COME ON IN!
ABOUT ME I’m Chloe Roberts, 34, a commercial manager. I live here with my husband Adam, 37, who works in marketing, and our son Hector, two. OUR HOME An Edwardian four-bed semi-detached house in east London. We moved here in 2017. WHEN WE MOVED IN We loved the location, but the layout felt dark and disjointed, and didn’t work for us. AND NOW We’ve created an open-plan kitchen, dining and living space that’s now the hub of the home. We also raised the upstairs ceilings into the loft space, so the house feels light, airy and spacious. STYLE TIP Think about how you will use the space. We debated long and hard about a utility and downstairs loo, both of which have turned out to be essential with a little one.

STYLE EVOLVE’
Renovating their semi-detached gave Chloe and Adam a blank canvas to create a family home that’s stylish and functional
IDEA TO STEAL
‘Brighten up an unused fireplace with vases or baskets filled with greenery’
T
his house ticked all the boxes,’ says Chloe, of the first time she and her husband Adam viewed the four-bedroom semi in east London. ‘We loved the large hallway and view of the garden as soon as you walked in, plus the house is in a quiet cul-de-sac, with off-street parking, good transport links to the centre of town and two high streets for shopping nearby, and the back garden looks out on to open grassland. However, we knew it would require a fair bit of work and investment to get the layout and interior working exactly the way we wanted it.
Making plans The idea was for us to move up the housing ladder ahead of starting a family. We wanted the next move to be for at least five to 10 years, so it needed to suit all our future plans. We weren’t averse to a project, either, having previously renovated our two-bed flat. Although we could see the potential of this house, we kept an open mind at first and still carried on looking at other properties, but our thoughts kept on returning to it… we just had to view it one more time. As soon as we walked in, both of us could imagine ourselves here, even though the layout and decor at the time wasn’t right for us.

We moved in during March 2017 and had originally planned to live in the house for a few months before hiring architect, Peter Lancaric, to design a replacement side extension. But just a couple of weeks after moving in, we found out I was expecting Hector, so we had to get started on making changes straight away! The property had been a family home for 50 years, but didn’t reflect the way our generation now lives. We wanted the living, dining and cooking space to be

SOCIABLE SPACE
‘Not having room for a full island, we went for a peninsula to create a room divide between the kitchen and dining area’
‘TO BALANCE THE USE OF BLACK BRICKS, GO LIGHT ELSEWHERE – ASH FLOORING AND PALE GREY UNITS HELP TO MAINTAIN A LIGHT, AIRY SPACE’ really sociable, while still being functional. The architects helped with suggested layouts and ideas to better utilise the entire space. Our project was relatively simple, but it was their involvement and advice which made the most of the house and created much more usable space. I would definitely say, never underestimate the impact of a good architect, especially if you are significantly changing the layout.
Black and white theme The new extension was combined with the old lounge and kitchen to create one large communal family space, as well as a small utility and loo. It’s been a huge success, making this space our favourite part of the house and where

we spend most time as a family. When the side wall came out, we could see how big the living area was going to be, which was great. We opted to bring the black bricks – which form the back of the house along with white render – into the living area as an alternative to using reclaimed brick. Seeing the black brickwork go up was a real high; it made our riskiest decision so worth it. This then laid the foundations for the monochrome theme that continued throughout the rest of the house.
Utilising the space Another big project was in the hallway where the open-tread staircase was moved from the centre of the house to the party wall. This was a fairly big

decision, but gave us much more usable space, so we felt in the long term it would be worth it – even though it meant having to move out for six weeks. So we were nomads for a while, despite me being eight months pregnant. With hindsight, I wouldn’t undertake a renovation again while pregnant – although it definitely gave us motivation to finish as soon as possible!
Boosting light levels
Upstairs the work wasn’t too major. The old bathroom was rather cramped, so we extended it slightly into the adjoining
nursery, so we could make it larger and create our dream bathroom. Having used part of the nursery space, we then decided to raise the ceiling into the loft, making the room double height and installing a roof light. A glazed panel above the door helps to utilise this light to illuminate the stairs and landing. We ended up having to order light fittings over and over as we kept getting the wrong ones – this was because we created sloped ceilings when we opened up the loft area. There were so many decisions to make. Although we gave ourselves enough time to research

Do it! STENCIL STAIRS
1
Measure your stair riser and source a stencil where the full portion of the design will fit the space – it may need to be trimmed to fit. Start with a test piece. Use a card template the same size as the riser and try out the placement of your design, checking the spacing, and practise applying the paint. Mask off any surrounding areas with decorator’s tape. Paint your base coat – if using chalk paint, there’s no need to paint a primer. Once dry, paint a second coat. Next, tape your stencil in place using low-tack tape to hold it

steady. Start in the centre of the stair riser and work your way out to either edge, using the markers supplied on the stencil to line up the repeat. Using a stencil brush or small dense foam roller, apply your top coat colour. Build up layers gradually, applying light pressure to avoid paint seepage and messy edges. The stronger the finish, the more layers you apply. Remove the stencil. Use a detail brush to neaten edges. Once dry, coat with a sealant wax or varnish. Check out Annie Sloan and Dizzy Duck Designs for both stencil designs and brushes and sponge rollers.

