EDITOR’S LETTER HELLO SPRING!

PHOTOGRAPHY (TOP RIGHT) KRISTINA SOLJO (MIDDLE RIGHT) MICHAEL SINCLAIR/TAVERNE AGENCY ARTWORKBY UNKNOWN ARTIST (BOTTOM RIGHT) ARMELLE HABIB

It’s time to fling open the doors and windows. Spring is well and truly here! And I intend to make the most of the warmer weather and let the outdoors in – especially as we continue to work from home. There are a few things I like to do at home to mark the arrival of a new season. This time of year, I swap my cotton bedsheets for linen, put the woolly throws and cushions away, and out in the garden I love pottering around with some secateurs to snip back the stems of winter and encourage new growth. Speaking of gardening, this issue we’ve created the ultimate garden guide full of expert advice, great buys and inspiration, starting on page 148. Whether you want some new outdoor furniture or to completely overhaul your entertaining space in time for summer, we’ve compiled 50 brilliant ideas for your backyard. Inside the home, I suspect I’m not the only one who will be doing a bit of spring-cleaning. If scrubbing your shower has you wanting to completely renovate the space, check out our feature on easy-clean bathrooms. There are some excellent tips when it comes to material choices and fixture layouts. As for the quick-fix route, the most important thing you can do is seal your grout. Read why on page 128. With warmer weather comes a bounty of fresh produce. If dining out isn’t on the agenda for you this month, why not host lunch at your place? (Observing appropriate social distancing rules, of course.) I highly recommend the springtime feast on page 139. A new take on goats cheese tarts, lamb with mint salsa verde… it really is a delectable menu. The lemon and garlic roast potatoes were a particular hit in my home! I hope the arrival of spring brings you a sense of buoyancy. Though these are strange times we’re living in, there’s nothing like a bit of sunshine to make us feel as though things are going to be alright.

THE DAILY HOME EDIT

TEAM M O S T C L I CK ED : ON T H E WE B With its sleek, dark finishes, this dreamy home whispers quiet luxury. So it’s not hard to see why this space, photographed by Armelle Habib, was our most liked Instagram post this month. We say bravo!

What’s your most memorable HB moment? Harriet: “When I sat down for my first HB production meeting last year, and listened as the team debated the difference between Montauk and Hamptons style, I felt completely out of my depth. I knew nothing about renos, interior styling or the latest Pantone, but when my first big feature landed on the shelves, I knew I’d become a part of something special... and that I’d never walk into a room again without noticing the kitchen finishes or recognising a trending throw!” What’s been your favourite HB story to work on? “This month’s outdoor special (from page 148) was a dream to bring to life and will hopefully ignite the inner green thumb in even the most horticulturally challenged.” What’s your Work From Home routine? “Initially, I told myself I’d treat WFH as though I was in the office. Read: no active wear and setting fixed working hours. My ethos now is simply to get the job done, do it well and go easy on yourself.” And your preferred spot outdoors at home? “Any quiet, sunny nook where I can curl up and read. Preferably with enough space for my sausage dog Toulouse to sit by my side.” What’s your favourite feature in HB and why? “Easily our Creative Collection: it’s an incredible platform for showcasing the best in contemporary Australian talent, and I also love getting a sneaky insight into the space behind the magic.”

HB IS WHERE THE HEART IS “GROWING UP, I USED TO LOVE FLICKING THROUGH ALL SORTS OF MAGAZINES. OVER THE YEARS, MY TASTES HAVE CHANGED INTO HOME AND DESIGN AND I CAN’T RAVE ENOUGH ABOUT HOME BEAUTIFUL. I CAN’T WAIT TO HAVE A BROWSE THROUGH [THE} STYLING INFO.” - @MYPARKVILLEHOME

5 MINUTES WITH: James Walsh

Vertical garden, $258,

MELBOURNE-BASED DESIGNER JAMES WALSH IS THE WINNER OF THIS YEAR’S AUSTRALIAN FURNITURE DESIGN AWARD PRESENTED BY NGV AND STYLECRAFT, SHOWN (ONLINE) AT DENFAIR . What does winning AFDA 2020 mean to you? James: “This competition is one of the largest in Australia and it means a great deal to me to have won; it’s something I’ve aspired to for the past five years. It will have a huge impact on my design career and my professional practice moving into the future.” How did you discover a passion for furniture design? “When I began my studies at RMIT I jumped straight into fine arts. In my first year of university I came across one of the RMIT industrial design graduation shows, and I was inspired by the variety of projects and materials the students were exploring. The following year I studied product design and, from there on, I was hooked.” Who influences you creatively? “Dale Hardiman from Dowel Jones, Andrew Simpson of Vert Design and Ash Allen. These three designers have all been incredibly influential in my design practice and I am lucky to have collaborated and worked with them.” Where do you find inspiration for your products? “For me, inspiration comes from nature: on my walk to work, in a national park, by the beach – anywhere I can get a clear head to think.” What’s next for you? “I’m looking to explore a range for the Anthropic bench and will also be in conversation with Stylecraft in the coming weeks to discuss a potential collaboration for a new project. I’ve also released a range of terracotta vessels as part of Melbourne Design Week, which I’m currently developing with Saint Francis Place, a Melbourne-based beauty and skincare shop.” Visit jameswalsh.studio or follow him on Instagram at @jameswalsh.studio.

Simple elegance

Contemporary, natural and calm: this is what Janine wanted her home to be, and after engaging Penny del Castillo of In Design International to work on her new home’s interior, she achieved just that. The entryway features timber stairs with a slimline brass handrail plus drop pendants by Christopher Boots to set a chic, refined mood.

STATEMENT PIECE THE MAIN LIVING ROOM HAS EIGHT-METRE-HIGH CEILINGS WITH A WALL OF DEKTON IN RADIUM. “THAT’S THE ONE PIECE THAT WHEN PEOPLE COME INTO THE ROOM THEY GO, ‘WOW!’,” SAYS JANINE. IT’S COMPLEMENTED BY BOYD BLUE ‘OLIVER’ SOFAS AND PLUSH ‘SNUGGLE’ PETITE CHAIRS.

ISLAND DREAMING A kitchen island combines pearlescent Sensa in Taj Mahal with a dark Dekton in Sirius benchtop. “I liked the fact it looked like it was floating,” says Janine. “It’s also indestructible.”

Words KATE BARBER

A PLACE OF CALM Janine’s favourite space is her yoga room-slash-office. “The feeling I was going for was serenity, so the colours are quite light,” she says. Behind her Globe West desk and Vivora sitting ball, pale-hued Dekton in Nilium sits atop bespoke timber veneer cupboards. The painting of Janine, a gift from husband Jeff, is of a photo taken at the end of a yoga retreat and reminds her to return to the mat. “It’s sort of my north star,” she explains.

THE ‘GOOD’ ROOM THIS SPACE IS FOR WORK MEETINGS AND RELAXING. “IT’S WHERE YOU HAVE A GLASS OF RED AND SOLVE ALL THE PROBLEMS OF THE WORLD,” SAYS JANINE. A ‘KOOH-I-NOOR’ MIRROR PRESIDES OVER A ‘GENTRY’ SOFA BY PATRICIA URQUIOLA AND A MARK TUCKEY ‘OXO’ COFFEE TABLE.

GRAND ENTRANCE The three-metre-high front door is a slab of Dekton in Radium, which is also used in the living room (below) and main ensuite bathroom (bottom left & bottom right). “It’s a nice piece in the house and for the hallway in particular,” says Janine. The hallway, with dark timber underfoot and simple downlights, leads to the living room with a view of the garden through net curtains.

NEUTRAL PALETTE WHEN JANINE SELECTED MATERIALS FOR HER HOME, SHE FAVOURED CLASSIC ITEMS. “WALLS OR STONE NEED TO BE PART OF THE BACKGROUND,” SHE SAYS. A REAL FLAME FIREPLACE FORMS THE GATHERING POINT FOR THE FAMILY IN THE MAIN LIVING AREA .

BATHING BEAUTY Having a beautiful bath in the main ensuite was imperative. “One of my favourite things to do is sit in the bath and just soak,” says Janine. “I might read a book or put a Netflix show on, or just put candles and music on.” An oval Apaiser ‘Zen’ bath looks stunning against the Dekton in Radium wall.

LIGHT AND BRIGHT This bathroom belongs to Janine’s 12-year-old daughter Tahlia and has been created with her in mind. “I tried to go for light timbers and materials, which suited her personality,” explains Janine. “The other bathrooms are probably a little bit darker because they’re skewed toward young men.” (Janine and Jeff also live with two of their sons named Oliver and Riley.)

LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT HARDWARE CHOICES IN THE ENSUITE STEMMED FROM JANINE FALLING IN LOVE WITH THE SINK . “AS SOON AS I SAW THE SINK , THAT WON ME OVER – AND THEN I LOOKED AT THE WHOLE RANGE AND IT ALL FITTED WITH THE STYLE I WANTED,” SHE SAYS OF THE GESSI ‘316 MECCANICA’ SINK AND TAPWARE FROM ABEY (ABOVE & OPPOSITE).

“IT WAS ALL ABOUT HOW A ROOM FEELS AS MUCH AS WHAT IT LOOKED LIKE” ~ JANINE ALLIS

HIS, HERS AND OURS The ensuite is designed to minimise conflict between Janine and Jeff. “He’s got a side, I’ve got a side, but we share the shower, the bath and the toilet,” says Janine. “I went back to the things that annoyed me, like leaving the toothpaste out. It’s no big deal – but if it’s on his side he can do what he likes.” There is also a dedicated spot for Janine to do her hair and make-up.

