SHARJAH SET TO RECEIVE A LUX* UPGRADE HEAD NORTH FROM DUBAI INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT and the road leads to Sharjah, the understated sibling of better-known Dubai and Abu Dhabi and arguably the best-kept secret in the UAE. Here, Singapore -based hotel company The Lux Collective is bringing its unique blend of experience driven hospitality to the region with two striking resorts that tap into Sharjah’s incredible natural scenery.

LUX* Al Bridi Resort is set within 1,690 hectares of protected nature reserve, home to 50,000 wild animals and managed by the Sharjah Environment and Protected Areas Authority. The 35 luxurious private retreats break away from the bold colours and contemporary design of many LUX* properties (currently in the Indian Ocean and China), instead offering more understated interiors in a neutral palette that reflect the colours of the Al Bridi Nature Reserve. The resort will be home to a LUX* Me Spa and variety of dining options, as well as a discovery centre where guests can join in with conservation focused activities, while the nearby Al Dhaid Farm will offer interactive educational activities for kids.

Over on the east coast of the UAE, LUX* Al Jabal Resort sits on a 18.7-hectare hillside plot overlooking the Gulf of Oman and the crescentshaped Khorfakkan Bay, a popular spot for water sports and dolphin sightings. Here, visitors will

The latest new addition to Ras Al Khaimah’s luxury portfolio pipeline is Sofitel Al Hamra Beach Resort, a contemporary resort with 300 rooms, suites and villas overlooking the waters of the Arabian Gulf, marking the brand’s debut in the Northern Emirates. Due to open in 2023, the property

THE RED SEA PROJECT UNVEILS FIRST LUXURY HOTEL PARTNERS IN THE REMOTE AND UNTOUCHED NORTHWEST corner of Saudi Arabia, one of the kingdom’s most ambitious tourism development undertakings is taking shape. When complete, The Red Sea Project will feature 200 kilometres of beachfront spanning 90 untouched islands surrounded by coral reef and mangrove forests: an earthly paradise that will transform the hospitality landscape in the kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

Built according to stringent sustainability standards, the first wave of openings will include nine luxury hotels with 1,700 guestrooms. The hotel partners include a trio of Accor brands – Raffles, Fairmont and SLS – which will be accompanied by a St. Regis and an EDITION property from

the Marriott brand portfolio, an InterContinental and a Six Senses resort from IHG, a Jumeirah resort and a Grand Hyatt.

All but one of the resorts has been designed under the watchful eye of Foster + Partners, while the St. Regis, a 90-villa resort on the idyllic Ummahat Island, is the vision of Kengo Kuma & Associates.

The 76-key Six Senses Southern Dunes is currently under development on the mainland, surrounded by mountains and wadis, with a striking design inspired by ancient Nabatean culture. SLS Red Sea will deliver 150 rooms, suites and one- to fourbedroom villas to Shaura Island, conceived, like the other resorts on the island, as a ‘Coral Bloom’

With 430 rooms and suites, Grand Hyatt The Red Sea will be the largest of the nine debut hotels, with a striking design that takes the coral bloom concept to the next level; while Raffles Red Sea will be the first Raffles property in Saudi Arabia, with elegant interiors by Citterio & Viel, six dining venues and a beach club.

By the time Phase One is complete at the end 2023, the first five islands will be home to 16 hotels offering a total of 3,000 guestroom, as well as a luxury marina, a Championship golf course, and leisure and entertainment offerings.

But this is just the beginning.

By 2030, The Red Sea Project

expects to welcome one million visitors per year and contribute US $5.3 billion to the Saudi Arabian economy, in line with the Kingdom’s ambitious Vision 2030 goals. Fifty hotels will offer a total of 8,000 rooms, complementing 1,000 residential properties covering 22 islands and six sites on the mainland.

When complete, the project’s international airport will make the destination accessible in less than eight hours for 80 per cent of the world’s population. A vast nursery is nurturing 15 million trees and plants that will breathe life into the desert landscape, home to dunes, mountains, canyons and ancient cultural and heritage sites. www.theredsea.sa

Salamanca is one of the most affluent neighbourhoods in Madrid, and behind closed doors, a team of creatives have transformed the vintage interiors of Hotel Villa Magna into the first Spanish outpost from Rosewood Hotels & Resorts, breathing new life into a local landmark. Spanish architect Ramón de Arana reimagined the grand lobby and façade of Rosewood Villa Magna Madrid, adding a touch of drama and grandeur, while Madrid-based landscape designer Gregorio Marañón replanted the expansive grounds with plant and tree species found in Anglada Palace, which originally occupied the site in the 19th century. Australian design firm BAR Studio paid homage to the palace and Villa Magna’s more recent incarnation when reimagining the interiors: contemporary spaces infused with references to Spanish architecture, art and culture. Among the 154 guest rooms, the signature suites make a convincing case for being the best in the city: Anglada House provides the largest living space, with two bedrooms, terrace, gym and sauna; while Salamanca House is perfect for entertaining with its 140sqm outdoor terrace, the largest in the city. Dining by chef Jesús Sánchez, whose Cantabria restaurant Cenador de Amós has three Michelin stars, is set to make Rosewood Villa Magna Madrid a vital stop on any tour of the city. www.rosewoodhotels.com

The worlds of Italian fashion and French savoir faire collide at Bvlgari Hotel Paris, a new icon on the starstudded Golden Triangle. In a bold move away from the Haussmann-era architectural style of its neighbours on Avenue George V, the hotel cuts a contemporary figure, with a modern façade that’s as daring as the company’s iconic jewellery. Created like all Bvlgari hotels by Italian architecture studio Antonio Citterio Patricia Viel, the interiors are exceptional and refined. Three quarters of the 76 guest rooms are spacious residential-feel suites with private terraces, dressed in warm dark woods with creamy Champagne and dark bronze furnishings, and deep claret accents completing the look.
