S M A L L F E E T, B I G L A N D Adventure, Home, and Family on the Edge of Alaska
AVAIL ABL E IN O CTO BE R
Explore the changing coast of wild Alaska. . . at toddler speed •
Sequel to 2009’s top-selling A Long Trek Home: 400 Miles by Boot, Raft, and Ski
•
Unique narrative combination of thrilling adventure with the challenges of bringing small children along
•
An accessible window into life on America’s “Last Frontier”
Small Feet, Big Land follows the expeditions and daily life of a family of four: Erin McKittrick and her husband, Hig, lifelong adventure trekkers, set out t o explore the vast and remote wild corners of Alaska with their two young children in tow. After trekking thousands of miles through harsh and beautiful wilderness together, Erin and Hig must adjust to the short attention span — and short legs — of a toddler and the weight of a newborn baby, as they walk Alaska’s rapidly changing coastline. While visiting remote Arctic villages, touring a zinc mine, and exploring for two months on one of Alaska’s largest glaciers, Erin sees the dramatic effects of climate change on the landscape around her, and considers the very different world in which her children may live one day. Whether huddling in the pelting rain, facing a curious grizzly bear, eating whale blubber with new friends, or picking berries on the sunny tundra their unconventional adventures draw Erin’s family — and readers — closer together as they explore the intersection of wilderness and industry in America’s wildest state. Erin McKittrick and her husband, Hig, have walked over 7,000 miles through Alaska’s trackless wilderness. Their journeyfrom Seattle to the Aleutians is chronicled in Erin’s first book, A Long Trek Home: 4,000 Miles by Boot, Raft, and Ski (see page 38). In between expeditions, they are raising their children a stone’s throw from the wilderness in a yurt in Seldovia, Alaska. They are the founders of Ground Truth Trekking, a nonprofit that uses science and adventure to further the conversation about Alaska environment issues: www.groundtruthtrekking.org/blog. 224 pages, 51⁄2 x 71⁄2 , 21 B&W photos, 5 maps, paperbound, $18.95, ISBN 978-1-59485-736-2. Matt Samet Foreword by Kevin Jorgeson
C R A G S U R V I VA L HANDBOOK The Unspoken Rules of Climbing
AVAIL AB L E IN O CTO BE R
Pearls of mentorship wisdom for 21st century climbers •
Climbing etiquette you won’t learn at the gym but need to know
•
Advice from “Rock Maestros” Justen Sjong, Kevin Jorgeson, Tommy Caldwell, Robyn Ebersfeld and experts at the Access Fund, Black Diamond, Leave No Trace, and more
•
Mix of lore, how-to, humor, and entertainment — a reference book that’s easy to read and makes for good campfire talk
Dogs at the trailhead, belayers in lawn chairs, long lines queued up at the classics in Eldorado Canyon — the crags seem more crowded and more crazy than ever. In fact, according to the Outdoor Industry Association, in the United States more than 3.6 million people participated in climbing in 2011. Many of these new climbers are entering outdoor climbing solely through rock gyms, without having the opportunity to apprentice with an experienced friend or mentor — resulting in climbing accidents and conflicts. How do you become a responsible crag citizen? Crag Survival Handbook: The Unspoken Rules of Climbing is longtime climber Matt Samet’s personal handbook to becoming a member of the climbing community. While Samet discusses key skills like movement, dealing with fear, gear management, and how to fall, he also delves into crag culture: ethics, access, dealing with conflict, dogs and kids at the crags, and Leave No Trace practices. Samet lays out the unspoken rules you need to know. Chapters include: • • • •
Heads up! Safety, Hazards, and Basic Crag Awareness Etiquette, Access, and Impact: You’re Not the Only Fish in the Aquarium Movement PhD: Crouch Like a Tiger, Hide Like a Dragon Become a Rock Ninja: Tricks of the Cragger’s Trade
Crag Survival Handbook guides you through the essential questions, even the questions you didn’t know you had, just like a personal climbing mentor would — minute by minute, hour by hour, skill by skill. Matt Samet has more than 15 years of experience as a climbing writer, with eight of those as an editor at Climbing magazine (including the long-running “Sporting Life” column) and Rock & Ice. He is the author of The Climbing Dictionary (see page 27) and Death Grip: A Climber’s Escape from Benzo Madness. Samet resides with his family in Boulder, Colorado, and is active with the Flatirons Climbing Council. Find him online at www.climbingterms.com, or at “matt samet author” on Facebook. 256 pages, 7 x 81⁄2 , 110 B&W photos and illustrations, paperbound, $18.95, ISBN 978-1-59485-766-9. CLIMBING. Companion to Staying Alive in Avalanche Terrain (see page 49), the bestselling avalanche text in the U.S.