HOMES

FORMER GLORY A COUPLE BREATHES NEW LIFE INTO A HERITAGE HOME IN SYDNEY’S EAST, CREATING AN ELEGANT FAMILY ABODE THAT HONOURS THE PAST WHILE EMBRACING THE PRESENT Story SUE WHEELER Styling LISA BURDEN Photography DAVE WHEELER

INTO THE LIGHT When homeowner Sarah first spotted this elegant

home in Sydney’s eastern suburbs, it was gloomy, tired and came with a 1980s-style swimming pool that swallowed the backyard. Yet with vision and a passion for old houses, she could see its potential as a home for herself and her family, which includes husband Neil, children Isobel, 12, and Fred, 11, miniature schnauzer Archie and cat Mini. This radiant conservatory (left) was part of a six-month renovation to restore and return the 1920s home to its pomp. “It’s even more beautiful than I imagined,” says Sarah. “I wanted a modern-style Edwardian conservatory; a space that feels like an outdoor room but allows you to use it all year round.” A recycled timber table, custom made by Original Finish, and Thonet Le Corbusier bentwood chairs offer style sense, and the Hali Uşak rug from Smithmade lends faded loveliness. >

The ‘North’ wall lamp (by Arik Levy for Vibia) from Koda Lighting was a splurge but hits the spot. “We considered ‘louder’ lights such as chandeliers and brass designs,” says Sarah. “We chose this as it’s elegant and doesn’t detract from the ceiling.” >

t feels fitting that you should reach Sarah and Neil’s expansive heritage-listed home in Sydney’s east via 12 stone steps: a grand house deserves a grand entrance. And looking at its enchanting white timber verandahs and shingle facade, it’s no surprise that a step through the front door means a step back in time. “We love old houses and weren’t frightened off by its heritage listing,” says Sarah of her home, built on a historic beachside estate. “However, I dismissed it initially because of the old pool, which took up the whole garden and seemed like a huge problem.” Other stumbling blocks included the dilapidated sunroom at the back, which was so rotten “you could put your fingers through it”, and the facade. “The verandahs had been glassed in,” explains Sarah, “so it looked monolithic and ugly, and inside it was really dark.” While she began to see its potential, Neil took some convincing. “The thing was, it met our criteria in lots of ways,” continues Sarah. “We wanted a ‘proper’ old two-storey house within 10 minutes of the beach – we managed eight! – and we needed more space for the kids, who were eight and 10 at the time. I showed Neil how we could extend it and open it all up and drew him a picture of how it might have looked in the 1920s.” He was sold. After three-and-a-half years in the home, the couple engaged Modify, a start-to-finish construction company, and they expertly delivered the whole renovation from development approval to

interior design. The work included restoring the front and opening the verandahs, knocking down the 1980s extension and building a conservatory (also used for dining) and new kitchen, and extending the side of the house to include a butler’s pantry, laundry and powder room. Upstairs, above the extension, a parents’ retreat and walk-in wardrobe was added, and outside they landscaped the garden and replaced the enormous pool with a smaller one. “We already had a great big hole so we thought we may as well!” laughs Sarah, who, with her family, moved into their dream home in October 2019. The interiors are as graceful as the house itself; a treasure-trove of artworks, family heirlooms and forgotten gems, spied with Sarah’s keen eye for vintage and bought from Vinnies, Ebay and Gumtree. Sarah’s colour palette is classic blue and white, and she has “collected blue and white china ever since I can remember”. The result is a warm, welcoming and characterful home, enhanced by the former lawyer’s own handiwork. “I’m a frustrated creative person,” says Sarah with a smile. “I’ve painted lots of furniture and I make lampshades and cushions. Yes, if you had all the money in the world you could buy smart new pieces of furniture, but it’s actually fun being challenged to get the look you want by repurposing old things you find on Gumtree.” That sounds like a perfect match to this historic home. “The most important thing to us about the house is that it’s old and makes us feel very happy,” says Sarah.

“FOR THE , I WENT WITH GIANNA AND JEREMY FROM MODIFY TO PICK THE EXACT FROM A HUGE SLAB. IT WAS SECTION OF LIKE CHOOSING A PIECE OF ART” ~ SARAH

ARTWORK AMANDA PENROSE HART

The original pine floorboards were well preserved but their orange tone was never going to work with Sarah and Neil’s elegant interiors. The solution? Sand them back and stain them with Feast Watson’s Prooftint in Brown Japan, providing a rich, warm contrast to the Dulux Palace Stone walls throughout. Floors in the newly built areas were stained to match. Visit feastwatson.com.au.

KITCHEN With its fully integrated Fisher & Paykel French-door fridge, Ilve freestanding oven (both from Winning

Appliances) and a ‘secret’ butler’s pantry behind cupboard doors (opposite), Sarah’s kitchen is a delight. “It’s so easy to work in and the joinery is beautiful,” she says. “I’d always imagined having a white kitchen, but I trusted Modify when they suggested Resene’s Periglacial Blue. I’m so glad I did as I love it.” The lush marble benchtops with demi-bullnose edges from WK Natural Stone and Shaker-style cabinetry are a match made in modern heritage heaven, while the aged-brass finish of an Astra Walker ‘Olde English’ tap and Kethy handles complete the look. Interior designer Gianna was happy Sarah loved the brass Rakumba ‘Highline’ pendant. “It’s stunning but refined, which suits this space,” she says. Handmade glazed casa tiles from Onsite Supply + Design and Jardan ‘Brooklyn’ barstools both look simple but special. >

SITTING When the children watch TV in the TV room, Sarah escapes to the sitting room (here & opposite).

The window seat and architraves are among her favourite original features, and the coffee table is a vintage chest she had in her bedroom as a child. “We lived in London when I was young, and when we came home my father brought a container of antiques, including this chest,” says Sarah. “He’d wheel and deal a bit, so I think I got my love of antiques from him.” On the wall and mantelpiece are some much-loved artworks: (from left) untitled pieces by Peter Godwin and Helen Gauchat and ‘Portrait of George Evans’ by Annie Herron. On the wall (opposite), ‘My Country’ by Kudditji Kngwarreye sits above an Ikea ‘Ektorp’ sofa – its colours are echoed in décor including a brass lamp from Coco Republic, cushions from The Lost And Found Department and No Chintz, and an alpaca throw from In Bed. An Indian dhurrie from Perryman Carpets combines Sarah’s favourite colour combo – blue and white. >

MAIN BEDROOM A peaceful palette paired with vintage finds sets the scene in Sarah and Neil’s bedroom. The bed frame and tables, bought from Salvos Stores and Ebay, were upcycled and given a new lease of life by Sarah, and the ‘Tokyo’ lamp is from Bastille and Sons. Adding texture and warmth is a wicker trunk from The Bronte Tram, while Papaya waffle blankets and pinstripe bedlinen from In Bed lend classic charm. A joyful collection of artworks personalise the space: far left on the wall is an untitled piece by Erica Tandori, and the portrait of Neil was painted by daughter Isobel a few years ago. On the bedside table is an untitled landscape by Amanda Penrose Hart and on the windowsill is ‘Solo’ by Little Scapes (others by artists unknown).

BALCONY With its timber balustrade and French doors, the freshly opened central balcony (above) restores elegance and tradition to the first floor. Changing the facade has also transformed the family’s lifestyle. “We gained more space by knocking out the original ‘small rooms’, and it’s introduced more light into the upstairs,” says Sarah. Accessed from the landing and main bedroom, this is the spot to catch winter rays and sit among the treetops. “I love sitting here, reading and having a coffee,” remarks Sarah. The new decking is being left to age gracefully. ENSUITE Subway tiles and Astra Walker ‘Olde English’ tapware bring

modern heritage basics to Neil and Sarah’s bathroom (right) and allow the heroes to shine. CASUAL DINING & LIVING Dubbed the “old dining room” by the family, this multi-tasking space is where the children often sit to eat and is regularly home to a jigsaw puzzle or Sarah’s next sewing project. “The table was my grandmother’s,” says Sarah, “and I can remember her doing her sewing at it.” She found the dining chairs on Ebay and painted them with Annie Sloan chalk paint, using colour inspiration from the window and echoed in the painting by Helen Gauchat. A ‘Milou’ swivel chair from Coco Republic injects contemporary, but complementary interest, and the ‘Pompeii’ vase from Provincial Home Living brings its bobbly personality to the table.

A CLEVER REDESIGN OF THIS HERITAGE HOME RESULTED IN A DYNAMIC AND MODERN SANCTUARY THAT HAS A SENSE OF SPACE AND THE OUTDOORS AT ITS HEART Story KERRYN FISCHER Photography ELSA YOUNG POINT OF VIEW Harnessing the spectacular views of Cape Town’s Table Mountain was a priority when homeowners Victoria and Pete started

renovating their family home. Victoria and her son Joseph hang out in the open-plan kitchen and dining area (above) with views out to the courtyard and mountain. “We spend a lot of time here; it’s where Pete and I catch up at the end of the day while Joseph doodles or builds Lego,” says Victoria. Clean lines and natural materials are key in this space, with a custom-made oak island taking centre stage. The paper pendant above is one of Victoria’s favourite buys, from a local Chinese shop. Above the original Eames LCW chair is a painting that Victoria inherited from her great grandmother.

of the house with the new has been expertly realised thanks to a neutral palette and the introduction of texture and modern materials. Here, Corinthian columns blend seamlessly with the rest of the exterior and interior. The Hans Wegner ‘Wishbone’ chairs against the wall sit below one of Victoria’s most precious paintings, entitled Closer by Rosie Mudge. >

LIVING AREA Once a dark space, divvied up into five

ike many couples with a baby on the way, homeowners Victoria and Pete decided it was time to swap their small, inner-city terraced house for a larger home a little further out. But the house they settled on wasn’t your typical suburban dwelling – it was a stand-alone home nestled in the slopes of Cape Town’s iconic Table Mountain. The couple were drawn to the genteel location and the huge potential the site offered. For architect Victoria, who was expecting their son Joseph (now 8), it was both an exciting and creative time. “I saw it as an opportunity to flex my architectural skills and challenge the conventional ideas of family living,” she recalls. “I knew it would be far easier to push those boundaries in my own home than with a client.” And if it was a project they were after, this one fit the bill. When the couple first bought the 1940s house, more than 10 years ago, it needed all the help it could get. The interior was a warren of dark rooms and passages with no connection to the garden or those incredible views. The garden, situated on a lower terrace, was dominated by a large pool that was always in shade. “Although the original home obeyed all the rules in its orientation north towards the sun, it wasn’t a joy to live in,’ Victoria explains. The first big change was to make the garden level with the house, while ensuring any new additions were in keeping with the home’s heritage-status facade. Victoria’s concept was to create two wings; one would be the original dwelling that faces the street, and the new structure would be built behind it to open onto the garden and make the most of the north-facing sun and vistas. What’s also clever about Victoria’s design, is that she used the two wings to keep living and sleeping areas separate, yet connected. Today, the home is a seamless sequence of spaces with the front wing host to the busy living areas while the back section is where you’ll find the more private, peaceful spaces. “Having the two distinct and separate areas connected via a courtyard garden has upped the lifestyle ratio of our home in the most unexpectedly positive ways,” says Victoria. “We’ve realised that we’re a family of gardeners who love nothing better than pottering as we figure out what will and won’t survive here.” They’ve clearly figured it out, as the central gravel courtyard is an abundant mass of grasses and succulents. Similarly, the courtyard off the main ensuite bathroom provides privacy with its lush, green plantings. “The mere act of walking through the garden to get to our bedrooms, or showering under a giant tree in the courtyard, has heightened the experience of our home exponentially,” says Victoria. Victoria and Pete’s aesthetic is one of simplicity; a combination of natural finishes and a limited palette, which has allowed their home to function as a series of considered neutral spaces, layered with their extensive collection of art, furniture and objects. “There’s nothing overtly prescriptive about this house and that allows for a degree of spontaneity that I love,” says Victoria. “We could move out tomorrow and the canvas could work just as well with a totally different aesthetic.” Sounds like the very definition of good design.

