FRESH AIR, HEAT, & AIR MOVEMENT ARE KEY TO LITTER MOISTURE CONTROL AIR INLETS ARE THE MOST IMPORTANT KEY TO CONTROLLING LITTER MOISTURE

What does it take to control litter moisture during cold weather? Quite simply it requires three things: fresh air, heat, and air movement. Fresh air is required to transport excess moisture from inside the house to outside the house. Heat is needed to increase the temperature as well as the moisture holding capacity of the cool incoming air, and air movement helps to extract the moisture from the litter so it can be exhausted from the house. Any successful moisture control program must comprise all three components. For instance, if you bring in cold air, circulate it over the litter but do not add heat, little if any moisture will be removed from the litter. Likewise, it is difficult to dry litter if you bring in fresh air and heat but do not move it over the litter. And, of course, if you heat and circulate air but do not provide an exchange of air, you cannot keep a house dry. A loose house allows most cool, fresh air to enter through cracks in side wall and not through the sidewall inlets. A moisture control system in a poultry house consists of fans to exchange the air, supplemental heat, and most importantly - inlets to condition, warm, and dry the cool incoming air as well as to promote the movement of air over the litter.

But how effective this system is in removing moisture from the litter depends to a large extent on house tightness. This is because it is only the air that enters through a house’s inlets that will be properly conditioned before moving down to and over the litter. Cold, damp air entering through cracks in the side walls, fan shutters, tunnel doors/curtains, etc. will tend to drop quickly to the floor, chilling the birds and removing little moisture from the litter.

INLETS CREATE A BENEFICIAL AIR CIRCULATION PATTERN

Once a house is made tight, special attention needs to be paid to the inlet system. Is it set to achieve maximum heating of the incoming air before it moves down to floor level? The ideal is for the air entering through sidewall

INDUSTRY NEWS

inlets to travel along the ceiling until it just makes it to the center of the house at which point it gently moves down toward the floor. It is essential to maximize the travel distance along the ceiling so the cool incoming air will be sufficiently heated by the warm air collecting at the ceiling, which is produced by the house’s heating system and by the birds.

Proper Inlet System directs air along the ceiling to center of house before it drops to the floor level.

As the air moves along the ceiling, the temperature of the air increases and the relative humidity of the air decreases, making it easier to dry the litter without chilling the birds. In addition, the inlets create a beneficial air circulation pattern. The air coming from the inlets moves up toward the peak of the ceiling, then down toward the floor and finally back to the side wall, pulling moisture out of the litter as it goes. The exact inlet opening and pressure required to properly condition the cool, damp incoming air varies from house to house but in general a static pressure between 0.07 inches and 0.12 inches, as well as an inlet opening around two inches tends to work best. The optimal inlet opening and pressure required depends on a wide variety of factors including type of inlet, inlet location, house width, ceiling smoothness, and outside versus inside temperature difference. As with most things, it takes a little experimenting to determine what combination of inlet opening and pressure will provide the optimal inlet air flow pattern.

POULTRY HOUSES MUST BE TIGHT FOR ENERGY EFFICIENCY THE CHALLENGE:

The more control producers have over air temperature, air quality, and energy usage, the more control they will have over their paycheck at the end of the grow-out. In order to control air temperature, air quality, and energy usage, it is crucial to control how much fresh air enters the house as well as how it enters the house. This means the house must be tight, because in a loose house, it is very difficult to control anything. THE SOLUTION:

The following steps will help increase house tightness. 1. Cover fans with plastic 2. Seal sill plate – manage your darkling beetle population 3. Make sure tunnel doors seal tightly 4. Make sure end wall doors seal tightly 5. Make sure sidewall and ceiling inlets seal tightly 6. Make sure you install a proper vapor barrier 7. Seal the top of the sidewall ridge in open ceiling houses Smoke testing will help find air leaks in places where air leaks were never thought possible. Cold air entering through cracks, doors, inlets, or shutters that don’t shut properly hurts static pressure and spoils the airflow pattern needed for cold weather ventilation. Even new houses can benefit from smoke tests since air leaks have often been found in newly built houses. THE RESULT:

After carefully following these steps, you should be able to pull at least a 0.10 or 0.12 static pressure (SP) with one 48-inch fan or two 36-inch fans running with all inlets and doors closed. A really tight house could pull 0.15 to 0.25 SP. That means the following results can be obtained: • Fuel savings of 20% to 25% • A more consistent temperature maintained throughout the house

• Saved money by reducing the number of fans required to achieve desired static pressure Loose houses can significantly increase their profit by improving house tightness, resulting in fuel savings in the winter and cooler houses during the summer.

