“We create monsters!” “But useful ones for truly heavy demolition and recycling purposes”. Trevi Benne is a devoted and specialiced manufacturer of demolition and recycling equipment for excavators from 50 to 150 t. The international demolition and recycling industries has during the last years seen a clear change towards bigger and heavier attachments for more powerful and effcient handling. Trevi Benne has during the last five years developed a strong production method to meet these needs delivering crushers, pulverisers and scrap shear from 5 to 12 tons to user all over the world.
HC 100: 11.000 kg primary demolition with 2,000 mm jaw opening.
Hydraulic Jaws HC Series The HC primary hydraulic jaws was created for the most delicate and precise demolitions, permits the operator to move with agility in the destruction of reinforced cement structures and in the removal of materials even of a considerable height; at the same time, the profile of the claws, piloted by a double cylinder and equipped with shears for cutting iron and a reinforced concrete rod inside the framework, allows for operating without any problems, even when the structures in are strongly hard. Just three key words to define the major strong points of the HC Series: powerful, because it is equipped with cylinders that guarantee exceptional gripping power in a short time; compact, because it was designed for delicate demolitions characterized by very tight moving spaces, where it is fundamental to guarantee an optimal visibility for the operator, and therefore absolute safety; fast, because it is equipped with continuous hydraulic rotation that greatly reduces the necessity for maneuvers, and therefore reduces the time needed to move the machine. Rotating Hydraulic Pulverizer FR Series The possibility to execute the two distinct phases of demolition (primary and secondary) with only one machine is the dream of every professional working in this sector: to be able to utilize a single excavator, without having to substitute the equipment, guarantees important economic advantages and noticeably reduces the demolition time. This is the difficult problem that was resolved by Trevi Benne, with the FR Series rotating hydraulic pulverizer, a hybrid product that allows the operator to tackle both phases of demolition with one machine, thanks to its unique characteristics. The continuous hydraulic rotation allows for perfect jaws functioning, thanks to the possibility of reducing movements to a minimum, and therefore working with a high level of precision; the ample configuration of the jaws used on
this model, typical of standard demolition model, and the presence of two inter-changeable and reversible blades for iron cutting in the framework, permit the FR Series to operate as a crusher with the same efficiency. Marilyn Hydraulic Shears CS Series Designed for modern industrial demolition sites that require significant cutting strength at considerable heights and for scrap metal and iron or similar material recycling professionals. Structural and aesthetic improvements have been introduced in the latest versions, seeking to offer an increasingly reliable piece of equipment that caters for the needs of the client/user. In order to help cutting the material at the top, the shape of the interchangeable tip blade has been amended, the dimensions of the guide blade have been increased, the cylinder has been installed in a backward position so as to provide total protection for the shaft and protection has been created for the blade screw holes so as to prevent wear. The design of the mouth and the positioning of the blades make it possible to obtain linear, clean cuts in the scrap metal, meaning that loading operations can be simplified and thus reducing handling and transport costs. For further technical info about demolition, recycling and earthmoving attachments go to www.trevibenne.it.
Trevi Benne has proved itselves as the no one international supplier of real monster jaws, over sized hydraulic demolition and recycling attachments for really heavy duty task. The picture to the right is showing one of the latest innovations, the 20 ton heavy rotating pulverizer FR200, together with some of its inventors at Trevi Benne.

During 2007 Trevi Benne launched five new models which were HC 50, HC 80, HC 120 and FC 180 reaching up to 5 tons in weight. The fifth novelty were the impressive FR 200 which is a rotating pulverizer weighing more than 20 tons. “Our profiling towards really heavy duty attachments has taken shape during the last five years. And our investment in serving the world’s absolutely biggest demolition contractors in terms of machinery has paid off. We have, with a close relation with our clients, been able to develop and provide our clients with the type of equipment that make their work more efficient, more cost effective and more competitive”, says Trevi Benne Marketing Manager Christian Tadiotto. The huge FR 200 weighs a bit more then 20.5 t and has a jaw opening of 2 m. The height of the attachments is over 4.5 m. It is equipped with two cylinders placed side by side that has a force of 350 t at the tip of the attachment. The first unit was delivered to a Spanish contractor to be used on a Liebherr 974. Same company has also acquired attachments like FR 70ND and FR 100N. Trevi Benne will be exhibiting at the Italian show Samoter in Verona and the US show CONEXPO-CON/AGG in Las Vegas.

Fintec 1440 to make US debut at ConExpo
Above some pictures from CONEXPOCON/AGG in 2005.
ConExpo will be the first worldwide show attended by Fintec Crushers and Screens Ltd since it became part of Sandvik. The company will celebrate the event with the US launch of the Fintec 1440 track-mounted impact crusher. The 1440 combines Fintec’s experience in the design of mobile crushers with Sandvik’s leadership in the manufacture of high output impact crushers for quarrying, demolition and recycling applications. Powered by a fuel-efficient Cat C-13 diesel engine, the Fintec 1440 is carried on a manoeuvrable tracked undercarriage and incorporates a Sandvik PR301D impactor with a fluid clutch drive. Fed via a two-deck pre-screen, the crusher is a four hammer open-style rotor with a pair of hydraulically-adjustable impact curtains that together deliver high outputs in materials including granite, slate, limestone, brick and asphalt. A relatively low weight of 49.8t and 15.5 m in length in transport configuration, means the Fintec 1440 is transportable in a single load, allowing it to be readily moved and redeployed for maximum utilisation. Optional extras include a dolly unit, belt scales, and radio remote controls. The Fintec product range will also be represented by the 1107 and 542 models. The Fintec 1107 track-mounted jaw crusher is mounted directly onto the chassis via four pins. Hydrostatically-driven, the
crusher can be easily reversed to free blockages, while maximum clearances below the crushing chamber and along the discharge conveyor aid serviceability still further. Close side setting wedge adjustment is hydraulically actuated, down to just 40 mm in recycling applications. A comprehensive range of optional extras combine to make the Fintec 1107 both versatile and durable. These include a central automatic lubrication system, belt protection plates below the crusher, Hardox wear plates on the hopper walls and remote control options. The Fintec 542 track-mounted mobile screen is designed for the recycling and contractor markets. Powered by a Cat 3054C water-cooled diesel with an Engine Shut Down Protection System, the machine is carried on a heavy-duty tracked undercarriage and incorporates a large capacity two-bearing screenbox with increased screening angle built into the bottom deck. Together with a large screening surface area and long throw on the screenbox, this delivers enhanced screening efficiency and throughput. The machine’s belt feeder is fitted with a radio controlled tipping reject grid as standard, while a folding access walkway around the screenbox provides easy maintenance access.
At ConExpo Bobcat will be showing a comprehensive display from the company’s Compact Equipment and Attachment ranges, including the new T320 compact tracked loader and V417 VersaHandler TTC being shown for the first time at the exhibition. The T320 model is a vertical lift path loader offering a 1.455 t operating capacity, making it the largest compact track loader manufactured by Bobcat, and extending the range of compact track loaders available from the company to six. Driven by a 70 kW liquid-cooled diesel engine, the new T320 is designed for increased productivity and greater attachment performance. The increased engine power, coupled with the rugged rubber track system, also provides increased output for tough pushing, digging and grading applications. In addition, the track system provides extra traction, reduced ground pressure and low ground disturbance, with superior flotation to extend contractors’ work seasons. The machine’s 457 mm wide rubber tracks produce just 4.2lb/in2 of ground pressure. The T320 has a lift height of 3.277 m that follows a vertical lift path, allowing it to load trucks easily. The new Bobcat V417 VersaHandler TTC is the fourth model in the VersaHandler telehandler line and the first to offer the Bob-Tach™ attachment mounting system. Selected attachments for largeframe skid-steer loaders, compact tracked loaders and all-wheel steer loaders are approved for use with the V417, providing advantages for customers who already own a large-frame loader.

The Four BFs
Versatile in its use and easy to handle, the four models of bucketcrusher reduces production costs and advances recycling culture. One of the first hydraulic excavators fitted with a jaw crusher was MB Crusher’s BF 90.3 bucketcrusher. “Recycling debris and crushing on site are requirements that cannot be disregarded by companies working in the construction, demolition and building sector as well as in earthmoving in general,” says Guido Azzolin from MB Crusher. “Nowadays our product is increasingly more common. It is no longer niche or specialised equipment, it is becoming standard for construction companies.” MB Crusher has its headquarters in the province of Vicenza, in Breganze. The application areas of this technology include demolition, building, excavation, special applications like breaking up of vineyard soil and crushing of quarry material. Due to their high production capacity, the buckets can be used on big and medium sites, doing away with the hire costs of machines fitted with a crusher. The bucketcrusher works together with a tracked excavator that is normally available on site. The transport costs of the bucketcrusher are negligible. Data gathered from
14
MB Crusher’s customers show that they consider it to be useful for big and small jobs as ease of transport and very low costs make it useful also for crushing small quantities.
Crushing without limits
MB Crusher has designed three models of bucketcrusher. After the success of the BF 90.3 model and in order to meet the requirements of a wide customer base, three more models have been added. These are the BF 70.2, BF 120.4 and BF 60.1. The BF 60.1 weights 1.5 t and is recommended for excavators from 8 t to 14 t. The size of the crushed material can be adjusted from 20 to 100 mm. The bucket’s capacity is 0.5m3. The BF 70.2 weighs 2.25t and is recommended for excavators weighing from 14 to 20 t. The bucket’s capacity is 0.6m3 and the size of the crushed material can be adjusted between 20mm and 120mm. The BF 90.3 weighs 3.5t and is recommended for excavators weighing from 20t to 28t. Allied-Gato Designed and built around Allied-Gator’s newest production technologies and equipment, this major expansion will help accelerate the production of Allied-Gator’s line of hydraulic attachments including the patented MT™ Series Multi-Tool™ while also meeting the company’s exacting manufacturing standards.
Allied-Gator, Inc. sales and marketing manager Mike Ramun cannot help but smile when he thinks about the new 39,000m2 manufacturing facility that the company is constructing as an expansion to its Youngstown, Ohio, headquarters in the US.

