WHERE

EXPERIENCE COUNTS

Resolutions are not only for New Year Dear reader When this issue of PDi reaches you it will be the New Year. What are your professional and private wishes for 2014? When I was younger I sometimes made a New Year’s resolution that I usually kept to myself to avoid any trouble. But I have stopped making New Year’s resolutions because they are so hard to keep. Does this sound familiar? But that is not the only reason I stopped. Why limit resolutions to a New Year event? By making a big issue about it I think it is harder to fulfil resolutions. Every day I wake up I have a new day of possibilities and new days of making new resolutions. And that is day after day and so on. Life is complicated enough so why put resolutions on a pedestal making the fall much higher when we find ourselves breaking them. Let us promise ourselves instead to allow us to start over again whenever we want and every day if that is necessary. In the business climate that we are currently experiencing we need to be much more alert then a couple of decades back. Things change much faster and competition is over us like a hawk, all the time forcing us to re-evaluate our strategies over and over again. Companies that do not do that or are not aware of the fast changes often find themselves in trouble these days, realising that the results do not live up to there expectations. We are often talking about special programmes for training to become good craftsmen in concrete cutting and demolition, but now it is just as important to be trained in how to run a company. You can be very skilled in what you are doing but still not be a successful company owner. The rules of entrepreneurship have shifted and shifted a lot. Those who are aware of the shift and how to adapt and navigate their company will better succeed. I think that 2014 provides more hope for our industry than a year ago. The US construction industry is showing clear signs of a fast recovery. In Europe it is the same for some countries when others are still struggling and will for a while. Asia is also doing well with a Chinese market that is slowly recovering to a pace that the rest of the world is comfortable with. Ahead of us this year we also have a number of trade shows. In a few weeks World of Concrete will take place in Las Vegas. The show that had a setback during recent years is now back stronger and more important then every for our industry. About a month after WOC the carpet for Conexpo-Con/Agg is rolled out, also in Vegas. PDi will be present at both shows with our own booth. In Europe the Italian show Samoter will be staged again in Verona. Samoter is also an important show with a strong international focus. Maybe it can have a positive effect on the weak Italian economy. On 4-5 September we are organising our own Scandinavian demolition show DEMCON again and the venue is as usual InfraCity, Stockholm. More information about the show is available at www.demcon.se. After a rather weak 2013 I feel that 2014 will be the beginning to a more stabilised economy that players in our industry will benefit from. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank all our readers and advertisers for 2013 and I wish you all Photo: Vito Gogola.

Words from the IACDS President

Mild weather makes life easier In the north of Europe and particularly in Scandinavia we have had a great autumn. In Sweden you never know when winter will arrive. It comes like a thief in the night and you never know how long it will last and how bad it will be. But so far the winter has been kind to us. Our construction workers have been happy with the mild autumn and winter so far, which has allowed most jobs to continue. Everything has been easier and the cost for heating has been much lower this year. Last year it was really cold at the beginning of November and the winter stayed until April

Construction equipment manufacturer Chicago Pneumatic has secured an order from Facar (Angola) for 46 diesel generator sets from the recently launched CPDG range. As part of the agreement Facar has been appointed as the principal distributor of CP diesel generators for Angola. “This is an exciting opportunity for our company and it is our aim to establish the CPDG generator brand in Angola and position Chicago Pneumatic as a leader in the market,” said Facar general manager Nagib Farouk Farhat. “We see this as an opportunity to expand and consolidate our business, and believe we can achieve good results as the CPDG generator represents a high quality product at a competitive price. This is just the first step in what we hope will be a long and fruitful relationship with Chicago Pneumatic.”

Australian concrete cutting training programme to near completion in 2014 We are very happy to welcome Jason Franken’s to PDi’s Open Column. Jason is the president of Australia’s concrete sawing and drilling association, CSDAA. In this column is charing on what is happening within the Australian concrete cutting industry. on in AAs a new year is approaching, I am reminded of how busy it has been for the Concrete Sawing & Drilling Association ? Australia this year. Since our last annual general meeting a business plan has been developed to assist in the growth of the industry and to promote awareness of the specialised skills required to operate as a professional in the sawing and drilling industry sector. The association has developed a swms library and operations manual, which is available through membership of the CSDAA. This initiative is the first step in many that are planned for 2014 to assist contractors and suppliers to manage day to day operations. During the past four general meetings we have been promoting the development of the Certificate 2 - Concrete Sawing and Drilling. This training qualification is being developed and is expected to near completion towards the end of 2014. This is a major development for all sawing, and drilling contractors across Australia, and has been on the drawing board for over ten years. To find out more information on this training I strongly recommend you attend the CSDAA conference on the Gold Coast 6-7 March 2014. The 2014 conference is a great opportunity to network, catch up with friends, and have a great time. The committee preparing the conference has done a tremendous amount of work to provide quality guest speakers along with Friday night?s dinner cruise. As always this type of event would not be possible without the generous support of our supplier companies. While many are familiar with the same old things there is always something new on display, which makes their efforts a great reason to attend and support those who support our members. Issue 10 of the Australian association’s Diamond magazine has just been released and is full of great stories and new equipment. Many thanks to the editorial staff for the time and effort that has gone into this edition and is a credit showcasing the CSDAA. The Diamond magazine can be read online at www.csdaa.com.au. The 2014 AGM is in Melbourne on 17 January and commences at 1pm. Elections for the new executive committee will take place along with the transition of resigning executives. For those executives not returning in 2014 I sincerely thank you for your time and effort and will acknowledge these individuals further on the day. Executive nomination forms will be emailed to encourage participation within your industry. If you wish to contribute to the CSDAA please ensure you fill out and submit the nomination and questions forms. In closing it is one year down from a two year posting as president and I look forward to finishing the list of goals the executive has set in place. It is also that time of year to relax and enjoy the Christmas break. For those working through this Christmas, work safe and enjoy your time off when it comes around. Wish you a prosperous 2014 Jason Franken CSDAA president

New chairman for Keltbray

In the UK the Keltbray Group has appointed Keith Elliott as chairman. Elliott has been a non-executive director since 2004 and taking on this new role will free Keltbray owner and chief executive officer, Brendan Kerr, to develop the company’s strategic partnerships. “As part of our corporate governance, Keith has led the Board and provided support and advice to Keltbray for some time now, and we have greatly benefited from his more than 30 years’ of business experience in engineering and construction,” said Kerr. “I am pleased he has now agreed to take on a more hands-on role in the day to day management of Keltbray, while continuing to provide strategic support and advice and remaining a key ambassador for us externally.”

Keltbray launches new remediation service

In the UK the engineering, construction and decommissioning services company Keltbray, today launched a new business venture, Keltbray Remediation. This is aimed at extending the company’s recycling and material management offering by providing a dedicated and more comprehensive service to manage and remediate Brownfield sites. It is envisaged that Keltbray Remediation will provide organic growth and cross fertilisation between Keltbray Group’s service disciplines. By handling complex remediation issues on site, Keltbray Remediation will help bring down transportation costs and minimise the carbon footprint associated with material handling. Keltbray also sees this business as playing a key role in meeting the increasing pressures to improve waste recovery levels. While Keltbray’s recycle rates from demolition and civil engineering contracts regularly exceed 90%, Keltbray Remediation represents an expansion of recycling and recovery services. Keltbray Remediation is a division of Keltbray Environmental Management. “Keltbray first turned construction waste recycling and recovery into a standalone business in 2010,“ said KEM managing director David Jenner. “Since then, we have been able to offer tailor made ways of treating waste and contamination issues using physical separation, chemical or biological treatment. With Keltbray Remediation, we will be able to manage large scale contaminated sites from inception to completion, and take this commercial offering a step further, by providing larger scale services that manage excavation and the processing of waste and hotspot remediation on site. This will include the remediation of old landfills

and the treatment of heavy metals and fuel or groundwater contamination and control on Brownfield sites to facilitate new developments, such as housing.”

New president of LiuGong Machinery

In China Guangxi LiuGong Machinery has appointed Yu Chuanfen as president of LiuGong Machinery succeeding Mr. ZengGuang’an. Yu Chuanfen has been with LiuGong since gaining his bachelor’s degree in welding technology and equipment from Wuhan Huazhong University of Science and Technology in 1994. During his 19 years with LiuGong, he has served in a number of different management positions. Before being promoted to his current role, he held the position of vice president of LiuGong Machinery, responsible for the wheel loader, driveline and foundry divisions, LiuGong India, and Liuzhou ZF Company. For more than 55 years, LiuGong Machinery has been a leader in China’s construction equipment manufacturing industry. From building the country’s first modern wheel loader, LiuGong has evolved to become one of the fastest growing, global, construction equipment companies in the world offering a full line of machines.

Liebherr turnover stagnant

The Liebherr Group expects total turnover in 2013 to reach EUR9,086M, and equal to the previous year. A slight downturn is anticipated in the construction machinery and mining area, where turnover according to current forecasts will be in the region of EUR5,620M, about 4 % lower than in 2012. Outside the construction machinery and mining area growth of 8% is anticipated with turnover expected to reach EUR3,466M. Liebherr views 2014 with restrained optimism and is forecasting turnover similar to 2013 with a slight increase in workforce.

Lessons to be learned from onshore decommissioning The decommissioning of oil and gas facilities in the North Sea presents a huge challenge, but drawing on the knowledge and experience of UK consultants and contractors could help smooth the process, believes RVA Group managing director Richard Vann. In cost alone it is projected that the cumulative expenditure on removing obsolete production platforms will be in the region of £35bn (€42bn) over the next 30 years. And given that this is still a relatively new industry, it is acknowledged that there are considerable supply chain weaknesses and bottlenecks to overcome. Perhaps the biggest obstacle is the lack of engagement with those most able to help. Traditional or onshore demolition is significantly more advanced and offers much by way of knowledge and experience that offshore operators can draw on directly to potentially overcome some of the hurdles and issues it is currently facing. The demolition industry has come a long way since the days of sledgehammers and wrecking balls. Highly sophisticated techniques and machinery are now used to decommission complex and hazardous sites and facilities over short, medium and long-term timescales. There are several major consultants, engineers and contractors in the UK managing and undertaking multi-million dollar, large-scale, high-hazard and complex plant dismantling projects as a matter of routine across the globe. So how do we take this capability and employ it in the offshore sector? Firstly, oil and gas companies need to recognise the developments made in the demolition arena over the last two decades. In particular, it needs to consider piece small dismantling as a mainstream approach over the traditional ‘bring it back as it went out’ methodology. In practice, this means dismantling platform plant and equipment in-situ. Hazardous materials, including asbestos and NORM, can be removed offshore, while waste streams can be segregated at source ready for processing and disposal onshore. This piece small dismantling approach has several advantages, including the potential to reduce the cost of any one particular project. It provides for the opportunity to use or share resources over a number of gas or oil platforms in an economic and concurrent or consecutive sequence. Work can also be phased to maximise weather window efficiencies with the operator retaining a higher level of flexibility over the whole project. Furthermore, piece small dismantling relies less on heavy lifting vessels, so existing supply vessels and barges can be used for the majority of operations. It also provides opportunities to use a wider range of reception facilities and there are increased choices in the onshore disposal of arisings. Even if the HLV approach is selected, tackling 50m tall structures, weighing up to 30,000t and with a footprint of 70-80m2 should not be underestimated. Here again the leading organisation from the traditional demolition industry, will have a great deal to bring to the table. So what is the next step? I would like to see a commitment from platform operators to seriously investigate piece small methodology. Improved engagement with onshore professionals and the contracting supply chain is also required, coupled with making use of the tried and tested good practice in the decommissioning, decontamination, dismantling and demolition industry. Just like our colleagues out at sea, we fully understand the importance of balancing cost effective, innovative and pragmatic dismantling solutions with EHS excellence. There is much invaluable knowledge and experience that will translate and add considerable value to offshore dismantling programmes.

