HOW TO

style the look 1

Think 1970s California with this look. Natural textures, such as rattan and wood, will give your room a retro style, but bring things up to date by picking lighter wooden shades. Combine warm earthy tones with candy colours for a playful, summer beach house vibe. Steer away from mixing lots of heavily patterned prints and focus on colour blocking – this creates a great backdrop for one or two statement prints to shine.

The previous owners had installed a simple white-gloss kitchen that included integrated appliances and high-quality quartz work surfaces. As well as tiling and painting the walls, Sophie and Rich added open shelves to boost storage and display treasures

Welcome to my home A bit about me I’m Sophie Mumford (@sophie_mumford_ interiors). I live with my husband Rich, our sons Lennon, eight, Sonny, six, and Bowe, one, as well as our cat Luna.

Where I live Our home is a fivebedroom, semi-detached Edwardian house in Winchmore Hill, north London. We’ve lived here since May 2015.

What I wanted to change The plain, neutral décor made the rooms feel sterile and uninspiring. The house needed colour, warmth and personality to reenergise it and bring out the period features.

How I made it my own We’ve introduced strong colours, bold patterns, characterful furniture and upcycled one-offs.

My favourite part The bathroom – it’s got real individuality. I love my beautiful bath and it didn’t cost a fortune.

‘I’ll always try to use what I’ve already got and buy second-hand from auctions, charity shops or the recycling centre whenever I can’ Kitchen

‘We were very lucky to inherit a modern kitchen that didn’t need much money spent on it. It was a bit unexciting – just plain white units and pale grey walls – but that meant it was easy to refresh and update. I was keen to paint the walls dark and I used Farrow & Ball’s Down Pipe, which I think has worked well, as it’s bold and makes the units stand out. I’m so pleased with my splashback. I spotted the tiles when I was researching for our bathroom. They were too expensive for a whole room, but I could afford a small area. Those gorgeous teal-coloured tiles absolutely make the kitchen. Quite a few friends have seen them and then chosen something similar themselves.’

The kitchen shelves show off a characterful china collection alongside one of Sophie’s late father’s old cameras. ‘There’s pottery by local craftspeople, pieces from holidays abroad and even budget bits from TK Maxx, and most of it gets used every day,’ she says

My story… We loved our two-bedroom maisonette in north London, but by the time our second little boy, Sonny, was born we were running out of space. My husband Rich and I agreed we wanted a family house with period details and plenty of character, and we knew we’d have to move further out for an affordable property that we loved. With young children, a big renovation project wasn’t an option, so this house was perfect. The interior was in good shape – the original features such as the ceiling mouldings and fireplaces were intact, and I loved the beautiful old stained glass in the French doors. Some things, like the neutral bathroom and dark laminate flooring weren’t to my taste, but overall it was a blank canvas where we could make our own mark. Over the last five years we’ve decorated right through, adding dramatic colour, pops of pattern and extra furniture as and when we’ve needed it. I’ve inherited an eclectic style from my parents, who were both artists, and I love combining old and new. Rich and I have various pieces of art that we treasure, and other than that, I just go for things I like, without worrying about any particular colour palette or theme. I’m also very much a make-do-and-mend person, so I’ll always try to use what I’ve already got and buy second-hand from auctions, charity shops or the recycling centre whenever I can. If something’s a bit battered, I can revamp it with paint, new handles or whatever. Our home’s always evolving as the boys grow up and our needs change, but it’s relaxed and welcoming – it’s definitely my happy place. 14 yourhomestyle.uk

‘We got our dining room table on eBay’, says Sophie. ‘The top is a reclaimed French barn door, which we’ve protected with varnish. The old pendant light above was too small and didn’t have enough impact, so I replaced it with this fabulous beaded one from Matalan’

Inspiring homes

Dining area ‘Although the dining zone is part of the open-plan area, I wanted it to feel distinct from the kitchen and snug. The off-white walls and tall cabinets in the alcoves were already here, and I like the airy, bright feel, so rather than extending the dark grey, we’ve kept the same light palette. The room gets a lot of family use, but there’s nothing too precious here. The big table was an eBay buy and the rug was £60 from the local auction house, so spills and stains don’t really matter. I like our mix-and-match dining chairs – we often change them if we spot appealing alternatives in a second-hand shop or the recycling centre. I try to have a ‘one in, one out’ policy, so I’ll sell the ones we don’t want, or donate them to charity, so we don’t accumulate too much stuff.’

Colourful accessories brighten up the snug’s comfy grey sofa, which came from Sofa Workshop. The striking retro floor lamp – an original American design – was a great-value find at the local Southgate Auction Rooms

Original features, such as the hall’s practical, tiled floor and pretty stained glass windows were a big draw for Sophie and Rich. The console table, which Sophie picked up on eBay, has been transformed with paint, découpage and new handles

‘I love having personal, meaningful things around me,’ says Sophie. ‘Our retro, glass-topped coffee table used to belong to my granny and I found the big painting, covered in dust, in my late dad’s attic some years ago’

The couple sanded, stained and varnished the original floorboards to get the desired finish. ‘We laid a big rug for softness, as the boys play in here a lot,’ says Sophie. ‘We gave the old flooring to some friends who could use it, so it didn’t go to waste either’

Expert advice How to upcycle second-hand furniture Upcycling stretches your budget, gets you something unique and saves usable items l Second-hand shops, house clearances and car boot sales are great places to source furniture. Auctions are another option and you don’t have to be there to bid. If you do attend the sale, be firm and stick to your budget. l Repurpose salvaged furniture. Remove cabinet doors to create open storage or lift drawers out to leave shelves. Make a coffee table by cutting down or replacing the legs on a full-height table.

16 yourhomestyle.uk

l Painting is the most obvious tool for upcycling old furniture, and it’s also quick and effective. Specialist products such as Annie Sloan’s Chalk Paint are easy to use, and work on many different surfaces. Apply a coloured wax afterwards for a characterful, aged effect. Also look at adding or upgrading fixings such as handles, hinges and legs, all of which will alter the piece’s look. l Découpage is a brilliant way to introduce decorative patterns. Gift wrap, paper napkins, wallpaper or images cut from magazines are all suitable for flat surfaces such as a box or tabletop. Once in position, seal your paper pieces with a découpage or PVA glue, followed by a few layers of varnish.

Main bedroom ‘I wanted our bedroom to feel restful but still interesting and eclectic. The subtle grey is perfect for the walls, as I’ve got some much-loved artwork on show in here. The bedroom furniture is almost all second-hand. Our beautiful French bed and the antique wardrobe were both eBay finds. The bedside tables are upcycled, and there’s a little chest of drawers I rescued from my late dad’s art studio, years ago. My desk, which I got at the local auction, sits in the big bay window. The curtains came with the house and while they’re not my ideal, they’re goodquality, neutral and would be expensive to replace. We simplified the heavy, oldfashioned pelmet, which was dominating the room and blocking light, and now I don’t really notice them at all.’

Mix and match ornate, interesting frames to maximise the impact of your gallery wall

SHOP Shop muted tropicals on page 20

The bedroom walls are painted in Farrow & Ball’s Blackened, which acts as a subtle backdrop for the eclectic gallery wall. Vintage reading lamps add a contrasting functional feel beside the decorative upholstered bed September 2020 17

Bowe’s bedroom ‘This little room is actually one of my favourites, because it has so much character. There’s a step down into it and it’s got a quaint, little fireplace and a gorgeous window. It was very plain before, with the same dark-brown floor as the sitting room, so we’ve restored the original boards, which makes it feel much brighter. To create a focal point and add colour, I hung a big Frida Kahlo poster, which will be easy to change when Bowe starts getting his own decorating ideas. I upcycled the fitted wardrobe myself. It was hideous, but too awkward to get out of the room and I didn’t want to lose the storage. I painted it and découpaged the panels with a fabulous tiger wallpaper, and it’s completely transformed the wardrobe.’