well. Available in 11 sizes from 360kg to 23.5t, customers can utilize the MT Series Multi-Tool with patented Allied-Gator Quick-Change™ Shear and Cracker/Crusher Jaw Sets on machines ranging from skid steers and compacts to super-sized excavators. “Every time you give contractors another degree of versatility, you’re saving them money and increasing their capacities by giving them the ability to effectively compete where they couldn’t before,” says Ramun.
The company is even utilizing the MT Series Multi-Tool around the construction site, performing tasks such as the precisioncutting of rebar for use in concrete columns and foundations and the separation and downsizing of foundation fill material. “We focus on innovation,” says Ramun. “We know the demolition industry well and understand the ever-increasing pressure our customers face to improve efficiency and productivity. So it makes sense that we apply the same approach to manufacturing our products. Everything we invest in the quality of our precision manufacturing processes pays off many times over in the performance and durability our products provide in the field.” But while Ramun characterizes the new facility as being a major leap in Allied-Gator’s manufacturing capabilities, it will not alter the values that have defined the company since it was founded in 1973 by Mike’s father, company President John Ramun and grandfather, Mike Ramun. “As a family business, our reputation is very important to us,” he says. “From the composition of our product line to our approach to development and testing, Allied-Gator does things differently than any other manufacturer. Customers who purchase our tools also benefit from our decades of experience with heavy industrial tool design, our dedication to continual product improvement and innovation, as well as our commitment to offering a superior product.” Since Allied-Gator introduced the MT Series Multi-Tool line in 2001, customers have benefited from a wealth of versatility as
Versatility, not to mention reliability and durability, are particularly critical in remote work locations, a fact that project manager of Anchorage, Alaska-based demolition contractor Coldfoot Environmental Ron Tharaldson knows all too well. In Valdez, Alaska, Coldfoot used the MT Series MultiTool model MTR 20 to completely remove a large commercial fish processing plant as part of a waterfront redevelopment project. Once the plant’s massive steel structure was removed with the Shear Jaw Set, Coldfoot immediately relocated the tool across town to demolish a 7,250m2, heavily reinforced concrete hospital structure with the Cracker/Crusher Jaw Set to make way for a new medical facility. Built following the 1964 Alaskan earthquake, the existing hospital structure was designed mostly of 610mm thick concrete floors, ceilings, and walls filled with 32mm diameter rebar to more than withstand even stronger earthquakes. Despite having a window of fewer than 120 days to complete both assignments, “the Allied-Gator MT helped us eliminate several hundred man hours and at least 200 machine hours, finishing the projects over one month ahead of schedule,” says Tharaldson, who credits the tool’s power and his team’s ability to change jaws quickly and continually
• Issue 1 - 2008 • February - March
Tough demolition in Alaska
or’s expansion throughout each project. Tharaldson adds that the MTR 20 and a single 25 t excavator removed and processed 8,774m3 of concrete from the hospital site alone. “It was unbelievable,” he says. “Even with all that heavy concrete and rebar, we never even wore out our first set of teeth on this tool.” While not all demolition projects take place in such extreme conditions, contractors are finding that adaptable tools are the key to ensuring productivity. And that, Ramun says, is what makes the MT Series Multi-Tool so valuable. “The tool is predictable, smooth, and precise, and there’s always a surplus of power to work with,” he says. “That allows contractors to get their work done more efficiently, safeguard their operators from unnecessary risks, and keep maintenance costs to a minimum.” These MT features allow contractors to perform extremely high-volume projects with surprisingly small equipment and crews. For example, Eslich Wrecking Co., Canton, Ohio, was contracted to completely strip out the interior of a 372,000m2 former Ford van plant in Loraine, Ohio, to make way for an industrial warehouse centre. According to Matt Eslich, Eslich Wrecking’s Scrap Manager, speed and efficiency were crucial elements to the project, as each completed phase of the facility is rented out by the building owner as storage space. Equipped with a third-member mounted MTR 10 on a 6.7t mini excavator, two skid-steers, and one aerial lift for torch men, the Eslich crew began to tackle the entire plant. They subsequently added a third-member MTR 15 on a 13.6t mini excavator to double productivity. Although limited ceiling heights, emission restrictions, and fuel costs required Eslich to use his company’s smallest machines for the project, “the small MTs cut all the double-walled channel iron and even the tool rail we used to have to torch,” he says. “Our operators are much more accurate because they don’t have to guess at what they are cutting; they can see it. The accuracy of this tool has enabled us to cut right to the bottom of the truss lines without twisting the bar joist. These tools cut scrap clean, which has reduced our amount of torching on this project by more than half.”
localities heighten their focus on recycling to reduce the amount of salvageable demolition materials being sent to landfills. “Many contractors are struggling with this issue, but it actually opens the door to some very attractive opportunities,” says Ramun. “Traditionally, contractors had to go out of their way to process demolition materials to this degree, but contractors using the Multi-Tool find themselves preparing the materials as they demolish. This results in safer and more controlled demolition methods, more sellable products, and lowered costs for hauling and land filling. That’s good for the environment, the community, and the contractor’s bottom line.” Ramun adds that materials recycling is but one of the many new operational challenges that demolition contractors will have to contend with in the coming years. “Change is inevitable for everyone, which overall is good for the industry,” he says. “But we will soon reach the point where demolition contractors who use traditional methods will find it even harder to compete and perform effectively in the industry without these new technologies.” The added capacity and production capabilities of Allied-Gator’s new manufacturing facility will be instrumental in helping demolition contractors address these and other industry challenges. Long-term plans call for adding even more specialized products designed to meet the increasing demands of special demolition and heavy scrap recycling applications. “The Allied-Gator pipeline is full of new ideas,” says Ramun. “We’re looking forward to sharing the benefits of our future products with demolition industry professionals in the coming years.”

Decommissioning of
“La Fiera di Milano”
The huge decommissioning of Fiera di Milano has started. The project is performed by the temporary consortium containing three of Italy’s largest demolition contractors, General Smontaggi, Cantieri Moderni S.r.l. and Despe S.r.l..
The former historical district of the Fiera di Milano dates back to 1923 and, following a number of enlargement, reconstruction and transformation works, redefines the entire area up to the inauguration of the new buildings of the Portello in 1997.
Huge project and short time frame The surface currently required for decommissioning covers an area of approximately 250,000 m 2, of which 80% is built up with various structures. The district is in a highly urbanized area, dominated by six and seven storey buildings used for residential, tertiary and commercial purposes. Several areas of work are involved, including 150,000 m 2 of built-on area, an overall volume of approximately 2 , 5 0 0 , 0 0 0 m 3 , t h e p re s e n c e o f asbestos-contaminated materials, an estimated volume of rubble of around 350,000 m 3, around 250,000 m 2 of paving and significant amounts of waste materials of a various nature coming from the buildings. This all has to be done in the shortest possible time while ensuring full compliance with existing legislation and reducing impact on the population and traffic.
Temporary demolition consortium
20
For these reasons the largest Italian companies specialized in decommissioning of industrial areas, General Smontaggi S.p.A., Cantieri Moderni S.r.l. and Despe S.r.l., joined forces in a temporary consortium, to tackle the project. The first issue was planning, encompassing all the problems such as an assessment of environmental liabilities, the identification of technologies to safeguard the surrounding environment and workers’ health, a detailed planning of activities, coordination among the various players involved and the management of the staff on the decommissioning site. The operational phase was divided into selective clearance of the buildings and environmental remediation, demolition of buildings and on-site recovery of resulting rubble. Selective clearance involved the removal of all the non-inert materials. Such selection allows the recycling of most of the waste materials, in compliance

with Italian legislation and the guidelines expressed in European Directives. The demolition phase was performed using traditional systems as well as explosives. On average 20 machines of various sizes from 3 to 130 t were used and equipped with specific attachments. These included high reach booms, concrete crushers, pulverisers, hydraulic breakers, sorting grabs and steel shears. Dust suppression was ensured by water fogging systems using a Fog Cannon, similar to an artificial snow making machine.
Recycling directly on site The resulting rubble from the demolition was processed onsite using mobile crushers and recycled as crushed
construction aggregate. The demolition was designed to allow recovery while reducing the impact on the workers and the surrounding environment with the adoption of dust collection systems and a series of dust and sound absorbing panels along the perimeter of the site. For the most significant, complex and prestigious urban regeneration project in Italy the choice has fallen on the Fiera Demolition Team, three of the most qualified and advanced companies on the national scene, General Smontaggi S.p.A., Cantieri Moderni S.r.l. and Despe S.r.l.

Under water wire sawing in Mexico Husqvarna’s versatile wire saw, CS 2512, is used to saw concrete foundations for a 400m long pier, destroyed by hurricane Wilma.
On the CS 2512 (left), the drive wheel is located on the output side of the machine so that slack in the wire never occurs in the machine even when the feeding power is low. The adjustable pressure valve provides accurate control of the sawing operation and superior performance.
A lot of preparations are required as the sawing is done under water. No electricity is needed on the site thanks to Husqvarna’s Smart Box, with remote control connected to the PP 3030 diesel power pack.
Above Professional divers are monitoring the sawing, while one person remains on the pier and runs the wire saw.
The hurricanes that hit North and Central America have provided a great deal of work for the construction industry. In Cozumel, Mexico, Husqvarna’s versatile wire saw, CS 2512, has been used to saw concrete foundations for a 400 m long pier, destroyed by hurricane Wilma in the autumn of 2005.
24
At the end of 2006 Husqvarna Construction Products was contacted by Mexican company SSA to help find the right tools and equipment to clean up after Wilma had demolished one of the piers at Cozumel, an island in the Caribbean Sea off the eastern coast of Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula. Tourism is the main income of Cozumel, and the 400 m long pier is to be reconstructed without disturbing the cruise ship traffic. “The concrete is being cut into 40 t blocks which are lifted by a pantone crane,” says Husqvarna Construction Products US product manager Johan Ekström. “The demanding work is done by divers at a depth of more than 20 m and is carried out at night, when there are no ships at the pier.”
“Wire sawing best option” The alternative to cutting the concrete would be to crush it which would end up on the sea bed and need to be removed. The equipment selected by the company responsible for the cutting work Cobusa was the Husqvarna CS 2512 wire saw. “The CS 2512 is at least 30% more efficient than a traditional wire saw, thanks to its magazine capacity, which allows for 12 m of wire to be stored. It’s also very versatile and easy to set up,” says Cobusa vice president Alberto Esquitin. His team was completely new to wire sawing so training was necessary. “The on site training was very valuable, it made us feel comfortable with the equipment, knowing that Husqvarna fully supported us,” says Alberto Esquitin. Every day, after the cruise ships left the harbour, the Cobusa team set to work. After two hours of rigging, sawing Talk about on site training. Johan Ekström from Husqvarna took diving lessons in order to help out on the project. Here he does thumbs up for the first wire saw cut.

