1 WE’VE GOT HISTORY



Big Stuff 1993 We were co-founded by actor and all around good guy, Andrew Shue.

So dream y 2008 We expanded our network to mobile membership connectivity through SMS with Mobile Commons.

1995 This is what our site looked like. Yikes!

2003 CEO and Chief Old Person, Nancy Lublin, was one of two employees!


2014 We turned 21.

2013 We launched a subsidiary strategy agency, TMI, to show other brands how to kill it like DoSomething.org

Staff Retreat The DoSomething.org staff isn’t a group of people stuck together in an office, tolerating each other for 40 hours a week. We’re a close and creative staff who truly listen and care for one another and for a week each year, that’s what we do. Staff Retreat gives us unlimited access to pick each other’s brains, spawning innovative new ideas for the organization and helping us bond as the family we are. We laugh, we cry, and we come up with ideas for how to make DoSomething.org better.

2014 Summer Interns In the summer, spring, and fall we hire paid interns to come into our office and gain valuable work experience in the not for profit world and help out a ton. This summer we had 25 full-time interns! Our biggest class to date. 4 WE WORK HARD, BUT PLAY HARDER



Kickball Our summers are packed with all sorts of awesome, out-of-office events. One of the best parts of a DoSomething.org summer is our weekly kickball games with other New York City organizations we love. The staff and interns united for a (mostly) friendly game of kickball dressed in our custom matching t-shirts. Win or lose, it’s always a great time. (But to be honest, we always win.)



Spirit Days Being the coolest not-for-profit means we also have to dress the part. This summer, we repped our colleges, celebrated Halloween in June, matched outfits with our office twins, had a battle of the patterns and even created a Pride Rainbow. Look how colorful we are!

Bake Offs Besides young people and social change, something else we take seriously at DoSomething.org is snack-time. We hold bake-offs every week to put our staff and interns’ baking abilities to the test. Some of our favorite themes have been: Secret Family Recipes, Mini Treats, and a good ol’ fashioned Guac Off. If you don’t snag ‘em before lunchtime, you’ll be lucky to even have crumbs. They’re that good.


Scavenger Hunt We love our interns. We love them so much that every summer we spend an entire day sending them all over to NYC. Our staff comes up with over 150 tasks as they visit all of our BFFs - tasks range from writing embarrassing TMIs in the park to doing a flash mob on the sidewalk. It’s pretty intense.

In 2012, we moved from our old office in Union Square to our new shiny one in the Flatiron District. We’ve got a spacious kitchen, an in-office gym, and conference rooms named after superheroes’ lairs (important things go down in the Batcave!). Our wide, open space is perfect for collaboration, sharing ideas, and a good ol’ scooter race Who can’t love working in a place with scooters, a disco ball, pac man, and a popcorn machine?! (Answer: No one.) Whenever anyone launches a new product, campaign, or project, they get to ring our huge gong in the middle of the office and share their accomplishments with the whole team. It’s an awesome way to not only celebrate each other but also make sure we’re totally transparent across teams when there are exciting new things happening. The entire back wall in our office is covered in cork for us to post our accomplishments, inspirations, to share stuff our members do, and an entire section is dedicated to the cool things we’re doing with SMS..

Having an open office space makes total sense for our work style. We’re super collaborative and are always bouncing ideas off of each other which is so easy to do with no walls to get in our way.


6 WE’RE AROUND THE WORLD



Sabbatical After working at DoSomething.org for two years, staff members get a special treat: a 4 week paid sabbatical to volunteer anywhere in the world. New York is pretty sweet, but there are all kinds of awesome places out there for staff members to visit and make an impact. We send them off in hopes that they’ll come back with an incredible volunteer experience under their belt and some inspiring stories to tell.

ALYSHA BOLOGNO

I went to Asunciòn, Paraguay to work with SOMOSGAY. I wanted to go somewhere I’ve never been before, and didn’t know much about. But, it was important for me to go somewhere where I had some connection with a person so I wasn’t completely clueless. SOMOSGAY works on gaining visibility for the LGBT community in an effort to bring equal rights to Paraguay. I helped create a strategy to mobilize their members using Whatsapp. Almost everyone in Paraguay owns a smartphone, and uses Whatsapp as their main communication. They’ll now be able to use my strategy and best practices to send members updates and increase the number of people attending their events.

International Responding to the demand of young people around the world and other organizations passionate about young people, DoSomething.org created an International Affiliate program. The International program is a partner network of organizations across the world that are activating young people around causes they care about. Each DoSomething affiliate program operates as a franchise and runs 3 to 4 country-wide campaigns a year. Together the network offers best practices, . Our current affiliates are in Botswana, Canada, Congo (DRC), Ghana, Indonesia, Kenya, Nigeria and the UK. We expect to be in 10 countries by 2015, so keep an eye out!