‘I kept the curtains that were here in Bowe’s room already, as they’re neutral and do a great job blocking the light,’ says Sophie. ‘His cot is a family hand-me-down and the Lloyd Loom chair was a charity shop buy that I’ve painted’ 18 yourhomestyle.uk

Inspiring homes ‘I used Down Pipe from Farrow & Ball again in the bathroom and it makes a crisp contrast against the white wall tiles. I spent ages looking at floor tiles, before spotting these in Wickes. They weren’t expensive and I love the 1980s vibe’

Bathroom ‘The bathroom was our most ambitious project, as we’ve completely changed it. It was quite dated before, with a fitted bath and sand-coloured tiles on the walls and floor. I wanted something more original and I put a big Pinterest folder together with all my ideas. I’d set my heart on a proper cast-iron bath and I found one to fit the space perfectly. Choosing a washstand I liked wasn’t so easy. Eventually I got an old wooden chest for £20 at the recycling centre and we converted it. Things have to be practical for a young family, so it’s got lots of storage and I’m not concerned about it getting watermarked, as it wasn’t a big investment. The brass taps I wanted were just too pricey, so I opted for chrome, but I found a lovely traditional design, so I’m more than happy with them.’

‘I knew I wanted white metro wall tiles, with dark grey grout for impact. The black Crittall-look shower screen was another must-have as it picks up the rectangular pattern. I rescued the nifty corner cabinet from the recycling centre’

‘We painted the loft room in Farrow & Ball’s Hague Blue, which makes a good foil for the pale floor. Our G-Plan sideboard was an eBay bargain some years back and the glass coffee table, passed on from Rich’s godparents, adds to the room’s retro feel’

What I learned… l Charity shops are a useful place to look for everyday crockery and glassware. I often find smaller accessories there too, such as vases, planters, picture frames and mirrors, and it’s guilt-free shopping as you don’t pay much. l Original art doesn’t need to be expensive. Look in antique shops and art fairs for well-priced items. Sites like Etsy and Artfinder offer affordable, original works, or look online for artists willing to work to commission within a budget. l You can pep up a room quickly simply by moving things. We sometimes rearrange furniture, change the artwork around or swap rugs, plants, mirrors and bits and pieces from one room to another. Add a new lampshade or a couple of cushions for a budget-friendly refresh.

Top tip

First, spray the wire basket and chain with white paint. Make sure you’re in a well-ventilated room protected with dust sheets. Allow it to dry before applying a second coat. Cut a 35cm length of beading string and tie a 6mm bead to one end. Thread another two 6mm beads, followed by three of each size of bead: 8mm, 10mm, 12mm, 14mm, 16mm and 20mm, to make one strand. Repeat this step to make 50 strands of beads. Make 15 more strands as before, but this time without the 20mm beads. Begin attaching the longer strands of beads around the top of the wire basket, triple knotting to secure each tightly in place. Attach the shorter lengths around the bottom ring of the basket. Carefully trim any excess string with scissors.

THE WAY YOU LIVE INSPIRES US TO CREATE

Welcome to my home A bit about me I’m Hayley Southwood and I run a business networking and online interiors hub, Southwood Living. I live with my husband Paul and our two sons, Callum, 22, Jake, 20, and our family dog, Sid.

Where I live Our home is part of a converted stables dating from 1915 in a village outside Milton Keynes.

‘I love the potential this house has given us as a family and as a business’

Feature and Styling Ciara Elliott Photos Rachael Smith

What I wanted to change The house has a few original features that I knew we could accentuate. I wanted to make the house feel homely with a fresh, modern twist.

How I made it my own We pulled up carpets, exposed original parquet and just painted everywhere.

My favourite part The kitchen. We couldn’t afford new cabinetry, so we repainted the cupboards and replaced handles and tiles.

Our house is In just 18 months, Hayley Southwood and husband 24 yourhomestyle.uk

Snug ‘Before we moved in, I knew I wanted to use the snug as the TV room, and I was desperate to create a separate lounge that felt special. I also wanted a grown-up room where we could sit, chat and relax, with lots of favourite books and pretty things around us. This room was quite tricky to paint as it has original brickwork, parquet flooring and low-beamed ceilings. Originally, I went for an emerald green in here and it was a huge mistake! It’s now Setting Plaster by Farrow & Ball, which I’ve used before in our previous house. I love how calm it feels.’

My story… When we first viewed this house, we instantly said no. It felt like it needed an overwhelming amount of work and we were worried we didn’t have the budget to make the changes. The garden is over an acre, but it was waist-high with weeds and felt so daunting. The kitchen was very dated and the bathroom was from the 1980s. We were worried we’d be taking on too much as it was a big project. But I was also paying for office space for my business at the time and when we went away and did the sums, we realised that this move would allow me to run my business from home, which made it possible financially. So, we returned to the house and put our highest offer in, which was – despite being less than the asking price – thankfully accepted. From then on, it was a whirl of hands-on renovating. Using Pinterest, we planned the rooms and worked out what we needed. Luckily, Paul is very handy, so we could do a lot of it ourselves, including painting, plastering and tiling. Doing it on such a tight budget has been an amazing learning curve. We’ve managed to redecorate room by room and have created a beautiful, calm space that works for our grown-up family and my work needs. We’ve only been here 18 months and I’m definitely still in the honeymoon period. I love every room, but all for very different reasons. This room has been complete transformed. ‘It was a dark games room when we first moved in,’ says Hayley. ‘We ripped everything out and painted it in Setting Plaster by Farrow & Ball. Now it feels serene and calm’

A pair of Rupert three-seater sofas from Dunelm adds a sumptuous feel to the living room, with plenty of space for guests to sit. Expert advice How to repaint your kitchen cabinetry Give wooden cupboards a refresh with a lick of paint l Prepare your surfaces. Remove knobs and handles and use masking or painter’s tape to protect hinges and glass. Wash your cabinets down. l When the cabinets are dry, give them a quick sand with fine paper. If there are blemishes and cracks in the woodwork, you’ll need to use a ready-mixed filler and fill any imperfections. l Apply a wood primer. This will prevent paint from chipping later

and helps paint to stick better. Let the primer dry and then sand again with a fine paper to ensure a smooth, professional finish. Remember to wipe off any dust with a damp cloth. l Now you’re ready to paint. Fill the deep end of your paint tray and dip a small foam roller into it. You’ll need two coats of paint. Touch up specific areas with a paintbrush. l When the second coat is dry, remove the masking tape and reattach the knobs and handles. If you want an extra layer of protection, brush on a sealant, such as polyurethane or furniture wax, after the paint dries. Let this top coat dry completely before using the cupboards.

Dining room ‘We wanted the dining room to be a light, bright space where we could share extended family meals. I also use this space for our Southwood Hub communal meet-ups, so the room is a social space that can hold up to 20 people. The wood-burning stove was already here and is a lovely little feature, making the room feel cosy and snug. The artwork over the dining table is by my friend Shaneen Rosewarne Cox who is a fabulous photographer and now sells her work through her website and the overhead lights are real statement pieces by House Doctor.’

‘The vaulted ceiling in the dining room is a really unusual feature, which I love’

Overhead lighting from House Doctor at Amara provides a touch of glam at mealtimes, while the Viscose blue rug from Benuta and Shaneen Rosewarne Cox wall art adds a homely touch

Bedroom ‘This is our own adult-only sanctuary, a space where Paul and I can hide away from our busy household. It’s a light, bright and modern space, with soft wool carpets and a deep bath in the corner, which makes it feel like we’re on holiday. I can’t live without a good soak with Epsom salts. When we can get away, we love a boutique hotel break so Paul suggested we put a bath in our bedroom. I was a little worried about it, I must admit, but it was one of the best decisions we made.’