begins. Two divers monitor the sawing, while one person, remains on the pier to run the wire saw and stay in contact with the divers by camera and microphone. The total area to be cut was estimated to be about 2500 m2. “We make one cut every night, which is about 12 m2. So far, we have delivered two wire saws and the wire, C 760 to Cousa. When the work is finished in spring 2008, more than 500 m of wire will have been used.” says Johan Ekström. Sawing with diamond wire is the most efficient way to remove large concrete constructions such as foundations and bridges, or to make holes in thick walls. The big advantage of wire sawing is that there is basically no limit to the depth that can be cut. Another advantage is that the noise level is reduced considerably. The Husqvarna CS 2512, in combination with the hydraulic unit PP 455 E, is a powerful and easy to use wire saw. It can handle very large jobs while, at the same time, being sufficiently compact and mobile to handle smaller jobs. It can be used for a wide range of applications, both on the ground or mounted on walls. On the CS 2512, the drive wheel is located on the output side of the machine so that slack in the wire never occurs in the machine even when the feeding power is low. The adjustable pressure valve provides accurate control of the sawing operation and superior performance. The machine is easy to rig and many cuts can be made directly without external pulley wheels. The concrete is being cut into 40 t blocks which are lifted with a pantone crane. The demanding work is done by divers at a depth of more than 20 m.
15 skid-steers for demolition Maria Leima Brokk operator at PP Drill & Cut.
The world’s only female Brokk operator? Maria Leima had been working as a shop assistant for almost 20 years. Now she is working as an operator at PP Drill & Cut in Gävle, Sweden. A big change, but Maria Leima is very satisfied. “I have always liked machines and got the chance to train as a machine operator. I do not regret that. Today I am one of the team and have a great, responsible and challenging job.” Working as a shop assistant demands long working days and can often be poorly paid. As a result Maria decided to look at changing her profession. She has always liked machines and often thought she would enjoy working with them. She decided to go to the jobcentre to see if there were any vacancies and as a result she applied for and was accepted to train as a machine operator. This training took a year. During the year she learned how to operate various machines, from a mini excavator to a bucket loader. Maria enjoyed the training because she learned both the practical and theoretical sides of working with machinery. During her practical training she heard of a firm called PP Drill & Cut, where she is now permanently employed.
Favourite is the Brokk 90
Maria Leima almost always drives Brokk machines, her favourite being the Brokk 90.This is because it is small and flexible as well as being strong and capable of handling a lot of different demolition tasks. She enjoys being an operator as each day is so different. PP Drill & Cut carry out many demolishing jobs in different places in central Sweden, so as an operator work is normally a maximum of one week at each site. When asked if working with this equipment is heavy work, Maria does not find this to be the case and has only once had to ask for help. At times there is pressure in the job and that is when an experienced operator is required. She works under the same conditions as male colleagues and they are happy to work alongside her, as she knows how to handle a machine. To begin with she felt pressure to prove herself and to be better than her male colleagues, but she no longer feels the need
26
to do this. Maria handles the everyday care of the machine and the service department at PP Drill and Cut take care of the major services.
Demolishing work requires thought as well as action
The demolition business is sometimes considered a hazardous and dirty business, but this is changing slowly. Surely around the world as industry is aware of this and is working towards improving in these areas due to demands from governments and from clients. Another important step toward improving this is educating operators to meet higher standards. Working on different demolition jobs demands an operator who has the capability to cope with a wide range of different situations, to avoid mistakes. The Brokk robots cope well with these situations, as well as saving time, money, and so as a result working conditions have improved. Maria recommends that other women consider a job in the demolition business, as it requires thought as well as action!

One of the UK’s leading demolition companies, Squibb Demolition, based at Barking in Essex, has expanded its operations with the purchase of 15 new skid-steer loaders from Bobcat. Already in use at some of the 25 demolition projects currently being carried out by Squibb Demolition around the country, the new Bobcat skid-steers were specified and supplied by compact loader and attachment specialist, Versatile Equipment Limited, of Southfleet in Kent. The Bobcat skid-steers being used by Squibb Demolition comprise a mixture of compact 463 and S130 models suited to the confined space work found in demolition and other areas of building and construction. All the skid-steer loaders bought by Squibb Demolition are working on solid tyres, with the S130 models equipped with industrial grapple buckets and the 463 machines using standard buckets. Both sizes of machine are being used to gather and collect demolition spoil and load the waste into large containers on the Squibb Demolition sites. The 463 and S130 models are part of a complete range of Bobcat skid-steer loaders covering operating weights from 1301 to 3821 kg and rated operating capacities from 329 to 1400 kg. As well as compactness, the other aspects of Bobcat skid-steers that contribute to their high manoeuvrability are their ability to turn around in their own length and fast cycle times. They can do more work in less time than it takes conventional material-handling equipment. In addition, with controls that allow for precise movements, even in the tightest of spaces, Bobcat skid-steers ensure safe, efficient operation at all times in areas inaccessible to traditional machines. “The Bobcat skid-steer is a tried and tested machine which meets the exacting requirements found on our demolition sites,
which are among the biggest in the UK,” says Squibb Demolition Plant Manager Dawn Power. “After years of hiring all our machines in, we have purchased the new Bobcat skid-steers as part of a drive to increase our self-sufficiency and to increase our control over costs. We are aiming to provide over 70% of our needs from our own internal fleet in the future.” Squibb Demolition has also formed its own internal tool hire operation, which includes the Bobcat skid-steers in the fleet, and Gary Hindle has joined the company as Small Plant Manager with responsibility for this area. A prominent member of the National Federation of Demolition Contractors, Squibb Demolition can trace the company’s roots back to 1948, when the founder, Harry T Squibb, started the business for the demolition and clearance of large areas of East End tenements after the Second World War. During the intervening years, the company continued to expand and early in 2008, will celebrate its 60th anniversary. Harry Squibb’s son, Leslie, joined the company in 1969 and is the present Chairman, whilst his son, who is also called Leslie, is now Managing Director. In line with family tradition, 1995 saw the addition of Westley Squibb. Westley joined the company straight from school and gained experience in all aspects of demolition, culminating in his elevation to the Board of Directors in 2001. The wealth of experience available at Squibb Demolition allows the company to take on any project including those incorporating the use of explosives and the controlled collapse of structures as well as façade retention, to span a wide range of locations from city centre office blocks, petrochemical installations, car manufacturing plants and gas distribution sites to airport terminals.

Breaker and compactors from Idromeccanica
At Samoter, Idromeccanica Italiana will display a wide range of breakers including the “M” series, which are for use on every type of excavator. This range matches the newest machines being equipped with pressurized oil systems meaning that they are able to tolerate counter-pressure other than being able to work with a small amount of oil. The “M” series is being further enlarged as the breakers
are also featured by a simple design, which makes servicing easy. Among the compactors, the new C910 compactor will be exhibited. The 900kg compactor is suitable for machines up to 20 t. Samples of non-original spare parts for the most important breakers on the local and international market will be shown.

Two new breakers from Promove Italian firm Promove will present at Samoter two new models of hydraulic breakers: XP70, the baby hammer designed to fit 800 kg class of miniexcavators, which is becoming more and more popular, and XP1000, the new all-rounder to fit excavators from 12 to 22 tons. Constant development attitude is the main reason of PMV’s success and the mother of all their new machines. This hammer shares many of the features of the XP series like blank-firing prevention system, no-accumulator and no-diaphragm system for high reliability and easy maintenance, silenced casing, high back pressure allowed. This last concept helps the installation of the hammer on very small machines, avoiding all the job to realise a low pressure backline on the hydraulics of the excavator. Today many of the hammer hydraulic circuits come from the manufacturer and very often have the back line pressurised (10-15 bar), consequently the low back pressure hammers cannot be fitted without further costs and work on the machine. It will be the right friend for all the small activities, in civil works, gardening, indoor demolition and digging and similar applications, with excellent productivity and reliability, and absolutely low maintenance requirements. XP1000, another new product, will fill the gap between XP800 and XP1200. Competitors in this range have full compliance with all the machines on the market, model by model, so it was necessary to cover the distance with this new model, lighter than XP1200 but with the same performances and features. It is designed sharing same technical advantages of other XP mid-size and large hammers, including auto-greasing system, frequency vs. energy adjustment valve and underwater ready. Furthermore, Promove looks at the future of demolition developing bigger demolition tools for bigger jobs and to fit large excavators (80-130 tons). Aware about difficulties of this segment of the market, Promove wants to be among the
market leaders in the demolition attachments betting on high performance and, most important, outstanding reliability of its equipment. Shortly, the new hammer XP7000 will be heavily tested. It is a 7 t hammer to fit excavators from 80 to 130 t, that will perform with an energy of 15000 joule on a 210 mm tool.
About Promove
Promove manufactures hydraulic hammers and demolition crushers for using in quarrying, tunnelling, road construction, civil engineering, major demolition (including underwater) and construction works. The range of attachments include breakers to fit excavators up to 60 t with features like high backpressure allowed, blank-firing prevention system, speed/energy setting valve, square-section cylinder, auto-greasing pump. Multi-processor crushers feature easily interchangeable jaws to cover all primary and secondary demolition and metal cutting application with one tool. Further to high performance and top-class reliability, fast deliveries, technical support and spare parts availability are key factors at Promove. Generally, all models are available for fast shipment, while wide inventory of components allow quick shipment of all spare parts for Promove attachments.

