Feature Lara Berry
Use a pale grey or white to ground your pastel scheme, introducing light wooden tones to stop it from getting sickly sweet. Give curtains a quick and easy update with a pompom or tassel trim in a shade darker than the fabric for extra detail. Pastels look great with gold accents – look for tables, lighting, mirrors and picture frames that use the colour to give your space a luxe finish.

Living room
Welcome to my home A bit about me I’m Cassie Schifano and I’m married to Ben, a mechanic. We have six children: Kiki, Isadora, Arrietty, Mitzi, Fionnuala and Huxley. I document our interiors on Instagram at @wheretheeightdwell.
Where I live
‘People always tell me that I’m brave with my interior choices, but my mantra is ‘if you don’t like it or get bored, you can always change it.’ Lots of our furniture is reclaimed, but we wanted to splash out a bit on the living room as it’s our grown-up space, though the blue sofa was a bargain from Dunelm. We had the units painted and built in and got someone in to do the wallpapering. It would probably have taken Ben four weekends, whereas a professional came in and finished it in a day and a half. I believe it’s important to decide not only where to save or spend money, but also where to make the best use of your time. Saying that, Ben did lay the parquet floor after watching a YouTube video.’
Home is a 1950s fivebedroom detached house in Woking. We moved here in December 2015.
Feature and styling Lisa Moses Photos Katie Jane Watson Fe
What I wanted to change Everything! It originally had four bedrooms and one bathroom. It needed a complete renovation.
How I made it my own We added new electrics and plumbing, and then an extension, an extra bedroom, a new kitchen and two bathrooms. Then we decorated it all.
My favourite part I love the lounge because it’s tidy all the time! The children are allowed in but only with us. It’s a bit of a sanctuary for Ben and me.
‘My home reflects me as a person,’ says Cassie. ‘I’m someone who likes life and excitement. Colour and pattern and not being safe or restrictive in my ideas is mirrored in my design style’

My story… When Ben and I got together we knew we wanted a house full of children, but by the time we had four, we were bursting out of our three-bedroom house. When we first looked at this place, I giggled all the way round because it was such a mess. It was single-glazed, had an asbestos flue, old wiring and the plumbing didn’t work. But it had a great layout with potential for extending, so even before we’d exchanged, I’d already drawn out plans of how we could best use the space in my head. We weren’t daunted because we’re people who get things done. The first winter here was really cold so we fairly swiftly fitted new windows at the front of the house. Then the following summer we moved into a rental property and the real work began. We extended the back to create a massive kitchen-diner and built two extra bedrooms above it. We turned one of the existing bedrooms into a family bathroom and had new electrics and plumbing fitted. Then we had the whole house plastered and were left with a shell to finish. Ben has been incredible doing most of the work himself, laying floors, fitting the kitchen and decorating the house, though YouTube has been a wonderful friend and we’ve both picked up skills along the way. There have been stressful moments and you can get decision fatigue when there’s a whole house to do, but I love the design process and making things beautiful. If asked, I would do it all again. 16 yourhomestyle.uk
Kitchen ‘I love cooking and entertaining, so I spent a lot of time designing this room. We looked at all the standard kitchen suppliers but didn’t find anything we liked. Then a flyer came through the door from Just Fitted Kitchens saying, ‘bespoke kitchens at bargain prices.’ I went to them with my colours and the plans I’d drawn out and they made up the cabinets, which Ben fitted. We then started looking at worktops but couldn’t afford granite and didn’t want wood because of the upkeep and we thought they would clash with the cupboards, so we started investigating concrete worktops. After watching lots of YouTube videos, Ben made the worktops himself, though he joked about the island being the size of Sicily, where his dad’s from.’
Inspiring homes ‘I was inspired to mix colour and wood from an image I found on Pinterest and I love the retro feel and the warmth of the walnut against the orange. We were lucky that we didn’t have any major disasters during the refit, though it did take a year to finish the concrete worktops. It was a special moment when they went in, as we’d just been using a big piece of ply on the island for 12 months’
‘I love that my home is constantly evolving. We originally bought our dining table when we got married and it was shabby chic in style. We recently sanded it down, stained the top and painted the legs – now it looks completely different, it’s like having a new table. The pink and yellow chairs are from Wayfair and I love the way they stand out against the blue wall’
‘Initially I thought I’d made a mistake with this Flora wallpaper from John Lewis as the colours didn’t work as I’d hoped. But adding the right print and placing furniture near it in complementary colours has made a massive difference and now it looks great. We got the cabinet from Facebook Marketplace. I painted it yellow and lined it with Harlequin wallpaper from our old house. The rug is from Wayfair and the sofa is a second-hand eBay buy’
‘The Skogsta bar stools, from IKEA, were a bargain and at only £20 each, we could afford to buy the six that we needed. The green KitchenAid was a wedding present and the pendant lights are from Graham & Green’

Expert advice How to decorate with colour and pattern Using bold, bright shades and striking designs is a quick and easy way to update any space

O One of the easiest ways to update a room is to paint a wall in one bold colour. The big DIY and homes stores sell their own paints now and often have colours that will match the more expensive brands. Use tester pots first to check a colour suits the room and don’t forget: it doesn’t have to be forever. O Save colourful, patterned wallpaper for a feature wall. Too
much and it could be difficult to live with, but on the right wall, it can have a transformative effect and with the self-adhesive styles available now, it’s much easier to hang it yourself. O Think carefully about what tones go together. Clashing colours can be great, but if you want big blocks of colour, pair them with more neutral shades to give your eyes a break. Or add a touch of pattern, like Cassie’s kitchen splashback. O If you don’t want to commit to a permanent scheme, add colour in smaller ways. Use cushions, throws, artwork and rugs to add a bold shot of colour through the veins of your home.
Inspiring homes
Master bedroom ‘The bed has followed us around for years, but the bedside cabinets, from Swoon Editions, were a new, quite expensive, buy. While the rest of the house is for the children, this room is a bit of a refuge from the chaos for Ben and me, so we were happy to investment in some beautiful furniture for the space. I still walk in and think, ‘this is lovely.’ The green wall is, uninspiringly, called 6004. It’s an RAL colour mixed at a Dulux station, but it looks beautiful against the pink curtains and accessories. The ceiling chandelier is really special to me. I fell in love with it when I was in Wales and when I told Ben he suggested we go and buy it immediately. So we called the shop, asked them to stay open for us and drove to get it there and then.’
‘I really wanted to fill these pretty pink frames with independent prints, but square prints are hard to come by, so it took a while. I was delighted with the two I found from Holly Maguire and Emily’s Embroidery Art. The bedside cabinet is an investment piece from Swoon Editions and the lamp is from Habitat’ August 2020 19
‘I’ve never been one to go for the classic nursery look and this Bohemian Flower wallpaper, from Wallpaper Direct, is possibly the maddest wallpaper we have in the house! The vintage furniture is from eBay and I sewed the edging ribbon and pompom trim onto the purple blanket to personalise it’

