Bespoke adventuring in Sabi Sands One of the most storied private-use villas in South Africa, Singita Castelton was once the home of the grandfather of company founder Luke Bailes, the man responsible for introducing Singita’s unique blend of safari chic across the African continent. The private estate comprising six individual cottages accommodating up to 12 guests, has entered the new decade with a few timely additions, including a new yoga pavilion to complement a state-of-the-art fitness centre and new spa treatment rooms set within the estate’s private gardens. Some of the original antiques and furnishings from the farmhouse have been refashioned and the living areas extended onto covered verandas overlooking the nearby waterhole. Oenophiles will also appreciate the addition of an expanded wine cellar stocked with some of South Africa’s finest labels, where guests can gather for a sommelier-led pre-prandial tasting. Located in the heart of the Sabi Sands Game Reserve surrounded by 45,000 acres of wilderness, Singita Castelton offers guests the chance to plot their own bespoke safari itinerary each day. A private safari vehicle is available for twice-daily game drives, and a team of staff including field guide, private chef, house manager and host are on hand to cater to every whim. All-inclusive rates start from approximately US $17,500 per night for up to eight guests. www.singita.com
Travel through the ages with ATM If you think age doesn’t affect the way we travel, think again. The latest research from Expedia Group Media Solutions shows that different demographics prioritise different elements of the travel experiences when it comes to booking their next trip. Understanding the preferences and expectations of these groups enables marketers within the US $183 billion dollar-a-year tours and activities market to better target their intended customers, according to Arabian Travel Market (ATM) Exhibition Director ME, Danielle Curtis. “Although all generations are now looking for activities and experiences, above all else, what makes this market more complex, is the individual preferences and demands of each generation and of course ultimately, the challenge facing marketers trying to engage

with them,” she explained ahead of the 2020 edition of the region’s biggest travel exhibition, which takes place at Dubai World Trade Centre from April 19-22, 2020. Baby Boomers born between 1946 and 1964 favour safety, security and service when it comes to selecting their travel destinations and tend to be less concerned about budget than other demographics. Gen X travellers between the ages of 40 and 56 generally travel less because of career commitments, but when they do get away, they tend to opt for relaxing escapes that allow them to fully switch off. Some 70 per cent of this demographic enjoy museums, historical sites and art galleries when they travel, according to the research. Generation Y and Millennials aged between 25 and 39 are the most frequent travellers and tend to prefer adventurous and experiential
trips. Though they are more careful about budgeting, they are the largest spenders overall due to their large numbers. Some 90 per cent of Generation Z travellers, those up to the age of 24, are inspired by peers on social media and are comfortable researching, planning and booking trips from their mobile phones. “One emerging trend travel and tourism experts will be watching is Generation Alpha, the children of the Millennials. According to Skift these kids, born after 2010, will start making their own travel arrangements well before the end of this decade and there is a belief that they are expected to be even more disruptive than their parents,” said Curtis. Visitors can learn more about the latest trends affecting the way people book their travel during the seminar programme at this year’s ATM. www.arabiantravelmarket.wtm.com

Mövenpick sets sights on Red Sea Riviera The US $2 billion Port Ghalib waterfront development in Marsa Alam is set to up the ante for luxury living on Egypt’s Red Sea Riviera, with a collection of world-class resorts, elegant golf estates and luxury beachfront villas spread across 18 kilometres of pristine beachfront. Mövenpick Port Ghalib will become the jewel in the crown of the visionary project when it opens in 2022, with 350 luxurious rooms and suites and seven restaurants, bars and lounges in addition to a spa, gym, kids club, swimming pool and dive centre. The resort will be the fifth Mövenpick resort and the 12th Accor property on the Egyptian Riviera. More international cruise did companies included Oman you in their itineraries than HEAR? ever before last year, as the Sultanate reported a 44 per cent rise in the number of cruise tourists compared to the previous year. A beachfront abode fit for a king
With its unrivalled collection of beach escapes, urban hideaways and destination resorts, Dubai sets the bar high when it comes to fabulous accommodation. But the new Royal Penthouse at Mandarin Oriental Jumeira, Dubai, raises the bar another notch, with a truly spectacular beachfront setting that’s too good not to share with friends. Which is fine, because the palatial suite has an enormous living room elegantly appointed in hues of sapphire and gold, with wraparound balcony that extends to the 16-seat dining room, a high-spec sound system and a full-service bar area where a round-the-clock butler can mix drinks for any occasion. A marble staircase next to the suite’s private lift leads up to a landscaped rooftop terrace with sunbeds and dining area with magnificent ocean views. Guests who prefer to lounge closer to the beach can access a private beach cabana at any time.
The gorgeous ocean-facing master bedroom is surrounded by floor-toceiling windows that look out across the turquoise waters of the Arabian Gulf, and the marble-clad en-suite bathroom features a freestanding bathtub with equally impressive views. At 850sqm, the Royal Penthouse is one of the biggest in the city, but it’s the soft touches that make this regal abode extra special. Two walk-in wardrobes will be fitted out with pieces from Burberry’s latest ready-to-wear collection, including several exclusive outfits that are available for purchase. Additionally, Royal Penthouse guests will be offered an exclusive menu of petiscos (sharing plates) created by Michelin-starred chef José Avillez, whose sixth-floor restaurant Tasca is the first outside his native Portugal, as well as complimentary spa treatments and mini bar, and the services of a personal stylist. www.mandarinoriental.com

bucolic beauty
One of our favourite ways to escape the urbanity of Dubai is to book into somewhere bucolic, where trees and greenery give life. Melia Desert Palm is one such place, where its polo fields, stables, verdant grounds and rural vibe conjure up provincial idylls. You can languish by the infinity pool, eat al fresco at Epicure, dine on sublime starlit steak at Rare, surrender yourself to Samana Spa, then rest your head in a beautiful Polo Suite with ground-level views of equestrian action outside. Oh, and if you book directly through the hotel’s website, before March 8th, with its ‘Get Set For Summer’ campaign, you’ll receive up to 45 per cent off your stay. Green and good. www.melia.com