CIRCULATION FAN SYSTEM MAXIMIZES LITTER MOISTURE REMOVAL A circulation fan system is used not only to break up stratification and create more conditions from one end of a house to the other but just as importantly is used to increase the level of air movement over the litter to aid in moisture removal. A proper circulation fan system gently moves air across the litter, generally producing air speeds in the neighborhood of 50 ft/min so as not to cause harmful drafts on the birds. Ideally, circulation fans should operate continually to maximize moisture removal but may need to be temporarily turned off when the timer fans operate if they interfere with the air circulation pattern created by the air inlets. One of the biggest concerns when it comes to controlling litter moisture is how to do so while keeping heating costs to a minimum. Though it will always take some amount of heat to control litter moisture during cold weather, how much depends to a large extent on the performance of a house inlet system. If a house is tight, air exchange rates will be more closely controlled and air entering through the inlets will be maximized, which in turn will lead to better conditioning of the incoming air as well as better utilization of both supplemental heat and that produced by the birds. Though at times controlling litter moisture may seem like an impossible task, with proper management of incoming air and house relative humidity, it can be done. Proper litter management will result in better environment for the birds and ultimately better health and performance.

VENTILATION CHECKLIST

Test Your Minimum Ventilation with a Static Pressure Test Close all curtains and inlets. Turn on your minimum fans. If you are not pulling a .08 static pressure, you should look for leaks. Below are some ideas of where to start. DOOR TEST To determine if room has static pressure, turn on your 36” fan and open the door an inch.

Inlet Performance Under Static Pressure Should be pulling 800 ft. / min. for proper air mixing

Static pressure should pull the door shut.

* Infrared images provided by the University of Georgia

END WALL DOOR AIR LEAKAGE* Replace old or poorly sealed end wall doors.

DIRTY SHUTTER BLADES Can reduce fan performance by 40% or more!

.01 static pressure pulls minimal ft. / min. bad air mixing

.10 static pressure pulls over 800 ft. / min. for proper air mixing

LOOSE SILL PLATE* Cold air able to penetrate through holes.

LOOSE TUNNEL DOORS* Tighten tunnel doors or adjust cable management to reduce air leakage.

CABLE MANAGEMENT Ensures all inlets open and shut evenly at the same time.

36” SHUTTER LEAKAGE

SHUTTER FLIPOVER Same as leaving one inlet open at all times.

LOOSE FAN BELTS Worn or loose belts reduce the speed at which the fan rotates.

¼” air leakage is equivalent

to 200 cfm!

CURTAINS NOT SEALED TIGHT If not sealed tightly, will gather dirt and dust build-up.

STOP Air Leaks

DOOR NOT SEALED TIGHT A ¼” crack around entry door is a crack 144” x ¼” or a hole 6” x 6”!

RECESSED VS. FLUSH MOUNT INLETS

10

WHY RECESSED VS. FLUSH MOUNT? Some sidewall inlets are better at directing air across the ceiling than others

Instead of shooting the air to the center of the building, air hits the ceiling and bounces down to the floor chilling the birds

Flush Mount (Surface Mount)

Recessed Wall Inlets

Competition Inlet

DirectAire Inlets

A high quality inlet makes more sense since majority of our fresh air should enter through the inlets The inlet door is recessed into the wall, which prevents air from exiting the sides of the inlet

Effectively pulls warm air from sidewalls 3 feet away and mixes warm air with fresh incoming air, directing mixed tempered air along ceiling to peak of house

Can be used to increase air movement across floor

Tend to be better insulated and constructed than traditional galvanized inlets

DirectAire Recessed Inlet Pallets

Leakage at the bottom of the inlet

Sweating / inlet hinge rusting

Side air leaks let cold air drop without mixing with the warm air in the house

These weaknesses can prove costly, especially in modern totally enclosed houses

RECESSED DIRECTAIRE INLET

Conventional Inlets have a flat design that disperses air out the sides along the sidewall. Instead of shooting air to the center of building, the inlet causes air to hit the ceiling and bounce down to the floor.

FLUSH MOUNT GALVANIZED DOOR

We know that in the real world fans get dirty. Very dirty. That’s why we designed our fans to have a much higher maximum amp rating than the operating amp rating. This allows the fan to continue to operate perfectly when dirty instead of burning out the motor.

OTHER FANS DIRECTAIRE FANS

EXCELLENT CCFM PER WATT (CIRCULATING CUBIC FEET PER MIN.) We know how important energy efficiency is to your operation. That’s why our fans offer CCFM/Watt ratings of up to 26.41.

SEALED MOTOR

Life in a confinement building is harsh if you’re a fan motor. That’s why our fan motors are sealed to keep out environmental dust to allow our fans to keep running at their full potential.