Inspiring homes ‘I’ve been collecting prints for years. Most are ones I’ve made or that have been gifted to me, although I try and buy from independent print sellers too. The yellow book holder is actually an IKEA spice rack that I painted and the cabinet is from Amazon’
Bathroom ‘With eight of us in the house, we were keen for the family bathroom to be ready as soon as possible, so we paid a tile do the walls and Ben laid the floo r to r tiles. The bathroom sink unit is made out of a vintage sideboard we bought on eBay. I’d seen lots of images of sinks resting on units on Pinterest but didn’t kno w if they were genuine or not. I asked our plumbers if they could modify our cabine t and adapt the basins from Victoria n Plumbing to create a double sink and the y did a really good job.’
‘The encaustic tiles, from Best Tile UK, are all seconds and come as a random mix so were only £1 each. It did mean that we didn’t get a choice so there are some colours that I wouldn’t have naturally chosen, but I love the finished effect and we made a real saving, so it was worth it’
What I learned… O The internet is your friend, both for design and practical help. You can be inspired by the millions of images out there or learn to do anything via online videos if you’re ready to give it a go. O Don’t be scared of change. If you put something up, enjoy it while you like it and change it when you don’t. Interior design choices don’t need to be forever and décor can constantly evolve.
‘Kiki and Isadora share a room and we wanted fitted desks for them. The alcove was the perfect space, so I measured it and drew out a design on graph paper that included lots of storage for books and toys. Our joiners built and sprayed it in the workshop, then fitted it. The green chairs are from Cult Furniture’
O I love colour and can’t imagine a home without it. I never thought I was creative because I couldn’t draw, but I now realise being creative is also about ideas and concepts that can make something beautiful.

LAMPSHADE Light up your home, like Cassie has, with this paper-pieced project that’s sure to steal the limelight
Top tip Make sure your paper is thick enough to cover the frame without tearing, but not too opaque – you want the light to shine through.
You will need 4 Patterned paper 4 White card 4 Glue gun 4 Sticky foam pads 4 Wire lampshade frame
1
Cut out different-sized circles from your patterned paper. For a neater result, find some circular items of different sizes, such as jar lids, cups and drinking glasses, place them on the paper and use them as templates to draw around before cutting out the circles. Cut a piece of white card to fit around the lampshade frame. Layer the circles onto the card so that they overlap one another. Layer the paper circles with the larger ones covering the base, then use the smaller circles to fill in gaps on top. If you’re using different coloured papers, make sure you spread them out evenly. Wrap the card around the frame and secure it using a glue gun. Attach a few more circles using sticky foam pads to conceal the join. For a neat, professional finish, make sure all the circles on the bottom layer are aligned.

Welcome to my home A bit about me I’m Charlotte Knowles (@gosforthhome), 28. I live with my husband Jonathan, 31, and our two dachshunds, Austin and Magnus.
Where I live We live in a fivebedroom three-storey Victorian terraced house in Gosforth, Newcastle, which we bought four years ago.
‘The blue sofa was a total impulse buy, but we worked around that for the whole room’
What I wanted to change Some of the rooms felt dark and the floral bedroom wasn’t to my taste. It was the dated bathroom that needed most work though.
Feature Karen Wilson Photos Katie Lee
How I made it my own We’ve lightened up most of the rooms with white paint, resprayed the existing kitchen units, added new flooring and replaced the bathroom. Copper and black accents give the house an industrial feel.
My favourite part Our new boutique hotel-style bathroom.
I’m obsessed By opting for light colours and industrial touches 26 yourhomestyle.uk
Inspiring homes
Living room ‘The living room was pretty dark when we moved in with grey walls and dark woodwork. At first, we painted one wall dark and the others white. Then we scrapped that and did the whole thing white before adding colour through accessories. The first thing we bought was the blue sofa. It was a total impulse buy, but we worked around that for the whole room. It really makes the living space, along with the shutters from Shuttercraft. I didn’t want to have standard matching furniture, so I love that each piece is individual. Now the room feels so much lighter and brighter, but at the same time very cosy and homely with the fire. The only thing we might do in future is paint the beautiful ceiling mouldings an off-black colour to make them stand out more.’
Style idea Sticking to monochrome cushions with a colourful statement sofa is a fail-safe option
Simple white walls ensure the Sofology Cricket sofa in velvet teal is the star of the show. ‘I wanted to add some industrial elements so this copper coffee table, which cost £12 from an auction in Lancashire was perfect,’ says Charlotte
with moodboards Charlotte Knowles has given her first home a fresh new look August 2020 27
Boho cushions from Next work well with the industrial-look copper floor lamp from Wayfair. ‘Most of the artwork was found online and printed off for free,’ says Charlotte
My story… We had zero experience of renovating when we moved out of our rented flat in Jesmond, Newcastle and bought our first house together. As Jonny had inherited some money, we had a good-sized budget for first-time buyers and were able to afford a five-bedroom house in nearby Gosforth. I grew up in an old terraced house, so that’s the style I was drawn to. We viewed some lovely properties, but none quite had the character of this one. I particularly loved the high ceilings, bay windows and lovely openplan kitchen-diner space. The location is great too, as we have shops on the doorstep yet it’s within easy reach of the seaside and Northumberland. The house was generally in decent condition apart from the outdated bathroom, so we tried to maintain the original features where possible while giving it a modern, industrial twist. Apart from remodelling the bathroom, which took months and was an absolute nightmare, the work was mostly aesthetic. This included knocking down the dodgy wall at the front and building a fence, having the porch and windows restored and painted, adding wooden shutters in the bay window and respraying the existing kitchen units. I’d say my style is a mixture of old and new. I love old industrial pieces, mixed metals and dark wood paired with bright whites and modern touches. I love bringing a look together with plants and a few pops of colour here and there. I love a good bargain too and can often be found hunting in charity shops, strolling around Tynemouth Market or finding something a bit different in HomeSense and TK Maxx. It helped that I subscribed to loads of interiors magazines when we moved in and I followed lots of Instagram accounts for decorating inspiration. I’m pretty obsessed with moodboards too, as I do them a lot with my job as a textiles teacher. I always start with a colour or a main piece of furniture and work around that. Eventually we’d love to move to a house with a bigger garden and take on a new challenge, but we’d be gutted to leave our first home. 28 yourhomestyle.uk
Kitchen ‘Although the kitchen was relatively new, I didn’t particularly like the colour. There was a lot of grey in the room and we wanted to break it up, so we sprayed the outer units white to make it even lighter and painted the handles black to match our other furniture and stools. At one point I considered changing the dining area into a more informal sofa zone, but that would’ve meant putting the dining table into the snug next door and we quite like having a separate snug.’
Inspiring homes As the kitchen-diner had already been extended into the side return by the previous owners, Charlotte and Jonathan benefited from a lovely, light spacious room. Perfect for entertaining, it features a rustic dining table and bench from Furniture Village teamed with black IKEA chairs for definition
‘We replaced the dark brown laminate flooring in here for a light grey design from B&Q, which works much better’ says Charlotte

O Lighting is a key factor. Wall lights on either side of a mirror are best for putting on make-up, but why not ramp up the glamour and opt for a chandelier pendant too? As long as it’s IP44 rated for safety, there’s no reason why you can’t add a bit of opulence normally reserved for the living room.
O Have a stand-out feature, whether it’s a stunning freestanding bath, twin basins, unusual tiles, a designer towel rail or a statement chair. Alternatively, you can elevate a standard suite with black, copper or antique bronze taps.
n has New grey laminate flooring to match the kitche created continuity in the house. Charlotte’s added from some handy shoe storage from IKEA and a rug ce entran ming ASOS to create a welco

O Consider creating built-in storage that will keep the space looking sleek and serene, reserving only the prettiest, colour-coordinating toiletries for display. Install a charging point
O Visuals are important, but don’t forget your other senses too. Scented candles and diffusers are a must, underfloor heating will keep your toes toasty and a new set of touchy-feely 100 per cent cotton towels is a must.

