HOW CAN NONPROFITS & INDIVIDUALS SUPPORT THE CITYY WITH SHELTERING MIGRANT ARRIVALS?

reach out to us via email at donations@denvergov.org if you’re able to help.

Temporary Shelter

The City and County of Denver is seeking temporary shelter for our migrant arrivals while they wait for their transportation to their final destination or while they determine where that final destination will be.

Ideal space:

• Any sized space with a shower, bathroom, kitchen, fire alarm and sprinklers

Migrants and asylum seekers have been arriving to Denver from the U.S. southwest border and other cities across the country for several months now, but the numbers have we were seeing increased rapidly as of January 4th 2023,a week ago and continue to stay consistent. While the city continues to navigate the sheltering crisis in our community, we are in great need of our community’s support to ensure we can continue to help migrants assimilate into the country with the best possible outcomes. Some of our immediate needs include emergency shelter space, public volunteer support for donation sites, volunteers for shelter and reception sites, philanthropic giving for the influx of migrants coming here from mainly Latin American countries. We are seeing primarily young men, but we also have women, children, and families present within our shelter system. Most of the children are under age 10. The majority speak Spanish. These individuals are traveling for various reasons. Some are seeking work opportunities, while others are fleeing all forms of persecution, political unrest, violence, and other humanitarianrelated crises. Not all the migrants/asylum seekers who arrive will remain in Denver/Colorado. Several will move on to other final destinations, however, there will be a percentage that will make Denver/Colorado their permanent new home.

We are calling on our non-profit community to help us out with our most immediate needs. Please see the below categories and

• Ideally, have cots, blankets, pillows, sheets, hygiene kits, PPE, but the City can provide as available.

• Optimally, you provide the volunteers, especially bilingual in Spanish, to be with the migrants through their transition. The City is ramping up its own volunteer base and may assist.

• A few volunteers will need to stay overnight with the migrants.

• Ideally food is provided by the organization, but the City and community partners can help as well.

• If you can host from even a few days to a few months, the City is grateful.

The City and County of Denver needs medical and non-medical volunteers to help staff our emergency migrant shelters. All volun(Continued on page 19) teers must pass a background check to be eligible. To volunteer at shelter sites, please visit: https:// covolunteers.state.co.us/.

2023 Outlook

As we settle into the new year, the D-ONE Team will be looking to:

1. Increase the number of nonprofits doing business with the city

2. Secure non-city funding to deepen and broaden the work of the office

3. Continue to raise awareness of the work and impact of the office

4. Establish D-ONE as a valuable contributor in the growth and sustainability of Denver’s nonprofit ecosystem, and

5. Further explore and implement additional ways to have greater impact with our Energy Efficiency Program

As we pursue these desired outcomes, we will continue to utilize our CURATE | CONVENE | CAPACITY BUILDING MODEL where we curate information and reports for the “do-it -yourselfers, we convene folks and to collaborate and explore solutions to challenges our nonprofits face, and we invest in the capacity building of nonprofits to strengthen their ability to deliver mission.