RUSTIC EDGE
‘We exposed one wall back to brick and went with a fun wallpaper print on another’
Do it!
EXPOSED BRICKWORK
Revealing the original bricks can be a bold look and will be the focal point of the room, so keep to just one section of wall, such as a chimney breast or inside alcoves. If you’re doing the work yourself, you’ll need to use a hammer and trowel to take off the plaster. It’s best to drill a test hole first to check the colour of bricks and what condition they’re in. Next, use a stiff brush to remove excess plaster or cement and then vacuum the wall. Brickwork will only need sealing if it’s to be in a moisture-prone kitchen or bathroom, as sealing will alter the colour and look of brickwork and can’t be reversed. As an alternative, consider faking it with brick slips, which are thin sections of brick that are glued onto the wall just like tiles. Faux brick-effect wallpaper can also look quite convincing, too.

In terms of further improvements, we’ll keep building on each of the rooms. We started with a fairly simple, neutral scheme, which we can develop as we live in it and let our style grow organically. As for a larger project, we plan to decorate the cellar one day. It’s a large, deep area and wouldn’t take much to create great storage. With that in mind, we didn’t put the loo under the stairs so we could extend the stairs down into the cellar, if necessary. But at the moment, this house is just perfect for us and we have no plans to move any time soon!’ Find more clever ideas to style up your home by going to pinterest.com/ styleathomemag

‘Our new build IDEA TO STEAL
IN BLOOM
‘I love having flowers around, either faux or fresh. They add colour and bring any room to life’
COME ON IN!
ABOUT ME I’m Jessica Turner, 29, an interior stylist (@inside.number2). I live with my partner Matt, 30, and our daughter Olivia, four. MY HOME A three-bed detached new build in Wymondham, Norfolk. We moved here in November 2016. WHEN WE MOVED IN The kitchen and bathrooms were fitted and the floors were laid, but the walls were white, there were no light fittings and the garden was mostly mud. AND NOW I’ve decorated every room with tranquil greys and glam accessories. We’ve laid a patio and added seating, so the garden is like an extension of the house. STYLE TIP An ottoman bed is a great solution if you’ve got limited space but need extra storage.

‘We’ve had our simple, pale grey sofas a while and I knew they’d suit this house. The dark grey velvet chair dials up the colour scheme’
Jessica discovered a knack for beautiful, budget-friendly interiors as she remodelled her blank new build into an inviting, glamorous home

efore it was even built, Jessica felt certain she’d love her new house. ‘The design is virtually identical to the home I grew up in, so I knew it would feel comfortable and familiar, and the space would flow well,’ says Jessica. ‘Matt and I had viewed quite a few houses before a friend, who was buying on this development, suggested we came to have a look. ‘We were keen on a new build because I think they’re good value and we could benefit from the Help to Buy scheme. This house is on a corner plot, so it’s got a lovely big garden. It’s a bit quirky and different from most of the others we’d been to see and I just fell in love with it.
Off-plan plans We were buying off-plan, and once we’d reserved the property, Matt and I, and our baby daughter Olivia, all moved in with Matt’s parents. They kindly let us stay for several months, while the house was built. It was tricky at times not having our own space, but it was worth it as it meant we could save hard for all the final touches and things we’d need.

In the months leading up to moving-in day, there were so many decisions to make. We had to choose our carpets, flooring, kitchen cabinets and worktops, and bathroom suites and tiles, all from a huge catalogue. The most challenging aspect was getting the look we wanted within our budget. The house price included standard kitchen and bathroom fixtures, with the option to pay extra and upgrade to more interesting or higher-spec choices. Matt and I are

quite organised, so we knew what we could afford and we managed to stay nicely on budget with our selection until it came to the kitchen. We just didn’t like any of the cabinets in our price range. Eventually we agreed we’d go for some pricier, but much more stylish, white units and wood-look work surfaces that we really liked. It was worth stretching our finances, as the kitchen-diner is such a hard-working room, and it’s where we spend most of our time.
Clever compromise The trade-off was probably the bathrooms, where we decided to install the most inexpensive fixtures
and tiles. They look fine and they do the job perfectly well, but style-wise I’d love to change them at some point in the future for something more interesting.
LIGHTEN UP
‘A half-glazed door spreads light around the house and makes the space feel bigger’
Sophisticated glamour All the walls were painted white before we moved in, so the house seemed quite stark and empty at first. To be honest, I’d never really given interiors much thought before, but once I had my own home I started scrolling through Pinterest and Instagram, looking at how other people had decorated similar properties, and putting together my own mood boards. My interest has grown so much that I’d say that dressing my home is now my

