Go on, wallpaper a door! It’s a pretty simple project. We painted the door navy, then wallpapered the inset panels. Key pointers: For the cleanest cut, trim paper with a crafts knife. Regardless of which type of wallpaper you’re applying (including the peel-and-stick kind), start in a corner. If wallpaper paste is involved, pour into a paint tray and spread on the back of the paper with a roller. De-wrinkle with a wallpaper smoother. Wallpaper: Octavia sisal wallpaper in navy, fschumacher.com for buying info
A little wallpaper goes a long way! Putting a bold pattern on an interior door gives a room major pop.

ECZEMA: UNDER CONTROL. SO ROLL UP THOSE SLEEVES. DUPIXENT is a breakthrough in the treatment of uncontrolled moderate-to-severe eczema (atopic dermatitis). Approved for ages 6 years and up.
Not an actual patient. DUPIXENT helps restore the look and feel of skin. And it’s not a cream or steroid. It’s a biologic that continuously treats eczema over time—even between flare-ups. In a 16-week clinical trial, children (ages 6-11 years) taking DUPIXENT and a topical corticosteroid (TCS) saw:
Clearer Skin
Noticeably Less Itch
30% taking 300 mg every 4 weeks vs 13% on TCS only 39% taking 200 mg every 2 weeks vs 10% on TCS only
54% taking 300 mg every 4 weeks vs 12% on TCS only 61% taking 200 mg every 2 weeks vs 13% on TCS only
Your healthcare provider will tell you how much DUPIXENT to inject and how often. After an initial loading dose of 2 injections: children 33-66 lb take 300 mg every 4 weeks; children 67-132 lb take 200 mg every 2 weeks.

HOW DID YOU DO?
1. C Chaise longue. Also called a chaise lounge, it’s a statement piece in a living area or bedroom that fits one person. Spot it by its elongated seat with a backrest and armrest on one end. Its cousin, the settee, typically has a high back and armrests on both sides (or none) and accommodates two people. 2. A Greek key pattern. The design, also called fret, appeared frequently in friezes in ancient Greek architecture. It’s now featured on textiles like rugs and blankets as the border or an allover pattern. 3. B Ginger jar. They were used to hold and transport spices in ancient China. Thanks to their beautiful chinoiserie patterns, over the years they’ve evolved to be decorative. One looks great on top of a console table or, if the jar is big enough, on the floor. 4. A
Campaign furniture. It’s recognizable by its brass inset pulls and corner hardware on chests, dressers, and nightstands.
5. B
Bone inlay. This design is commonly created with embedded pieces of bone. To get the look on wood furniture without the high price tag, paint it a solid color then stencil a pattern on top with white paint.
6. C

7. A Art by Piet Mondrian. Dutchman Piet Mondrian’s abstract paintings from the 1920s, ’30s, and ’40s continue to inspire fashion and home accessories. Next time you see rectangles and squares filled in with color on a shirt or a set of napkins, you’ll know their inspo! 8. D
Cabriole leg. They can look super traditional on antique tables and desks—but on newer furniture with slimmer silhouettes, they add cool curve appeal.
9. A
Escutcheon. Traced back to a Latin word meaning shield, escutcheon is a little-known term for a couple of things around a house. On a door, it’s the flat metal plate surrounding the keyhole and the handle. In plumbing, it’s the piece of metal that hides the hole in the wall where pipes go. In either case, it helps make fixtures look seamless.
10. B Jasperware. Some find the look of the pottery (which resembles jasper stone) dated—it debuted in the 1770s, after all. Others consider it grandmillennial chic and happily collect the dishware and vases. 11. A A Josef Frank print. A passion for botany inspired the gorgeous textiles
SERVICE DOGS CHANGE LIVES that the multitalented Austrian conceived from the 1920s to the 1940s. They’re a designer go-to for curtains, shades, pillows, and upholstery.
12. A
Maidenhair fern. As appreciated as they are for being one of the prettiest houseplants out there, they’re finicky. If you’re game to try your hand, water frequently and make sure it gets plenty of indirect sunlight.
Thanks to extensive training and unconditional devotion, service dogs are able to help military veterans suffering from PTSD in ways that other therapies cannot. That’s why Dog Chow is continuing our Service Dog Salute program to help support the lives and training of more service dogs — so that all of America’s veterans in need can find canine heroes of their own.
U.S. MARINE VETERAN, DAVID FULLER, AND HIS SERVICE DOG, KATIE
13. D Étagère. This piece (pronounced a-ta-zher and literally meaning shelf in French) is so popular, you may have owned one even if you didn’t know its name. Since it’s backless, it’s less formal than a bookcase—and less suitable for rows of books. Style it with a mix of stacked books and decorative objects like vases, boxes, and small planters.

