Blue Lotus Harvest

Co-Impact Sourcing Story

On a mission to source the only pure Blue Lotus essential oil in the world, dōTERRA engaged in a Co-Impact Sourcing arrangement with the local people in Guangzhou, Guangdong Province, China.

Blue Lotus grows wild in Guangzhou, but cultivation ponds were established to allow for a dependable crop and sustainable harvest. Caring for the plant is labour intensive with men and women farmers working in waist-high water to reach the Blue Lotus blooms, which usually appear after about three to four months of growing in the pond. Harvest season for the desirable Blue Lotus flower takes place between March and November. When it’s time to harvest, the farmers bring floating baskets with them into the ponds to collect the flower blooms.

Harvesters can usually collect up to 220 lbs. (100 kg) of flowers per day and are paid by weight.

Impacting Lives

Many people in the small community of Guangzhou, must leave to find work in more urban areas, so bringing blue lotus cultivation ponds to the area has brought sustainable employment opportunities to the region. People can stay with their families and do meaningful work and be paid fair, on time payments for their labour.

SOLVENT

dōTERRA has invested in their community and given jobs to local farmers. It is beautiful to watch something so beautiful emerge from the muck of the earth. It is amazing that something rooted in the mud can produce such a stunning blossom and become such a blessing for so many people.

Fun Fact

Also known as Egyptian Lotus or Blue Water Lily, the blue lotus is known for its mysterious, mystical qualities and blue lotus flowers are known for their ability to induce lucid dreaming. Rosalina Harvest

Co-Impact Sourcing Story

Australia’s Rosalina essential oil differs from Rosalina oils found elsewhere in the world. With notes of both tea tree and lavender and a similar combined therapeutic value, the unique chemical composition of this essential oil has earned it the alternative naming of ‘lavender tea tree’.

Sustainably sourced from the native Australian Swamp Paperbark tree that also grows on Australia’s mainland, the essential oil extracted from the unique environment of Flinders Island, off the coast of northern Tasmania has a little something special.

This invigorating essential oil has a more lemony, crisp aroma that is distinctively native and reflects the coastal environment of Tasmania’s Bass Strait where it naturally flourishes in the wild.

Works well with:

Australia

Flinders Island

Tasmania

Fun Fact

Also known as ‘Lavender Tea Tree’, Rosalina essential oil has very pleasant aromatic notes of both tea tree and lavender and is a unique combination of both oils’ therapeutic values – the relaxing, soothing properties of lavender and the anti-bacterial, cleansing properties of tea tree.

Tips for how to use Rosalina essential oil:

• Start your day with the distinct and refreshing lemony aroma.

• Try diffusing three to four drops in the diffuser. Blends well with Bergamot and Lavender essential oils.

Helichrysum Harvest

Co-Impact Sourcing Story

A mountain wildflower, Helichrysum blossoms are precious. It takes about 4.5 pounds (2.1 kg) of Helichrysum flowers to produce 5mL of Helichrysum essential oil.

Helichrysum essential oil is primarily sourced from rural farms in Albania. By sourcing Helichrysum from this region, dōTERRA supports ethical sourcing practices that offer farmers in remote areas the chance at a stable income from harvesting their Helichrysum crops.

For some small-scale farmers in rural regions of Albania, Helichrysum alone is their only source of income for the year. So, the fact that dōTERRA is able to provide fair, market value prices for their crops ensures they can continue their farming practices into the future and helps their small communities thrive.

Fun Fact

Helichrysum gets its name from the Greek word helios, which means sun, and chrysos, which means gold. This description refers to the beautiful golden colour of the flowers.

Tips for how to use

Helichrysum essential oil:

• Best known for its topical properties

• Used in skin care products for its benefits to the skin.

• Apply topically to help the appearance of skin.

Why would I choose certain oils for a blend?

When creating a blend, you are creating unique chemistry.

Choose oils that provide the desired benefits based on their composition. In addition, balance the oils according to top (crown), middle (heart) and base (root) notes to create a rounded, pleasing aroma. Blending with particular oils means you can harness the power of those specific plants, making personal fragrances to suit your individual mood, needs and preferences.

To create the perfect aromatic profile for your personal fragrances, include a strong and earthy root or base note, a grounding floral heart or middle note and a bright citrus crown or top note.

