September 2020, Issue 167 Publisher: Anna Zhukov anna@dotwnews.com Editor-in-Chief: Emily Baxter-Priest emily@dotwnews.com Editor-at-Large: Joe Mortimer joe@dotwnews.com IT Executive & Web Developer: Shyam Sundar Nalluri shyam@wnnlimited.com Sales Director: Matthew McQueen matthew.mcqueen@dotwnews.com Sales Manager: Aysha Chapti aysha@dotwnews.com Circulation department: circulate@dotwnews.com Finance department: accounts@wnnlimited.com Contributors: Sarah Freeman, Kris Karacinski

I’ve been lucky enough to call Dubai home for 13 years now, and despite many a weekend away exploring intriguing corners of the Emirates – from hiking in Hatta to kayaking through the mangroves to seeking seclusion at Qasr Al Sarab in the Empty Quarter – I know that I’ve barely scratched the surface of what the beautiful United Arab Emirates has to offer. With many still shying away from longhaul holidays in lieu of weekends away closer to home, this issue we bring you some of our favourite staycations from across the UAE, hopefully helping you to find your perfect destination without the need to pack your passport. The best bit is, we can support local businesses as we go about our mini-breaks, which gives a getaway a sense of goodness, too. Travel means different things to different people, determined by a multitude of factors: time, value, purpose, destination… Now, more than ever, people are re-evaluating why they need to go, where, and with whom. One such traveller is Sarah Freeman, a journalist with umpteen globetrotting adventures under belt. For this issue, she ventures to Bali for an enlightening holiday centred around Balinese arts and culture. Dive in on page 38 for an absorbing account of Asian traditions, rituals and the reward one can reap from truly immersing themselves in their surrounds. I too immerse myself in culture with a weekend away at Al Maha Desert Resort & Spa. Steeped in Arabian heritage and blanketed in both tranquillity and nature, it offers an agrarian adventure like no other. Surrounded by undulating sand dunes and roaming Arabian Oryx, it proves that with an escape punctuated with as much serenity and singularity as this, why the need to go anywhere else? Until next month, may your travels be rich, wide and wonderful wherever they take you...

Hooves and homebrew in the northern Serengeti

Twice a year, the Mara River becomes the scene of the greatest wildlife movement on earth, as millions of wildebeest, zebra and other mammals cross the waterway in search of better grazing. Moving from the northern Serengeti in Tanzania to the Maasai Mara in Kenya, this Great Migration is a perpetual journey of life and death and one of the most thrilling natural spectacles for intrepid travellers. Less than a kilometre from the southern bank of the Mara, Asilia Africa’s Sayari Camp has reopened just in time for the start of the northward crossing, following a complete rebuild from the ground up. Overseen by Cape Town-based designer and long-term Asilia

collaborator Caline Williams-Wynn, the camp’s new look was inspired by the colourful culture of the northern Serengeti’s indigenous Kuria people, who are depicted throughout in original prints by South African fine art photographer Graham Springer. Traditional Kuria instruments are on display in the main building, where a music station gives guests the chance to listen to songs recorded in the villages around the Serengeti. Fifteen spacious tents pay tribute to nearby Turner Hill in their design, with flat tops rising above canvas roofs and spacious outdoor decks that wrap around the tents, affording front row seats from which to observe the wildlife that

moves freely through the camp. A conservation and community-focused safari brand with 19 properties in Kenya, Tanzania and Zanzibar, Asilia Africa has been carbon neutral since 2009 and continues to come up with new ways to reduce its carbon footprint. Perhaps the most innovative to date is the installation at Sayari of a solarpowered micro-brewery, which produces four homemade brews as well as purified sparkling water on site, reducing the need to import cans and plastic bottles to the camp. Prices start from US $815 per person per night. www.asiliaafrica.com