Master bedroom ‘This room just wasn’t me before, with its ultra-feminine blue floral wallpaper. I wanted to bring in some mixed metals like in the living room, so we bought a few random photo frames to create a gallery wall. We also repainted in pale grey with a mauve feature wall, replaced the curtains and bought new furniture. Since moving in we’ve actually changed our bed a couple of times and ended up getting a low one so the sausage dogs can climb up! The only thing left to do is add fitted wardrobes to the alcoves. In future we may even knock the bedroom and dressing room together to make a bigger space with a dressing area and en suite.’

‘My favourite part of the bedroom is the showstopping headboard, which I made from old books we already had’
‘My favourite part of this room is the showstopping headboard. I made it from old books we already had and nailed them to the wall,’ says Charlotte. She bought the bedside table from IKEA and the lamps from Next. ‘To finish it off, I added in some pieces of faux trailing ivy from IKEA’ August 2020 31
Guest room ‘This was another very floral and feminine room that needed a refresh with some white paint. The previous layout – with the bed the other way around – made it look small, but now it even has a kingsize bed in there. We went for a neutral backdrop with lots of copper teamed with industrial-style furniture. I also tried my hand at painting the wall and gave it an ombré effect with black and white paint. It actually looks like wallpaper, but I always make a point of telling people I painted it!’
Charlotte has threaded copper elements throughout her scheme, like this bed frame from Next. The artwork is by Surfacephilia and the geometric cushions from Primark. The low unit is from IKEA

Bathroom ‘This has been the biggest transformation in the house. It was so bare and boring in here before with a wooden floor, cream walls and dated bathroom fittings, including a random washing machine! We ripped the whole thing out and started from scratch, opting for an industrial but luxurious look. The step up to a built-in bath, copper taps and hexagon tiles make it feel like a fancy hotel. It wasn’t all plain sailing though, as the work was supposed to take a month, but ended up taking six as the tiling was so tricky. I love the new space and I may even consider painting the walls black or covering an entire wall with fake plants.’
‘I particularly love my large Hollywood dressing mirror with lights around the outside,’ says Charlotte. ‘It’s great for putting on make-up’
Although the hexagon tiles were trick y to fit, Charlotte loves the luxurious look they bring to her new bathroom. British Ceramic Tile has similar hexagon wall tiles and Tiles Direct has similar mosaic floor tiles
What I learned… O Unusual-shaped tiles, like our hexagon designs in the bathroom, will take longer to lay so you’ll spend more on labour. Also, make sure your tiler has the same vision as you. Although I’d drawn out a rough sketch of how I wanted the tiles to go part way up the wall, when they were laid every corner looked bizarre as the cuts created a little triangle. O Don’t make rash decisions. Just because you like something doesn’t mean it’s going to go with your style or match your room. Think carefully and walk away if it’s not going to work. O If I did it again, I would take my time and maybe be a bit more daring. I feel we played it safe and were scared to add too much colour on the walls.

Make the look... DYED BEDDING Make your duvet as dreamy as Charlotte’s with this shibori natural dyeing technique You will ll need
Top tip If you don’t want to wring out the fabric by hand, put it in the washing machine for a spin cycle.
4 Double duvet cover made from natural fibres 4 Four litres of soya milk 4 Water 4 Yellow onion skins 4 Strong cotton string 4 Rope 4 Large stock pot 4 Two buckets 4 Sieve 4 Clothes pegs 4 Plastic sheet
1
Wash the duvet cover, then let it soak in a bucket filled with the soya milk and 20 litres of cool water for 12 hours. Remove the cover, squeeze out the liquid and hang it up to dry in the shade. Once it’s dry, immerse it in the soya milk mixture again for a few minutes. Again, squeeze out the liquid and hang the fabric out to dry. Repeat this step once more and then store the cover in a cool dry place for at least three days. Starting at one corner, pleat five rows and secure them with a peg. Moving vertically, shift down about 30.5cm and pleat another five rows. Comb the pleats up into the previous ones, secure the new section with a peg, then move down another 30.5cm. Move horizontally to pleat the next section with another five rows and then move vertically down again. Repeat until the entire duvet cover is pleated and pegged. Lay the cover out with the pegs facing down and the inside of the pleats facing up. Lay the rope inside and curl the cover around the rope, securing the sides all the way down with pegs. Secure with twine and begin to bind the piece, removing the pegs. Put the onion skins in a pot and cover them with water. Heat for 1-2 hours, until the water has dyed a deep orange colour and leave it overnight. Once the dye bath is cool, sieve it into a bucket. Discard the skins and transfer the liquid back into the pot. Soak the duvet cover in cool water overnight. Once soaked, immerse the cover in the dye bath and heat for 1-2 hours, stirring it occasionally. Turn off the heat and leave everything to soak overnight. Remove the duvet cover and rinse it in cool water until the liquid runs clear. Lay the bundled cover on a plastic sheet, cut off the twine and unwrap. Gently wash it and hang it up to dry in the shade.

Where I live
Feature and styling Rosalind Erskine Photos Fiona Walker-Arnott
I live in a two-bedroom traditional Victorian tenement flat in the south side of Glasgow.
What I wanted to change
Living room Kate has used a mix of grey, pink and cream in the living room, along with a variety of plants, in order to create a homely look in here. ‘Our living room is such a bright space, with so much personality,’ she says. The white walls and stripped-back sanded floorboards provide a plain canvas to show off carefully chosen pieces of furniture. The white palette accentuates the features of the room and makes the pink and grey seating stand out. Splashes of metallics in the accessories and the stand-out sideboard add warmth to this bright room, which is anything but stark, despite the cool colours.
I wanted to make the most of the light-filled rooms by redecorating. The flat also desperately needed a new kitchen.
How I made it my own We have decorated all of the rooms to suit our taste, sanded the floors and added some mid-century pieces of furniture, plus a few favourite artworks.
My favourite part The kitchen. I also love all of our accessories that we have dotted around the flat.