New CEO at Hilti

The Hilti Group has appointed Christoph Loos as chief executive officer, succeeding Bo Risberg, who leaves the company after seven years due to the Group’s internal age regulations where executive board members must leave the company’s management when turning 56. Hilti succession in the executive board is exclusive to internal candidates. Christoph Loos joined Hilti in 2001 and was appointed to the executive board in 2007, where he was responsible for the finance, human resources and IT units. Since 2011 he has been responsible for the emerging markets and energy and industry units. His predecessor, Bo Risberg, joined Hilti in 1999 and has been a member of the executive board since 2001, taking over as CEO in 2007. Due to the ongoing challenges caused by the financial and currency crises Risberg remained CEO one year longer than originally planned. Corporate governance factors will prevent Risberg from moving to the Hilti Group board of directors as the board already counts two former Group CEOs among its members.

in Inner Mongolia North Hauler Joint Stock, which manufactures and sells rigid haulers under the Terex brand in China. The acquisition includes five models of rigid haulers with payloads ranging from 32t to 91t. The introduction of rigid haulers will extend Volvo CE’s position in light mining. The deal also sees a further three models of articulated hauler added to the Volvo portfolio, with payloads ranging from 25t to 38t. These machines support Volvo CE’s already established position in the articulated hauler segment. If approved, the acquisition will add some 500 employees to Volvo CE’s existing workforce. It will also allow for the continued use of the Terex brand name on the relevant machines for a transitional period. The transaction is expected to be finalized during the second quarter of 2014.

New role for Julie White

In the UK Julie White, the managing director of diamond drilling and concrete sawing company D-Drill, has been appointed chair of the National Specialist Contractors’ Council’s training committee. The organisation brings together the common aims of 29 specialist trade organisations within construction and is the voice of more than 7,000 contractors across the UK. It has four key topics at the heart of its policy, fair payment, training, reducing bureaucracy and low carbon. White will spearhead the NSCC’s work on skills and is reigniting her campaign to see the creation of a national database of apprentices in the construction industry. “I am a big believer in trade bodies because I think it gives an industry much greater strength to be speaking with one voice, said White. “Fair payment, cutting red tape and reducing the industry’s carbon footprint are all issues that I am very passionate about but, as the chair of the training committee, skills and training will be my primary focus in this role. “Those who know me know I am a big believer in apprenticeships and training. I’m putting myself through an apprenticeship and 45%t of D-Drill’s staff have come through the scheme. But we are always looking for future talent and, as the economy starts to improve, construction needs to be prepared and needs to have a pool of people who can come in and help us to achieve sustained growth. “One idea I have put forward to government, which has received positive ministerial feedback, is to have a database of apprentices who have been released by other companies within our industry. In principle, everyone agrees with the idea because it means people who have shown an interest in construction but haven’t yet got a permanent job could be picked up by another company who are looking to recruit. The sticking point, however, is data protection and that is where I have asked the government to step in and change the rules.”

Althammer goes for Hitachi Mortar under the bridge in India The old multi span Pakuria Bridge on the 130km long Dhankuni Kharagpur highway in Jharkhand, India, ran over a dry riverbed and railway line. Now obsolete, the bridge has been demolished in 60 days using Volvo construction equipment. Construction and demolition company Matte & Associates based in Mumbai, together with its fleet of Volvo equipment, was responsible for the bridge’s demise. Matte & Associates is among the leading demolition firms in India. The company was established in 1987 and over the past 10 years has expanded into residential, waterproofing, structural repairs, rehabilitation and drilling works. Now the company currently has a fleet of demolition tools and specializes in the demolition and recycling of concrete. The company’s demolition squad includes four heavy-duty Volvo excavators, which include an EC210 B-Series, EC210 B-Prime, EC290 B-Series and EC290B-Prime. They have been at work for nearly five years, demolishing bridges, multi-storey buildings, roads and other structures across the country. “The machines are still in excellent working condition, just like they were five years ago,” said, Matte & Associates owner Ram Matte. “Every job we undertake presents tough challenges and calls for solid planning, and innovative thinking. We took the bridge down so quickly that if people weren’t already familiar with it, they would never know it even existed. Our Volvos have helped ensure that. Any demolition equipment must deliver on safety, comfort, reach, power and control to make a difference. Safety and comfort are

critical because demolition is a hazardous business. The Volvo B-Series and B-Prime demolition excavators deliver on all counts. “Volvo excavators take extremely demanding demolition tasks in their stride. Our business is all about clearing things up quickly with minimum fuss and stress. The machines feature demolition grade hydraulics, a robust undercarriage system and spacious operator cab.” Matte & Associates has a maintenance plan with Volvo CE dealer Svenska Technologies, which takes care of its servicing issues. The company is proud of the relationship it has with Volvo CE and values its support. “Volvo is Volvo, there is no comparison,” said Matte. “We really couldn’t have hoped for better service and from day one of our demolition operations, we have relied on Volvo and they have delivered. Only recently, we have placed an order for another Volvo EC290 excavator.” Volvo CE’s EC210 and EC290 C-Series excavators are expected to thrive in India’s popular 21t and 30t excavator market. The C-series offers more powerful Tier III compliant Volvo engines, delivering exemplary fuel efficiency. These machines produce high power and the engines work in harmony with intelligent, advanced hydraulics and a more rugged undercarriage and superstructure. Also, the operator’s environment, already class-leading with the B-series, has been substantially upgraded with a new cab, giving operators more comfort, more space, better climate, better visibility and improved controls that are easier to use.

A German family-owned business has decided to renew its excavator fleet exclusively with Hitachi construction machinery following the purchase of two Zaxis-5 medium excavators. Demolition and earthmoving specialist Althammer’s strategy is now to concentrate on a one-brand policy in conjunction with the Hitachi Support Chain after sales network provided by German dealer Kiesel. The Pemfling-based contractor was established by Karl Althammer in 1978 as a transport company. He bought the firm’s first excavator one year later for earthmoving projects and the business has developed since then to its current team of 20 employees. Althammer’s business is now split equally between demolition and earthmoving projects for the public and private sectors. Althammer’s daughter Kathrin, and two sons, Christoph and Carlo now manage the business, which bought its first two Hitachi excavators in 2012, a ZX130LC-3 and ZX290LC-5. The team at Althammer has been so impressed with the performance of these machines, that it is now replacing its fleet with various models from the new Zaxis-5 range, starting with the purchase of a second ZX290LC-5. “Our lightweight ZX130LC-3 was customised with wide tracks, a two-piece boom and blade, mainly for working on soft ground to repair flood damage,” said Christoph Althammer. “It is a special excavator that was built exactly to our requirements. This successful step into the world of Hitachi also included the first ZX290LC-5. This machine has been assigned specifically to demolition work and has already helped us to establish a strong competitive position within this region. “We have decided only to make future investments in Hitachi construction machinery,

because we feel that it is better to concentrate on one brand for our excavator requirements. The latest ZX290LC-5 has been purchased as a versatile machine for both demolition and earthmoving projects. The price and quality mix, running costs and comfort of Zaxis-5 excavators are very important to us, as is the service that we receive from the Kiesel Südost branch.” The new ZX290LC-5’s operator is Adam Thomas, who has 15 years’ experience, including a period spent working with a Hitachi ZX470LCH-3. “The cab has been designed with the operator in mind,” said Thomas. “It is spacious, relatively quiet and the ergonomic controls allow me to operate efficiently. I like the air conditioning and the new colour LCD monitor is very user friendly. The TRIAS hydraulic system is excellent and enables me to work accurately and precisely. It is also a versatile machine that works so smoothly with a wide range of attachments. The undercarriage is stable and durable, and the ground clearance is good at the rear. The fuel consumption is favourable and this is of course an important benefit for us on all projects.”

Robotic A There are a few manufacturers of remotely controlled demolition robots. However, competition is tough and getting tougher every year and there has recently been several new product launches by the main Nordic players. Mikael Karlsson reports.

Avant Tecno unveiled its first new demolition robot, Avant Robot 185, at Bauma 2013. In February, the company will also unveil a new high frequency breaker called Avant B230 designed for the Avant robot.

New Brokk machines

Brokk has launched the new Brokk 60, the smallest remotely controlled demolition robot in the Brokk range and also in the world. With about 25% more power than its predecessor, the Brokk 50, a new control system and an even more robust construction, the Brokk 60 combines greater capacity and speed for outsized performance in the most challenging of confined spaces. The increase in power is due to a new 22litre/min flow hydraulic system, while a fundamental redesign of the slewing system, machine body, electrical system, control system and more, makes this a powerful next generation model of the smallest machine in the Brokk range. The new control system gives operators increased reliability, smoother machine movements and continuous indications of temperature and pressure. Despite the increased power and performance, the Brokk 60 still only weighs 500kg and is 70 mm lower than the Brokk 50. The exterior has been upgraded with sturdy steel covers and a covered slewing table. New LED lighting provides brighter illumination to the work surface. The Brokk 60 has the same mounting plate as the Brokk 50 and, therefore, can operate the same range of attachments, including breakers, crushers, buckets and grapples. The Brokk 60 is mainly intended for the construction industry, but it is also ideal for other applications where space is scarce, like jobs in small infrastructure and mining tunnels and in the nuclear and process industries Bro k k has also launched the diesel driven Brokk

400D, which is aimed primarily at meeting the ever increasing demands of the process and tunnelling and mining industries, where electrical supply is limited or non-existing. The Brokk 400D has a reach of almost 7m and is heavier than its predecessor, but its footprint is only slightly bigger than Brokk 330D. This is enabled by a new larger undercarriage, new outriggers and other more robust design choices. The Brokk 400D boasts faster manoeuvring and positioning. Its tracking speed is increased by 60% over the Brokk 330D, which makes it the fastest Brokk model and fit for applications where movement over longer distances is required. Brokk 400D is designed for heavier attachments like the SB 552 breaker and other popular attachments currently available only to owners of the electric powered Brokk 400. The CC700 crusher, drills, grapples, scabblers, and beam manipulators are just some of the other attachments available. In addition to the visible exterior changes, the Brokk 400D also comes with a number of important intrinsic improvements. The new control system allows operators to control the machine with quick, precise movements for accurate demolition and other intricate tasks.

Two new Husqvarna robots Husqvarna launched its first remotely controlled demolition robot in 2009. This year the company has launched two new machines, the DXR 270 and DXR 300. “With this latest product launch, Husqvarna can now offer a complete series of remote demolition robots,” said Husqvarna Construction global product manager Lars Gustafsson. The DXR 270 has been developed with a clear user focus. The new outriggers with extra span not only provide increased stability, but also allow for a greater workload. The fixed arm has a stable design that delivers precise positioning of the tool and requires only a minimum of service. With a reach of 4.8m it is highly competitive in its segment. The low weight of 1.75t and the short chassis, which is 780mm wide, gives it a very compact design. Its low height additionally gives operators a free view over the machine while working, making

Additions operations more efficient, safer and help give it a low centre of gravity. “With its compact design and low weight, it is easy to transport as it fits through all normal doorways and can be transported in most lifts,” said Gustafsson. Like all Husqvarna DXR demolition robots, DXR 270 is controlled by a remote control with a 89mm colour display and Bluetooth technology. The control system is adapted to handle demolition environments characterised by high vibrations, concrete dust and water. The DXR 270 is applicable for most work related to concrete demolition and smaller excavation work, both indoors and out. Husqvarna DXR 300 is equipped with the new out-riggers that are 160 mm wider to provide increased stability and have the ability to carry more than 400kg of workload. Nevertheless, DXR 300 weighs only 1.96t, which makes it the lightest remotely controlled demolition robot in its segment. Husqvarna DXR 300 is equipped with a fixed arm that delivers a precise positioning of the The new diesel driven Brokk 400D, which is aimed primarily at meeting the ever increasing demands of the process, tunnelling and mining industries, where electrical supply is limited or nonexisting.

tool and requires only a minimum of service. With a full reach of 5.2m, it is ideal for demolition of concrete and brick constructions. DXR 300 is only

780mmm wide and will fit through most doorways and construction lifts making it suitable for diverse applications within the construction area. The remote control with a colour display and Bluetooth technology is made to facilitate one-handed operations and to make the daily work easier for the user. The control system is adapted to handle conventional demolition environments with high vibrations, concrete dust and water. It also provides an element of safety as operators can stand at a comfortable distance from the machine while working.

the biggest Finnish demolition contractors, Paupek that has been working with Avant since 2005. Paupek managing director Pekka Piirala and area manager Ilpo Koskinen visited the Avant factory in November to shake hands for three loaders and a demolition robot. As Paupek already runs a large fleet of demolition robots and Avant loaders, they were excited to add the Avant Robot 185 to their fleet. In addition there are some other minor manufacturers of remotely controlled demolition robots, for example TopTec from Germany and HD Engineering and Giant from Hong Kong and China. They have all been in the market for many of years, but have not presented any new products for a while.