Banyan Tree plants roots in the Saudi desert The ancient trade routes that once snaked across the Arabian Peninsula converged at important crossroads; waypoints on the arduous journey north to Egypt and the Levant. AlUla was one such place, a vibrant oasis town in the northern part of modern-day Saudi Arabia, where caravans stopped to rest and mighty tombs were built in honour of the ancient rulers of Lihyan and the Nabataean Kingdom. Today, AlUla is going through something of a rebirth, as luxury hotel companies converge on the sublime desert scenery with plans to create remote hideaways and provide a base from which to explore the

extraordinary landscape and well-preserve historic monuments. Banyan Tree is the latest brand to set its sights on the area, following an agreement to take over and expand the existing Ashar Resort, where low-profile tented villas blend into the landscape. Following a major expansion, the resort will grow to 82 private villas, as well as a luxury spa and several new restaurants, all set within the majestic natural scenery of the Ashar Valley, 15 kilometres from Hegra, the first UNESCO World Heritage Site in Saudi Arabia, where some 150 tombs pepper the sandstone cliffs. www.accor.com

Strung out along the Mediterranean coast, the one-, two- and three-bedroom villas each feature their own private pool and sun terrace, plus indoor and outdoor living and dining areas and a fully equipped kitchen. Inside, the blue, gold and white interiors create a sense of calm and tranquillity in the bright and airy villas, accentuated by contemporary artworks inspired by the sea. Experience the UAE desert with The Luxury Collection

Locals say that to discover the true character of Abu Dhabi, visitors must experience the vast expanse of its interior, where endless deserts, enormous salt flats and fertile wetlands support a huge variety of bird and wildlife and the Bedouin culture that shaped the formation of the emirate. Situated on the edge of the desert 30 minutes from Downtown Abu Dhabi, Al Wathba, a Luxury Collection Desert Resort & Spa, Abu Dhabi, is perfectly positioned for guests to explore the natural landscapes and Bedouin history of the UAE capital. Here, 103 rooms and villas showcase traditional mashrabiya architecture, Arabesque design and Bedouin style furnishings, in an understated palette of neutral colours evoking the spirit of the desert. Guests can explore independently or on guided tours, uncovering

natural wonders such as the Al Wathba Wetlands, home to 4,000 greater flamingos, the mighty sabkhas (salt flats) or the surreal landscape of Fossil Dunes, where wind-sculpted sandstone rock formations rise from the desert; or learn about camel racing and falconry from local experts. Back at the resort, Al Wathba Spa provides the ultimate tonic after days spent exploring, with a programme of immersive healing rituals and relaxing body treatments and the chance to unwind in a traditional Turkish hammam, healing crystal salt sauna or the IceLab Cryo experience. get me to the greek Definitely one to sneak in before the winter, Lindos Imperial Resort & Spa is a majestic, family-friendly property on the idyllic and unspoilt Kiotari Beach, on the southeastern coast of Rhodes Island. The sprawling resort lays claim to four freshwater swimming pools, two children’s pools and a huge activity pool with six waterslides, speaking to the big kid in all of us. Its beachside location on the soft pebble-flanked Aegean Sea, invites both seaside and poolside lounging, as well as a full roster of water sports, such as jet-skiing and kitesurfing. The resort is heavy on the family-comesfirst ethos, meaning little travellers take precedence. But with the resort’s amazing Mini and Teens Club available, it frees you up for beachfront yoga, tennis, horse-riding, cookery classes, or a ‘jeep safari’ around Rhodes. After a day of exploring, put your feet up at Evridiki Spa – you’ll be grateful you did. For an early bird deal, book before December 31, for a stay between April 24 and October 31, 2021, and save 20 per cent off your booking. www.lindos-imperial.gr

escape back to nature Do things a little differently this autumn courtesy of The Kiroro resort – a pristine gem in the heart of Hokkaido, Japan’s second largest island. Typically a ski resort and self proclaimed ‘five star by nature’, the region is just as good before the snow starts to fall, when the Yoichi mountain peaks are blanketed in greenery and fresh air, stunning environs and customised wellness experiences await. One particular offer stands out this autumn, which is the Otaru Cruise package. Centred around a day cruise through the Otaru and Yoichi sea, it’s rich with seascape and romance, canapes

and cocktails. It includes overnight accommodation and transport to and from Otaru Port. Once back on dry land at The Kiroro, a Tribute Portfolio Hotel, guests can clink glasses at the OcciGabi Winemaker’s Dinner on October 24, where winemaker Kichiro Ochi will join Kiroro’s Exec Sous Chef, Joshua Seeds, and Japanese chef Takanashi, to serve up a ‘Farm to Plate’ tasting menu featuring Japanese delicacies alongside OcciGabi wines.
