KEMPINSKI HEADS FOR THE RED SEA NESTLED BETWEEN THE WARM WATERS OF THE RED SEA and the sublime peaks of the Al Nakhil Range in western Saudi Arabia, the port city of Yanbu is a gateway to outdoor and underwater adventure. Following an extensive renovation that will see the addition of 23 spacious suites and a complete interior refurbishment, one of the city’s best-located beachfront escapes will reopen later this year as Kempinski Hotel & Resort Yanbu. As well as the 23 new-build suites, the resort will be home to 12 villas and 48 designer apartments, as well as five restaurants that will showcase Ke m p i n s k i’s l e g e n d a r y European culinary heritage, and a 3,000-square-metre Ladies’ Spa with a private beach, hammam, steam baths and treatment rooms. The marina and dive school will be the launchpad for excursions into the Red Sea and the nearby Sharm Yanbu Bay, which teems with colourful underwater life including hammerhead sharks, schools of barracuda and enchanting coral grottos; while the fitness centre

ENJOY HIGH-SPEED THRILLS IN RAK RAS AL KHAIMAH HAS SPENT THE LAST FEW YEARS FORGING A REPUTATION as the go-to Middle East destination for adventure travel, with an ever-increasing number of options for active visitors dotted across the mountains, beaches and deserts of the emirate. The latest addition to the adventure arsenal is Jais Sledder, a high-speed toboggan that races down the side of the UAE’s tallest mountain, twisting and turning around tight hairpins and steep descents. Covering a total of 1,885 metres, the ride takes around eight minutes from top to bottom and visitors have the choice of riding solo or with a friend. If you can bear to look up, the route will reveal some of the most spectacular mountain scenery in the UAE as the toboggan descends Jebel Jais at up to 40 kilometres per hour. The ride is the first of 20 new tourism projects throughout Ras Al Khaimah, part of a US $130 million investment that will see the development of desert campsites, hiking trails and a scallop-diving ranch. Jebel Jais is also home to Jais Flight, the world’s longest zipline, Jais Sky Tour and the Bear Grylls Explorers’ Camp, as well as 1484 by Puro, the highest restaurant in the UAE. www.visitjebeljais.com

and infinity pool provide a space to warm up and cool off after a day exploring Mount Radwa, home to wild ibex, wolves and the elusive lynx. The unveiling of Kempinski Hotel & Resort Yanbu followed that of another Saudi Arabia signing: Kempinski Al Qeshan Hotel, which will take shape on King Fahad Road in Riyadh over the next four years. With 150 rooms and a collection of Kempinski managed luxury apartments, the 35-storey hotel will be built according to high technical and structural sustainability standards and boast one floor dedicated to a ladies’ spa and one floor for a men’s spa, as well as two restaurants and a rooftop lounge and swimming pool. Kempinski is currently undertaking the development of four new properties in Saudi Arabia, with new hotels in Makkah and Al Madinah due to open in 2023 and 2024 respectively, joining these two new signings and Kempinski Hotel Al Othman Al Khobar, which opened in 2016. www.kempinski.com

SIX SENSES TOUCHES DOWN IN DUBAI

EVER SINCE SIX SENSES MADE ITS MIDDLE EAST DEBUT WITH ZIGHY BAY in Oman’s Musandam Peninsula in 2008, a Dubai outpost of the sustainability focused brand has always seemed inevitable. The wait is finally over as the company reveals plans for Six Senses The Palm, Dubai, a beachfront escape on the quiet West Crescent of Palm Jumeirah inspired by Emirati culture and the unique geography and geology of the UAE.

At the heart of the resort, Six Senses Place is a 5,600-squaremetre social and wellness hub with a longevity clinic, IV lounge, biohacking room, hydrotherapy circuit pool, working spaces and the Six Senses Spa, where guests will be able to sign up to programmes designed to promote recovery and reconnection. Centred around a desert garden with meandering paths and intimate courtyards, the 61 guestrooms and 162 branded residences will incorporate

biophilic design to encourage natural circadian rhythms. Residences are de rigeur for new luxury resorts, especially in the UAE, where there’s no shortage of UHNWIs looking for investment opportunities. Nine five-bedroom Signature Villas Ω each of which comes with an infinity pool and a private garden studded with ponds and wadi boulders Ω are the crème de la crème among the 162 branded residences, which also includes Penthouses, Royal

Penthouses and duplex Sky Villas. Industry reports tell us that investors are increasingly prepared to pay a premium for sustainable developments, which is good news for Select Group, the property development company behind the LEED-certified Six Senses The Palm, Dubai: prices for the Signature Villas are listed on the Select Group website as starting from AED 79 million (US $21.5 million). The resort is scheduled to open in 2024. www.sixsenses.com

GCC ROOM BOOM GRABS ATTENTION AT ATM REGULAR VISITORS TO MIDDLE EAST often note that new hotels seem to pop up almost every week. New research commissioned by Arabian Travel Market (ATM) and carried out by market intelligence company STR shows that this isn’t far from the truth: hotel development in several destinations across the GCC is growing at six times the global average. Among the fastest growing destinations, Makkah, Doha, Riyadh, Medina, Muscat and Dubai stand out as the leaders of the pack. Makkah and Doha are both expanding their room inventory by an enormous 76 per cent, while Riyadh, Medina and Muscat are expanding at 66 per cent, 60 per cent and 59 per cent respectively. Despite years of rapid expansion, Dubai’s growth doesn’t seem to be slowing down, with Expo 2020 proving a catalyst for further growth. The number of rooms available in the emirate is currently set to grow by 26 per cent – more than double the global average – with 50,000 new rooms in the pipeline. Doha has also been on a new hotel building spree in the lead up to FIFA World Cup 2022, with 23,000 new hotel rooms due to open in