number one hobby! I quickly discovered that greys are my go-to palette. I’ll layer up dark and light tones with lots of white, and add a few cushions or some faux flowers for a hint of soft pink, violet or green to lift things. I tend to shy away from bold colour though, and prefer to work in different textures like velvets, linens and knits to create interest. I like my home to feel calm and grown up, with a smooth flow from room to room. My look is definitely quite glamorous too, and I think that works well in a brand-new, pristine house. I love smart, eye-catching lighting, strong accessories and shiny, reflective elements like polished chrome, glass and mirrors.

LAYER NEUTRALS Choose a colour scheme in hues of soft grey and off-white as a starting point – combining three or four similar shades and keeping to them throughout your home will create a harmonious feel. Mix in natural textures to add depth and interest to your neutral scheme. Stripped wood, linen, rattan and wool are good options to consider. A soft accent colour, such as blush pink or sage green, works well for a gentle, sophisticated look. Black will add a smart edge and a bolder hue will bring energy.

new-generation latex and foam options are becoming more popular. The only way to decide what’s right for you is to try them out. Shop with your partner and lie on the bed for at least 10 minutes to check it’s comfy and big enough. If you’re buying online, look for suppliers offering a 100-day trial period. ABOUT ME I’m Beth Ballard, 39, previously a visual display designer. I now care for my son Ned, who has autism. I live here with Ned, six, and my husband Dave, 42, a student services co-ordinator. OUR HOME A three-bedroom semidetached property built in 1926, in Wakefield, West Yorkshire. We bought the property in April 2015. WHEN WE MOVED IN Visually it wasn’t us at all – paisley wallpaper and very little character. But I liked the garden, it had a nice feel. AND NOW The interior is decorated with a mix of my love of mid-century modern and 60s/70s kitschy decor. eing priced out of anything in London (even a garage!), we decided to move away, to be able to provide a more stable future for my son Ned, who has autism,’ says Beth. ‘We were both lucky enough to get job transfers to West Yorkshire, and I knew Wakefield vaguely, having visited for work previously. ‘I’d moved house a lot as a child, so the concept of relocating was very normal to me, and just deciding one day to move to Wakefield didn’t seem odd. I’m fortunate that Dave, who had never moved far from his family home, is very easy-going.
Finding our new home
This was the first of 11 properties I saw over a weekend of viewings. It had such a lovely feel, and I could see beyond the boring magnolia walls and lack of character. As we were making the step from rented accommodation to buying our own home, my wish list was realistic; I just wanted three bedrooms, some garden space, and to be situated in a nice area. This house seemed to tick all those boxes, and I knew it was a project we could do on our own terms, to turn it into a fantastic family home.
Making it our own
Once a specialist builder had done some of the basic renovation, including rewiring the electrics, we set about decorating. To start with it was just a case of overriding the existing decor in neutral shades, turning every room into a blank canvas while we decided what look we wanted to go for. I have one regret and that’s not redoing the plumbing when we first moved in. The radiators drive me mad as they’re proportionally wrong for the rooms, as do the knocking pipes under the floorboards. However, we’ve got used to it and it wasn’t on our initial budget list.

Our budget for the whole house was minimal, so we did most of the work ourselves, which meant it took longer than expected. The front room was the first we tackled, so that once that room was finished we’d have somewhere to escape to and switch off in the evenings. After that we headed into the dining room and fitted the B&Q laminate flooring ourselves, which we’re really proud of. I love the pattern; it almost looks like original wood flooring. We’ve not got the budget at the moment to extend the kitchen – ideally I’d like a skylight – so we did a mini-makeover on the space by covering the old cupboard doors with Fablon, and fitting new worktops and

Cheats and tricks
The landing and staircase were my last project and I wanted something different. The idea for using book pages to decorate with came from an Instagrammer, @starrybecky, who had done something similar. The end result was worth the 10 months it took me to finish, and cost very little. The bathroom was a complete revamp we did after our new boiler leaked. We hired trades to fit the suite and tile the walls as it was such a big job. We have awful walls and while

Instead we used Anaglypta which is very cost-effective and it helps cover a multitude of wall sins, while adding texture. I was nervous when I put it up in the hallway, but I love how it transformed the space; likewise in our master bedroom, it’s all painted one colour, but the woven paper adds just a touch of texture and helps avert eyes from bumpy walls.
Choosing mid-century
My love of the mid-century modern look is definitely inspired by my grandparents’ homes, which were brimming with teak furniture and bold patterns, and full of

I ve always been drawn to that look when decorating my own space, and although I was conscious that my 60s/70s kitschy decor preference wasn’t really in keeping with the age of the house, I wanted our home to reflect our personality. As a result, we’ve added to the eclectic furniture we already had and simply ignored the period the house was built in. That didn’t mean ripping out original features, but just not being restricted by them. We then introduced modern touches to get a balance that’s right for us.