Take inspiration from favourite hotels and restaurants – the bathtub in Hayley’s master bedroom was inspired by a visit to Soho House

Inspiring homes With its white walls, feature wall lights and centrepiece bathtub, there’s a boutique hotel feel to Hayley’s master bedroom. ‘I love the adult-only sanctuary we’ve created here,’ says Hayley

When Hayley and Paul’s son Jake is away at university, his room doubles as a spare room. The Malm beside tables and Mosslanda picture ledge from IKEA help create a clean, uncluttered feel

Style idea Use images by the same artist throughout your home for a consistent style

‘Doing this on such a tight budget has been an amazing learning curve’ The design of Hayley’s en suite centres on her pink Kast basin, with its clean lines and Scandi-inspired design

What I learned… l You don’t always need to rip out the kitchen in order to create a new look. This is our fifth house and we learned so much more about recycling, reusing and repurposing this time around. Painting the kitchen cupboards gave it a brand new lease of life. l Instead of hiring contractors, learn how to do things yourself to save money. Paul roped his dad in to help with painting rooms and my dad did a lot of the groundwork outside to create better parking. l Don’t be hasty with colour choices. I went for an emerald green in the snug at first and it was a huge mistake! My father-in-law kindly repainted it, but it was a horrible task and such a waste of time.

First, measure the diameter and height of the old lampshade and cut a piece of cane webbing to size, allowing for a small amount of overlap. Place some weighted objects on the cane to flatten it for a couple of hours. Meanwhile, carefully strip the fabric from the old lampshade and remove any hardened glue with a piece of sandpaper. Start sticking the webbing to the first lampshade ring with the glue gun, working around the ring a few centimetres at a time. Repeat at the other end with the second ring. Once the glue has dried and hardened, carefully trim the excess cane at the top and bottom of the shade with scissors. Weave the natural raffia ribbon around the top and bottom of the shade to create a neat finish.

Welcome to my home A bit about me I’m Shreenal, but I’m known as Shrez, 27. I live with my husband, Tom, 28, and Maui, our Cavalier King Charles.

Where I live Our home is a fourbedroom Victorian terraced house in Plumstead, south-east London. We’ve lived here for two years.

What I wanted to change

Feature Maxine Brady Photos David Woolley

The house was a wreck. It had been rented for years and all the original features had been stripped out.

How I made it my own We renovated it all. We flipped the layout and installed new bathrooms and a kitchen.

My favourite part Our bargain stone bathtub that we placed by a window. Now when you take a bath, you can admire our side courtyard, while remaining private.

Kitchen ‘Originally the kitchen was used as the main living space with magnolia walls and old beige carpet. It was a very long, empty room that lacked heart or soul,’ says Shrez. ‘When we plastered the wall, it was one of the turning points in our build. It felt like the end was near and I fell in love with the texture, colour and feeling that fresh plaster gave me. It didn’t feel right to cover it with paint, so we left it unpainted as part of our design and saved money on paint as a result! ’ The couple installed a large window at the rear of the property to allow daylight to flood the room. They bought IKEA base units, but got their unusual door fronts from Plykea. ‘We kept our original floorboards, but replaced any that were damaged with ones from upstairs,’ explains Shrez.

We moved our Changing the layout and clever decorating ideas have 38 yourhomestyle.uk

Inspiring homes Rather than clutter up their new kitchen with wall units, the couple decided to go for simple wooden shelving with brackets from IKEA, which they’ve filled with colourful accessories

kitchen upstairs transformed Shrez Ghelani’s once-unloved property into a stylish home September 2020 39

In the kitchen and throughout her home, Shrez has installed shelves which gives the illusion of more space

Dining room ‘We replaced the old uPVC windows with new sash-style ones. They block out sound from the street and keep the house warm in the winter months,’ says Shrez. On the wall, the couple hung a row of IKEA Ivar units, which they painted in Nancy’s Blushes by Farrow & Ball. A handy made-to-measure window seat decorated with cushions by Bluebellgray and John Lewis & Partners makes the perfect spot to watch the world go by. The dining table and chairs are by West Elm and above them hangs a chandelier by Pooky.

My story… After four years of living in a 1.5-bed flat, we wanted a bigger home. We couldn’t afford to stay in Woolwich, so looked nearby at Plumstead, which was much more affordable. We fell in love with the area as it was an altogether greener part of south-east London with lots of great spots for dog walks. The house was in need of a complete renovation and the layout of the rooms was crazy! You had to walk into the garden to access the kitchen and the main bathroom led off from a bedroom. We kept the original footprint of the house, but changed the layout. In May 2018, our builders stripped the entire house back to bare brick. The kitchen was ripped out and walls were put in to divide up two bedrooms to make way for two new bathrooms. We also swapped the living room and kitchen to make better use of the space. Our new home was a building site, so we continued to live in our flat up the road. At 6am every morning, I’d visit the site to answer the builders’ questions and drop by again in the evenings to check on the work. By October 2018, we were finally able to move in. The downstairs was finished, but we still had to do the upstairs rooms. We taught ourselves DIY skills by watching YouTube videos and learnt how to put up coving and fit skirting. Weekends and evenings were spent up ladders painting. Although we’ve made some of the bedrooms smaller, our home works for us now. It’s such an incredible feeling to have built somewhere like this that we enjoy living in so much. 40 yourhomestyle.uk

The Victorian sash window bay has been turned into a cosy reading nook – complete with a collection of cushions – and as a sunny spot for the couple’s dog to sit and relax in. Flooded with light, it’s an ideal place for houseplants too. Use window film for added privacy if you want to copy this idea

Expert advice How to stick to your budget If you’re taking on a huge renovation project, here’s how to make sure you don’t overspend… l Get a price for every element of each room and keep a record of them all in a spreadsheet. When you start to spend money on your home, break the purchases down room by room. This will help you keep on top of costs. l If you fall in love with an item that wasn’t in your original costings, take money away from another part of your budget, rather than adding it onto your overall costs.

42 yourhomestyle.uk

l Don’t go shopping when you’ve run out of money! Save up for things first or find interest-free finance options. l Shop savvy and don’t just look at high street stores. Look out for things that people are throwing away – Gumtree has a whole freebie section. Try eBay, flea markets and only splash the cash on bargains. l It’s worth spending money on things that you’ll have for a long time, such as radiators and carpets, but spend less money on accessories. l Do things yourself as much as you can – don’t be afraid of getting your hands dirty. There are lots of lessons on YouTube and Instagram.

Inspiring homes

‘We’ve grown confident in our DIY skills with this house. We’ve learnt how to renovate our home over time’

By installing sliding doors leading out to the garden and adding an eco bioethanol fireplace, the living area works well all year round

Living room

‘This was originally the kitchen, which you had to access through the garden. There were old-fashioned wooden cabinets on the walls, lino flooring and a cheap laminate worktop,’ Shrez remembers. ‘We ripped it all out and put in sliding doors on two angles, so we would get a 180° view of the garden. On the floor, concreteeffect tiles were fitted that run out onto the garden patio to give that feeling of indoor/outdoor living. We took the ceiling off the extension as we liked the idea of a sloped roof with a reading nook at the top. We had shelving made that you can walk up to reach the loft area and installed an eco-friendly bioethanol fireplace to keep the room cosy in the winter.’

