Light is important to us, so when we found this house tucked away down a leafy street, it was its sunny aspect that we found really appealing

aving outgrown their Melbourne townhouse in 2000, Tammy and Jonathan Kanat wanted more space before their third child was born. They fell for this characterful house straight away. ‘Unfortunately, it was run-down and the space was used very inefficiently,’ says Tammy. The couple decided to completely reinvent the property and the renovation took place in two stages, with the first phase of construction taking a year to plan and another year to carry out. ‘We kept the front and side façades of the house, as it was heritage listed, then rebuilt the rest as a new two-storey home with four bedrooms,’ says Tammy. Nine years later, the ground floor was extended to include a main bedroom suite off the main living space, with a walk-in wardrobe, en-suite bathroom, and a library which doubles as Tammy’s studio. This meant the former main bedroom upstairs could became a teenage hang-out zone. ‘We have ample communal areas, but it also gives everyone the personal space they need. The kids have their upstairs zone and we have our downstairs zone.’ Tammy’s favourite room is the studio where she weaves. ‘It is a beautiful, peaceful, light-filled space.’ She collaborates with rug and furniture brands, but also hosts workshops and sells her creations through her Instagram account (@tammykanat). Décor-wise, Tammy’s style has evolved over time. ‘I like to bring the outdoors in – it creates such a calm home.’ Although the couple may downsize when the children leave home, they have no plans to move anytime soon. ‘At the end of a day, we love gathering as a family around the outdoor dining table here and watching the sun dip down over the trees.’

three-storey 1920s house in Hellerup, Copenhagen, bought in 2000.

When we first started, it was just one big open space – a gloomy, dark attic with just four windows

fter travelling for work and living in nine places over 12 years, Søren and Mette Rose and their three children returned to their 1920s house in Hellerup, Copenhagen, and saw it with fresh eyes. Finding it dark and dated, they decided to radically renovate, starting with the top floor. By converting the 120sq m space into a flat, they can live in it while they tackle the rest. ‘We wanted to create a beautiful, honest space that would outlive us,’ says Søren, founder of furniture design house Søren Rose Studio (sorenrose.com). ‘We wanted to enhance the light, and each time I stood on the scaffolding I discovered a new view to the sea, the park and over beautiful gardens. So, we ended up removing the entire roof and installing 23 double-height Velux windows, which have given the whole floor a completely different, more spacious feeling.’ Previously one large space, the beams were raised and a wall built to split it into a kitchen-diner and seating area, plus sleeping space and bathroom. ‘The only hiccup was when the carpenter found rot in four of the structural beams,’ says Søren. ‘But we were lucky, as the insurance covered the cost.’ The finish includes underfloor heating beneath bleached oak flooring, Sonos speakers in the ceilings and a lighting scheme. The renovation took six months rather than the expected three, since the roof terrace wasn’t planned from the start. ‘If you spot an opportunity, you can adapt things as you go along to make it work without changing the overall brushstrokes,’ says Søren. Inside, the backdrop is simple – plain white walls and exposed brick – with impact from designer furniture and stand-out artwork and lamps. ‘In most countries functionality is valued higher than aesthetics, but here in Denmark both need to hang together,’ says Søren. ‘I like original interiors with designs that are minimal, well crafted, raw but refined. When the rest of the house is finished, this floor could be an amazing master suite, studio or home cinema. We’ve had 12 years of moving around, so it’ll be great to have the next 12 in one place.’

THE COLOUR EDIT

WARM OCHRE This month, our colour consultants give their views on this delicious shade and how best to use it for a more beautiful home

If ochre seems overpowering, ground it by teaming it with accents of black for a sophisticated look that will appeal to classicists and mid-century modernists alike. Yellow-Pink absolute matt emulsion, ÂŁ47 for 2.5ltr; Lamp Black intelligent eggshell, ÂŁ66 for 2.5ltr, both Little Greene

WHAT THE EXPERTS SAY...