and sorting grapple G300 B series is especially designed for demolition and recycling tasks. Select the G300B with shells with bars for demolition, and use the closed shell version for recycling, as this is more suitable for loading and unloading because of their smooth interiors. The G300B series has fewer components, so it is easy to maintain. It is available in a wide range of models and offers almost unlimited application options: excellent for stripping any kind of construction; selective demolition; sorting building and demolition waste, paper or rags; clearing building sites; and unloading and loading containers.
MP15 and MP20 - Multi-processor Caterpillar’s hydraulic demolition shears series enables the operator to handle virtually any demolition and reduction job simply by using the basic yoke and a choice of six available jaw sets. These demolition shears are compact and light in construction, yet incredibly strong. By mounting the yoke to the excavator arm one can achieve maximum reach; the operator don’t even have to disassemble the stick. The yoke’s strong swivel provides a continuous 360° rotation which, in combination with the bucket cylinder, allows one to carry out the demolition job quickly and precisely from any angle.
The versatility of this Caterpillar demolition shears series also adds to its low cost of ownership and efficiency. The contractor only have to buy the basic equipment and expand the jaw set when required, and the replacement investment is lower when one want to replace a set of shears. By selecting the right jaw for a specific job the user can demolish and reduce more rapidly. The contractor can even separate the demolition waste directly on site. These demolition shears are rugged yet lightweight, so a lighter and therefore cheaper machine can be used with maximum efficiency.
CVP 75
The versatility of Caterpillar’s Vibratory Plate Compactor CVP series is second to none. The combination of power and highfrequency vibration, combined with optimal manoeuvrability, make these vibratory plates ideal for any task. They can be used on a boom or stick, in many different ways and for a wide variety of applications. The vibratory plates are available in various models, and each model features many technical characteristics to ensure almost fault-free performance and low maintenance.
Rip & Load package Caterpillar offers a unique Rip and Load arrangement for hydraulic excavators working in quarries that are specialists in aggregates production. Quick couplers, Ripper tines and Rock buckets that are fully compatible with the Cat Excavator range will deliver excellent ripping and loading performance. Minimum tool change times will help match ripping, loading and rock production needs. Ripper-to-bucket changes are made hydraulically in less than 35 seconds. This gives the operator complete flexibility to continually adjust ripping, sorting and loading work.
Dedicated quick couplers for excavators and wheel loaders Caterpillar CW serie is the definitive universal solution for
quick-coupling almost all types of equipment in earthmoving demolition applications. The CW excavator quick coupler system is very efficient and cost-effective. It will also save lots of valuable time on site, because it is a universal fit for all equipment, it is simple to operate, and the advanced 3D design will guarantee optimum performance and minimum loss of breakout and penetration force. The SW and PW System quick coupler system for wheel loaders offer unique features that put it in a class of its own. By offering a vertical coupling (SW) and horizontal coupling system (PW), Cat offers a solution for all front loaders whatever the make or type. A small opening between machine and attachment ensures an optimal breakout and thrust force. In addition, the self-correcting functioning of the hydraulic cylinder locks the system between the adaptor hook and the wedge housing, which reduces wear and tear considerably. Besides these products there will be a block handling arrangement, a pallet fork, several buckets and a dedicated crusher among others on show. “Caterpillar plays a key role in bringing to consumers the best machine and work tool products. CGT’s strong performance and excellent reputation have put us in a position to further strengthen our market base by expanding into high-growth areas. With several unique machine and work tool solutions, we are excited to showcase our broad array of products at Samoter meeting user needs throughout the enterprise”, said Davide Bianchi, Marketing Manager, Special Industries, CGT. Caterpillar supports its work tools with a comprehensive range of pre- and after sales services that cover everything from advice on work tool selection to operator training, equipment management, and a range of financial and insurance products.

The town of Paldiski in Estonia is investing in the future with a harbour project that will increase passenger travel to Sweden. Private investors have acquired a site on the south shore of the Gulf of Finland, where the Soviet Navy had previously erected a training centre for nuclear submarines. For many years this restricted area was called The Pentagon, comprising over 20 buildings and covering an area of almost 3 km2. The aim is to establish an industrial and office complex, but beforehand the buildings needed to be demolished and the site cleared and a job for a RUBBLE MASTER Compact Recycler RM80. The RM80 played an important role in demolishing the former Soviet military complex. The total amount of demolition debris of concrete with steel reinforcement and bricks was estimated at 100,000 t. The RUBBLE MASTER Compact Recycler RM80 used by contractor, Levkoriin & KA OÜ, processed 60 % of all demolition waste material on site. “We are a small company totally dedicated to demolition,” says Levkoriin & KA OÜ managing director Aleksandr Koryagin. “The company has handled all sorts of demolition projects over the last 10 years and is therefore one of the most established companies in this special field in Estonia. The demolition projects include mostly buildings and other structures of the former Soviet era, such as the one here.
Construction work is booming in the Baltic”, says Veljo Laur, sales manager of Balti Tehnika, RUBBLE MASTER representative in Estonia. Numerous demolition sites are creating space for new projects. Balti Tehnika is a group of companies located in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania with many years of experience in construction machinery. They noticed the trend to mobile recycling back in 2003 and chose RUBBLE MASTER as a partner with international success for the growing recycling market. More and more customers in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania now benefit from the many advantages of the mobile impact crushers that recycle waste building materials on site for demolition projects and in road building. One stretch of the motorway to St. Petersburg, for example, has been renovated using an RM80. “Today 15 RUBBLE MASTER compact crushers and some RM screens are in operation in the Baltics,” says Veljo Laur. “The sales prospects of RUBBLE MASTER in his market very promising as the main benefits for RUBBLE MASTER customers are the high productivity and low fuel consumption.”

RM100 high performance and availability “My customers earn with me,” stresses Robert Thoma junior from Thoma Bau- u. Recycling GmbH & Co. KG in Bavaria. He attaches great importance to the performance and availability of his fleet of machines in order to offer his customers professionalism and fair prices. Thoma Bau- u. Recycling is a specialist in the mobile recycling of asphalt roads, which are crushed on the job sites to the required final grain size and turned into environmentally compatible, stable top bedding material. To expand the recycling activities an RM100 together with OS100 mobile oversize grain separator were purchased. Over 200 t/h of ready-to-use 0/32 mm graded material are produced from broken asphalt material with only one operator required for the mobile RUBBLE MASTER RM100 and OS100. The high throughput, even with steel reinforced concrete, plus remote controlled simultaneous crushing and manoeuvring operations from the loader, were key factors in Robert Thoma junior’s purchasing decision. Waste pre-stressed concrete is being processed in a single pass to 0/32 mm with all steel parts being removed by the magnetic separator.

US Denucci Excavating invests in a C-12+ The US company Denucci Excavating based in Bristol, Pennsylvania has been in the business of demolition and excavation for the past 40 years. Since experiencing rapid growth over the last twelve months Denucci has expanded its workforce and now employs 24 people. On the production side, machinery is also being updated to meet demand as more excavated demolition materials are produced, resulting in an increase in onsite crushing and screening. To cope with the extra demand the company needed to find a high value solution that offered long term benefits. Denucci decided to upgrade the crushing equipment to give a bet-
the very latest maintenance, control and automation technology, allowing for greater control and providing more efficient and productive operation.
These key features include: • Central greasing system as standard. • Over band magnet ensuring the removal of any concrete reinforcing bars. • Computer designed web and flange chassis for strength and flexibility.
NG EQU IPMENT ter return on time and energy spent, while offering better consistency of product size. To fulfil this brief, Denucci Excavating chose to go with Extec’s range of mobile crushers. Denucci decided to invest in a C12+ jaw crusher. The C12+ possesses all the features of the previous C-12, but now comes complete with
Key to the reliability and performance of the C12+ is the Vogel automatic centralised lubrication system, ensuring that bearings of the machine always get the optimal amount of lubricant. By lubricating the bearing frequently, with small amounts of grease, the C12+ Vogel automatic lubrication system eliminates over-greasing as well as lack of lubrication. This means less wear, less downtime, less cost for repairs and spare parts. In addition the use of an over band magnet ensures the removal of any reinforcing bars when concrete is crushed, a time saving feature that also
allows for better maintenance and reliability. With a new overhaul of the chassis, using compact, heavy steel and a web and flange construction, improved strength and flexibility is offered, whatever the
materials or conditions the C12+ is placed in. This means that the machine now has a better range of application, reduced maintenance and a likely increase in lifetime expectancy. The C12+ uses diesel hydraulic power via the Caterpillar C-9 Industrial engine - 261 kW / 350 hp that provides hydraulic transmission without clutches. Hydraulic power, as standard in Extec products, allows for great versatility, a necessity when crushing.

Recycling “Combi System” makes a difference Central Demolition, based in Bonnybridge, Scotland, has invested in a new recycling plant. Combining General Kinematics, Powerscreen and Kiverco equipment, all sourced from Blue Machinery Scotland, Central Demolition has added to its existing recycling plant and created a tandem configuration of recycling machines to process large volumes of construction and demolition waste for the production of a wide range of saleable reclaimed materials. Central Demolition is reclaiming between 90%-95% from the thousands of tonnes of raw waste material at its Bonnybridge recycling station, which are brought in from its own demolition and site clearance contracts as well as materials received from other sources throughout Scotland and the North East of England. Central Demolition is a multi-disciplined organisation specialising in demolition and dismantling, licensed asbestos removal, earthmoving, site clearance, plant and tipper hire, landfill and recycling. The company is a member of the National Federation of Demolition Contractors and complies with all the requisite industry standards and techniques. Formed in 1993, Central Demolition has evolved to become a national leading organisation in its specialist fields, with broad expertise in all its activities. The company has always placed great emphasis on investing in the best possible plant and equipment for its various operations and has enjoyed a long and beneficial working relationship with Blue Machinery Scotland. “We look on Blue Machinery Scotland as our one-stop-shop for all our recycling needs and their range of distributorships allows us to mix and match equipment to suit our processes,” says Central Demolition Managing Director Ross Craig. “Blue Machinery is an expert in their field and we know we can rely on their skills right from the planning stage through to installation and commissioning. In addition we find that their after sales product support through Spares UK
is prompt and efficient, keeping any downtime to an absolute minimum”. Central Demolition has installed a number of additional recycling machines to further enhance primary and secondary reclamation of recyclables from, predominantly, construction and demolition waste. The new plant consists of a Grizzly Separator from General Kinematics, a Conveyor and a five bay Picking Station system from Kiverco. These lead to a General Kinematics De-stoner and a Powerscreen 615 Trommel, which carry out the final secondary screening and stockpiling. The compatibility of all these differing marques has allowed Central Demolition to configure the installation so that the processing sequence is as effective and automated as possible, with a potential for further add-on equipment should the need arise. Incoming raw waste is first pre-sorted automatically by the GK Grizzly Separator. The resulting material is then conveyed to the under-cover picking station for manual sorting to designated bins. From here, the final stages are through the GK De-stoner and Powerscreen Trommel 615, which separate, screen and stockpile as a secondary process. The De-stoner works in conjunction with the trommel to clean up the mid-size material after the inert fines have been removed at 10mm. The resulting clean 10mm-180mm is then combined with the clean hardcore from the primary recycling stage for crushing by a TEREX Pegson XR400 mobile crusher to produce recycled aggregates. From the large daily tonnages of waste that come into their recycling station, Central Demolition is able to reclaim an increased range of clean saleable materials, including ferrous and non-ferrous metals, recycled aggregates in various specified sizings, composting, soil improvement and landfill cover materials, board, timber and paper.

