In mid April the trade shows Intermat and the first edition of World of Concrete Europe will be held at the Paris-Nord Villepinte exhibition centre. About 30 Swedes from the Swedish Concrete Cutting Association will attend the show and in connection with Intermat the International Association of Concrete Drillers and Sawers will hold its annual meeting at the Hotel Ampere on 23 April. Last time Intermat was organized in 2012 there were 1,350 exhibitors companies and well over 200,000 visitors. I understand there are more exhibitors this time and many visitors are expected. Hall 7 is where there will be a number of new and interesting products.

EDA Words from the EDA President

Beyond breaking What is demolition? How would you define the industry? If these two questions are asked of demolition contractors or suppliers to the industry, the answers might be surprisingly different, according to the specialty of each company. But if asked outside the industry, the answers will be much simpler. They will usually be something about the breaking part.

The European Demolition Association is very active in Brussels with EU Institutions and many other related trades, associations and groups of interest. When talking with these related organizations, the first challenge of the EDA is to explain what the industry is about.

This is not an easy task, as every company does its work using its own style, and there are even some differences in the way demolition is approached depending on the country. For this reason the EDA is working to produce a simple, easy to understand and easy to agree procedure about the demolition industry.

One thing is certain, we go beyond the breaking part. Of course, we have many tools for breaking things and dismantling buildings and structures, such as carriers, many types of machines and attachments, as well as a plethora of related equipment from dust suppression to waste management and recycling.

The reality is that demolition keeps getting more and more complex, with multiple methods to do the same work depending on several circumstances.

But also, demolition includes several other activities that need to happen at the same time, such as decontamination of hazardous waste, waste sorting and management and recycling on or off site.

This message has to get through, because as we only focus on the breaking part, when talking with related organizations, they also simplify our role.

BlueMac plans for the future Recycling equipment manufacturer BlueMac has announced that in 2015, the company will develop new offices at their 7,300m² manufacturing facility. Alongside this will be a recruitment campaign to ensure that the optimum in quality engineering and support personnel can be maintained, as the planned and rational

growth programme develops over the coming months. BlueMac is enthusiastic about its plans and said that it is confident that the company has found a formula for success and that plans for the factory will allow growth to be maintained and new plant and equipment to be developed and added to its range.

New arrivals at Atlas Copco Pumps Atlas Copco Portable Energy has appointed two new product marketing managers and a new research and development manager to support the expansion of its pump business.

Ola Hällgren is now responsible for the development and marketing of electrical pumps and Joakim Cronstrand will oversee diesel pumps. Martin Lindskog is the new research and development manager.

With the three new managers, Atlas Copco Portable Energy has the structure in place to support the growth of its pump business. This organizational expansion follows the appointment of Per Rehn as vice president for business development pumps in 2014.

Ola Hällgren Ola Hällgren has 15 years of experience working in the pump industry, primarily focused on the construction and mining industry.

Most recently he was based in the US as a product, application and business development manager for a global pump company.

Joakim Cronstrand Joakim Cronstrand has extensive experience in the pump industry. His previous roles include business development manager, marketing manager and managing director for a global pump company.

Martin Lindskog Martin Lindskog has spent 15 years focusing on pumps for the construction and mining industry. He has previously worked as a design engineer, a product manager and technical manager for construction and mining pumps for a global pump company.

Deutz consolidates China operations The German engine manufacturer Deutz has agreed with its partner Volvo not to proceed with their proposed Deutz Engine (China) joint venture. When it reported its most recent quarterly financial results in November 2014, Deutz announced that both companies would be conducting a strategic reassessment of the joint venture. They have now agreed that this production company should be wound up given the weak prevailing market situation in China. The joint venture has not made any substantial investments.

Nonetheless, Deutz is still convinced of the Chinese market’s long-term potential. “It remains our stated objective to use Chinese production facilities in order to meet local demand from Volvo and other target customers and, to this end, we will be focusing on our Deutz Dalian Engine joint venture,” said Deutz board of management chairman Dr Helmut Leube.

Since 2007 Deutz and the First Automotive Works Group, one of China’s leading vehicle manufacturers, have been running the Deutz (Dalian) Engine joint venture in Dalian, China, where three to eight-litre diesel engines are manufactured primarily for the Chinese market.

Liebherr powers Kamaz Dakar Rally winning trucks This year’s Dakar Rally, through Argentina, Bolivia and Chile, was a great success for the Russian Kamaz Master truck racing team. They entered four trucks and came first, second, third and also fifth in the Rally.

The Kamaz team also came first in the Africa Eco Race, which took place at the same time. All trucks were equipped with Liebherr 8-cylinder D9508 A7 diesel engines specifically developed to produce a top speed of 140km/h during the race. “Success in racing depends not only on the performance of the engine, but the probability of failure and repair times,” said Kamaz racing team technical director Wladimir Guba. “Here, we place trust in the engines from Liebherr that have proven their worth in similar extreme conditions, above all in mining.”

Scotland’s construction industry looking brighter Scotland’s economy is showing continued signs of growth, and as a result, so is its construction industry. From July 2013 to July 2014, Scotland held 11% of the value of contracts awarded in Great Britain, making it the third highest in the country after London and the south west of England. The value of Scottish contracts accumulated to £6.8bn (€9.25bn ), highlighting the future prospects within the industry.

Several new projects are under way such as the Aberdeen Western Peripheral route, easing the high levels of traffic congestion in the North East region. “Over the next three decades, our investment in the Aberdeen Western Peripheral Route project is expected to bring in an additional £6 billion to the local economy and create around 14,000 new jobs,” said Transport Minister, Keith Brown in an interview for the Evening Express.

High levels of investment and return are present within Scotland’s current projects, strengthening the outlook of the country’s construction industry. The current €884M Edinburgh Glasgow Improvements Programme, aims to improve Scotland’s railway structure.

The project will provide significant economic, social and environmental benefits for Scotland. “Rail travel in Scotland is more popular now than ever before and the network is set to benefit from over €5.44bn of investment during the next five years,” said High Network Rail route managing director David Dickson.

Further investments are underway within the Scottish Government’s Help To Buy scheme, assisting individuals with the process of home buying. The Scottish Government said that a strong and growing house-building industry is key to Scotland’s future economic prosperity.

The Construction Monitor reported a

record high figure of promise within the construction industry. Over 55% of respondents stated they were more confident about the next 12 months in comparison to 42.1% in the previous quarter, the highest figure since 2008.

10M Euro turnover The Italian company Idrobase Group filed an annual return marked by global investments to open new branches and to lay the foundations of a new development. The group turnover was over 10M Euro, 75% of which came from exports.

2014 was a year of strong investments all over the world for Idrobase. Ten years after the opening of the branch in Ningbo, China, Idrobase has opened a new company in Bangalore, India and a production facility in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, with the aim of developing business in emerging markets.

During 2014, Idrobase introduced new products within its traditional core business, such as high-pressure washers, spare parts and accessories, industrial and civil misting systems. Latin American Concrete Cutting & Demolition Forum postponed “It has been quite a sad decision to postpone Latin American Concrete Cutting & Demolition as we have received a very good response for the Forum from our larger clients in Professional Demolition Americas and Professional Demolition International,” said PDi editor-in-chief Jan Hermansson.

“But we feel at this stage that we need more time to penetrate and sell the Forum in the Latin American market. We don’t want to risk that too few Latin American contractors and also potential distributors will show up at the Forum making the quality of the audience too weak. There are too many other events going on in Brazil and the rest of Latin America this year that would disturb the planning of the Forum.

Latin America is also a young market for our

sectors and the market changes quickly and is quite whimsical, in particularly in Brazil at present. This whole situation weakens the purchasing power and maybe would result in potential participants choosing not attending the Forum.”

Over the last twelve months the South American the Latin American Concrete Cutting & Demolition Forum 2015 has been vigorously promoted in the trade magazines PDa and PDi. “Having worked, for over 15 years, with publishing trade magazines PDi and PDa, about professional concrete cutting, demolition, recycling, concrete floor grinding and other related activities, we know that the South American markets have great potential. Our plan was to stage the event

on 1-2 October 2015, in Rio de Janeiro,” said Hermansson.

The organisers of the Forum, Riverbends Publishing, in joint venture with S.C.O.P. have now decided to postpone the event one year to take place during the autumn of 2016. The reason for this decision is based primarily on two things: 1. To promote this type of event towards a fairly young industry sector is more time consuming in terms of the sales effort. We feel that with another year, we have an even better chance to anchor the Forum among several more industry associations in all of the South American countries, as well as among more contractors.

2. The second reason for the postponement of the Forum is that two construction-

related trade fairs will be held in Brazil during 2015 with accompanying seminars. Also Conexpo Latin America will be organized in the end of October in Santiago, Chile.

Although the South American market as a whole and also locally shows a strong expansion over the time in the areas that the Forum covers, South America is still a young market that is denoted by sharp fluctuations in the economy. The organisers therefore wish to arrange the Forum in a year with less interference from other industry events. Besides moving the Forum to autumn 2016 the venue will also be moved from Rio de Janeiro to São Paulo. The exact date and location of the venue will be announced shortly on the Forum website.

Montabert makes changes at Intermat At lntermat Montabert will incorporate the Blue Line range into its own product range, under the Montabert brand and will swap their traditional blue colour for Montabert green.

To identify these breakers, as part of the Montabert range, the Blue Line will now be marketed with branding very similar to the existing hydraulic breaker ranges. The Blue Line, launched in 2009, currently consists

of five nitrogen chamber type breakers designed for use with 10t to 40t carriers.

Like other Montabert rock breakers, the Blue Line were designed, developed and produced at the plant in St Priest, France.

New Hilti breaker wins gold Newly launched Hilti products took home a gold award, as well as four other prizes at this year’s iF Design Awards held in Munich, Germany.

Several new Hilti tools received the coveted design award. The international jury of experts were impressed with the new generation of the Hilti TE 1000-AVR breaker, giving it a gold award as the best product in its category. One standout characteristic of the revised version of the tool is HiDrive Technology, developed by Hilti.

This delivers up to 50% greater demolition performance with the lowest vibration in its class of 5m/s2. Lower vibrations allow users to work with the tool for an even

longer period. Other awards were handed out to a direct fastening tool, a cordless drill driver, a rotating laser and a cordless impact wrench.

The jury evaluated the submissions according to design and ergonomic qualities as well as on the topics of innovation degree, safety, functionality and product quality. This year’s competition drew around 5,000 products from more than 50 countries.

“We are very happy that the interplay of form and function not only generates enthusiasm among our customers but also was able to withstand the critical scrutiny of the design jury,” said Hilti chief designer Stephan Niehaus.

In 2014, the French breaker manufacturer, Montabert began the process of obtaining technical certification for its distribution network. This certification focuses on workshop organization and technician training.

Komatsu’s 40t articulated dump truck comes to Europe

Cobra sheds its skin Atlas Copco has introduced its 2015 range of Cobra PROe and TTe petrol breakers. The percussion mechanism delivers engine power with minimum losses to the tool tip, resulting in impact energy of 60J in the PRO version and 40J in the TT model. Both are now available with 25mm x 108mm shank sizes. This new shank size makes the Cobras shorter and lighter, and vibrations are minimised even further.