L

rooms and a passage, this space is now open and light. “The living area has green on both sides and that’s a huge attraction for me,” says Victoria. Crisp white walls and Tasmanian oak sprung floors (try ‘Aged Smoked’ flooring from Royal Oak Floors) are a perfect canvas for the couple’s collection of precious things. On either side of the Morso fireplace are two paintings by South African artist Kirsten Sims, entitled Teddy Bear’s Picnic (left) and After The Avalanche (right). Textural pieces, such as the James Mudge timber dining table (get the look with the ‘Orbit’ dining table from The Wood Room), and a trio of terracotta pendant lights by NM Design (see Antonia Throsby terracotta pendant lights from Country & Co. for similar), create contrast with the clean lines in the space. >

“NOT FULLY INHABITING EVERY INCH OF IS A CARDINAL SIN IN OUR HOME” ~ VICTORIA LIVING AREA

“We’re not the kind of people who shop with the intention of furnishing our home in one fell swoop,” says Victoria. “We’re habitual junk shop browsers, always on the prowl for a special piece that catches our eye. Luckily, we’re also very patient as we tend to fall in love with one-off, handmade pieces that are either made to order or require months of saving up.” Noguchi’s iconic coffee table in Black Ash (above), and the black leather ‘Barcelona’ day bed by Mies van der Rohe, are both cases in point. ENTRANCE HALL

Victoria’s use of a timber screen of oak (right) to demarcate the boundary between the entrance and the kitchen is clever. But what makes it genius is how it doubles up as a vertical green planter and links the area to the front and back garden too. “Seeing this vertical forest of green as I walk through the front door every day never fails to lift my spirits,” says Victoria. “It was definitely inspired by the screens and wooden beams that so successfully frame and divide spaces in Japanese architecture.”

KITCHEN

Open-plan living is not without its challenges when it comes to decorating, but Victoria and Pete have successfully created a cohesive interior style. “I specifically chose all-white kitchen cupboards and a Caesarstone ‘Arctic White’ countertop so the floating shelves above would pop,” Victoria explains. Much like the rest of the home, the shelves are filled with favourite pieces of art and precious things that the family want on display. “I love the flexibility of open floating shelves as I tend to move things quite frequently,” adds Victoria. >

KITCHEN A focal point in the kitchen is a low, long

window that was designed to bring natural light onto the counter and the outdoors in. “I wanted to be able to look onto the trees that run down the side of the house,” explains Victoria. The floating shelves above the window are both practical and allow for the easy display of the couple’s art and plenty of crockery from Klomp Ceramics and Wonki Ware.

The family eschewed uniformity when selecting kitchen stools. “Joseph really wanted a primary yellow finish for his stool and when James Mudge, the designer, said he could make one, Pete and I decided to go for our personal preferences too,” says Victoria. “So mine is iroko while Pete’s stool is ash.” (For similar, try the ‘Loft’ bar stool in Oak, from RJ Living. The clever creation of a U-shape courtyard (opposite, top), linking the two sections of the home, is designed to capture the easterly morning sun and mountain views. “The living areas are at the front, on the busier road side, while the bedrooms and bathrooms are at the back, on the quieter mountain side,” explains Victoria. “It’s not just practical from a layout point of view, I’ve also learnt that if you orientate your house correctly, it goes a long way towards creating an energy efficient building too.”

The ensuite wet room bathroom (opposite, bottom) is a simple, utilitarian space with a Victoria + Albert freestanding bath, granite tiled floors, a wall-hung basin by Vitra and a drain on one side for easy cleaning. “During lockdown I would literally throw a bucket of water on the floor after a shower and it was clean,” says Victoria with a laugh. The plinth was built to accommodate the plumbing but is wide enough to store toiletries too. “As it’s all on display, it does force us to keep things minimal.”

Simplicity reigns in the couple’s bedroom with Tasmanian oak parquet floors and whitewashed walls. “We opted for bagged walls in the new section, as I prefer them,” says Victoria. “They’re also cheaper.” The plinth behind the bed is an ideal spot to display treasures. “Our bed is on the floor so that Muji, our very old and short-legged Dachshund, can jump on and off,” says Victoria. “But we prefer being closer to the ground – it’s easier to see the sky from there and the room feels bigger.” >

WALKWAY The connecting glazed walkway can be opened up

on both sides in summer and closed in winter. “I totally expect the plants to take over this space entirely in years to come and I can’t wait to see what that looks like,” says Victoria. “It’s become a year-round space as in winter the sun warms up the brick floor to create a glasshouse environment in which the plants thrive.”

HOMECOMING It was a dream realised when homeowners Melanie and Frank built a beautiful home for themselves, and their children Amelia, Maxsen and Stella, in the Illawarra region, south of Sydney, where they grew up. And they were quick to celebrate. “When we first moved in and all the furniture hadn’t arrived yet, we wanted our friends to come over to have our first drinks in the house,” recalls Melanie. “The stairs weren’t completed properly yet and I remember sitting on fold-out chairs and the trestle table. We were having such a good time.” These days, things are a little more sophisticated in entertaining. In the dining room, a vivid Melanie Macilwain artwork is the calling card to a chic bar cart from Neue Blvd (opposite), while the lounge is the epitome of luxury, with a leather sofa and armchair, both from Globe West, as the ideal landing spot. >

elanie and Frank had always shared a dream of laying down roots where it all began. The idea took shape in 2009 when they lived in their first home, a twobedroom beachside apartment in the Illawarra region of NSW, close to the suburb where they’d both grown up. “We always wanted to come back to where we grew up,” says Melanie. “We were looking around and we found the property and it had a little cottage on it. It was over 100 years old, but the land size was really large, and we always knew we wanted to build. It was that dream to build a beautiful house for our family.” The old cottage served them well for seven years, until they were ready to realise their vision of building a spacious family home customised to perfectly suit their family of five, which now includes Amelia, 12, Maxsen, 11, and Stella, nine. But first came a setback that ended up being one of life’s serendipitous twists. “We knocked our house down, ready to go and then our first builder went into liquidation, so we had a year until we started building again,” says Melanie. And so they enlisted South Coast Building Design, Saltbox Building Co and Sarah Nolen from Birdblack Design, who redesigned the main suite, kids’ bathroom and kitchen. “I was blown away with what she did with the layout and everything because I could never have come up with that on my own,” enthuses Melanie. “So, we were really, really happy that we had that extra time to rethink things and make more of the actual design.” The result is a distinctively modern, four-bedroom, two-storey home, warmed by swathes of rich and tactile timber and elements of the past. “The 100-year old hardwood floorboards from our original house were remilled and put into the kids’ hallway,” says Melanie. “There is a lot of concrete and glass and I didn’t want it to feel cold, so I loved the timber aspect to bring that warm feeling.” In the living room, a caramel-coloured lounge draws the eye, offering a beautiful counterpoint to the concrete floor. “The colour palette of sage green, dusty pink and muted blues made me feel warmer, because concrete can be quite sharp – I wanted to soften that modern feel of the house,” says Melanie, who paints as a hobby. “In the morning, I go downstairs and look out at all the greenery from the kitchen – the beautiful liquid ambers. It’s bringing those different elements of the outside in.” Yet this is a home as functional to live in as it’s beautiful to behold. Avid entertainers, Melanie and Frank have friends over “nearly every week”, which is when their place really shines. “We open those stacker doors and it just makes our living area so much bigger,” she says. For Melanie, seeing the way her home brings joy to her family and friends is the touching fulfilment of a childhood wish. “My dream has always been to have a beautiful house. It sounds weird,” she chuckles. “My sister and I shared a room and it was sort of like, ‘Oh, I wish I had my own room. I wish I had a nice house,’ and I’ve always wanted that for my kids. I’ve always wanted them to have a house to be proud of.”