From top: Cherished Gold; Sun Dust 1 and Lucky Penny, all £29.16 for 2.5ltr paint mixing matt, Dulux

Designers and stylists share their views ■ ‘Ochre adds a happy glow to any room and is perfect for hallways or north-facing rooms that need to bring their own sunshine. Team with rich reds and brown tones to create a beautiful colour palette that changes throughout the day as different light reflects on it,’ says Lucy St George, co-founder of Rockett St George. ■ ‘It’s a colour that is warming and inviting and therefore works especially well in entrances and halls. It’s brilliant as a feature wall in bedrooms and kitchens too,’ says Paula Taylor, colour & trends specialist at Graham & Brown. ■ Try out ochre in functional rooms, such as the bathroom and kitchen. ‘It can work really well by introducing an unexpected splash of colour,’ says Dominic Myland, CEO of Mylands paint. ‘It also pairs well with dark blues, which are a popular choice for kitchen cabinets, as the warm yellow balances out the cooler blue.’ ■ Combining ochre with other colours is not as tricky as it might first seem, according to Annie Sloan: ‘For drama, pair it with strong greens in a tropical botanical setting; to dial it back, use with whites and for something between the two, team ochre with a soft black – it’s dramatic and interesting but still very liveable.’ ■ ‘Because this colour can be used as a neutral, it works well with any wood tones, oak through to mahogany, and also mixes brilliantly with warm metallics, including gold, bronze or copper,’ says Nicky Phillips, Decorating Editor at Ideal Home. ■ ‘As an earthy, grounding tone; enhance the feeling of relaxation and calm in your home by pairing with rattan chairs, woven cane side tables, bamboo furniture, wicker baskets and handmade pottery,’ says Lucy St George, co-founder of Rockett St George. ■ ‘For accent colours that ping, try raspberry or olive green, but avoid zesty lemon or lime. For a softer look, pair with earthy neutrals or warm pinks,’ says Nicky Phillips, Decorating Editor at Ideal Home.

Use uplifting shades of ochre for a yearround sunshine feel in your home. Vibrant ochre has sunny, warm, happy associations, so it’s no surprise that it works both as an eye-catching accent colour, and a way to brighten up a dingy room

The property was so run-down, no other buyers showed any interest. But that didn’t put us off!

iobhan and Rory McFadden took jobs in Edinburgh nine years ago, relocating there from Ireland. They found a two-bedroom flat on the west side of the city and settled in… until the arrival of their first child changed everything. ‘When Una was born in 2017, we needed more space. The only way we could afford our preferred location was to take on a property that needed a lot of work and we fell in love with this one’s quirks immediately. ‘The kitchen was the priority: with an old tin sink and virtually no cupboards or appliances, it was unusable. The dining room next door was small and both rooms were north-facing, so felt cold and dark. We knocked down the dividing wall and came up with a new layout. It was tough living on a building site with a toddler and we had to work hard to get it done, but three months in we had a beautiful, fully functioning kitchen. ‘Although many of the period features had been stripped away, it still retained a few and restoring the house to its former glory was important to us. We preserved character with the cornices, picture rails and architraves. We also stripped back the original flooring, reinstated the mantelpieces in the bedrooms and uncovered boarded-up fireplaces. We spent a lot on salvaged cast-iron radiators for an authentic look. ‘When it comes to decor, I love colour but prefer a neutral backdrop. It isn’t a big house, so we kept to whites, adding colour with soft furnishings and painted furniture. We worked in the evenings and at weekends, and at times it felt like slow progress, but it has been rewarding. I documented it all on Instagram (@home_stead). We have lovingly restored our little Victorian terrace, pouring so much love and energy into it, and our hard work has paid off. It’s unrecognisable!’