“Customers can perform better when they use a machine that fits their needs, especially in situations where every centimetre counts. Using the right size for every operation helps the operator get more done in less time,” said Atlas Copco product line manager Oleg Korobotchkine.

The redesigned Cobra PROe and TTe have up to 10% less vibrations than earlier models. “Using a handheld breaker for long periods can be exhausting for the operator. But thanks to the improved Atlas Copco hand-arm protection system, operators can work longer and stay well within limits of recommended health and safety standards,” said Korobotchkine. “And as it can now run on alkylate petrol, operator exposure to harmful exhausts is significantly lower as well as the environmental footprint.”

Cobra PROe is ideal for breaking, asphalt cutting and post driving. With 60J at the tool tip it can break silica rich rocks and reinforced concrete.

Cobra TTe has the most optimum punch for tie tamping. With 40J at the tool tip, confirmed by customers in the industry, the TTe delivers enough high energy to push the ballast back under the ties and low enough to prevent the pulverization of ballast.

The Cobra system is a standard choice for many utilities around the world when the access to sites is limited.

By offering more power and a greater variety of sizes, the 2015 Cobra system aims to make it even easier for civil and rescue workers to conduct construction tasks or save lives in every situation.

Komatsu Europe International in Belgium has introduced the HM400-5 articulated dump truck to the European market, following its initial presentation at the last Conexpo in 2014.The HM400-5 is powered by a 353kW Komatsu SAA6D140E-7 engine that is EU Stage IV emissions certified.

It has a maximum payload of 40t and a heaped body capacity of 24m³. Loading height of the body is 3.164m, and the two

single-staged body lift cylinders provide a 70° dump angle.

Selectable working modes allow the operator to choose between economy and power modes to tailor machine performance to the application or working conditions. The truck has Komatsu’s traction control system for automatic and optimum traction in soft ground conditions.

Case to launch new crawler excavators at Intermat Case Construction Equipment is launching its new generation D Series crawler excavators at the Intermat exhibition in Paris in April. The four new models, ranging from 25t to 40t operating weight, run a Tier 4 Final (Stage IV) engine and introduce new features and upgrades. The new D Series offers high productivity, comfort and safety combined with low running costs.

The new D Series crawler excavators feature the proven Case intelligent hydraulic system. The new electronically controlled hydraulic pumps and larger main valve further boost the new generation’s productivity.

They improve the machine’s responsiveness, resulting in cycle times up to 12% faster than the previous generation’s. They provide a breakout force up to 6% higher than the C Series and they increase the models’ lifting power.

In addition, the CX370D features two bigger pumps compared to the model it replaces, with a maximum flow of 2x300litres/minute.

The D Series strengthens the Case leadership in fuel efficiency, which is up to 8% higher than the previous generation’s as a result of the engine technology and the improved hydraulics.

The new models comply with Case’s SCR solution, which does not requires a diesel particulate filter or regeneration, resulting in maximum uptime and lower operating costs.

The large AdBlue tank and low additive consumption result in outstanding autonomy, as the AdBlue tank only needs to be refilled every five refuelling stops, so that Case customers will be able to work longer hours without pause.

The pressurized cab with cushioning system ensures low noise and vibration levels, providing an operating environment among the quietest in the D Series’ class. The spacious cab and the fully adjustable workstation, with optional heated air-ride seat, create an ideal working environment. The large widescreen monitor accommodates a continuous camera view and all the performance data the operator needs. The cab meets ROPS and fops LEVEL II safety standards.

Daily service points are easily accessible and reached safely with the standard handrails. The friction created between the surface and a diamond tool when grinding concrete, stone and terrazzo floors, leads to heat generation, which affects quality and performance. If temperatures are too high, there is a risk of glazing and a reduction in tool performance, resulting in loss of efficiency and higher costs.

Core drilling is the most widespread and common technique of the concrete sawing industry. It is also one of the most fiercely competitive sectors, with dozens of manufacturers fighting incessantly for a bigger market share. Andrei Bushmarin reports.

2014 was a difficult yet eventful year for the concrete drilling industry. With some markets declining rapidly and unexpectedly, the players had to use all their resourcefulness to offset the damage. Market trouble notwithstanding, the industry saw some interesting launches, particularly in the high-frequency area.

Weka forges ahead with a new HF motor The German company Weka launched its high-frequency motor HD16. Weighing 6.2kg, the HD16 boasts power of 3.7kW. Specifically designed for tough applications, this three-speed model comes in a fully metal casing. The motor is controlled by a Weka compact frequency converter FU4 or FU6. Equipped with a cooling water system, it has the protection class IP55, which allows overhead drilling without any further precautions.

An excellent tool for hand-held jobs, the HD16 can also be used with a drill stand.

Hakken Consec features automatic feeding system From Japan Hakken Consec, based in Hiroshima, has developed an automatic feeding system for core drilling machines called EHAC-80Ai. The main highlight of this RoHS and CE-certified system is the concrete steel reinforcement sensing function. Special rebar sensing software shuts off the drilling rig once the core bit touches reinforcement. This function has been built in the feeding system for earthquake strengthening applications when the rebar must be kept intact. Another distinctive feature is the possibility to choose from 13 drilling load settings, depending on the job requirements.

Dry coring system from Baier Tools Another German manufacturer Baier Tools, which focuses on developing drilling and sawing solutions for contractors working at nuclear power plants, presented its tried and tested BDB 825 system for dry coring of reinforced concrete structures. To achieve maximum productivity, the manufacturer recommends using the BDB 825 together with Baier’s Titanium core bit and vacuum cleaner BSS 506.

According to Baier Tools, the system has proved itself many times on the most challenging jobs, including drilling holes in an industrial stack at the height of 200m. Although primarily designed for concrete coring application, the BDB 825 can also be used on other materials, such as natural stone.

The range’s highlights include a LED motor-load monitoring system, a USB data retrieval option, which shows operating hours and motor load, protective brackets around the motor housing, also serving as handles, and wheels for easy transportation. The pulse electronic motor protection system alerts the operator of an approaching motor overload by varying the speede up to six times before shutdown.

Seven LEDs help the operator maintain optimum bit feed pressure, thus preventing the motor from overloading and increasing drilling performance. All Karat machines come equipped with drill motors with a three-speed gearbox.

On top of it, the foundation contained horizontal rebar at regular intervals, which could only be avoided by drilling at an angle. The CEG-PDT1 pivoting head from Pentruder made it possible to set up the system for drilling at an angle in a quick and efficient manner.

Prior to trying the pivoting head, the operators drilled right through rebar, with the core bit only lasting to drill one 600mm deep hole. With the Pentruder pivoting head, rebar was avoided, and the core bit lasted from six to 12 holes. The machine used was the Pentruder MDU core drill – NTGRA with a high-speed spindle unit.

Efficient dust dampening in Trento In January one of WLP dust suppression guns was used for the demolition of an historical building in the city centre of Trento, Italy. The demolition company chose a WLP 700 Pack to satisfy the job requirements due to the dimensions of the building, which was 45m long, 14m wide and 8m high. The building was situated at the crossroads of two main roads and all possible annoyance from dust and noise had to be avoided during three day demolition process.

The WLP 700 Pack proved to be the right machine to perform the job, having a throwing distance of up to 70m and being supplied with the automatic rotation from 0° to 340° and with the automatic

inclination from -20° to +45°. This allowed the demolition contractor to perform the work without an additional operator to control the gun.

WLP strives to satisfy customers’ requirements and during the last Ecomondo exhibition the company presented the new range of dust and odour suppression systems called Demolitor, comprising two new models Demolitor 40 and Demolitor 50.

The R900 stood out because of its potential as a valuable investment for the company’s future.

The new Rockster R900 impact crusher is working for MCS at Winstone Aggregates Whitehall Quarry on the outskirts of Cambridge. I did a lot of homework on the Rockster before we bought it,? said Maunder. I looked at it from every angle and I was really impressed, not only by its basic operating capacities but also by the flexibility of the unit’s design.

In addition to our work for Winstones, we also work for the Department of Conservation, building access roads, helipads and other infrastructure in some pretty remote and difficult to get to terrain.

Logistically this sort of work can prove challenging. We’ve had situations in the past where we’ve been crushing 100mm aggregate into 40mm product

and have needed to get a jaw, cone and screen into the bush, incurring thousands of dollars in transportation fees in the process. The R900 is very much an all in one unit, so Rockster’s technology will help mitigate this level of expense for us, as well as the need to tie up a large portion of our machine fleet in one location.

Maunder was impressed by the R900’s ability to convert from an impact crusher to a jaw inside of a few hours.

Change the screen size and the screen box and you’re away, said Maunder. This really is fantastic technology and very intuitive to use. MCS crusher operator Brandon Faulkner at Whitehall Quarry agrees. I’ve not had anything to do with a Rockster plant before, but it?s really easy to set changes. I’ve come from the old style of crushing where everything is done with a spanner; undoing the toggle bolts and springs, cranking it forward and then locking it back up. Until recently it has been a very manual process, but the R900 is all-hydraulic.

It really is as easy as pushing a button. You can even adjust the settings while the machine is running, which is pretty amazing, said Faulkner.

ROBI DOES A MONT BLANC OF A JOB Southern France is not just about alpine skiing, fine wines and exquisite cuisine. This part of the country is as industrially developed, as it is beautiful. Hidden among the picturesque slopes and gorges of Rhône-Alpes, there is a unique production site in Francin where plasterboard containing gypsum is recycled daily. The site is operated by local contractor Nantet Locabennes, which has a track record in recycling dating back to the late 1980s. Nantet Locabennes has an extensive inventory of recycling equipment, which includes the Robi MM 234 screening bucket.

An innovative recycler Nantet Locabennes is part of the Serfim Recycling Group, specialising in the management of all kinds of hazardous and non-hazardous construction waste.

However, it also possesses a very special knowhow that makes it stand out among the competitors. Plasterboards are fed into a processing plant, where, after several operations, including crushing and screening, purified gypsum is recovered. This purified material is then sent to a plasterboard manufacturing plant, where it is mixed with quarried gypsum. This is the technology that Nantet Locabennes now employs at the production site in Francin.

High up in the French Alps, near Mont Blanc, recycling specialist Nantet Locabennes is using a Robi MM 234 screening bucket from Ramtec to process up to 25t/h of plasterboard. Andrei Bushmarin visited the site together with Ramtec sales and marketing director Benjami Pitkäsalo.

Intermat served its purpose For manufacturers of industrial machinery, the key to success in foreign markets lies in finding the right dealers. Robi Multimaster: a jack-of-all-trades Ramtec’s Multimasters screening buckets are capable of processing a large variety of materials, and are equally useful on demolition and recycling projects. On the Francin site, the Robi MM 234 is used for the two main tasks of screening plasterboards, which it does at the rate of up to 25t/h, and to downsize pieces of concrete walls. Since being deployed last summer, the screening bucket has clocked up 1,000h. Nantet Locabennes is extremely satisfied with the bucket’s output and reliability, and is now looking to buy a few more models through Ramtec’s French dealer Escomel.

HITCH YOUR TOOL UP!