Winter athletes don’t necessarily want to be snow scientists, but playing in avalanche country does require basic knowledge of the risks in order to stay safe. This new guide by renowned avalanche expert Bruce Tremper is simple, accessible, and offers just the basics — an Everyman’s guide to avalanche safety that won’t overtax your average ski bums, but will keep them safe when they’re going for 12 consecutive months of powder. Stimson Bullitt, Foreword by Tom Hornbein, Introduction by Joel Connelly
I L LU S I O N DW E L L E R The Climbing Life of Stimson Bullitt
AVAIL AB L E IN N OV E MBE R
“A lovely mix of recollections coupled with erudite reflections of an at-times almost too-openly-honest elder.” — Tom Hornbein, author of Everest: The West Ridge
•
A moving recollection of a life inspired by climbing and redeemed by nature
•
Stim Bullitt came to climbing late in life, but with a passion that put him on rock well into his 80s
•
A memoir that teaches all of us something about aging with both power and grace
Stimson Bullitt was born into a privileged and influential Seattle family, a position he did not always find comfortable. He showed his black-sheep tendencies when, after graduating from Yale University, he rode the rails to come back West, where he worked in Central Washington orchards and on a highway crew at Chinook Pass. Later he became a skilled lawyer, a champion of civil and environmental causes, and president of KING Broadcasting, the communications empire built by his mother, Dorothy Stimson Bullitt. While he was always drawn to the mountains, it wasn’t until Bullitt reached his 50s and 60s that he sought challenges on North America’s formidable peaks, including Denali and Mount Rainier. Not until he was 70 did he take up rock climbing, but it became a match and foil for his passions and, at times, his inner demons. Illusion Dweller, named after a particularly hard-earned and difficult climb (5.10b) at Joshua Tree, is Bullitt’s climbing memoir, published posthumously and based on his own detailed manuscript. He climbed until just before his death at age 89. His achievements serve as inspiration to climbers of any age — and to anyone striving to retain or acquire a spirit of adventure later in life. 160 pages, 6 x 9, 8-page color insert, paperbound, $16.95, ISBN 978-1-59485-774-4. THE GREEN VINE A Guide to West Coast Sustainable, Organic, and Biodynamic Wineries
AVAIL AB L E IN SE PTE MBE R
You care about where your food comes from. How about your wine? •
A charismatic guide to understanding environmentally-friendly wines — from defining labels to reviewing vineyard practices
•
Features personally-tested profiles of sustainable wines that everyone needs to try
•
California, Washington, and Oregon rank #1–3 nationally as having the most wineries per state
Most people don’t want to think about their wine too much; they just want to enjoy it. At the same time, more and more people are thinking about where their food comes from. Why not ask the same questions about wine? It’s a product that faces many of the same industry, environment, and economic issues as that sustainable steak or fresh home-grown salad on your plate. Traditional wine production is currently under threat from increasingly homogenized commercial processes and suffers from a large carbon footprint — from bottle and cork materials to water runoff and erosion. Many winemakers are starting to take environmental stewardship very seriously, changing how they grow grapes and make wine. With The Green Vine, wine expert Shannon Borg demystifies the terms of sustainable wine-making and lays out a simple guide to West Coast wines and wineries that use both historical and modern sustainable practices. She explains why it’s important to consider how wine is produced and packaged, and why growing methods, soil health, and water resources matter. She then embarks on a wine-tasting tour of nearly 200 sustainable wineries in Washington, Oregon, Northern California, British Columbia, and Idaho — profiling the winemakers and farmers who are leading the Green Wine movement. Shannon Borg is a Seattle writer, editor, poet, and wine educator. She writes about wine for Seattle Magazine, has written about food and wine for a variety of West Coast media, and is the author of Chefs on the Farm: Inspired Lessons and Recipes from the Quillisascut Farm School of the Domestic Arts (see page 18). She holds certificates from the International Sommelier Guild and has been a wine judge for several competitions. Borg currently manages the restaurant and café at Doe Bay Resort on Orcas Island, Washington. LIVE!