Something special from Top Tec Spezialmaschinen

The German made demolition robot TopTec 5500E. This particular model is elctrically driven.

Top Tec Spezialmaschinen, based in Munich, Germany, has a long tradition of developing demolition machines, particularly for the process industry. Top Tec’s products have a strong foothold within the process industry, mainly in Europe, and the company intends to strengthen its brand within the construction industry. This includes remotely controlled refractory de-bricking robots for industrial use in scheduled repairs or unexpected shut downs of kilns, ladles or ovens. Top Tec has developed their own remotely controlled electric de-bricking robots TT 1850 E, TT 2500E and the bigger units

facturer of compact multi purpose loaders, unveiled its first demolition robot the Avant Robot 185 at Bauma. In February, Avant Tecno will also unveil a new high frequency breaker called Avant B230. The breaker is designed to be a perfect fit for the Avant robot providing the best productivity in its class. Besides the massive input power of 19.8kW, the hammer runs with an extremely high frequency, reaching up to 2600blows/ min. In addition, Avant Robot 185 can be fitted with several other demolition attachments, such as cutter-crushers, grapples, pulverizers, shears and drills. It features compact design without compromising on efficiency or reach. The electrically driven machine can be powered either by a 35A, 18.5kW or 32A, 15kW electric motor, allowing flexibility and power when or where it is needed. Equipped with telescopic boom, the maximum vertical reach is 5.5m, while horizontal reach is 4.5m. Excluding attachments, Avant Robot 185 weighs 2t. The construction sector has been a rapidly growing customer segment for Avant Tecno, and the addition of a demolition robot has proven to be a good fit to the product portfolio. In addition, Avant has modified and expanded its demolition offering to compact multi purpose loaders as well. “We have received a lot of good feedback from the existing Avant customers, but we have managed to penetrate into completely new customer sub-segments as well,” said Avant vice president marketing and sales Jani Käkelä. A good example of an Avant customer that was happy to see Avant developing its offering more to demolition, is one of

New Allu M series processing buckets Material processing attachments manufacture Allu Finland is introducing the Allu M series for use with large mining loaders and excavators for soft rock mining. By attaching an Allu M series processing bucket onto a mining loader or excavator, the machine becomes a high capacity mobile primary or secondary material processing unit that does the job in a one step operation. Crushing, screening, mixing and loading are easily done with the mobile processing machine that can be easily moved around in the mine. With this method the processing machine is brought to the material and not the material to the machine. This can bring big cost savings in any soft rock mining operation due to lower equipment operation and investment costs, more efficient loader utilization rates, lower material transportation costs and because the processing and loading can be done in one step directly into a dump truck without any interim transportation needs and storage of unprocessed material. The Allu M series processing buckets are for mounting onto 50t to 130t mining loaders and 60t to 200t mining excavators,

and they can also be easily mounted on sub terrain loaders to take the material processing underground. The Allu M series is a hydraulic accessory that utilizes the hydraulic system on the carrier. The Allu M series processes easily any soft rock materials and minerals like coal, oil shale, limestone, kaolin, dolomite, gypsum, and rock salt. The test programme has proven that capacities up to 650t/h can be achieved with only one unit. The Allu M series can be equipped with different processing drums depending on customer needs. Fragment sizes like 50mm, 75mm, 100mm and 150mm can be produced in one step. One big advantage of this method of processing is by applying the correct crushing force, the separating of unwanted materials is possible in one step. The Allu M series is now available in two models, one with 7m3 bucket the Allu M 3-32 for 50t to 60t loaders and 100t front shovel excavators and a 4m3 bucket Allu M 3-20 model for 60t to 80t excavators. The product line will be completed next year covering three models for mining loaders and three models for mining excavators.

Competition always on the up in diamond tools

Diamond tooling is a fiercely competitive business, with hundreds of players from every corner of the world looking to outdo one another. This, however, does not prevent new entrants from joining the fight. Andrei Bushmarin reports on the new companies and new products in PDi’s annual diamond tool feature.

cutting and drilling various building materials. Its fighter silent evo blades have 12mm segments, laser-welded to the steel core. The segment size enables a long service life, while the sandwich system used in the steel core reduces noise and vibration. The blades are applicable for sawing reinforced and aggregate concrete as well as fired bricks and self-locking blocks. The Italdiamant core bits for wet coring of reinforced concrete are available in 27 specifications, depending on the diameter. The bits come complete with 10mm segments and the 1?in thread for professional drilling systems.

Quick-changing device from Cuts Diamant Another Italian manufacturer, Parma-based Cuts Diamant, has designed a quick-fixing kit, which enables fast and easy changeover of core bits. It allows users to save a lot of time and effort on site and eliminates the possibility of damage to the core bit’s thread. The kit consists of a 1?in mandrel and a 1?in core bit connection. From one side, the mandrel is attached to the drilling machine and from the other side to the core bit connector. The latter is then screwed onto the core bit. In order to speed up the changeover process, the manufacturer recommends a few connectors screwed onto the core bits of most usable diameters in advance.

The techniques of processing natural stone and cutting various construction materials with diamond-tipped tools go hand in hand. In the diamond tooling business, manufacturers tend to produce consumables for both industries. Even those that focus on construction always have a fair share of stone cutting products in their catalogues. It also works in reverse with manufacturers with roots in the quarry industry turning to construction now and then. Italdiamant based in Malo, a small town in the province of Vicenza, Italy, is a prime example of this.

Italdiamant, a new player Italdiamant is a family-run company, which has been in the stone business since 1976. It exports over 80% of its output through a network of regional branches and offices in the US, Western and Eastern Europe, Asia and the Middle East. Italdiamant recently entered the construction market with a range of diamond blades and core bits for

Adamas extends its drill bit portfolio Netherlands-based Adamas has extended its drilling portfolio with two new products. One is the XRB-3D line of drill bits, ranging from 16mm to 35mm in diameter and featuring an asymmetric laser-welded crown and semi-patterned diamond grit. This construction leads to higher drilling performance and enables a quick removal of the concrete core. According to the manufacturer, the XRB-3D products allow users to reduce labour costs by 10-20%/hole compared to using regular crown bits. Adamas recommends using the XRB-3D core bits for drilling anchor holes in reinforced concrete. Also new from Adamas are the PBX asphalt sampling core bits. These laser-welded tools are designed for core sampling jobs on asphalt roads. Core samples need to be of an exact diameter and have a smooth surface. Therefore, the PBX drill bits come complete with a mixture of hard and soft segments, which ensures maintaining an exact core diameter during the life of the drill bit. The laser

Rhino Tools presents a new concept for PCD grinding tools In November Rhino Tools presented a new design concept for its polycrystalline diamond floor grinding tools. Having studied the local market, the Spanish manufacturer found out that the majority of PCD

consumables sold in the area had smaller portions of PCD inserts with a general brazing weakness, leading to their failure during application. The Rhino Tools new range is based on PCD full round inserts of 12mm in diameter, with a deeper pocket machined into the steel shank. The new brazing alloys result in a stronger and longer lasting product. This new concept can be applied to any type of diamond tooling from small individual plates to large diameter ones. The new tools are said to have received an excellent response from the market, despite their recent launch. The company is now in the process of putting together a marketing campaign, advocating the benefits of this solution.

special survey

Germany in the lead with Brazil is the Rookie

in total is estimated 10% of what it was in 2008. In 2014 many think it will be even worse. Number of member companies in the association has dropped from 80 to only 10.

2013 became more of a transitual year for the global concrete cutting industry. On everybodys mind is if 2014 will be the same. However, Germany keeps is lead of being the world’s biggest concrete sawing and drilling market and the rookie is Brazil even though the huge country with a lot of potential still don’t have a association for concrete sawing and drilling contractors. This years Concrete Cutting Survey is rather short due to both space limitations in this issue and that the data has not been gathered from IACDS as it use to. Anyway there is a rather clear picture of how the current global situation looks like in the concrete cutting industry. No statiscs gathered At the last IACDS meeting in the spring of 2013 the country reports were just as popular and interesting element as they use to be. Donat Fritsch from Switzerland reported that the situation in Switzerland is very good. The construction sector is booming and the currency is strong. The association has 84 members. About ten to twelve new and trained concrete cutters leave the apprenticeship programme every year organised by the association.?The German association’s Thomas Springer reported that they have 710 members where 637 are contractors. There are about 1,200 concrete cutters in Germany. The average turnover is about €534,000. This means that Germany continues to have the world’s largest concrete sawing and drilling association. Verner Havlena from Austria reported that the Austrian market has grown by about 10% since the last meeting to an average turnover per contractor of €670,000. The situation is good and stable. There are 36 members in the association and about 140 concrete cutters in the country.?The new IACDS member, Russia, reported that the average turnover for a Russian concrete cutter is about €457,000/year. The association has their own training programme for workers and company owners. The Russian association has their own tolerance rules, but is also using the norms set up IACDS. The market situation is good and stable now and also for the near future.?Joel Vinsant from the UK sawing and drilling association said that the UK market is picking up again, but only in the last two months. The UK construction economy is a roller coaster, but it now

it seems like many of the large projects that have been held back are going to start. The association has 77 members but there are about 250 concrete cutters throughout the UK. Average turn over is about US$686,000/year. Vinsant also said that next year the association would celebrate its 30th anniversary. Every year they have their own show called the Concrete Show attracting some 4,500 visitors.?The UK association has their own training programme and their own training area. Health and safety is the priority and 148 apprentices have passed the programme and another 56 are well on their way to passing. The programme is governmentally supported with some US$12,000. All apprentices that pass get their own licence and diploma. The programme has become quite powerful as the majority of contractors that hire concrete cutters only hire cutters that are licensed.?Norikazu Shibuya from the Japanese association reported that Japan has had a difficult time due to the tsunami that stuck the country. The government is economically supporting concrete sawing and drilling companies to help build up the areas of the country that were damaged. Between 2011 and 2012 the concrete cutting industry increased by some 10%. There are several tunnelling renovation projects going on in Japan at present. Shibuya says that the association has about 90 members, but there are around 1,000 concrete cutting firms in the country. The average turnover is €915,000. Shibuya brought 14 concrete cutters with him to Bauma and the IACDS meeting. He also mentioned that neighbouring Korea has an estimated 700 concrete sawing and drilling firms, but no association.?The US concrete sawing and drilling association executive director Pat O’Brien reported that the market has been rather quiet during the first quarter of this year, but in total 2013 is expected to be similar to 2012. The US association has 476 members and about 322 of these are concrete cutters. There are close to 2,000 concrete cutters in the whole country. Many Canadian concrete cutting firms are members of the US association, as they do not have their own any association. Canada has about 30 members and there are some 300 firms in the whole country. The US association has close cooperation with several other branch associations like the demolition association for instance.?For Spain, José Blanco reports, that the market is close to zero. The construction industry