For owners of excavators and loaders, performance is the main concern. To achieve high productivity, the machine and the work tool need to be seamlessly synchronized. And this is a small and deceptively simple device called a quick coupler or a quick hitch that makes them click. PDi’s Andrei Bushmarin reviews the latest quick coupling systems.

There are three main types of quick hitches used on construction machinery: manual, semi-automatic and fully automatic.

If the former two are very common, the fully automatic couplers are still a rather exotic product. But whatever the type, operational safety is what concerns manufacturers most at present. Due to a number of accidents, some even fatal, the European Union EN474 standard and the ISO/DIS-13031 best practices ruling have been considerably toughened.

Corimag enters the quick coupler business Corimag, based in Italy, has diversified into the quick coupler segment with its own system Tacà Fort. With a 30 year track record in the attachment business, Corimag is best known for its high-quality chisels for hydraulic breakers, so quick hitches represent a new chapter in the company’s history.

Compact and lightweight, the Tacà Fort features a doublewedge shape and a hydraulic block for fully automatic operation.

In compliance with the latest regulations, Corimag’s patented release system ensures that the attachment can only be released on the ground in a safe manner. It is also complete with a mechanical protection system to prevent an unintentional release of the attachment. The compact design leads to higher breakout force, while a wide contact surface prevents the occurrence of slack in the system.

The Tacá Fort system is available in three versions for 1t to 40t carrier machines and also for heavier machines on request.

These are the mechanical Alpha, the mechanical with hydraulic locking Naos and the fully automatic Polaris.

Klac Industrie - a quick hitch expert from France Klac Industrie, based in France, is a quick hitch specialist established in Orleans in September 2000. The company focuses on manufacturing quick coupling systems for up to 24t excavators.

Designed for 8t to 24t excavators, it is distinguished by high operational safety, which exceeds current standards.

Thanks to an angle detector, it is impossible to unlock the device in a dangerous position, while an integrated safety system protects hydraulic hoses and electrical cables during the rotation of the bucket. Another innovation from Klac Industrie is the mechanical quick hitch Alternatic, which the company launched onto the French market in 2013.

Variolock - Lehnhoff’s signature coupler The German company Lehnhoff Hartstahl is one of the trendsetters in the quick coupling industry. The company manufactures all known types of quick couplers, but its signature product is the fully automatic system Variolock. Modeled on the proven Lehmatic mechanism, Variolock is available for 2t to 130t excavators. According to Lehnhoff, a Variolock is capable of doing 2,000h/year under high loads without a malfunction.

Another benefit is reduced energy consumption.

Thanks to the fully hydraulic circuit and the energy coupling system, featuring an innovative valve clamping technology, the tool changeover is controlled from the cab, with all functions of the tool being available immediately after.

Cat launches pin grabber coupler and fusion coupler system The Cat pin grabber coupler for excavators meets the new stringent safety standards. Designed for Cat 311 to 349 D, E and F Series excavators, the coupler is compatible with Cat buckets and other most popular brands. Being up to 10% lighter that its predecessor, the coupler features a short-profile

design that reduces the distance from the stick mounting pin to the bucket cutting edge for added digging power, greater fill ratios and fuel conservation. A debris shield, covering the top of the coupler, helps ensure proper coupler operation and reduce maintenance. Another maintenance reducing feature is a central greasing block located on the side of the coupler.

A wedge-lock system maintains constant hydraulic pressure on the wedge, so it is the coupler frame, rather than the activating cylinder, that absorbs most of the force, which results in higher durability. In compliance with the new safety regulations, the coupler maintains tool position in the event of a pressure loss, with the operator being able to verify this from the cab.

Also new from Cat is the Fusion Coupler System for H and K series loaders. The system combines the reliability of a pin-on device with the flexibility of a quick coupler. Integrated into a loader’s arms, it serves to increase its lifting capacity by bringing the centre of gravity closer to the machine. An advanced wedging mechanism creates a tight rattle-free connection with no play or wear. The Fusion system is compatible with all types of buckets, which makes it a universal solution for any job application.

QPU system from Mantovanibenne The QPU is a universal quick coupling system from the Italian attachment specialist Mantovanibenne. Capable of picking up attachments with different pin centre distances, the QPU is a universal system. It is available in mechanical or hydraulic version. An optional electric-hydraulic kit makes it possible for the operator to control the process of tool changeover from the carrier machine’s cab. Supplied with a cast or assembled body, it is suitable for most existing types of excavators. The QPU also features an auto-blocking safety system, with the securing hook keeping the attachment in place even in the case of incorrect hanging of the rear pin.

Trevi Benne adds the B-Lock The Italian manufacturer Trevi Benne has also extended its range with a hydraulic quick coupler complying with the European standard EN474. Called the B-Lock, it features a safety system preventing detachment or displacement of the work tool in case of malfunction of the main pins’ locking mechanisms.

The quick coupler’s highlights include mechanical locking of the front and rear pins, automatic release of the locks and full visibility of the changeover process from the cab.

Geith’s tilting coupler and new control system The new Geith tilting coupler, suitable for 6t to 25t excavators, benefits from the two proven technologies of the PowerTilt from Helac and the Geith Quick Coupler. Thanks to the tilting feature of up to 180°, less repositioning of the excavator is required, which results in higher productivity. The operator can safely change attachments from the comfort of the cab.

The coupler provides both a front and rear safety locking mechanism to secure both attachment pins. The variable pin centre design allows easy pick up and change of any type of attachments while the Geith patented curl to release control system ensures the attachment is only released in a safe position. Currently the Geith Tilting Coupler is only available in the EMEA markets.

Also new from Geith is a quick coupler control system.

With its simple and safe operating sequence, this IP65 and CE compliant device meets the present and developing safety requirements of ISO 13031. The new control box, mounting bracket and wiring harness are supplied as standard in all full hydraulic hose kits. One of the system’s highlights is a bypass operation, which allows the operator to remove particular attachments, such as pallet forks, without having to curl in the coupler to release the attachment.

Dynaset’s Blue Hydraulics product line has contributed to a 7% growth in turnover in 2014, the company claims. The new product line covers 17 products and a large number of technical innovations for existing Dynaset equipment.

Komatsu’s new 47t class hydraulic excavator Komatsu Europe International has introduced the PC490/ LC-11 hydraulic excavator to the European market. It has an operating weight between 46.5t and 48.9t and is powered

by Komatsu’s EU Stage IV engine of 270kW. “This new excavator does so much more than simply meet EU Stage IV emission regulations,” said Komatsu product manager Vince Porteous. “It offers significant advances in fuel consumption, provides 3G communications, improves operator comfort and includes new safety features.” It uses AdBlue additive to reduce NOx emissions and a variable geometry turbocharger and an exhaust gas recirculation valve for temperature and air management control.

The PC490/LC-11 has a heavy-duty undercarriage and retains the same lift capacity and lateral stability as the previous model. The operator can select the lift mode, to raise hydraulic pressure and increase lifting force by up to 7%.

The hydraulic system has been upgraded to reduce hydraulic loss and improve efficiency. All major components on the new PC490/LC-11 have been designed and produced

by Komatsu. This integrated design uses a closed centre load sensing hydraulic system that takes hydraulic efficiency to the next level using variable speed matching technology.

Variable speed matching allows the engine speed to adjust based on the hydraulic pump output for both light and heavy-duty applications.

The excavator is equipped with the Komatsu equipment management monitoring system, which gives operators, and technicians greater monitoring and troubleshooting capabilities. The device continuously monitors all critical systems, preventative maintenance, and provides trouble-shooting assistance to minimize diagnosis and repair time.

The PC490/LC-11 is equipped with the latest Komtrax remote monitoring technology with data access through the web or through Komtrax Mobile or Smartphone. Komtrax is further enhanced to monitor AdBlue levels, diesel particulate filter regeneration and provide fuel theft alerts, through 3G telecommunication. A new operator identification system reports key operating information for multiple operators.

WILLspringtime INTERMAT BRING to the European construction sector?

Intermat has been criticised in the past for being too French.

But this year’s show at Paris-Nord Villepinte should be different.

It is a far bigger as the exhibition will include a European version of the US trade show World of Concrete.

This year’s Intermat is expected to be bigger then the previous show three years ago, with more exhibitors and visitors. This expectation is due to a European version of the popular US exhibition World of Concrete being staged within Intermat. The presence of World of Concrete Europe has attracted some manufacturers that do note normally exhibit at Intermat, especially equipment related to concrete sawing and drilling and concrete floor grinding and polishing.

Intermat, held at the Paris-Nord Villepinte exhibition centre, has traditionally been one of the biggest

shows for heavy construction machinery in Europe besides Bauma, which is the world’s largest. During the last decade most of the pan-European shows have experienced a decreasing trend, except Bauma, which has continued to grow. Intermat has been criticised for being too French and less international.

However, a few of the larger companies, such as Caterpillar and JCB have decided not to exhibit. Intermat, Cisma, Seimat, French construction trade associations and Comexposium, held a press event where about 90 manufacturers previewed new products to be displayed at Intermat. The event also included a gala dinner where the winners of the Intermat Innovations Award were revealed.

At World of Concrete Europe, the concrete industry will congregate in Paris as part of the forthcoming Intermat trade show. New dust extractor for floor grinders A close partnership between HTC and users of the HTC 80 iD dust extractor has resulted in a second generation of the machine with eight enhanced capabilities.

The biggest improvement to the HTC 80 iD II is its new duck bill valve made of a rubber material. The valve increases the efficiency of dust removal from the cyclones and protects the Longopac bag from possible damage by conventional hatches.

Quick-Release Manifold Bracket For Dust Suppression Dust Control Technology has introduced a quick-release manifold bracket to fit all fan-driven models of DustBoss atomized mist dust suppression equipment. The bracket allows removal and replacement of the manifold in about five minutes, with no tools required.

The stainless steel bracket and pin mounting system secures the manifold in position, allowing maintenance personnel to remove and replace quickly for routine cleaning or other service. The new bracket can be retrofitted to any of DCT’s existing fan-driven designs. Customers can order one mounting kit to fit DustBoss models DB-45, DB-60 or DB-100. The smaller DB-30 incorporates a different stud size and pattern, requiring its own mounting kit. Both kits feature the pin mounting system with no-tool removal. The pin is permanently fixed to a lanyard.

Initially developed in response to customer input, the design is expected to find use among customers wanting to avoid work stoppages and maximize process time. “The nozzles are one of the critical elements of atomized mist technology,” said DCT sales representative Carl Harr. “No

matter what water source is used for dust suppression, it’s going to contain minerals and other dissolved solids, which build up on a microscopic level until eventually the accumulation will interfere with droplet production.”

Depending on the type of accumulation which accrues, customers have used wire brushes, lime-dissolving products and even sonic cleaners to remove build-up. Some choose to have a spare manifold on hand for each DustBoss machine, while others stock just one. “As long as you have one extra, you can rotate it into service at your discretion,” said Harr.

“You can plug in the new one and take the one that was in service back to the shop for cleaning. Once the nozzles have been cleaned, it can be installed on another machine to permit cleaning of that manifold, and so on.”