‘We love displaying our favourite possessions on open shelving’
My story… Despite only being 23 when we bought our home, we knew exactly what we were looking for. We wanted to move out of the city to the south side of Glasgow, which we’d heard promising things about. I love period properties and so we were hoping to find a Victorian tenement with original features – ornate cornicing, wooden floors, high ceilings and big windows. Since I knew we would be slowly updating the place, I looked more at the layout of the rooms and what we could do to the space, and we were lucky to find a place that didn’t need too much done to it. Growing up partly in New Zealand, I was keen to make the most of the bright outlook that the third floor offers. I love how much light we get, so I chose white as a base colour and used it throughout each room. This makes the high ceilings, ornate cornicing and ceiling roses really stand out. I’ve definitely held off on being too crazy until recently – I really didn’t want to make any big changes until I was a bit more comfortable with my style. There are so many things I’d do differently now. For example, we sanded down the old, overvarnished floorboards to reveal the lighter pine underneath but we didn’t finish them properly so they’re looking a little worn. Admittedly, it does work with the style, but I’d love to get them fixed. The biggest job that we undertook was to put in a new kitchen and reconfigure the space for added storage. I’m still planning on making a few more changes and I want to experiment with colour on the walls. I think that will be next on my list: a more colourful bathroom and hallway. 42 yourhomestyle.uk
Regularly changing accessories in the living room allows for a quick and easy refresh. ‘While I’m tempted to buy new pieces to give the space a new lease of life,’ says Kate, ‘I know that having a switch up does the job just as well’

Expert advice How to sand a floor Get your floorboards looking good as new with these step-by-step pointers O Prepare the floor by sweeping it thoroughly. Once that’s done, check the condition of the floorboards. If any are damaged, you’ll need to replace them with reclaimed boards of a similar type of wood and colour. Make sure all boards are secure and that all gaps between the boards are filled in. A copper tap over the Belfast sink ties in perfectly with all of the other metallic elements in the kitchen
44 yourhomestyle.uk
O You’ll need to hire a professional sanding kit, including a drum, edging and corner sander. Seal doors to the room with plastic sheeting so
that the dust stays in that room and doesn’t travel. O Wearing protective gear, sand the floor diagonally with the drum sander. When you get to the end of the room, lift the drum and turn to sand the boards in the opposite direction. It’s important not to let the sander rest on any one part of the floor for too long. Once you’ve done this, work along the grain of the boards. O After you’ve finished using the drum sander, work on the edges of the room with the edging sander. Use the corner sander to sand any spots that the edging sander couldn’t reach. Sweep the floor and repeat the process if you’re not happy with the end result.

MAKE Make a midcentury chair on page 50
Kitchen Kate has gone for a white and mint green colour scheme in the kitchen, with lots of gold accents and patterned accessories. ‘My advice for the kitchen is to keep it pretty but practical,’ says Kate. ‘I don’t mind a bit of organised clutter. We have a lot of open shelving, which is great for putting favourite jars, vases and pots on display. We hide the rest away in the cupboards…’ Kate’s larder is as picture-perfect as the main room, with labelled storage jars creating an Instagram-worthy space.
Kate wanted a mix of styles in her bedroom, which continues the muted colour scheme of her flat. The blush pink bed is from Made.com and the mid-century bedside tables are from West Elm
46 yourhomestyle.uk
Bedroom A mix of modern and vintage styles creates an eclectic look in the bedroom. The couple wanted to keep the space light, airy and uncluttered, splurging on key pieces, such as the dressing table and bed. ‘A bedroom should be a palace!’ says Kate. ‘I spent big on bedding and found bedside tables that offer storage, but are also pleasing on the eye. Clever storage makes it easy to keep the room tidy.’ Simple hooks on the wall makes for a handy space to hang up hats, bags and other accessories as well as providing some pretty décor. Keeping to the low-key theme, Kate opted for neutral colours with lots of soft furnishings and a mix of textures for added interest. The reclaimed wooden flooring, laid in a parquet style, adds a sophisticated finish to the bright space.
Inspiring homes Kate has made a feature of the fireplace with some dried foliage. The green desk – used as a dressing table – from West Elm adds a splash of colour
Study Kate’s mid-century-style desk and chair are complemented by a blush pink sofa and gold open shelving on the other side of the room. The addition of a few pieces of wall art was the finishing touch to the considered space. ‘Our white walls were looking a bit bare, so I knew it was time to hunt down some nice prints,’ says Kate. ‘I didn’t want just anything hanging on our walls; I wanted cheerful art that I’d never get bored of.’ A wire noticeboard means Kate can easily swap and change bits and pieces that inspire her.
Kate’s home office is a calm, midcentury-inspired space with vintage accents in the West Elm desk and Made.com sofa bed. The parquet-style flooring adds warmth to the room
Plenty of plants and fresh white tiles create a serene look in the bathroom. Wanting to steer away from built-in furniture, Kate has used baskets for storage, as well as a vintage-look dresser and chest of drawers
What I learned… O Creating your ideal home is a long process! Even now, I still have a few odd jobs on my DIY to-do list. O Living in your home for a while before you start any renovations is important. It really helps you get a feel for the space in each room and how you want to utilise them. I’ve definitely held off on going too crazy until recently – I really didn’t want to make any big changes until I was a bit more comfortable with my style. O Don’t be afraid to experiment with colour on the walls, especially in the form of wallpaper. I played it safe with colour, but I think I’m going to try out some more shades in the bathroom and hallway.

Kitchen-Diner
Welcome to my home A bit about me I’m Aisling Bent and I live here with my partner, Dennis Collins, my son, Ailin, three, and daughter, Keena, one.
Where I live My home is a threebedroom terrace in Kinsale, County Cork, built 15 years ago. I’ve lived here for six years.
‘Before, the kitchen was very dark. It had only one small window and very little counter space. There wasn’t enough room for a decent-sized dining table, so we mostly ate our meals in the living room, which I hated. Now, it’s unrecognisable. It’s still north-facing so naturally fairly dark, but after knocking through to the old laundry room, extending and adding sliding doors and three large windows, it feels like a completely different house. We moved the kitchen to the opposite side of the room, added a large island and plenty of floor-to-ceiling cabinets for storage. I chose sleek, handleless cabinet doors so that the exposed brick could remain the focal point of the kitchen and had them sprayed in Farrow & Ball’s Off-Black. It’s a huge pleasure to prepare and eat meals in our kitchen now.’
‘Your home should be your favourite place; the one you want to retreat to at the end of the day’
What I wanted to change Everything… It was in a sorry state. The plastering was bad and we wanted to extend too.
Feature Abbi Henderson Photos Georgia Burns F
How I made it my own We reconfigured the ground floor by adding a small extension and relocating the laundry room. Upstairs we built a walk-in wardrobe. I’ve also filled every room with our DIY and upcycling projects so it’s truly personal to us.
My favourite part The location. We live in one of the most stunning seaside towns in Ireland and have a gorgeous view of the marina.

‘The kitchen island is the hub of the house,’ says Aisling. ‘It tends to be where we all gather during the day. You’ll generally find me here preparing meals and snacks on request for my two little monkeys. It’s also where I go for a quiet moment to relax and drink a cuppa’

Extending the rear of the house, and connecting the kitchen to the living room has given the home a more harmonious flow, more light and much more space for the kids to play. And with the black and white boards, the walls look different every day
Aisling opted for a sleek, streamlined kitchen to contrast the texture of the exposed brick wall. She chose white quartz worktops, which brings brightness and a modern edge, and oak-effect wood tiles for the floor. ‘Our kitchen shelf is an old scaffold board that actually held up part of the house while we were extending,’ says Aisling