KITCHEN Reminiscent of an edgy contemporary eatery, the

kitchen, where Melanie enjoys arranging “big, colourful platters”, plays up the wood-and-stone combination to perfection, courtesy of Polytec cabinetry in Sepia Oak paired with Arabescato marble from WK Stone. “I’ve always loved marble,” declares Melanie (below, with Stella). The extractor is encased in the same stone that graces the benchtops, transforming a kitchen essential into a statement. “It’s like a piece of art for me,” says Melanie, who names it as one of her home’s favourite features. “I had friends that would say, ‘Don’t get marble because it marks and it’s hard to keep in pristine condition,’ but it was something that I’ve never, ever regretted.” Pops of black (Reece’s Sussex Scala mixer and Sketch Odd barstools from Globe West) add pizazz, while potted greenery creates a link to the verdant outdoors. >

THE WHITE HOUSE When homeowners Hannah

and Taylor (pictured, opposite, with their daughters, from left, Leni, eight months, Layla, two, and Zahli, four) decided to knock down an existing cottage to make way for a stunning abode of their own on the Mornington Peninsula, white was the order of the day. “Everyone doubted the amount of white in our home, but it was the one thing I was sure of,” says Hannah. The unabashed hue is the star in the kitchen, with cabinetry by Aloha Joinery and a Quantum Quartz benchtop in Michelangelo. A pair of ‘Bell’ pendant lights from Normann Copenhagen adds a curvaceous touch to the streamlined space. “I love our kitchen so much,” says Hannah. “I spent hours with my head in magazines and on Pinterest and Instagram, getting inspiration for our dream kitchen.” >

nder soaring cathedral ceilings, three young children host playful indoor running races. Beautiful European oak flooring, on any given day, becomes a family dance floor, and a resort-like outdoor zone is a favourite spot for treasured quality time. Quite simply, this home was designed with family in mind. “We wanted it to be a kids’ paradise,” says Hannah of the home on Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula she and her husband Taylor created for their family of five, which includes daughters Zahli, four, Layla, two, and baby Leni. After buying the seaside property at auction in what Hannah describes as a “dream location”, the couple knew immediately that a knock-down of the existing residence was needed to achieve their vision of something with plenty of room for their children to grow and play. “We wanted a house that didn’t appear large from the street, and we wanted to make the most of the sloping block,” says Hannah. She and Taylor took on the role of owner-builder and worked with BD Building Design and Beach End Built to bring their ideas for the split-level beachside escape to life. While family was at the heart of each decision the couple made, style was definitely not left behind, with the home exemplifying a relaxed, modern coastal vibe. Vast amounts of white detailing, clean lines and natural light were major features of Hannah’s desired look from the outset, with the sophisticated aesthetic designed to fit effortlessly within its coastal location.

herringbone detail

Timber-panelled cathedral ceilings connect an open-plan kitchen to the dining and living spaces for a feeling of relaxed grandeur, while skylights and floor-to-ceiling windows allow light to permeate the central zone. “I absolutely love cooking and entertaining, and really want this to be a party house full of life and laughter,” says Hannah. “But even without guests, our house is always loud and fun.” Her dedication to using white en masse throughout – not just on interior and exterior walls, but for the joinery, benchtops, lighting and window frames – was called into question by many during the design and build process. She stood firm. “Some of my girlfriends nicknamed it ‘The White House’, and ‘borderline boring’ was how my husband described my taste,” says Hannah with a laugh. But she was confident and won over the doubters as the project took shape. “White works with everything and it definitely doesn’t have to be clinical,” says Hannah. “I think our home demonstrates that really well.” Timber flooring and greenery add warmth to the all-white spaces, while soft furnishings also provide an effective contrast. But it is the personalised touches that add a sense of meaningfulness to this welcoming home. “I love our huge collection of indoor plants, dried flowers collected from friends’ weddings, old wooden platters and so many cushions,” says Hannah. And of course, the three lively children who run about this light and lovely space also ensure a sense of warmth. “We feel that we have created a house which suits our way of life perfectly,” says Hannah.

ENTRY A concrete wall (here & right) spans an impressive five-and-a-half metres and is used to link the home’s various levels. “Although concrete has a bit of an industrial feel, we were always confident that a statement feature like this would still work with our coastal influences,” says Hannah (pictured, with Leni).

Plants play an important role in the décor, adding colour and life to the crisp white background. “I love all the plants in our home, even if Taylor thinks it’s a bit like Jumanji,” jokes Hannah. Of course, every plant needs its own statement plant holder. Use baskets for texture or, for something a little different, try the unique planters from Earth Darlings or even Etsy. LIVING Painted in Dulux White On White, the interior

colour scheme allows natural elements to shine. Cathedral ceilings make the most of the light, while greenery is complemented by a beautiful artwork by Georgie Wilson. Timber also has a strong presence, with a dining setting from Big Chair and a Nick Scali coffee table delivering natural hues. “This is the heart of the home,” says Hannah. “We wanted it to feel big and spacious as there is always a lot going on, from craft and drawing to indoor running races.” >

Earthy tones and textures add up to a calming space for youngest daughter Leni’s nursery. Beautiful timber features are introduced through a dresser from Freedom and an Ikea cot, and the rustic palette is continued through soft furnishings from Sage x Clare. A sweet artwork by Anna Cole is an ideal colour match to painted dado wall panelling. For a similar look, try Diva Rouge by Dulux.

LAUNDRY It was important for Hannah and Taylor to balance

the large-scale use of white by adding smatterings of textural interest. In the laundry, ‘Coogee’ Kit-Kat mosaic tiles in Antique White from National Tiles were laid horizontally to balance the classic simplicity of Shaker-style cabinetry. Gold tapware from ABI further refines the zone. “With three little girls and neverending outfit changes, I spend a disproportionate amount of time in our laundry and decided to make it a little luxe,” says Hannah. >

ELLE LOVELOCK, HOME BEAUTIFUL:

“The proportions and flow of this home really make you go ‘wow’ as soon as you walk in.”

THE PERFECT PACKAGE ‘Bespoke’ and ‘new build’ might not be two words you expect to see in the same sentence, but the grand Hamptons-style home of Robyn, Jonathon and their three children, Jasper, 12, Matilda, nine and Amelie, three (pictured above), will change the way you think of new homes forever. After Robyn fell in love with Hall & Hart Homes’ ‘Elyse’ house design, Home Beautiful came on board to help her create a fresh take on Hamptons style, peppered with breezy bohemian elements. “This was the first house I looked at and loved,” says Robyn of the smart exterior, which is clad in Taubmans Stormy Shadow and Taubmans Cotton Ball.

H2HB REVEAL DINING “My style is relaxed Hamptons with

a beachy, boho vibe,” says Robyn. After Home Beautiful introduced Robyn to Hamptons expert Natalee Bowen of Indah Island, the pair set about sourcing pieces in keeping with Robyn’s casual take on the classic style – such as the shimmering Beacon Lighting ‘Frost’ chandelier above the dining table in lieu of traditional crystal. “Natural textures bring the relaxed boho feel,” says Natalee, who chose the dining table, available from Indah Island, for its lime-washed finish. She teamed it with easy-clean ‘Paris’ rattan dining chairs from Temple & Webster to survive family meals in style. A striped ‘Armani Beige’ rug designed by Natalee for Carnival Homewares anchors the scene and keeps toes toasty for the family, which includes Matilda and Molly the dog (pictured). >

W

hen they snapped up a run-down property in a coveted suburb of Sydney’s North Shore, Robyn and Jonathon had lots of time to dream about what they would do with it – close to a decade, in fact. Working in Singapore and living within the confines of a condo with their three young children, they dreamt of their future family home back in Sydney, picturing days spent lazing by a glittering pool with plenty of space for everyone. “This is the first time my husband and I have actually lived in a house together,” says Robyn. “In Singapore, we always chose condos to save for the dream house in Australia.” Quickly realising that rebuilding their new house would be more cost-effective than attempting a full-scale renovation, Robyn spent years whittling down her options, visiting HomeWorld display home village whenever she returned to Sydney. “We thought our budget would be better spent if we were to spec up a package build rather than spend double on a custom builder and architect,” she says. “But I visited so many companies and all the houses looked the same.” It wasn’t until a friend recommended Hall & Hart Homes that Robyn found what she was after. “They offered the design flexibility I wanted,” she explains. “Which was lucky, because I changed a lot!” Guiding her decisions were the biggest items on her wish list: an open-plan living area that flowed seamlessly outdoors; an expansive kitchen and all bedrooms on one level. “Clients are often surprised that they can move the location of stairs, increase window sizes and change the facade!” says Hall & Hart director Neill Evans. “Robyn and her family heavily customised plans to suit their lifestyle.” With the layout locked in, Robyn invited Home Beautiful to help create a light-filled interior with hints of the Hamptons. “The key to a fresh, unfussy Hamptons-style home is in the colour palette and materials choices,” says Home Beautiful editor-in-chief Elle Lovelock. “Crisp whites, soft greys and materials like linen, marble and washed timber.” Guided by the Home Beautiful team, plantation shutters and sheer white curtains, all supplied by Wynstan, were installed to convey an airy coastal ambience, contrasted with light fixtures by Beacon Lighting to bring a contemporary edge. Home Beautiful matched Robyn with Hamptons expert Natalee Bowen of Indah Island to deftly capture that pared-back look. “Robyn didn’t want anything too formal, so we kept to clean lines and a light palette for a zen-like, calming effect,” explains Natalee. Adds Robyn: “And I needed furniture that would be practical with a three-year-old daughter running around! Natalee chose beautiful, simple pieces that I just love.” With the paint just dry on their nine-month build, Robyn and her family are thrilled with the haven they spent years yearning for. “What I’m most looking forward to is the weather warming up and sitting outside, having a barbecue and watching the kids play in the pool,” says Robyn, looking out the window with a smile. “Being here almost feels like we’re on holidays.”

KITCHEN “This is a great example of a modern, coastal Hamptons

look,” says Natalee of the crisp white kitchen, lined with Polytec ‘Berrilee’ cabinetry in Ultra White Matt (left). “The slight Shaker profile gives it a Hamptons narrative, but the clean lines and handle-free doors make it modern.” A splashback of Dekton ‘Opera’, complete with matching benchtops, lends a luxurious look, while white cane bar stools from Indah Island (above left) bring the beachy feel. “This is where I envisage the kids eating a lot of the time,” says Robyn (with Amelie) of the island bench.

colour palette of soft timber, white and taupe throughout gives the open-plan kitchen and dining area its beautiful sense of flow. Robyn chose Dyna Core laminate flooring in Valley Oak from Accent Carpets to capture the casual ambience of a beach house. Overhead, glass ‘Marcel’ pendants from Beacon Lighting subtly highlight the island bench without distracting from the adjacent dining zone. “I thought of making more of a statement with the lighting above the island, but we realised it would be too much visually,” says Robyn. >

LIVING ROOM An atmosphere of informal luxury permeates the main

living area, thanks in part to a double-sided Real Flame fireplace that gives a glimpse of the formal lounge beyond. “Robyn wanted this room to feel very relaxed, so we used soft colours rather than layering lots of pattern,” says Natalee of a space that features two dive-into Melbourne-made sofas from Molmic. Above the fireplace, a print of Italy’s Amalfi Coast from Oz Design Furniture holds a special place in Robyn and Jonathon’s heart. “It is one of our favourite holiday destinations,” she says. “We chose art with a connection to our story.” A marble-topped coffee table from Indah Island and Lounge Lovers ‘Coco’ sideboard topped with a curvaceous ‘Hayman’ lamp from Oz Design Furniture complete the scene.