RARE BIRD
FROM D E AT H VA L L E Y
Pursuing the Mystery of the Marbled Murrelet
AVA IL A B L E IN AUGU ST
AVAI LAB L E IN AUGUST
“Compelling. . . engaging.” — Library Journal
“Rare insights into the trials and joys of scientific discovery.” — Publisher’s Weekly Part naturalist detective story and part environmental inquiry, Rare Bird: Pursuing the Mystery of the Marbled Murrelet celebrates the fascinating world of an endangered seabird that depends on the contested old-growth forests of the Pacific Northwest for its survival. “This chunky little seabird stole my heart.” So confesses Maria Mudd Ruth, a veteran nature writer perfectly happy to be a generalist before getting swept up in the strange story of the marbled murrelet. This curiosity of nature, which flies like a little brown bullet at up to 100 miles an hour and lives most of its life offshore, is seen onland only during breeding season, when each female lays a single egg high on a mossy tree limb in the ancient coastal forest. Ruth traces reports of the bird back to Captain Cook’s ill-fated voyage of discovery on the Pacific Ocean in 1778, and explores the mindset of 19th- and 20th-century naturalists who — despite their best efforts — failed to piece together clues to the whereabouts of the bird’s nest. Ruth ventures to coastal meadows before dawn and onto the ocean at midnight to learn firsthand how scientists observe nature. She interviews all the major players in the drama: timber company executives and fishing fleet operators whose businesses are threatened by conservation measures, as well as the so-called cowboy scientists who are devoted to saving the marbled murrelet from extinction. And, ultimately, Ruth puts her curiosity and passion for this rare bird onto the page for readers to savor. Maria Mudd Ruth has written more than a dozen books on natural history topics. She resides with her family in Olympia, Washington, and can be found online at www.mariaruthbooks. blogspot.com. 320 pages, 51⁄2 x 81⁄2, 15 B&W illustrations, $18.95, ISBN 978-1-59485-835-2. NATURE. A compelling narrative about one of the most mysterious places on Earth by acclaimed nonfiction writer Soennichsen
Death Valley is a place of record-breaking heat and unexplained natural oddities—a place where salt beds descend a thousand feet below the surface; where inch-long fish swim in a 112-degree creek; where huge boulders slide mysteriously across a dry lakebed. There are also gas stations, convenience stores, a visitor center, and a five-star hotel. Despite the modern conveniences, however, it’s still quite easy to die in Death Valley. Author John Soennichsen spent decades hiking, exploring, and observing as much of this forbidding yet fascinating region as possible. Based on journals kept during his travels, Live! From Death Valley relates his experiences in the region and examines the history, geology, and philosophical inspirations of the surrounding area. Alongside his own stories Soennichsen weaves an imaginative retelling of William Manly and the Bennet-Arcane party’s fateful pioneer trip through Death Valley in 1849–50, as well as modern-day tales of UFO sightings, doomsday prophets, and movie and TV production sets. Part guidebook, part autobiography, part narrative, Live! From Death Valley chronicles the raw history, weirdness, and geographical charm of this extraordinary place. John Soennichsen likes to explore lonely places, little-known lives, and fascinating histories. He is a writer with more than 250 articles, essays, and short fiction to his credit and is the author of three books, including The Washington Channeled Scablands Guide (see page 35). Find him at johnsoennichsen. weebly.com/index.html. 192 pages, 51⁄2 x 71⁄2, 14 B&W photos, 1 map, paperbound, $14.95, ISBN 978-1-59485775-1. MEMOIR/ADVENTURE. Rights: W.