‘The living room used to have double doors leading onto the garden patio, but when we renovated to create the open-plan kitchen and living space, we extended out by 12 feet (3.5 metres) from the old double doors to link the kitchendiner and living room. Now, there’s an archway connecting the living room to the new space, which the children use as a little play area. We put all the coving in ourselves using polystyrene, which was surprisingly easy once we got the hang of it, and Dennis made some of the furniture himself. He built the coffee table using old scaffold boards and the radiator cover using a pallet, all of which were free.’
Inspiring homes ‘The music corner is our happy place. It’s where Dennis and I hang out once the kids have gone to bed,’ says Aisling. ‘We turned an IKEA Kallax unit on its side and added castors to house our vinyl collection, and framed some of our favourite records for the wall display’
My story… It’s my belief that we didn’t find this house, but rather, it found us. We began renting this property in 2013 and loved our quality of life here. The location, Kinsale, is fantastic. It’s one of the most beautiful seaside towns in Ireland and just a stone’s throw from amenities. Plus, the property, which is in a cul-de-sac, is very private and has a spectacular view of the town and marina below. So when the house went up for sale in 2015 – while we were still living in it – it was a no-brainer that we’d buy the place that we’d already had so many happy times in. Being so familiar with the property, we put our offer in knowing that it needed a fair amount of work. The kitchen was smaller than we wanted and the finish on the house was absolutely shocking. But we also knew there was a lot of potential to create our ideal family home. Once our offer was accepted, we began renovating the place room by room. We knocked the kitchen through into the laundry room, which was quite spacious, and had a small extension built to create a comfortable open-plan area and link the kitchen-diner and living room. Most of the walls needed replastering and a lot of the tiling needed replacing too. We literally took this house back to its bare bones and rebuilt it in our own way. We also built a cabin in the garden that does double duty as a laundry room and office for our printing business, The Print Den. From day one we have made it our mission to utilise every inch of space and make this house work for all of us in every way possible. Every room, every corner and every nook has been designed in a way that makes our home not only well-functioning and convenient, but also an enjoyable place to be. That said, we’re by no means finished yet…

‘The chest of drawers was a bargain buy from IKEA, which I painted in a deep pink chocolate colour that I love. Then I added new gold handles to make it a bit more me,’ says Aisling

Expert advice How to brighten north-facing rooms Bring light to any gloomy space with these simple design hacks
‘I bought both the sink and chest of drawers second-hand online for less than 60,’ says Aisling. ‘I painted over the floor tiles for a low-cost new look and we framed old National Geographic covers for wall art’
56 yourhomestyle.uk
O Embrace light hues. Pale paint colours and fair furnishings may not increase the light in your northfacing room, but they won’t dull it as much as darker décor will. The same applies to flooring. O Embellish with reflective items. The mirror trick is as old as time, but reflected
light will make your space brighter. It’s not just mirrors, though – reflective furniture, wallpaper, accessories and fabrics all help too. O Opt for open or streamlined furniture. Bulky dressers and wardrobes cast dark shadows. O Go easy on the window dressings. Choose light, sheer fabrics over thick and heavy ones. O Layer your lighting; a single ceiling pendant just won’t do. Use lamps, string lights, spot lights and candles so you can tweak brightness levels.
Inspiring homes
Master bedroom ‘When we moved in, the master bedroom was a mass of wardrobes and magnolia. It was very dark, being north-facing, and the excessive furniture didn’t help; it just felt cluttered. We decided to reduce the size of the neighbouring bedroom to create a walk-in wardrobe that we could access from the master and it instantly made the room feel more spacious. We also had to get the wall behind the bed replastered. We loved the look of the dried plaster so much once it was done that we decided to leave it.’
‘All that matters is that we like the décor and it makes us feel happy, which it does’
Style idea Leave newly plastered walls untouched for added texture
‘I rescued the bedside tables from someone who was throwing them out, so they were completely free,’ Aisling recalls. ‘I sanded them down, gave them new handles and painted their feet; now they look great!’ August 2020 57
Style idea Create your own wall decals using a roll of vinyl
The nursery is overflowing with personal touches, from the pallet radiator cover that Dennis made, to the triangle wall decals, each individually cut by Aisling from a roll of vinyl
Inspiring homes
Nursery ‘Previously, this room was bigger and, at the time of moving in and renovating, was a spare room. We built a stud wall behind where the cot is currently situated, slightly reducing its size so that Dennis and I could have a walk-in wardrobe in our bedroom. Now, we use this room as a nursery. I cut all of the triangle wall decals myself from a roll of black vinyl I bought online. I also created all of the typography prints in the gallery wall too.’
‘Using my creativity allows me to create the interiors that I want, just as I’ve done in the nursery, and also to keep costs to a minimum,’ Aisling says. ‘I share a lot of my projects and inspirations on my Instagram account, @houseoffourwinds’
‘Our home is constantly evolving. Nothing ever stays the same for too long!’ With a bit of lateral thinking and upcycling, Dennis turned an old pallet into a stylish radiator cover
What I learned… O Renovating and decorating a house is a marathon, not a sprint. Take your time and everything will work out fine. O Don’t panic buy anything. Wait until you find the perfect pieces or else you’ll end up spending double when you realise you aren’t satisfied with the substitute item. O It goes without saying, but be very vigilant when hiring contractors. Look through their previous work and get references whenever you can. It’ll save you a lot of time, expense, stress and heartache. O It’s amazing what a bit of upcycling can do. Not just for old furniture, but also scaffolding planks and pallets too!

Top tip Hang your planter from a shelf or from a hook attached to the ceiling.
You will need

Unscrew the embroidery hoops and spread them open so the space in between matches the width of the tile. Use the glue gun to secure the top of the hoops together, then glue the corners of the tile to the bottom of the hoops. Cut a 2m length of cord (you may need more depending on the height of the surface you intend on hanging the planter from). Using your glue gun, add some glue to one end of the cord and press it onto one side of the hoop screw. Keeping the cord tight, wrap it around the hoop and screw, covering the metal and then continuing about 2cm along. Secure with a dab of glue. Measure how high you want the planter to hang, then tie a piece of cord in the centre, with a loop knot at one end. Trim the cord ends. You can make planters for bigger pots by using larger embroidery hoops and tiles.

Over the rainbow We live in a quirky cottage in the east of Fife in Scotland there aren’t two rooms in it that are the same shape or size! I have eclectic taste and love to play with colour. My youngest children share a room and when the time came to decorate it they asked for something bright and colourful, so I used a colour-blocking technique, focusing on mustard, green and pink shades. I also repurposed some spice racks to work as bookshelves. @eclecticsquares

No cutting corners My home is a new build so I essentially had a blank canvas to work with. I get ideas and inspiration for rooms by first deciding on what ‘vibe’ I want the room to be; fresh, cosy or creative to name a few of my favourites. I call this room The Creation Station and I went for a creative but relaxed vibe. The diagonal pink paint in the corner brings out a creative element while the navy paint, velvet pink chair, wood and copper elements create a cosy atmosphere. @chloghome

A-door-able
Retro haven Our home style is Scandinavian with a retro vibe. We have a bright modern space with wooden beams and exposed brick features. The dining area is quite small, so we made the shelves to save space and display some of our favourite records, travel books and vintage items that we’ve collected along the way. We also love art; this Anthony Burrill print is a recent additions and gives the space a welcome pop of colour. @wherehayleylives
This room has been completely transformed – it used to be entirely white. As it’s a room I spend a lot of time in, I wanted it to feel warm and luxurious – while also having a kick of quirkiness and some retro vibes thrown in. And it had to be all on a budget of course! I started with a navy-blue theme and went from there. The door colour was definitely a last-minute decision, but I think it ties it all together. The accessories and furniture are all upcycled, second-hand buys. I’m thrilled with how it turned out! @diyingtoupcycle