The exquisite floral aromas in our Mother’s Day Collection may become the heart and soul of your blends. Just carefully remove the cap on any Touch versions of our essential oils and add small amounts to your blends.

Looking for ideas on what essential oils would be perfect to add for that earthy and long-lasting root note? Try these: Vetiver, Sandalwood, Cedarwood essential oil.

What about the perfect crowning top note? Try these: Wild Orange, Bergamot, Grapefruit essential oil.

with
layering
scents

Florals add the perfect heart notes to your blends. Hints of floral notes can provide restoring, clarifying, calming, uplifting and soothing benefits, depending on the flower chosen.

Herbs and grasses can add a lovely middle or heart note to your blends and their wide variety means they also offer the most diverse range of benefits.

Citrus essential oils are best used to add a bright and uplifting top or crowning note to your blends and personal aromas.

Wood essential oils are typically used in blends as a base or root note because of their stabilising and soothing benefits. Unique wood oils such as Siberian or Douglas Fir can be used as top and middle notes with restorative properties.

Mint oils are known for their energising properties and can be used to awaken your senses as a revitalising extra addition to any blend.

Spice essential oils act as rich middle (heart) and top (crown) notes and they often have restorative benefits. As spice oils can often irritate the skin, it is recommended they are mixed with a carrier oil (such as Fractionated Coconut Oil) for blends that are to be applied topically.

by plant type
blending

Oils can be used neat (right out of the bottle undiluted), or diluted with a carrier oil.

Diluting essential oils does not diminish their power, but it can help protect against skin irritations.

Carrier oils tend to be fatty oils like coconut, almond, grape seed, jojoba, or other oils that nourish the skin while simultaneously keeping the skin safe and retaining the benefits of the essential oil.

As you consider the purpose of your blend, think about whether you might keep it neat or dilute it in a carrier oil. Diffuser blends are great neat. Topical oils are great diluted. Pay attention to the oils going into your blend and if you have any that could be irritating to the skin. If you plan to use it topically, dilution is recommended.

Why does your blend smell different on you than on someone else?

Your genes are unique! Each person processes and relates to essential oils differently, depending on their genetic makeup.

Your previous experience with a aroma is different from another person’s. Previous experience, along with personal likes and dislikes, play a large role in how something smells to you.

Feeling tired? Hungry? Have a congested nose? Transient states such as these can change how we react to a blend.

You can experiment with your blends by trying them on different people (with their permission!) and seeing how they may perceive the aroma differently.

neat vs dilution

1. Plan your purpose.

What do you want your blend to do? Consider the individual oils you would like to use in your blend, and look specifically for oils that may offer the benefits you desire. Since there tends to be some overlap in benefits for single oils, you can choose your benefits and then refine your choices for the aroma you’d like.

2. Determine how your blend will be used.

All essential oils can be diffused aromatically. Many essential oils can be used topically to create a personal aroma on the skin and affect mood and wellbeing. When you determine how your oil blend will be used, this can give you additional direction regarding which oils would be most appropriate.

3. Decide on an aromatic profile and select oils. Don’t forget to look at the essential oil plant categories and top, middle and base notes as you settle on an aromatic profile for your blend. As you get started, it’s helpful to pick one or two plant categories from which to draw oils in order to keep your blend from smelling muddled. Now select oils. Try to have at least one top note, one heart note, and one base note for the best balance.

4. Try and try again

Once you’ve planned your blend’s benefits, usage, and aroma, it’s time to start blending! Mix together your chosen oils and then make changes based on the outcome. Here are some starting points:

• Try starting with equal parts of each oil and adjusting based on what ‘sticks out’.

• Try starting with your favourite oil as the highest ingredient.

• As you gain experience, you’ll know to keep more dominant oils in lower amounts.

Why

the science of blending

5. Experiment

Does your blend behave as you would like it to? Try it out and see if the aroma and benefits turned out as you planned. It’s helpful to get feedback from a variety of people and see how your blend is received.

6. Revisit and adjust if necessary.

Blends are seldom perfect on the first try. Keep iterating again and again until you feel like the blend is just right. Be sure to keep careful notes and label bottles so you can compare multiple iterations against each other. Over time, you’ll start to see trends and get a better feel for what works and what you like. If you’re doing a topical product specifically, try iterations including the carrier oil because this will change the aroma profile.