Huge potential in Brazil Other markets like Australia we don’t have any fresh figures from but we know that their concrete cutting industry is one of the bigger in the world and quite prosperous right now. Jason Franken, president of the Australian association is charing some information with us in the Open Column on page XX in this issue. Other countries that show a growth in activity both when it comes to concrete sawing and drilling and concrete floor gridning and polishing are several countries in Central and South America. The market with the greatest potential right now is Brazil which reprts a steady growth in numbers of contractors. One thing that make it difficult to estimate the size of the market is the lack of associations in this field. Brazil’s constrcution federation does not have a special section dealing with either concrete sawing and drilling and demolition. But Brazil’s rental association ALEC. The Brazilian concrete cutting contractor Gilberto Giasetti ones was president of ALEC and tried in the beginning of 2000 to gather statistics over the Brazilian concrete sawing and drilling industry as well as over contractors working with controlled demolition. But unfortunately without any success accoring to Giasetti. However Giasetti is telling that when he was active in ALEC there was about 80 members of rental companies. About 20 of these also offered concrete sawing and drilling and demolition services. Brazil are in this case quite similar to for instance Russia where rental companies offer specialized services. This we see quite little of in for instance Europé. Giasetti says that ALEC has today about 200 members and he believes that a rather big number of these also offer demolition and concrete cutting services. But today Brazil is steadily building up a group of specialized contractors working with concrete sawing and drilling and controlled demolition. He estimates the number to some 200 companies. Brazil is a country with a huge potential in the fields mentioned that we show a fast growth in the coming years. Brazil, as the strongest market in South America, will show the way for other neighbouring countries like Argentina, Chile, Bolivia and Colombia. A country with a similar development like Brazil’s is Mexico which we can expect a lot from during the next decade. A more detailed report about the Brazilian concrete cutting, concrete floor grinding and controlled demolition industry can be read in issue 2-2013 of the new magazine Professional Demolition Americas. The article can be downloaded on www.pdamericas.com.

Aquajet provides solution in Holland An existing elevated rail deck in Holland presented demolition problems for the contractor BAM Civiel in preparation for joining it to a new twin rail track concrete deck.

Exposing without damaging Built about 20 years ago in preparation for future expansion, the reinforced concrete deck, above the A10 highway through the southern suburbs of Amsterdam, included two post tensioned cables. After removing a balustrade wall at one end of the deck with a concrete wire saw, it was necessary to remove the deck concrete to expose the rebar for attaching to the new adjoining deck. However, a bigger problem was exposing the post tensioned cables for inspection and recasing in new concrete, without damaging the steel cables and rebar. Specialist contractor Aqua Demolition Services provided the solution with hydrodemolition using two Aquajet Systems Aqua Cutter 710V evolution robots. “Without using the Aqua Cutters, possibly the only other solution would have been to use hand lances taking 8-10 operators at least two weeks to clear all the specified concrete safely,” said ADS director Arjan de Waard. “Using Aquajet’s hydrodemolition technique allowed us to complete the job inside one and a half days, including set up times.”

ed, prior to recasing in concrete. “We were extremely worried about initially removing the concrete as the client, the rail authority O.V. Saal had specified there must be no damage to the steel cables,” said Bam Civiel project manager Leen van Anrooij. “Fears proved unwarranted as the Aqua Cutters removed all the concrete cleanly and left the steel cables totally exposed and undamaged” A second, similar sized post tensioned cable was also located about 600mm below the first cable. Access to this one was close to the elevated deck’s columns and beam above the pile cap and, once again, the client specified no damage to the beam behind the contoured deck. “We therefore opted to tackle this problem by using a second Aqua Cutter 710V evolution robot installed with a 7m vertical mast,” said ADS chief executive officer Hans ‘t Geloof. “Not only did it ease the demolition process from the front of the 900m deep deck, it also allowed us to progress at a fast rate and without damaging the beam wall.” Joining the bridge decks is part of Bam Civiel’s contract for a 7km section of the new proposed 18.5km link from Amsterdam South to Duivendrecht. The project entails laying twin rail tracks at grade and on seven

new elevated bridges alongside the existing rail network. It also includes a station extension at Rai. The new line is intended to form a vital link in public transport plans between Schi-

phol and Lelystad aimed at doubling trains 12/h by 2016 travelling without a timetable service and increasing passenger numbers to almost 80,000/day by 2020.

Oakwood Demolition gets an ace to fight dust

In the UK Oakwood Demolition recently evaluated their arrangements for controlling dust on site and was drawn to the versatility of ACE Plant’s Dustfighter range. Oakwood has purchased a Dustfighter DF75000MPT dust suppression unit that produces a fine mist of water through a series of high-pressure jets. The mist is propelled onto the site by a

powerful fan, covering a wide area in just a few moments, rendering the area free from unhealthy and hazardous material. The DF75000MPT is powered by an onboard 22kVA generator and an integral 2,000litre stainless steel tank. It is entirely self-contained, which alleviates the need for additional or ancillary equipment and arrives on site ready for instant operation.

In addition, the DF7500MPT has a coverage range of around 60m and its water consumption can be as low as 10litres/min, making it a very flexible and cost effective dust suppression solution. The unit can also be remotely controlled. “On past contracts we have made do with our own fan-based dust suppression set, but when we added up the

costs and the inconvenience of having to gather together a generating set, cables, hoses and pressured water feeds required to operate our old fan system, the decision to purchase an all-in-one Dustfighter from ACE Plant became obvious,” said Oakwood Demolition service director Mike Hughes.

Freeley completes demolition of seaside town landmark

In the UK contractor J Freeley’s demolition of an eyesore has paved the way for the redevelopment of a key regeneration site in the north Wales resort of Colwyn Bay. Manchester-based Freeley demolished the former market hall and neighbouring empty shops after landing the contract with Conwy County Borough Council following a competitive tender. The council and the Welsh government bought the site in 2012 as part of the Bay

Life+ regeneration project, which involves the purchase of buildings of strategic significance to Colwyn Bay’s future. Freeley’s work involved removing asbestos from the 19th century, four storey building and making the structure safe with propping before demolition. The demolition had to be carefully planned, as the site lies on Princes Drive, which runs through the town centre, and near the busy A55 road and a railway line. Complex traffic management issues had to be addressed, including the provision of temporary traffic lights and careful phasing of heavy goods site traffic to avoid congestion and disruption in the town centre. Also, the buildings were attached to an historic and listed former cinema, now The Picture House pub. Following demolition and clearance work, the site was fenced off, ready for rede-

velopment. More than 98% of the materials removed from the site were recycled for use in future construction projects, including 125t of wood and timber, 70,000 bricks, 20t of steel, 10t of light iron and 1,800t of hardcore. “Our experience in dealing with schemes of a complex nature meant we were fully capable of tackling the challenges presented by this project, including the presence of hazardous materials, the location of the site

and the listed building next door,” said Freeley managing director John Freeley. “We were delighted to complete the project for the local authority, which will hopefully help to breathe new life into a popular resort.” The next phase will see council officials prepare a development brief and invite proposals for schemes, which could include shops, homes, offices or leisure amenities.

of these! PDi’s annual look at compact loaders and skid steers reveals the changing way users look at and operate their equipment. Jim Parsons reports.

This has been a busy year for manufacturers of compact loaders and similar types of construction and demolition machinery. Uneven, yet undeniable economic growth in most parts of the world have contractors and rental companies thinking about augmenting their fleets with new models to compete for job opportunities that may come their way without the risk of wafer thin profit margins.

A delicate challenge Manufacturers have also been at work upgrading their products to meet emissions and environmental regulations, such as the US Environmental Protection Agency’s Tier IV standards, which is set to complete its eight-year phase in period in 2015.

There is also the growing realization among manufacturers that even the most advanced engine technologies and rugged components will not achieve the desired levels of performance without due consideration to factors, such as ergonomic controls, accurate and timely read-outs for decision-making, visibility, and overall comfort. This recognition is particularly important given that in many regions, competition for skilled people is increasing, as the available labour pool is shrinking. And, the monetary risk of mistakes, damage, or injuries resulting from an operator having spent long hours in an uncomfortable, cranky machine are hardly palatable to any contractor or project owner. All the new features incorporated in these machines usually add up to a higher price, leaving some prospective buyers to

roll their eyes and long for simpler, less complicated and less expensive times. But those days are gone and had the industry known then what it does today about environmental, health, resource, and safety issues, many people might well rue having gotten away with paying so little for so long. The real bargains are found in current equipment. They are the machines designed for long-term value in terms of productivity, sustainability, and support of every contractor’s most valuable resource, its people. And unlike throwaway equipment of the past, these are products that can and will make a difference every day they are on the job.

Wacker Neuson’s 550 compact wheel loader features a fourwheel steer system that delivers excellent manoeuvrability and a rigid frame design for stability. Additionally, the 550’s long wheelbase offers smooth driving and easy handling, even across the roughest terrain. “The 550 has an exceptional power-to-weight ratio making this unit very fuel efficient and economical to run,” said Wacker Neuson wheel loader product manager Will Wright. “Its versatility and ability to load and carry over rough terrain is where this machine really shines.” The 550 AWS is powered by a 35.5kW Tier 4i diesel engine, which is capable of handling optional increased hydraulic flow to run larger attachments, such as snow blowers, brooms and trenchers. A faster travel speed option is also available providing up to 31km/h. Available with canopy or cab, Wacker Neuson’s 550 offers a spacious and functional layout. The cab model provides a roomy work area with heat and air conditioning. A hydraulically operated universal skid steer-style quick hitch allows for changing from one accessory to another without leaving the operator’s station. The standard skid steer plate allows users the convenience of using their skid steer attachments. The 550 wheel loader is designed with counterweights located far behind the rear axle for higher payloads and more stability. The unit has a straight tipping load of 1.98t with a maximum bucket pin height of 3m.

Liebherr L 506 C and L 508 C Compact Loaders Liebherr’s new compact loaders represent an entirely new machine concept by combining high performance with safety and versatility for all kinds of tasks. At less than 2.5m the L 506 C and L 508 C are exceptionally low in height. The L 508 C, with its 49kW engine, is believed to be the only compact loader with centre-pivot steering in this performance category to have such a low overall height. The L 506 C weighs 5.18t, and has a tipping load of 3.45t. It has a standard 0.8m? bucket and is powered by a 45kW diesel engine. With an operating weight of 5.6t, the L 508 C has a tipping load of 3.85t and a 1m? standard bucket. The compact loaders’ reduced height automatically lowers their centre of gravity, increasing the tipping load limit and stability, even on uneven surfaces. For optimum force distribution, the lifting cylinder is centrally located on the tapered lift arm. Parallel movement of the working equipment is the key to fast and precise work, as loads are positioned and lifted without manual correction or loss of material. If a fork is fitted, a payload of more than 2t is available. Both Liebherr models feature a comfortably equipped cab with an above average window area. The operator has an unobstructed view of the power tools or working attachments, and the rear and side mirrors provide all-round visibility. The conical pattern lifting gear improves visibility even more. The driver can react to any situation arising close to the machine. This guarantees maximum possible protection for people in the vicinity, the equipment and the load. The controls in the operator’s cab are laid out for intuitively correct operation and can be individually adjusted by the operator. This enhances productivity and safety, allowing the operator to concentrate fully on the task at hand. Thanks to their low headroom, the Liebherr compact loaders can easily reach the job site even if access is restricted by tunnels or underpasses. It can also be carried without difficulty on tipper vehicles, or in a high-cube container. If moved on a conventional transport vehicle, the maximum height does not exceed 4m. Mobility is enhanced by the machines’ lightweight construction, which in normal circumstances does not exceed the statutory weight limit. Liebherr offers a wide range of options to equip the

compact loaders for a variety of different tasks. With the easily operated quick coupler, add-on attachments can be installed and removed rapidly and effortlessly. Easy access to all maintenance points and radiators and oil coolers also helps boost productivity and minimise maintenance downtime.