Kitchen ‘We knocked down the wall here to turn this and the small, dark dining room into one inviting space. We essentially built a new house within the old walls, supported by a new steel frame

hile house-hunting, Leo Wood and Rupert Scott discovered an empty warehouse for sale across the road from their Georgian cottage. Built in 1880, it had been a gin distillery, social club and a storage facility. ‘Since it was advertised as a commercial building, it dropped below the radar,’ says architect Rupert (openpracticearchitecture.com). ‘Its wedgeshaped plot, which is smaller at the front with two sides butting onto warehouses, put other buyers off.’ It took six months to buy, then two years to get planning permission. Rupert redesigned it with assistance from Morizzo Architects and the build was funded by the sale of Leo’s old flat; they stayed in their cottage while the work was carried out. ‘Working with an existing structure is one of the most eco-friendly things you can do,’ says Rupert. Inside, splitting the space into thirds unlocked its potential. The kitchen-diner is in the middle, the living area at the front, while the rear two-thirds pops out of the back. ‘There’s planning permission in place for a basement conversion, too, but we ran out of money,’ he says. For outside space, there’s a first-floor roof terrace, a west-facing front yard for barbecues and a side passage with artificial grass. ‘I love the relationship between the inside and outside,’ says Leo. ‘There’s green everywhere you look, which softens the space and connects it to nature even though we don’t have a garden as such. The way the light shifts as the sun moves round the building is the most successful part of the project.’ Leo used the experience as a springboard to a career as an interior designer (kinderdesign.co.uk). ‘We’ve achieved the simple, unfussy finish we wanted,’ says Rupert. ‘But Leo made it feel really homely.’

HOW SALI AND GRAEME DID ITÉ ‘Our top floor bedroom suite hadn’t been touched for 10 years, as we’d prioritised the children’s bedrooms and communal areas. Although it was a big space, it was blank and unloved. There was a bed plonked in the middle of the bedroom behind a high partition, so you couldn’t see who was coming up the stairs, and it lacked storage. The bathroom had basic beige tiles and was definitely due a refresh, too. There was a dressing space that was tatty and untidy, with a hanging rail and a few drawers. At first I thought we’d keep the layout as it was and ask a professional to help me choose paint colours and soft furnishings. I’d spotted the work of interior designer Anna Hewitson in a magazine (annahewitsondesign.com), IDEALHOME.CO.UK | SEPTEMBER 2020

LOFT PROJECT and felt she’d be a good fit. I loved her classic-with-acontemporary-twist style. On Anna’s advice, we did some structural work. As the ceiling slopes down to waist level, there was limited head height, so Anna suggested full-height wardrobes on the back wall, and had the old partition wall removed, so we could flip the bed around to face the stairs. She also designed my dream built-in dressing table and a home-office area for Graeme, and transformed the dressing room with drawers and storage

for shoes and bags. Another extra was air-conditioning, as it gets pretty hot up here in the summer. It was worth spending the extra to get it right. I chose a calm, neutral base colour with accents that can be changed in the future. One of the most enjoyable parts of the revamp was adding the finishing touches, which made the whole project come to life. The work took four months and cost around £50,000. The end result really took my breath away! It was even better than we’d imagined.’

BELOW ‘We couldn’t have full-height wardrobes in here due to the sloping walls,’ says Sali. ‘Instead we have open shelving for shoes and bags on the left, and a bank of drawers on the right. There are also a couple of built-in cupboards which hide practical things such as the underfloor heating controls.’ Bespoke dressing-room cabinetry, £10,000, Wellington Joinery. SALI’S CHOICE: A SEPARATE DRESSING ROOM Always dreamed of a dedicated dressing space? Discover how to make your closet fantasies a reality whatever your budget If you have the extra space, consider knocking through to a box room, erecting a partition wall if your bedroom is large enough, or using a slice of the landing.

Q

Where do I begin? You’ll need a space of at least 2m wide for a simple galley-style walk-in wardrobe. Assess how much storage you need by measuring your existing hanging rails (and factoring in future purchases) and ensure you have a good mixture of rails, shelves and drawers.

Q

What’s the best way to use the space? Floor-to-ceiling fitted furniture can increase storage space by 30 per cent. For awkwardly shaped rooms, bespoke wardrobes are best, or try Zebedee for hanging rails designed to fit sloping ceilings. Ikea’s Pax system or Spacepro at B&Q is ideal if you’re on a budget. Ask a joiner to customise off-the-peg carcasses with low-cost plywood or oriented strand board (OBS)

doors, that can be left bare or given a colour wash. Break up a run of storage with a built-in dressing table with plug points.