If you have a collection of plates you’d like to display, make templates by putting the plates on paper, drawing around the circumference and then cutting them out. Use your templates to plan your layout – you can stick them onto the wall with masking tape and rearrange them until you’re happy with how it looks. As a rule of thumb, to make the most effective display, keep the gaps between the plates the same distance and choose an odd number of plates to hang. Use a drill to make a hole in the wall through each paper template. Pop a Rawlplug into each hole, then twist in a screw, leaving it proud of the wall so you can hang the plate. Remove the paper templates. Pop the plates into wire plate hangers and hang on the wall from the hooks at the back.

This vibrant look is a celebration of artisan block prints, Scandi-inspired folk art and a rainbow of uplifting colours
Why it works
For a festival feel, prettify a space with colourful cushions and rugs, then add handmade flower garlands and lanterns
the STYLE RULES LAYER UP THE TABLE Create an inviting dining space by dressing a kitchen table with beautiful ceramics featuring delicate folksy florals. Layer up with co-ordinating linens and jugs filled with flowers. EMBRACE A COUNTRY FEEL Install white tongue-and-groove panelling halfway up walls. Paint the upper section candy pink. Try livening up a preloved dining table by painting the legs in a similar hue.
CELEBRATE PATTERN Mix and match patterned textiles in sorbet shades. Look for block printed repeats on cushions and curtains. Using the same fabric in different colourways creates cohesion. LINK THE INSIDE AND OUTSIDE A hardwearing, easy-to-clean vinyl or laminate is practical for spaces that lead on from the garden. Choose similar materials for inside and out to create a seamless look.
STYLE AT HOME SAYS… ‘The bright pink feature wall, the pink table legs and the green curtain give this look depth, and bring out the colours used on the accessories.’ STYLE EDITOR

the STYLE RULES FOCUS ON A MURAL Create impact with a wallpaper mural of giant painterly florals in cool neutrals with inky accents. Use a tonal shade elsewhere in the room. MIX FINE ART WITH ETHNIC TEXTILES Contrast floral patterns with geometric print cushions. Stick to a monochrome palette and arrange on a light grey sofa. A corner design is ideal for big families and awkward spaces.
PARE IT BACK Take inspiration from Scandinavian design with furniture that has simple shapes and sleek silhouettes. Keep styling to a minimum, embracing natural materials such as a textured woven pouffe and a wooden coffee table. SOFTEN THE LOOK A soft and cosy faux-fur rug warms up wooden flooring and helps to make a monochrome scheme feel that bit more welcoming.

Why it works the STYLE RULES MIX UP VINTAGE PRINTS Be daring with a floral patterned sofa and armchair in classic shapes, then arrange cushions featuring mismatched prints, plains and polka dots. Pick designs in similar colourways to pull it together. KEEP THE SCHEME FRESH Team nostalgic floral prints with white painted walls and simple white furniture. Full-length white shutters are a smart addition to windows.
PRETTIFY A WORK SPACE Accessorise a sleek desk with ditsy floral stationery, such as decorative folders and a flowery mug used as a pen pot. Try making a matching Roman blind in a vintage floral print. PICK LIGHT FLOORING Go for a cream carpet in a living area and add further comfort with a chunky textured rug. In higher-traffic areas, pick a whitewashed effect wood vinyl or laminate.

the STYLE RULES GO BOLD WITH PAINTERLY BLOOMS Mural wallpapers are an on-trend way of creating a statement backdrop in any room. Watercolour florals in a sugary palette of pinks, purple and yellows are perfect for bedrooms. CO-ORDINATE BEDDING Make your statement wall the backdrop for a tall wooden bed frame laden with matching floral bedding. Add a further splash of colour with a
popping yellow velvet throw at the foot of the bed. GO WHITE ON WALLS AND FLOORS Ensure bold florals stand out by keeping the rest of the room light with white walls and a neutral carpet. ADD COLOUR POP PICKS When it comes to accessories and lighting, source pieces in co-ordinating shades. INVEST IN A STATEMENT BED Make an upholstered button detail bed frame in ochre velvet the focal point of a bedroom, then set about making it extra homely with pillows in smaller-scale floral patterns and tactile waffle throws. CREATE A VINTAGE VIBE Use an antique side table as a nightstand and style with a black metal task lamp. Hang glass frames with black and white photos above the bed.
UPDATE A COUNTRY SCHEME Choose traditional medium-scale floral wallpaper in a contemporary palette of yellows and greys. EMBRACE FLOORBOARDS If you’re lucky enough to have original wooden floorboards, give them a good sand followed by several coats of clear varnish for an authentic cottage look. Lay a neutral woven rug by the bed to greet toes when you get out of bed.

