The importance of marketing and networking a property for sale is often overlooked, and is sometimes just ignored. Rarely does a home just sell itself unless it is price driven, which means that you are typically giving away equity. When considering the sale of your home, which is commonly your largest asset, take time to compare agents and compare the bottom line. What do the commission dollars that you are paying really get you in the end? With over 16 years of being the number one agent and with over 830 transactional sides in Talega alone, I have developed a premier marketing program that sells your home for top dollar. SPRING FORWARD… Fall back… What do you know about the history of daylight saving time? Here are a few facts about the semi-annual time shift which goes into effect on Sunday, March 13th across most of the country, and in 69 other countries around the world. Benjamin Franklin is often credited with the invention of daylight saving time and according to History.com, although he was in favor of maximizing daylight hours- and wrote a satirical essay in 1874 while he was an American envoy in Paris stating Parisians could save millions of dollars through “the economy of using sunshine instead of candles-“ his dream didn’t come true until after his death. An Englishman enacted the first campaign to move the clocks forward between April and October so that more people could enjoy the plentiful sunlight. In 1918, the United States embraced the idea but not intended as a benefit to farmers working in the field, as many people think. The country was put on DST for the remainder of WWI to conserve resources. The law, however, proved so unpopular that it was later repealed. When America went to war again, President Roosevelt reinstated DST in 1942 but after the war, there wasn’t a federal law regarding it so states were free to choose whether or not to observe (a system that Time Magazine called “a chaos of clocks.”) Order finally came in 1966 with the enactment of the Uniform Time Act, which standardized DST, although states had the option of remaining on standard time year-round. In 2007, the Energy Policy Act of 2005 enacted new start and stop dates that continue today. Arizona and Hawaii are the only two states that stick with standard time year-round. However you may feel about the time shift, and despite being sharply criticized by conservationists, economist and many others, it’s a sure sign that spring is on the horizon. Enjoy the sunny spring and summer evenings to come,

Making Sense of 21st Century Learning BY DR. DUSTINE REY
T
hroughout history, education has been shaped by societal needs. Education is a process which conveys, from one generation to the next, the skills, values and knowledge that are needed for a successful life. Parents, families and schools play a key role in supporting the development of 21st century skills. These skills are not a fad or trend that will diminish like other educational models. Twenty-first century skills are a set of academic building blocks—abilities and ways of thinking—that can help kids thrive in our current world. These skills, often called the 4Cs, include:
The 21st century classroom includes: • Working in teams, solving real-world local and global problems • Asking tough questions and working through problems (as opposed to teachers providing immediate answers) • Students applying their knowledge and proving what they know by presenting to classmates and community • A deep connection to families and the greater community For more tips and information please visit: www.p21.org/ our-work/citizenship/a-parents-guide Dr. Rey is an adjunct professor at The Graduate School of Education and Psychology at Pepperdine University and the founder/executive director of The Gratitude Garden Preschool in San Clemente. The Truth about Wisdom Teeth and Orthodontics BY DR. TAYLOR OLSEN, DDS, MSD
YOUR DENTIST JUST took an X-ray and said those dreaded
words– “Your wisdom teeth are coming in!” If you’re like most people, one of your first thoughts might be “I need to get those out, they’re going to ruin my orthodontics!” There are a lot of differing opinions regarding whether or not wisdom teeth cause crowding. But we’ve all heard it, so where did this notion originate? At one time, the generally accepted philosophy was that after braces, retainers should be worn only for a few years, and then the teeth would stay straight on their own. While we now know this isn’t true, this philosophy was advocated for many years. Many people had orthodontics during middle school, wore a retainer until age 16, and then- freedom! No more retainer and your teeth were supposed to stay straight! Much to everyone’s dismay, the teeth started to shift. The advent of shifting teeth often coincided with another landmark event– the appearance of wisdom teeth. Since the wisdom teeth were coming onto the scene right when the teeth started to shift,
they often took the heat. It was believed that everyone needed to have their wisdom teeth removed to preserve their orthodontic work. Further research has revealed that wisdom teeth are not necessarily the cause of crowding. Teeth have “memory” and when you stop wearing your retainer, the teeth start to shift. In fact, even people who are born without wisdom teeth experience crowding if they stop wearing retainers. Does that mean if you wear your retainer you won’t need to have your wisdom teeth removed? Not necessarily, as every situation is unique. Your best bet is to have a board certified orthodontist consult with your general dentist to determine what is right for you. But rest assured, if you’re wearing your retainer you can be confident that your orthodontics are safe, regardless of what happens with your wisdom teeth! Contact Dr. Taylor Olsen, a board certified orthodontist with offices in San Clemente and San Juan Capistrano, at info@ ocbraces.com or visit www.ocbraces.com for more information.
1. Critical thinking and problem solving 2. Communication 3. Collaboration 4. Creativity and innovation
Sir Kenneth Robinson, a leading thinker and speaker on creativity, has said, “We do not grow into creativity, we grow out of it-or rather, we are educated out of it. For ages, traditional education, with its emphasis on rote learning and memorization of static facts, has valued conformity over novelty of thought. But in today’s world of global competition, innovative capacity and a creative spirit are fast becoming requirements for personal and professional success.” Current research supports the effectiveness of cooperative and project-based learning, real world teaching contexts, and nurturing creativity and critical thinking. Providing your child with a 21st century education will give them opportunities to develop the skills, knowledge and the mindset they need to be competitive and successful in life. Parents can help support this through: • Exploring the world through maps • Immersing your family in world culture