Q

How can I organise my clothes better? A place for everything is key. Double rails should be hung between a metre and 2m from the floor. Include pull-out tie and belt racks, dividers to organise underwear drawers and a laundry bin. Store shoes in stackable clear plastic storage.

Q

What if I don’t have a spare room? Screen off a section of your bedroom with floor-to-ceiling curtains using a ceiling track and roller curtain hooks to a dressing area. Use three or four curtains sewn together or make your own from lightweight fabric.

‘We updated a period terrace with a modern extension’ A contemporary, twostorey addition doubled the footprint of Will and Romy’s cramped Victorian cottage

AFTER

BEFORE

The house had a shabby, lean-to extension that housed a kitchen and bathroom

H

ouse sitting for friends led to a big change for Will and Romy. ‘We loved the area and realised we could afford a house here for the same price as our flat in northwest London,’ says Will. The couple bought this terrace in 2014. COMPLETE OVERHAUL The original footprint didn’t give the couple space for the kitchen-diner they were after, plus they were keen for the boys to have rooms of their own as well as wanting an office space for themselves. ‘There was an old extension with a kitchen and a bathroom, but it didn’t work for us.’ GETTING TO WORK ‘We knocked the old extension down and put a temporary kitchen in the second reception room. We worked in two phases: first we stripped everything out of the house and redid the electrics and plumbing; second, we worked on the extension to create the kitchen-diner.’ COMING TOGETHER Learning how buildings work, lead times, and how to position lighting were all challenges, but once the kitchen was in, things fell into place. ‘We now have a spacious kitchen-diner/living area, with sun shining through the roof light. It’s a fantastic space to be.’

BEFORE & AFTER Bespoke fronts on Ikea carcasses gives a high-end look on a budget

5 THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT...

Two-storey extensions Architect Sam Selencky from Selencky Parsons has the lowdown

1

THEY USE SPACE WELL You can play with height and space in a more interesting way by creating double-height or mezzanine spaces, which can add real drama and wow factor.

2

THEY’RE NOT AS EXPENSIVE AS YOU MIGHT THINK They can be a cost-effective way to add space to your house as you only need to build half the roof and half the amount of foundations for the same area gains, compared to a single-storey extension.

3

GOOD DESIGN IS KEY They’re likely to be a prominent feature, so the design needs to be carefully considered to work with the existing property in a coherent way.

A picture window makes the small upstairs office feel light and airy

4

SECURING PLANNING PERMISSION IS TRICKY… Planning permission can be hard to get as two-storey extensions can have a greater impact on neighbouring properties than single-storey ones, so position and size need to be carefully considered.

A bifold window opens up to reveal an integrated external window seat

…BUT YOU MAY NOT NEED IT You can take advantage of permitted development rights to build one without needing planning permission, but we’d always recommend you get a certificate of lawfulness before building to show that your design conforms to the rules.

WHAT WE’VE LEARNED

Think about the project both inside and out. We were so focused on spending on the interiors that we didn’t really budget for landscaping, which we regret

WHERE DO I START? ‘With something small and manageable,’ says Matt Thomas, buyer at John Lewis & Partners. ‘I always start with my wardrobe.’ Simon Glanville, MD at A Place for Everything, sets a timer for 20 minutes, tackling one drawer at a time. Professional organiser Vicky Silverthorn believes you need to change your approach and mindset to declutter successfully. ‘You may feel that the “house” is such a huge task to fix, while even

one “room” feels too big, so go smaller. It doesn’t matter how long it takes as long as it is progress.’ SOUNDS EXHAUSTING! WHY BOTHER?