ABOUT ME I’m Jade Rodrigues, 30, a product developer, and I live here with my partner Darren Wimhurst, 38, a financial services provider. We have a three-bedroom Victorian terrace in southeast London, which we bought in 2013. MY CHALLENGE The kitchen is long and narrow with a low ceiling. It was also an absolute mess with broken cupboards and drab magnolia walls, so there was a lot to work on! MY WISH LIST Extending wasn’t an option, so the plan was to open up the back wall to let in more light and then reverse the original layout to create two distinct areas for cooking and relaxing.

MUCH BIGGER!’
Reversing the layout and installing French doors to the garden has made Jade’s skinny kitchen feel light, bright and a lot more spacious
A
s I absolutely love cooking and entertaining, the kitchen is the most important room,’ says Jade Rodrigues. ‘I was delighted when we viewed this house because the kitchen was a good size, but in a real state, with broken cupboards and dirty magnolia walls. ‘When we first moved in, we didn’t have a bedroom so we had to prioritise that and the living space before we started on the kitchen, but the upside was that we had lots of time to analyse exactly what we wanted from the kitchen. I spent hours on Pinterest and looking through interiors mags, making notes about what we liked. We sketched out our plans and once we knew what we wanted, it was just about making that happen within our budget.
Deciding on the layout
The kitchen is situated in the side return of the house. It’s long and narrow with a low ceiling, so there was limited light and it felt tunnel-like. A side-return extension wasn’t an option for us and we were advised that the layout was best suited to a galley-style kitchen. However, we were keen to create space by the garden, where we could relax and socialise while cooking and eating, so we went with our instincts and opened up the back wall, installing French doors to give us more light and a better view of the garden. We also decided to reverse the kitchen layout to create two distinct areas – one for cooking and one for relaxing – separated by a peninsula-style breakfast bar.
MODERN EDGE
‘We went for painted units in a modern blue-black colourway, white tiles and worktops teamed with patterned floor tiles that link the two colours’

SHELF SPACE
‘We opted for shelves instead of wall units to keep the narrow space from closing in on us’
keep the look traditional, in line with the Victorian style of the house, but modern, too. So we chose traditional kitchen units in a fresh colourway, an old-style butler sink but in industrial stainless steel, a contemporary range cooker against an exposed brick chimney and traditional metro tiles arranged in an eye-catching herringbone format.
Doing it ourselves
As it was part of a bigger house project, the kitchen was completed in stages – the electrics and plumbing were done at the same time as other rooms, but the main work took three months. We took on the planning, sourcing the building materials and arranging tradesmen, so we had to design and measure everything, from the window and doors to the kitchen units and tiles. We also saved money by removing the old kitchen, cleaning the chimney bricks and painting the walls and woodwork ourselves.
Finishing touches
The peninsular unit has open shelves to allow light to pass through. It’s a long room, so to break it up we laid wooden flooring in the living area and patterned floor tiles in the kitchen – the seating area gives us another lounge space. The finished room is just how we envisaged it so I’m glad we had the courage to design the layout to suit us. We often work long hours and come home to spend time in the kitchen, cooking and chatting, so it was important for us to achieve this.’

HERRINGBONE SPLASHBACK Plan the layout on paper or card. Take your first tile and use a tile cutter to cut at 45 degrees from one corner to the opposite edge. Lay the angled cut of your first tile along the bottom line. Place the next (full) tile against the top edge of the first, so the bottom corner touches the base line. Mark and measure a triangle to sit inside the two tiles. Work out both ways from the centre. Draw a vertical line on your wall, mark the midpoint use a spirit level to draw a vertical line. Apply the tile adhesive (follow instructions), apply the tiles, then clean the tile surface. Leave to set (follow instructions) before grouting. Clean off any excess, then buff the surface.

