IS AIR COMING THROUGH THE INLETS? One of the most important and challenging tasks in any livestock building is controlling the airflow and this happens only when we have adequate static pressure (SP). The easiest way to be sure you have adequate SP is to turn on the minimum fans at the setting you will be using and find out if the walk-in door will pull itself shut. If it does not, you have too many leaks. These leaks come from shutters that donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t seal well, holes in curtains, bad curtain pockets that are broken, shutter blades on pit fans or wall fans that are missing or broken, and inlets with damaged or missing louver blades. If barn does not have static pressure, the minimum ventilation system will not mix the air properly. This can cause poor health and poor performance of the pig as well as increased heating costs.

If the air does not come through the ceiling inlets, the air will be colder since attic air is typically warmer than outside air. On a windy day, the barn can have a change in static pressure caused by the air entering through barn leaks. The management of the building is even more critical when air enters the attic from the barn itself. The colder air entering the barn through air leaks drops to the floor, resulting in chilling of pigs and the floor becoming wet. A chilled pig and a damp environment can cause respiratory problems. When it comes to operating any air inlet system during the cooler months of the year it is important to keep in mind that the objective is to maximize the amount of fresh air brought in without causing excessive decreases in air temperature or excessive increases in fuel usage. The more air that can be brought in without decreasing barn temperature, the fresher the air will be and the better your animals will perform. The extreme cold weather that most of the livestock producing areas experience during the winter months are well aware of the freeze-up of shutters and inlets. If you look at a standard shutter from an angle, you can see daylight between the louvers and the frame of the shutter.

DOUBLE L’S NEW ECOTIGHT SHUTTER MINIMIZES AIR LEAKAGE Double L has designed a new patent pending EcoTight Shutter to help overcome this problem. DOUBLE L’S 2-WAY INLETS MINIMIZE COLD WEATHER PERFORMANCE ISSUES The type of inlet you are using is also very important in your efforts to save money. Many of the current gravity inlets used today have proven to be susceptible to freezing. The cold air coming in from the attic mixes with the warm moist air in the room and the blades freeze or drip. Double L offers a number of 2-way insulated inlets that minimize these cold weather problems and seal well to minimize drafts. They are available counterweighted or actuated. The most popular is the JD2600 2-Way Insulated Inlet. Iowa State University has articles stating that one of the most important things in your building is Static Pressure. If the static pressure is correct, the inlets will be able to mix the air, correcting the stratification in the building. These things reduce the cost of heating your barn. Another university article states that “by gently moving hot dry air off the ceiling down toward the floor - floor temperatures can be increased, floor moisture decreased, and fuel usage reduced between 10% - 30%”. If the floors are dry and warm - the pigs will gain weight faster, stay healthier, and use feed more efficiently.

ARE YOU PULLING 800 FPM THROUGH AIR INLETS? You need to make sure that the sum of all holes into your swine room is small enough that air from the inlets enters at 800 fpm. This is the total of all air leaks into the room, including pit lids not sitting tight on the pump port, curtain pockets, mice holes in curtains, missing door sweeps, missing door knobs on old doors, shutters on idle fans, and the designed ceiling inlets not having the correct velocity. With the correct inlet velocity (800 fpm) with a 7.5-8 ft. ceiling, most growers should ‘feel’ the inlet draft in their face at about 12-15 ft back from the inlet. Anything less than this and there are too many ‘inlet’ holes into the room. When you get inlet velocity correct, you have great air mixing throughout the room and pens generally become drier and complaints about air quality are minimal. Shutters on unused fans are a major leak into rooms at minimum ventilation. They can leak about 300 cfm at normal operating conditions with leakage much worse when wind impacts the shutters.

HEAT LOSS IN BABY PIGS IS VERY COSTLY The first 24 hours after birth is the most critical time in a baby pig’s life. Pigs born at the 102 degree warmth of the sow that come into a farrowing room of 70 degrees or less are very susceptible to heat loss. Chilled young pigs have reduced resistance to disease, are drowsy, and often fail to suckle properly. As a result, they run a higher risk of being laid on by the sow and/or never really get that good nursing start. Baby pigs have no fat to keep them warm. The only heat gain a pig has is through its intake. Heat loss, however, comes from a combination of cold structure surfaces, air temperature, drafts, and the flooring material the pig is constantly in contact with. The greater the heat loss, the more feed it will take to offset that loss and produce gains. The thermal comfort flooring from Double L is very energy efficient. Before you purchase any

