining table or kitchen island for a smart, balanced effect.
UPCYCLE PLAIN FURNITURE For a quick revamp, why not paint the legs of your table and seating in a contrasting colour? Quick and easy to do – especially if you use chalk paint, which doesn’t require any prep – it’ll add a splash of colour to a neutral scheme. Try Annie Sloan for a wide choice of shades.
CHANGE YOUR TAP
Kintampo kitchen tap in Black, £184.99, Dowsing & Reynolds
Switch your standard chrome kitchen tap for a sleek and sexy matt black version for an instant upgrade. It would look perfect in a monochrome kitchen, add depth to a plain scheme or create a sharp contrast in a colourful space.

Slatted fence panels are a quick and easy way to create a striking headboard. All you need to do is cut the panel to size, then sand it to remove any rough edges, before painting it in your chosen shade. Apply a second coat, if needed, then secure it to the wall.
CONTROL THE LIGHT If you want to block out the light in the morning so you can sleep longer, you don’t have to go for dark-coloured curtains. By simply adding a blackout lining to existing curtains or replacing your curtains with a made-to-order set that have the lining built in, you can still choose lighter shades.
SQUEEZE IN A MONOCHROME TOUCH

BEDROOM MAKE A HEADBOARD SHELF
Evans spot cushion cover, £18 for two, Maisons du Monde. Babouche estate emulsion, £47.95 for 2.5ltr, Farrow & Ball, is a similar shade
Consider adding a false wall behind your bed frame. As well as creating a headboard for the bed, this handy feature will also provide you with an instant shelf for books and accessories. This idea works particularly well in a small or awkwardly shaped bedroom.
CREATE A BIG REVEAL If your wardrobe doors often end up being left wide open, make a feature of them by painting the interior. Adding bold colour in this unexpected way is easy to do, yet makes a big impact. Grand Popinjay wardrobe, £1,095, Loaf
SWEETEN YOUR SUITE WITH UPLIFTING HUES A simple way to brighten up plain furniture is to add a dash of colour – a jolly lamp does the trick nicely. This two-tone beauty is the perfect size for a small bedside table, but it would look just as good on a desk or sideboard, too.

LAY PATTERNED FLOORING With all the white sanitaryware, bathrooms tend to look quite sterile. Consider laying vinyl flooring to bring in some warmth. A great choice for a family bathroom, this design is reminiscent of Victorian tiles, but as it’s vinyl, it’s cheaper and much easier to lay.
ADD SOME WOW WITH A COLOURED BASIN Up the ante with a new washbasin in a funky shade. The compact size of this one makes it a fabulous choice for a cloakroom and it stands out against the dark-toned tiles.
OPT FOR UNUSUAL BRASSWARE
Kagera Colour Pop bathroom tap, £129.99, Dowsing & Reynolds
Make a statement with a coloured tap. Zone in on a tone from your tiles, then select towels and accessories to match, and build up the colour scheme from there for a completely coordinated look.

HALLWAY BRIGHTEN YOUR STAIRS
Recreate this effect with Lemon Punch, Lemon Pie and Lemon Spirit matt emulsion, all from £22 for 2.5ltr, Dulux
Stair risers painted in jolly yellow shades are a great welcome when you walk in. Start with the darkest tone at the bottom, getting increasingly paler as you go up. This is a great way to use up tester pots, but if it’s emulsion paint, remember to coat with varnish afterwards.
LEAD THE WAY WITH A RUNNER A runner that starts at the front door and continues all the way up the stairs will draw the eye and lead you upwards, especially if it has a strong border like this one. It will also soften wooden stairs and keep footfall noise to a minimum.
Try the Dart runner, from around £924 (not including stair rods), Roger Oates Design
HANG STATEMENT LIGHTING If your hallway is really small, with no room for furniture, then make a feature of the lighting instead. Choose a standout pendant light like this one that will add impact as soon as you walk through the door. Web brass five-drop ceiling light, £160, Habitat
