Doug Grant Looking east from St. Paul St.

1890s On a day, sometime in the 1890s, a local photographer must have climbed to the roof of the old Brockville Town Hall at King St. W. and St. Paul St. to capture this image. The town hall, some of you know, is the present Brockville Arts Centre. I wish we could find some early photographs of it. It was a tall square building with a four-sided sloping roof, topped by a cupola. Looking easterly from the cupola down the main street like this picture, we can see a lot of old buildings. Many of them are still in place. On the left, the first one is at the nec of Perth St., where the REVOLUTION SKATEBOARD SHOP (#232) is located. The building housing 1000 ISLAND PIZZERIA (#226) had not been built.

The next block stone building does still exists. It is the former Gilmour Wholesale Grocery building, now RELIABLE HOME FURNITURE. It was built about 1870. Next are the two hotels, the Clifton House and the Commercial Hotel, the way they used to look. Many other buildings have not changed much.