That’s part of our goal to help people figure out what they’re here for. The way Rick teaches, it just

hen Phil and Alicia Shinners moved to San Clemente from Irvine two years ago, his new job as lead pastor at the San Clemente campus of Saddleback Church was their priority as they canvassed the town for the ideal spot to put down new roots and continue raising their three children, Avery, now 12, Brylie, 8, and Remy, 5. Their search began and ended in Talega, where they found award winning schools and the kind of family-friendly community they were hoping to find. It did not disappoint. “This is such a family town,” says Phil, 40, who appreciates the active and outdoorsy lifestyle that is prevalent here. “People are casual, down to earth and easy to connect with.” Whether riding bikes, spending time with neighbors or going to the beach as a family, the Shinners are making the most of their new home, and the church is a further extension of that welcoming community they’ve already found in Talega. Born and raised in Orange County, Phil and Alicia met in 8th grade while attending the same church in Costa Mesa with their families. Both served as youth ministers there, and their passions to serve in that capacity grew from time spent engaging with and educating youths in their community. Equally
displaying laid back, easygoing warmth, it’s obvious how effortlessly the couple connected themselves and with others, especially teenagers. They were married in 1998, around the same time that Phil was hired to run the student ministries at that same church, Newport Mesa Christian Center. “It was a really meaningful opportunity,” to work in the church where they had met. “Here we are, together, kind of running the program later in life.” Alicia volunteered a lot of time there also, not the least of which was spent running the summer camp each year. “I loved everything about it really, and it was a major catalyst for what we’re doing now.” Considering their work at the church a “big privilege,” the couple has held various positions at churches all over Orange County, embracing the local youth community with open arms and a desire to help make their teenage years a positive experience. Sharing their passions and beliefs with those who are searching has led to Phil’s newest job as Lead Pastor at Saddleback Church in San Clemente. Phil says,“We work hard to be a church for people who either don’t have a church background or have left the church altogether. It’s the church for people who don’t

makes sense to people who maybe don’t have a lot of religious background.” This month, the San Clemente campus—located on Calle Batido in the Talega Business Park—is celebrating their 10th anniversary, an important milestone for the church and a direct indication of its relevance in the community. The Shinners are excited to be an integral part of it, hopefully continuing to “bring hope, encourage people and see lives changed,” says Phil. Their work in the church translates directly to family,