7 WE MAKE CAMPAIGNS THAT ARE BIG, LOUD, & EASY



Campaigns Our 2.7 million members tackle campaigns that impact causes ranging from homelessness to the environment. DoSomething.org campaigns are fun and creative ways for young people to serve their communities in a way that doesn’t require an old person, a car, or money. This year we are launching 200 campaigns to give our members more ways to take action for causes they care about. Here’s a glimpse of the awesome stuff young people are doing with our campaigns:

THUMB WARS We sent 79,898 thumb socks last year for members to give to friends and family to fight texting and driving.

PREGNANCY TEXT Talking about teen pregnancy is one of the best ways to prevent it. Over 150k young people started the conversation by impregnating 155,365 of their friend’s phones with text babies.

COMEBACK CLOTHES Our members ran drives in their schools and communities to collect unwanted clothes that would otherwise be trashed and dropped them off at H&M stores around the country to be recycled. 340k pounds of clothes were recycled!


TEENS FOR JEANS Members have collected 4.3 million pairs of jeans since 2007 for teens experiencing homelessness.

BULLY TEXT Dealing with bullies can be tough, but with Bully Text member were able to educate their friends about bystander intervention. 292,506 members played The Bully Text.

PB&JAM SLAM Members collected and donated (lots!) of peanut butter. Packed with protein, long-lasting, and positively delish, PB is a hit with food banks. 79,430 food itens were donated.

MIND ON MY MONEY This campaign gave our members a fun and relevant way to teach their friends about personal finance. 42,357 members participated and 2,773 schools got involved.


8 WE’RE HERE FOR TEENS



Crisis Text Line It all started with a heart wrenching text and a simple idea. After DoSomething received a text reading “He won’t stop raping me. He told me not to tell anyone. Its my dad. r u there?,” CEO Nancy Lubin realized the need and lifesaving potential of a texting hotline - and in August 2013, CTL was born. Now Crisis Text Line (CTL) has evolved into a revolutionary initiative and in its first year, reached all 50 states. Crisis Text Line serves young people in any type of crisis, providing them access to free, 24/7, emotional support and information they need via the medium they already use and trust: text.

HOW IT WORKS Volunteer counselors use our web-based platform to answer text messages from young people (13-25) reaching out to CTL for help. We provide emotional support to young people who are dealing with a wide range of issues– bullying, self harm, suicidal thoughts, and more. A live, trained specialist receives the text and responds quickly. The specialist helps the teen stay safe and healthy with effective, secure counseling and referrals through text message using CTL’s platform.

TMI Here at DoSomething.org, we know young people. In 2013, we launched TMI – the first strategy agency that focuses exclusively on helping clients activate young people and create social impact. After all, over 21 years DoSomething.org has become a leader in tech, millennials, and impact. For-profit companies and other not-for-profits have begged us to share our data and insights about how young people think, how to use tech to reach them, and how to motivate them to take action for causes they care about. Now we do just that--for a good cause. One hundred percent of TMI’s profits go back to DoSomething.org to fuel its awesomeness.

They’re diverse, and I don’t just mean in terms of race. They’re not a monolith. They have a huge variety of opinions, attitudes, and ways of using technology.

Millennials aren’t willing to wait around for “their turn.” They’re making change happen right now. There’s no such thing as too young or too inexperienced. When young people are inspired to take action, they do it.

There’s a whole new category of celebs that appeal to young people. You think teenagers love Brad Pitt? Not anymore! They much prefer Ryan Beatty or iJustine.

Millennials don’t want to be slacktivists. They will do more than just click a button if you give them creative ways to make true impact.

Despite all of their social sharing, millennials care a lot about privacy.


10 WE KNOW ALL THE COOL PEOPLE



Corporate Partners Our corporate partners don’t just pay us to do good stuff. They do it with us. We genuinely love and appreciate these folks. Together, we’re scaling up to make sure we’re staying true to our motto: any cause, anytime, anywhere.

Together, we’re connecting young people with older adults. With help from Meals on Wheels, our Love Letters campaign sent over 251,262 handmade cards to seniors nationwide.

Texting and driving kills. So we called Sprint to do something about it. They picked up our call and together we launched Thumb Wars, a quirky campaign that makes it easy for young people to talk to each other the dangers of texting and driving.

Our fav airlines gets us where we need to go (plus entertains us with our own PSAs) - what could be better?

We team up to collect jeans for homeless youth, clothing half of all youth experience homelessness in the country.

A long term partner, we’ve done it all together from supporting young social entrepreneurs to connecting young people with local veterans.

We’ve teamed up with H&M to help young people recycle clothes. See you later, landfills!

Thanks to our friends at Google, we’re sharing our data learnings and opening our platform to user generated content. Stay tuned...

Together, we’re creating a movement of financially savvy young people by asking: what’s the craziest thing you’ve done to save money? (But really...we want to know!)

Innovation is at the heart of DoSomething. It’s no surprise that we’d team up with one of the most innovative companies to allow members to give us their campaign ideas. Toyota helped us bring 7 member-created campaigns to life - a first for our org.


Our Awesome Board They’re sort of like owners, but instead of cutting up the profits (there are none), they give us advice, support, money, and their first-born child. We meet as a group at least four times a year. And we email, call, and Facebook with them in between meetings. LARRY BERG