tree falling on your house isn’t usually a good thing…unless you end up with a dream reno. That’s what happened to Brandi and Cathy Lesesne’s family after tropical storm Irma plowed through Decatur, GA, in 2017, flooding and damaging the lower level of their 1964 split-level home. “We’d been meaning to renovate but never got around to it,” says Brandi. Suddenly they had no choice. The couple worked with designer Gina Sims to infuse their basement with color and take the cute factor from 0 to 100. Says Brandi, “It’s been the bright side of a bad situation.”

family room This area used to be filled out with furniture from the family’s old home. “Taking everything out during the reno made us think about what we put back in,” says Brandi. The worn leather couch: not a keeper. Instead they got a blue velvet number from Article and geometric pillows from West Elm. Painting the brick fireplace blue and hanging orange grass cloth wallpaper above the mantel instantly upgraded the scene.

how bad is it to knock down a wall yourself? Even if you’re a seasoned DIYer, it’s best to involve a pro. “You never know what’s behind a wall,” says Alison Victoria of Windy City Rehab. “There may be electrical, plumbing, or ductwork that you could puncture.” Same goes for half walls that separate a kitchen from a family room. Another good reason to hold off: The wall you want to lose might be load-bearing, meaning it supports the floor or the roof above. A contractor
will check the plans of the house and make small strategic holes in the wall to see what lies inside before picking up a sledgehammer. If you want to experience the HGTV-style demo of your dreams, ask ahead of time if you can help with the teardown.

good question
how bad is it to let your pet hang on your sofa? Don’t beware of dog…hair. Snuggling wins! Take it from Hilary Farr of Love It or List It, a cat and dog lover who lets her pets chill on the couch. “It doesn’t have to be inevitable that when you get up from the sofa, fur will be stuck to your butt or the butt of a guest,” she says. Hilary protects cushions on her white sofa with a white sheet that she washes frequently, which is way easier than constantly brushing away hair, and it also prevents odors and stains. “I wouldn’t put a white sheet on a gray or colored sofa because it would look like a dust sheet,” she says, “but a matching washable throw works!”
NOT SO BAD!
A messy drawer is one of life’s sneakiest time sucks. “The whole point of a junk drawer is being able to quickly grab a tape measure or a shed key, and if it’s overstuffed, you may have to empty half the contents to find what you’re looking for,” says Sabrina Soto, an HGTV designer. The clutter might actually cost you—you could overbuy batteries or stamps because you think you’re out of them when they’re hidden away. Sabrina’s M.O.: Remove everything and place it on the counter, clean the drawer, and edit what you put back in. Bonus points for drawer organizers. “They are key to easily spotting what you need,” says Sabrina.

how bad is it to not want to put your kids’ art on the fridge? No guilt if you’d prefer not to clutter up your fridge. “My kids’ art actually feels more special when I show it off around the house,” says Grace Mitchell of One of a Kind. Her fave finds make it easy to swap masterpieces in and out: hinged 3-D box frames and clip hangers. They work great in a family room, living room, playroom, wherever. To avoid an art pileup, Grace keeps a handful of pieces from each of her four kids per year; everything else is scanned and made into a printed book (she uses Chatbooks). “My children think seeing their art in a book is just the coolest,” she says.

Your hands could take a beating. Roughing up a wood table with a sanding block is likely to rough up your skin, too, and you risk splinters, says Ty Pennington of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. Bypass gloves and you’ll have to dig out dust beneath your fingernails once the job’s done, and who wants to deal with that?! If you have sensitive skin or a cut on your hand, they’re a must for protection. Try lightweight nitrile-coated work gloves, which are thin but have a high puncture resistance.