Pots of style Give old and mismatched plant pots a hot summer makeover
Top Tip If the thought of freehand painting gives you the heebie-jeebies, make a stencil by printing out a terrazzo image and cutting out the coloured pieces with a craft knife.
Style idea Bring your designs to new heights by pairing your finished pots with plant stands 72 yourhomestyle.uk
Upcycling challenge Give your plants an Insta-worthy home by transforming the look of their plain, old pots. The random pattern of terrazzo means it’s incredibly easy to paint an effective design – it’s probably the only painting project you’ll find where misshapen blobs are ideal!
Takes 4 hours You will need 4 Plant pot 4 Large, stiff-bristled brush or toothbrush 4 Paintbrushes 4 Rust-Oleum Surface Spray Primer 4 Rust-Oleum Chalky Finish Furniture spray paint 4 Rust-Oleum Painter’s Touch brush paint 4 Rust-Oleum Crystal Clear Protective Coat
1
Before you start, clean and dry your pots thoroughly. Then find a wellventilated space to work in and protect nearby surfaces with a dust sheet or some old newspapers. Observing the drying times for this project requires patience, but the finish you’ll achieve will be worth it.

Prime the pot for painting by spraying a thin layer of Rust-Oleum Surface Primer all over the exterior of the pot. When the primer is dry, apply two thin layers of Chalky Finish Furniture Paint, allowing it to dry between each coat. Dip a dry, stiff-bristled paint brush, or an old toothbrush, into a small pot of Rust-Oleum Painter’s Touch paint. Use your finger to draw back the bristles and flick small specks of the paint all over the plant pot, then leave it to dry. Using a smaller paintbrush and several colours of Painter’s Touch paints, create blobs of different shapes and sizes all around the plant pot to mimic a terrazzo design. Use the picture opposite for colour inspiration or chose a scheme of your own. Don’t worry about making all the shapes match, as the more random they are, the more authentic your design will look. Protect your work from inevitable knocks and bumps by finishing it off with two light coats of Rust-Oleum Crystal Clear Protective Coat Spray. Then pop your chosen plant into its stylish pot.

Master tapes T-Rex is known for making ferociously strong tapes, and its new super glue tape is no exception. The tape is clear and super sticky on both sides, which makes it a great alternative to messy super glue. It doesn’t stain surfaces and won’t stick your fingers together! Look out for T-Rex super glue tape for your next project, it’s priced around £4.99 at most good DIY shops.
TOUCH WOOD Protect your outdoor projects with Protek’s new Timber Eco Shield. This waterproofing wood stain will help to prolong the life of wooden items. The translucent stain comes in a range of tones, but whichever colour you choose, the beauty of the wood grain will show through. Take a look at protekwoodstain. co.uk and pick up a can for £24.99 per 2.5l.
Love handles Changing the handles on furniture is one of the simplest ways you can update its look. But don’t let this simplicity fool you, because it can make a huge impact. If, like us, you’ve fallen in love with these Mimi handles (£12) from Anthropologie, you can pick up coordinating knobs and hooks to complete your look from £6.
CUT AND PASTE We often need just a little piece of wallpaper for our upcycling projects, but it’s a nuisance to mix a small amount of wallpaper paste. NuWallpaper is self-adhesive, so does away with the mess of making and spreading paste. The adhesive is designed to allow for easy repositioning and can be removed without leaving a residue. Cut out panels to update your bookcase or use it to perk up wardrobe doors. This flying heron design with its soothing colour scheme would look great in a child’s room. Find your perfect roll of NuWallpaper at Dunelm for £24 per roll.

CONSIDER AIR CONDITIONING We get used to air conditioning when we’re abroad, but the UK has lagged behind other countries in terms of the widespread installation of AC thanks to our unpredictable weather. That’s set to change however with rising UK temperatures. BOXT, the next- day boiler installation business, is offering a new service to help you find the right home air-conditioning unit and have it fitted. Simply fill out the questionnaire on the BOXT website and it’ll help you choose a suitable homecooling package and connect you with a local engineer to book the installation. Tip
Now is a good time to swap heavy curtains for something lighter, such as voile panels. Draw them across an open window and you get the light and breeze you need without sacrificing privacy. You can buy some designer fabric and stitch your own (see right) or opt for readymade panels (left). If you find the light they let in during the evenings and mornings is too much for a bedroom, it might be an idea to buy black-out blinds. As well as keeping the room pitch black at night, they’ll also block out sunlight during the day, helping to keep the room cooler.
Consider sleeping downstairs. Heat rises, so sleeping in a room on the ground floor should help you feel cooler.
HIS AND HERS Men tend to have a higher body temperature than women, which is why there are so many disagreements over duvets – and an argument is the last thing you need on a hot summer night. Step in Nanu, with its personalised ‘hot & not’ duvet. It’s a solution created in two seamless halves. You choose the preferred weight for your side of the duvet, your partner chooses theirs and you both get a good night’s sleep. CHOOSE NATURAL MATERIALS Choosing natural materials for duvets, pillows and bedding pays dividends all year round. You may think wool bedding would make you hot at night, but that’s not the case. Having a warm bath 60-90 minutes before bed can help you fall asleep faster. To help matters along you could fill your bath with a generous helping of Epsom Bath Salts, £35, then use the Luxury Hand and Body Balm, £20, both from The White Company’s Spa Restore Collection, to soothe away the tension of the day.
THE EXPERT SAYS ‘Although wool might seem like a warm choice of material for duvets and pillows, the reverse is true. Wool allows air to circulate and facilitates breathability. This doesn’t happen with feathers or synthetics because they retain moisture, so once a pillow or duvet heats up, it stays hot. Wool is a natural, sustainable material that keeps you warm in winter and cool in summer, so you’ll wake up feeling refreshed whatever the weather.’ Michael Burke, founder of Woolow

‘I love the fresh feel of my bathroom with all the plants – there’s something to look at everywhere’
92 yourhomestyle.uk
Bathroom makeover Sarah wanted dark walls to emphasise the clean look of the white tiles and bathroom suite, and to draw attention to the patterned floor. A mix of faux and real plants, along with the botanical window blind softens the space
My bathroom is a botanical haven By getting rid of the shower cubicle and decorating with dark colours and gardeninspired prints, Sarah Haigh has created a dramatic new look for her bathroom
My room… My problem bathroom The bathroom looked permanently dirty – nothing had been changed for years. There were nasty yellow wall tiles and a mouldy shower cubicle squeezed in next to the bath.
Style idea Don’t be afraid to mix and match bathroom suites – Sarah’s basin, bath and toilet are all from different ranges
A bit about me I’m Sarah Haigh and I live in a four-bedroom semi-detached house in West Yorkshire with my husband, Darryl and our children, Elsie, 10, and Woody, five.
TOTAL
How I made it work I wanted a clean but dramatic look with dark walls, white tiles and a free-standing bath. I would have liked the bath beneath the window – Darryl played around with the layout using a computer design program but when he showed me the drawing, it was obvious we didn’t have room. Instead we created space around the bath by sacrificing the separate shower cubicle and fitting a shower over the bath.