‘Having an organised, tidy home will reduce time spent cleaning, help lower anxiety as you’ll know where everything is, increase productivity, improve head space and allow you to enjoy your surroundings more,’ says Vicky. ‘I’ve seen cases where a client’s home is dramatically and negatively affecting their mental health. They’ve had no choice but to do something about it. I’m not even talking hoarding, but “life”, which has escalated over the years.’

around the house wondering how they can use them. Declutter first, then measure up, working out what storage you need to get yourself organised,’ says Vicky. ONCE YOUR HOME IS ORGANISED, HOW DO YOU KEEP IT THAT WAY? ‘I try to limit what comes into my home,’ says Vicky, ‘and I’m a very conscious shopper. Try to separate what you want and need. I also like everything to have a home as I hate not being able to find things.’ HOW DO YOU PERSUADE YOUR CLIENTS TO GET RID OF STUFF? ‘I never actually persuade them to as such. If I’m asked, then I give my honest opinion, but it should be an organic process,’ says Vicky. ‘I believe in gut feelings. On day one, we work on a rough edit of their space, with culling following naturally.’

122

WHAT ABOUT WHEN ONE PARTNER IS A MINIMALIST AND THE OTHER A BORDERLINE HOARDER? ‘Communication is a must,’ says Vicky. ‘Guidelines have to be set with effort from both sides. I’ve seen couples break up because their habits have been so different that they believe they are simply incompatible. Some clients have described us as “saving a relationship”.’ HOW CAN I SET UP MY HOME SO MESS DOESN’T HAPPEN? ‘Focus on simple systems,’ says Vicky. ‘Use the spaces that are “prime locations” (most easily accessible) for day-to-day things, with those you use less in harder-to-reach places.’ Simon agrees: ‘We are only human, and our homes are where life happens every day, so they are

It’s about providing the kits: a bin, a laundry basket, wardrobe organisation, such as slimline hangers, and boxes for small

items. When the kids were little, I used soft baskets with handles to tidy up toys quickly.’ Simon says that storage needs to be fun: ‘Make tidying into a game. For teens, think ahead and let them choose storage that works for them.’ Vicky says: ‘Be pleased when they achieve less than your initial hopes. Teach them good methods and remember that the more possessions they have, the more lengthy – and challenging – the task will be.’ WHAT ARE YOUR BEST SELLERS? ‘We’ve seen a real increase in kitchen storage,’ says Simon, ‘as our shopping habits have changed

People have recognised the importance of getting the kitchen organised with fridge boxes and canisters.’ For Matt, The Home Edit collaboration with John Lewis & Partners has been really popular, while the store’s Croft Collection shoe rack is always a big seller. CAN FUNCTIONAL STORAGE BE STYLISH? ‘Yes, of course,’ says Simon. ‘People often think of plastic boxes or unattractive cabinets, but there are lots of beautiful options. I’m a firm believer that storage you enjoy aesthetically makes you far more inclined to use it.’ Matt says to look at materials: ‘Go natural in a modern country-style home or choose colourful lacquered pieces in a contemporary space. Check out Kvell for ottomans and cubes in stylish colours and materials.’

ANY GENIUS STORAGE PRODUCTS WE HAVEN’T SEEN BEFORE? ‘The Like-It shoe holder,’ says Matt. ‘It is incredible, basically doubling your shoe storage. People have said they are life changing!’ Simon picks his wall-hung toy storage globes, which work all around the home. ‘Just because something is marketed as storage for toys or for the kitchen doesn’t mean you can’t use it in the study or living area – get creative!’ WHAT’S THE ONE THING YOU CAN DO TO MAKE YOUR HOME TIDIER NOW? ‘Get a bag, start in one room and look at it with fresh eyes. Fill the bag with all of the things you just know you never use or don’t want,’ challenges Vicky. ‘You can even hang a bag on the door handle for each room. Just keep going – you might even find it fun!’

Raspberry tarts with ginger crust and pistachio brittle MAKES 6 READY IN 50 mins, plus chilling FOR THE GINGER PASTRY ● 250g plain flour ● 125g unsalted butter ● 1tbsp soft brown sugar ● 1tsp fresh ginger, peeled and grated ● ½tsp dried ginger FOR THE BRITTLE ● 75g caster sugar ● 4g salted butter ● 50g pistachio kernels, chopped ● 400g raspberries ● 250ml natural yogurt ● 300ml custard YOU WILL NEED ● 6 x 10cm fluted tartlet cases ● Mini star cutters ● Baking beans

1 For the ginger pastry, blitz all the ingredients together in a food processor with ½tsp sea salt. Once it forms a breadcrumb texture add 2tbsp water and blitz until the dough comes together. Wrap in cling film and chill for 20 mins.