They wiped out the place’s stuffy, traditional vibes (think dated fixtures and finishes, and lots of cream) with all sorts of mini tweaks, including fresh paint, contemporary cabinet hardware, and new light fixtures. “Those updates kept us going, room by room, while we saved up for a master bathroom makeover,” says Erin. But the truth is, she’s not totally finished, and that’s the way she likes it. “The joy of small changes is that you can keep playing around,” says Erin. “It doesn’t cost much to swap stuff in and out—and you can keep having fun!”

living room Adding texture makes a space more interesting, and Erin layered it on. She traded in the old ceiling fan for a woven pendant and complemented it with a rattan chair (both by Serena & Lily). The tone of the leather sofa picks up on the legs of the plush armchair (both are from West Elm). The supersoft rug is from Boutique Rugs.

dining room Once the red walls were painted over (the new shade is Aloof Gray by Sherwin-Williams), Erin and David were all about decorating with old and modern pieces—a combo that always brings flair. They paired a vintage rug and table with chairs from West Elm and a bar cart by Serena & Lily. Quirky finishing touch: a print from Schoolhouse.

kitchen The Wheelers got theirs to look all new without even changing the room’s footprint. Having the cabinets painted white (Extra White by Sherwin-Williams) and replacing unmemorable knobs with brass ones worked wonders. Although Lucastone Venatino quartz countertops were an investment, they cost a lot less than gutting the space. Leather counter stools from West Elm warm up the white.
exterior How do you make a traditional white house a little edgy? Paint the front door and shutters dark gray (they were green before). The Wheelers used Evening Hush by Behr. “It made the house much more our style,” says Erin.

master bathroom This room saw the largest transformation, complete with new subway tiles installed in a straight herringbone pattern laid at a 90-degree angle on the walls for a cool take on a classic. A wood window frame stained walnut plays off the walnut mirrors over the vanity. There’s fabness on the floor, too: “A vintage rug is a great way to incorporate a little history in a brand-new space,” says Erin.

“the story of my home” Once upon a time, an author in Washington, D.C., found a great place that needed character. Spoiler alert: There’s a happy ending. A mid-century bookcase from Chairish shows off rare books—including a signed first edition of Beloved— and a rotating display of collected objects.

the story of my entry
J
ason Reynolds tells stories for a living—he’s the bestselling author of more than a dozen young adult novels, and also the coauthor of a recent book about racism. It makes sense, then, that when he went searching for a new home in Washington, D.C., in 2018, one with character and history was important to him. “Many places didn’t have stuff like the old moldings and doorknobs I was looking for,” he says. Then he discovered a 1,054-square-foot row house that was the perfect size and layout. Originally built in 1922, it had been completely renovated. “It was pretty much a clean white box, exactly the opposite of what I wanted,” he says. But he liked the idea of putting his spin on it (naturally), centered around the new and vintage art he collects. He teamed up with Annie Elliott, a designer and former art historian. “We brought in bold colors in just the right places,” says Annie, “along with furnishings that look like they’ve been in the family for generations.” And now, everywhere you look, there’s a tale to tell.
That yellow wall: Jason may wear exclusively black—“so much easier!”—but when Annie suggested painting the two-story gray wall an egg-yolk hue (Sun Valley by Benjamin Moore), he was all in. It brings out the paneling. Those framed papers: Hung above the rustic-looking table from Urban Outfitters, a frame holds contents from Jason’s grandmother’s wallet, including her first application for a government job and voter registration card. “The right to vote was still fairly new for Black people,” he says. “You can trace a life history in these papers, and the story of her persistence.”