With worker safety foremost in the minds of customers, the new design is already gaining popularity. One customer said that it makes changing the manifold a quick job and can switch them out every three months and inspect and clean as needed. Having a spare manifold on hand enables quick replacement on schedule, rather than being forcd to do it.

Montabert’s Anti-Seismic BRV system Montabert has taken part in the Intermat 2015 innovation awards, presenting its Anti-­‐seismic BRV system designed to promote environmental safety.

The patent applied Montage innovation is an electronic system intended to regulate a rock breaker’s power according to the vibrations generated. Using sensors placed in sensitive areas, the system is designed to temper the rock breaker’s power, based on the guidelines provided by the

contractor, and in a transparent manner for the user.

Clients typically have to use a laboratory that measures seismic velocities, thus generating additional financial and organizational costs. This Anti-­‐seismic BRV system can eliminate these costs. It also allows the operator to optimize the environmental safety/productivity ratio. The accessible power range is equivalent to that of three rock breakers.

Atlas Copco’s new industrial generators Atlas Copco has launched its new QIS range of industrial generators and the first models to be introduced under the Gesan line. It targets a wide variety of industries including data centres, healthcare, utilities, manufacturing, retail and recreation, telecommunications, public works and governments, and transportation. The full QIS range will be shown at Middle East Electricity in Dubai in March 2015.

To meet the widest range of power needs, the 50Hz QIS comes in 18 models. The smallest is currently the QIS 65 (60kVA/48kW prime power; 66kVA/53kW standby); the smaller QIS 10 will complete the range in March 2015. The largest is the QIS 830 (752kVA/601kW prime; 830kVA/664kW standby). The 60Hz unit is also offered in 18 sizes, from the QIS 60 (70kVA/56kW prime power; 77kVA/62kW standby) to the QIS 740 (849kVA/67 kW prime; 925kVA/740kW standby).

High performing scalping solution In response to customers, Sandvik Construction Mobile Crushers and Screens has refreshed the flagship QE440 scalper with the QE441 as the latest addition to the Premium range of scalping screens.

EmiControls dust solution for a quarry The quarry La Pedicara had serious problems with dust pollution and turned to Italian manufacturer of dust suppression solution EmiControls After a visit to the quarry a EmiControls’ technician propose two V12S to be installed on a 4,5 meters lift, on a certain height.

The V12S are automatic dust suppression units and are also silenced.

The units are also equipped with special motors that works with 2 speeds: 1500 rpm with 63 dbA at 20 meters which has a throw distance of 45/50 meters and 1000 rpm with 60 dbA at 20 meters which has a throw distance of 30/35 meters.

Practically these units allow the user to select the throw range and the water quantity, depending from the dust you have to abate.

On the inner head there are 30 ceramic nozzles, they never close and the head is divided into two hydraulic circuits. The operator can select 12 or 18 nozzles or can work with all the 30 nozzles together.

This is very important as the user can save a lot of water by always selecting the correct water flow, depending from the dust to abate.

EmiControls can install nozzles that can work with 16 liters/minute and using all the 30 nozzles the user can reach 80-100 liters/minute.

The EmiControls turbines produce a fine mist that binds dust more effectively than previously used “C hoses” at the quarry and thereby using significantly less water. In addition, the very fine mist reduces the unpleasant production of saturated muddy ground conditions. With the old system the client could not select less water consumption and the dimensions of the droplets is really relevant and this also is a limit in dust binding.

Using 2 dust controllers V12S – the client can cover all the surface of the park using less water and having dust under control. The 2 V12S also have a timer function, so the client can also select automatically the working time and the pause period. The necessary requirements for the 2 units are the following: • fInlet pressure 2bar • for each unit you need a 50kW generator or equivalent energy (connection plug 32A x 5).

Other possible options The EmiControls technician realized that part of the quarry is constantly changing and hence the machines have to be mobile. So if the client were to use such machines, he will need a truck, a driver, a mobile generator, a water tank supply, etc. EmiControls has also delivered three V22,

always on metallic frame and with the electrical cabinet already completed of the connections to a 15kW pump plus submergible pump, to a big quarry. That client has also installed them on trailers, completed of tank and generator.

The V22 can cover big areas and due to the eletrovannes the operator can always select the water quantity to use for each dust problem.

V22 a silent workmate The V22 high-power 18,5 kW turbine is designed to reach the highest possible fine water flow. Thanks to the Quadrijet ® technology and thanks to the outer nozzles ring, the V22 can create a very fine water mist already at a low pressure of 8 – 10 bar. This reduces fuel consumption and increases the reliability of the system.

The intrinsically shaped blades of the turbine was obtained using computer simulations and increases the efficiency of the turbine by 30% (compared to the previous model and the same shaft power).

Superior performances As with the previous models, the patented nozzle head is located centrally inside the turbine. In addition, the performance of the turbine is increased by an additional outer nozzle ring where “quadrijet” nozzles are mounted.

This increases the performance and efficiency of the turbine also at a low water pressure.

All nozzles have ceramic inserts and are highly resistant to wear from contaminated water. The atomized water mist is so fine that it remains in the atmosphere for a long while and can reach a distance of 70 meters.The all new valve technology we have developed, gives greater control in optimizing the droplet size, this guarantees optimal performance in all weather conditions. The 18kW high-performance turbine and 360° rotation allows a maximum operating radius. The vertical tilting angle is also selectable from 0 to 45°. The V22 is not only versatile it is very efficient and environmentally friendly too. The V22 due the power of the turbine and to the dimension of its cone, is able to put in the atmosphere a netto air flow of 16m3/s, without considering the additional air involved in the process.

FOR CONCRETE INSPECTION Ground penetrating radar technology is increasingly becoming a useful tool for demolition contractors to mark a suitable cutting or drilling location, such as a wall or floor prior to per-forming cutting and coring work. K50 concrete screw - the first product Before starting up a core drilling system, it must first be fixed properly on to a wall or the ground. So Fidan’s first product was a special anchor for core drilling rigs. The patented concrete screw K50 represented a new generation of anchors with a combination thread. Designed to cut itself into the concrete, it did not require using wall plugs. We will rock the industry this year Despite the political and economic turmoil in Europe and never-ending price war in the concrete sawing industry, SSB Fidan is very upbeat about this year’s prospects. 2014 was a relatively uneventful year for the scrap processing industry. The trendsetters were busy fine tuning their existing products and consolidating their market positions. But good news is that scrap shears are becoming staple products for demolition attachment suppliers, so the number of players in this sector is steadily growing. Andrei Bushmarin reports.

Mantovanibenne’s soaring Eagle With a 50 year track record Italian manufacturer Mantovanibenne is one of the scrap industry’s trendsetters. Its latest series of fully rotating scrap shears called SH Eagle II fit 4t to 200t excavators. According to the manufacturer, the new series is steadily winning hearts and minds of users, particularly in the US, which is probably, the world’s biggest market for this kind of tool. The Eagle shears feature a number of improvements on their forerunners, including a speed valve, rhomboid shaped blades, a bolt-on piercing tip, a double guide for the moving jaw and larger cylinders. All shears offer 360° continuous rotation, and the models weighing over 7t come complete with the company’s patented Manto-Autolube greasing system.

Cat launches two models for big excavators Cat Work Tools have extended its scrap shears line with two new models designed for large excavators. The Cat S365C and S385C mobile shears for scrap processing and demolition applications boast robust design and bolt on piercing for increased piercing performance and easy field servicing. With jaw openings of 845mm and 880mm respectively, the S365C and the S385C share the features of the B Series, such as fast cycle times, high cutting

capability along the entire jaw length and 360° rotation. Rotar sets the bar high

Hydraram unveils a car dismantler

For Netherlands-based Rotar, scrap processing is a vital business. Rotar’s latest RSS-series of scrap shears consists of six models ranging in operating weight from 2.5t to 12.5t. All models come as standard with four-way indexable cutting blades and a hydraulic cylinder with an integrated speed valve. Large diameter hydraulic pipes, hoses and bores in other components of the shears serve to reduce back pressure and lower resistance in the hydraulic circuit. This results in increased cutting force and quick cycle times.

Another Dutch supplier Hydraram has launched a scrap shear tailored to car dismantling applications. Weighing in at 1.8t, the new HCD shear features a clamp arm, a 360° rotation mechanism and exchangeable cutting jaws.

Fitting 20t to 28t excavators, the shear has a maximum opening width of 600mm and delivers a crushing force of 56t.

Recycler uses atomized dust suppression Reclaimed Aggregates, a leading west coast recycler of asphalt and concrete, has employed an atomized mist dust suppression system to control air quality in and around its Chula Vista plant in southern California.

Reclaimed Aggregates, a subsidiary of Pavement Recycling Systems operates one of the largest pavement salvage and reclaimed asphalt pavement production facilities in the region. By upgrading the dust suppression from a sprinkler system to a DustBoss DB-45, operators report a substantial air quality improvement in the material receiving area.

Dozens of dump trucks per day deliver recovered pavement from projects all over the San Diego area to the Chula Vista site. Material is offloaded onto a receiving area and moved by front loader to the crusher or into stock piles. “The offloading process creates a tremendous amount of dust, and that was causing issues for our neighbours who run large vehicle salvage lots,” said Reclaimed Aggregates facilities manager Robert Erautt.

“At first, we tried to reduce the amount of dust with a

sprinkler system. It just saturated the material, creating a lot of mud, but the dust still remained an issue.”

Company officials reviewed the options and discovered the DustBoss series of suppression equipment from Dust Control Technology. They chose the DB-45, as the unit is able to throw its atomized plume 46m to deliver effective dust control over a 1,115m2 area. When equipped with optional 359° oscillation, the design can cover as much as 16,875m2 from a single location.

“The DustBoss made an immediate impact,” said Erautt. “On hot dry days, which we get a lot of around here, a little breeze can carry dust a long way. We just turn on the atomizer and you can see the mist pull the dust out of the air. The unit is on a metal carriage, so we can adjust its position if the wind changes, but generally it stays in one place. We leave the machine running most of the day if it isn’t raining. We haven’t had a single call from our neighbours about dust from the day we added it.”

The DB-45 delivers a dense curtain of water droplets atomized to a 50-200 micron size range, which creates the greatest attraction to most dust particles.

“The size range is critical to avoid the slipstream effect that large droplets from sprinklers have on airborne dust particles,” said DCT president Laura Stiverson.

“In most applications, fugitive particles are generally around 50-100 microns in size, but water droplets from a sprinkler are much larger, often 2000 to 6000 microns.

The velocity of the large sprinkler droplet affects the airflow, and when an airborne particle approaches it,

the flow often deflects the particle without a collision between dust and droplet.”

In addition to cold milling, pavement preservation and soil stabilization, Pavement Recycling Systems also provides cold in-place recycling. The process involves a train of several different machines, which together handle the milling of existing asphalt pavement. The milled material is removed and added to a crusher with its own integrated dust suppression, which reduces the material to a 25mm minus aggregate. The aggregate is transferred to a machine that mixes the material with an asphalt-based emulsified recycling agent in an engineered mix design. The cold recycled asphalt is installed, compacted to specific depths and then overlaid with a thin layer of virgin asphalt. Sometimes asphalt slurry can be spread over the recycled asphalt as a preservation tool.