Behind, a geometric shelving unit from Indah Island provides a dramatic backdrop and displays cherished family treasures. OPEN-PLAN LIVING One

of the standout features of the Hall & Hart Homes ‘Elyse’ design chosen by Robyn is its open-plan layout (above right) that she found very appealing for her family of five. For interior designer Natalee, the open plan look meant “all the

design elements had to speak to one another in a very cohesive manner.” Taubmans Miss Universe coats the walls throughout to provide a fresh white foundation. “The scheme is very neutral, very soft, light, bright and airy,” Natalee adds. “There’s nothing heavy about it whatsoever.” FORMAL LIVING Robyn had

her heart set on deliciously dark navy sofas for the formal living area (right), an adults-only retreat. “I thought they’d create that luxe, cosy feel by the fireplace,” she says. A duo of ‘Draper’ velvet sofas from Lounge Lovers fits the bill, offset by linen ‘Date Palm’ cushions by Carnival Homewares. Natalee tied the look together with a classic striped ‘Como’ rug she designed for Carnival Homewares. “The soft sage green shade adds another layer of character,” she says. Whitewashed ‘Sasha’ cantilever rattan chairs from Oz Design Furniture introduce a dash of coastal cool. ALFRESCO DETAIL Bi-fold

windows (right) opening from the kitchen ensure the in/out connection Robyn craved, but they weren’t part of the original house design. “Hall & Hart doesn’t

usually offer bi-folds, but they sourced them for me,” says Robyn. “Indoor/outdoor living was the biggest thing I wanted from the house – in summer we’ll get the sense of it being an outdoor room.” POOL “Beyond choosing a great

builder, I think investing in good landscaping was one of the best decisions we made,” says Robyn about Ballast Landscape, who built a cabana out of James Hardie cladding to provide a sunlit spot for sitting by the pool (below & opposite). “Our block was difficult because it sloped in two directions, but the landscaper transformed everything – we just have to wait for our plants to grow!” Ezarri glass mosaic tiles from Europe Imports line the sparkling pool. “I wanted a light aqua look to keep everything bright and fresh,” says Robyn of the self-cleaning pool by Compass Pools.

KITCHENS:

KEEPING CURRENT WE DISSECT THE LATEST TRENDS IN KITCHENS AND SPEAK TO THE EXPERTS ABOUT THE PLUSES (AND MINUSES) OF EACH LOOK Words LAURA BARRY

K

itchens are one of the most expensive renovation projects to undertake in your home, so it’s essential to ensure you invest in a design that will last. While the all-white kitchen makes for a timeless choice (illustrated spectacularly on these two pages), this year has seen it paired with natural elements and bright pops of colour to keep it contemporary. Country and Hamptons-style kitchens are two more examples of classic design styles that are updated every season, while coloured cabinetry, dark timber, marble and brass are all enjoying a moment. So, how do you decide which looks are best for your home? We asked a panel of experts for their advice on the current trends and explore the positives (and a few negatives) for each one.

TRIED, TESTED AND TRUE “An all-white kitchen can create a calming and streamlined ambience in which to work and entertain,” says Grant Vandenberg, general marketing manager with Caesarstone Australia. “It’s practical in that it can overcome some structural shortcomings in the kitchen, such as introducing a sense of light and space into small, dark kitchens, and allowing architectural details to shine.”

DESIGN FILE

PHOTOGRAPHY ANNETTE O’BRIEN

NEEDS WARMING UP “An all-white kitchen can feel sterile if there are no feature colours or texture contrasts to add warmth and visual interest,” says Briony Mikrou, marketing communications manager at Kaboodle Kitchen. “If you’re opting for white, it’s wise to think about what other elements you can introduce to balance the space visually.” >

MAGIC MARBLE A TRUE CLASSIC Known for its luxurious aesthetic, marble can elevate any look in an instant, as seen in this kitchen, at right, by Aaron Wong from Alexander Pollock Interiors. “Marble has been the leading stone used in kitchens for hundreds of years, offering the perfect balance of durability, purity and beauty,” explains Costa Voulgarakis, head of sales and marketing with Euro Marble.

ECO-FRIENDLY Costa says marble (below right) is actually a ‘green’ choice to make. “Marble and natural stone require no chemical processing, which means there are no toxic waste products associated with the construction of a new kitchen, or any emission of harmful gasses,” he explains.

120

HOMEBEAUTIFUL.COM.AU

EXTRA COSTS While marble, illustrated beautifully on this incredible island, left, is easy to care for, there will be an extra costing above installation. “I always recommend marble be sealed properly upon installation by the stone contractor,” says Costa. “This will prevent liquids and other accidental spills from soaking in and being absorbed, causing stains.”

I OCTOBER 2020

PHOTOGRAPHY (THIS PAGE CLOCKWISE FROM TOP LEFT) NICOLE ENGLAND, CLAIRE MCFERRAN/DESIGN JESSICA O’SHEA, FLOTO+WARNER/OTTO/RAVEN & SNOW, ARMELLE HABIB/KATE WALKER DESIGN (OPPOSITE) STEPHANI BUCHMAN/THE DESIGN CO

NEEDS EXTRA CARE Marble is a classic stone that suits any kitchen, be it country, contemporary, Hamptons or otherwise, but it does require extra care. “Due to its porous nature, it is susceptible to scratching, marks and chipping,” explains Costa. “But marble definitely isn’t difficult to maintain at all.” And Costa argues the extra work is worth it. “Marble always has a variety of striations and veining that are unique to each slab [as seen below] – and that’s the beauty of the material,” he says.

MARBLE LOOKS GREAT ANYWHERE “Nothing says luxury like a marble kitchen island,” says Costa. “It’s an ideal feature for the heart of the home, providing both functionality and opulence. And, while the mere addition of marble benchtops is enough to uplift the aesthetics of your kitchen, pairing it with a matching marble splashback rounds off the design.” >

DARK TIMBER ON THE HEAVY SIDE “Dark timber or veneer cabinetry can be quite a heavy design element in a kitchen, so be sure to balance it with softer colours and materials,” says Kaboodle’s Briony Mikrou. “However, dark cabinetry works wonders as an accent feature, as it can elevate any design and add some serious drama to a kitchen.”

PHOTOGRAPHY (THIS PAGE CLOCKWISE FROM TOP LEFT) DEREK SWALWELL/AUSTIN DESIGN ASSOCIATES X 2, MARTIN POLLEY, ELOUISE VAN RIET-GRAY/CAROLINE ANDREWS/GOLDEN SOUL INTERIORS (OPPOSITE) CHRIS WARNES

VERSATILE AND TIMELESS This kitchen, at right, by Fiona Austin, of Austin Design Associates, demonstrates the versatility of dark timber and veneer finishes.“Dark timbers are suited to all manner of interior styles,” says Sacha Leagh-Murray, general manager of sales and marketing at Laminex. “From industrial and urban to opulent and refined, they offer an incredible versatility, which is embraced by designers for the warmth and character it brings to any space.”

WEAR AND TEAR Sometimes porous and absorptive, natural timbers aren’t always suitable for a busy kitchen environment, explains Sacha from Laminex. “In kitchens, where regular cleaning, hygiene, splashing of water and everyday wear and tear are a given, the durability, ease of cleaning, and stain and scratch resistance of laminate is a superior, design-driven and cost-effective option,” she says. But on the plus side: a dark finish, such as the one below, do hide myriad marks.

INSTANT DRAMA “Dark timber flooring adds a sophistication to any space and has a timeless, discerning nature to it,” says Anne Plumb, director and general manager at Royal Oak Flooring. “It offers strong contrast and effectively grounds a room, but the biggest trend right now is the increased use of pattern, such as herringbone or chevron, to add texture and materiality to a pared-back palette.” The dark floor, at right, is a dramatic match to the statement cabinetry.

KEEP IT CLEAN “Dark timber flooring [seen left] is an emerging trend for contemporary kitchens,” says Anne from Royal Oak Flooring. “However, dark floors will show more dust and debris than a lighter timber floor, particularly if the gloss level is higher, so you’ll need to stay on top of the cleaning.” >

COLOURED CABINETRY MAXIMUM IMPACT “There is a real movement towards colour blocking for maximum impact in interior design, and I am really loving it,” says Laminex’s Sacha. “Solid colours [seen right] applied in large singular blocks or tonal layering create a statement. For those who love a neutral palette, but still want to take inspiration from trends, note we are seeing designers embrace natural colours and warmer neutrals in residential interiors.”

EASY UPDATES “Coloured cabinetry is usually favoured for its aesthetic qualities, but it’s also a practical update choice,” says Sacha. “Adding a pop of colour to your inner cabinetry or your draw liner is an easy way to personalise your space.” Here, at right, Horton & Co Design proves the versatility of coloured cabinetry – it pairs perfectly with multiple patterns and textures.

124

HOMEBEAUTIFUL.COM.AU

TRUE LOVE While sticking to your own style is a great safeguard against trends, there is always the chance that you may fall out of love with coloured kitchen cabinetry, says Sacha. “If you are hesitant about colour, try using it sparingly, so it will be less dominating in the space and easier to update later,” she says. This kitchen, left, combines colour with classic white.

CHANGING TRENDS “Trends have a cyclic nature; they come and go,” says Sacha. “The key is to take inspiration from trends to create your personal style. Choose a colour palette that takes elements from a trend you love, yet is a reflection of your own personality, and it will allow you to create a kitchen that you’ll love now and in the future.” The chic kitchen below combines distinct colour with on-trend herringbone flooring.

SHOWSTOPPING APPEAL Coloured cabinetry has been used to great effect in this space, by Richards Stanisich Interior Design and Architecture. The natural vein of the cabinetry provides extra texture with light flooring receding to create the stand-out result. Luxe marble was the natural choice for the splashback in the chic space. >

BOLD BRASS

MULTI-PURPOSE APPEAL Brass can be used for tapware, sinks, handles, knobs, lighting and even rangehoods in kitchens, making it a multi-functional material suitable for a variety of tasks. “The greatest pro with brass is that it creates an immediate, beautiful focal point in any room,” explains Daniela Santilli, bathrooms and kitchens merchandising leader at Reece. “But the best way to use brass is to pair it with a simple colour palette. A black kitchen with brass channels old-world glamour.” The metallic splashback in this kitchen, by Sydney’s Janz Designs, gives the space a dose of pizzazz.