Rockster Recycler bridges the gap With landfill costs rising across Europe, transport distances increasing from point of extraction to delivery, as well as competition becoming more and more intense in all sectors of manufacturing, savings must be sought in every possible way. Rockster Recycler compact mobile plants are becoming more and more commonplace in all manufacturing sectors as a very useful tool to help gain a competitive advantage in profits through savings. The Austrian manufacturer is showing companies how to establish money saving protocols, and to build a solid growth market within their own doors. How to dispose of 10 m long beams composed of reinforced concrete? A bridge building company in Northern Spain raised this question. The problem was that a certain part of the regularly produced bridge beams are broken and cannot be used for construction purposes. Due to rising landfill costs, the company was looking for an alternative solution to disposal and a machine able to crush and separate the material.
In the past the company had tried different recycling plants, all of them not able to crush the hard reinforced material, which includes 4 mm diameter braded wire of. In October 2007 the company owner made another attempt, this time with the Rockster R900 impact crusher. First, the beams were cut into pieces of 1.5 m each and then put into the crusher. Thanks to the flexibility of the R900, which is equipped with two fully hydraulically adjustable swing beams and a hydrostatic drive system, in combination with the rugged crusher design, the crushing process was successful. The machine’s magnetic separator separated all the steel and the material was sorted into crushed concrete and steel. The company could not only avoid landfill costs but has also created a new revenue source with the sale of the final material. The R900 has since become a regular part of the bridge builder’s assortment and is now in daily operation.

Red Rhino awarded gold in Green Apple Awards
Red Rhino Crushers were one of the major prize winners in the International Green Apple Awards 2007 for Environmental Best Practice. Red Rhino was given the National Gold Award in recognition of their “Compact Onsite Recycling Solutions” project. The UK botanist and TV personality Professor David Bellamy, OBE presented the trophy at The House of Commons. The trophies are awarded annually in recognition of organisations carrying out projects that benefit the environment. The judges commented: “These compact towable crushers bring full recycling potential to any building site. Rather than sending useful aggregate to landfill, it can be crushed and reused on site, or sold on to be recycled by a third party. Either way the benefits to the user and environment can be significant.” The award-winning project will be featured in “The Green Book” and the organisation will also be presented with a prestigious Green Heroes Shield in the spring. The Green Apple Awards campaign is run by The Green Organisation, an independent, non-political, non-profitable organisation that recognizes, rewards and promotes environmental best practice around the world. Red Rhino supporters include the Environment Agency, the Chartered Institution of Waste Management, the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health and various other professional bodies. National organiser Roger Woollens commented: “We had around 750 nominations last year and presented about 80 awards, so Red Rhino did particularly well to win a Gold National Award against some very strong competition.”

The first-ever under water bridge demolition project in China was carried out using a Hilti DS WS15 electric wire saw. A report from “under the bridge” in Shanghai.
Controlled under water demolition The Henan Road Bridge - originally a wooden structure, but rebuilt in 1928 in reinforced concrete - carried traffic over Shanghai’s Suzhou Creek for around 80 years. However, it was not only beginning to show its age, it also stood in the way of the construction of a new Shanghai subway line. In 2007 it was thus decided that the bridge had to go. A new, wider 6-lane bridge, designed to reflect the lines of the old bridge, would be built to replace it. In this important project, the needs of contractor Shanghai Jiankebuqiang Ltd. were looked after by diamond specialists Wenson Liu and Tommy Li of Hilti China. The entire bridge had to be cut into a number of individual sections. The extensive underwater operations required presented the biggest challenge as a team of divers would have to use special equipment to cut through the bridge piers under water.
6 professionals - 5 months A task force of six experienced demolition engineers worked on the project for a total of five months. The sawing operation itself took one month. To begin with, some delicate work involving removal of all frescos and decorative elements from the old Henan Bridge had to be carried out. These were to be incorporated in the new bridge. The Hilti D LP32 / DS TS32 wall saw system was then used to cut away the bridge parapet. Hilti’s innovative Traction Control technology ensured maximum sawing performance. The system constantly monitors all relevant operating parameters, allowing the ideal speed of advance to be calculated electronically. The rate of sawing progress is thus optimized automatically to suit the material being cut. In this way, cutting below optimum performance, or other undesired effects such as the blade sticking, causing the motor to stall, can be virtually ruled out. All other sections of the bridge above water level were also cut away with the Hilti wall saw system. This special machine demonstrated its numerous advantages very impressively, especially when cutting the bridge deck, the supporting beams and the upper sections of the bridge piers. All that remained of the bridge were individual sections that could be lifted away by a heavy-lifting crane.
Show-down under water The most difficult task, however, was yet to be carried out. In a complex operation, specially-trained divers attached a

37-meter-long diamond sawing wire around the remaining base section of each bridge pier. The Hilti DS WS15 electric wire saw - positioned above water level - did all the rest. This powerful wire saw system can be set up quickly, is easy to operate and features a pneumatic advance control system for constant wire tension and smoothly controllable drive speed that ensures optimum cutting performance under all conditions. Even the thickest structural components can be cut through without any problem. The first bridge pier base section was cut through in only twelve hours, lifted out of the water by crane and loaded onto a barge before being cut into sections for transport. One by one, each of the other piers of the old Henan Road Bridge was dealt with in the same way. Thanks to this highly effective combination of special equipment and experienced professionals, the first underwater bridge demolition project to be carried out in China was completed quickly, safely, reliably and very successfully. The Hilti DS WS15 wire saw system and D LP32 / DS TS32 wall saw system proved their efficiency as a solution for demanding demolition work
and allowed the Henan Road Bridge demolition project to be completed ahead of schedule.

International championship in profes
Below the wall saw blade WSH*** from TYROLIT
Finally, the first competition of its kind is organised by TYROLIT for the international concrete sawing and drilling industry. For years there has been a lot of talking locally about organising concrete sawing and drilling competions between professional concrete cutters. In some cases this type of championship has taken place but never before internationally. TYROLIT has taken the initiative and is now, after months of extensive planning launching the first international competition involving professional concrete cutters. PDi will take an active part in the tournament covering each step of the competion including the “Grand Finale” in January 2009. 44

ssional concrete sawing and drilling In 2008, TYROLIT organizes the first international competition in concrete drilling and sawing: the TYROLIT Cutting Pro Competition. And the idea is that professional users from the industry demonstrate their abilities in wall sawing, core drilling and hand sawing. Winner and runner-up of every national championship will be invited to participate in the European Championship in Austria in January 2009. The participating companies, all competitors and the winners can look forward to receiving attractive prizes.
“Power, Know-how and Ambition” 20 athletes will participate in every national championship. In many countries the selection will be done by means of qualifying tournaments. The TYROLIT Cutting Pro Competition presents concrete cutting and drilling as a sports challenge: Power, Know How and Ambition of the athletes will decide between winning and losing. Every national competition will last - including the award ceremony - about half a day. It will take place parallel to a local TYROLIT fair and thereby creates an attractive event for professional users, customers and visitors.
Standard Rules and Regulations The TYROLIT Cutting Pro Competition uses a standardised set of regulations that allows for fair competitions and internationally comparable results. In addition, machines, tools, concrete and all other competition material are defined and conditioned to guarantee that every athlete can compete on the same terms.
Exercises and Products Athletes compete against each other in three exercises: wall sawing, core drilling and hand sawing. The time is taken for every exercise, the participant with the fastest total time wins. On the stage, every exercise is performed by two athletes in parallel. The result is an exciting competition that is intuitively understandable and attractive for spectators.
Wall sawing: The goal of this exercise is to saw a slice off a reinforced concrete block as quickly as possible. The cut has to be performed in at least two passes. An optimal performance will depend on one hand on the ideal cutting depth of the first and second pass. On the other hand, the feeling of the athlete for machine, tool and concrete will be decisive. The wall sawing system consists of the TYROLIT wall saw head WZ and the hydraulic power pack PPH25RR***. This aggregate directs the power of 25 kW by means of a radio remote control system onto the TYROLIT diamond wall saw blade WSL*** (diameter 825 mm).
Core drilling: In this exercise the athletes have to drill a hole in a reinforced concrete block. With the start signal, the drill rig has to be mounted and motor plus core drill have to be fixed before the drilling can begin. The installation of the drilling system requires skill and experience. A fast drilling time will depend on applying the right pressure on the core drill. For this exercise, a state-of-the-artTYROLIT system consisting of the drill rig HCCB-5 and the drill motor DME32S*** (electric) will be used. The core bit CDL*** has a diameter of 102 mm.
Hand sawing: A disc has to be cut off from a concrete tube. Power and knowhow of the athlete in dealing with the one-handed angle grinder are essential for this task. The set-up consists of a petrol-driven, one-handed angle grinder (5 kW) that powers the TYROLIT diamond saw blade DCU*** (diameter 350 mm). The cutting is done in wet conditions with the water directed into the cut over the concrete tube and not via the machine.
Safety In order to take part in the TYROLIT Cutting Pro Competition, the athletes must have proficiency and experience in the command of the machines and tools. In addition, the regulations specify the mandatory protective equipment for every exercise. On the stage, the movements of the competitors are limited to safety areas that are clearly marked.