and the Shinners have been foster care hosts for years, taking children in need into their home and welcoming them as one of their own. Phil and Alicia have felt led to share their family— the most valuable thing they have— with those that don’t have one. Most recently, they cared for a young girl, Destiny, from the day Alicia picked her up at only two days old, until shortly after her 1st birthday when she was placed back with her grandmother. The idea of opening up their home to others in need is something that Avery, Brylie and Remy have been exposed to all of their young lives. “It’s something we get to do together, as a family, and it has impacted their lives quite a bit already,” says Alicia. The Shinners were thrilled to have another chance to visit with Destiny, now four, just after Christmas when she came to stay with them for a week. “We all just love her to bits,” says Alicia. Especially Brylie, who, perhaps more so than the other siblings, shares a special bond with the little girl. The Shinners are hoping they can remain a part of Destiny’s life and watch her grow into adulthood, as the host program is designed to encourage families to stay in a relationship with the kids throughout their lives. At home, Avery, a 7th grader at Vista del Mar Middle School, plays AYSO soccer, is the neighborhood babysitter,
loves going to the beach (taking part in Jr. Guards in the summer) and singing and playing music with her dad. Brylie, the classic middle child with a big personality, loves animals and takes care of many of their neighbors’ pets while they’re away. Curly-haired, Alicia says of Brylie, “I’ve always said there’s nowhere else for her personality to go but straight off the top of her head.” Remy, a kindergartener, is adventurous and “all boy.” He loves riding his dirt bike and scooter and puts great effort into keeping up with his older siblings. “I’m just happy we make it through each day with him!” jokes Alicia. When she’s not spending her time at home or in the church, Alicia cherishes her job as a postpartum doula for After the Stork, providing care and support for mothers transitioning into life at home with a newborn. She also loves to craft, with a lovely home full of her projects and transformed flea market finds. With the realities of family life— the laundry never fully caught up and dishes always in the sink— Alicia says, “There’s something about being able to complete a project from start to finish that makes me very happy!” Recently, to celebrate Phil’s 40th birthday a couple months ago, he and Alicia got together with a group of old friends over a weekend in January and took two days to walk along the beach

from the Newport Pier to San Clemente. On this 30-mile adventure, they stopped at restaurants and hotels at night, walked, took pictures and reflected on the milestone. As a family, the one thing they all love to do is go dirt bike riding in Ocotillo Wells at least once a year, sleeping in tents, cooking out and enjoying time together with no schedules and minimal interruptions. This is something Phil and Alicia both grew up doing with their families and they are excited to be able to build some of the same memories with their children. Phil appreciates the small breakthrough they’ve just recently reached: the point where all three kids are now old enough to gear up and ride on their own bikes. They also enjoy trips to the beach and going to the skate park at the end of Avenida La Pata as a family. “It’s free and it keeps everyone entertained,” says Phil. Living in the Verano neighborhood, they have built friendships with their neighbors and are so appreciative that their kids have so many others to play with. After school, most of them come outside to ride bikes and scooters around together. “It has a lovely Mad Max feel to it!” says Phil. San Clemente may be home to almost 65,000 people but it is still very much a small town and Phil and Alicia love living in the community where they work, often bumping into friends at their children’s games or on a trip to Target. And although close to 1,000 people attend services at Saddleback every week, the majority are from San Clemente, fostering a closer knit community feeling where neighbors recognize other neighbors at services. The church has always acted as a compass for Phil and Alicia, guiding their lives. For the Shinners, life is about loving and helping others, and through their example they hope to help people realize that the joy of connecting is what makes life meaningful. Phil says, “From my perspective, there is more going on here than what we can just see and touch. I love that we get to walk through life with people, bring them hope and point them to God.” Submit Content at:

