URBAN unveils the City and its secrets
Conceived and promoted by dotART, Trieste’s cultural association that works within the field of photography and visual arts, the photo contest URBAN Photo Awards, now in its 11th edition, presents itself in the year 2020 as an international window for professional and amateur photographers. URBAN’s philosophy has always aimed to praising the quality and talent of these photographers to which it offers an international platform in order to give them the opportunity to be known through: the international URBAN Photo Awards contest, the editorial project URBAN unveils the City and its secrets along with dozens of photographic exhibitions around the world (Berlin, Budapest, Krakow, Milan, only to mention a few cities). It’s an initiative that since the beginning has continued to register new records of participants. In the year 2020 alone, more than 10.000 photos are in competition, 390 projects and 160 books, with more than 2.700 participants from all over the world. URBAN is mainly street photography, the art form which recounts everyday life and its infinite facets. Visual moments that sometimes reveal more than what they would usually show: unknown aspects of society, life stories, hidden angles within urban spaces, contrasts and contradictions, celebration of the beauty or descriptions of the urban decay. Street photography is timing, anticipation, sixth-sense, sensibility or it’s simply waiting for that specific instant in which one will compose the shot which will return that fleeting fragment of everyday life, captured and
4
transformed into a unique instant without end. Small stories from daily lives condensed in a split second can sometimes describe an entire historical time-period. Shots of deep pathos, sometimes may seem mundane yet rich of points in reflections, magic tricks of lights and colours, unexpected dreamlike situations that were almost planned to be presented to a spectator, socially intended or just to be narrated, images similar to a small lookout to parallel worlds that reveal and allow themselves to be captured in that single and unrepeatable click. URBAN Photo Awards is composed by two sections “Themed Photos” and “Projects & Portfolios”. The first section focuses mainly on street photography, a distinctive trait of the contest since the first edition; the second section which is free-themed, allows the photographer to present images that share a common trait (projects, photo-reportage), true “stories” narrated by their photographs. The photos that participated in the URBAN Photo Awards 2020, 11th edition, have been reviewed and selected by a jury of excellence guided by Alex Webb, famous American photographer who’s a member of the Magnum Photos agency since 1979. Alex Webb and his wife Rebecca Norris Webb have chosen the winners of URBAN 2020, announced at the international festival of urban photography, Trieste Photo Days, in October 2020. URBAN unveils the City and its secrets, vol.06 collects a selection of classified at the URBAN Photo Awards 2020 contest, divided and narrated in the following categories: People, Spaces, Creative, Streets. Authentic and immediate images, brought together by an element at times explicit or at times barely indicated, all together offer to the “reader” an organic collage of the City and its secrets.

URBAN unveils the City and its secrets, vol.06 raccoglie dunque una selezione di immagini classificate al concorso URBAN Photo Awards 2020 suddivise e narrate nelle categorie People, Spaces, Creative, Streets.