Renewed Focus Puts JCB on Demolition Map JCB has been active in the demolition industry for as long as most of us can remember but the company’s renewed focus on the sector in recent years has paid dividends, as PDi’s Mark Anthony reports.
Below JCB General Manager - Waste, Recycling and Demolition Jonathan Garnham at the recent EDA Convention in Vienna.
A visit to the JCB World Headquarters in Staffordshire, England is an impressive mix of the traditional to the thoroughly modern.
Focus on Demolition The company’s manufacturing and parts facility are state-ofthe-art; the buildings high-tech; the technology advanced. But this is a company that is clearly still in touch with its roots. Some of JCB’s original machines are still on display, a constant reminder of Joseph Cyril Bamford, the man who gave his initials to the company and its most famous progeny: the JCB backhoe loader. Elsewhere, photographs lining the walls chart the company’s evolution from local agricultural equipment supplier to global manufacturer. And visitors do not have to search too hard to see that the company has been active in the demolition industry, at least in its native UK, since its first foray into the hydraulic excavator market. Yet what the company has achieved in the demolition sector in the distant past pales beside what it has done in the past few years. “Demolition is a market sector that requires a high degree of expertise and focus,” explains, JCB General Manager - Waste, Recycling and Demolition Jonathan Garnham. “Around three years ago, the company took the decision to give this important sector the focus it requires, setting in place a team of people who are charged with responding to the specific needs of demolition companies.” That decision has proved to be as successful as it was timely. The company has enjoyed 25% year-on-year growth in sales of its demolition specification excavators, a trend that started in the UK but which has now spread to areas including Italy, Spain, Germany and Russia. Even more telling was a programme of focussed commitment to the UK’s National Federation of Demolition Contractors during 2006. “We have always worked very closely with the NFDC but in 2006, we sponsored the Federation’s annual convention in Barcelona and also hosted our own ‘Demolition Day’ that was attended by many of their members,” says Garnham. As a direct result, the company sold 30 demolition specification excavators to NFDC member companies, 28 of them to companies that had not previously run JCB machines. JCB is a past-master of intelligent and targeted marketing. Yet for all its talk of focus, sponsorship and event hosting, it is the machines behind the story that have made the difference.
built to Xtra Duty specification: the JS220, JS260, JS330 and JS460. Of these, the JS330 is additionally offered in a Modular Joint and high reach boom configuration that takes the working height to 21 m. Featuring the standard XD Level II FOPS cab, engine pre-cleaner and heavy-duty undercarriage, the high reach derivative of the JS330 also includes additional counterweight, a modified cab with a tilting seat, additional guarding and a slow slew speed capability. A tilting cab is offered as an option. Factory or dealer fit options include additional work lights, boommounted CCTV camera, automatic greasing and dust suppression systems. “In high reach configuration, the JS330XD is the largest machine we manufacture with a high reach boom,” says Garnham. “Unlike high reach machines modified by third-party manufacturers, our high reach equipment

and machines are designed and built to work together seamlessly. This also allows us to factor in many unique customer requirements such as straight booms or the ability to run on biodegradable oils, for example.” Equally important is the fact that JCB’s ability to design and build everything allows the company to keep its machines simple and easy to operate. “Our XD machines are robust, durable, powerful and reliable but it is their simplicity that is the primary reason for their popularity,” adds Garnham. “We worked very closely with the NFDC when they produced their high reach guidance notes and we have been at the cutting edge of high reach demolition machine design. But we are always mindful that our machines are required to work in parts of the world that don’t have the same demands and standards. Our machines are, therefore, designed to be as easy-to-use and maintain as possible.”
“Health, saftey and regulations the key drivers” Garnham reports that he is watching with considerable interest the development of the world’s first 90 m high reach machine and says that he has witnessed a growing customer trend towards heavier, lower reach machines with the ability to wield huge hydraulic attachments. However, he firmly believes that health and safety demands and regulations will be the key drivers in the ongoing development of demolition specification excavators in the future. “Whole Body Vibration is a major concern both to regulatory bodies and to manufacturers like ourselves. All of our machines are thoroughly tested for vibration levels and we are constantly striving to reduce operator exposure,” he concludes. “Demolition excavators in the future might be bigger and they might be able to carry ever larger attachments but one thing is absolutely certain. They will be safer, both for the operator and for those working alongside him.”

The B Size isn’t always everything. But at the US company Cleveland Wrecking Company, it’s the only thing. PDi’s US editor Jim Parsons reports.
The company, based in Covina, California, focuses primarily on large, complex, turnkey infrastructure and facility demolition projects that require a wealth of expertise, equipment, and management resources to meet tight deadlines and solve problems. Some demolition contractors might find such challenges intimidating; company president Jim Sheridan relishes them. “We’re big on meeting schedule commitments because they are often the driving factor to all of these projects,” the 35-year industry veteran says. “When we say it’ll be done in three months, it will be done in three months. We get in and out so that the owner can keep other parts of the construction programme on track.”
Original thinking Cleveland Wrecking began in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1910 and was founded by five brothers who had grown up in Ohio. In the years before World War II, the brothers split the company into five branches, each with a specialty suited to the region it served. “The Southern California office focused on earthquake and infrastructure work, ultimately becoming the company’s headquarters,” says vice president Janet Martocchio. “Focusing on a specific market also enabled the company to pioneer new technologies and approaches, including the wrecking ball and Bobcats for massive floor-by-floor demolition projects.” After several decades of expansion, Cleveland Wrecking underwent some restructuring of its own before being acquired by URS Corporation in 1999. Becoming part of one of the world’s largest engineering, construction, and technical services firms has proven to be a natural fit for Cleveland Wrecking’s bigger-is-better project focus. “Large-scale demolition is a limited market to begin with,” says Martocchio. “Because we are a much tighter organization now, we are able to pursue only those projects for which we feel best qualified and can bring the most value to the client. We can also team with our parent company to pursue design-build and turnkey projects.” Cleveland Wrecking’s many notable projects include highprofile assignments such as the eight-month demolition and

abatement of the historic Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles. While such projects are usually associated with brute force, the 500-room steel, brick, and concrete building, constructed in 1921, required something of a delicate touch, including handremoval of historic items from the kitchen pantry where Robert Kennedy was assassinated. The Ambassador’s North Wing had to be removed one floor at a time to protect the hotel’s one surviving component, an annex that included the storied Coconut Grove nightclub and will become part of a new high school being constructed on the site. More than 40,000 t of concrete and brick were removed in 2,600 loads, while 3,366 t of steel was salvaged. Cleveland Wrecking also played a supporting role in the demolition of Seattle’s Kingdome indoor sports arena. After implosion of the concrete dome, which stood approximately 76 m high and 201m in diameter, Cleveland Wrecking used conventional demolition methods to process 46,000 m3 of rubble at an on-site crushing plant. All recycled aggregate materials were used for construction of a new football and soccer stadium at the site. One of the firm’s more technically challenging assignments involved the demolition of three office towers bounded on four sides by busy streets in downtown Los Angeles for the California Department of Transportation. Because the three, five, and six-storey buildings were posttensioned structures, the project team installed additional shoring and bracing on the ground floor to provide continuous structural integrity of the building while the floors were removed one at a time using hydraulic hammers followed by heavy wrecking. Approximately 6,000 t of material was hauled offsite for recycling and reuse, with remaining material crushed and left on-site for structural fill. Although specializing in large-scale projects often puts Cleveland Wrecking in the spotlight, some of the firm’s most notable accomplishments are those that largely go unnoticed by the public. As part of its demolition of several structures linking the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge and downtown San Francisco for CalTrans, Cleveland Wrecking was given only a
Big Picture single weekend to remove the 1,800 feet Fremont Street off-ramp and safeguard a new temporary ramp close by. Mobilizing a fleet of 17 track excavators, six loaders, 15 water trucks, and multiple skid steers and boom lifts, the demolition team removed 6,900 m3 of concrete and 1,500 t of steel in just over 32 hours.
Qualified own staff Synchronizing these intricate operations on such a large scale requires a well-trained workforce, a quality that Martocchio says has been an essential element of Cleveland Wrecking’s approach. “We strive to continually improve our processes and create a company where employees are vested in its success,” she says of the firm’s 250 employees. A key factor, she adds, is Cleveland Wrecking’s preference to cultivate the talents of its operators internally rather than hiring them from other contractors. “It’s challenging enough to find good operators as it is, but people who come from other companies often bring their own methods and mindsets that may be counter to the way we do things,” she says. “Instead, we try to hire young people interested in a career, and put them in a mentoring programme that exposes them to both the office and field sides of the business.” Though more costly, Martocchio says the investment has paid off in both performance and a very low rate of attrition. “People generally stay here for the long haul,” she says. Of course, it helps to have an extensive range of equipment to draw from as well. Anchored by Link Belt excavators, Cleveland Wrecking’s fleet also includes products from Caterpillar, LaBounty, Atlas Copco and others. “Support and reliability are the biggest things for us,” says Sheridan. “If we don’t have the support from the manufacturer or dealer, we can’t do the project. It’s particularly important because demolition is a projection-based industry. Hidden costs such as trash and dump fees or trucks stuck in traffic can cut into your profits. So you’d better make sure you have the right tools for the job when you need them.” Even with these valuable assets, Cleveland Wrecking’s collective experience may prove to be the most important factor for navigating the numerous uncertainties shrouding the U.S. economy. “Although the industrial and petrochemical markets are on the rise, the real estate downturn and Iraq War have slowed activity in many other sectors,” says Sheridan. “The diminishing volume of projects has heightened competition, leading some firms to deliberately underbid projects or tackle assignments that may be beyond their capabilities.” Sheridan goes on to say that while some project owners facing their own cost pressures may be tempted to take such chances, most clients realize demolition work requires a certain level of investment to meet safety and quality requirements. And the bigger the project, the more important and stringent those standards become. For that reason,
Sheridan adds that Cleveland Wrecking will focus on the internal factors that it can control. “Going forward, we will continue to try to improve our processes,” he says. “Our goal is to work smart, look for growth opportunities, and co-exist with the cost pressures.” He adds that the company will do nothing to compromise the safety of its people or the quality of its services. “We’re interested only in taking on the best projects in the best way, with good people and the equipment and resources they need to get the job done. That’s really the only way we know how to do things,” says Sheridan.