2 On a lightly floured work surface,

roll out the pastry to 3mm thick, cut out circles and line the cases. Using the remaining dough, cut out mini stars and arrange them on a lined baking tray. Chill for 20 mins.

3 Preheat the oven to 190C/Gas 5.

Line the tartlets with parchment and fill with baking beans. Place on a separate tray to the stars and bake. After 15 mins remove the stars, bake the tartlets for 5 mins more.

4 Remove the beans and paper,

then return to the oven for 5 mins until lightly golden. Leave to cool.

5 For the pistachio brittle, line a

baking tray with parchment. Heat

the sugar in a small pan. When it turns caramel in colour remove from the heat and stir in the butter and 40g of the chopped pistachios.

6 Pour onto the baking parchment,

place another piece of parchment on top and use a rolling pin to spread out, being extremely careful not to touch the hot caramel. Leave to cool before breaking into shards.

7 For the filling, blitz 30g raspberries in a food processor. Mix together the yogurt, custard and raspberry purée.

8 Arrange tartlets on a plate. Divide

the raspberry filling between them, top with raspberries, pistachio brittle, mini stars and extra pistachios.

ward-winning photographer Jake Mosher works from his home in rural Montana overlooking the Rocky Mountains. He creates unique, kaleidoscope-like artwork inspired by the intricate patterns on butterfly and moth wings, observed through his camera lens at high magnification. His artwork is available to view and to buy at Runway Gallery.

IT WAS THE COLOUR OF BUTTERFLIES THAT DREW ME TO THEM. I wanted to capture their beauty in a way that had never been done before. I start by taking hundreds of highly magnified images of small sections of the wings, moving the camera a miniscule amount each time. Once my editing programme has stacked all of the images into a single image, I begin working with the

I’VE ALWAYS BEEN FASCINATED BY NATURE. I grew up in Northern Vermont, a stone’s throw from vast, unbroken woods in an era without video games, DVDs or text messages. Instead, I’d throw on a backpack and go out exploring, camera in hand. After leaving my career as an explosives engineer, I moved to Montana and found myself sitting by a lake in the Rocky Mountains and was struck by its beauty – a beauty that deserved to be captured. In that moment I decided to focus on photography.

SIMPLE PLEASURES CLOCKWISE, FROM THIS IMAGE Spend a day sunbathing and swimming; discover a world of military history; meander around Tresco Abbey Gardens

These sun-drenched islands off the coast of Cornwall are at the top of our bucket list of future staycation destinations

B

ritain might best be known for blustery weather and grey skies, but hunt a little harder and there are pockets of coastal perfection to be found. The Isles of Scilly, consisting of an archipelago of around 140 sunkissed islands, boast a sub-tropical climate, giving them hot summers and milder winters. This makes them the warmest place in the country, and a perfect spot for late summer escapes. The five principal inhabited islands consist of St Mary’s, Tresco, St Martin’s, St Agnes and Bryher. Island hopping is popular, and every

morning boats line up along the docks to whip you away to explore another idyll. Don’t leave without visiting the beautiful gardens at Tresco Abbey, or taking a wine tour and tasting at St Martin’s Vineyard. Where to stay? We’d head over to Bryher and book into Hell Bay Hotel, which we promise is a little slice of heaven.

THEN… AND NOW

1993

Every issue in our centenary year, we’re dipping into our archive to find an inspiring image and put a modern spin on the look

FEATURE MICHELA COLLING

THE ORIGINAL The 1980s may have been about excess – bold colour, patterns galore and remember those big curtain swags? But in the 1990s there was a move towards minimalism. Here, subtle stripes on the wall are repeated on the sofa, which are teamed with light furniture and a two-tone colour scheme to keep the look fresh, yet understated. THE UPDATE We’ve decided to up the ante a little, with a move away from the calm and collected colour scheme. We’ve picked pattern clashes, elevated finishes – such as velvet for the cushion and glam, tinted glass – and a strong palette of black and green to create a bigger impact.