Hanenberg Materieel’s Sherpas can carry the load Dutch manufacturer Hanenberg Materieel has been making mini-loaders for more than 25 years. Their Sherpa machines, which range up to 1.4t, utilize components from several well-known brands, including Kubota, Honda, Rexroth, Dampvoss, Parker, and Varta. The lightweight hydraulic 4-wheel-drive miniloaders can move up to 1t. The Sherpa 300+ is equipped with wide tyres, a 365cm3 hydraulic engine, a 34cm3 plunger pump, oil cooling, a hydraulic handbrake, and Parker hoses. Because the machine does not have additional transmission components, there are fewer wear parts and, therefore, lower maintenance costs. In addition to the standard options, the Sherpa 300+ can be extended with a number of accessories, such as a seat with armrests, work lights, a lock, hydraulic quick-coupling, a hydraulic rotate function on the joystick, and a towing hook. Hanenburg Materieel is also the first manufacturer to present an electric mini skid-steer, the Sherpa 100 ECO. Just as powerful as the internal combustion engine model, the Sherpa 100 ECO is particularly suitable for interior demolition work, especially those tasks that required manual labour. The 760mm wide mini skid-steer is powered by a 1.5kW front-mounted electric motor. The space that normally contains the combustion engine now stores a 360A battery pack that powers the mini skid-steer for up to eight hours.

Gehl RT250 Compact Track Loader Gehl has introduced the RT250 compact tracked loader. With an operating capacity of 1.13t, at 35% tipping capacity and a 55.4kW Tier IV compliant Deutz turbo-diesel engine, the RT250 offers additional capacity while providing the same industry-exclusive features equipment owners have come to expect from Gehl compact track loaders. The RT250 compact track loader delivers 330Nm of torque and up to 6.5t of tractive effort, resulting in better traction and stronger digging forces. “In our growing compact track loader line, we saw the need for a high-capacity model that would meet the demands of larger projects,” said Gehl compact track loader product manager Sean Bifani.

40 PDi • Issue 6 • December 2013 • January 2014

“The RT250 answers the call for higher capacity while offering all the same time and cost saving features of the lower capacity models in the RT series.” The high-torque engine on the RT250 also features AntiStall technology, which electronically senses machine load, and continuously monitors and adjusts the hydrostatic drive pump to manage available engine horsepower and torque. This optimises machine performance during heavy-duty cycles, but does not allow the engine to stall, resulting in faster cycle times and less wear and tear on the engine, battery and starter. And because the Deutz engine does not require any fuel after-treatments or periodic regeneration, users enjoy less downtime for routine maintenance on the job site. In addition, the RT250 compact track loader features the automatic track tensioning system that eliminates the need for manually tensioning the tracks on the loader before operation. The system increases the life of the tracks and bearings by ensuring the proper tension immediately upon start-up and tension release when the machine is shut down. An adjustable straight tracking feature eliminates dog-tracking, keeping the machine on a straight path at all times. The ATT system also makes maintenance on the undercarriage track system virtually tool-free. With the flip of a switch and removal of a simple lock-plate, the tracks de-tension and can be easily removed to allow access to the track system. The extra-large operator’s station on the RT250 is designed for optimum operator comfort and maximum productivity. The joystick controls are mounted directly to the suspension seat frame, allowing them to move with the operator as the machine travels. This significantly reduces operator fatigue, enhances comfort in even the most adverse conditions and allows precise control for performing delicate tasks. Controls, armrests, restraint bar and foot pod depth are adjustable. A multi-function display incorporates all warning and operation lights. With the use of a single button, operators can page through the various screens that show the machine’s parameters, from engine and transmission performance to controller communication faults. This display also provides access to the configuration screen to gain access to the standard 5x5 drive control system settings and other optional performance settings. The new RT250 has a welded, track loader chassis, and a lift arm designed for optimum visibility, strength and capacity. The simple in-line design increases structural

integrity by eliminating SAMOTER PDI.indd 1 the complex geometry and welding found on many competitive offset lift arm designs. The machine’s 3.25m lift height results in more efficient load placement and overall performance. When maintenance is necessary, a large rear hood and swing-out door provides easy access to the engine service points. The ROPS/FOPS tilts back on gas-spring assist cylinders providing access to the machine’s hydraulic components and electronics. Additionally, the patented foot pod tilts forward for easy cleanout and access to the fuel tank and hydraulic components. The RT250 incorporates many other standard and optional features such as the All-Tach and Power-a-Tach attachment mounting systems, HydraGlide ride control system, high-flow auxiliary hydraulics, hydraulic selflevelling, complete pressurised enclosed cab with heat and air-conditioning, air-suspension seat, front and rear work lights, and anti-vandalism protection.

Volvo Introduces C-Series Skid Steer Loaders to Europe Volvo Construction Equipment has unveiled seven additions to its skid steer loader range for Europe. The MC60C, MC70C, MC95C, and MC115C models cover operating capacities from 610kg to 1,180kg, and gross engine power from 36kW to 55kW. The three tracked models MCT85C, MCT125C, and MCT145C have rated operating capacities ranging from 860kg to 1,450kg, and gross engine power from 49kW to 69kW. Featuring a single loader arm design, Volvo wheeled and tracked skid steer loaders deliver superior loading performance and durability compared with traditional skid steer designs, along with the improved visibility, safety, and enhanced cab access. Without the horizontal

w w w. as p ha lti lt i ca . i t

cross member found on two-arm vertical lift machines, operators experience excellent all-around visibility. The cab also features a large top window. The single loader tower arm design makes cab access easier and safer, thanks to a large, wide-opening side cab door and non-slip step. This eliminates the need for operators to climb onto and over the bucket or attachment. Side entry also eliminates the operators turning to sit down in traditional skid steer loader cab designs. In addition, the side door makes it possible for the operator to engage the loader arm support without the aid of a second person. The operator can stop the machine, safely exit without walking under the load, and then walk around the rear of the machine to safely engage the support. Inside the Volvo cab, the operator’s environment has been redesigned with increased space, comfort and ease of use. The Volvo cab meets ROPS/FOPS standards, with all controls and gauges placed for productivity. Unlike old format machines, the new Volvo cab is sealed and pressurised, minimising dust and noise levels. More importantly, a large front window makes it easier to exit the machines in emergency situations. The left-hand machine control pod hinges rearward with a single gas strut. The right control pod features a wrap-around seat bar designed to fit operators of all sizes, and acts as a rest for the operator’s right arm. Both armrests on top of the control pods are cushioned, and the left hand control pod tilts open to reveal ample storage space. A 12V power outlet is also located inside. A forward-tilting cab and large rear compartment service door provides simple, safe access to all service and maintenance points. A claimed best-in-class fuel tank capacity allows operators to spend less downtime with refuelling, delivering longer operating shifts for more productivity.

CASE Introduces Tier-4 TR270

CASE Construction Equipment has debuted the new Tier 4 Final TR270 Alpha Series compact track loader, an updated 54kW model that increases bucket breakout force (3,298kg), torque (314.5Nm) and hydraulic flow (standard: 91.6litres/min; high-flow: 122.6litres/ min) compared with the previous model. TR270 offers excellent performance in a package designed for easy transportation and minimal impact on the jobsite. The updated TR270 weighs in at 3,751kg with a rated operating capacity of 1,225kg (1,270kg with optional counterweight). The radial-lift arm design is ideal for digging and pushing, while the machine’s hinge-pin height is ideal for loading and unloading trucks. A 73.8litre fuel tank extends runtimes and ensures that the machine can work the entire day without refueling. The TR270 features a cooled exhaust gas recirculation (CEGR) engine with a particulate matter catalyst, made up of a diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) and a high-efficiency flow-through filter. This solution is efficient and maintenance free, as it does not require manual regeneration or filter replacement (compared with a diesel particulate filter). The DOC converts emissions into neutral gasses. The remaining particulate matter then passes through to the high-efficiency flow-through filter where it is stored and burned off through passive regeneration powered by the heat of the exhaust gas. The TR270 offers a new EZ EH (electro-hydraulic) setup menu that features nine preset speed and control settings that can be adjusted on the fly. This allows the operator to match controls to their preference for comfort and greater productivity. A single rocker switch allows operators to switch between the CASE “H” operating pattern and ISO pattern controls. New handles with additional “feel points” improve controllability and feathering. All CASE Alpha Series compact track loaders feature a dozer-style undercarriage, designed for stability on steep slopes and excellent performance in muddy and sandy terrain. The rigid track frame features fewer moving parts than suspension track systems, making it more durable and easier to maintain. The TR270 offers one of the widest cabs in the industry at nearly 1m, and comes with an optional enclosed cab that is fully sealed and pressurized against noise, dust and fumes. The cab-forward design provides excellent visibility down to the bucket edge and curb lines, and to the rear of the machine. Ultra-narrow wire side screens, side lighting and a skylight further improve visibility. The low step and entry threshold makes it easy for the operator to get in and out of the cab. The engine, filters and fill points are all located at the rear of the machine for quick access. The TR270 features CASE’s easytilt cab for convenient access to the drivetrain compartment. Hydraulic quick couplers allow operators to quickly change attachments from the comfort of the cab, while Connect Under Pressure (CUP) manifolds require no tools to connect or disconnect hydraulic lines.

Smothering Du Although dust suppression equipment is comparatively new it is now frequently used by the world’s demolition contractors. There are numerous models available to suit a variety of applications where there are adequate supplies of water. Similar equipment has long been used for creating snow, but it is believed that the US company Dust Control Technology, with their Dustboss, was the first to introduce dust suppression equipment. Jan Hermansson summarises equipment introduced in 2013. The HPW-DUST high-pressure dust suppression system from Finnish manufacturer Dynaset’s cuts 52% of dangerous dust emissions compared to traditional irrigation methods. When working with

the HPW-DUST, the air is significantly clearer at work sites. Visibility is better and the air is safer to breathe and even the taste and smell of the dust will be removed. The system can be used in all machine operated work where dust emission is considerable. The greatest benefits will be achieved in extremely dusty work, such as demolition, mining and quarrying, crushing, material handling, recycling, and waste management. The system is based on the Dynaset HPW highpressure water pump, which is powered by the hydraulics of the carrier machine. High-pressure microscopic water mist is sprayed directly on to the treated area through special nozzles preventing the dust from spreading. The water mist forms a cover that dust particles cannot penetrate, resulting in a dust free environment. The weight of a single water bound dust particle increases dramatically which makes it fall, and is so tiny that it does not become wet enough to make it soggy. Too often the demolition industry uses old fashioned solutions for dust suppression, such as low-pressure water irrigation and electrically charge suppression systems. The widely used low-pressure models consume large amounts of water leading to muddy sites. Electrically charge systems are usually very expensive and take up a lot of space. Dynaset provides more efficient solutions to replace old technology for better results. An effective dust particle binding, compact size and low water consumption, as well as targeting the dust suppression to the correct area, are the specific features of the Dynaset HPW-DUST. “Water cannot be viewed as an infinite resource because there is a price for acquiring it,” said Dynaset sales manager Anni Karppinen. “Workers must handle flooding on site when using traditional low-pressure dust suppression because of the

high volumes of water. With high pressure water mist there will not be such problems.”

Proved to be more efficient Independent air quality research proved high-pressure dust suppression a more effective method than a traditional irrigation solution to reduce dust emissions while brushing streets. The research measured PM10 dust particles which are considered to be air pollution and dangerous for health. The research group measured dust emissions before, during and a couple of hours after brushing. The dust emission samples were collected with a mobile laboratory ‘Sniffer’. The tests were done with Snowek’s street sweeper equipped with Dynaset HPW-DUST high-pressure dust suppression, two side brushes and a water pistol. Also a traditional irrigation system was installed. In the tests, three equal stretches were driven with the street sweeper, one without dust control, one with traditional irrigation system and one with a high-pressure dust suppression system The four key results of air quality research were: 1. The high-pressure dust suppression reduces 52% of PM10 dust concentrations compared to a low-pressure irrigation system while brushing. 2. PM10 dust concentrations are 82% less with high-pressure dust suppression than without dust control while brushing. 3. The air remains cleaner after brushing when high-pressure dust suppression is used. 4. Brushing momentarily increases the dust in the air with all brushing methods. The research was made by Metropolia University of Applied Science.