the story of my living room
A wicker table from Serena & Lily is casual enough for Jason to prop his feet on while he types away.
That sofa: “I’ve always wanted a couch that looked like an old chesterfield,” says Jason, who stalked them for years at antiques fairs before going for this velvet beauty by Article. Those carved wood mirrors: A mismatched vintage pair reminds Jason of the mix of wood and pattern in his childhood home. “My dad and I have been on a lot of antiquing trips,” he says. The poem on the wall: It’s calligraphed on an old door. “My friend Jason Douglas Griffin made it 15 years ago—I wrote the words. It’s about my mother coming home from a hospital after getting treatment for cancer.”
For a similar shade to the one on the bricks, try Wolf Gray by Benjamin Moore.
the story of my exterior The style: “I always wanted to live in a classic row house, not some big fancy building with all that glass,” says Jason. “I’ve spent a lot of time in hotels because of work and didn’t want to live in one.” The simplicity: “What sets this house apart from others on the block is what it doesn’t have—no added porch or awning,” he says. The deep gray color and black trim also help the home look streamlined and modern.
80 HGTV Magazine
the story of my kitchen Those counter stools: It was a tough decision, but Jason and designer Annie ultimately went with this blue quartet by Flash Furniture, bringing brightness. The fridge: Jason initially wanted to swap the stainless steel fridge for a vintage-y one, but Annie convinced him to keep this, as it’s huge and high quality. As he says, “I learned that if it ain’t broke….” The island hooks: Jason added them for his female friends. “Women never want to part with their handbags—or put them on the floor!” he says.

Grass cloth wallpaper by Phillip Jeffries adds texture and warmth.
the story of my bedroom That chandelier: Found on Chairish, its wood beads have a quirky, earthy feel that sync with the room. When lit, it casts a beautiful pattern on the wall and ceiling. The bed: Jason prefers platform beds, like this CB2 one, for sleekness’ sake: “Typical beds take up too much airspace.” The yellow art: It’s by Mexican artist Artemio. When you look closely, you see it’s not empty—a few Spanish words are spelled out in itty-bitty pasta letters. “They roughly translate to, ‘I am thinking of the people I have forgotten,’ ” says Jason.

the story of my hallway That wallpaper: Annie has described the GP & J Baker wallpaper as “old-grannyish floral”—right up Jason’s alley. “My mother made bold choices—my home is basically a modern version of hers,” he says. The guest room: A mod rocking chair and a guitar that Jason has owned for years just so happened to match, a cool personal touch in this room. “A friend found the art on the street, it’s made on a cardboard box that was flattened out,” says Jason. “I like this piece visually but I crossed out ‘Black people’ because I don’t think it’s true.”
The light blue trim (Sheer Romance by Benjamin Moore) coordinates with the print’s petals.

A glass desk with slim legs from West Elm keeps this little room light and airy.
the story of my office That cabinet: The blue metal IKEA cabinet holds a treasure trove: “It has every single manuscript I’ve ever completed, with revision marks from my editor,” says Jason. “We’re old-school.” Those framed jeans: Before Jason became a successful author, he managed a Rag & Bone store in New York City. After repeatedly mending his favorite employee-discount purchase, he gave the jeans a space of honor. Says Jason, “It’s a reminder of how far I’ve come.” HGTV Magazine 85

Sean and Courtney with Ivey, 11
s a real estate agent, Courtney Madden has seen her share of ultramodern kitchens (white on white on white!) and painfully dated ones (pea-soup-green counters!). So when she and her husband, Sean, decided to renovate the overly beige, poorly laid-out kitchen in their 1960s ranch in Greenville, SC, Courtney was determined to get one with a fresh, distinctive look that wouldn’t soon go out of style. Or, as she puts it, “I didn’t want people to come into our kitchen 10 years from now and think it was frozen in time.” After opening up the flow, designer Amanda Louise Campbell went for a balance of traditional elements and retro-fab ones (that floor tile!), creating an irresistibly cheerful dining nook in the process. Altogether the Maddens got a kitchen perfect for today—and tomorrow.
wood cabinets Agreeing to Amanda Louise’s suggestion to stain the new lower cabinets brown (Special Walnut by Minwax) was a leap of faith, says Courtney: “Our instinct was they should match the white uppers.” But, as promised, it brought warmth and made the white elements seem whiter.
When the countertops and cabinets were reconfigured, this sweet little spot was created. In the morning it’s a coffee and breakfast center. Come evening it morphs into a wine and cheese hub. The art is by local artist Glory Day Loflin.