“A road project can involve thousands of truck loads carrying asphalt out and bringing material in, causing a lot of dust and traffic,” said Erautt. “The cold in-situ recycling process only requires the engineered emulsion to be shipped in, reducing truck traffic 40:1 and lowering the carbon footprint of most projects by about 70%-80%.

In addition, the work is done faster, the cost of the process plummets and the finished product is just as good. Our goal is to reduce as much material going into landfills as possible. Recycling material is just good business, but it shouldn’t come at the expense of air quality. At our processing centres or out on site, a clean and efficient operation that includes dust control keeps the community and clients happy. It’s good for everyone in the end.”

MARALD-MARSEL SELECTS DSB INNOCRUSH Marald-Marsel is a well-established road building company in Slovenia that operates its own gravel quarry where the extracted material is processed on-site. The company needed a mobile crusher and conducted an evaluation of available products suitable for their operation and opted for the dsb Innocrush 35.

EXPERIENCE Handheld tools increasingly expand their range of advantages and applications. PDi’s Jim Parsons reports.

Handheld demolition tools may not have the size of their larger carrier-mounted cousins, but there are nevertheless big expectations. Perhaps it is because there is a closer connection between the tool and its user.

Whatever the tool does and how it does it is right there, with no additional level of machinery, connectivity, or complexity to affect how the tool operates.

This closer connection also makes operator comfort more important, particularly in an age where ergonomics, stress injuries, and fatigue have led manufacturers to invest as much research and development time into fine-tuning handle shapes and dampening vibration, as in motor size and efficiency. These factors not only affect a contractor’s current employees, but also those they hope to hire in the future. Try selling young people on a construction or demolition job with the prospect

of having to spend hour after hour struggling with hard to use tools. A job elsewhere may pay less, but they will not go to bed aching every night.

Because of its inherent portability and accessibility, a handheld tool will be expected to perform on demand anytime, anywhere. Naturally, small jobs are where a handheld tool would be expected to shine. But there may also be situations that preclude the use of a larger or carrier mounted tool.

A handheld tool’s versatility allows it to go to virtually any location where cutting, sawing, drilling, or hammering must be performed. And given the effort that might be necessary to get it there, the tool had better be productive.

The good news is most of the current handheld demolition tools not only live up to these standards,

they shatter any assumptions about their limits. Indeed, many of the products covered in this feature are taking advantage of the latest energy storage and efficiency technology to extend operating time, thus helping contractors get more work done without compromising the expectations of power, performance, and comfort.

Of course, a handheld tool can only be expected to do so much before something with more power is in order. But given the continuing cycle of improvements and upgrades in this product sector, contractors may continue to be surprised at what these smaller sized tools can do.

Stihl introduces world’s first battery-powered cut-off machine The recent World of Concrete show saw the introduc-

tion of the new battery powered TSA 230 Stihl Cutquik cut-off machine. With zero-exhaust emissions, the TSA 230 enables indoor cutting in enclosed spaces and other sites where users are not permitted to use traditional diesel or petrol powered cut-off machines. Wet cutting is made easier with onboard water connection and control, which suppresses dust. Dry cutting in dust sensitive areas is aided by an available depth guide with vacuum adapter.

“The groundbreaking lithium-ion-powered Stihl TSA 230 enables professionals to complete a variety of tasks with one lightweight machine,” said Stihl product manager Dan Pherson. “Quick start, excellent balance, and portability make it easy to use.”

The new machine is powered by a brushless, high torque electric motor, creating little noise. Low vibration and lightweight design help reduce operator fatigue and increase manoeuvrability, while providing the power needed to perform construction jobs.

An addition to the family of Stihl Battery KombiSystem products, the TSA 230 joins a line of tools, which utilize the advanced 36V lithium-ion battery system. This first of its kind tool eliminates the need for fuel, saving users money and minimizing required maintenance.

The breakthrough battery technology provides operators with up to 15min of quality and high performance with no gradual drop in power. The re-charge rate is quick, especially with the optional rapid charger.

Husqvarna expands Prime product line with K 6500 chainsaw Husqvarna’s K 6500 Chainsaw manages deep and narrow cuts, as well as square corners. Weighing 9.1kg, the power cutter is perfect to use by itself, or as a complement to wall sawing to avoid overcutting at corners.

The K 6500 works on both single and 3-phase power, as well as with the Husqvarna PP 65 and PP 220 power packs. LEDs help the operator work with optimum power, and provide an alert if there is a risk of motor overload. With three bar lengths to choose from, 300mm, 350mm, and 400 mm, users can cut to a maximum depth of 450 mm.

Apart from being efficient and lightweight, K 6500 Chain also embodies the other characteristics from the products of the Prime range, a powerful electric motor, no stiff hydraulic hoses, low vibrations, and excellent ergonomics.

New saws from ICS and Pentruder At WOC, ICS debuted its new 701A pneumatic chain saw, which can produce 4.5kW at 6.2bar. Available in North America, the saw will soon be certified for sale in Europe. In addition, a new high-frequency saw with a 635mm guide bar is expected later this year under the Pentruder brand.

Hilti’s new cordless drill driver The new Hilti Cordless drill driver SF 10W-A18 is the first cordless tool to deliver corded performance and reliability for high-torque and high-speed applications.

In high-torque applications, like 102mm hole saw drilling in wood or metal, this 18V drill driver performs as if it were corded. Four speeds gives users more options to improve drilling performance, allowing them

to shift into high gear and punch 305mm holes through multiple layers of plywood.

With its high-efficiency motor, all-metal gears and high torque, this tool can drill holes through wood as fast as a corded version, making extension cords a thing of the past.

These tools are built to withstand tough conditions and are covered by the Hilti Lifetime Service, which provides wear and tear coverage for tools, lithium-ion batteries, and charger for two years or three years on fleet management. This includes an unlimited number of battery replacements for these periods.

Bosch’s Power Ready wireless charging system Another industry first for stand-alone power tools has been achieved with the introduction of the Bosch power ready wireless charging system. Wireless charging technology meets user convenience in an 18V system that powers tools virtually anywhere eliminating the need to keep a supply of batteries on hand.

This advance is based on the concept of contactless energy transfer, also known as inductive charging. When the charger is plugged in and the compatible battery is placed on it, the charger begins wirelessly transmitting an alternating magnetic field. The battery, featuring an internal copper coil, acts as a receiver. As the alternating magnetic field penetrates the coil, voltage is induced and a charging current flows to the cells until full. Similar to conventional charging, the battery and charger are in constant communication during the charge process to ensure proper charge and a long battery life.

Each charger also features foreign object detection, which detects when any other object, besides the compatible battery, is on the charging pad. If sensed, the charger will not turn on until removed. FOD prevents conductive materials, such as bolts, washers, nails, or even metal shavings that might inadvertently fall on the pad from heating up. The process is similar to heating coils on an electric stove.

The components of the Bosch power ready wireless charging system include the WCBAT612, a SlimPack 18V, 2.0Ah battery that combines the advantages of wireless charging with Bosch battery technology. This battery has a charge level indicator and is equipped with Bosch CoolPack technology, which improves heat dissipation and extends battery life twice as long over packs without it. The Bosch HD18-2 two-speed hammer drill is a powerful drilling machine and is just as fast as competitive options that weigh more than its 2.6kg. The drill offers high torque and high speed to meet the widest range of applications in concrete, masonry, wood and metal.

Eiche forges ahead with breakt diamond technology Despite being in the diamond tooling business since 1981, the company Klaus Eiche has kept a low profile. There was a good reason for that: private label manufacturing that accounted for the lion’s share of its turnover. But if you have a real know-how in your possession, sooner or later you would want the world to know about it. Andrei Bushmarin visited Eiche’s plant in Denzlingen, Germany.

Manufacturing of diamond tools is a technology-intensive process, which requires in-depth knowledge of industrial diamonds’ behaviour. That said, knowledge is a prerequisite, but not sufficient by itself. Usually it takes months of trial and error to become a run-of-the-mill manufacturer with a competitive product. However, if you really want to be ahead of the pack, you need a breakthrough technology that it would take years for others to copy.

The originator A born innovator, Klaus Eiche learnt the secrets of the trade while working as a production manager for another German manufacturer of diamond consumables.

Passionate about technology and, particularly, about the conception of a fully automated manufacturing facility, he wanted to see his ideas implemented. In 1981, he quit his employment and established his company Klaus Eiche. Invention and innovation were always at the core of his philosophy. Almost every machine at the original factory in Denzlingen was developed by Eiche.

The company was also among the first few to pioneer the production of laser-welded diamond blades in Germany.

Winoa Group moving in After two decades, Klaus Eiche built up a reputation

of a reliable OEM partner. In the early 2000s, its manufacturing expertise and capabilities attracted the attention of Grenoble-based Winoa group. One of the world’s leading suppliers of gang saws for stone cutting, Winoa was interested in strengthening its position in construction. Having already bought French manufacturer Samedia in the 1990s, the group all but cornered the domestic market. By taking over Klaus Eiche in

2003, Winoa gained access to Europe’s biggest market and to Klaus Eiche’s vast database of OEM customers while simultaneously acquiring a highly automated and streamlined production plant. Four years later, it added Belgium-based Carbodiam and Ultradia to its list construction assets. With these four units onboard, the group could effectively target every strata of the diamond consumables market, from private label customers to retail buyers to professional sawing and drilling contractors.

Ark Capital buys out Winoa’s construction assets Within the group, each manufacturing unit had its specialisation. While Klaus Eiche focused on production of laser-welded blades, ranging from 115mm to 1.2m in diameter and small-sized grinding wheels, Samedia specialised in making core bits, silver-brazed blades for wet cutting and big grinding wheels. Belgian Carbodiam targeted professional contractors with up to 2.5m silver-brazed blades, core bits and special products like calibrating tools for refractory bricks. When the 2008 recession struck, Winoa was affected by it as much as anybody else in the industry. It was during that time that Nicolas Vermeulen was appointed as the

group’s managing director. His task was to navigate the company through the downturn and to mitigate its consequences. Having successfully risen to the challenge, he later became instrumental in preparing the buyout of Winoa’s construction assets by Dublin-based Ark Capital group in April 2013.

EFT: Eiche Forging Technology The idea of using the forging process to manufacture diamond tools was originally conceived by Samedia engineers in France back in the early 2000s. However, it was not until Dr. Uwe Neidhardt and his team at Klaus Eiche took over the project that the idea really started to shape out. It took them about five years of research and development to adopt the forging process for serial production of diamond tools at Denzlingen plant. Called Eiche Forging Technology, it boasted a number of advantages over the conventional sintering process used by most manufacturers.

Due to the extremely high pressure during forging, the segment bond gets very dense and almost free of pores, particularly in the welding area. This results in higher resistance of the segments to possible rupture, which means a higher level of operational safety. When tested against the standard sintering process, EFT showed a 50% to 100% increase in lifespan of the tool and a 20% to 50% increase in cutting speed, depending on the type of concrete or asphalt being cut.

Another benefit of EFT is the possibility to make segments with different geometry, for instance,

trapeze-shaped segments. This geometry helps to cut down on hand-arm vibration in the hand-held cutting mode, significantly reducing operator fatigue.