To add personality to the bedroom, Shrez has dressed the bed in beaded cushions by Oliver Bonas and a linen throw from HomeSense. She chose a roomy chest of drawers from Swoon Editions and hung the Stockholm mirror from IKEA above it

‘I added a pop of red to this room with a Habitat ceramic jug’ says Shrez

Master bedroom The couple taught themselves how to paint and decorate. ‘We pulled up all the carpets and repaired the lumpy walls. Every room was plastered and we fitted new skirting ourselves,’ says Shrez. ‘We tore down the fake polystyrene coving, which looked out of place and put in statement lighting we found at a flea market.’ Above the bed hang pressed flowers from Shrez’s wedding bouquet made by Flower and Press.

Inspiring homes In the window of the en suite, Shrez has added Balinese storage baskets from La Redoute to add a pop of colour. The industrial-style taps are from Meir Black

Bathroom To create an en suite, the couple stole space from their downstairs bedroom. ‘We had a wall and sliding doors installed in our mas ter bedroom to create our new bathroom,’ Shrez says . The stone resin bathtub was a bargain find on eBay and on the floor are tiles from Diespeker & Co. ‘We positioned the bath so that you can look out of the window onto the garden whe n having a soak.’ The pill-shaped back-lit mir ror, by Roper Rhodes, turns on by touch. For a clean, modern look Shrez went for an all-white scheme with elements of matt black, tying features such as the black mixer taps over the free-standing bath with the ladder towel rail

The black-framed shower screen, from Impey Showers, gives this bathroom a polished look

What I learned… l Think about how your family will use the space and what sorts of layouts and colours will make you happy. Don’t choose the things that other people will like – you’ll be miserable and you’ll end up changing it to what you wanted in the first place. l If you have an idea and you know how to make it work, persevere with it. Just because it hasn’t been done before, or it might not be easy, doesn’t make it impossible. Work through it with your builders, create detailed drawings and share inspo images to show them how it could work. l It’s easy to get disheartened by looking at all the things left to do. It’s more rewarding and motivating to look back at how much you’ve done.

Our dining room is a modern space full of pastel shades, which I’ve also managed to make sticky-finger proof! We wanted to create a bright and colourful space that’s easy on the eyes but also easy to clean. We’ve styled the room with plants, pastels and geometric shapes. Not forgetting the added touch of one of my favourite patterns – polka dots! @thejonesabode

We bought a beautiful but tired three-storey, double-fronted Victorian semi in 2018. Originally this room was a creepy attic space with a small roof window and the electrics running up the woodchip walls. We knew there was unused space in the roof eaves that we could use to extend the room and add storage. So the wall came down, we added another roof window and got plastering! @twosunsetview Xx 2020 49

A bright, modern vibe has been achieved by contrasting a pared-back wooden dining table and stools against dramatic dark cabinetry. My story… Phil and I had just recently got engaged and were planning to move back to our hometown of Leeds when we saw this house. It was within walking distance from parks and the city centre, and we got a good feeling about it from the moment we walked in. We loved that it had potential and we knew we could put our own signature on it. I’d definitely recommend going with your gut feeling when looking for your future home. We had seen so many places that just didn’t feel right and I’m glad we didn’t rush into anything. The first thing we did was to change the magnolia walls and carpets to a more muted palette, and we also reconfigured the loft room to create a larger en suite bathroom and master bedroom. We left the kitchen area as we wanted to live in the house for a while before making the big changes to make sure we got them right. We spent six months drawing up plans and a further year getting the permissions that we needed. The building work to create the new open-plan kitchen-diner, utility area and garages took another six months. We mostly went for neutral colours, but then there are some really strong shades throughout the scheme too. For inspiration, I looked to Pinterest and magazines, and also developed a bit of an addiction to Instagram! Through doing this project I’ve definitely developed a love for interiors and, left to my own devices and with an unlimited budget, I’d probably start refreshing all the rooms. We do love the house and are so happy here, but in the future our dream would be to buy a piece of land and build from scratch. Even though it’s completely different from this, a minimal barn conversion in the countryside would be the ultimate project for us! 52 yourhomestyle.uk

Living room With its original fireplace, cornicing and calming grey walls, the living room has a classical feel. ‘We fell in love with the beautiful Edwardian detailing like the double-height doors, but wanted to bring a more contemporary feel to it,’ says Sarah. ‘We wanted this room to have a sophisticated vibe. It gets so much light and has such a lovely view to the garden.’ The wall colour in here is Elephant’s Breath by Farrow & Ball, while the framed art print is by Zara Wood.

The coffee table and armchairs are from a now-defunct interiors store called Nash Interiors, but for similar accent armchairs you could try the Kubrick wing back design from Made.com. Expert advice How to create an original kid’s bedroom

a third shade to create a small impact – for instance, mustard or coral always look good against greys and pale shades.

Make one-of-a-kind spaces for a little one with these tips

l Shop for gallery walls. You can have great fun creating a gallery wall in a child’s room. They often look best when you mix and match frames and different photos and prints. Picture ledges and shelves are another brilliant way to achieve an ever-changing gallery.

l Think beyond the high street. There are so many amazing independent brands and boutiques in the children’s interior world. Try online stores such as Ferm Living, Liewood and OYOY.

Sarah found the Victorian-look Abbey Wrightington floor tiles at Fired Earth. The Edwardian basin and stand are from Burlington Bathrooms while the Cole & Son flamingo wallpaper from Wallpaper Direct brings a fun talking point to the small space

54 yourhomestyle.uk

l Think about colours that will last some time. Sarah stuck to a palette of neutrals that feel calm and relaxing and are non-gender specific. When using two colours next to each other, make sure you pick similar tones. This will create a balanced look that works well. Add

l Experiment with storage solutions. Try structured canvas bags and peg boards, which you can pick up cheaply at Primark, H&M Home and La Redoute. Use portable baskets or wheeled boxes for storing toys and make use of wall and under-the-bed space for other books, toys and accessories.

Inspiring homes

Theo’s bedroom Sarah has created a soothing scheme in two-year-old Theo’s nursery. ‘When I was on maternity leave, our local Søstrene Grene store was my haven!’

‘I didn’t want to spend a lot on Theo’s room as he’ll grow out of it. I used decals on a neutral wall and added prints, bunting and fairy lights for texture and interest’

MAKE Make a cute cloud cushion on page 60

The vintage Ercol chair was a family gift that’s been reupholstered so it ties in perfectly with the Etch ceiling light by Tom Dixon at Nordic Nest. The star decals are by Pöm le Bon Homme at Scandibørn September 2020 55

A pair of vintage bedside tables (£50 at a local antique market) sit either side of the sumptuous Dozer bed that’s dressed with velvet and linen cushions and a Nassau throw from Soho Home. Over the bed hangs a picture of Kate Moss by Mario Testino from East Urban Home at Wayfair

Style idea Lock into a colour palette for each room and stick to a handful of shades throughout the house as you decorate

Bedroom The pale pink in the couple’s bedroom is a classic, calming colour. When paired with a natural carpet and accessorised with tones of green and lilac, the pink works to create a soothing oasis upstairs. ‘The bedside tables were my best buy,’ says Sarah. ‘They cost me £50 from a local antiques fair. I love that they’re original and unique pieces that bring a bit of rustic charm to the space.’ 56 yourhomestyle.uk

Inspiring homes The Barcelona free-standing bath from Victoria + Albert Baths and the spacious walk-in shower screams luxury in the upstairs bathroom. Oak wood-effect tiles from Fired Earth and the Antheus wash basin by Villeroy & Boch finish off the luxe look

Bathroom This bathroom was originally two small rooms that the couple knocked into one. ‘One weekend before we moved in, I came down to see the work and Phil said, ‘I’ve got something to show you’. He’d got the guys to knock the two rooms through and create this spacious light and bright bathroom. I loved it and even though it’s way bigger than we need and an indulgent use of space, it’s my sanctuary and so relaxing.’