No dust!: The call from Cava la Pedicara quarry Dolomite has been the main rock extracted from the Cava la Pedicara quarry in the province of Basilicata in the south of Italy. Large amounts of dust were generated during the quarrying work, so the managers opted for a customized solution from EmiControls in a bid to counteract the problem.

The operators had two main aims. One was to improve the working conditions at the quarry and the other to protect the environment. The quarrying generated large clouds of dust particles polluting the air. The aims of the project were ambitious. It was a large area to start reducing the spread of dust without disrupting the quarrying process. In order to achieve the objectives, every single source of dust was analyzed with a view to adopting an efficient strategy to combat it. The resulting solution was a combined system comprising dust-laying sprayers, fixed sprinklers and water curtains.

Customized combined solution Two V12 dust-laying sprayers were installed on lifts at two strategic points. The optimum heights for the lifts were calculated to be 4.5m and 6m. This allows the pivot facility of the dust-laying sprayers to be used to full effect and to cover a large area. The lift machines can be controlled by radio and remote console. A mobile V7 is used for relatively small sources of dust if required. A device with fixed nozzles has been fitted at the conveyor belt discharge points. This solution was developed especially for this application. The fine mist can bind the dust from above and directly at its source. The screening process used to create large amounts of dust and this was solved with a water curtain, which

prevents the dust from the screening machines from escaping into the air without affecting the material. The work has been completed and the dust levels in the quarry are now virtually zero.

Service network for guaranteed reliability A service contract for regular maintenance work has also been signed to maintain the present standards. It is important to adhere to the service intervals to guarantee reliable operation around the clock and in heavy-duty conditions. EmiControls has a worldwide service network, which can provide technical support. In the specific case of Cava la Pedicara, a local partner firm will be taking care of the regular servicing for the operator. The employees have been specially trained

by the EmiControls service engineers and can receive support from the operational headquarters at any time.

Chicago Pneumatic’s new concrete equipment range Construction equipment manufacturer Chicago Pneumatic has introduced a new range of concrete equipment. In applications from walls to floor slabs, the range has products to cover every step, from vibration and levelling to finishing and cutting. “We’re excited about this new range because it gives our customers a great opportunity to improve productivity throughout their concrete projects,” said CP business development vice resident Andrew Cope. “Productivity gains arise because the operator can always find the right tool for the job, whether it’s vibrating, levelling, finishing or cutting.” The new VPM mechanical pokers provide choices for mid-sized construction sites using medium-to-high slump concrete. VPE electric pokers are ideal where low noise, low maintenance, light pokers are required. They offer fast start-up, a wide action radius and rapid acceleration for medium-to-high slump concrete. For jobs of any size with low-to-

high-slump concrete requiring high-speed vibration, the VPP pneumatic poker range delivers high-performance centrifugal force. The CP poker range is complemented by a selection of portable power sources. Mechanical pokers have a choice of gasoline or diesel drive units with rubber mountings to reduce vibration and noise, and quick-release couplings. VCE Frequency converters run electric pokers on sites with electric power; otherwise, VCG gasoline and VCD diesel generators are available. Some generators can supply up to four VPE pokers simultaneously. A complete range of air compressors is also available to run VPP pneumatic pokers. In addition to pokers, the new concrete product line includes walk-behind screeds that provide a consistent, even surface without any guide or supporting tube. Equipped with Honda engines, they offer reduced hand-arm vibration, with an easily accessible ignition switch and throttle control for quick

adjustments. The LBG 1200 hand-held screed provides surface vibration only and is suitable for slabs of all types and concrete of all consistencies. Recommended for smaller slabs and medium-to-low slump concrete, the LBG 800 bull float screed provides deeper vibration and single-step levelling. Screeding time, labour and transport costs can also be cut with the CP CombiForm lightweight, leave-in-place screed rail system. CombiForm is easily prepared and cast into the concrete, providing a levelling solution. Without requirement for concrete pre-levelling before screeding, it can also eliminate the need for a floor saw. CP’s STG power trowels are ideal where smoother finished surfaces are essential. Models are available for small edging tasks to larger floors and create long-lasting durable finishes for concrete slabs, industrial floors, parking lots and alleys. The STG 24 is a small power float edger for smaller slabs and finish-

ing edges, especially in confined spaces and by walls. STG 36 and 46 are higher capacity trowels designed for larger slabs. Completing the range are concrete and asphalt floor saws that deliver a straight, stable cut for expansion joints, to a maximum depth of 150 mm. They can also cut asphalt for road maintenance, or act as a jackhammer alternative. They have adjustable handles and perfectly positioned controls and are available in gasoline and diesel models.

How ST-115 tells the truth about your polished floor Andy Bowman is explaining the meaning of the ST-115 and how the electronic device, the TMeter, makes specifications of polished concrete floors easier and more accurat. The specification for a polished concrete floor has been determined by polishing up to a certain grit level and attaining a certain gloss level. The main problem is that neither of those two specifications tells you how well the floor has been actually refined. The gloss is easily manipulated by chemicals and a high speed burnisher for example. Andy Bowman, founder of Adaptive Concrete Innovations, LLC out of Arkansas, USA and the chair of the CSDA (Concrete Sawing and Drilling Association) commission on polished concrete floors, has together with 16 other experts on surface metrology from 4 different countries worked for over a year to put together a a quantifiable measurable metric procedure, parameters and standards for measuring the quality of a polished concrete floor. The group’s work has been called ST-115. The ST115 document measures the average roughness of the floor, the Ra, that measurement in turn relates to nine specified Surface Texture Grades (STG). In the following article Andy Bowman explains what ST-115 is and what it means to the polishing industry.Adaptive Concrete Innovations, LLC is has the global rights for the electronic measurement device, the T-Meter, that measures electronically the Ra, the STG and CSP (Concrete Surface Profile) 1-6 for floor preparation.

What is this document and what does it mean to the polishing industry? Surface finishing is a multidisciplinary activity intended to tailor the properties of the surfaces so that their function and serviceability can be improved. Since polished concrete was born, it was important to have a quantifiable standard for the level of finish that was being produced. The first best practices documents described the process of polishing and broke out the various levels of grinding and began with heavy grit metal bonds that were operated in a wet environment. The refinement process was not only followed by the polishing industry, it was also understood that sequencing steps would need to follow the selected starting grit in order to have a clean, scratch free finish. The polished floors that were produced with this basic concept provided a consistent

Andy Bowman, founder of Adaptive Concrete Innovations and the chair of the CSDA (Concrete Sawing and Drilling Association) commission on polished concrete floors.

ST115 is a standard for the polishing industry that was adopted by the Concrete Sawing and Drilling Association and explains how to measure texture of a concrete surface using a texture meter. Over the past two years, I had the honour of being the chair of 16 experts in the field of surface metrology, concrete finishing, concrete repair and concrete mix designs representing five major industry associations from ACI, ASTM, ASME, ICRI, and CSDA and representing five continents. The concrete industry’s first standard document for quantifying a concrete surface by accurately reading its texture and assigning the proper designation code or surface texture grade was produced. Tower Light and Onwatch A sports car in a quarry secure Olympic Park In the UK site security specialist Onwatch have deployed three Tower Light TL security systems to help guard the Olympic Park in East London. The system is on a long term hire and will help to protect the area from trespass, vandalism and other anti-social behaviour. As the Olympic Park is often unmanned between events, close security is vital. Onwatch has provided the site with the latest TL mobile master unit accompanied by three portable slave units, wirelessly linked together, to provide close security. The system includes round the clock CCTV infra-red monitoring, which gives clear images day and night. In addition, the module is able to make audio announcements to warn intruders and has the ability to instantly contact a mobile patrol or, if necessary, the Police. The Olympic Park TL security set-up is remotely connected, by ADSL and 3G, to the Onwatch Worldwide Monitoring Service, which is a British Standard 5979 Category 2 approved worldwide monitoring control centre. The TL Master Security Tower is a mobile, self powered unit which will run for up 700h

on a single tank of fuel and the three slave units are connected to the master by a single, heavy-duty mains cable. The CCTV camera system is fitted to a vertical hydraulic mast with a public address system, anti climb bracket, heat and movement detectors, multi directional WIFI and a siren and strobe. “Our system was recommended to the site operators by an event manager, who had just staged an event at the park,” said Tower Light UK managing director Paul Hay. “The event manager was aware of our products and suggested that Onwatch would be an ideal company to provide security to the park in between events.”

Terex TL120 goes for scrap In Rzosnik, Poland, a wholesaler of metal remnants and scrap, collects material from factories all over Poland and sells it on to steel mills. The company, run by Henryk ?achacki for more than 20 years, requires specialised and durable equipment and Henryk ?achacki has extensive experience with a wide variety

of construction machines. He bought a Terex TL120 wheel loader three years ago from EWPA Maszyny Budowlane, one of the Terex distributors in Poland. He was looking for a machine that could work at any time of year and be able to clear snow and landscape the terrain where the scrap is stored. “This

Wimmer Felstechnik based in Thalgau near Salzburg, Austria, has been producing line drilling units fore more than 20 years. For block stone production extensive mechanical workmanship on the material is necessary. Line drilling units enable efficient and precise boring of holes with drill control functions being fully automatic. Until now these units have been equipped with one to three drills, but in 2012 a Scandinavian company approached Wimmer with the request to develop a unit with seven synchronous working drills. The drills had previously been designed for the use with hydraulic excavators. But the customer required an independent, electrically powered carrier module, which moved on railway tracks. For this project the company’s facility has been business needs plenty of space. Scrap metal storage sites are very large and, when we have a high number of orders, we need to be able to buy or rent additional land. Sometimes these plots need levelling and for this we need a really tough construction machine,” said ?achacki. “This Terex wheel loader can do many things and can use it for transporting materials in its bucket or as a fork lift or as a tractor. It also fits in a container so, if neces-

Multi-Kit P

The World’

Monday 9 December 2013 was an historic day for the Italian

manufacturer of hydraulic demolition tools Trevi Benne and its Swedish distributor Andersen Contractor. The manufacturer delivered its first of new multi purpose kit processors MK70 weighing 9t and is currently the world’s largest multi-kit processor. Andersen Contractor sold the first MK70 unit to the Swedish demolition contractor Rivners in Stockholm. “I am very happy that it was Rivners who was the first to invest in this tool. Firstly, the company has

the kind of big jobs suitable for a multi processor of this type and Rivners always stay at the forefront of testing new equipment,” said Andersen Contractor representative Thomas Hind.

Largest in the World The MK70 multi kit processor is suitable for carrier machines up to 100t. There are currently eight models in the MK series, which is designed for carriers in classes 9 to 100t. For each size there are the five different standard jaws of pulveriser, steel shear, concrete crusher, nibbler and a special pulveriser with dual steel blades that cut rebar while it crushes the concrete. The MK 70 is suitable for carriers between 75t and 100t and cutting power with steel shear or concrete crushing jaw is 1100t and with pulveriser jaw 490t. Trevi Benne is also launching the new sizes MK13 and MK 50. MK 13 weighs 1.4t and is suitable for 12t to 18t carrier machines. It is the smallest combi cutter with hydraulic jaws. The MK 50 weighs 6t and is suitable for carriers from 60 to 75t. Cutting power of steel shear jaw is 875t and 380t with a pulveriser jaw. “The operator can change the jaw tool in a few minutes,” said Andersen Contractor representative Svend Andersen. A MK multi-kit processor is an excellent and versatile demolition tool with high cutting force, fast

jaw movements and interchangeable jaws that can be changed in five minutes. This makes MK an effective and affordable option for demolition of concrete and steel structures and secondary crushing of concrete. Trevi Benne’s new MK70 was a good decision for Rivners. “We are very pleased with the MK70 that worked very well on its first job. It is very powerful and fast. The job has been faster than we expected and we are pretty picky when it comes to demolition tools,” said Rivners representative Richard Steen. “We also appreciated very much that the management from Trevi Benne in Italy travelled to Sweden to attend the delivery of the MK70.”