Having protected the EFT by the global patent, the German manufacturer is certain that it would take competitors at least ten years to come up with a similar process. Eiche diamond tools made by EFT are marketed worldwide under the registered brand name of SHOXX.

Made in Germany Eiche’s Denzlingen facility is the epitome of what a modern factory should look like. Sprawled across the area of 3,500m2, the ISO 9001 certified plant is spotlessly clean, environmentally friendly and fully automated. With the daily output of 70,000 segments and 4,000 diamond blades, it only takes about 20 people to control the manufacturing process. Apart from the trademark laser welded forged diamond blades, the factory also produces conventional sintered segments, grinding wheels and core bits. Its total portfolio of diamond consumables currently accounts for 6,000 specifications. With 53 employees, the company supplies its products to 64 countries and the list keeps growing. An active member of the Federation of European Producers of Abrasives, Association for the Safety of Abrasives and the German Abrasives Association, Klaus Eiche aims to stay at the forefront of innovation in the diamond tooling industry.

INDIA, NO ROARING LION That India carries the symbol of a lion was perhaps created to respect and to keep intruders away. But with the new Prime Minister Narendra Modi the message is different. India is now welcoming other countries and foreign companies to invest in the now booming industry under the slogan ‘Make in India.’ Also the concrete sawing and drilling industry is getting its share of the positive trends in the country that once was under British administration. PDi’s Jan Hermansson reports.

During the autumn of 2014 PDi was a guest of Tyrolit to report on India’s concrete sawing and drilling industry and also learn about the demolition industry.

I landed in the National Capital Region, which includes Delhi and the neighbouring cities Noida and Gurgaon. India and in particular the NCR region and Mumbai are boiling with activity. An important motor for the NCR region is the Delhi Metro Railway Corporation Project. The construction of the Metro started in 1998 and is divided into four phases. The first two are complete. The third is ongoing and the fourth will start in 2017. For the NCR the DMRC is very important for numerous other construction projects going on along and close to the metro lines.

A lot of satellite cities with high-rise apartment buildings have already been built and many more are projected for the next 10 years. It is a golden age for India, which is developing rapidly in certain regions.

The number of new companies is increasing fast and the stock exchange is booming.

Strongest growth in modern time Everything has accelerated since Narendra Modi became Prime Minister in May 2014. The country is experiencing a complete change, which is boosting business for everybody.

“Ache din aane wala hai”, or ”Good days are yet to come” was the slogan that Modi used for the BJP during his election campaign. Judging from that there are still good things to come for India. The BJP party won the election with about 80% of the votes. The election in India is every five years and Modi has said that he needs two years to repair damage from the previous adminstration and another three years to grow. Inflation in the country is currently about 5% to 6%.

Many of the people met said that what the country needs is to solve its problems with development and thought that Modi has proved to be the right person to stimulate growth. The top priority sectors in his politics are education, health, water and roads. He is also opening up the boarders like no other Prime

Minister before him, welcoming other nations to invest in India. For instance China is investing €93.7bn and Japan about €32.8bn.

‘Make in India’ is the BJP and Modi slogan to attract foreign manufacturers to settle in India offering easy set up and less bureaucratic procedures. India is currently experiencing a brisk pace of foreign manufacturers settling in both the NCR and Mumbai regions.

Increased production means more employment, better infrastructure, housing and increased consumption. The average GDP for India last year was 5.7 and is believed will increase to 6.5 by 2019.

The concrete cutting industry in India The construction sector is very important and in 2014 its value was estimated to about €147bn and is expected to increase to €170.5bn by 2019. The value of the construction equipment sector in India is estimated at €4.7bn and expected to increase to €5.6bn by 2019.

The Delhi metro projet started in 1998 and is divided in four phases. The first two are done, phase three are currently in process and phase four will start 2017.

The Indian professional concrete sawing and drilling market was considered to be worth around €24M in 2013. With India’s rapid growth this is expected to increase by 10% to 15% in 2014. The core drilling method is dominating the Indian concrete sawing and drilling industry and accounts for about 35% of market turnover. Wall sawing and wire sawing is dividing equally a quarter of the total market. Floor sawing occupies about 15% to 16% and the remaining 16% is divided between dry cutting, handsaws, table saws and floor grinding. Concrete floor grinding is a very small sector in India and estimated to be only 2-3% of the total market. About 75% of the market is dominated by four different methods. They have great growth potential and also dry cutting is a sector that has potential

and is starting to grow. The estimate for controlled dismantling services is expected to increase by 5%/ year between 2014 and 2019 from €24.3M to €26.2M. It is difficult to estimate the number of concrete sawing and drilling contractors in India. It appears there are thousands of one-man operated companies offering core drilling services. They carry the core drill system on their backs and drive to clients on mopeds. The professional concrete cutting contractors are estimated to be between 350 to 500 companies. Most are working in the bigger cities where most of the infra structure and housing projects are. The number of employees for each company varies from 10 to over 100.

A concrete cutter employed by a contractor has a certain position as he normally is trained to operate a wall saw or a wire saw. Core drilling operators are normally self taught, as there are so many in India. A concrete cutter makes about €150 to €220/month. A manager makes between €460 to €620/month. The rates for concrete cutting services are quite different from the western world. Flat sawing for instance is charged at between €77 to €92/m2, wall sawing between €130 to €155/m2 and wire sawing about €155 to €170/ m2. Labour is very inexpensive in India compared to the western world and when it comes to core drilling the charge is very low and the competition extremely tough.

The taste of Tyrolit in India In a colourful country like India, Austrian manufacturer Tyrolit has put a flavour of professionalism in the concrete sawing and drilling market.

One of those companies is Tyrolit, which has had its own subsidiary in India since 2005, with head office in Delhi and branch offices in Mumbai and Bangalore.

The company is representing two out four divsions, Metal Precision and Construction. Around 30 people work in the Construction division. Tyrolit has a clear strategy to strengthen its position in the market in the next five years.

Tyrolit India construction division marketing manager Davinder Singh Sehra has been spot on with the positive construction development in the country ever since things started to move. “In 2005 when Tyrolit settled in India it was some tough years to build up a foothold in such a diversified market as India still is. But

15% in 2014 and is expected to do the same for 2015 and 2016. The strategy to reach the target includes several objectives. Sehra said that one important thing is to increase the number of service centres. Tyrolit currently has two, one in Delhi and another in Mumbai, and the goal is to have six more in the foreseeable future in order to cover the whole country. Also the number of distributors will be increased significantly. In Delhi the service centre takes care of service, repair and delivery of machines, parts and tools.

Increased focus on construction trade

Tyrolit wants to grow within the professional sector and is also putting a strong emphasis on construction trade products as part of the company’s new strategy. So far hydraulic concrete cutting equipment is dominating in the professional sector. But Tyrolit India’s MEP specialist Amit Chowdary thinks that high frequency equipment is the future for India, even though it will take time to implement. “I think high cycle equipment will have great potential in India in the long run, but so far I think contractors trust hydraulics more, as they

are easier to maintain and repair. The supply of electricity is another factor that sometimes can be unstable depending on the project. In that case it is still safer with hydraulics,” said Chowdary.

Another issue, which professional manufacturers in India, like Hilti, Tyrolit, Husqvarna, Bosch and Hitachi are up against, is the very tough price competition and the prices vary a lot between different brands and types of machines. The only way to convince clients to buy a more expensive machine is to prove it is far more efficient, so the production rate is increased and that it is safer with less maintenance and repair costs.

Cluster of high-rise apartment complexes The Delhi Metro started in 1998 and has is a very important project for the whole National Capital Region creating thousands of jobs, not only in itself, but also through projects built in direct or indirect relation to the Metro links. Tyrolit’s equipment and tools are used in worksites along the links, but also in numerous housing and business complexes in Delhi, particularly in the neighbouring NCR cities of Noida and Gurgaon.

Concrete cutting in the same area for years Along Sohna Road in Gurgaon at the Central Park II apartment building project, the contractor Pioneer Construction is using a Tyrolit Hydrostress FZ-4S wall saw to cut openings in the wall of a parking house beneath the building. The openings are then equipped with extra steel support beams to increase the stability of the building and to access different parts of the parking area.

About 240m2 of openings will be cut to a depth of 300mm. Four people are working on the project. The Central Park II apartment house is one of 29 buildings standing in a cluster. Each building is on average about 20 to 30 stories high and is a common sight around Delhi. Pioneer Construction owner Dharamveer Yadav said they do a lot of concrete sawing and drilling and also demolition with crushers and bursters from Tyrolit. The company has been working with

this project since 2012 and has been carrying out concrete cutting in all of the 29 high-rise buildings, and there is a lot more work to come.

“We have been using all sorts of methods. In some of the buildings we did quite a lot of crushing and bursting with Tyrolit Hydrostress equipment and we have also been wire sawing quite a lot when we have been dismantling parts that have been constructed incorrectly,” said Yadav.

Pioneer Construction was Tyrolit’s first customer in India and the relation dates back to 2005. The company has 45 employees and works all over India. Besides working in the building and infrastructure sectors Pioneer also carries out jobs at cement and hydro power plants around the country.

Yadav said that before he entered the concrete cutting sector he was selling automobile parts. “I realized that concrete cutting was a lot more profitable so it was easy to change,” said Yadav. Since the start of the company business has increased by about 25% each year. During the first two years, turnover doubled and the prospect is very good. Yadav is very satisfied with the Tyrolit equipment and said that it mostly works without any interruption or trouble. The support from the service centres is the best and added that the company would also like to get in to using remotely controlled demolition robots as he sees a need for this equipment in India.

To get to a worksite in the NCR area is time consuming, mainly because of the traffic. Tyrolit area sales manager Lakshay Bali is used to the Delhi traffic and knows that it sometimes is a day’s work to get from the office to see just one client, even within the NCR.

More high-rise clusters When visiting the Delhi area it is essential to visit one of the wonders of the world, the Taj Mahal in the province of Uttar Pradesh. It is about a four hour drive from Delhi to Taj Mahal and is mostly on a privately owned highway opened in 2013. This is the currently the best highway in India and made of concrete. When it was built Ty-

rolit floor saws where used on the project. The Indian construction company, Jaypee Construction Company, owns the highway and tolls will continue until the construction cost, including profit is recovered. Afterwards it will be free and the ownership and maintenance responsibility transferred to the government. So far this is the only way new highways are built in India, first as a private project then moved to government control.

On route to the Taj Mahal is a huge construction project in Greater Noida south east of Delhi. A large housing project called Supertech Upcountry of highrise buildings and villas is being built by contractor Jena Construction adjacent to the motorway. About 24 tower blocks, each with 27 floors, is being built together with 320 villas. All kinds of concrete sawing and drilling are carried out on this project, dominated by core drilling. About 30 to 40 holes are drilled each day and the average drill depth is about 450mm. The diameter varies quite a lot but is normally between 102mm and 182mm. It is estimated that about 10,000 holes will be drilled in total of which 6,000 will be in the villa section of the project.