F I VA An Adventure That Went Wrong
AVAIL AB L E IN AUGUST
“A wonderful, nostalgic, gripping, classic yarn with great humour.” — Joe Simpson, author of Touching the Void
•
A classic tale of how youthful bravado leads to serious trouble
•
Winner, Mountain Literature Award, Banff Festival 2012
•
Finalist, Boardman-Tasker Prize for Mountain Literature, 2012
In 1969, teenage twin brothers Gordon and John Stainforth set out from their home in Hertfordshire, England, to climb the highest rock face in Europe — Norway’s Troll Wall. The route they targeted is called “Fiva” (pronounced “fever”). Poor judges of their own abilities, experience, and gear, they began the climb convinced they would return to their tent in time for afternoon tea. Within hours of starting the route, things went terribly wrong. Fiva is the story that Gordon Stainforth lived to tell, 40 years later. While it’s a tale that climbers will embrace, the adventure is one that all readers of non-fiction adventure will enjoy and find absorbing. It’s a story of innocence, brotherly love, youthful folly, and of danger, danger, and more danger. Gordon Stainforth is the author of Eyes to the Hills, winner of the Thomas Cook Illustrated Travel Book Award, and The Cuillin, which won the Banff Festival’s Best Book of Mountain Image and the Outdoor Writers’ Guild Award for Excellence. He has spent his career in the television and film industry, working on such films as Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining. He lives in Derbyshire, England. 224 pages, 51⁄2 x 81⁄2, 24 B&W photos, 2 maps, $16.95, paperbound, ISBN 978-1-59485-846-8. ADVENTURE. Rights: NA

THE BEST FRONT RANGE HIKES FOR CHILDREN
AVAIL ABL E IN N OV E MBE R
An easy-to-use guide to 50 of the best Front Range hikes for children •
Kid-friendly trail ratings and symbols
•
Detailed directions and full-color easily readable maps
•
Sidebars on historical and educational information, as well as activities children can enjoy on the way home from each hike
Colorado’s Front Range is a wonderful place to introduce children to the outdoors and hiking. From Fort Collins to Denver and Boulder and south to Colorado Springs, trails abound for kids who love spending time outside. This essential guide helps parents select age- and ability-appropriate trails at a glance with a handy rating system. Choose trails that are fun and just challenging enough for children between the ages of two and 16. From wheelchair accessible to more challenging trails, the 50 hikes that comprise this guidebook were selected for their variety, ease of access, unique natural beauty, educational opportunities, and proximity to some of the best known attractions along the Front Range, including the Platte River, Pikes Peak, Mount Evans, and Rocky Mountain National Park. Children may spot wild turkeys while exploring the Hornbek Homestead Trail, near Colorado Springs; enjoy trekking across the lands of an early settlement in the Bobcat Ridge Natural Area, near Fort Collins; or catch a glimpse of a bighorn sheep along the Waterton Canyon Trail, south of Denver. Tony Parker is a lifelong outdoor enthusiast, who spent his early years hiking in the foothills near Colorado’s Pikes Peak. Years of hiking with his wife, Nancy, and their three kids, along with his love of teaching 7th–12th grade students, helped entice him to share some of his favorite Front Range hikes for children. 208 pages, 6 x 9, 120 color photos, 51 maps, paperbound, $24.95, ISBN 978-1-937052-06-5. The annual American Alpine Journal (AAJ), now in its 84th year, documents the world’s most significant climbs and expeditions.

•
Accident reports from all over North America ensure you’ll find lessons from your local area.

•
Now with more illustrations and photographs throughout the book.
Every year, novice climbers and experts alike are injured or killed by inadequate preparation and errors in judgment. Since 1948, the American Alpine Club has been documenting the year’s most significant and teachable climbing accidents, providing invaluable lessons to climbers. Inside the pages of Accidents in North American Mountaineering, each accident is carefully analyzed so climbers can learn to avoid similar situations in the future. In Accidents’ second annual “Know the Ropes” section, professional mountain guides describe common problems while lowering a climber from an anchor, a situation that all to frequently leads to injuries and fatalities. “Know the Ropes” offers in-depth instruction and copious illustration to help prevent such avoidable lowering accidents. 132 pages, 6 x 9, 2 color photos, 15 B&W photos, 2 illustrations, paperback, $12.95, ISBN 978-1-933056-81-4, SPORTS/MOUNTAINEERING. Our feature articles include the most compelling stories, told by the climbers themselves. In Climbs & Expeditions, great ascents are documented from Antarctica to Afghanistan and from Patagonia to Pakistan. This year, the AAJ will be published in full color for the first time in its 84-year history, with some significant design enhancements. There is also twice as much coverage of climbs in the United States — more stories about climbs close to home! Included with this coverage will be a major story about the history, recent climbing, and new-route potential of Southern California’s popular Mt. Whitney area. 400 pages, 6 x 9, 350 color photos, 10 illustrations, 10 maps, paperback, $35, ISBN 978-1-933056-79-1, SPORTS/MOUNTAINEERING. Rights: W.