PHOTOGRAPHY (THIS PAGE CLOCKWISE FROM TOP LEFT) LOUISE ROCHE/RACHAEL TURNER/FRONT PORCH PROPERTIES, SHANIA SHEGEDYN, RYAN LINNEGAR/DESIGN MARCH TWICE INTERIORS (OPPOSITE) RYAN LINNEGAR

COLOUR RANGE Brass, seen right, will darken and change colour with age, which could be viewed as a downfall. However, this natural tarnish will create a beautiful patina over time and is actually seen as a coveted design feature in many kitchen schemes. Lacquered options won’t tarnish over time.

LUXE APPEAL Brass (seen in this kitchen below) might come in at a higher costing when compared with chrome finishes, however, it is certainly worth the investment, says Daniela, who views it as a “high-quality” material. “On the whole, brass is often chosen for aesthetic appeal because it adds warmth, looks expensive and is a versatile design choice,” she explains.

EASY CLEANING “Brass is great at warming up a space and is a striking design choice,” offers Daniela. “But it’s also versatile, robust and, being a warmer-toned metal, it’s very easy to clean with soap and water, plus fingerprints and water marks don’t show easily.” Brass accents, right, warm up this neutral kitchen scheme.

AN INVESTMENT “While brass is on the expensive side of things, it has been used in kitchens for centuries, from the 1920s to the 1980s and up to today; this trend just keeps on coming back,” explains Daniela of the metal, used to great effect in this kitchen, at left. “So factor it into your budget as your wow feature and see where you can save elsewhere.”

BATHROOMS:

EASY-CLEAN SPACES IT’S NO GOOD HAVING A BEAUTIFUL BATHROOM IF IT’S A PAIN TO KEEP SPOTLESS. WHETHER DESIGNING FROM SCRATCH OR DOING WEEKEND DIY, HERE’S HOW TO CREATE A ROOM THAT CLEANS LIKE A BREEZE Words VANESSA KEYS

O

f all the rooms in your home, the bathroom gets filthy the fastest. The constant exposure to moisture and steam, leaky lotions, loose locks and splashes means you may feel like you spend more time cleaning the bathroom than enjoying it. “An easy-clean bathroom is essential for having a home that enhances your lifestyle, not detracts from it,” says Coco Tully, interior designer for Cote Interiors. “It’s not all aesthetics either: bathrooms that are difficult to clean often grow fungi like mould and mildew, which can be detrimental to our health.” A good bathroom layout, well-considered surfaces and smart storage – as in this design by KWD – will work wonders to cut your cleaning time, plus save you money by reducing the number of cleaning products you’ll need.

ALL IN THE VANITY As the central place of storage in the bathroom, your vanity plays a vital role in keeping your space clean, which this design by Fiona Austin of Austin Design Associates proves here. “A wall-hung vanity with plenty of storage means you can keep your everyday items stowed and surfaces decluttered, plus it makes the floor below accessible and easy to mop,” says interior designer Coco. Ensuring your vanity is easy to clean extends to the sink and tapware. “Choose a vanity with an integrated basin to reduce gaps where dirt and grime can collect, and opt for wall-mounted tapware, which stops water dripping onto the surface of the tap,” says Franco Parisi, chief operating officer of Parisi. “Try and avoid tapware with intricate ridging, as this creates areas where grime and dirt can build up,” he adds.

EASY-CLEAN COLOURS When choosing hues for your bathroom, consider the surfaces you’re working with. “On the floor, always use a tile with movement or pattern, as this will divert the eye from focusing on dirt or dust,” says interior designer Coco Tully of this trick, seen at left. Coco recommends continuing this tile on the lower half of the wall for easy cleaning, if possible. “Just make sure you choose a grout that’s slightly darker than the tile itself, as the grout will be the first thing that discolours,” she says. For non-tiled walls, opt for light, airy hues such as whites, light browns and taupes, light greens and soft greys – they visually make the space feel fresh and clean, plus help small spaces feel larger. “Look for a stain-resistant bathroom paint that’s specifically designed for wet areas and comes with a built-in mould-inhibitor,” says Romy Nayagam, Dulux brand manager.

ROYAL FLUSH If cleaning the toilet is the chore you dread the most, here’s some great news: today’s toilets now come with so many squeaky-clean features that you might never have to scrub again. “Definitely look for a rimless design – there’s nowhere for germs to hide – plus anti-stain technology,” says Dee Hunter, senior product marketing manager for Kohler. “Touchless flushing is also important – the flush button is the highest contagion point, so a touchless toilet significantly reduces the spread of bacteria.” And don’t stop there: choose a concealed cistern so that the toilet can be wall-hung – as GIA Renovations did in the bathroom below – making it far easier to clean underneath and behind.

SHOWER POWER Interior designer Coco recommends three key elements when creating an easy-clean shower. “Choose larger format tiles to reduce grout lines, a frameless shower screen and a handheld shower,” she says. A handheld shower, such as the one above, means you can easily hose down surfaces without having to handle a heavy bucket, while a frameless screen makes for less grooves to clean. The door mechanism also matters, advises Franco Parisi. “Go for sliding glass shower doors rather than doors that open out,” he says. “This will help prevent water dripping from the glass onto the floor.” It’s also important to choose a shower head that resists mineral build-up. “Look for a silicone spray face that resists corrosion and is easy to wipe clean,” says Dee from Kohler.

QUICK CLEAN WINS On a budget or want to DIY this weekend? “The most effective thing you can do is seal your grout,” says interior designer Coco. “Adding sealant to your existing grout will make it moisture resistant, as well as prevent build-up of bacteria, mould and mildew.” You could also try switching up your cleaning products. “Try using a non-soap or detergent cleaner,” says Christie Wood, design specialist for Beaumont Tiles. “This will help avoid the thin invisible layer that soap-based cleaners attract, which collects unnecessary dirt and grime in your bathroom.”

“SELECT YOUR colours CAREFULLY TO CREATE A SPACE THAT FEELS ULTRA-CLEAN EVEN WHEN IT IS NOT. FLOOR tiles WITH COLOUR VARIATION HELP TO HIDE DIRT AND DUST”

MAKE A SPLASH Tossing up between a freestanding or inset bath? The decision will most likely come down to space, says interior designer Coco Tully, and the ability to clean that soaking spot. “For bathrooms with ample space, freestanding is actually best, as inset baths come with more corners, edges, grout and sealant lines that are harder to clean,” she says. “But for a freestanding tub to work, you’ll need to be able to easily reach between the sides of your bath and the adjacent walls.” For smaller spaces, such as in the layout at left by Fiona Austin from Austin Design Associates, Coco suggests a back-to-wall or back-to-corner freestanding bath – these can also reduce tile and grout lines. Material matters too. “Look for a bath made from Lithocast cast resin, which has a high-gloss finish that’s easy to keep clean,” says Dee Hunter from Kohler.

If tricky grout is getting you down, try epoxy grout, suggests interior designer Coco. “It’s an incredible alternative to regular grout as it’s completely water-resistant, doesn’t stain or discolour, and is super-easy to clean,” she says of the look, pictured right. “I always combine it with natural stone tiles because epoxy grout doesn’t need rough cleaning and potent chemicals that can be damaging to stones like marble.”

EXPERT TIP: EPOXY GROUT

TILE TALK Tiles are revered by bathroom designers for their easy-to-clean properties but some are easier to maintain than others. “My pick is glazed porcelain or glazed ceramic floor tiles,” says Christie from Beumont. “Unlike polished porcelain or natural stone tiles, they have no open pores, which means little to no chance of staining or small places for bacteria to hide.” The size of your tile also makes a difference when cleaning. The bigger the tiles – as specified by Fiona Austin for this bathroom design – the less grout you’ll need between them. “Avoid mosaic or irregular tiles with loads of grout lines in large areas,” says Coco Tully. “If you love this look, use as accents inside a recessed shower niche or above your vanity. A little can go a long way.”

BREAKFAST CLUB WE KNOW THE FIRST MEAL OF THE DAY IS SERIOUS BUSINESS, SO WE CONSULTED AN EXPERT IN THE KITCHEN ON HOW TO PICK THE ESSENTIALS TO HELP MAKE YOUR MORNINGS RUN SMOOTHLY AND DELICIOUSLY Words LAURA BARRY

Breakfast is the time of the day when many of us grab our first cup of coffee, make a soothing brew of tea or rely on the humble toaster to produce a crispy slice of sourdough for our smashed avocado on toast. With this in mind, we spoke to appliances expert Gary Brown, senior brand manager at Harvey Norman, to find out what you need to know before investing in a new kettle, toaster or coffee machine for your home. According to Gary, when buying breakfast essentials, it’s important to be across the latest technological innovations, and decide what features you really need. For example, toasters of the future are set to be driven by smart technology and some high-end models are equipped with the ability to pre-set toasting preferences for colour and crispiness. As kettles are predominantly now used by tea-drinkers, you can buy options with pre-sets for specific types of tea, such as black or green tea, to optimise your brew. “Further innovations include extra-fast boiling times of two minutes or less, and models that can maintain the temperature of boiled water for up to 20 minutes,” says Gary. But coffee machine tech has gone further than that – new machines allow you to program your personal preferences into the machine, so it can make the perfect cup, bean options and all, at the touch of a single button. “Some machines have app capabilities, so you can make a coffee using your phone,” he says. So let’s get started!

A café-quality coffee machine is an essential ingredient in every contemporary kitchen. This one is an ECM benchtop coffee machine.

WARM AND TOASTY Toasters vary wildly in price, starting at $30 for a basic model and skyrocketing up to $1000 for a Smeg by Dolce & Gabbana collaboration. However Harvey Norman’s Gary Brown tells us you can get a reliable, tech-savvy model for around $130. “The difference in pricing reflects the consistency of even toasting and the toaster’s ability to efficiently cope with café-style breads and large quantities,” he says. For particular eaters who have specific toast preferences, Gary recommends investing in a model that offers control over the heat and time the bread spends in the machine. “Some of the more expensive models also have automatic functions that toast to a pre-set preference at the touch of a button, and I recommend a four-slice or extra-large toaster for families or those who prefer Turkish or sourdough bread,” he says. If you plan to keep your appliances on the kitchen bench – as seen on the left – be sure to select an aesthetic that reflects your scheme. A retro Smeg toaster may suit a country kitchen, while stainless steel is best for contemporary spaces.

