Travel in style with Marriott and Quintessentially L u x u ry t r av e l c o n c i e r g e Q u i n t e s s e n t i a lly a n d Ma r r i o t t International’s luxury brand portfolio MILUX have teamed up to create a collection of unique hotel and destination experiences in cities around the Middle East and Africa that showcase the best of each location in style. From helicopter flights, private cruises and art collections in Doha to camel racing, desert adventures and kayak tours in Abu Dhabi, private experiences cater to all tastes and are entirely customisable. Couples in need of post-lockdown pampering could treat themselves to ‘Sand, Sun and Skyscrapers in Dubai and Seychelles’: a twin-
stop break celebrating the highlights of both destinations in one luxury-packed itinerary, including accommodation at Bvlgari Resort Dubai and North Island, a Luxury Collection Resort, in the Seychelles. After enjoying the spoils of Dubai, including a private dinner among the dunes and an astronomer-guided star-gazing session, guests will explore the postcard-perfect beaches and hidden bays of the Seychelles on private cruises, marking the end of each day with sundowners by the bonfire. In Jeddah, families can draw back the curtain on this city by the sea and spend a few days exploring the traditional streets of the Balad
neighbourhood and wandering the labyrinthine lanes of Souq Al Alawi. A culinary smorgasbord awaits, from street-stall shawarmas to the more elaborate offerings at The Ritz-Carlton, Jeddah: home-from-home for the duration of the trip. Beyond the city limits, visitors will take a day trip to Sharm Obhur, where the warm, clear Red Sea is perfect for an afternoon snorkelling among the coral reefs, and learning more about the marine environment at Al Fakieh Aquarium back in the city. The fully customisable two- to four-night journeys are available until the end of August and start from US $3,000. www.quintessentially.com/marriott-experiences
Discover the true colours of Marrakech
After visiting Marrakech for the first time, fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent famously said: “Marrakech taught me colour. Before Marrakech, everything was black.” It’s a sentiment shared by many visitors to the Moroccan city, where everything from the carpet shops of the medina to the striking landscape of the Atlas Mountains radiates in vivid hues. Travellers staying at La Sultana Marrakech, a boutique hotel and architectural marvel in the heart of the old town, can dive into this kaleidoscope of colour during a series of immersive new experiences that put them at the heart of local traditions and culture. From late October to mid-November, the foothills of the Atlas Mountains are covered in a blanket of purple crocus flowers, the delicate bloom from which saffron spice is extracted. After an early start for the hour-long drive
20

to Ourika Valley, one of the best saffron-growing regions in the world, guests will find themselves surrounded by vast fields of purple, dotted with groups of local women who come together to pluck the flowers. Slightly further out, travellers can visit a Berber community in the foothills of the Atlas Mountains where, after a hike through emerald hillsides and an open-air picnic, they’ll visit the home of a local family for a cup of mint tea and have the chance to chat about the Berber way of life. Alternatively, those who prefer not to venture too far from the city can arrange a private visit of the former home of fashion creative Yves Saint Laurent, Villa Oasis, to see how the designer was inspired by the colours, culture and creativity of this extraordinary city. Room rates start from US $459 per night. www.lasultanahotels.com

Ras Al Khaimah doubles down on adventure investments The emirate of Ras Al Khaimah is home to a wealth of natural landscapes that make it incredibly appealing for travellers in search of an active escape. From the craggy peaks of the Hajar Mountains and the vast deserts of its interior, to the 64 kilometres of stunning beaches that line the Arabian Gulf, Ras Al Khaimah has it all. Capitalising on these natural assets, the government has announced a US $136 million investment drive that will fund more than 20 sustainable tourism projects across the emirate, supporting its goal to attract three million tourists annually by 2025. Jebel Jais, the highest mountain in the UAE and a hub for active adventures, is among the main benefactors of the fund, which will see the creation of mountain resorts, a fixed base hot air ballooning platform, a food and beverage village with food trucks and an openair cinema, alongside the Bear Grylls Survival Academy, all set amid the sublime mountain landscape. Eco-based Earth Hotels Altitude promises cliffside pop-up accommodation with spectacular views; Saij, A Mantis Collection Mountain Lodge
will offer nature-based experiences, mindful pursuits and creative experiences with 35 luxury lodges; and Cloud7 Camp Jebel Jais will be home to 30 sustainably-built glamping pods. The new hospitality offerings mean visitors won’t have to travel far between their accommodation and the numerous outdoor experiences on the mountain, from guided hikes and mountain biking to paragliding, hot air ballooning and the adrenaline-pumping Jebel Jais Flight, the world’s longest zip line. Elsewhere, the investment will see the development of a mega beachfront project – complete with marine district, aqua park, trampolining and fitness and dining options – and the unique Scallop Ranch, where visitors will be able to dive for farmed oysters and scallops, watch live cooking shows and learn more about the marine eco-system. All the new developments will be created in line with the emirate’s ongoing partnership with environmental consultancy and certification provider EarthCheck, which is working with the hospitality industry to create sustainable practices. www.visitrasalkhaimah.com
Renaissance did Downtown you HEAR? Hotel, Dubai, which heralded the beginning of a new era of design-driven Renaissance properties when it opened in 2017, is closing its doors this year and re-emerging as The St. Regis Downtown Dubai. When it reopens, the hotel will be the fourth St. Regis hotel in the UAE, following the opening of The St. Regis Dubai, The Palm this month.
Say hello to Maua and Bohemia Collection Every crisis presents an opportunity, and for Swiss-Belhotel International, that meant the chance to create two stylish new brands designed to create unique and inspiring experiences for a new wave of increasingly demanding travellers. The first, Maua, is a wellness-focused brand designed to instil peace and health in exclusive, isolated and eco-friendly settings around the world. Inspired by Maori culture and language, “Maua’s brand story is built around togetherness, strength of people and nature,” says Gavin M. Faull, chairman and president of Swiss-Belhotel International. The second brand, Bohemia Collection, is all about individual luxury, with a focus on vibrant,
personalised experiences. “When the guests arrive in these hotels, they should feel like they have stepped into a timeless space, with exotic sensuality, which is vibrant and chic. The brand’s appeal lies in being raw, vivid and dreamy,” Faull adds. The new entities are still in their infancy, but the company is talking to its existing hotel owner partners to develop the two brands. Last month also saw the opening of two new Swiss-Belhotel properties in Bahrain: Grand Swiss-Belhotel Waterfront Seef – the first incarnation of the new upscale, five-star Grand Swiss-Belhotel brand – and Swiss-Belsuites Admiral Juffair. www.swiss-belhotel.com