I love the mix of patterns and all the greenery. The botanical blind and floral shower curtain are the things that catch my eye when I walk in – they give the bathroom its character. August 2020 93
Style advice Three simple tricks to try in your home
Go green Leafy plants were the last piece of the styling jigsaw after Sarah had hung the botanical blind. ‘I bought a faux fern and it wasn’t really meant for the bathroom,’ she says. ‘On a whim, I put it in here and instantly loved the way the greenery brought the room to life. I bought more faux plants, although the devil’s ivy at the end of the bath is real and I’m trying to grow it up the wall.’
On the dark side Sarah considered painting the walls black, but decided grey had the same style impact with a warmer colour tone. ‘I bought lots of testers and found Annie Sloan’s Graphite wall paint was the best colour and best quality as it’s hard-wearing enough to withstand the bathroom’s heat, damp and steam,’ she says.
Create space to relax Placing a bath bridge across the tub is a simple way to create extra surface space in a bathroom. ‘I wanted the bathroom to be a place where I could go and relax with some candles and a glass of wine,’ says Sarah. ‘There are no flat sides on the bath to rest anything on, so the bridge is a great solution. I like the way the wood works with the plants and this one is extendable so it fits perfectly.

‘I was inspired by my mum’s cast-iron freestanding bath. It’s lovely and deep, and I really wanted to find something similar within my budget’
Bathroom makeover Sarah stuck to her budget and found an affordable alternative to a cast-iron free-standing bath with a roll-top from Victorian Plumbing. The sloping ends are lovely for relaxing and placing the shower head in the middle means there’s a safe space to stand and shower too
Picking a basin on a chrome stand adds to the traditional feel of the room, as does the vintagestyle mirror above it.
My experience… When I first saw this house online, I didn’t pay much attention as I didn’t like the look of the outside. But with the arrival of my son, Woody, getting closer we really needed to move, so we arranged a viewing. Right away I loved the big kitchen and I thought we could eventually improve the outside, but the bathroom was a different story. This was the only room that hadn’t been touched and even after a good scrub it still looked grubby. I particularly hated stepping onto the carpet after a shower; I felt dirty all over again! We knew we’d need to save up as everything needed ripping out – we lived with it as it was for nearly four years. One thing I liked the look of was the old-fashioned high-cistern toilet and that inspired the traditional-style bathroom fittings. Instagram was good for ideas and I share posts through my account @haighyshomeinyorkshire. This was where I saw a picture of a roll-top bath with a shower over the top – it makes the room feel so much bigger. I’ve put my own stamp on the space with the graphite walls, patterned floor tiles and blind. I’m really into pattern and fabrics, and luckily I work next to a lovely fabric shop. They helped me find a blind fabric with a charcoal background to go with the walls. I’m still on the hunt for a shelving unit that doesn’t hide the pretty towel radiator, but apart from that I’m happy.

Privacy was our priority Smart screening and space-saving solutions transformed Toni Scarr’s tiny garden into a relaxing, low-maintenance retreat, hidden from view
My garden… My problem garden Our tired and neglected patch looked straight out over the neighbours’ gardens, thanks to a low fence. It felt completely exposed and relaxing outside wasn’t really an option.
A bit about me
Style idea Choose low-maintenance, pressure-treated timber furniture that can be left outside
I’m Toni Scarr, 36, and I live with my husband Chris, 35, in a listed terraced property in Thanet, Kent.
How I made it work My aim was to create a private courtyard that required very little upkeep. We replaced the rotten fencing with a much taller one to enclose the garden and by carefully zoning the space we were able to squeeze in separate seating and dining areas. Using plenty of all-weather materials, plus easy-care planters, satisfied my desire for low-maintenance, while pale-painted finishes helped to open up the space.

I’m particularly proud of my lovely galvanised trough planters, which I found through a farming supplies specialist. I’ve planted them up with lots of climbing jasmine, honeysuckle and bushy hydrangeas. August 2020 99
Style advice Three simple tricks to try in your garden
Fake it Artificial grass is a great for compact or shady gardens and requires nothing more than a quick brush to keep clean! Toni and Chris bought their grass by the metre and laid it directly over the existing level paving, which allows them to roll it back and reveal an ugly but necessary manhole when required. ‘It’s anchored by all the planters and furniture so doesn’t move until we need it to,’ smiles Toni.
Revamp tired pieces Rather than invest in new outdoor dining furniture, Toni decided to save money by updating a serviceable, space-saving folding table and chairs using paint. ‘I love working with spray paint as it’s such a quick and easy way to instantly transform tatty furniture,’ she says. Experience has taught Toni to build up the colour gradually using thin layers in order to ensure even coverage and no drips.
Get things organised Good storage is vital in smaller spaces and Chris’s fantastic home-made unit has been designed to not only hold garden essentials but also hide an ugly meter box. ‘It’s made from old scaffold planks and decking offcuts, so it cost next to nothing,’ explains Toni. ‘Even our meter reader was impressed with the result!’ For an allweather finish, Chris also applied a little oil, left over from sealing the decking. 100 yourhomestyle.uk h t l k
‘I couldn’t resist buying the tall, slender planter that now holds my prized olive tree’
Garden makeover A change in materials from practical timber decking to soft artificial grass denotes dining and seating areas, and injects textural interest in this compact space
Light-reflecting, pale-painted fencing helps open up this small garden and provides a welcome contrast to the sturdy sleeper furniture
My experience… Our garden could hardly be called large and, while privacy was a priority, we worried that adding high fencing might result in a cramped and claustrophobic courtyard. By choosing 1.8m panels with some open slat detailing, we were able to minimise the impact. Working with the existing fixing plates also made replacing the old fence and gate easier. We weren’t so lucky with our only hedge however, as sadly it too had to be replaced with fencing. The transformation was immediate, though; the garden instantly felt intimate and cosy. It was while out shopping for paint that Chris stumbled across our flooring solution – easy-lay artificial grass. Rather than cover the entire garden, we chose to team it with practical decking to help define the dining area. When it came to seating, I had my heart set on an arbour, but when this proved too bulky and inflexible, a friend suggested we try a more sociable arrangement. I now love our sleeper bench and table combo. With the garden almost complete, I still felt more planting was needed to soften the space and soon filled our trough planters with climbers and shrubs. Chris, meanwhile, constructed the fantastic storage unit. And although we did go over budget – mainly due to the fencing and furniture – it was well worth it, as the garden now looks fabulous and is definitely private!