ON A R
World of Concrete Beats t Las Vegas’ allure as a glitzy oasis in the desert provided a fitting backdrop to the 2008 edition of World of Concrete. If only for a few days, attendees could escape the seemingly unending swirl of gloomy economic news and lose themselves in the sea of construction equipment and products that filled the Las Vegas Convention Center’s expansive exhibition halls. PDi’s US Editor Jim Parsons reports.
Yet even WOC itself was shrouded with doubts this year. With the larger ConExpo poised to occupy the same venue less than two months later, would manufacturers do little more than make a half-hearted appearance at WOC? Would attendees likewise decide that their travel budgets couldn’t support two Vegas visits in two months, and opt only for the March show? And would those who did come to WOC be buyers or merely window shoppers?
Second largest in the event’s 34-year history Any doubts as to WOC’s drawing power were dispelled with the arrival of more than 84,700 professional registrants and 1,700 exhibiting companies, making the 2008 show the second largest in the event’s 34-year history. And even though WOC 2008 couldn’t escape the economic gloom, with Ed Sullivan, Portland Cement Association’s chief economist, predicting a bleak construction market for the next three years, confidence was in ample supply from one end of the show floor to the other. “People are here to do business,” asserted CS Unitec president Tom Carroll. “The housing market may be bad, but the com-
Attention getters Predictions of a watered-down WOC also went unfulfilled with a plentiful selection of new and enhanced product offerings. That the dominant themes were ergonomics, maintenance, and efficiency came as no surprise to Patricia Stoll of Genesis Attachments. With labour shortages a more immediate concern to demolition contractors, “you have to treat operators well,” she said. “You don’t want to lose them.” Among the new products on display was EDCO’s new

mercial and infrastructure markets are fine. And, there are the higher-end projects that are always there.” Mike Ramun, sales and marketing manager for Allied Gator, was among many exhibitors pleasantly surprised at the large turnout in a ConExpo year. “For us, this Word of Concrete has been as productive as any other year,” he said Uwe Kausch of Stanley Hydraulic Tools added that professional demolition companies are faring much better than their general contractor counterparts. “They aren’t being affected,” he said. “I haven’t seen much change in demand.”

the Odds With a Big Show which is designed to work with its new FORCE4TM diamond chain. “FORCE4 TM is longer lasting and 40-percent stronger than other chains,” said spokesperson Ed Hanson. ICS also featured the new gas-powered 680GC, the result of a five-year effort to improve its predecessor model (ICS Blount’s 613) with features such as a new airflow design that reduces operating temperature by 60 ° F cooler. US Saws also took a friendly approach to core drilling with its “Core Daddy” wet coring system, which can drill up to 16-in (406 mm) diameter holes. The ability to cut large diameter holes with a right-angle corer eliminates the need for a large overhead unit, explains spokesperson Dave Morgan. “All you need is the area you need to drill,” he said.
New alliances By far, the most prolific provider of updated products at WOC 2008 was Husqvarna, which evidenced its aggressive approach to the U.S. construction and demolition market with a host of new features such as a three-speed gearbox option for the FS6600 D and FS 8400 D large flat saws. “The new gearbox increases the saw’s flexibility and allows the operator to easily match the engine speed with the size of blade required for the job,” explained spokesperson Rob Fountain. “The front cowling has also been streamlined, making the unit lighter Below ICS Blount’s Bill Vasta puts a new 680 diamond chain saw through its paces at WOC’s unusually chilly outdoor demonstration area.

TMC7 combination grinder, which features a three-position articulating frame to accommodate any wall angle, plus a multiposition handle assembly that allows operators to operate the unit in any direction. “This literally replaces four workers, as most contractors will have that many people doing edge work on their hands and knees,” said EDCO marketing director Chuck Hommey, who also showed the company’s new DS18 walk behind saw for dual-auger cutting. Constructed of stout 7-gauge steel, the unit also features a heavyduty, anti-vibration engine mount for straighter cutting. Chainsaw shoppers also had plenty to see, as Stihl, Inc., rolled out its new 12-in (305 mm) TS 410 and 14-in (356 mm)TS 420 Cutquik® cut-off machines. Both models feature a new X2 Air Filtration System that delivers near-perfect clean air to the machine, eliminating the need for filter maintenance. Better air brings many other benefits according to Stihl spokesperson Anita Gambill. “The engine runs cleaner, which increases fuel efficiency and run time by 20 %, and cuts emissions nearly in half, “she said. “Vibrations are also reduced by 43 %, which is a big plus for operators.” ICS Blount, Inc., also introduced its rugged hydraulic 880F4,

and more efficient to operate.” Also on display at the Husqvarna booth was a new line of versatile and lightweight core drill stands with a tiltable, flex-free column for angle drilling, and threaded ceiling jack for overhead support anchoring. Husqvarna was also one of many companies that used as a forum for spotlighting the past year’s corporate acquisitions, making room in its exhibit areas for the early-entry saws from Soff-Cut, International, Inc., and grinding and polishing equipment from Australia’s King Concepts, while Stanley Hydraulic Tools spotlighted its acquisition of the Cyclone drop hammer line from Universal Impact Technologies with the DH1500, which delivers a 1,500-ft lb. energy blow Two other firms promoted a technology trade. DITEQ Corporation combined its ARIX TM diamond arrangement method with green sawing technology from Cardinal Saws and Blades to debut a new line of early entry saws with the 1.5- and 4.5-hp G-TEQ, which can generate blade speeds of up to 5,400 rpm. Companies that were not showing new equipment touted enhancements. Norton Clipper’s 61-hp turbo diesel walk-behind diesel saw has been redesigned for simpler operation and servicing, and can accommodate up to a 48-inch (1.22 m) blade. Allied Construction Products beefed up the housing of its BR3088 boom hammer to consistently provide 7,000 ft-lbs of pressure in tough environments. Even with its sturdier structure, the BR3088 can be serviced in the field with common hand tools, minimizing equipment downtime. Many WOC attendees also got their first look at Brokk’s model 50 remote control demolition robot, which US sales and marketing director says is well-suited for the American market. “It has a bigger engine and larger hammer than the predecessor model 40, which many contractors felt was too small,” explained the company’s Henrik Sundgren. “They also like the electric power and remote control operation for better safety, which gets more important every year.”
“Outside of California, it doesn’t seem to be on people’s agendas,” he says, noting that the state typically sets the standard for consumer and worker protection regulations elsewhere in the U.S. “It will affect everything a contractor does—training, monitoring, and equipment.” But while companies like Delahut’s can come up with the ideas to help, “many contractors don’t seem to want to pay for them until they need it,” he said. CS UNITEC’s Carroll agreed that the dangers of dust have yet to penetrate the mentality of many contractors. “They don’t think it’s dangerous, so they’re not spending money on it,” he says. Indeed, pockets of concern could still be found amid despite WOC’s pervasive optimism. Attitudes seemed most influenced by a manufacturer’s location, product line, and customer base. Often, an exhibitor at one booth described a robust business with few concerns, while his next-door-neighbor told of slow market activity that had everybody worried. Wayne Kowalewski of Apexdia Diamond Products wondered how much of the concern was real, and how much was rumor. “The problem is that the news makes them apprehensive, whether they should be or not,” he says, nothing that his area of focus, the Northeast U.S., remains strong. “Things might get a bit tight, but the customers are still out there,” he said. Dixie Diamond product specialist Mitch Acton summed up the feelings of many in predicting that while 2008 might have slower periods, but will work out for the better. “In the meantime, you have to focus on making yourself better,” he said. “In this kind of economy, that’s the only way to survive.”
A mix of priorities

Also growing in importance is the need to protect workers from the dangers of silica dust, which may soon be subject to stricter federal exposure limits. A number of products were on display that combined protection and productivity, such as the DC 50-W wet vac from Dustcontrol USA. A built-in sump pump allows operators to vacuum and pump at the same time, while a preseparator traps up to 90 % of the dust before it reaches the filter. “That can help extend the filter’s life and improve productivity,” said spokesperson Chad King. Still, vice president/general manager of MK Diamond Products, Inc. Brian Delahaut, worried that silica safety may be taking a back seat to the economy in the minds of many contractors, even with reports of more OSHA-imposed site shutdowns.

The present Sandvik Breakers is one of the two leaders in global markets. Naturally, when we belong to Sandvik, the owner is Swedish, but since Sandvik Breakers was originally a Finnish company and today is located in Finland, we regard ourselves a Finnish manufacturer rather than a Swedish one. The same type of competition takes place in drilling machines, where Sandvik and Atlas Copco are the main rivals, but in drilling too, the Sandvik base is Finnish because it is located in Finland and used to be called Tamrock,” says Teemu Teelahti. “In breakers and demolition tools we and Atlas Copco are the two big ones and of about equal size, while Montabert and Furukawa belong to the next category. “Rammer” breakers cover most applications Over the years Ram-
mer and more recently Sandvik Breakers have developed breakerrelated products to cover almost all applications for breaking rock in construction, mining and quarrying. The current range of breakers can be installed to excavators and other carriers from 0.7 t to 100 t.
60
More specifically the breakers can be used in primary and secondary breaking, demolition and recycling, trenching and underground operations. Sandvik Breakers also designs various types of equipment for boom mounting in open-pit, crushing, underground and grizzly applications. There is a wide range of applications, since construction projects are so versatile. The prime objective of a breaker is to break boulders into smaller pieces and that is what they surely do. Breakers include five series called E, G, M, S and in. Altogether there are 47 breaker models. The demolition tools are used for various demolition and recycling projects and even for wood chipping. The product range includes cutter-crushers, pulverizers and multiprocessors and can be used to demolish reinforced concrete and scrap metal. As part of the Sandvik related integration, all the former Rammer products were given a new model designation. This was a major exercise that included many other Sandvik product lines.
Sandvik moves mountains A couple of recent applications feature how Sandvik’s breaker customers have been able to improve their operations. The first one is from Spain. A Spanish customer, Excavaciones Hermanos Otín Piedrafita, works in the Pyrenean mountains close to the French border. The conditions include seasonal snow and ice and hard rock. The company purchased a Sandvik hydraulic breaker model BR7013, which. with its weight of 7 t is the largest and most powerful in Sandvik’s Rammer range. Explaining the reason for the purchase Tirso Otín said: “Our customers are constantly seeking safer, faster and more productive solutions to meet their applications needs and we have always been willing to comply.” The customer has been involved in many major projects, such as an underground car park, an ice-skating rink, a wastewater and solid waste treatment plant and in many of the region’s ski resort development and improvement schemes. The BR7013 is designed for use with carriers weighing from 60 to 100 t. Equipped with a chisel tool, the hammer develops impact energy of 15,000 Joules. It is supplied with the Rammer CITY sound suppression system as standard, reducing noise level to only 85 dB(A) at 30 m. It is also piped for the Sandvik Rammer dust suppression package. are increased. The use of a dust proof housing, dust proof tool retaining pin locking system and the optional Ramlube automatic lubrication system also help reduce wear and extend working life.
A quarry application in Australia In the latter part of 2007, the Melbourne, Australia based Mountain View Quarries, took delivery of the second 3.8 t Sandvik BR4510 hammer for use in their Donnybrook Quarry in North Melbourne. Earlier in the year the company purchased the first BR4510. The company runs another quarry nearby called Seymour. According to quarry manager Ronnie Ferronato, the original idea was to rotate the hammer between both quarries, but it soon proved to make commercial sense to purchase the second one. “We are happy with the performance of the breaker and now we have the added advantage of having common parts across two units as well as the same company servicing them,” says Ronnie Ferronato, who also says that in addition to breakers, the company operates other Sandvik equipment, including a mobile crushing plant, a cone crusher and a drilling rig. The local Sandvik distributor, Walkers Hammers, believes strongly in after-sales support and customer training. “When we deliver a breaker it’s not a case of attaching it to the excavator and away you go,” says Walkers Hammers sales and product support manager Tino Vinella. “Prior to delivery one of our factory trained service technicians visits the site to ensure that everything will run smoothly. A breaker is a major capital investment and the customer expects long and trouble free working hours from it. The better we train the personnel the better is the end result.”
The efficient breaker quartet consists of the hammer and three gentlemen from left to right: John Miltos of Sandvik, Alex ‘Archie’ Tosto, the operator, and Tino Vinella of Walkers Hammers.