AVAIL AB L E IN AUGUST
Be transported to one of the world’s most exotic mountaineering locations •
Antarctica is home to one of the greatest collections of unclimbed mountains on Earth
•
Intriguing mix of stories, history, route information, and breathtaking photos
•
Includes climbing information never before compiled on Antarctica
Mountaineering in Antarctica is a comprehensive overview of climbing history and expeditions by a recognized expert on the territory. Damien Gildea’s research encompasses journeys from the Heroic Age of Antarctic exploration, through the expansion of international scientific activity in the latter half of the 20th century, to the modern adventure tourism of the new millennium. This book is a tribute to the mountains themselves and to the experiences of those who have traveled among them — their triumphs, travails, and tragedies. For the first time, the peaks and ranges of the planet’s wildest continent are revealed in one place for all to see. Damien Gildea has led seven successful expeditions to the high mountains of Antarctica since 2001. In 1998, he published the Antarctic Mountaineering Chronology (New Zealand Mountain Safety Council). Known for his highprecision GPS data, Damien has also published two topographical maps for Livingston Island (2004) and Vinson Massif & the Sentinel Range (2007), the latter of which includes a number of new features named by the USGS. Damien has also guided an expedition to the South Pole by ski and made various journeys to the Himalaya, Karakoram, and Andes. When not on expeditions, he lives in Australia. 192 pages, 9 x 101⁄2, 180 color photos, 30 maps, hardbound, $49.95, ISBN 978-1-59485-844-4. MOUNTAINEERING/PHOTOGRAPHY. Rights: NA.

Braided River creates books as the primary tools for specific conservation campaigns, partnering with grassroots organizations such as the Alaska Wilderness League, the National Resources Defense Council, and the World Wildlife Fund, among others. Through these partnerships, for example, outreach for To The Arctic resulted in one million signatures asking President Obama to protect America’s Arctic. And since it launched in 2007, more than 460,000 visitors to the traveling “Yellowstone to Yukon” photography exhibit——a spinoff of the book——have learned about the importance of creating wildlife corridors for migrating mammals. There are many more such success stories, as well, reflecting the educational and emotive power of books as tools for the greater good. C h eck O ut F r es h Pa nt r y e S h o r ts Book To Follow in Spring 2014!
“a fun new monthly e-book series … which presents a well-rounded handful of recipes for a single seasonal ingredient in every issue.” — Edible Seattle
The new Fresh Pantry series of eshorts from Amy Pennington includes 12 chapterlength ebooks for just $2.99 each. These digital eshorts will culminate in a new book — also titled Fresh Pantry — which will be published in Spring 2014. Fresh Pantry picks up where Pennington’s award-winning book, Urban Pantry, left off. Urban Pantry introduced clever cooking concepts and ingredients, provided organization inspiration, and helped home cooks of all skill levels create sustainable and thrifty kitchens. The new series introduces readers to the freshest seasonal ingredients — one basic vegetable or fruit, one month at a time — that can efficiently supplement the canned and dried foods in your pantry. Buy some or all of the eshorts that appeal to you, and pick up the book in an attractive abbreviated print version of the series when it is available in the Spring! Here’s what is included: • January: Winter Squash
• July: Summer Squash
• February: Onions
• August: Tomato
• March: Carrots
• September: Pepper
• April: Rhubarb
• October: Kale
• May: Lettuce
• November: Beet
• June: Peas
• December: Cabbage
To sample a recipe from a Fresh Pantry eshort, visit Foodista.com: www.foodista.com/blog/2013/03/23/fresh-pantry-cardamom-carrot-latkes. Available where ebooks are sold.