Style idea Choose built-in appliances to create a look that’s aesthetically pleasing
We dreamt of an open-plan kitchen for years Suzie Attaway has transformed her small country-style kitchen into a bright and modern family-friendly space
My room… My problem kitchen
A bit about me I’m Suzie Attaway, 46, a freelance prop stylist. I live with my husband, Phil and children Sam, 14, and Mia, 12. We live in a 1930s semi-detached house in north London.
TOTAL
The lack of space, worktops and storage was the main issue. When we moved in, we gave the room a mini makeover but 12 years on, it was looking tired again. We really longed for an open-plan kitchen with dining and work space that we could use together as a family.
How I made it work We knocked down the wall between the original kitchen and dining room. It was quite a large project, but it was the only way we could get our dream kitchen. We chose streamlined, handleless white units with plenty of storage space and work surfaces, plus a large island with breakfast bar. We also wanted lots of light – large windows and bi-fold doors were must-haves.
My favourite part

The wall tiles. I’d seen diamondshaped mosaic tiles on Pinterest and finally found a shop that stocked them in the UK. Luckily they weren’t too expensive! August 2020 105
Style advice Three simple tricks to try in your home
‘We spent nights agonising over layouts, cupboard sizes and the positioning of the sink’
Upcycle furniture ‘I looked around for colourful wooden bar stools, but they were all so expensive,’ says Suzie. ‘So I decided to paint my own with eggshell paint from The Little Greene Paint Company.’ Suzie went for different colours for each of the Nilsolle wooden bar stools, which cost £35 each from IKEA. The stools add a fun splash of colour to the mostly monochrome palette.
Choose coloured grouting Instead of white, Suzie chose a light grey grout to highlight the pattern of the white diamond mosaic wall tiles without being too overpowering. Coloured grout is also a good way to add an accent colour to a room’s scheme in a subtle but stylish way.
Remember to add finishing touches Suzie has carefully selected a small collection of white, teal and gold decorative objects and houseplants to display on her inherited retro G-Plan sideboard. ‘I love houseplants and have a few around the kitchen to add a “living” element to the room,’ she says.

Style idea Add sheepskin rugs to benches and dining chairs for a look of rustic luxury
Kitchen makeover The couple chose a light oak floor to complement their solid wooden furniture in the new extended dining area. They inherited a retro G-plan sideboard and hung a large industrial-style mirror above to reflect light around the room
One side of the island features a rack of graphite handleless drawers, providing more storage
My experience… We had simply outgrown our old kitchen. We wanted more space to cook, eat, entertain and just enjoy being together as a family, plus the kids were growing up fast and needed space to do homework. Moving house wasn’t an option as we love our quiet cul-de-sac and we’re within walking distance of the kids’ school. To create our dream kitchen, we could have simply knocked down the wall between the existing kitchen and dining room to create a bigger space. But we decided to take the plunge and apply for planning permission to extend. Once the building work had got underway, we started to look at kitchen schemes and I fell in love with the modern Scandi look – a monochrome palette with natural wooden textures, geometric patterns and the odd pop of colour. We spent ages browsing the web and visiting showrooms, but eventually opted for a matt white handleless kitchen from DIY Kitchens that was not only the perfect base for the Scandi scheme, but also within our budget. We managed to make some savings by designing the kitchen ourselves and spent many nights agonising over different layouts, cupboard sizes and the positioning of the sink and appliances. It was definitely worth spending the time getting it right as we now have our perfect kitchen.

Prep and cook time 20 MINS
Serves 4 Ingredients 4 4 salmon fillets, skinned 4 4 tsp chipotle paste 4 2 avocados 4 1 lime, juiced 4 200g zero per cent fat Greek yoghurt 4 100g White’s Jumbo Organic Oats 4 175g plain flour 4 150ml warm water 4 1 tbsp olive oil 4 4 spring onions, trimmed and finely chopped 4 1 tsp mild chilli powder 4 1 tbsp sunflower oil 4 1 little gem lettuce, finely shredded 4 1 large carrot, peeled and finely shredded 4 Small handful fresh coriander 4 Thinly sliced red chilli to garnish 4 Salt and freshly ground black pepper
Method
1
Preheat the grill to high. Line a tray with foil and arrange the salmon fillets, skinned side down. Season the fillets with salt and pepper, then cover them with the chipotle paste. Grill them for around 8-10 minutes until they begin to char and are cooked through.
2
While the salmon fillets cook, peel the avocados and remove the stones. Place the flesh into a food processor with the lime juice and yoghurt, and whizz until the mixture is thick and smooth. Season to taste and place it in the fridge until you use it. Mix together the oats, plain flour, water, olive oil, spring onions, chilli powder and salt and pepper to form a soft dough. Divide the dough into 4 equal pieces. Place a large piece of cling film onto your work surface, dust it with plain flour and place one piece of dough in the centre. Dust with more plain flour, cover it with a second piece of cling film, then roll the dough out to form a rough 20cm circle. Brush a non-stick frying pan with the sunflower oil and heat. Peel off the cling film and cook the flatbread for 1-2 minutes on each side until browned. Keep it warm in the bottom of the grill, underneath the salmon. Wipe out the frying pan with kitchen paper, then brush it with a little more oil and heat. Repeat the process to make 4 cooked flatbreads (the dough will be soft, so you need to use new pieces of cling film for each piece and dust them all with flour). When you’re ready to serve them, spread some avocado purée over each flatbread, then scatter over some shredded lettuce and carrot. Break the salmon into pieces and scatter them over the avocado purée with the coriander and red chilli to garnish.

Freeze and stir it again after another 90 mins, then freeze it overnight until it’s completely firm. Take the container out of the freezer 30 mins before you plan to serve it. This will allow the ice cream to soften slightly before you start scooping.

IN CONVERSATION WITH
Anna Jacobs We speak to the artist and homewares designer about what inspires her How did it all begin? Nine years ago I left my job in the City to become an artist – ideally not an impoverished one! I also began designing homewares from my art and very soon I had a fully-fledged brand. Then, 18 months ago, I moved into my current rental flat and it was such a beautiful space, but completely neutral, that I just had to decorate it and add colour and art! It’s been wonderful to see people’s reactions to all the bright colour.
Describe a typical day I start work at around 5am to get in a good 90 minutes before I take the kids to school. Then I walk the dog while replying to Instagram messages and making calls. I then go back to work at the desk in my bedroom to tackle all the business admin, but have to intersperse it with designing, which keeps me feeling alive! Then there’s second school run, kids, more work until about 11pm and then I collapse. The life of a single parent entrepreneur!
Describe your style I’d say fresh and vibrant with a sprinkling of delight and a whole lot of art. I like creating a space that gives you the feeling of living inside a piece of joyful art.
Feature Alison Davidson
Can a home be both stylish and practical?
Anna has a talent for combining bold colours with natural elements, such as birds and botanicals
Well of course! The key thing is to think about your materials, so that they look fabulous, but can be messed up by kids without you getting stressed. For example, our old sofa is covered in pink brushed-cotton curtains from IKEA that give the impression of a pale pink velvet
sofa (entirely impractical). But in fact, I can just chuck the covers in the wash when they get dirty! I also use outdoor rugs inside – they’re synthetic and stain resistant, but look incredible and are feel really soft underfoot.
Who are you stalking on Instagram? All the colour hashtags, #colormadetheroom, #mycolourfulinterior, #livefabulousandfearless, #crashbangcolour, etc for amazing colour inspiration!
Where do you find your inspiration? Predominantly from art and nature around me. Of course, I’m constantly scrolling through Instagram and get great ideas from there, but I do worry that I’ll get lost in a generic Instagram look and lose my independent voice. So, for my design I look a lot at different artists and even fashion.
What’s your proudest career moment? Probably opening my shop last year. Sadly, I closed it after nine months, because it was too challenging running it as a single parent. So now I mainly run an e-commerce business and work blissfully and flexibly at home!
Who would you love to collaborate with? I’d love to collaborate with a ceramicist to create a range of beautifully colourful dinnerware and ceramic vases! For more from Anna, visit www.annajacobsart.com or @annalysejacobs