MARBLE-LOOK WORKTOPS
Jade’s choice:
MARBLE-LOOK WORKTOPS Get the luxe look of marble without breaking the bank or fretting over stains
How can I achieve a quick refresh? If your worktops are sound, you can cover them in a marble-look self-adhesive vinyl in minutes. Supplied on rolls and heat resistant to 75°C, it takes patience to apply (check YouTube tutorials), but is effective. Fold the film under the front edge of your worktop for a neat finish, invest in a sharp scalpel and use sealant around the sink.
Laminate for the win? The next cheapest marble-look option is laminate, which is scuff, scratch and stain
BEST FOR… LOW FUSS
Quartz-Lite fits 8mm-thick quartz worktops over existing surfaces for a quick refresh without having to rip out your old ones. It is cut to fit.
SPEEDY INSTALL
Minerva’s silky-soft solid surfaces can be cut using normal woodworking tools, saving time and money on templating. The Carrara White marble-inspired design is made from polymer resins so scratches and stains can be buffed out.
DESIGN CHOICE
Bushboard offers a huge catalogue of quartz and laminate worktops. The innovative Evolve solid laminate features hardened resin, making it strong and waterproof.
resistant. Thanks to improved HD print quality and textured finishes, the latest laminate worktops are impressive marble imitations. Choose laminate with a square edge for extra authenticity. Installation is far quicker and cheaper than stone and you can buy matching laminate splashbacks and upstands, too.
Quartz or acrylic – how do they differ? If you have more cash to splash, these man-made composite materials come in seriously convincing marble designs. Quartz surfaces have a higher mineral content, while acrylic (aka solid surfaces) have more resin. Quartz (popular brands include Caesarstone, Silestone and Radianz) is arguably tougher and more stain resistant, but acrylic composites, such as Corian, Minerva and LG Hi-Macs, can be seamlessly shaped and allow most scratches to be buffed out.
FAUX-MARBLE WORKTOPS ROCK-HARD QUARTZ Lucerne lake composite quartz, from £280sq m, Radianz
Any tips for boosting the realistic feel? Whatever material you choose, the trick is to avoid obvious repeats in the marble vein pattern that will immediate flag it up as man-made. Try to match the veining so that it flows naturally between horizontal and vertical surfaces (like the front edge of worktops and splashbacks).

ABOUT ME I’m Lucinda Holt, 43 (@peacockfinds) and I live here with my husband Sam, 44, and our children Lola, eight, and twins Violet and Ruby, six, in a fivebedroom, detached new-build house near Preston in Lancashire. We moved here in September 2018 and carried out the bathroom revamp the following spring. MY CHALLENGE Being a new build, the bathroom lacked character and colour. My husband and I have quite different tastes, so agreeing on a design we both loved took ages. MY WISH LIST I wanted to add more personality to the space, so had my heart set on panelling, with wallpaper above and a bold paint colour on the bath.

fter having our twins, we were keen to move out of London and decided on Lancashire, where I’m from,’ says Lucinda. ‘Although we’d never lived in a new build before, a small local developer was planning eight detached homes near Preston, so we reserved a plot off plan. ‘Being close to the motorway and airport, it was ideal for Sam to travel for his job managing musicians and DJs, and since I’m a freelance social media and marketing consultant, I can work anywhere. Once we’d sold our London house, we moved in with my mum while our new home was finished off. This meant we could choose the layout and fittings for the bathroom, two en suites and ground floor loo. We were supposed to be there for five weeks but it turned into five months as we wanted to upgrade lots of things rather than go with the builder’s spec on everything.

Luckily, we were able to specify the layout in the square family bathroom. We positioned the bath behind the door for privacy and tucked the loo away by the window furthest from the door. We could have chosen a more modern look with a rectangular bath, but we wanted to inject some character. That’s why we picked a 1930s-style suite from the builder’s preferred supplier, James Hargreaves, with a free-standing bath, vanity unit and shower cubicle. There were loads of options and the developer got us a good discount. I was even able to pick the same marble mosaic floor tiles we’d had in London as I loved them so much. To upcycle a cast iron or acrylic bath, start by removing any rust or flaked enamel and thoroughly clean the surface. Cover the floor. If you have an acrylic bath, remove the feet or tape them up to protect them, and turn the bath upside down. Rub the surface of the bath with fine sandpaper and wipe to remove any dust. Apply at least two coats of primer, such as Zinsser B-I-N white primer sealer, lightly sanding between each coat. For a matt finish, use an eggshell or chalk-based paint. Apply two or three coats using a quality paintbrush or small foam roller. For chalk paint, finish with a coat of lacquer or finishing coat to protect against water splashes.

‘DON’T BE AFRAID TO USE WALLPAPER IN A BATHROOM – THESE DAYS THERE ARE PLENTY OF STYLISH, WASHABLE OPTIONS AVAILABLE’ sink, but the builders insisted on it. Ideally, we wanted tongue-and-groove panelling fitted, too, but the project was running behind so the builders said no.
Choosing the style
Seven months after moving in, we started phase two of the bathroom and the panelling went in. Sam wasn’t keen on my idea of floral wallpaper on the top half, though, and he vetoed a peacock design I’d picked out, too, then a zebra design I loved was discontinued. Finally, I came across a botanical design in the sales that Sam loved as much as me. Next, we chose paint colours for the panelling, bath and vanity unit. I always get tester pots and do a hashtag search on Instagram to see how other people have used the same shade. Eventually we picked grey-blue for the panelling and coral for the bath. Our plans meant undoing some of the builders’ work, such as removing the splashback tiles, taking out a shaver point we didn’t need and ripping out skirting boards. However, our joiner managed to install the panelling without taking the suite out and I was able to do the priming and painting myself. Now, I’m considering painting the ceiling peach to finish it off.’