“FINALLY HCP” Husqvarna is launching its first wall saw, the WS 440 HF, which is a strong, flexible and lightweight saw that makes the work of cutting and drilling professionals both
No one can blame Husqvarna Construction Products for being mainstream. In the 1990s when purpose built wire saws became common it took a long time before HCP replaced their combi saw with a new pure wire sawing system. In the beginning of this century all manufacturers started to launch high frequency equipment but not HCP. But now is the time for HCP to set their first high frequency wall saw to the world. If WS 440 HF is as well designed as the wire saw it probably will be a success among the users.
“Based on a new technology” “With the WS 440 HF we are setting a new standard for electrical wall saws,” says Husqvarna Construction Products Product Manager Lars Gustafsson. “The saw is based on totally new technology, which gives the user increased possibilities for fast and efficient sawing. We have succeeded in optimizing the weight to power relationship and developed a saw that is light and flexible but also powerful, something that was difficult to achieve before. The powerful, water-cooled electric motor generates a total of 13 kW to the shaft, despite the fact that the saw only weighs 25 kg.”
easier and more efficient. Technical facts: WS 440 HF
The powerful, water-cooled electrical motor generates a total of 13 kW to the shaft even though the saw only weighs 25 kg. • The shaft has an electrical speed setting and can be controlled by remote control. This provides full control over the sawing process and great freedom of movement at the workplace. • Short distance between blade and rail for a straighter cut. • Safety clutch for all moving parts. • Control of water spray through change of mounting direction (twisting of the saw 180º). • By remote control, it is possible to set the blade’s rotation direction, which gives the water spray the desired direction. • Equipped with automatic brakes that stop the blade in a matter of seconds. • Delivered with four wall mounting attach ments, rail connection, oil, blade guard, saw trolley, toolkit, rail holder and frequency transformer. • Shaft power max. 13 kW • Diamond blade 800-1200 mm • Sawing depth max. 530 mm • Weight 25 kg • Frequency 400 Hz
Characteristics that improves cutting performance The saw was developed with the greatest focus on the user as possible. It has a variable speed transmission, which makes it possible to set optimal speed according to blade diameter, blade type, and the material that is being sawed. This means that the diamonds cut with a high level of efficiency. In addition, rotation direction can be selected, which means that the water spray can be controlled independent of which side of the rail you saw on. These

World’s biggest hydraulic breaker involved in the development of Oslo’s urban traffic system An Atlas Copco HB 10000 ProCare hydraulic breaker is presently involved in the development of the railway line from Sandvika via Oslo City to the Gardemoen airport. The double-track trunk line could no longer handle the increasing traffic volume to and from the new airport. The expansion to four tracks required some 71,000 m3 of rock to be removed over a distance of 900 meters. Due to the extremely high costs involved in environmental and safety aspects and because of nearby residential buildings, blasting was out of the question. Hegna Maskin from Notodden first used an Atlas Copco HB 7000, a 7 t class hydraulic breaker. The breaker is working from 7 a.m. til 6 p.m. and is removing some 1,300 m3 of rock each week. A tough and distantly jointed rock turns this into a very challenging job. The entire project is scheduled to take 11 months and the contractors were looking for ways to increase the rock breaking capacity. An HB 10000 ProCare, the world’s biggest hydraulic breaker, has now been called to the scene. With some 2,000 m3 per week this hydraulic breaker accomplishes approx. 50 % more than his “little brother“. “The HB 10000 ProCare clearly performs better than the HB 7000, which in itself is already a Hercules“, the proprietor of the contracting firm
and excavator operator Jon Erik Hegna explains. “With this breaker we are sure to be able to meet the tight schedule.“ “Another valuable asset is the Atlas Copco ProCare ™ servicing contract“, Hegna adds. “We now have a clear idea of the operating cost of our equipment and profit from the know-how of the Atlas Copco people who are planning and carrying out the service and maintenance.“ For Tom Erik Larsen, Business Line Manager of Atlas Copco Norway, too, the contract offers a lot of advantages: “We are working proactively and the service contract gives us the opportunity to plan the hydraulic breaker service in the most favourable manner. Because in the end it is in our own interest to secure maximum productivity to our customers.“ Oslo’s urban traffic system will be the subject of a marked expansion in the years to come. It is not only for environmental reasons that the municipal authorities want commuters to take the train – the capacity of the few highways leading to and from Oslo has already been exhausted a long time ago. More than 30 km of stop-andgo during rush hours is long since regarded as common. Quadrupling the railway line will allow smaller intervals between trains and will distinctly ease the strain on road traffic.

Extec C-12+ hits the tracks for Gregory Demolition A London based contractor has underlined its faith in Extec track-mounted crushers with the purchase of a new C-12+ unit to tackle the arisings from a demanding demolition project that produced 10,000 t of construction and demolition waste in just three days.
Gregory Demolition is using the 49 t Extec unit, the fourth in the company’s fleet, to process waste materials from Network Rail’s East London Line project, adjacent to Brick Lane Gregory Demolition, one of the UK’s foremost demolition contractors, has again puts its faith in Extec crushers with the purchase of a new C-12+ track-mounted mobile unit. The company, a recognised expert in highly complex bridge dismantling applications, has put the 49 t unit to work at its Barking recycling depot where it is processing arisings from the demolition of three double tunnels near London’s Brick Lane.
Jurassic Park The contract on the Liverpool Street line, known as the G19 project, required the controlled dismantling of a 3,000 m2 bridge structure. Work commenced on Christmas Eve and continued over the Christmas period. To ensure optimum operator safety and to ensure that the company met the stringent contract deadlines, Gregory utilised a large number of standard and high reach excavators equipped with a range of front-end attachments. “To give you an idea of scale, we deployed 450, six m crane mats to help protect the rail infrastructure,” says managing director Dean Gregory. “At one point, there were that many excavators working side by side that Network Rail nicknamed the site ‘Jurassic Park’ because it looked like a dinosaur feeding frenzy. Mind you, when overrun penalties run at £88,000/h, it does tend to focus the mind. I am pleased to say we finished our contract early, and came in 38% ahead of the scheduled time.”
Rapid Crushing During an intensive, four-day period, the Gregory Demolition team processed and removed around 12,000 t of mixed construction and demolition waste to its recycling facility in Barking, where it was destined to be processed by the company’s new Extec C-12+ track-mounted mobile crusher. Dean Gregory reports that
material is crushed to order and that productivity is not a major issue in this application. That said, Gregory says that he has been impressed by sheer speed of the C-12+. “It is much faster than our previous machines. It processed around 9,000 t of mixed construction and demolition waste in just two weeks,” he says. “In fact, our loading excavators have trouble keeping pace with it.” The unit is fitted with a grizzly feeder that separates fines, and rebar is pre-segregated prior to crushing, even though the C-12+ can handle steel with ease. An overband magnet separates the rebar for onward processing.
Pleasing Purchase Dean Gregory is clearly impressed with his latest Extec purchase. “Extec crushers are reliable and are ideal for demolition work. They’re rugged, well built and best of all, they are not over complicated. This makes them easy to work with and easy to train our staff to operate them,” Gregory concludes. “Obviously we looked at other crushers but we were particularly impressed with the C-12+. It’s done everything that we expected of it and more. We are extremely pleased with the purchase.”

U.S. army Corps of Engineers’ report finds no lead based paint concerns in recycling concrete
With an estimated 100 million t of concrete generated in demolition projects being recycled each year in the United States - with a relatively small percentage of its containing lead-based paint (LBP) - questions were raised regarding its suitability for reuse. A study conducted under the aegis of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has found that there is no environmental or health risk to workers involved in the crushing and recycling of concrete containing LBP as long as they follow certain lead compliance work protocols. A free copy of this study is now available from the National Demolition Association. The study, developed by Principal Investigator Stephen D. Cosper of the Construction Engineering Research Laboratory, deals with the demolition of family housing at Fort Ord, USA, which is typical of the older Army building stock, much of which is being demolished. The report is entitled “LBP Concerns in producing Recycled Concrete Aggregate from former Fort Ord Family Housing.” The so-called Cosper Report attempts to correlate the concentration of lead on the painted buildings to the concentration of lead in aggregate produced from those buildings’ demolition. The final concentration is the key metric in determining suitable end use. In the case of Fort Ord housing, the final lead concentration was found to be quite low. The work site was assessed in several ways, including several weeks of worker observation, including monitoring of demolition contractor dust control procedures, worker practices, and analytical evaluation of samples collected during actual demolition and concrete recycling. The Cosper Report was funded by the Construction Materials Recycling Association and the National Demolition Association. The Construction Engineering Research Laboratory is an element of the U.S. Army Research and Development Centre, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. To obtain a free copy of the report, contact National Demolition Association through its website www. demolitionassociation.com.