The spare room has been decorated in a classic, country-chic style, with the single Pillow Talker bed dressed with a chequered throw and a selection of cushions. The walls are painted in Pigeon by Farrow and Ball

‘It’s an indulgent use of space, but I love our bathroom – it’s my sanctuary’

What I learned… l I definitely would have given myself more time and allowed for a lot more budget. I underestimated what the actual realities were. It all took a lot more time and a lot more money that I’d imagined. l If you’re like me and you like to mix things up and change things a lot, make sure that you don’t buy mega expensive things that might be on-trend now, but that you might not always love.’ l It’s worth splurging! I looked for months to find cheap bedside lamps for our bedroom like the Loaf ones we now have. In the end I couldn’t find anything as nice, so I splurged. But every night I’m pleased I made the decision to get the ones I really wanted.

Make the look... CLOUD CUSHION Come rain or shine, pop this cutie on your couch, like Sarah has, and it will brighten up any room Drift Marshmallow fabric, from £35.52 per m, Prestigious Textiles. Knitcraft DK yarn, £1.20; soft toy filling, £3.50, both Hobbycraft. Faux fur sheepskin rug, £25, Dunelm.

Top tip Style up your sofa with a whole cloud family made up of different-sized cushions in a mix of pastel shades.

You will need Q Cloud template Q Half a metre of pastel pink fabric Q Pencil Q Scissors Q Tape Q Black wool Q Embroidery needle Q Pink pencil Q Pins Q Needle and thread Q Stuffing

1

Go to yourhomestyle.uk and enlarge the cloud template then and print it on two pieces of A4 paper. Stick them together with tape and cut it out. Fold the length of fabric in half and place the cloud template on top. Draw around the cloud and cut out two clouds. Take one of the cloud fabric pieces and draw two eyes with eyelashes and a small mouth in the middle with a pencil. Thread the embroidery needle with black wool and stitch the eyes and mouth. Lightly draw two circles for cheeks with a pink pencil and colour them in. Pin the cloud pieces together with the embroidered face inside and then sew around the edge, leaving a small opening at the bottom. Turn the cloud cushion cover right-side out and fill with stuffing. Neatly stitch up the opening of the cushion with a needle and thread.

WHY YOU’LL

love this look l This theme takes the neutral schemes that were so popular in spring and gives them a more grown-up edge, ready for autumn. Adding richer shades for warmth. l The caramel tones of milk chocolate are great for mid-tones, use dark and white chocolate to inspire the theme’s shadows and highlights. This will help to create a balance and prevent any muddiness. l Deep cherry red is a perfect counterpart to velvety chocolate browns, just like in our other retro favourite, Black Forest gateaux. Use pale pinks for a softer look. l Choose accessories with lots of texture for a multidimensional look. Latch-hooked and Berber-style rugs will keep you cosy 64 yourhomestyle.uk

WHY YOU’LL

love this look l Peach is on track to replace ‘Millennial’ pink as our favourite rosy hue. It’s a perfect match with the earthy colours we’ve seen take over Instagram this year. l Cobalt blue and forest greens are great accent colours, providing punchy contrast and preventing the look from becoming sugary. Using green plants is a quick win. l Velvet, suede and moleskin textured fabrics give this look a sumptuous and tactile feel, just like a real peach! l Use metallics to create glistening highlights. Rose gold and copper tones work best as they’ll reflect a golden glow. l Don’t be afraid to go old-school with your pattern choices – paisley and graduated stripes are undeniable style classics. 66 yourhomestyle.uk

They’ll also feel cosy and comforting in the winter months. l Look for colours named chartreuse, olive or apple green. These will have the yellow notes that make this look feel warm. Bluebased greens will feel colder. l Pair green with pale pink or lilac for a crisp combination and a feminine twist. l This look works particularly well in rooms that face onto gardens. Top tip Set the stencil with a light layer of spray mount before laying it on the door. The spray mount will help to keep your stencil in place, without leaving any residue or marks behind

Upcycling challenge The elegance of Art Deco never goes out of style, that’s why we see so many films set in that period. The cutting-edge glamour of this look is perfect for high drama. Bring a touch of old Hollywood to your home with a sideboard that’s fit for a star.

Takes 6 hours including drying time You will need Q Sideboard Q Screwdriver Q Furniture or wood paint Q Small paint roller Q Large stencil Q Gold or metallic spray paint Q Varnish

1

Start by detaching the doors, handles and the feet of your sideboard. Then paint the main body of the sideboard in the colour of your choice (pic A). Use a paint

roller instead of a brush to achieve an even finish. Next, paint the doors to match (pic B).

2

Carefully lay your stencil on the door and use our top tip (opposite page) to help to keep it in place. Take your spray paint and begin to spray over the stencil. Hold the can at 90° from the door’s surface to prevent paint bleeding under the stencil. As you move across the door, make sure to align your stencil against the edge of a completed pattern (pic C) to ensure a consistent pattern across the doors.

How to make a

MOODBOARD Take the stress out of creating a new look, with a little help from the experts

W

e’ve all been there, full of big ideas for a makeover. But when we get to the nitty-gritty, problems start to appear. One brand’s ‘Forest Green’ may be another’s ‘Olive’. Creating a moodboard is the best way to get a true sense of how all the different elements of your new look will come together.

Pastel Victorian floor tiles, from 52p per tile, Original Style

WHY MAKE A MOODBOARD ? Moodboards take your ideas and make them tangible. You might have an inkling that blue velvet will look great with mustard walls, but seeing fabric samples and paint swatches together on a moodboard will let you know for sure. It’ll also help you to share your vision with the other people in your home and the contractors you need to bring your project to life. Collecting samples for your moodboard is a great way of discovering what’s out there. You might find a paint supplier you didn’t know about, which might lead you to a new fabric you love. When you go down these rabbit holes, a moodboard will help to keep you on the straight and narrow. It’s also a good way to keep track of your budget. Note down how many square metres of flooring or rolls of wallpaper you’ll need and recalculate costs when you add new samples to the board. A few pence difference between tiles may feel small when you’re looking at individual tiles, but over a whole floor it’ll quickly add up. A moodboard will give you an idea of how well elements match and whether the cost difference really is worth it. In the long run, it’ll help you avoid making costly mistakes. If it takes a while to buy everything you need, the moodboard will help you hold on to your original idea. Don’t be afraid of adding to the board as the work progresses – it shouldn’t feel like strict set of rules. 82 yourhomestyle.uk

Those who prefer order and structure may shy away from this project and prefer the reassuring formality of a spreadsheet. I would still recommend creating a moodboard as, once you’ve gathered all your ideas, you can let your imagination run wild and it’s much more visual. Paula Taylor, Colour & Trend Specialist at Graham & Brown

Style advice Furniture Village used this moodboard to inspire their Emerald Isle collection

HOW TO GET STARTED

To avoid being too trend-driven or just copying something you’ve seen on Pinterest or Instagram, I find it helpful to do a bit of mind mapping first. Write down all the things you can think of about the existing space, and the sort of mood and style you’re after. For instance, do you want to increase the sense of space? Does a cosy, rustic look appeal or would you like a sophisticated mix of old and new? Are clean lines your ideal? Jenny Gibbs, Principal of KLC School of Design