BATHROOM WALLPAPER
Lucinda’schoice: WALLPAPER IN THE BATHROOM Make a pattern splash by papering a wall
Is wallpaper suitable for my bathroom? It definitely depends on your bathroom but if it’s properly ventilated, with an opening window and/or adequate extractor fan for the size of the room, wallpaper is absolutely game-on. Keep it away from direct contact with water, though – papering right next to the bath, vanity or shower is asking for trouble.
Which type of wallpaper do I need? Study the labels – wallpaper on rolls will note the correct use. Look for words like ‘scrubbable’, usually for papers made of heavyweight vinyl or vinyl coated. ‘Extra washable’ or ‘highly wash resistant’ will cope well with the odd splash. Specialist kitchen and bathroom wallpaper collections are obviously a safe bet.
USEFUL INFO… COSTS
Wallpaper is usually sold on 10m rolls from under £10 up to £150+. Don’t forget to budget for tools and adhesives. It costs around £160 a day for a professional to do.
PREPARATION
Damp walls must be treated, cracks filled and gloss-painted surfaces lightly sanded. New plaster must be ‘sized’ using wallpaper primer.
INSPIRATION
Style Library is a hub for Zoffany, Harlequin, Sanderson, Morris & Co, Scion and Anthology.
92 | JULY 2020
How can I make it hardier? If you are lusting after a non-vinyl paper that’s rated ‘spongeable’ or not rated for cleaning at all, consider adding your own protective layer of vinyl using Polyvine Decorators Varnish (£17.95 for 1ltr). Go for the dead flat version, which won’t alter the paper’s colour, and always do a test patch first. Don’t forget to add the cost to your wallpapering budget.
Is wallpaper safe inside my shower? No, but you can get 100% waterproof wallcoverings that look like wallpaper and don’t have the grout problems associated with tiles – try Wall&Decò Wet System, available from West One Bathrooms (westonebathrooms.com). It’s pretty expensive, though, and requires specialist installation. A far cheaper option is to wallpaper behind a sealed glass shower enclosure or screen.

TROPICAL BUDGET WALLPAPERS
Can I put paper on all the walls? Yes, as long as you have a decent depth of tiles around the bath and basin – aim for at least 60cm between water and wallpaper. But while maximalism is on trend, bathrooms are usually small so if you’re going all-out with wallpaper, do choose a soothing design that won’t kick off your day with a headache. Following Lucinda’s lead by papering above panels is a smart choice. You can afford to go much bolder and it’s easier to keep your wallpaper away from splashes.

‘We often bring home treasures from car boot sales and reclamation yards, like this old stone bench that we installed in a sunny spot’
COME ON IN! IDEA TO STEAL
‘A tabletop fire pit creates a focal point and warmth, and is ideal for a small patio’
ABOUT ME I’m Sarah Jarman, 46, a graphic designer and enthusiastic Instagrammer @sarahjarmanalexander. I live here with my husband Paul Alexander, 50. Our home is a four-bedroom three-storey Victorian townhouse in Leeds, with an 8x10m back garden. MY CHALLENGE The fenced garden had been pretty much neglected, with just a threadbare patch of lawn, sparse planting and a slab of scruffy concrete. MY WISH LIST I wanted to create two distinct areas – a raised deck with table and chairs where we can work, eat and entertain, plus a lower lawn with borders and trees, so we can relax in the sun or find shade when it’s hot.

HIDDEN GEM’
With a little flair and imagination Sarah turned an uninspiring city garden into a calm and secluded outdoor haven
W
hen we moved in the garden was such a mess,’ says Sarah, describing the fenced back garden of her Victorian townhouse. ‘It was basically just a scrubby patch of grass with unkempt borders and gravel paths edged with broken lumps of concrete. And as there were no trees or greenery, lack of privacy was an issue, too.
Starting point We both love being outdoors and, even though the space was small, we could see it had potential and lent itself to becoming a sort of outdoor living room. The plan was to make it more private by planting trees around the perimeter and adding layers of planting at different levels. While the house was being renovated, we had two sets of French doors fitted in the kitchen, which open directly onto the garden. We then asked the builders to create a raised patio which runs seamlessly between the kitchen-diner and garden.