The project started five years ago and will continue for another six to seven years before completion and is just one among many similar schemes ongoing in Greater Noida. The construction situation is about the same as in Gurgaon, the only difference is that it is more remote then in Gurgaon, and the distances between the building clusters are greater.

Currently there are about 30 people working with concrete sawing and drilling on the project, but the total number of employees on the whole scheme is unknown.

In India it is common that whole families are hired to work on a project and the families live with their children on the worksite. It is also common to see women working in the construction sector.

This year’s second issue of PDi will carry a similar article about the Mumbai region that is completely different from the NCR.

Transmin switches to Atlas Copco The Australian bulk materials handling specialist Transmin, has switched to Atlas Copco for the supply of all hydraulic breakers. Transmin is a leading manufacturer of rock breakers and hydraulic boom systems used in mining operations and sources all breakers through its sister company Breakers & Attachments Equipment Group.

JOH. SAHLER CHANGES TO HITACHI German contractor Joh. Sahler has changed its entire fleet of construction machinery to Hitachi Zaxis excavators.

The two ZX38U-5s, ZX48U-3, ZX85USBLC-5, ZX145W-3, ZX170W-5 and ZX190W-3 were supplied by the country’s Hitachi dealer, Kiesel.

The new machines are supported by a five-year maintenance and service package provided by Hitachi Support Chain and managed by Kiesel. Matthias says, “Kiesel contacted us at exactly the right time at the end of 2013, when we first considered changing all of our machines,” said Joh. Sahler director Matthias Schindler. “We wanted to buy established products that our customers would recognise and feel comfortable with. These machines need to be reliable and work well for at least five years, and so that is why we have invested in the after-sales package. This aspect is

THERE THEY GO AGAIN World of Concrete overflows with optimism. PDi’s Jim Parsons reports.

Boasting its largest turnout in six years, the recent World of Concrete show in Las Vegas, celebrated everything good about the construction industry, particularly the generally healthy US economy that experts feel has sufficient staying power to last through 2016 and perhaps beyond.

The final numbers were gratifying for the show’s organizers. The event drew nearly 56,000 visitors, up from just over 48,000 in 2014, a year when ConEXPO competed for concrete companies’ travel budgets.

Approximately 1,460 exhibitors occupied more than 62,709m2 of space at the Las Vegas Convention Center, also up 15% from 2014.

Impressive as those figures are, though, they could have been larger. “A lot of people we regularly see every year didn’t come because they are too busy,” said Ruwac USA sales executive Eric Potorski. “For many people, 2014 was a record year.”

That was certainly the case for Hilti USA, which enjoyed its fourth consecutive year of double-digit growth according to Hilti North America president Cary Evert, who added that the company wants to keep that streak going. As part of the relocation of the company’s corporate office from Tulsa to Dallas, Hilti is adding a new test centre to support a planned 80% increase in research and development. “We will roll out

more products in the next three years than in the last 10,” said Evert. “The focus will be on making equipment simpler, easy-to-use, and smarter. We’re also making use of mechatronics to boost the productivity of what are already good drills.”

Hilt’s typically expansive display at WOC included the updated TE 1000-AVR breaker with HiDrive technology that helps deliver 25.8J of impact energy.

For precision work, a power reduction switch can dial back that power by as much as 30%. An SR motor helps ensure stable performance with power fluctuations from generators or extension cords, while a three-chamber sealing principle extends the tool’s life and dependability.

The TE 1000-AVR and other Hilti breakers can be matched with a TE-SP wave chisel, a new-wave design that reduces friction between the chisel body and base material, increasing speed by up to 30%. The chisel also leaves a wider opening for debris removal, and reduces the likelihood of the chisel sticking or breaking.

Hilti also displayed its new DST 10-CA wall saw system with cut assist technology, which is an electronic assistant that automatically adjusts the saw while making cuts. Operators can monitor the DST 10-CA’s cutting depth in real time from a display in a remote control unit.

Husqvarna Construction Products contributed with a number of new products and one of the major innovations was that the Prime concept is complete with a new low weight high cycle chainsaw K 6500 CHAIN. The saw has a cutting depth of 454 mm. Husqvarna also launched a new and stable drill stand, DS 900, for drilling with really large diameters. Another innovation was the new remote controlled floor grinder PG 820 RC that you can read about below. Husqvarna also showed three new accessory packages for demolition robot DXR range. Other news for the US market was the floor grinders PG 450, PG 400 and PG280 and the new dust extractor DC 1600. Further Husqvarna also showed the new floor saws FS 7000 and FS 6800 also the power cutters K 970 RING, K 970 Chain, K 970 Rescue and K 970. Also the new diamond tool series Vari-Cut for power cutters and small floor saws were displayed.

Also displaying upgraded breakers was Chicago Pneumatic, which has transformed its CP 1230 and CP 1240 pneumatic models into the CP 1260 and CP 1290, with ergonomically designed handles to reduce operator fatigue; a streamlined, flatter profile for improved operator visibility; and new durable polyurethane front head springs that reduce wear and extend the life of the breaker and its internal components. For bigger breaking applications, Atlas Copco debuted its new three-model Essential line for carriers in the 2.2t to 13t weight classes. The compact breakers offer better visibility and easy manoeuvrability in tight spaces. A built-in tap for compressed air keeps water out of the case should the unit be submerged, while another tap allows water to be channelled directly to the chisel to keep dust down.

Kicking tyres, taking test drives As is custom at WOC, the Convention Center’s central hall served as a massive showroom for motorized construction equipment. Punctuating the displays were some new models, such as Kubota’s SSV-Series skid steer loaders, including the 48kW SSV65 and the 55kW SSV75. Both are powered by an EPA Tier 4 certified four-cylinder Kubota diesel engine, and feature standard two-speed travel and optional high-flow hydraulics.

The SSV65 has a rated operating capacity of 884kg and bucket breakout force of 2.19t. The SSV75 has a

rated operating capacity of 1.2t and bucket breakout force of 2.7t. Two other models will be added to the SSV-Series next year.

Also joining the pool of Tier 4 Final machines is Caterpillar’s new M-Series small wheel loaders, the 926M, the 930M, and the 938M. All three are powered by a new Cat C7.1 ACERT engine with a clean emissions module designed to require no operator intervention or disrupt work cycles. Though larger than the plants found in the M-Series predecessor models, the engines offer a 35% improvement in fuel consumption when in standard operating mode.

Nearby, Bobcat showed the new T450 compact track loader with a 45.5kW Tier 4 Final engine and a body width of only 1.42m when paired with a bucket. A two-speed drive system gives the T450 a maximum speed of 11.7km/h in low range, and 17.7km/h in high range.

Bobcat also introduced its 10.rkW zero tail swing E20 compact excavator, also with a Tier 4-compliant motor. The E20 has a maximum reach of 1.2m, dig depth of 2.6m, and dump height of 2.7m. A fully retractable rubber track undercarriage can narrow the E20’s overall width from 1.36m to 991mm.

While larger machines look to reduce emissions of their motors, manufacturers of smaller concrete cutting tools are seeking alternative power sources. Stihl introduced the world’s first battery-powered cut-off saw, the TSA 230 Cutquik. Weighing approximately 3kg less than a comparable gas-powered saw, the TSA 230 runs on a 36V lithium-ion battery pack and includes a built-in water connection for wet cutting. It accepts a 229mm cutting wheel for a maximum cut depth of 70mm. A single charge provides 15min of full cutting time, with a charging cycle of as little as 25min.

“With two batteries and a quick charger, you can run all day,” said Stihl dealer services manager Dan Hall. “The TSA 230 is designed mainly for small cuts with minimal rebar. If you’re doing long cuts with a lot of rebar, it’s probably best to use a gas-powered saw.”

Similarly, ICS debuted its new 701A pneumatic chain saw, which can produce 4.5kW at 6.2bar. “Pneumatic equipment is not a major market but there is demand for it, especially among utility companies because there are no fumes or risk of spilling hydraulic fluid,” said ICS senior marketing manager Joe Taccogna. “It’s great for ductile iron pipe, and will work with any of our

ment in efficiency and a duck-bill bag valve that increases capacity by 30%.

Ruwac showed its Red Raider XLT combination vacuum and separator system, that provides 8.49m3/h of suction and 13.6kg bag capacity. A continuous duty version of the system has a turbine rated at 100,000h.

“More and more grinding companies are working 12h shifts,” said Potorski. “With the continuous duty version, there’s no need to shut down. The next crew can come in and keep working.”

In keeping with tackling larger dust management issues, Dust Control Technology formally announced its largest design, the DustBoss DB-100. The new dust suppressor has a range of more than 100m, giving it ample reach to cover material stockpiles up to 91m high, and can cover an area of more than 26,000m2 from a single location.

Safety is more than just a fad

This summer will see the introduction of a new ICS high-frequency saw, the first new product since ICS became the exclusive North American distributer of Pentruder products last year. “It will run on a Pentruder power pack, and handle up to a 635mm guide bar,” said Taccogna.

Diamond Products announced its new Heavy Duty Orange MAXX high-speed diamond blades, which feature heat isolation slots in the segment and angled gullets to keep the blade cool during high speeds. The blades are available in sizes from 254mm to 508mm diameter.

Also on display at Diamond Products’ booth were the CC1200XL small walk-behind saw with 355mm and 457mm blade capacity; the WSE2226 high-cycle wall saw, which can handle a 2.2m diameter blade with 26kW at the output shaft; and the CB80CT 60kW trailer-mounted hydraulic power unit.

Great times for grinding and polishing If the overall construction and demolition business is good, the concrete grinding and polishing segment is nothing short of great. Diamatic representative Kevin Partin summed up the current market as busy, citing a

large number of conversion projects. “A lot of national retail chains and educational institutions are retrofitting their buildings with polished concrete,” said Partin.

That is why Diamatic introduced the new 432mm BMG-435 P gas-powered grinder. With a tooling speed of 500-900revs/min, the BMG435 P is ideal for removing old coatings or adhesive residues, to smooth or flatten concrete slabs, including curled expansion joints, or correcting surface imperfections. Diamatic also introduced the new 559mm 555 PRO planetary grinder, which can be easily dismantled for quick relocation to basements and other hard-to-reach areas. The 555 PRO uses 229mm diameter tools and a tooling speed range of 350-1,100revs/min.

WOC also provided concrete surface contractors their first chance to test Scanmaskin’s new Scan Combiflex 800 DSP, featuring a colour touch screen display providing feedback in real time. The SC-800 DSP provides parameters to guide through every step of a task, from matching the right diamond tool to a particular surface to finding the proper forward speed to prevent excessive wear.

Other grinding/polishing highlights at WOC included Husqvarna’s 813mm PG 820 RC, the world’s first remotely controlled concrete floor grinder with dual drive technology, promising significantly higher productivity and better work results with more ergonomic operation and effortless transportation. Similarly, NewGrind’s Rhino RM150 is designed to separate into two or three pieces for easy fitting into a car trunk. The RM 150 is available in 1.1kW and 2.2kW models.

Kutrite showed its new Conqueror 32, a 410kg, three-headed polisher with an 813mm footprint.

Other features include front and rear lights, an adjustable handle, and valves for more precise water control.

