This photograph taken from the roof of the Halladay Block (at John St.) shows the majority of the Central Block on the north side, with the Grand Central Hotel just beyond Chase St. On the right side of the picture is, first, the vacant lot at the S.E. corner of Kincaid St. and beyond that the stone

building with the brick extension on top, occupied by H. Brown & Sons (floor & feed). Next is the Tompkins Block with the tower where the merchant tailor shop of Moore & Mowat occupied part of the ground floor, and above was located the Masonic Temple.

The Central Block -1878

This hand-coloured engraving shows the new commercial block which has dominated the streetscape of the west end of our main street for more than 130 years. This was originally the location of the early home and store built about 1808 for young Charles Jones on property he purchased from l. The land was redeveloped about 1878 by William H. Comstock and Ezra H. Halladay. Š copyright -

The old store was torn down and the Jones homestead was moved to George St. Years later the city tore down the Jones House when it opened the George St. parking lot a few years ago. The new block of stores with apartments above was built in two sections which can be seen by observing the different cornice heights. October 2009