BLUE HUE
‘To make a statement I’ve gone for bold architectural planting in blue glazed pots’
To create a division between the raised patio and the lawn, we added a white painted rendered wall with steps leading down, which splits the sitting area from the rest of the garden. It has a wide slate top, which is perfect for perching on with scatter cushions. When it came to a table and chairs, we considered buying a basic set, but then decided we could seat more people and make the patio look a lot bigger by having built-in seats arranged in an L-shape. I came up with a design and then asked a local joiner to make them up for me, building a timber frame clad with floorboards for the seats. We tend to eat most of our meals outside during the summer, so we added a weathered dining table – which we cut

COMPACT PLANTING
‘I used slim trough planters to line the edge of the steps filled with Verbena Santos to bring a splash of colour’
Do it!
CREATE AN OUTDOOR LIVING ROOM Work with colour – paint adjoining walls and fences in a dark grey to create an inviting corner, or white paint for a fresh, Mediterranean feel in a sunny spot. Long metal planters or tall pot plants can create temporary walls to cosy up and screen the space. Opt for living room-style furniture – outdoor sofas and lounge chairs, garden side tables, coffee tables and shelving will all evoke the sense of a room. Accessorise the space as you would a living room. Bring in lanterns and tealight holders, ornaments and statement planters, an outdoor rug and cushions. Make it a place to relax in the evening with a fire pit or chiminea and hang atmospheric lighting such as string lights around the perimeter. Go for wireless outdoor lamps or a decorative wall light.
96 | JULY 2020
SHADY SPOT
‘We added the wooden pergola for privacy and planted wisteria and Rambling Rector roses to climb it and offer dappled shade’
‘FAST-GROWING CLIMBERS SUCH AS CLEMATIS MONTANA OR JASMINE CAN BE TRAINED TO COVER THE UPRIGHTS AND BEAMS OF A PERGOLA TO CREATE A SCENTED CANOPY’ LEAFY PRINT
‘There are plenty of rugs and scatter cushions to cosy up chairs and benches’
down to coffee table size – and added waterproof seat cushions and colourful scatter cushions for comfort. The area also doubles up as a work space over the summer months. I work from home and hate being cooped up inside on a hot summer’s day, but now I can set up my desk at the seating area and work outside in the warmth and fresh air, which is such a lovely bonus.
Planting for privacy To create a screen from the neighbours, we added a simple wooden pergola and lattice wood panel fitted over the original fence panels, which makes the patio area feel enclosed and more room-like. We’ve planted wisteria and a Rambling Rector rose to climb up the pergola, which gives off a beautiful scent that is particularly pungent in the evening. For easy planting, by the French doors I’ve added lots of brightly-glazed blue pots for all-year colour, filled with easy-care plants such as box and hostas, which have lovely sculptural shapes.

FEATURE HEATHER DIXON/LISA FAZZANI PHOTOGRAPHS COLIN POOLE
Reaping the benefits The far end of the garden has been grassed and the borders planted with trees and shrubs, which graduate down to the lawn. We didn’t want to lose the grass altogether as it’s really nice to sit in the deckchairs under a shady tree when it’s hot. It’s now a lovely sheltered sitting area which catches sun and shade just when you need it on a hot day. The grass and trees – which are now mature – blend with the public park behind us and make it appear larger than it really is. We also wanted to attract wildlife and it’s really nice to wake up to the sound of birdsong, even though we live in a built-up area. In the summer we spend all our time out here because we love it so much. It’s easy to forget that we actually live in the city.’ Find more clever ways to style up your home by going to pinterest.com/ styleathomemag

TRY YOUR HAND AT... MOSAIC ART
Once the focal points of ancient palaces and places of worship, mosaic art now takes a much more humble form, mostly applied to small-scale home crafts. However, the satisfying technique remains largely the same. Start by Mosaic tile drawing your design onto a solid nippers, £10, base, such as a table or piece of Hobbycraft MDF. Arrange broken tiles, pebbles and any other collected materials (known as tesserae) in your desired pattern, then stick down with strong glue. Use grout to fill the spaces between your mosaic pieces. Leave to dry before wiping away the excess to reveal your mosaic.

SAND THE SURFACE It’s very important to make sure the wood is properly prepared. Start by sanding down the surface – a lowgrade sandpaper such as P180 or P240 is ideal. Sand in the direction of the grain. DUST OFF THE TIMBER Use a cloth or brush to dust off the wood, even if it looks clean. Remember to brush across the grain as well as up and down. It will then need to be degreased with methylated spirits, using a clean, lint-free cloth while wearing gloves. DIVIDE INTO SECTIONS To create an ombre effect, use masking tape to section the surface to achieve a more precise, tidy look. Divide the fence panel into three sections – they don’t have to be the same size. PAINT THE LOWER SECTION Use masking tape to section the top edge of the lower section. Paint the lower section in any shade using Sadolin’s Superdec range – as it is self-priming, it doesn’t require a primer. Let the first layer dry, then finish with one or two extra coats depending on the coverage desired. FINISH THE UPPER SECTIONS Once the bottom section is dry, apply masking tape to the bottom edge of the top section. Paint the middle area in a different colour, applying two or three coats. When the middle section is dry, paint the top section in a lighter shade. When the fence is dry, remove the tape.
