POULTRY TIMES
Tightness #1 Priority in Poultry Houses / Mega-Houses Poultry house tightness cannot be stressed enough. How well a house is insulated is important, but the tightness of a poultry house is actually of greater importance. This is because house tightness affects a producer’s bottom line in many more ways than how well a house is insulated. In fact, tightness has a big influence on house heating costs – much more so than house insulation levels. It is important throughout the year for proper environmental control, but it is critical during the winter months to minimize air leaks and reduce fuel use. It is impossible to have an efficiently run house during the winter months if you cannot control the environment. Cold air entering the house is heavy and drops immediately to the floor before it mixes with the warm air near the ceiling. Chicks easily become chilled from air leaks around footings, loose curtains, and end doors and may never recover. Performance may suffer throughout the flock because of poor environmental conditions.
It is extremely important that the cold incoming air enters through the inlets!
Most houses are fully equipped and are capable of controlling the environment inside the house. But the house itself in many cases does not complement the equipment. In order for the equipment to maintain and control the in-house environment properly, the house must be tight! A producer not only controls how much air is entering the house, but from where it is entering. During cold weather, essentially no air should enter a house when the fans are off. When the fans are operating, as much air as possible should enter through the air inlets so it can be directed along the ceiling toward the center of the house. This ensures it is preconditioned by the warm air next to the ceiling before moving down to bird level. Air entering through cracks or gaps in side wall curtains whether the fans are on or off - can lead to drafts, caked litter, and excessive fuel usage. Essentially every possible place where cold air can enter the house must be repaired.
How do we increase house tightness? University of Georgia has suggested the following . . .
1. Repair or replace damaged curtains and curtain pockets 2. Cover fans with plastic 3. Keep half house curtain tight 4. Seal sill plate – manage your darkling beetle population 5. Make sure tunnel doors seal tightly 6. Make sure end wall doors seal tightly

INDUSTRY NEWS sidewalls of the house. The air should flow as smoothly as possible and attach to the ceiling so it can travel to the desired location of the house. The obstructions built into the house really hurt the ability to mix air properly. Alternate locations for these utilities need to be worked out before construction. In houses with poor inlet management, as much as a 15 to 20 degree difference in floor and ceiling temperature has been observed. Stir fans are necessary to keep mixing and moving the air to prevent air stratification.
7. Make sure sidewall and ceiling inlets seal tightly 8. Make sure you install a proper vapor barrier 9. Seal the top of the sidewall ridge in open ceiling houses Smoke testing your poultry houses will help find air leaks in places where air leaks were never thought possible. Cold air entering through cracks, doors, inlets, or shutters that don’t shut properly hurts static pressure and spoils the airflow pattern needed for cold weather ventilation. Smoke testing during a pressure test is a great way to find unsuspected air leaks. Air can enter a poultry house in places that you would never suspect. Even new houses can benefit from smoke tests since air leaks have often been found in newly built houses.
Proper air inlet management can also help to keep this temperature difference to a minimum. Saved fuel costs keep money in your pocket. Houses with poor air mixing will use 20 to 25% more fuel. Plus the combination of temperature and air quality from day one is probably the most significant factor in broiler flock performance. Extreme temperatures can be devastating, especially during the brooding period. Conditions that are too cold dramatically impact the ability of younger birds to get adequate feed and water, and if early growth is slowed, the performance losses cannot be made up during the life of the flock.
Poultry House Must Be Tight To Achieve Proper Static Pressure
Proper air inlet management is crucial to maintain dry floors and good growing conditions in the broiler house during the winter months. For proper inlet management, it is important to understand all the factors that determine whether ventilation will be effective or not. House tightness, operating static pressure, number of minimum ventilation fans to be used, proper number of air inlets that should be used, and fan run time all play a role in determining what type of growing conditions will be in the poultry house.
The bottom line is that proper management of air inlets to provide birds the required temperature and air quality they need is absolutely essential for getting top returns.
First of all, the tightness of the house must be addressed. The house must be tight enough to use inlets effectively. This would mean that you should be able to pull at least a 0.10 or 0.12 static pressure (SP) with one 48-inch fan or two 36-inch fans running with all inlets and doors closed. A really tight house could pull 0.15 to 0.25 SP. However, if less than a 0.08 SP is achieved with these fans in operation and all inlets closed, house is not sufficiently tight to use negative pressure ventilation.
Keys to Successful Use of Sidewall and Ceiling Inlets
Ideal broiler flock performance is greatly affected by correct ventilation management. Air inlet management is the key to providing the ideal environment during the critical starting and early growth phases. Below are the key points to keep in mind: 1. A poultry house must be tight for inlets to work properly.
Do Not Allow Obstructions To Interfere With Airflow
2. Most poultry houses in the United States rely on negative pressure to flow air into the house during cool weather or brooding operations. The inlet is the tool to make this happen properly.
One problem often seen in the field is obstructions to airflow, such as water or electrical equipment being placed directly in the air stream of the inlet. For both ceiling and sidewall style inlets, you should be trying to achieve high air velocity so you can throw or shoot the air to the center or

entering the house, and thus air mixing. In cold weather, inlets are the tools to help blend cold outside air with warm inside air to save fuel and maintain precise temperatures. Good inlet management prevents all the hot air from being in the top of the house. 4. Curtain openings and board cracks are not good inlets because they are too large, not uniform, and do not do a great job of directing airflow. 5. Static pressure inlet controllers work well to provide great airflow “throw” into the house under changing conditions, but only when the number of inlets available is matched to the number of fans that will come on. All inlets in a house are to be used only for maximum power ventilation mode. During brooding and cold weather, a large number of the inlets are not needed and must be closed off to assure good airflow. 6. Inlets must be open approximately one inch for a ceiling inlet and two to three inches for a sidewall inlet to achieve the proper airflow patterns from the inlet. If the poultry house has all inlet openings 1/4” to 1/2”, you need to latch closed every other inlet and then the remaining inlets will open twice as far.

Test Your Minimum Ventilation with a Static Pressure Test Close all curtains and inlets. Turn on your minimum fans. If you are not pulling a .08 static pressure, you should look for leaks. Below are some ideas of where to start. Door Test
To determine if room has static pressure, turn on your 36” fan and open the door an inch.
Inlet Performance Under Static Pressure
Should be pulling 800 ft. / min. for proper air mixing
Static pressure should pull the door shut.

Three Reasons Why Double L Fans Are the Best in the Industry Extra Amps to Spare
We know that in the real world fans get dirty. Very dirty. That’s why we designed our fans to have a much higher maximum amp rating than the operating amp rating. This allows the fan to continue to operate perfectly when dirty instead of burning out the motor.
Excellent CCFM Per Watt (Circulating Cubic Feet per Minute)
Other Fans
We know how important energy efficiency is to your operation. That’s why our fans offer CCFM/Watt ratings of up to 26.41.
Double L’s Fan
Sealed Motor
Life in a confinement building is harsh if you’re a fan motor. That’s why our fan motors are sealed to keep out environmental dust to allow our fans to keep running at their full potential.