2022; while Saudi Arabia accounts for 3.2 per cent of the new hotel rooms worldwide, a reflection of its ambitious plans around Saudi Vision 2030. “With the global average sitting at 12 per cent, we are witnessing multiple GCC destinations growing at six times those rates,” says Danielle Curtis, exhibition director ME, ATM “These figures coupled with the ongoing relaxation in travel restrictions, will undoubtedly encourage travel professionals throughout the Middle East and further afield. As such we are expecting a substantial increase in the number of participants at our live event this year, especially Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Oman and the UAE.” ATM takes place at the Dubai World Trade Centre from May 9-12, starting on a Monday for the first time in the event’s 29-year history. ATM 2022 will feature several events within-an-event, including the ARIVAL Dubai @ ATM forum – which covers current and future trends for tour operators and attractions, focusing on driving growth through marketing, technology, distribution, thought leadership and executive-level connections – and ATM Travel Tech, previously Travel Forward. www.wtm.com/atm

SHANGRI-LA JEDDAH

Jeddah, Saudi Arabia

Soaring above the Red Sea coast, Burj Jassila is a new architectural beacon on the Jeddah skyline: a 64-storey tower that claims the title as the tallest building in the city. Home to 116 luxurious Burj Assila Residences and the brand-new Shangri-La Jeddah, the project is set to become a hub for fine dining and wellness among locals and visitors alike. Guests have the choice of 148 guestrooms, 55 suites and 17 serviced apartments for longer stays, all finished in a bright colour palette with blue and beige accents reflecting the desert, sea and city views from the floor-to-ceiling windows. Shangri-La brings its Asian culinary heritage with it in the form of Shang Palace, the brand’s signature modern Chinese restaurant. Inspired by traditional courtyard siheyuan houses, the restaurant is imbued with traditional Chinese motifs and Arabesque patterns, while all-day dining outlet The Waterfront Kitchen sports a bright white and blue interior that pays homage to ocean travel. A 25-metre outdoor pool on the seventh floor provides front row views of the Red Sea, while The Spa at Shangri-La is the serene heart of the hotel: a peaceful haven featuring a menu of treatments by award-winning Natura Bissé. www.shangri-la.com

THE MADRID EDITION

Madrid, Spain

A pair of signature restaurants helmed by two of Latin America’s most influential chefs is an indication of grand culinary aspirations at The Madrid EDITION, a brand-new design-driven urban escape in the heart of the Spanish capital from Ian Schrager. Situated in the Plaza de la Descalzas in a contemporary building designed by British architect and long-term Schrager collaborator John Pawson, the hotel forms a new dining and social hub in the energetic Sol neighbourhood. At signature restaurant Jerónimo, named after Spanish painter and engraver Jerónimo Antonio Gil, Mexican master chef Enrique Olvera explores the boundaries between traditional Mexican and Spanish cuisines, while Peruvian maestro Diego Munoz, former executive chef at the outstanding Astrid Y Gaston in Lima, oversees the action at Oroya, where the kaleidoscopic flavours of Peru are brought into the spotlight. Next to Oroya, the largest rooftop swimming pool in Madrid is surrounded by sleek cabanas and loungers where guests can sip on creative cocktails from the adjacent teak bar. Paris-based designer François Champsaur has laid out the interiors of the 200 guestrooms and suites, which include two of the largest penthouses in the capital. Crowning the collection, the Madrid Penthouse is a sprawling hideaway with a panoramic, greenery-filled terrace and private infinity pool, an eight-seat dining room and an elegant wood and leather daybed by Bassam Fellows. Bringing the entire EDITION offering together is the lively Lobby Bar, a social hub where custom made furnishings surround a spectacular scalloped copper bar and towering backlit bottle display. www.marriott.com

orfu may be better known, Paxos may appeal more currently to the in-crowd but Kefalonia is very evidently less spoilt and has more peace, charm and authenticity. From the airport, to reach the north of the island, rather than the quicker but barren, mountainous route I took the corniche, a scenic coastal road, to immerse instantly into the local vibe with the sea to one side and tavernas to the other. As I gathered height, I looked down upon the fish farms with their nets of sea bass in front of Argostoli the capital town with her terracotta roofs which have aged so well in their uniformity. Later on, at a vertiginous drop, I couldn’t help pulling over to get a glimpse

of the glorious beach at Myrtos. How wonderful to surrender en route to the goats of different colours and faces that live on this road, tinkling their bells as they experience the day’s cool and shade before the night’s heat from the tarmac. I reached my destination, a northern fishing village called Fiscardo (for a complete guide go to www.fiscardo.com). It faces Ithaca, the home of Odysseus, and is a yachties’ paradise. If some perhaps in the bigger boats come to see and be seen then there are no nightclubs here. It’s a place for relaxation and repose, for the reflection and appreciation of the unspoilt harmony of land and sea. They moor in the evening to disembark from a dinghy or rowing boat onto terra firma and come and dine at one of

the many restaurants on the quay or to flick the hangers of the many tasteful boutiques offering beach wear and dresses or else buy gorgeous pots of flower and thyme honey beside the shapely bottles of local olive oil. A five-minute drive or twenty-minute walk from Fiscardo and perched high up overlooking the sea is the imposing, impressive façade of where I had the pleasure of staying for a week: namely the Almyra Hotel (www.almyrafiskardo.gr). It’s run with grace, charm and efficiency by the classy and educated owner Elina. Affectionate and tactile she puts a reassuring arm around their new guests who are treated as an extension to her family.