flooring, lay your hand on it. If it feels warm to you, it will feel warm to your pigs. Flooring that feels cold to the touch will zap body heat from the animals. A cast iron and polypropylene combination is a nearly perfect flooring system for both the sow and the little pigs and is recommended by many producers. The cast iron is cool for the sow and uncomfortable for the little pigs so they are inclined to stay off of it and are less likely to get crushed. Producers reported they save at least one pig per litter from a crushing death, making the combination system very cost effective. The temperature in the room can actually be turned down 5 degrees and still maintain a comfortable environment for the pigs.

PIG MAT SAVES 36% OF PIG’S HEAT LOSS Tests conducted by Double L show that producers using the 4’ x 6’ Wean-to-Finish Pig Welcome Mat can use 36% less energy to maintain the pig’s body temperature (105º F) versus a pig lying on a concrete floor. Two boxes, 12” x 12” x 12” high, were made using 1 1/2” thick insulation board, leaving the top and bottom of the box open. Lined with 3 mil plastic and filled with water, two identical heating probes were used to heat the water to 105º F. One box was placed on a concrete floor and the other box was placed on the 4’ x 6’ Welcome Mat on a concrete floor. When the temperature of the water reached 105º F, the usage of kilowatts to maintain that temperature in two boxes was documented during the winter months.

CONCRETE FLOOR VS. WARM, DRY PIG MAT

In a 17-hour span, the box on the plastic mat used 1.15 KwH while the box directly on the concrete used 1.8 KwH. DOUBLE L INLETS GREAT FOR RETROFIT As production costs continue to rise, we need to do all we can to help minimize these expenses. University articles have listed air mixing as one of the most important ways to reduce heating costs. One of the easiest ways to do this is to have the right size fan and inlets as well as inlets that do not leak air back into the attic.

INSTALLING JD2900 INLET The C2000 (QUAD) has been replaced with the Double L JD2900 Inlet to eliminate inlet freeze-up which allows moist in-house air to enter the attic during cold weather. Attic inspectors have shown that this moist air can harm the metal truss plates, the ceiling insulation, and structural integrity of the building.

The replacement JD2900 Inlet improves barn air mixing as well as minimizes the air leakage back into the attic. The inlet lids are insulated to minimize condensation, dripping, and freeze-up during very cold weather. And the good news is that the JD2900 has the same size rough opening as the C2000 (QUAD). Replacement is as easy as taking out the old screws and putting in new screws. Another advantage of the JD2900 is an increase in air capacity from the original C2000 (QUAD) rating of 1,883 cfm to 2,490 cfm with the JD2900. This is an increase in airflow of 33%. The JD2900 also gives a more precise control of airflow and can be adjusted to open at different static pressures.

The Raydot Inlets are no longer available and are replaced by the Double L RD1200 and RD2400 Inlets. They are constructed of a rotomolded single piece housing, which is fully insulated and corrosion resistant. They feature a 1â&#x20AC;? totally covered insulated lid with a seal around the RD2400 perimeter to minimize condensation, dripping, and inlet freeze-up. Frictionless styrofoam PVC covered lids on a continuous flexible hinge swing down to allow clean attic air into the main room. When the lids are closed, the inlet is fully sealed against air leakage and light. They withstand harsh environments and extreme cold weather conditions. Shutoffs are included. Insulation stops are not required. Remember, by using these inlets to replace Raydot Inlets, there is no reframing needed. These replacement inlets will fit into the existing rough openings. Less labor and lower cost is hard to beat with these quality replacement inlets. Problems occurred with the BIL Inlets which have been replaced with the Double L TJW Wall Inlets. The BIL Inlets leaked air around the blade into the room. The linkage system was hard to adjust compared to the TJWs. The TJWs are counterweighted on each BIL INLETS translucent blade, allowing air to be brought in along the ceiling and mix the warmer air at that height with the cooler air near the floor. This helps with LP gas costs and helps reduce pig scours by preventing the pigs from getting chilled. The TJW louvers are easier to keep clean and donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t break like the BIL blades. Airflow capacity can also be increased with the TJW inlets. Improved sow comfort increases feed intake allowing the sow to produce more milk, wean heavier pigs, and improve breed-back.