Tips for Improving Your Credit Score
LOWER YOUR UTILIZATION RATIO
BY TOM JESSOP
I
f you are planning to apply for a mortgage any time in the near future, it is time to start cleaning up your credit score. A credit score is not the only factor lenders take into consideration when deciding whether you qualify for a home loan. Nevertheless, it doesn't only determine whether a lender wants to work with you, but can also affect the amount of interest you'll pay on a loan. If you take the proper measures, fixing a bad credit score is definitely possible. First and foremost, it is key you understand exactly what determines that score.
WHAT IS A CREDIT SCORE?
A credit score is a number that reflects how trustworthy you are to pay off your debt. While scores can be calculated a few different ways depending on the service used, here are a few common elements factored into your credit score: • Payment history - do you pay your bills on time? • Number of open credit lines • Debt you owe •U tilization ratio - how close do you come to reaching your credit limit every month? Your score is determined based on the information provided in your credit report. It is reflected as a three-digit number, the higher the better. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau said FICO scores are most commonly used by lenders. In addition, there are three credit reporting agencies: Equifax, Experian and TransUnion. The majority of lenders will take your score from each agency and use the middle one as the determinant of your interest rate. It doesn't take as long as you might think to fix a bad credit score. What it does take is increased financial responsibility, but there are also a few practices you may not even realize
that could affect your score. Here are a few ways to start cleaning it up: ORDER A COPY OF YOUR CREDIT REPORT
The first thing you need to do to boost your score is understanding it. Order a copy of your credit report and dissect it thoroughly. According to Forbes contributor Curtis Arnold, each of the three credit reporting bureaus are required to provide you with one free copy of your report every year. Once you have a copy, read it carefully to make sure all of the information is accurate. If you note any errors, dispute them. Every credit bureau has an online form where you can submit a dispute. You can also directly contact the lender or creditor responsible for reporting an inaccuracy. When an error is fixed on your credit report, your score can improve right away.
A utilization ratio, expressed as a percentage, reflects the amount of money you spend per month as compared to your credit limit. According to Time Magazine, it is the second most important factor in deciding your credit score. Lenders don't want to see you almost max out your card every month, even if you pay your bills on time. They want to see you spend responsibly. A good utilization ratio is 30% or lower, though people with the highest credit scores keep their ratio at about 7%. It is suggested that one way to keep your utilization ratio low is to pay your bill more than once a month. The more you return your balance back to zero, the further you will remain from reaching your credit limit. DON'T GET TOO MANY CREDIT CARDS
Opening too many lines of credit, especially in a short amount of time, can hurt your credit score. Doing so can be a red flag and makes you appear less financially responsible. Obtaining a new retail credit card is also more detrimental to your score than obtaining a traditional card, so make sure to carefully consider the risk before letting the
salesperson behind the counter convince you the loyalty points are worth it. START ESTABLISHING A CREDIT HISTORY
Your credit score reflects the frequency with which you pay off your debt on time. If you have not had a credit card for very long, you will not be able to demonstrate a history of responsible spending and on-time payments. It is important to establish a pattern so lenders know you are trustworthy. Even if you are not planning to buy a home in the near future, it may be a good idea to start building credit now. You'll be grateful someday down the road when you receive lower interest on your mortgage payments. DON'T CANCEL CREDIT CARDS
According to Arnold, canceling a credit card can actually hurt your credit score because it reduces the amount of available credit you have. According to FICO, a canceled credit card doesn't even disappear from your credit report. It could still be factored into your score, so better to keep it active and spend responsibly. DON'T MAKE LATE PAYMENTS
Whether or not you pay your bills on time is the most significant factor in determining your credit score. Arnold explained that FICO considers payment history as 35% of your score. One obvious way to make sure you pay your bills on time is to not spend more than you can afford to pay back. Beyond that comes the task of simply

YOUR HOME
YOUR HEALTH
Would You Hire a Podiatrist to Perform Heart Surgery? BY DAVID ALLEN
A
person has so many options when it comes to remodeling their kitchen or bath. How can one go about narrowing the field of options in order to efficiently find the best candidates for the job? Think of your home as a human body with all sorts of parts making up the whole. Contractors are the doctors of the home. Some are general practitioners, others are specialists and still others are simply incompetent. The general practitioner is good for overall home evaluation and also for orchestrating a host of specialists when the home is being totally redone. His knowledge enables him to look at the big picture and lay out a strategy for success. Specialists are those contractors who have focused their time and energy to become an expert in a specific area of home improvement. Examples include roofers, plumbers and electricians. Homeowners often make the mistake of assuming that since the contractor did a nice job in one area (such as painting,) then he would be equally good at setting tile or laying flooring. That's not a good assumption. If your dentist did a fine job putting in that crown, then would you ask him to remove your gall