The demolition of the Nutek Building The premier demolition test with the new MK70 took place in Liljeholmen in Stockholm. Rivners was contracted to demolish the Nutek Building, which has been the headquarters of AB Atomic Energy since 1964. When the semi State agency was disbanded Nutek took over the building. Demolition started during summer 2013 and when completed in February 2014 it will be replaced by a residential building with 225 apartments. The Nutek building had 10 floors plus two basement floors. The top four and a half floors were demolished using a Brokk 400 with a 700 crusher, a

From toys to concrete crushers

Unique is a word that could best describe Darda. The German based company creates rock splitting cylinders that boast an unrivalled power to size ratio. Darda crushers and cutters are probably the most usable tools for indoor demolition jobs. But perhaps the most extraordinary thing is that these heavy-duty attachments were invented by a man whose core business was toy cars and racetracks. Andrei Bushmarin reports. Helmut Darda, who passed away this year, was a born inventor with the knack of creating small but powerful things. Whatever engineering task he set his mind to, he always tried to find a perfect balance between the power and the size of his inventions. And one can only amaze at the sheer spectrum of his creativity.

Groundbreaker Born in 1927 in Germany, Helmut Darda was an eyewit-

ness to the atrocities and the groundbreaking achievements of the twentieth century. He was an adolescent, studying machine engineering, when World War II started. Darda was drafted, and it was not until much later that he was able to complete his studies. In 1954 he went to Blumberg for work, but just four years later decided to set up his own company manufacturing stone processing and casting machines. It took him a few years of experimenting to come up with an invention that became Darda’s trademark product and laid the groundwork for its continuous growth over the future decades. The invention was a splitting cylinder, a compact yet powerful device that made demolition and rock breaking much faster and effective.

Toys Although rock-splitting cylinders were very popular with specialist contractors, it was toys that made Darda a household name. In 1970, he invented a pullback motor, which was able to propel matchbox cars at a speed of up to 50 km/h. It became a hit in the toy car industry, and throughout the ‘80s and part of the ‘90s Darda toy cars dominated the European and North American markets. That ended in 1993 when Helmut Darda decided to sell his business to the American company Life-Like Products. The old Helmut Darda Spielwaren und Maschinenbau went into history, and a new Darda Systemtechnik was formed.

No games, just tools It was Darda’s sons, Burkhard and Gerhard, who took the helm of the new company. They focused on demolition tools, and their first priority was to build on the success of the Darda splitting cylinders. Cracking devices were Darda’s main specialisation and they aimed to consolidate their leadership in that niche market. The brothers set about expanding the range of splitting cylinders, and in 1993 the world’s lightest splitting cylinder was launched. The new device generated 9.1t of splitting force for each kilogram of its weight. Three years later, Darda unveiled the world’s most powerful splitting cylinder, with maximum splitting force up to 800t. In 1997 Darda, which by then commanded an 80% share of the global market of splitting devices, received an order from the Swedish company Brokk to design a lightweight concrete crusher for its demolition robot Brokk 40. Darda also signed an exclusive distribution deal with Brokk, allowing it to sell the robots to its customers in Germany and Austria. The order proved a life changing moment for Darda, resulting in the company eventually becoming part of the Brokk Group.

Crush on Brokk

Darda marketing manager Nicole Bock.

The partnership with Brokk moved Darda’s focus away from splitting cylinders to more robot-friendly demolition attachments, such as concrete crushers and steel cutters. Within a few years, a wide range of crushers, cutters and combi-shears was designed and built. At the start of the new millennium, Darda expanded onto China by opening a sales office in Beijing.

66 PDi • Issue 6 • December 2013 • January 2014

In July 2006, the near 10 year cooperation between Darda and Brokk as independent entities ended with the buyout of 100% shares of the German company by Brokk. The takeover was seen by both parties as a marriage of mutual convenience, with Darda getting access to Brokk’s worldwide sales network and Brokk benefiting from Darda’s considerable manufacturing experience in demolition attachments. The buyout entailed no organisational changes, with the Darda management and personnel remaining intact.

We’ve got the power Darda attachments are made at its 3,500m2 facility in Blumberg. New models undergo rigorous testing at the plant and in the field, before the company considers it ready for production. Splitting cylinders remain the manufacturer’s core product, closely followed by concrete crushers and steel cutters. Darda is a mid-size company with about 50 employees. Apart from the Beijing office, which was renamed Darda-Kinshofer (Beijing) Construction Machinery in 2009. Darda also has a branch in Rheinberg, Germany. The manufacturer sells its tools worldwide through a network of 50 dealers and distributors. Having developed the European and Asian markets, Darda, is now casting its net further. According to the company, Africa and South America have the biggest growth potential. The interest in the African market is one of the reasons that Darda took part in the first Bauma Africa show. In its segment, Darda still faces little competition, its unique selling point being the low weight and compact size of the tools compared to the crushing power they generate. www.darda.de

Cut the scrap, new shears here For manufacturers of demolition attachments, scrap recycling is one of the most important markets. Even if on the global level it underperforms at the moment, in some countries the volume of processed scrap metal has grown considerably. Andrei Bushmarin reports on the latest developments.

The global market for recycling scrap is shrinking according to US Genesis Attachments business development director David Palvere. The general sales director of Dutch manufacturer Rotar, Louis Broekhuizen agrees, but points out that recycling in the BRICS countries is still growing, which in part offsets the negative trend. He also contends that increasingly more demolition contractors tend to choose specialized scrap shears over combi-shears with scrap jaws. This results in a high density of scrap shears in some areas, especially in the countries, which are well advanced in scrap recycling. Both managers say that customers, first and foremost, are concerned with performance of their tools. Sometimes a shear’s performance is lower than expected due to the backpressures and the system’s inner resistances. This leads to higher fuel consumption, increased ownership costs and disrupted deadlines. It also puts a large dent in users’ trust in a manufacturer’s products. It is vital, therefore, to achieve a balance between the hydraulic systems of the host carrier or excavator and the shears by ironing out all these backpressures. Availability of the wear parts is also of utmost importance, because every contractor looks to minimise downtime of their equipment. Competition is getting tougher as European manufacturers are closing the gap between the quality of their products and that of their American counterparts, the industry’s acknowledged trendsetters.

The Netherlands The Netherlands is one of the world’s most advanced countries for recycling. With very little space, dense population and a well-developed industrial sector, any kind of industrial and household waste, debris and scrap must be recycled quickly and efficiently.

scrap shears with a new model. Weighing 13t to 20t, boom or stick-mounted, the RSS 20 is designed for high-reach demolition. The integral hydraulic cylinder with an integrated speed valve and very wide bores ensures minimal resistance in the hydraulic system while generating high cutting forces. The optimized oil flow reduces fuel consumption of the carrier machine and helps extend the lifetime of components. It also means lower operating costs and reduced impact on the environment. The new shears are available with premium or standard quality cutting blades. As soon as the RSS 20 hit the market, Rotar started working on a new 12t model, the RSS 150.

models, ranging in weight from 450kg to 20t. While the shears are made of Hardox-400 steel, the jaw blades are hardened tool steel HSSM35 to ensure longer life. The blades are interchangeable, with four cutting edges. A special blade on the tip makes welding unnecessary. All models come complete with speed valve, heavy-duty double ball bearing swivel head and rotation motor. The HSS-series covers the range of carriers from 3t to 280t.

France France may not be overcrowded with attachment manufacturers but there are still some big players there. Arden Equipment based in Charleville-Mézières is one of them. Last year, the manufacturer, which produces a full range of attachments for demolition and recycling, launched an extensive modernization program aimed at upgrading its scrap shears series.

Arden launched three new models

www.rotar.com FRD diversifies into scrap shears business Despite the volatility of iron and steel prices in the last few years, FRD Europe reaffirms its commitment to the scrap shear industry. At Bauma, FRD Europe debuted the VR series of scrap shears. The new series consists of nine models, fitting 2.5t to 110t excavators. Five models are 360° rotatable. Made of Hardox-400 steel, all shears are equipped with a speed valve and interchangeable piercing tips and blades. All models feature an adjuster on the mobile jaw that aligns it with the main body. The cylinder has a reverse position to ensure protection of the rod by the shear frame.

Arden Equipment unveiled three new models of scrap shears at Bauma. Fitting 9t to 21t, 12t to 30t and 34t to 90t carrier machines respectively, the AS-014R45, AS-021R56-SV and the AS-073R70/80-SV represent the ultimate step in Arden’s modernisation programme, which the manufacturer started in 2012 by upgrading the AS-030R model. Arden has succeeded in improving the shears’ cutting performance without increasing the tool weight. The shears are now equipped with a new kinematic system, which optimises the cutting torque during the closing cycle, a speed valve and more durable wear parts. There are also some improvements linked to scrap processing applications, such as less jamming when cutting thin metal sheets or cable, better cutting of steel sections, more precise guiding of the mobile jaw and enhanced durability of the jaw’s front part. Two more scrap shear models the AS-042R and the AS-055R are on test and scheduled for launch late 2014.

Group. VTN shears are multi-task tools, suitable for both overhead demolition of iron structures and ground level jobs in foundries and scrap yards. The attachments fit excavators ranging in weight from 2.5t to 110t. The new tip is made of two parts, which makes replacement and maintenance easier. The tip is bolted to the jaws and is equipped with an internal brake for more resistance and longer life. A double guiding device for the moving jaws ensures precise alignment. The re-designed blades can be exchanged four times before replacement. The rhomboidal profile improves cutting performance and reduces stress on the shear. The way the new blades are threaded enables an easy set up and replacement. The jaw adjustment kit allows users to eliminate the play of the pin, which can be removed for maintenance.

Indeco, based in Bari, and best known for its hydraulic breakers, began manufacturing scrap shears in 2010. This year Indeco has extended its product range with a compact model designed for 10t excavators. The new ISS 10-20 comes with the same features as the rest of the range, such as the dual-profile piercing tip, four reversible and interchangeable blades, dual blade-guide system and cutting register adjustment system. Other features include a regeneration valve, a heavy-duty pivot group to keep the jaws aligned and prevent buckling, a large and powerful hydraulic cylinder and robust and durable seals that can withstand pressure of up to 700 bar.

the company managed to come up with a damage containment strategy and quickly return the factory’s capacity back to 70%. The Mirandola plant produces crushers, pulverisers and Mantovanibenne’s trademark product, scrap shears Eagle. The new Eagle II range features re-designed jaw and interchangeable and reversible blades. The Eagle II shears are fitted with speed valves, bigger cylinders and forged cylinder rod. Models weighing over 7t come equipped with the Manto-Autolube, an in-house shear greasing system.

US manufacturers have long been the trendsetters in scrap recycling. Companies like Genesis Attachments and Stanley LaBounty set the standards for others to follow. But, little by little, their European competitors are beginning to turn the tables on the leaders. To stay ahead of the pack, the American manufacturers have to come up with something new all the time.

Genesis introduces four new models

www.vtngroup.com

Mantovanibenne’s Eagle raises from ashes In 2012, a series of earthquakes rocked the north of Italy. The epicentre was near Mirandola, the home of Mantovanibenne. As a result, its factory was severely damaged and had to be rebuilt. After the initial shock,

Genesis Attachments has added four new XT mobile shear models, increasing the line to eight. The new GXT 445 and GXT 775 straight and rotator models join the GXT 555 and GXT 665 models introduced at Bauma. According to David Palvere, the new GXT mobile shears are a big success with scrap processors and demolition contractors because they fit smaller carriers, which reduces users’ initial acquisition and hourly energy consumption costs. The GXT shears have an apex, where most cutting is done, positioned closer to the back of the jaws, which improves material gathering and increases cutting performance while reducing maintenance. The GTX range also features a weld-on, replaceable, abrasion-resistant steel rhino horn protecting the front and top of the upper jaw. The dual guide blade matches piercing tip length, enabling blades to be shimmed independently to accommodate piercing tip wear.