Stick 'em up

Begin by choosing a board. It can be anything from a noticeboard to an old wooden panel and some thumb tacks. Just make sure that whatever you use will stay reasonably rigid. Tiles and carpet samples can be heavy and a bendy moodboard will be hard to work with. You can paint your board with your base colour or, cover it with a plain fabric you want to use. But skip this step if you don’t feel ready to make those decisions yet. If your room has items you can’t change, or want to keep, take photos of them and add them to the moodboard first. It can help to cut them out if you can see a lot of the room’s original decoration around them. Don’t worry about making the board look pretty. Perfect composition isn’t important and trying to achieve it can knock your confidence. Your moodboard is a tool, rather than a presentation. It’s the recipe, not the cake! It can be handy to have a couple of images of perfectly styled rooms on the board for inspiration, but don’t rely on them too much. As you work on the moodboard you’ll begin to learn more about your own colour preferences and stylistic choices, and its these instincts that you want to develop. The clearer your vision of your future room is now, the closer to it the end result will be. Its best to work on your moodboard in the room you plan to decorate. The light in the room will affect how the samples look and you’ll see the colours change slightly during the day. If it’s not practical to work in the room, place your board in the room and go in to take a look at intervals.

complementary If I ever get stuck for colour inspiration, I head straight to the fruit and veg market. It’s here that I find combinations of colours that satisfy every taste bud. Peel a coppery-pink ripe lychee to reveal Moonwhite flesh wrapped around a glossy, conker-brown seed and you have the perfect colour scheme for a romantic bedroom. Don’t get me started on pomegranates and figs… Nature grows and ripens a feast for the eyes in every season of the year. All you have to do is fill your shopping basket. Marianne Shillingford, Creative Director at Dulux Navajo Blue, Salty Blue and Salmon Splash emulsion, £29 per 2.5l , Valspar

USING THE COLOUR WHEEL The colour wheel is the designer’s secret weapon for creating beautiful schemes. The three primary colours (red, blue and yellow) are equally spaced around the wheel, with blended hues in between. The top half of the wheel can loosely be called ‘warm’ and the bottom half ‘cool’. Red is the warmest colour and blue the coolest, so you can work out a colour’s ‘temperature’ by how close it is to them on the wheel. Warm colours will balance the coldness of the light in a north-facing room and cool colours will create a sense of freshness and space. If you’re looking for real contrasts, pair colours on the opposite sides of the wheel. These are ‘complementary’ colours and placing them together will create a look that pops. You can also use ‘split complementary’ colours to create an impactful scheme by

Complementary colours sit on opposite sides of the colour wheel 84 yourhomestyle.uk

choosing a base colour and selecting the colours next to its complementary colour. But if you want a more subtle scheme, choose colours that sit next to each other. These are ‘harmonious’ or ‘analogous’ colours and will gently blend into one another. Another way to work with colour is to use a monochromatic scheme. Monochrome literally means ‘one colour’, so your whole look will be made up of light and dark shades of the same hue. This works particularly well with neutral or earthy tones. If you’d like to find a neutral for your scheme (when choosing a colour for carpet or woodwork, for example) use your main colour’s undertone to help you get a good match. Red or orange will suit a warm cream best, whereas blue and green will sit best with cool grey. Another important thing to remember while using the colour wheel is to go with your gut. If you like a combination that doesn’t seem to follow any of the rules, but you love how it works on your moodboard, trust your instincts.

Style advice

Top tip Don’t be shy about asking for samples, many companies will give them to you for free

Always, ALWAYS get samples – even if you’re creating an online moodboard, as colours can look different in reality to how they appear on screen, and prints can appear larger or smaller. If you know you’re going to use a particular wallpaper or paint, then obviously get a swatch from that company, but if you’re unsure, it can be worth requesting a range of samples from a larger company. Paintandpaperlibrary.com is ideal for wallpaper and paint samples, while most furniture companies, such as Loaf and Sofa Workshop, will provide fabric samples. Laurie Davidson & Maxine Brady @secretstylingclub Lem Lem (green) chalk paint, £5.95 for 120ml, Annie Sloan

HOW TO USE YOUR MOODBOARD When you have a rough idea of the colours you want, use them to guide your sample choices. If you didn’t paint or cover your moodboard with your base colour or fabric at the start, do so before you begin looking for samples. Collect paint sample charts in your preferred colour scheme. Cards that show gradations of tone are helpful at these early stages. A graduated chart will show you the lightest and darkest tones of a chosen colour and as you start to build up samples you can match patterns to these tones to create a cohesive look. If you can’t find a graduated chart for a colour you want to

use, find a large sample and cover parts of it with layers of white tissue paper. This will give you an idea of paler versions you might want to match to. These pale tones will be useful when you’re looking for paint for woodwork or coving. Once you’ve chosen your base colour, it’s time to think about patterns, accent colours and ways to add texture to the look. Start with large textiles, such as curtains or blinds. Because these will hang next to the walls, it’s important to make these a good match to your base colour. To give your look a balanced texture, mix and match patterns of the same colours in different sizes. Many brands produce collections of patterns like this, so they’ll have options for you to choose from. Even if you aren’t interested in using pattern, you’ll still need to think about texture, or your scheme will look flat. Consider fine textures,

for example a chalk paint or silk, as a very small pattern and build up larger textures – carpets and bricks – to balance the look. Take a picture of your board so you can take it around with you. When you’re shopping and spot something you love, take a look at your board to see if it’ll suit your theme. If you’re still not sure, take a photograph in the shop or ask for a sample and add it to your board later. Keep going back and forth, adding and subtracting samples as you go along. Take your time and have fun working out what you like and don’t like. As you make these choices, you’ll find your confidence beginning to grow. If you get stuck and can’t make a decision, move on to a different section of the board. Making a choice about something else might help you to get unstuck. The most important thing to remember though, is to have fun! September 2020 85

BATHROOM FLOORING CHECKLIST

Add understated character with a muted patterned tile. The large format will suit both compact and spacious rooms alike Ribera Aqua porcelain tiles, from £30 per sq m, Verona

When choosing bathroom flooring, a non-slip finish should be the priority, especially for areas that come into contact with water, such as around the bath. Here anti-slip tiles come into their own, though many floorings offer a textured surface for grip. Check also that the material is water-resistant and recommended for bathrooms; many lookalike designs, such as laminate and LVT, are designed with this in mind. You’ll also want to consider something that’s easy to clean. With a wipeable smooth surface, vinyls are ideal, whereas tiles, especially small mosaics with lots of grout will need regular scrubbing. For a cosy feel underfoot choose a thick cushioned vinyl or, if you’re going for underfloor heating, consider a range of compatible products from tiles to laminate and LVT. When it comes to style, there are so many materials and designs to choose from, you’ll have no trouble giving your space a luxe look.

Kitchen makeover

I got a bespoke look for a bargain price By choosing to only update the doors of her cabinets rather than replace the whole kitchen, Lisa Moses gained a made-tomeasure space on a budget

My room… My problem kitchen

A bit about me I’m Lisa, a picture editor. I live with my husband, Matthew, a designer, and our two boys, Louis and Dillon. Our home is a four-bedroom Victorian semi in Bristol.

I really wanted to add some personality to our plain kitchen. The units were in good condition and the design of the room worked well, so we didn’t need to start from scratch. It was really a cosmetic choice rather than a structural one.

How I made it work My main priority was to inject some colour into the room. Once we were pointed in the direction of Formica, we realised that we could almost have any colour we wanted. So, we decided to commission a kitchen maker to just make new doors, which suited our budget and completely changed the look of the room.

I love the dining area. It’s so dramatic now that I’ve taken the plunge to the dark side and painted the floorboards black. Although to be honest, they’re hard work to keep clean and scratch-free, so I wouldn’t recommend it as an easy option. September 2020 93

Style idea

Style advice Three simple tricks to try in your home

Make the most of original features ‘We thought long and hard about whether to replace this cupboard with fitted units to match the rest of the space. But I love the character it adds to the room and we thought it would be a shame to rip out the last of the original Victorian features. I love to style the shelves with my favourite bits and pieces, and the cupboards and drawers are large enough to hide away ugly kitchen appliances. When we have parties I put our drinks and glasses on it and it becomes a help-yourself cocktail bar.’