bladder? Would you go to a good foot doctor podiatrist for triple heart bypass surgery? Of course not. Then why would you go to a carpet store to have them operate on the heart of your home— the kitchen? The best strategy for finding the right contractor to complete your project is limiting your search to those contractors specializing in that type of work. Then, do a thorough job of checking them out. Get lots of references. The most critical attribute of the contractor you want is trustworthiness. Nothing trumps trust. Upgrade Your
Morning Coffee
C
BY YVONNE KOHSEL
offee can either help you or hurt you depending upon how it’s consumed. Prepared in the right way, coffee super-charges your brain to take on a new day and is one of the most antioxidant rich foods on earth. To upgrade your morning cup of joe, start by grinding organic beans that are free of mold and pesticides. Coffee beans are often grown in countries that do not regulate the use of these chemicals. Moreover, most coffee sold in stores is stale, which greatly decreases the beneficial antioxidants. Coffee beans may also be covered in toxic mold, called mycotoxins, linked to serious issues like kidney disease, brain damage and hypertension. Freshly ground, organic and mold-free beans are a must for a healthy cup. To really upgrade your coffee, add in good fat to protect the antioxidants and help control your blood sugar. Stir in a few spoonfuls of any of the following fats to make your coffee a super health food: grass-fed, organic heavy cream; grass-fed, organic butter; butter oil; coconut oil or full-fat coconut milk; or MCT oil. If you must use a sweetener, use a pinch of high quality stevia. Remember, you can have too much of a good thing and moderation with coffee is key. real estate commercials? That’s what they taught. They were paid commission on product sales, both earning hundreds of thousands of dollars per year. Her family never understood how she got paid so much for talking, but Connie was good at it! Long before her many adventures, Connie helped her father keep the books for his little diner. She began to notice that hot dogs made more money than hamburgers. If her dad expanded his offerings of hot dogs, he could grow his menu and his profits. As her income expanded, Connie
needed a plan! Her tax lady showed her how incorporating herself would offer many tax advantages and enable her to keep more of her hard-earned money. By creating a ‘C’ corporation she was able to salary herself and contribute to her own retirement plan by putting her pre-tax dollars to work. Sal, on the other hand, said, “I can’t afford it. I can’t afford to set anything aside.” Instead, he expanded his lifestyle to fit his income. He didn’t leverage the advice from his friend and coworker, nor did he see the value of seeking professional services. Sal will never be able to retire but Connie retired 16 years ago because she cradled some of her income in tax strategies. Visualize her retirement money placed in a hot dog bun: it stayed secure within the structure she put it in. She also expanded her offerings to serve her for years to come. Sal took his income and stacked it between his wants with no structure, like the open sides of the hamburger bun, where it slipped out and was lost. The right tax strategies can create a full course financial life. Hot Dog!

y kids love Marshmallow Peeps. Those sugar-laden, animal-shaped conglomerations of goo. Me, I’m not a fan. Never have been. The thought of them makes my teeth hurt and my stomach turn. But, every year around this time, I buy them. Because, as I said, my kids love them. Or maybe they just love the idea of them, because they never actually finish them. They get super-excited when they see them in their Easter baskets, take a few bites and that’s it. Without fail, a few months after Easter I find those pastel little creations hardened and stuffed in the back of the pantry. So, in honor of all the uneaten Peeps in the world (I know I’m not the only one), I went on a hunt (not the Easter egg kind) for things to do with Peeps.

S’mores - Why have I never thought of this? Take some graham crackers, some chocolate and stuff those little critters in there for a colorful take on an old classic. Peep Cake - Think funfetti. Cut them up (but don’t let your kids see you annihilating their Peeps), toss them into cake batter and the end result is a fun and colorful cake. Wreath - Hot glue those chicks (or bunnies) to a wreath form, add a cute ribbon and you have an adorable door decoration.
Lecture: Bees of Orange County
@RMV Presentation Center So you think you know about bees - they give us honey, right? Come along and join Michelle Rivers, who worked for Bumblebee Conservation Trust in the UK, to discover the bees of Orange County. Learn about the fascinating world of bees, what bees you might see in Orange County and how to help these important pollinators. You are guaranteed to learn bee facts that will impress your friends and family. General Admission: Free 7:00 – 8:30 pm
Board Game Pieces - This isn’t permanent, of course. But, how fun would Chutes and Ladders or chess be with Peeps? Peep Pranks - In the spirit of Elf on the Shelf, your Peeps can pull some pranks your kids are sure to get a kick out of. Microwave Them - Let your kids stick them on a plate and watch what happens in the microwave. It might get a little messy. But, it’s worth it in the name of science, right? Peep War - I found this game online. It’s like Risk and checkers mixed together and played with Peeps. Get the directions at invisiblecity.com.