THE ST. REGIS DUBAI, THE PALM
Dubai, UAE
The Palm Jumeirah continues to bear fruit with the opening of The St. Regis Dubai, The Palm, marking the triumphant return to the city for one of Marriott International’s iconic luxury brands. Situated at the top The Palm’s trunk, the hotel weaves local motifs into a timeless, elegant design that pays tribute to the lasting legacy of The St. Regis brand. A white and gold colour theme permeates the interiors, from the grand staircase that wraps around a Arabian palm-inspired chandelier, to the 264 guestrooms and 26 suites, which offer fabulous views of the Dubai skyline, Palm Jumeirah and the Arabian Gulf. St. Regis traditions, including the daily sabering of a Champagne bottle at sunset, continue at this new address, and all guests can enjoy the legendary St. Regis Butler Service. Local flavours make their presence felt, from the signature Glitzy Mary cocktail at St. Regis Bar – a local take on the New York classic infused with date syrup, bezaar spice blend, sun-dried lime and saffron – to the intimate surroundings of Her by Caroline Astor, a ladies-only venue serving Afternoon Tea. It wouldn’t be Dubai without an ostentatious display of wealth, so The St. Regis Spa has developed a Signature Gold Journey, which uses 24-carat gold to nourish and strengthen the skin. www.stregisdubaithepalm.com
FAIRMONT TAGHAZOUT BAY
Taghazout, Morocco
Hemmed in by the Atlantic and Atlas Mountains, Northern Morocco is a dramatic landscape where ancient Berber villages exist alongside modern urban centres like Agadir. Here, Fairmont Taghazout Bay will shine a light on both worlds, with immersive experiences offering a flavour of the ancient Kingdom and a taste of modern-day Morocco. Set in 18 hectares of olive groves, the hotel is home to 127 ocean-view rooms, 15 suites and four signature villas, as well as 52 private residences, all positioned to make the most of the region’s famous sunsets. Nearby Taghazout Bay is one of the best surf spots in Morocco, with breaks that can be conquered with the assistance of instructors from the hotel’s surf club, and the 27-hole Kyle Phillipsdesigned Tazegzout Golf Course is just five minutes away. With the help of a local women’s cooperative, guests will be able to learn about regional products like argan oil and Amlou (a traditional Moroccan spread) or explore the nearby ‘Honey Route’ and learn to make the golden nectar with beekeepers, while the resort’s collection of dining options will include the first Moroccan outpost from Japanese ‘Iron Chef’ Masaharu Morimoto. www.fairmonttaghazoutbay.com

KUDA VILLINGILI RESORT MALDIVES
North Male Atoll, Maldives
Situated in the North Male Atoll near one of the Maldives’ finest surf spots, Kuda Villingili Resort Maldives is a tropical hideaway where water is your constant companion – from the lapping waves of the Indian Ocean and the vast expanse of the resort’s 150-metre swimming pool to the striking Beach and Water Villas. Imagined by Maldivian architectural firm GX Associates, and Singapore-based interior design firm URBNarc, the resort is home to 95 villas, all decked out in natural materials and sustainable furnishings, including carpets made from recycled plastic bottles. Most coveted are the Water Villas with Pool, which feature bright, understated interiors, huge outdoor dining decks and private pools perched on the edge of the lagoon. The dreamy spa, spread out across eight treatment villas, uses only organic and plant-based products, and active visitors can work out in the Technogym-equipped fitness centre while enjoying mesmerising ocean views. In addition to an all-day dining beachfront restaurant and poolside Beach Club, The Hawkers is a street market-style restaurant offering Indian-Arabic, Thai-Japanese and Italian-Mediterranean street food. www.kudavillingili.com
ANDAZ BALI
Bali, Indonesia More than 40 years after Hyatt opened its first Indonesian hotel in Sanur, on the southeast coast of Bali, the brand returns to unveil Andaz Bali, a charming resort inspired by the small villages that pepper the Balinese countryside. Built using the traditional red bricks used in Sanur, the hotel is nestled amongst banyan trees and emeraldcoloured plants, with 149 guestrooms including 18 Garden Villas and four Beach villas set out around a series of courtyards. Designed by Bangkok’s Tierra Design and Tokyo-based Spin Design Studio, the interiors reflect a modern take on traditional Balinese design, with locally sourced building materials, such as bamboo, teakwood and andesite, and private balconies looking out towards the lush gardens or the Indian Ocean. Myriad dining options are spread out in distinct settings that befit different moods: the Village Square nods to the shophouses of Chinatown in the Balinese capital Denpasar and is home to four restaurants, while the Fisherman’s Club serves up fresh seafood near the resort’s main infinity pool deck, accompanied by dreamy ocean views. Slip away through an aromatic herb and flower garden and you’ll find yourself at Shankha Spa at Hyatt Regency Bali next door, where Balinese healing traditions are expertly employed to sooth away your cares. www.hyatt.com