Choose open storage ‘We decided not to have high wall cabinets as we didn’t want the kitchen to feel like a corridor. Open storage is great for keeping a sense of space and hanging different-sized pans, which can be difficult to get at when they’re in a cupboard. We bought this Olivia shelf from Habitat 20 years ago and it’s as good as ever. It wasn’t cheap, but it proves that quality purchases are worth the investment.’

Mix your materials A kitchen can often be a visually sterile place, but by combining different textures, colours and materials – blue Formica and birch plywood cupboard fronts, stainlesssteel drawers and wooden worktops – Lisa has created an inviting, relaxed look. ‘My taste is eclectic at the best of times, but I think it’s curated well so that it’s cohesive rather than chaotic,’ she says. ‘I don’t just chuck ideas together. I spend time making sure everything complements rather than clashes.’ 94 yourhomestyle.uk

Hang prints in a grid formation in black frames to add cohesion to an eclectic theme

Kitchen makeover Lisa has used a lot of different shades of pink, but has complemented them with black and yellow, creating a bold, rather than feminine look. The transparent Louis Ghost chair, designed by Philippe Starck for Kartell, adds a designer touch to the eclectic room

The original fitted Victorian unit provides both useful storage for kitchen items and a place for Lisa to show of her collection of pretty finds

My experience… When we first moved in 10 years ago, we chose a white and stainless-steel kitchen, but it never really suited my personality as I love colour and would call myself a maximalist. The kitchen was in good working order, though and we couldn’t justify ripping it out just because I fancied a change. I’d seen images on social media of people replacing their existing cabinet doors as a budget makeover, so we decided to explore this. Unfortunately, over the years IKEA had changed its cupboard sizes so we couldn’t just replace the doors with like-for-like ones, but we also couldn’t afford to install a whole new kitchen. I stumbled across Matt Antrobus’s work on Instagram. I loved the fact that he could make bespoke doors to our sizes without having to replace the whole unit. It saved us a fortune. I wanted something classic that could last another 10 years, so we finally chose this gorgeous blue. I also painted the back wall a soft grey to replace the stark white and mirror the colour of the Victorian dresser and the dining table, which Matt also made for us. Then we had all the doors stripped to add warmth to the look. I decided to add even more colour by painting some of the walls pink and adding bright prints and cushions to the dining area. Then, finally I went really bold and painted the dining floor black. It’s not to everyone’s taste, but we love it!

Bedroom makeover

Using neutrals has kept it versatile Turning to tones of nude brown and terracotta, Laurie Davidson has turned her bedroom into a soothing sanctuary that ticks all of her boxes

My room… My problem bedroom

Style idea Linen bedding helps create a relaxed feel with its natural crumpled effect

A bit about me I’m Laurie Davidson, a writer and stylist. I live with my partner, Wayne, and our two ginger cats in a threebedroom, 1930s chaletstyle house in Surrey.

Although we’d removed the floral wallpaper that was on the walls when we moved in, the existing décor was bland and we had a mix of furniture that didn’t really work together. The bedroom needed to have some thought put into it as the space felt anything but restful.

How I made it work I started by choosing a large mural for the wall behind the bed, which is what the scheme revolves around. Then I added wood accents and lots of texture in the form of cushions and throws to give it a cosy feel.

Turning the bay window into a little reading nook with an armchair, plant and a basket of magazines has made the room feel like it’s more than just somewhere to sleep. It’s a spot we can retreat to if we’re looking for a bit of peace and quiet, although we have to battle with the cats for a seat! September 2020 99

Style advice Three simple tricks to try in your home

Turn unused space into a feature If your room allows, create a small reading nook, with a chair, a plant and some magazines, as it will help to make the room feel cosier and less of a busy, distracting space. Laurie chose to sit this armchair from Dwell in the bay window – the chair’s square shape is nice and modern, but the slight curve to the arms and back softens the overall look.

Soften corners with hanging plants ‘The hanging plants create a bit of interest in this corner of the room. I went for two non-matching planters and hung them at different heights,’ says Laurie. ‘The terracotta planter was only £10 from George Home. The TV used to sit on this chest of drawers, but we took it out of the room and replaced it with some more decorative items instead.’

Tie in new furniture with old If you don’t want to replace all your furniture, look for new pieces that work well and have similar design elements to your existing pieces. These bedside tables have a rustic wood look, which works well with the wooden bench and bamboo-effect wardrobes. But they also have a black metal frame that sits nicely with the existing bed frame.

100 yourhomestyle.uk

Bedroom makeover Ideally the couple would have liked to replace their old wardrobe with a built-in design, but it would have meant moving the radiator. Instead, they updated it with new bamboo panels from IKEA, which gave the wardrobe an entirely new look and helped keep costs down

Style idea Use the tops of wardrobes as a spot to style up with baskets and plants

Natural textures add a relaxed, boho feel, with plant pots in woven materials and seagrass and bamboo baskets. Adding plants has helped breathe life into the scheme and also adds a pop of colour

My experience… We removed the dated floral wallpaper and ugly brown carpet in the bedroom when we moved in, but other than painting the room we hadn’t got a lot further with it. We bought a new bed, but our furniture was an eclectic mix and nothing about the room felt relaxing. I wanted it to be a cosy and soothing space, but it wasn’t until I saw the mural wallpaper, in its soft nude shade, that I decided to go for this colour palette. The mural went on the wall behind the bed and I picked out a similar colour paint for the other walls, which gave the room a warmer feel. I spotted that IKEA sells bamboo-effect panels for its wardrobes. As we had an old Pax design from IKEA, with black glass-panelled doors, we could replace the glass panels with the bamboo ones to give the wardrobe a new look without replacing the whole thing. I also found some bedside tables from Wayfair that have a black frame to match our bed, and an armchair from Dwell with black metal legs – it’s those details that tie the scheme together. Then it was on to the fun part: choosing accessories! I love natural textures and I think some of the bits I’ve chosen – such as the fringed wall hanging, woven baskets and macramé plant hangers – add a relaxed boho touch. I’m so happy with how it’s turned out and can’t quite believe it’s the same room!

Style idea Go for oversized plants to add a ‘wow’ factor, soften lines and instantly brighten a space up

Inspiration for the new bathroom came from the Dandelion floor tiles. ‘They were the starting point and inspiration for the whole bathroom, even though they took a week to lay because of the pattern!’ says Sarah

104 yourhomestyle.uk

Bathroom makeover

Changing the layout has made all the difference Fed up with guests using her en suite, Sarah Jarman-Alexander rejigged the design of her bathroom to make room for a shower and a bath in her new space

My room… My problem bathroom The old bathroom contained a modern bath, but no shower, so guests often asked to use our en suite shower room. The rest of the fittings and décor were also very dated.

A bit about me I’m Sarah, a graphic designer and I live with my husband Paul, a creative director. Our home is a fourbedroom, three-storey townhouse in Leeds.

How I made it work Removing a chimney breast that came from the kitchen to the bathroom left us with more space. We were then able to move the free-standing bath under the window and install a shower where the bath used to be. I then painted a feature wall in dark grey and decorated with a mix of vintage finds and high-street buys.

My favourite part

The floor tiles. I saw them ages ago on Pinterest and instantly fell in love with them. They took time to lay, as they’re in a complex pattern, as did the herringbone pattern wall tiles, which took a lot of patience to fit and grout. I also love our sideboard from Gumtree. September 2020 105

Style advice Three simple tricks to try in your home

Colour coordinate For a cohesive look, tie accessories in with your wall colour. A feature wall in Dulux Polished Pebble complements the set of Original 1227 wall lights from John Lewis & Partners, while towels and wall pegs from IKEA keep the scheme looking sleek. Sarah has finished her pipe wall art in a black frame, which adds to the sophisticated style.