HTC touted its AirFlow EZ tool holders that create an increased and controlled airflow around the tools, keeping them cool and channelling airborne dust into the vacuum intake. This system helps extend tool life and minimize cutting rate, while also providing for more effective dust removal.

While good economic times may have dominated the buzz at the show, an equally important, perhaps more pervasive focus was on operators. Nearly every new product demonstration stressed some element of improved safety, comfort, and assistance to help operators, not only be more productive and produce higher-quality work, but also to perform those tasks more comfortably.

And judging by the questions many contractors were asking, equipment manufacturers are being pressed to demonstrate that their claims of safety and ergonomics have to be more than just words.

Cupertino Electric superintendent Joe Gann from San Jose, California, spoke for many when he noted that productivity is no longer the number one consideration in buying a new tool. “Now we’re looking at things like safety, ergonomics, vibration, and repetitive stress first, followed by productivity, then price,” said Gann.

“Safety is becoming a big part of the conversation, and a major part of our project and task planning. The whole industry is changing.”

HTC updates T-Rex Case Customer Centre for Intermat visitors Case Construction Equipment will run two daily visits to the Case Customer Centre Paris every day of the Intermat exhibition in April, one in the morning and one in the afternoon.

Visitors to the show will be able to take the Case shuttle to the Case Customer Centre in Monthyon, where they will be able to experience a wide range of machinery in action and test drive the new models at the demonstration and testing grounds.

The Customer Centre’s team of specialists and demonstrators will present the full range of Case equipment, showcasing its productivity, versatility and efficiency. They

will provide detailed information about the machines and Case services available to customers and to answer any queries visitors may have.

The testing grounds will enable visitors to try out the machines in a variety of applications with guidance from Case specialists who will show them how to get the best performance from the equipment and featured technologies.

At the end of the half-day visit, the Case shuttle will take visitors back to the Intermat exhibition.

HTC has launched an updated version of its T-Rex Super floor stripping tool.

The T-Rex series was launched in 2003 and consists of five aggressive tools for the removal of everything from thick epoxy coatings to stubborn adhesive residue.

A number of enhancements have been made to the series over the past year incorporated in the latest T-Rex Super II. T-Rex Super II is designed for mixed materials and its high stripping capacity produces fast results and an even surface.

HUSQVARNA’S NEW K 6500 Trevi Benne at Intermat The Italian company Trevi Benne will take part in Intermat and display many items of demolition, recycling, excavation and forestry equipment in Hall 6, Booth L 100. These will include two attachments, the Multi Kit MK 28P with the impact booster multiplying power valve and the new universal hydraulic quick coupler B-Lock designed and developed in order to comply fully with the European Standard EN474.

Husqvarna’s Prime family is expanding with the K 6500 Chain that manages deep and narrow cuts, as well as square corners. The power cutter can be used separately or to complement wall sawing to avoid overcutting at corners. “K 6500 Chain is a great addition to our Prime offering,” said Husqvarna Construction Products power cutters global product manager Johan Simonsson. “The Prime family is appreciated for its power and ergonomics, and K 6500 Chain is no exception.”

The power cutter works on both 1 and 3 phase and weighs about 9kg. Besides from handling deep and narrow cuts and square corners, it prevents overcutting and can also cut pipes from one side. Users can choose between three different bar lengths and maximum cutting depth is 450mm.

The K 6500 Chain works together with either one of the separate power packs PP 65 or PP 220 in the Prime range and provides users the flexibility to use the available source of current. Apart from being efficient and lightweight, K 6500 Chain also embodies other Prime characteristics, such as a powerful electric motor, no stiff hydraulic hoses, a small easy-to-handle power pack, low vibrations and excellent ergonomics.

EXCAVATOR VERSATILITY

Evolution rather than revolution is not a bad thing. PDi’s David Ehrenstråle reports.

Buckets designed for crushing or screening are valuable additions to excavators and loaders, making the machines more versatile and useful. They are, after all, in principle tool carriers.

Any additional equipment helping end users to contribute to a sustainable development represents serious value. JCB provides a welcomed addition in this field. And one supplier says they offer buckets suited to the treatment of frozen materials. David Ehrenstrale reports on some of the alternatives.

it is possible to screen, crush, pulverise, aerate, blend, mix, separate, feed and load materials all in one stage.

They can process many types of material such as soil, demolition and construction waste, asphalt and glass. Their Dseries buckets can tackle frozen materials, thereby extending the business season for end users in cold climates. Frozen materials can be both hard and brittle and any bucket used would have to be able to handle materials with these characteristics. The company’s screener/crusher can screen and crush materials from 15mm to 150mm fragment sizes.

Hydraram Hydraram offers the HRP and HCB-series of buckets.

The Hydraram HRP pulverisers are hydraulically rotated concrete crushers, primarily for demolition of buildings and recycling. There are models available for carrier machines between 9t and 250t.

A slew ring reduces the forces on the excavator, so it is less stressed. The shape of the crusher jaws was designed to crush concrete as effectively as possible. With the steel cutters in the back of the jaw, the pulveriser can easily cut steel reinforcement. Made from durable steel with a good wear resistance, a minimum maintenance and a long lifespan can be expected.

The Hydraram HCB series was purpose designed for breaking concrete and brick and is available for carrier machines ranging from 12t to 45t.

There are numerous applications ranging from demolition, construction, quarrying and mining and waste recycling and remediation.

The crushing buckets have a high wear resistance resulting in minimum of maintenance and a long lifespan.

JCB At Hill head, JCB launched three base models built for the company’s own excavators.

The CB60 crusher bucker is for on-site crushing of demolition material between 100mm and 20mm. Material with reinforcing bars can be crushed to recover steel for scrap. It comes ready to use with hoses and hanger bracket. The CB60 weighs 1.7t, has a maximum output of 19m3/h with its respective opening width and height of 600mm x 450mm.

tive alternative to a mobile crushing plant. Used in small quarries and construction and demolition sites it further enhances the earning potential of the carrier machine.

The CB90 is for on-site crushing of demolition material between 100mm and 20mm. Material with reinforcing bars can also be crushed to recover steel for scrap. The CB90 is supplied ready to use with hoses and hanger bracket. A flywheel uses the machine’s hydraulic power for sustained crushing action. The CB90 weighs 3.9t and has a maximum output of 40m3/h with its respective opening width and height of 900mm x 450mm.

Mantovanibenne The company’s MVR riddling buckets are suitable for the selection and separation of materials of different textures. Through the basket rotation the material collected in the bucket is sieved out leaving only the material, which is larger than the mesh of the basket. It is available in models with differing size and weight and can be mounted on excavators from 4t to 40t. The basket is available with different mesh size screens depending on the material to be processed. The screening members can be easily replaced.

Applications include primary selection of material for fixed pulverisers, selection of demolition debris, land reclamation, beach cleaning and compost mixing.

The MVR riddling buckets are also suitable for digging loose materials. All models are built with high wear resistant materials with a hardness of HB 400.

MB MB offers a large range of crusher buckets, from the smallest MB-C50 for mini excavators, the MB-L, which can work with loaders, skid loaders and backhoe loaders, to the largest BF150.10, suitable for excavators from 70t.

It is also possible to use a dust suppression kit to spray micro particles of water.

As well as crusher buckets, the company has designed four screening buckets and four grapple rotary movement MB-G models that, thanks to the interchangeable claws and the 360° hydraulic rotation, allows users to manage large loads and odd shapes.

Ramtec Robi screening buckets were designed for the screening and separation of different materials and special applications. To ensure smooth drive and reduced daily maintenance, Robi use modern gearboxes with all screening buckets. The structure is strong and robust to allow heavy-duty use with fine screening down to a particle size of 20mm.

Rotar Rotar’s cleaner buckets for excavators and wheel loaders provides an effective method for screening, grading, washing, mixing, cleaning and sorting various materials.

With screen inserts as an option, any material can be screened to the fraction desired.

They use the EVO operating system without electrics and just two hydraulic hoses are attached to the carrier.

The HEX and HPL series have a rotating screening drum, which separates, mixes and cleans various materials in one continuous motion for use in the recycling demolition and earthmoving industries. The company’s cleaners can be installed on wheeled loaders, excavators, backhoe loaders and other similar machines. Loading and unloading is easy. Thanks to a hydraulically operated cover, the drum can be opened and easily used as a standard digging bucket. Fines fall out of the drum while retaining oversize material. The use of different size screening members produces different size material.

The rolling effect of the material in the drum provides a cleaning reaction.

US construction equipment exports decline Exports of US made construction equipment ended 2014 with a 13.2% drop compared to 2013, with a total $17.26bn (€16.22bn) shipped to global markets.

US exports fell to all world regions for 2014. Business to Europe, South America and Australia/Oceania was the hardest hit, according to the US Association of Equipment Manufacturers, citing US Department of Commerce data it uses in global markets reports for members.

Market Analysis Overview The fourth quarter of 2014 marked the eighth consecutive quarter that US construction equipment exports experienced year-on-year declines.

While exports have been decreasing steadily since the second quarter of 2012, imports have been trending higher. The fast growth in the post-recession exports of 2009-2012, was a strong driver for domestic manufacturers, though it appears the domestic market has become one of the more robust growth engines for the industry.

The recent declines in total construction equipment exports, which were in line with regional development, have been partly due to a retrenching from accelerated spending earlier in the economic recovery, a strengthening dollar against the Japanese Yen and declines in commodity prices, particularly oil, copper and coal.

From a global perspective, the US market remains strong, though somewhat affected by the oil price decline.

CSDA Wins Big in Las Vegas The Concrete Sawing and Drilling Association had a series of successes at the World of Concrete show.

While attendance for this year’s WOC reached almost 56,000, a 15% increase from 2014, CSDA also had increased participation for one of its three training classes. The association’s Estimating class had 25 students, up from 18 the previous year. Launched in 2003, Estimating covers the function of an estimator in the concrete cutting industry and has graduated 235 students to date.

“It is extremely encouraging to see so much interest in the Estimating class again,” said class tutor Pat Stepanski. “This is a good sign that work loads are starting to pick up throughout the industry. Contractors want to price their work correctly and increase their bottom line, so we are happy to give them the tools they need to do that.”

Elsewhere at the show CSDA lead training instructor, Rick Norland gave a 90min CSDA-sponsored seminar on Maximizing Efficiency of Concrete Structure Modification/Demolition. Delegates learned how to strategically combine impact breaking and

specifically the Brazilian market, remains challenging. China also experienced a sluggish demand, despite government stimuli. Europe’s market remained uneven with growth in the United Kingdom. The Russian market declined significantly. The strong decrease in exports to Belgium can be attributed to the overall European market, as Belgium remains a throughput nation.

Another popular CSDA event was the Next Generation Reception, hosted at the Renaissance Las Vegas Hotel. For the second year running, the reception drew a good crowd and gave up-and-coming industry leaders the chance to network with peers in an informal environment. It is sure to reappear on CSDA’s schedule for WOC 2016.

CSDA exhibited in Central Hall of the Las Vegas Convention Center and had more interest in its industry programmes and resources than in recent years. As a result, several companies made the decision to join CSDA during or shortly after the show, which was more than the previous two years combined. Meanwhile, existing manufacturer, distributor and affiliate members filled close to 40 booths.