PUT THE KETTLE ON While most people purchase a kettle and toaster in a set, and look for colourways to match their kitchen, Gary explains that colour options and design-led shapes will cost more. Kettles range in price from $20 to triple figures, but you should be able to nab a pretty kettle with a long shelf life and reliable performance between $100 and $130. “Kettles are now predominantly used by the tea drinkers in the household,” says Gary. “As standard sizing for kettles is between 1.4L and 1.7L across the board, capacity isn’t really an issue.” Ensure the tech in your kettle reflects the way you’ll use it and store it – an electric kettle is best for benchtops, as seen at right. A stovetop design is nostalgic and a chic choice for eclectic interiors.

CAFFEINE FIX Coffee machines range from a couple of hundred dollars up to $4000. “For those who prefer black coffee, you only need a basic machine that uses beans or pods, but doesn’t froth milk,” says Gary. “For the casual flat white or cappuccino drinkers, a mid-range machine that has both coffee and milk-frothing capabilities is best, but serious caffeine connoisseurs that crave control over their beans, pour and milk need a high-end machine.” Coffee machines that use pods are easy to use and clean, while automatic machines allow you to select your own beans without having to do the work yourself. A fully manual machine hands control over to the user entirely. These chic machines are now a centrepiece in many kitchens, as seen at left, so ensure your machine has space to shine by keeping surrounding pieces at a minimum.

GOATS CHEESE, WALNUT & FIG TARTS Makes 8 4 sheets ready-rolled puff pastry, thawed 1 egg, beaten ⅓ cup (80g) fig jam ½ cup (60g) walnuts, finely chopped 3 tsp chopped thyme leaves, plus extra sprig tips for garnish 120g goats cheese (see tip, below) Honey, to drizzle

1. Preheat oven to 200°C. Grease and line 2 oven trays with baking paper. Place 2 sheets of pastry on top of one another. Roll out on a lightly floured surface until it is stuck together, about 28cm square. 2. Use an 11cm round cutter to cut out 4 rounds. Place on one of the prepared trays. Use an 8.5cm round cutter to gently press a border through first layer of pastry, but not all the way through. Brush rounds with egg. Repeat with other 2 sheets of pastry. 3. Spread jam evenly in the small circle of each round. Sprinkle evenly with walnuts, saving some for the top. Sprinkle with chopped thyme. Crumble goats cheese evenly over the top of each, keeping filling within inner circle. Sprinkle with reserved walnuts. 4. Bake for 15-17 minutes, or until puffed and golden. Remove and allow to cool (press down any pastry that has puffed in the centre with the tip of a spoon). Drizzle lightly with honey and sprinkle with extra thyme tips to garnish. Serve.

TIP You can use marinated goats cheese if you prefer a milder flavour.

Allow your outdoor area to grow with you by futureproofing your design plan. “Boost the longevity of your garden by considering how and who will be using the space, and what that could look like in five to 10 years,” says Matt Leacy, director and founder of award-winning Sydney landscaping company Landart.

2

PHOTOGRAPHY FELIX FOREST

REFINED ELEGANCE

Less is more when making a statement in a small space, as seen in this design by Richards Stanisich. “The key is to simplify while still creating that ‘wow’ factor,” says Matt. “Focus on what you want the area to achieve. If it is entertaining, invest in a sophisticated outdoor dining set – or for a plant focus, a striking oversized feature pot.” >

3

OUTSIDE IN

Focus inward and create a stunning outdoor space that seamlessly connects to the rest of the home. “Draw the eye outside with warm, inviting lighting, and blur the boundaries of the garden with a consistency of indoor and outdoor planting,” says Landart’s Matt. Try downlighting to highlight the entertaining area and get a soft, welcoming focus.

4 TILE FILES

Smart underfooting can be just as important for setting the tone of an area as the table placements on top. “Try large porcelain tiles for a durable and versatile flooring option,” says Mark Curtis, design consultant at Secret Gardens. “Many of the ranges on the market offer indoor tiles with a tailored external version for outside with more grip.”

DECKED OUT

The humble lawn (above) need not be dull and uninspiring. It can even add an opulent touch to an overlooked space. “For a smaller, soft blade alternative to the popular Buffalo grass, the Sir Grange Zoysia grass elevates your turf’s aesthetic appeal, adding a luxurious finish to your lawn area,” says Mark.

Gone are the days of high-maintenance decking. Seek natural finishes and go back to basics with rustic, organic timber (above). “The weathered silver-timber look is a huge trend right now,” says Matt. “Not only is it a great low-maintenance solution, because you don’t have to oil it every six months. It also creates a stunning soft, organic feel.”

HIT REFRESH

Lead the way and plan a striking design feature with luxe paved stepping stones (above) that draw the eye to hero pieces while linking your outdoor zones. “Add greenery to bring balance into a more structured courtyard,” says Katrina O’Brien, managing editor of Home Beautiful. “Try adding a vertical garden alongside low-lying shrubs.”

A fresh coat of paint and new fixtures go a long way to making a good impression at the front gate (above). Breathe new life into a tired fence or entrance way with a simple refresh. For a classic exterior, try Natural White paint from Dulux – or to complement a modern aesthetic, opt for cool whites with blue or grey undertones, such as Dulux Casper White.

Make the most of that awkward space and create a cosy retreat. “Hanging chairs are a great way to get a sanctuary in a small space,” says HB’s Katrina. “And the best thing is they can be removed when the space is needed to entertain a crowd.” Bring this look home with a ‘Coco’ hanging chair from Byron Bay Hanging Chairs.

12 LEVEL UP

Gain the illusion of a larger space by using levels to zone the area. “Layering helps to capture the eye and generates interest,” says Grant Smitten, founder of Macedon Ranges Garden Services. “Play with lighting to create dimension and highlight your garden’s hero features.” >

13 GREEN SCREEN

Make your plants work harder for you by using lush climbing foliage as a subtle privacy wall against unsightly boundary lines and fences. “Try tall, textured fruit trees to create a privacy screen against neighbours, and as a natural wind break,” says Ben Shaw, founder of Ben Shaw Permaculture. Passionfruit vines are always a favourite.

14 CROWD FAVOURITES

Marry form and function with a durable outdoor dining set. A non-fixed, lightweight one is always favourable for versatility and longevity, then up the luxe factor with soft, comfy accessories. “The aim of outdoor furniture is that it should accommodate guests to spend longer outside,” says Secret Gardens’ Mark. “Lightweight furniture is becoming an increasingly popular choice for its functionality.”

PRIVATE PROPERTY

Screening walls (below) need not lack inspiration. Push the limits and transform your boundary line into a design feature with a charming pergola or sculptural trellis. “It’s all about exciting the eye and giving this area more architectural detail and consideration,” says Mark. “This way you’re not only disguising the fact that you have reached the end of the property, but you are giving the space a new life.”

SUN BLOCK

From parasols and awnings (above) to pergolas, there’s a plethora of shade solutions to help you dial down the heat. For a touch of the tropics, add free-standing umbrellas (see below) and achieve a resort-inspired feel. For a more permanent, fuss-free fixture, try fabric awnings (Wynstan has a range) as a retractable shade alternative. “Make sure you consider the current architecture of the home so that the design integrates seamlessly with the existing exterior,” says Mark.

Indulge in outdoor entertaining all year round, with weather-durable blinds to enclose the space and create an intimate setting (left). “There is nothing more luxe than eating outdoors in the cooler months as well as spring and summer,” says HB’s Katrina. “In addition to outdoor heating, layer up your outdoor dining space with soft textures and plenty of rugs to nab café style.” Winter-proof your outdoor entertaining area with Luxaflex Roller Blinds.

19 NATURAL CONNECTION

Think outside the box when working with the luxury of a protected outdoor shelter (below left). Blend effortless sophistication and classic good looks through the use of soft, dreamy furnishings. “Always try to continue the look of your inside spaces outdoors, for a strong, cohesive decorating scheme,” remarks Katrina. “However, opt for hardier covers such as those from Sunbrella to make your outdoor cushions last that extra bit longer.”

A retaining wall (below) need not be merely a structural design element. Rather, it can transform your hardworking spaces into a multifunctional seating spot, with the addition of a sleek outdoor bench. “Built-in furniture can be a great way to maximise your space and really define an area,” says Landart’s Matt. Soften the sharp lines of your retaining wall by adding a plush throw and complementary cushions, and you have a welcoming place to pause and unwind.

21 BRIGHT SPARK

Be inspired by your surroundings and let your plant choices lead the way when injecting colour and picking your palette. “We’re seeing a huge demand for perennials such as salvias and agastache, which add a vibrant burst of colour for spring,” says Macedon Ranges Garden Services’ Grant.

22 RAW TALENT

Nothing whispers laid-back luxury like repurposing an existing structure to create a rustic inspired hideaway. “For that organic, rustic style, look at upcycling materials such as railway sleepers or breathing new life into existing foundations,” says Grant. >

23 UNDER THE TUSCAN SUN

There’s something magical about sitting under the leafy vines of a sun-drenched pergola. Reminiscent of a European summer escape, the lush, abundant foliage adds a warm, fresh feel to an outdoor area. “Espalier fruit trees are a great addition to your garden – you can plant up against a fence line,” says Macedon Ranges Garden Services’ Grant. “They are quite productive and are easy to prune and harvest.”

Elevate your storage solutions by reinvigorating your garden shed. Opt for modern colours – try Dulux Domino – that mirror your home’s exterior, for an elegant, fresh finish. “Clad your shed in a material that also echoes your home’s exterior,” says Elle Lovelock, editor-in-chief of Home Beautiful. “Weatherboard is an easy-to-install option that suits many styles.” >

AHEAD OF THE CURVE

Redefine boundaries and structure by playing with shape and form. “Creating curvature throughout the garden is a great way of ensuring cohesion and flow through connecting areas and paths,” says Grant. Commit to the curve with contemporary round tables – try Domayne for a selection – and top the look off with sleek metal finishing, as seen in the stunning example (above) from landscape designer Myles Baldwin for a Luigi Rosselli Architects-designed home.