Make it meaningful By adding family treasures and sentimental pieces, Sarah has given the space character. ‘I made the clay pipe in a box (above) using a pipe my uncle dug up years ago,’ she says. ‘I also have a first aid box from my grandmother’s house and vintage bottles. I like to mix old and new.’

Pick multipurpose furniture Be savvy with bathroom furniture and choose pieces that have multiple uses, such as Sarah’s sideboard that serves as a washstand and storage unit. ‘I found this 1950s sideboard on Gumtree and turned it into a stand for the basin from Victorian Plumbing, as well as storage for the towels,’ she says. 106 yourhomestyle.uk

‘Best of all is that our guests can now have a whole bathroom to themselves’

Bathroom makeover ‘I love the glass panel, which was specially fitted by Leeds Glass,’ says Sarah. The sleek look is completed with rectangular tiles laid in a herringbone pattern

A large mirror from Leeds Glass helps to reflect light back into the space

Style idea A single pane of glass is an easy-to-clean option for a walk-in shower

My experience… While renovating the house, we removed a chimney breast that came up through the bathroom from the kitchen below. This meant the bathroom gained about two square metres, leaving us enough room to install a separate shower. Previously there was just a freestanding bath, which was a pain because guests always wanted to use the shower in our en suite, so we never had any privacy. With the extra space, we moved the bath under the window and installed a shower where the bath had been. Moving the bath under the window immediately gave the room balance and symmetry. We also drilled holes in the bath so that taps could be fitted at its edge, with pipes running straight down and under the floorboards out of sight. The shower tray was fitted where the bath had been and a shower screen was added. The finishing touch was the gorgeous Dandelion floor tiles. I love the bathroom now – especially the shower because it’s so spacious, but I also like looking out over the garden while I’m in the bath. It’s a lovely room to relax in but, best of all, we no longer have guests knocking on our door to use the en suite shower!

My shopping list Dandelion cement tiles, £75 per 0.62 sq m, Mink Interiors. Linear matt rectangular tiles, £49.33 per sq m, Topps Tiles. For similar shutters, try the matt white shutters, from £27.49, UK Blinds. For a similar letter decoration, try the Seletti aluminium letter, £39, Selfridges. Circle mirror, £300, Leeds Glass. Cook the beans in a pan of boiling water for 3 minutes. Remove with a slotted spoon, rinse under cold water and pat dry. Add the spinach to the boiling water and cook for 30 seconds until wilted. In a 24cm non-stick, ovenproof frying pan, heat 1½ tbsp oil over a low-medium heat. Pour in the egg, scatter over the beans, spinach, tuna and potatoes, and half the tomatoes, olives and red onion. If time allows, leave to marinate for up to 1 hour. Preheat the grill to medium. Thread the marinated chicken and the lemon slices alternately onto 8 skewers (see cook’s tip below). Cook under the grill for 12-15 minutes, turning occasionally, until the chicken is nicely browned and cooked through with no pink meat. Meanwhile, place the couscous in a heatproof bowl and pour over 250ml of boiling water. Set aside for 5 minutes. Fluff up the couscous with a fork then stir in the orange zest and juice, the remaining 1 tbsp oil, the pomegranate seeds and herbs then divide between 4 plates. Top with the chicken skewers and serve with rocket and a spoonful of natural yogurt. In a bowl, mix together the sesame oil, soy sauce and grated ginger, then stir in the beef strips and leave to marinate at room temperature for 15 minutes. Heat a wok and stir-fry the beef for 4-5 minutes until nicely it’s browned and cooked through. Transfer it to a clean bowl and set aside. Add the sunflower oil to the wok and stir-fry the red onion, broccoli, mushrooms and chilli for 5 minutes until tender. Return the beef and any resting juices to the wok and stir in the oyster sauce and vinegar. Continue to cook for 1-2 minutes until it’s piping hot. Scatter over the salad onions and serve with rice or noodles.

Tuna fritters with tzatziki Prep and cook time 30 MINS

Serves 4 Ingredients For the fritters Q 2 medium potatoes, peeled Q 1 courgette Q 2 x 160g tins of tuna in water, drained Q 300g canned sweetcorn, drained Q parsley leaves, finely chopped Q 100g flour Q 2 eggs Q 1 ½ tbsp chilli flakes Q Tabasco sauce Q salt and pepper Q 2 lemons Q sunflower oil

For the tzatziki Q 1 cucumber, peeled Q 250g full-fat Greek yoghurt Q zest and juice of 2 lemons Q 1 large garlic clove, crushed Q salt and pepper

Method

1 2

To make the fritters: grate the potato and courgette and combine in a bowl. Add the tuna, corn and parsley and mix thoroughly, then add the flour and eggs. Season with the chilli flakes, Tabasco, salt and pepper. To make the tzatziki: cut the cucumber in half lengthwise and deseed. Grate the flesh and put it in a sieve. Using the rounded side of a spoon, press out as much liquid as possible and then combine the cucumber flesh in a bowl with the yogurt, lemon zest and juice, and garlic. Season with salt and pepper. Heat a generous splash of sunflower oil in a thick-bottomed frying pan over medium-high heat. Once the oil is hot enough, spoon two portions of the fritter mixture into the pan. Cook the fritters for 3-4 minutes until each one is golden brown, then flip them and cook for another 3-4 minutes, until each one is crispy and done. Lift them out and drain on kitchen paper. Repeat this step until the mixture has been used up. Serve the fritters with the two lemons cut into wedges and the tzatziki in a separate bowl.

IN CONVERSATION WITH

Anna Hill We talk to the brand director of paint and colour experts Fenwick & Tilbrook How did it all begin? Fenwick & Tilbrook was created by accident when one of the founders, Simon Tilbrook, was splitting business assets for a client following the insolvency of a brand with a ‘paint arm’ to its business. Simon saw promise and a gap in the market for a premium paint brand offering truly high-quality, pigmentrich paint and so Simon and his wife Clare (my mother) went through the process of rebranding and reformulating a gorgeous range of colours under their own brand name. I’ve been involved with the business since its creation in 2016. The three of us work closely together on all areas of the business – it truly is a family-run business!

Feature Alison Davidson

Fenwick & Tilbrook’s pigment-rich paint colours are inspired by the natural world

Describe your typical day No two days are the same, which is great. We’re a brand that’s growing quickly, so some days are very fast paced and disappear in the blink of an eye! As a small family business, we all muck in – Clare and I can often be seen creating bespoke colours or working on colour suggestions for customers who want a bit of help with their colour scheme. But equally we could be processing orders, making paint or packing boxes.

Tell us something weird and wonderful about yourself As a child I shared a bedroom with my younger sister and took a real interest in the layout and design of the room. In a bid to get some privacy I designed a room divider made from egg boxes and sent my school class

home with letters for their parents to collect their empty egg boxes to support the cause! We moved house before I’d collected enough egg boxes to see the project through, shame!

Describe your style I would say my style is fairly eclectic… probably midcentury rustic meets boho!

Who are your stalking on Instagram? We’ve recently agreed on a paint collaboration with Greg Penn (@manwithahammer) and so I’m keeping close to the progress he’s making with Admiral’s House, as I can’t wait to start seeing paint going on the walls!

Where do you find your inspiration? The natural world is a source of inspiration for paint colours and schemes. I’m a year into living in Norfolk and I still stop by the side of the road to take photos of the surrounding countryside! Instagram is always a source of inspiration for home décor ideas – especially following renovation accounts that display enormous levels of drive and hard work.

Who would you love to collaborate with? Working on a paint collection for an interiors retailer like West Elm would be amazing. I love their effortless style and company ethos for community – a global retailer with a localised product offering, outside of a core range makes real sense to me.