Trevi Benne prefers Marilyn Trevi Benne’s series of scrap shears is called Marilyn. It includes 12 models, ranging from the tiny 300kg CS 03R to the gigantic CS 200RS, weighing over 19t. The jaw geometry and the blade configuration enable a clean linear cut of scrap metal. The blade tip enhances the piercing capacity, while the blade guide makes sure the blade stays aligned during the cutting cycle. The shears come complete with a multiplier speed valve, a guide disk for jaw alignment, a device reducing play of the pin, reversible and adjustable blades, and the interchangeable tip blade. In addition the Marilyn shears offer continuous hydraulic rotation, manual regulation of the rotation

“No signs of movement in Spain until 2015” The public works, construction and mining machinery show SMOPYC, will be held in Zaragoza, Spain on 1 to 5 April 2014. Zaragoza Exhibition Centre director José Antonio Vicente offers his expectations. PDi reports. With six months to go until SMOPYC 2014 and, looking at the evolution of the sector in recent months, do you think last year’s success will be repeated? I think we have to be optimistic, yet realistic and proactive. An economic recovery is now being discussed in many arenas, but the building industry doesn’t have the same outlook. In fact, the latest forecasts by Euroconstruct for construction in our country suggest no signs of movement until 2015. A lot of firms have repositioned, downsized and looked outside of Spain. SMOPYC is a first-rate marketing tool and one of the mainstays for the industry’s business purposes. In 2011 there were 1,253 exhibitors and 89,000 visitors came. We are hoping to repeat that. Does this mean the market in machinery sales has hit rock bottom? Some experts believe so and that the market in new machinery sales cannot fall much farther, so by late 2013 there might be a shift in this trend. Another widespread opinion is that this crisis will serve to harness and boost productivity, with greater specialisation in machinery and a search for lower fuel consumption. What are SMOPYC’s strengths and why is it important to attend this year‘s show? An event that is about to turn 40 builds up knowhow that is invaluable for exhibitors and visitors. The event is trusted by professionals and unconditionally supported by the sector. With great facilities, a large exhibition space and spacious outdoor areas for demonstrations, the most affordable rates possible and advertising and communications support, the conclusion is that participation in SMOPYC 2014 should be compulsory. What role does Spanish equipment play on the international stage? The Spanish construction machinery industry has a solid reputation in international markets. It is usual to find Spanish manufacturers with significant market shares. Logically, the crisis has affected exports, but there is a growing presence of Spanish machinery in markets like the Middle East, the States and Asia. The Spanish offer is based on high-tech machinery that is good value and more competitively priced than German, Japanese and American machinery, which has historically dominated the sector. Our machinery is of a very high quality as it abides by European legislation. What strategies are to be used in such a critical times? Three basic tools: internationalisation, innovation

and diversification. As is tirelessly repeated, internationalisation is not an option; it is an obligation for the survival of companies. Companies need to have versatile structures to adapt to markets and overcome the hurdles thrown up in internationalisation processes. For this reason innovation is just as important. Not just products but also organisation. Companies need to be open to new processes and partnerships. As regards diversification, companies can and should look at other sectors that could be candidates for the use of machinery that has traditionally been used for construction, such as materials handling, recycling, scrap, landfill management and the farming and forestry industries. How does SMOPYC’s international vocation present itself and how can it help firms devise their own stratgies for internationalisation? Internationalisation is an ongoing activity at SMOPYC; it is at its very core. SMOPYC could be a huge help for firms, establishing synergies, facilitating contacts and enhancing services to attract international visitors. SMOPYC 2014 began working on international promotion on the 2011 event ended. We have attended all the international construction events contacting potential customers and stimulate our companies’ exporting activity. Business meetings and international commerce missions are arranged to put suppliers in contact with buyers. From the point of view of the organisation, which aspects have been enhanced for this year’s show? The main areas of work we have enhanced include widening the show’s international appeal, making it a framework for a variety of industry-wide events, and boosting RDI through our awards for technological in-

novation. We have been working to achieve a competitive show, with rates adjusted to the situation the market is experiencing. Similarly, we have favourable arrangements in place with local hotels and with Renfe, the railway network, and Iberia, the airline. This year’s show coincides with the prestigious International PILOT Show. How could this affect SMOPYC? Although they are different shows they share significant features, such as the logistics of infrastructures. This subject will be broached at the Congress and will see the participation of our country’s leading building companies, thereby forging strong ties with SMOPYC. It is certain to be a very positive relationship for both shows. SMOPYC 2014 will be a major showcase for innovation, an aspect that is shored up by your awards for technological innovation. What do you think is in store for public works machinery in terms of innovation? Our awards for technological innovation are a firmly established tradition. In terms of trends in innovation, it is clear that technological enhancements focus on increasing the productivity of systems and equipment, making them more user and environmentally friendly. The main challenges for new developments lie in achieving more power, greater efficiency and lower fuel consumption. Lastly, what message would you send to SMOPYC 2014 participants? SMOPYC 2014 will have huge international repercussions and it will be the show of the year. It will be filled with opportunities. Exhibitors will find new opportunities for business and business contacts and visitors will have access to information on everything that is happening in the sector.

Chicago Pneumatic breaker boost production

A Chicago Pneumatic RX46 rig mounted breaker is helping Ballut Blocks, one of Malta’s largest civil engineering contractors, to meet challenging productivity targets on a major project involving the excavation of 1Mm3 of rock over four years without the use of explosives. The RX46 breaker, weighing 3t, is one of the largest used on Malta and was supplied by Swaey Bros, CP’s sole distributor on the island. “We recommended the RX46 to Ballut Blocks because it offers exceptional breaking performance combined with excellent value for money,” said Swaey assistant managing director Quintin Vella. “In addition, like all CP products, it features robust construction to ensure that it has a long life even in tough operating conditions, and it is easy to maintain and service. In a nutshell, the RX46 was without question the best breaker for the job.” Key benefits of the RX series include a power boost feature that harnesses recoil energy to achieve greater breaking performance without requiring additional hydraulic input, energy efficient gas/oil hybrid technology, and advanced noise and vibration damping technology. In addition the latest models include a reinforced breaker box design with rock claws. “We’ve been using breakers from CP for more than five years and we are very happy with them said,” Ballut Blocks managing director Paul Vella. “They’re reliable and durable, and they require very little maintenance. And, on the few occasions when we have needed parts and assistance, we’ve had an excellent response from both CP and Swaey.” Ballut Blocks’ RX46 breaker has lived up to expectations and also delivered an unexpected bonus. Analysis of the fuel usage by the carrier to which the breaker is attached has shown that this has fallen by 5% since the RX46 has been in use, in spite of the new breaker’s greater productivity. For Ballut Blocks investing in a RX46 rig mounted breaker has provided the double benefits of increased productivity and significant savings in operating costs.

CSDA’s 2014 convention programme

In the US the Concrete Sawing and Drilling Association’s 42nd annual convention and technical fair will be held in Tucson, Arizona, at the Westin La Paloma Resort and Spa on 11-15 March 2014. To provide cutting, polishing and imaging professionals from around the world with an exciting convention programme, the CSDA has engaged a keynote speaker to help direct businesses to new horizons. David Levin will discuss ‘the question behind the question’ and give business owners the tools they need to increase personal accountability in their companies. Levin’s presentation is based on his book QBQ! The Question Behind the Question, in which he uses language based techniques to turn negative questions associated with whining, blaming others or entitlement thinking, into positive questions that will breed better workplace attitudes and encourage everyone to be accountable for their actions and decisions. The 2014 convention will also feature technical presentations and informative business sessions led by experienced contractors and manufacturers. Presentations will include guidance for small businesses preparing for the implementation of the Affordable Care Act, provide insight into the use of underwater cutting techniques and discuss the development of universal standards for the concrete polishing industry. In addition, a Tech Fair is scheduled for manufacturers to meet one-on-one with customers and showcase their new products and technologies. Convention delegates will also have the opportunity to enjoy all that this desert oasis has to offer. The annual CSDA Manufacturers’ Night will consist of a visit to the Pima Air and Space Museum, where CSDA past president Tom Stowell will be honoured with the CSDA Lifetime Achievement Award. Delegates can also build relationships during optional activities like the Colossal Cave tour, a desert horseback trail ride or taking on the four wheel Jeep rally challenge. Owners and managers of concrete cutting, polishing and imaging companies as well as representatives from manufacturers and distributors who support the industry with products and services, attend the CSDA Annual Convention.

The programme then returned to CSDA’s primary Florida training facility in November for its traditional week of certification courses at the Clearwater campus of St. Petersburg College. CSDA had a good response to these courses, with 14 operators being certified in slab sawing, core drilling, wall sawing and wire sawing techniques. This was one of the largest groups certified at one time since the programme launched in 1995. In addition, this year’s courses presented the students with a challenge that would put their skills to the test and help the college. The association has held a partnership with St. Petersburg College’s corporate training department for 12 years and has been mutually beneficial for both parties, and especially so this year. The campus had three concrete structures that once housed cooling units, but now required removal, so the operators were taken from CSDA’s usual demonstration slab and given specific sawing and drilling tasks to bring down the structures with speed and precision. “I learned that attention to detail in the finer aspects of setup and job planning is critical to production output and diamond tool life,” said Super City Concrete Cutting owner and CSDA sister Australia association president Jason Franken. Franken participated in the courses to gather information that will help to establish a similar programme in his native country. “This experience will assist in developing our own qualifications and has provided a starting platform for this process,” said Franken. “St. Petersburg College Corporate Training is proud to assist in providing professional workforce training to the concrete cutting profession that will benefit entry level and seasoned professionals. Our partnership with the CSDA provides U.S. and international companies with the skills necessary for key projects in the important industries of construction, renovation and demolition,” said SPC Corporate Training Director James Connolly. “CSDA stepped up and helped us demolish existing structures at the Clearwater Campus, saving the college time and money. We look forward to our continuing partnership with this outstanding organization”

MGL Demolition adds Sandvik crusher

In the UK MGL Demolition specialises in demolition, dismantling, licensed asbestos removal, land remediation and recycling, with operations across the UK in a multitude of business sectors. To stay competitive and ensure that the right equipment is used on the right application MGL has added a Sandvik QJ341 tracked jaw crusher to its fleet. MGL applies the waste strategy of reduce, reuse, recycle. “One of the distinct advantages of the QJ341 is that due to its inherent transportability from site to site, and manoeuvrability around site, it is able to go direct to the material, and reduce it for reuse on-site,” said MGL managing director Mark Davison. “This not only provides material for use straight away, but reduces haulage costs, as well as being environmentally sustainable.” The new QJ341 has recently been used to crush 75mm demolition material on a variety of projects. The flexibility and productivity of the machine is ensured due to its a 1200mm x 750mm feed opening, hydraulically adjustable CSS, high reduction ratios, crushing speed and efficiency. Additionally the crusher possesses a reverse crushing action to relieve blockages, plus an automatic central lubrication system. The QJ341 is the latest in a line of Sandvik tracked jaw crushers. MGL’s QJ341 comes with features that ensure continuous, uninterrupted crushing and greater operator safety. These include a load control system for the feeder drive, level sensor fitted to the jaw, and speed wheel fitted to the main conveyor. The main conveyor is fitted with a raise and lower facility for increased magnet clearance together with ease of transportation. “The crusher has enabled us to enjoy lower running costs, a lower carbon footprint and increased productivity, which means we are operating a more environmentally friendly and efficient machine,” said Davison.