32 PATCH OF HEAVEN

There’s something instinctual about living off the land and reaping the rewards of an edible garden. However, a vegetable patch isn’t always at the forefront of landscape design. “A veggie patch doesn’t have to be ugly – it can actually be quiet beautiful and a powerful design feature,” says Ben Shaw. “Having a good diversity of plants really boosts the aesthetic, so you are harvesting throughout the year.” This means you aren’t left with an empty garden bed between harvests.

“INSTEAD OF PUTTING A VEGETABLE PATCH AT THE BACK OF THE GARDEN, PEOPLE WANT IT FRONT AND CENTRE. THEY WANT IT TO BE PRACTICAL AND TO BE PROUD OF IT” ~ BEN SHAW, PERMACULTURE GARDENER

Technology need not compete with nature – explore smart garden solutions to do the dirty work for you. “Bluetooth-controlled irrigation is a great money-, power- and water-saving alternative,” says Macedon Garden Range Services’ Grant. “Timers range up to a 24-station timer, allowing you to run different programs for different zones.” Smart irrigation solutions can work in garden beds (above) as well as for lawns.

34 SMART SOIL

When establishing the best foundation for your plants, the secret is in the soil. “Rather than buying a standard bag of soil that’s been taken from a different environment, use the materials around you,” says Ben. “Try a no-dig garden by building up layers that will break down, such as lawn clippings, kitchen scraps and straw.” >

COLOUR POP

TALL ORDER

Bring the inspiration outdoors by injecting a touch of colour to make an easy outside style statement. “Just as it does inside, colour can transform an outdoor room,” says HB’s Katrina. “Use it sparingly on a wall to zone a space, and try unexpected hues for an extra dose of happiness. Just make sure a lighter colour is well maintained.” Steal this vibrant look with Pink Dust from Dulux and pare it back with muted greys. For a more subtle look, try Italian Clay from Dulux.

A diminutive plot size need not limit your green-thumb aspirations. Make up for what you lack in size with a powerful punch of greenery cascading down an empty wall space. “The key to vertical gardens, once you have chosen your plants, is water,” says Macedon Range Garden Services’ Grant. “Generally, as they are in smaller pots, they often dry out quicker. When working with a large outdoor wall space, look into setting up a drip system from the top that will filter down.”

“IT’S ALL ABOUT PLANTING SMARTER FOR BETTER RESULTS. WE NEED TO UNDERSTAND THE REQUIREMENTS OF OUR PLANTS FIRST, RATHER THAN JUST LOOKING FOR A PLACE TO PUT THEM” ~ BEN SHAW, PERMACULTURE GARDENER

WONDER WALL

The sky is the limit in outdoor design, so push the boundaries by injecting greenery into unexpected spaces, for a unique design statement. “A good way to maintain a vertical garden is to remove the pot from its holder and submerge it in a 10-litre bucket, to soak the soil and remove all the air bubbles,” says Grant. Complete this process every five to seven days, depending how much sun your vertical garden receives.

38 FIRST IMPRESSIONS

A garden need not be confined to the rear of the house. Give your visitors a taste of what’s to come with a statement entrance. “If you’re working with a modern frontage, keep the water feature and plants sleek and to scale,” says Secret Gardens’ Mark.

39 IN FULL BLOOM

Thinking sustainably doesn’t mean foregoing a sense of style. One way to do your bit for the planet is to plant consciously for our native bee population. “Bees are accountable for one-third of our food chain,” says Banish’s Lottie. “Something really easy that we could do is to plant purple and white flowers, as these are the bees’ favourite types of flowers.” Limonium perezii sea lavender (seen here) is a very pretty option, not to mention a real favourite of bees.

Nothing says coastal cool like a mid-century-inspired breeze block such as Austral Masonry’s ‘Diamond Breeze’ blocks (below). This chic feature wall is just the solution for turning a privacy screen into a bold design statement. “Breeze blocks offer both function and form,” says HB’s Elle. “They make for wonderful screening and bring that instant ‘Palm Springs cool’ look to any outdoor space.”

PAVE THE WAY

Gaining ground in the outdoor landscaping space, paving is no longer an aesthetic afterthought. “The key is to design well in the first place, to reduce the amount of maintenance,’ says Ben. “A good path and border should suppress weeds.” >

43 ROOM WITH A VIEW

Sweeping natural scenery (such as this one at left) deserves to be admired, so let your backdrop set the scene when working with a generous outlook. “Be inspired by your surroundings with strategic furniture placement,” says HB’s editor-iwwPosition a seating area in front of a great view or lounger in a winter sun trap.”

44 LIGHT MY FIRE

Is there anything better than extending a night of entertaining to a cosy fireside spot? “Fire pits are great because they draw people into the outdoor space all through winter,” says Landart’s Matt. For a stunning trans-seasonal choice, invest in a multifunctional fire pit (such as below) that can be converted into a coffee table in the warmer months, and maximise the most of your entertaining space.

45 GRASS ROOTS

Balance sharp edges and lines with soft ornamental grasses. “Slender in form, ornamental grass creates movement and dimension,” says Secret Gardens’ Mark. “For an evergreen option, go native with hardy varieties like Poa grass or lomandras.”

46 SMOOTH OPERATOR

Put high-performance materials to the test – introduce sleek and robust rendered customised bench seats. “Tough concretes are a popular garden staple for their durability – but for an on-trend variation, try a soft, rounded-edge Marrakesh or Venetian render,” says Matt. >

47 TACTILE TREASURE

Infuse dreamy, gentle fabrics with hardy textiles, and you have a seductive sanctuary beckoning an afternoon of indulgence and calm. “Performance fabrics such as Sunbrella have come a long way in durability and sophistication,” says Secret Gardens’ Mark. “For the ultimate outdoor accessory, look for fabrics with UV- and water-resistant properties.”

48 STAYCATION

It’s hard not to be transported to a sequestered resort cabana, with these lush flowing linens and complementary resort-style wicker seating (opposite page). Bring this look home with filmy drapes that set the scene for an effortless afternoon and choose a soothing palette to offer a casual ambience. “Opt for a neutral colour scheme,’ says Mark. “It transcends many different styles and is your best bet for a cool, classic holiday vibe.”

49 ALL-YEAR RETREAT

For less of a camp-fire aesthetic, a luxe outdoor fireplace can be the key to boosting magnetic appeal. This sophisticated outdoor setting by Aaron Wong of Alexander Pollock interiors (right) is the ultimate in relaxed luxury. “Outdoor fireplaces mean you can entertain alfresco year-round,” says HB’s Elle. “Plus, they create a fabulous architectural focal point around which you can anchor an outdoor furniture setting.”

“YOU CAN HAVE THE MOST AMAZING OUTDOOR SPACE, BUT IF YOU DON’T HAVE THAT CONNECTION AND THAT FLOW TO THE HOME, YOU JUST WON’T USE IT THE WAY YOU SHOULD” ~ MATT LEACY, LANDSCAPE DESIGNER

n the world of auto accessories, there was one item that trumped all others. They came in pairs, were designed to hang from the rear-view mirror and signalled a certain maverick larrikinism on the part of the driver. We’re talking, of course, of fluffy dice, which was all that many of us could afford having scraped together the asking price of a first set of wheels that sat somewhere between second-hand and more lemony than Pledge furniture spray. In and out of fashion so many times that no one really knew whether they were kitsch, cool or a combination of both, they became a fuzzy accent of ownership in countless Datsuns, Holdens and Chevrolets. Yet their origins couldn’t have been more sombre: American pilots in World War II would hang two dice above their instruments displaying the lucky number seven on particularly risky missions (pretty much all of them). These symbols of good fortune then made their way into their cars in peacetime and went global. As a backstory, it’s not quite up there with Jorn Utzon’s Sydney Opera House being inspired by sails on the harbour but it comes close. So ubiquitous were fuzzy dice that in 1993, the journal Accident Analysis & Prevention undertook a study of 1800 participants to determine whether owners of these – let’s face it − testicular accoutrements drove more recklessly or were more prone to “indecent gestures”. The answer was a no but they’re still beloved by both rev-heads with a bent for vintage vehicle restoration and younger blokes (mostly) who believe a modified exhaust combined with a sound-system you hear three suburbs away can make up for a personality. The dice were by no means alone when it came to dangling from the rear view mirror. As delicious as that new car smell can be, the old car version – a combination of fuel fumes and the nine teenage boys of questionable hygiene that were crammed inside – could be rank, which is why you needed to hit up the servo for a scented piece of cardboard shaped like a conifer. Fragrances on offer usually ran from cherry to vanilla but most of us opted for straight up ‘pine’, which carried a delicious top note of disinfectant.

The dashboard too became a canvas for self-expression. Say hello to the hula girl – a plastic Polynesian road warrior complete with grass skirt, lei and ukulele. Standing an inch or so high, she was mounted on a spring that provided the illusion she was shaking it a luau every time you went over a bump or took a corner. For a brief moment in the 1980s, she was replaced by a jiggling Elvis and more recently diminutive anime bobble-headed pets that are so cute as to verge on the demented. But it was the hula girl who will always have our hearts – especially if her home was say a Valiant in Tuscan Sunset. Still on the dash: co-ordinating mats and fluffy dice sets were available. As were what appeared to be a hybrid of mini throws and baby blankets that matched the plush, lush lambswool we stretched across the seats. You could also proclaim your brand loyalty to the world by opting for Holden or Ford versions in the marques’ V8 colours. Because it was crucial to dive into the racing line on the way to the shops for milk. It’s what Brockie would have wanted. It’s clear that the inside of vehicles were not immune to crazes. Some came from the manufacturers themselves – remember Venetian blinds

in the back window. But most came from the car owners themselves in a bid to stand out. By doing what millions of other drivers did. Every decade or so, a new window-borne trend emerges, be it “baby on board” signs or the “my family” stickers. Both of which inevitably spawned joke versions because this is Australia and that’s what we do. But even as we deride some car décor trends, it’s done with affection because someone in our lives – ourselves, a parent, a friend, a colleague or a relative – will never quite be able to look at an unadorned rear-view mirror without thinking “I know exactly what that needs...”
